Who's favored tonight? Ah, the team that went to the playoffs last. year, the Carolina Panthers led by that. man, Kenny Pickett, who will be taking. on Carson Beck. Now, there was a tweet. floating around and we have not been. able to check the legitimacy of it, but. it does sound like a fun little fact. So, #statthat from the person that. tweeted it, there's a chance Carson Beck.

threw the last pass of a college. football season and the first pass of an. NFL football season. He might be the. only person in history to do as such. Well, we are hoping that he and Kenny. Pickett and Haynes King from Georgia. Tech who will be the backup quarterback. for the Carolina Panthers tonight. >> Uh-huh. >> Oh, yeah. >> And then the sweet baby Slovis who will. be the backup quarterback for the. Arizona Cardinals. that's what a lot of these guys are. going to be able to do. Had great. careers. A lot of these guys are going. to be told for the first time in their. life, "You ain't worth a damn here. Go on and. get out." Heartbreaking stuff, reality. of the business, kid. There's only so. many spots on the roster, so we. understand that tonight might be some. bad football, might be some chaotic. football, but also we know this is very. early. A lot of these second, third. string wide receivers that are going to. be playing tonight, they don't know what. routes they're running. >> No. >> [clears throat]. >> No, no, no. >> They have no idea where they're going. So, the quarterback is usually going to. find one person that they trust a lot.

Okay, this person I know where they're. going to be. Now, can the offensive line. protect me enough to know where this. person's going to be to get the ball. there? Probably, normally, not. A lot. easier to get ball than protect somebody. from not getting the ball. We know that Kenny Pickett. has the ability to run because they. actually had to change a rule because. Kenny Pickett pump faked a fake slide. and continued to run. Haynes King from. It could go pretty low in the. preseason, but what I look at normally. is the quarterbacks, the backup. quarterbacks, who's going to be playing. most of the game. Kenny Pickett, veteran. versus a rookie, Carson Beck. Dave. Canales is 0-6 ATS though, so something. to think about. >> Yeah, they said that, but but maybe he. knows that, and maybe they get their get. back this year. And the Panthers. >> It's a good football team. >> It is a good football team. Will they. continue into a Hall of Fame game where. a lot of the people that are going to be. on that good football team, maybe great. football team during the regular season,

aren't going to be playing tonight. I. would like to send my positive T's and. P's to the punters that are going to be. out here tonight. Now, obviously, you. would assume that I would like to just. lump the kickers in there as well. Punter, I would say is the most. dangerous position in preseason, especially in this Hall of Fame game, cuz you got a lot of people that are. going to be selling stuff in a week or. so uh that are going to be cut from an. NFL team doing something that they've. never done in their life trying to. protect you. And all you're doing is. sitting back there like literally a. sitting duck. And now you got All you. need is one or two people on the other.

team that know what they're doing and. trying to make a team. And know if they. block a kick, they're going to. definitely make the roster. So, for. punters, I would like to wish you all. Godspeed. Canada. So, you need to learn that right. now, and if you can't, you're going to. be gone. You got about three days to. learn something completely abnormal to. you. And oh yeah, we need you to strike, shed, and you need to run 60 yards. So, do you want to make the team or not? This is your dream. Well, this isn't. what I played. My whole life I played I. played running back my whole life. This. isn't Yeah, sweet. And let me tell you. about kickoffs. You You need to go out. here, you need to run full speed, just. close left shoulder outside shoulder, just run as hard as you can. Throw your. face right into that. I I think I got good don't need it. Just. need you to Do you want to make the team.

or not? That is what's happening for a. lot of rookies. We'll see tonight how. they uh take to it all. Not a rookie. A. very rich man. Just got paid again. >> Oh, yeah. >> Yes. >> Yeah. quarterback as the best player, you. know, kind of causing quite a shitstorm. to start the entire Steichen era, but he. ended up getting paid by boss man Jim. Irsay and Chris Ballard. Now he breaks. the bank again because Bijan Robinson's. deal just got done. Jahmyr Gibbs is. sitting up in Detroit watching all these. things happen. We assume he will break. the running back number next in the next. couple hours whenever they get that deal. done. But for Jonathan Taylor, as an. Indianapolis Colts fan, this guy has. done everything that you would have. hoped he would have done coming out of.

college. He's unbelievable. He's. explosive. He scores touchdowns. We've. never won with him on our team. >> No. >> Okay, we've actually had the fourth. overall pick a couple different times, but he's gone through a lot of different. turnover and he's always been a stud. whenever he's on the field. So we're. grateful he's here. We got a lot of. money tied up now in Alec Pierce, Daniel. Jones, and Jonathan Taylor on the. offensive side of the ball. Obviously, we got a couple picks and Sauce. We. bring in Mooney as well. DeForest. Buckner still down there waiting on his. money. Quenton Nelson, former top-10. pick as a guard out of Notre Dame, his.

contract's due at some point. >> Chris Ballard said, "I'm not. renegotiating my deal cuz we got to win. We'll see. If I win, I'll redo a deal. We don't win, I don't deserve to be. here." A lot of Colts fans are saying, "Yeah.". >> We know. >> Yeah. >> "Yeah, we understand that." Chris. Ballard has taken the ownership on that. I do respect and appreciate that. But we. got a lot of big names that don't have. money, and then a lot of our pillars. here have gotten paid a lot of money. So. I appreciate the team and the Irsays. paying this money to these people, but. we're going to have to do some salary. cap gymnastics if we want to keep this. team together past this year. Is this an. all or nothing year for the Indianapolis.

Colts? It really feels like that, and. that's an absurd thing for a team that. hasn't won the AFC South in 11 years, but I do appreciate the fact that we saw. the first 10 weeks last year, and. everybody's like, "Yep, let's do that. again." And if we're able to do that, hopefully we're able to figure it out. What we do know, Jonathan Taylor is. going to be a Colt probably for the rest. of his career, definitely for the. foreseeable future, and he certainly. earned the paycheck that he just got. >> Yeah, very much so, well earned, but it. does kind of seem like Groundhog's Day. Like, we've been having this same. conversation about the Colts for the. last several years, but it does feel a.

little bit different this year. Like, they've paid all these guys. We saw the. way they started last year, so we know. that that is a possibility. They can. play well, they can put themselves in a. position to be, you know, one of the. best teams in the AFC, at the very least. be a playoff team. And I mean, like, the. excuses are done. How many How many. years in a row have we said like, you. know, or Ballard has gotten up there and. said like, "Hey, listen, I like our. guys, but we need to win." Like, at a. certain point, you kind of understand, hey, everyone's been paid, you have the. guys who you think you need to go win,

and now they do need to go win, and if. they don't, I think there will be a lot. of big changes in Indianapolis. >> I think there will be, too. And. obviously, we got new ownership, same. family, the three daughters of Jim Irsay. now running things, Carly, Kalen, and. Casey, and I think they have done a. great job of adjusting to ownership role. while being aggressive and doing things. that maybe wouldn't have been happening. in Colts past, but also understanding. that if you do make a massive change, wholesale changes, a lot of decisions. have I mean, that is a lot of things. that have to happen. I'm not saying they.

punted on that for a year, but I do. think they were like, "Hey, we were. really good for 10 games. Our dad was. one of the most patient owners, did not. like the thought of turnover, turnover, turnover. They think that's what bad. teams do." I think they felt as. as a group and as a trio of sisters, that's like we need we deserve. to let them do a run back. But also I. think it's very clear like, "Hey, this. run back better be. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. >> This better be good. And I respect that. out of Carly who by all accounts is a. dog. I I I think that doesn't get talked.

about enough because she has dress, she. dresses incredible, she dresses. impeccable. Obviously daughter of Jim. Irsay, the way she speaks and talks is. different than probably how other people. speak. And obviously Caitlin and Casey. are part of that. But Carly is a dog. I. believe that thoroughly. That's why I. thought there was potentially going to. be wholesale changes before last year. But it feels like from the inside of. that building everybody understands we. got to win. And if we don't we're gone. Which I respect that, I appreciate that. But it's been a long time since we've. been winning around here. Jonathan.

Taylor helps, Daniel Jones helps. Will. Alec Pierce be healthy? We'll see. But. if we miss the injury bug, there's a. chance this Colts team's best team in. ball. And nobody wants that. Especially. you up in New England, especially with. the Super Bowl run you guys had last. year. And then all of a sudden guess. who's back? The new Peyton Manning. Hi. Hi up there. Indy since there's been anywhere near a. celebration. >> Well, and that's why when you look. around the division, it's like every. other team has made wholesale changes. over the last five-ish years and it. seemingly has worked out for everybody. The Texans have come all the way back. from the dead. The Jags have come all. the way back from the dead. The Titans. spent the most money in free agency and. now they're going into a second year.

with the quarterback with Brian Daboll, who Daboll basically has been called the. hey, this guy's going to help your young. QB and kind of resurrect Daboll's career. and also Cam Ward. So, they also spent. the fourth overall pick on a wide. receiver one for their young. quarterback. So, that's why it's kind of. hard looking at the Colts as they do. everything the exact same as they've. been doing with the same exact players. >> the same. We got rid of Pittman. >> That's true. thing's over. Can you tell me about the. state of the Bucs right now with their. vets? Baker and Buccaneers, are we. Kumbaya? Vita Vea, he's gone and coming. to the Indianapolis Colts. Where do we. sit with the two biggest names basically. on the Buccaneers right now? >> Well, we had a chance to talk to Jason. Light today, and he said, "I am not. trading Vita Vea." So, while they're. getting a lot of phone calls about him. and other players, uh there's no no. design to trade him. He actually said. that there was a little bit of progress.

in that there is some dialogue at least. between him and Vita Vea's agent. So, we're going to see where that goes. You. know, he tweaked his back. or contractitis as Adam Schefter calls. it and you know, he's not practiced. So, they're monitoring that. They said they. don't want a small thing to become a big. thing. You know, the big thing is he. wants out of here if he can't get his. his bag. So, we'll see how they do this. I don't know why they just don't chip. him up for this year a little bit and. you know, get him in the top 10 salary. wise. What's it going to cost him five, six,

seven million dollars and and and call. it a year and then they can do what they. want to next year. You know, and and he's a big part of. this offense not just size wise but but. what he means to this franchise. But, a. little bit of optimism in Jason Licht's. voice. I don't know if it's real or. imagined but we'll see where it heads. >> Okay, so that's for Vita Vea and. obviously he's a pillar a staple and a. guy that so many teams would want and. also still has years left. >> Yeah. >> uh of great football and if he's put on. the right defensive line. Now, let's go to the quarterback with Baker. Mayfield. He also mentioned about how. much he loves Baker it sounds like in. the press conference. Baker seemingly. maybe is able to keep personal and. professional feelings separate but what. he certainly said is he was not happy. with the way the business was handled. I. don't know how he feels about Jason. Licht specifically but Schefter came on. and said, I don't know if the. negotiation window is over. So, that.

told me that the Buccaneers still want. Baker. They're not as pissed off at him. as they could be for how he handled. this. How do you see this all shaking. out and what are your thoughts on the. way the Tampa Bay Buccaneers offense is. going to go with the trigger man. potentially pissed off at the. organization? >> Well, I I know that they were unhappy at. some of the things that he came out and. said. You know, they they may have felt. disrespected in their own way, but. listen, to Baker Mayfield and to any. player in the NFL that's putting pieces. of their body all over all over the.

league, it's personal, right? Everything's personal to this guy. anyway. He has the world's biggest. shoulder chip. Um, and to the Bucks it's. business. And from what I understand, that they were a little bit fearful or. are a little fearful of getting into a. Russell Wilson type situation where, you. know, uh, you gave him a huge contract, maybe he doesn't pan out. And then. you're you're you know, strapped with. bad salary cap situation. Um, he wanted. more than two years, obviously. I asked. Jason Licht if he thinks he's a. franchise quarterback, he said, "Yes, we.

do." But they're only, uh, reportedly. offering him a two-year extension. He. didn't want to get into specifics. They. love Baker. The one thing they know. about Baker, uh, a couple things. One, he's absolutely going to play his ass. off. I mean, that's just who this guy. is, you know, the walk-on at Texas Tech, Oklahoma, Heisman Trophy, all that. stuff. So, they're not concerned about. his approach and how he's going to. react. If anything, it's going to make. him more motivated. He says, the Jason. Licht says he's in there at 4:00 in the. morning. I'd like to see that, but. that's what he said.

Um, but, you know, that aside, um, you know, I think Baker, you know, he. could be franchised. Uh, Jason Licht. made it clear that that's still an. option. Um, if they get to the end of the year. and they don't have a deal, the. franchise tag could also just be a. placeholder until you work out a. long-term agreement. Uh, I don't I don't. necessarily think that anything's closed. on him. Um, but to Baker in his mind it is. If. they called his agent and offered him a. deal that, uh, that he knew Baker would. take, maybe something happens, but I. think right now, the Bucks hold the.

cards as far as leverage goes, and I. think Baker wants a clear mind and and. motivation, and he's using that right. now. >> I got so much respect for the 4:00 a.m. crowd, but I got work to do at night, too. You know, like there's people in. the West Coast that are 3 hours behind. that I have to talk to later. I don't. know how they do it. It's interesting. >> I don't know how they do it. Look, he he looks and acts the part, right, of a of a franchise changing. uh edge rusher and I'm just telling you. man um every single rep this guy is is. 110 and and I just think that that's. whether it's practice, whether it's uh. going to be games. He hasn't played a. single snap in the NFL so you can't put. him in a Hall of Fame but it's still he. sets the tone in you know uh.

and he's going to do that during the. week which I think is really important. for these guys. He's everything he's. advertised. We'll we'll let him play out. his career and and and see if we see him. in Canton one day. I don't want to put. him there but the guy um for a young. player, serious cat man and and I'll. tell you another guy, Josiah Trotter. started a fight the other day with some. big dudes in practice in the outdoor or. the indoor facility and hey that dude. you and and as Cristobal says he goes, that's the guy I wouldn't want to mess.

with right there. So they got a couple. of really good young foundational pieces. on defense to work with. >> Yeah, it's a West Virginia guy, okay? And then you got Cristobal's guy down. there and. everything we know about Cristobal is. like all their guys are going to want to. fight you. They're about it. Dan Campbell, a big staple of what. he's done in training camps in the past. has also been, you know, the joint. practices and and going against other.

teams. They got They scrapped that this. year, too. Like, we're just going to. focus on ourselves. We're going to get. back to. uh what what built us, you know, probably starting in that second half of. the 2023 season. Let's get back to those. fundamentals and and the core identity. of this team. So, uh you definitely felt. that. You've seen it. I mean, it's been. a lot quieter, which I don't think is a. bad thing. I think that these guys. they've all told you that, you know, when when you when you win back-to-back. division championships and go to the NFC. Championship 2 years ago and then you. missed the playoffs, man, like there's. It's going to be a bad taste in your.

mouth. So, uh definitely just been a lot. of work. I would tell you that. And just. a lot of guys that kind of want to go. out there and and and get back to you. know, the core basics of of what put. Now, granted, the offense. scored a bunch of points last year, so. people forget about that. Defense wasn't. able to get a lot of stops and got a lot. of injuries. And I think some people. have said the defense looked a little. bland, little bit basic. Are they going. to have to make some plays this year on. that side? We shall see. But we.

obviously know Jared Goff offense, specifically, will only go how the. protection will go. Go ahead, Tone. >> Yeah, T H, the big difference between. those winning seasons and last season. was the offensive line. There was some. turnover, there was some injuries, and. it wasn't the offensive line that got. them to the NFC Championship the year. before. Now, they bring in Graham. Glasgow at center. They draft Blake. Miller to play right tackle, I believe, out of Clemson. And then they're going. to move Sewell over to left. Are we. feeling better about the offensive line. this year than we did last year? Yeah, I would say so. I I think that. certainly look losing Graham Glasgow and.

people can say what they want about him. last year, but Taylor Decker on the left. side was a staple for you know, a decade. over there for Detroit. Those are those. are two leadership pieces that I think. you're going to miss. But Penei Sewell I. look I think that just watching him at. right tackle. he would just win blocks because he was. just so dominant and just so much. quicker and agile and athletic than. everybody else he was playing. I think. he's going to be even better at left. tackle. He's going to be a a Trent. Williams type guy where you don't have. to worry about him. You don't have to. game plan around him. You know that left. side is going to be taken care of. Kay.

Mays I mean early returns I think. they've only done three days of pads so. far in camp, but early returns have been. very positive. They like what he can. bring not only in the run game and what. Drew Petzing the new offense coordinator. wants to do, but in the pass game as. well in the communication because that's. an important spot. And Blake Blake I. think he's coming along. I mean it's. it's he's a rookie going against. you know, Aidan Hutchinson every single. snap. And Aidan Hutchinson brings it. man. So there's going to be I'm sure. sometimes that where he's going to look. at some film and probably feel a little.

dejected. Maybe it could hurt the. confidence, but you got to know deep. down that. whatever you do against Hutch, I mean. it's it's going to be easier when you. when you get into the games cuz there's. not many guys out there like that. So. they're starting to grow. I think they. got definitely younger, but I think that there's still some. healthy competitions across that across. that offensive line room and. look at left guard I think you got you. know, maybe three or four guys that are. competing there. So I I think that they. definitely feel better. about the youth that they injected into. that group and like you said Tone, I.

mean that is the staple of. the Detroit Lions especially on offense. We got to be able to run the ball. We. have to be able to. you know, incorporate that that play. action pass where Jared Goff is just so. dangerous and lethal and we got to be. able to protect them on third down too. So I think they definitely feel better. about that group. I don't know how it's. going to shake out here at the end of. training camp, but uh they definitely. got some guys that can go out there and. compete and play at a high level. >> Did you guys think about uh backing up. cuz they're super duper journalists, obviously, and we appreciate and respect. them. But, it does feel like more and. more people are like, "Hey, these videos. coming out of training camp, it looks. like that substation is very on top of. where these guys are practicing." And. then you look at the amount of injuries, and then you look at how many people are. out, and how this has just become a very. consistent thing. John Lynch has come. out and said, "We will look into this, for sure. We know the substation. certainly has their defenses, well. I I. know that they don't believe that this. is real, and there's a Twitter account. representing the substation. I don't.

think that's the actual substation, from. my understanding. I'm not 100% sure, but. where do we stand on that conversation. and this injury bug thing that the 9ers. have had for what, 5 years now? Is this. just kind of what it is, and why do you. think it is? >> Well, the injury bug, I think, is. technically gone back to when they moved. out of San Francisco. They've been. practicing at this facility in Santa. Clara for a long time, though, since the. late '80s. So, they've won Super Bowls. practicing out of this facility, but. they moved from Candlestick Park for.

games after the 2013 season, and you. remember the NFC Championship game of. that 2013 season against Seattle? That's. where Navarro Bowman tore his ACL. It. really seems they've been snakebitten by. injuries in almost every single season. since then, and the only two seasons. that have been relatively. less than average injuries have been. 2019 and 2023, and those are the two. seasons they went to the Super Bowl. So, ever since they moved out of. Candlestick, that's the way that I look.

at it. It just hasn't been good for the. 49ers. Now, obviously this year. is coming off of a really bad one last. season. I think there's a lot of PTSD. from the fan base, from the media. A lot of the guys right now, they're. playing it precautionary, right? Like. Mike Evans is fine. He's sprinting on. the side field. They just don't want. Mike Evans to put in any more reps than. he has to if his quad's a little bit. sore. They not dribbling is fine. So, I think that it's become a, you know, kind of a product of of the hysteria.

And then the first part of me is. like, "This sounds absolutely. crazy." Uh. and you know, the more you thought about. it and uh kind of the the construct of. it and how how it's going to develop, I. think number one in an era of college. football where a lot of baggage talked. about. Unfortunately, we have a chance.

to infuse some fun into it. Uh give a. fan uh a unique experience. Uh but at the same time, you know, I I'm. a bit you know, I want our kids to know. that hey, we're not going to do anything. you know, to put the outcome of this. game in jeopardy number one and number. two, you know, we don't want to do. anything to disrespect the game or. certainly, you know, Robert Morris, Coach Clark and his staff. So, at first. I was a little bit hesitant, as you can. understand, but the more we talked about. it and kind of put a pin in place. So, how. do you tell the lads that you're still. trying to win when it's the opening. drive of your home opener? So, we bought season ticket multiple season. tickets, okay? offense coordinator for your first drive. of your home opener? >> Tone, here's the problem here. It's. going to need to be three drives cuz. that looks like damn three touchdowns. right there. >> you're right, [laughter] coach. >> You're absolutely right. Well, here. here's [laughter] the thing and you. know, this will be I think my 19th year. calling plays, 29th overall. And I'm. going to go through the weekly game. planning process, uh you know, starting on Sunday, Monday, putting the game plan together, working. it throughout the week, uh refining it,

practicing it, and then um you know, my. normal process is to script the openers. on on Thursday and Friday. So, whoever. wins the contest is going to come in on. Thursday and Friday, uh hopefully have a. a uh. a folder or binder full of a bunch of. plays that they would like to run. Uh. we'll sit down and show them kind of. what what we got going on and see if. there's any kind of mesh to that. And. then uh usually the opening script is. anywhere from 10 to 12 plays in open. field, and then we would also look at. the the third downs and the red zone. >> Hell yeah.

>> But like with Tone, we won't get to a. third down, so it wouldn't apply to him, but you know, then you get down in the. red zone, you kind of all right, what do. we like here? How do we tier these. things? So, uh you know, I think it's going to be a. really neat collaborative uh effort uh. where we can take what we're doing this. week in addition to what they're. bringing to the table and hopefully put. some points on the board. >> I can't wait to see it. If you score a. TD on that drive, it's going to be epic. and I cannot and monkey see, monkey do, you know, a lot of people are going to. just be bringing in some drunk rich guy. to come call plays and it's not going to. but we know that it will with you. Now, uh there has to be a question about the.

modern state of ball because this is. obviously happening because of that. Tone has it for you here, coach. >> Yeah, coach, you've obviously you've. you've done everything. You've been an. OC at a power four conference. You've. coached in the SEC, been a head coach in. the SEC. You're a legend at Fordham for. what you did there. And now you're. you're in the MAC as a head coach. So, how does it feel in this modern day? Do. you like is it hard knowing that your. best players are most likely after the. season going to move on to a power four. conference because that's where the. money is greater and that's what they've. earned. And how do you how do you come.

to that situation with your players in. recruiting and everything at the end of. the season with them? >> That's a great question. And I think at. a group of five schools roster. management has become an incredibly. tricky. proposition. In the past three years, we've lost 37, 39, and 41 of our scholarship players, 85 players to the portal. And this past. year, 12 of our best 15. went from our school to power four. programs. So, it's challenging for us in. terms of.

>> change. >> It it. >> What the hell does that mean? So, so. what are you going in the transfer. portal to refill that, obviously? Or is. it all for you recruiting and you just. understand that your high school. recruiting class is inevitably going to. be with you? Like what are you focusing. on and how do you rebuild a team or. culture with all that change, which is. inevitable in the modern day it feels. like, especially for an Akron type. school? >> Yeah, but we didn't have any revenue. share up until this past December. Now. we have a mere pittance, which which. isn't like so when when you understand. the constraints and what you're dealing.

with, essentially here's how it is. I. really wanted to start this thing by. recruiting half of the class with high. school and half with portals and JUCOs. Now that's just not realistic. So, my. approach is when you lose a one, you got. to replace him with a one. So, for. example, we had a defensive tackle go to. Texas Tech. Well, he's a starter and he. was a returning All-MAC player. Now you. go into go into the portal or the JUCO. and replace him with a starter. You. can't replace that guy with a. developmental player. Now, if you lose a. backup on the depth chart, now you can. replace him with a backup. If you lose a. three or a developmental guy, you can.

replace him with developmental, you. know, depending on the depth at each. individual position. But, yeah, losing. guys who you they come in, really didn't. have any other offers, or they weren't. playing at bigger schools and come down, you develop them, they produce. And. quite honestly, when they come into. semi-pro, I had two questions. Um. Uh why are you leaving and what's your. plan? If I agree with why they're. leaving, like if they can make. life-changing money and they could go to. a bigger school and and have an. opportunity to play, I tell them they.

should go. Sometimes they'll say things. to me and. I don't agree with the reason, I tell. them they they should stay. And now, they don't always listen, but but that's. fine. And then I tell them, you can't go. into the portal. hoping something happens, cuz hope is. not a strategy. Like, if you're going in. there, you better have a pretty damn. good idea for where you want to go. So, there's sometimes kids go in and I tell. them, "Hey, that's awesome. You should. go." Sometimes I disagree, but they should never just enter hoping. they'll land somewhere, cuz I usually. don't end up end up well. >> Yeah, because they can't talk to any. other teams before they get in the. portal, cuz then that's tampering. You.

know, it's. >> You know, that. that never happens. What are YOU TALKING. ABOUT? >> [laughter]. >> AND IT'S IT'S FUNNY THAT WE ALL JUST. laughed literally at even the thought of. that. But, that is. I don't think that's just the modern. world. Obviously, college football since. the beginning of time, and I think you. would know better than us, has always. had people working around this system. Now, the system just involves millions. and millions of open dollars being spent. everywhere. So, fascinating stuff. I. appreciate you continuing to fight. through, think of great ideas. I know that some people believe it. may not happen until into the start of.

the season. Certainly an option, but. this is all based on how he feels and. the type of form that he thinks he can. regain. If he could be close to the. Aaron Donald that was as one. one of the greatest defensive players in. NFL history, then he's going to come back. And. that workout this week was a part of. this process. He wanted to have a helmet. on during the workout. The Rams did it. at their training facility. And if he's. got a helmet on, a team-sanctioned.

helmet at the facility, the Rams must. report it to the NFL, which is how it. shows up on the transaction wire as a. workout for the Rams because they don't. want to violate any rules here, but we don't know exactly what that. means. with Aaron Donald being any closer to a. decision. So, my thing with WAR is it's an. estimated stat. So, that's seven games. if that's PCA's WAR, that's seven wins. above a replacement player that you're. getting from PCA in center field, but. who is going to be the replacement. player for Shohei Ohtani? This guy's terrible. This guy is not. good for baseball. He fought through. that. There was a lot of very public. scrutiny, very embarrassing stuff being. said about PCA. And then when he would. go throw the damn ball, I mean, it was. ending up in the dugout instead of where. it was headed. It was like, man, is this. guy broken right now? You you've seen. that. He fought through all of that. Now. he's the odds-on favorite to win the. MVP. That's a special story. I I really. like that type of grit. I like that type. of mental toughness. And it feels like. that epitomizes what baseball is as a.

whole. Now, >> PCA, man. PCA's fiery Pat. He's got that. He's got that dog in him. I got to spend. a spring training, my last year when I. was with the Cubs, I was with PCA in. spring training. He was with us in camp. And my first day there, I'm taking. batting practice in the stadium. And I. hit a ball to right center. I'm thinking. it's going to go over the fence. All of. a sudden, this little white dude, lefty. in center field, jumps up and robs it. And I'm like, man, who the hell was. that? And I kind of joke with him. I'm like, yeah, go catch that one. I figured out he was the kid from the. trade that they got from the Mets, but. he is electric, man. And at Wrigley, Zito can tell you it's cold as out. there at Wrigley Field. So, pretty much. until mid-May for the Cubs hitters, it's. very hard to hit when it's that cold. So, when it heats up in the summer, that's when PCA started going off. So,

the last few games. How How hard do you. think it is for Bryce this late in his. career to move back out to right field? How do you feel about that switch? And. the Phillies with Louis Arraez have been. pretty hot lately. Yeah, that's a big switch, especially. when you go from infield to outfield, that's way different. That's a lot more. long-distance running, and those balls. in the gap that Bryce is going to have. to go track down. That's a way different. than first base. First base, you got. none of that going on. There's no long. distance, but I tell you what, man, Bryce is athletic, and he's made both. transitions, the one in from first base,

and then that outfield when he first got. drafted, cuz he came in the league as a. catcher or the minor leagues. professional baseball. So, he's very. versatile. He can play every position. Uh your Italian brother out here, Jack. Caglione, man, he's made that transition. from first base to right field look. super easy. And completely different. situation here because Kansas City, big. ballpark, a lot of ground to cover in. the outfield. Bryce Harper out there at. realize. It's the first time playing. live football. Practice is practice, but. under the lights, the nerves, all of the. expectations, a lot of these young guys, hey, this is this is their moment that. they're going to realize, hey, I'm. playing in an NFL game. It is a preseason game. We obviously. know that. But it is still an NFL. football game on NBC. I mean, it is it. is live football game. And when you get. that, you're going to have mistakes. And. pass protection is in my opinion is the. heart It's much harder than run game. So. whenever you get into pass protection in. live situations and all the different. things are coming at you, there's going.

to be miss blocks. The good news is we. got Kenny Pickett. We got Carson Beck. We got Haynes King. If Minshew gets some. time, these guys are all running. quarterbacks. All you got to do is make. one guy miss and you're going to get a. big pickup on a scramble. >> Haynes King could potentially go for. 70-80 yards. I mean, he breaks through.
