Hello, beautiful people and welcome back. to Lucas Oil Stadium, the lot house, the. host of the NFL combine for the 39th. straight year. This particular sports. program begins now. FOOTBALL. >> IS AMAZING, BUT THEY DON'T give these. out in football, do they? Now, this is. actually a feel-good golden Friday here. on this February 27th. We have uh we. have American hero and legend Jackie.

Hughes currently in Lucas Oil Stadium. Last night played in Pittsburgh. The. Pittsburgh Penguins fans, the great. Yinszers gave him a massive ovation. before the game started with a USA chant. and everything in between. You know, you. never know how that's going to go. because Sydney Crosby is our guy. Now, at Big Night Out about a year ago, I. asked Sydney Crosby if he wanted to join. Team America because of how long he has. lived in Pittsburgh. He turned me down. A lot of people felt like that was. incredibly disrespectful to ask the. question, but is it now?

But Jack Hughes obviously getting the. respect that he earned in the biggest. stage that hockey has. 26 million people. were watching in a morning game, 5:00. a.m. Pacific, 8:00 a.m. Eastern. Canada with an incredible finish from. Jack Hughes in overtime. He ate a stick. earlier in the game. Lost a tooth. Looked like a legend. Became one. immediately as he goes five hole. He is. in the building as he travels to St. Louis for his game tomorrow. We're. incredibly thankful that he is here. And. uh he came up to the suite and he said, "Hey boys, you want to you want to take. some photos of the gold medal?" And. everybody was like, "Uh yeah." And then. he said, "Uh will you hang on to this?".

He had to go. I believe he's in the. balls here at a shower. >> Sure. >> He said, "Shower." Uh I asked uh. Indianapolis Colts and Lucas Oil Stadium. and visit indie people. I said, "Hey, Jack Hughes." And they were like. >> to be. >> Olympic. >> American hero. We know Jack Hughes. They're like the teeth guy. I'm like, "Yeah, he's on his way here. Think he. think he needs a shower?" I think they. shut down an entire chorus of stadium, which is how it should be. So, we cannot. wait to catch up with him. Obviously, that's a special story and will be. celebrated and remembered in the sports. world forever what the boys were able to. accomplish. They're back in their NHL.

season. And I think from the. conversation I had with him up at the. suite, I think that Team USA boys wish. they could have had a little longer. Sully together. I think that's what they. were thinking, but now they're back into. the NHL. The American lads that play for. I mean, you're talking. about coaches asking assistant coaches. what's going on in other places, scouts, talking to other scouts, GMs, talking to. agents, and all this is happening in a.

couple different watering holes around. Indianapolis. And I happen to be in a. couple of them with me and Gumby really. put on a good performance last night I. must say for the boys. But we it was. amazing getting to see everybody and. like their thoughts on how their team. season went as opposed to what we talked. about for their season or something. maybe that has been chatted about while. you're having a couple us cold. >> beers. We're bigger and faster than ever at the. NFL combine and today should be the same. as yesterday and tomorrow will be the. same thing. I think what we saw. yesterday is an indicator for what's. about to happen. They are fast, they are. strong, and it seems like they're more. mature than they've ever been. You don't. see any like happening cuz.

these guys have been millionaires since. they're 18 years old. Fascinating. development where the league's headed. Nothing but pride in where it is. Let's. go to one half of the hammer. Don. yesterday because they are the big names. at the top of the draft and they. absolutely delivered. You have to start. with Sunny Styles who athletically when. you look at all the athletic scores when. you combine all the events had possibly. the top one or two combine of all time. Okay, you jump 43 and a half inches. He. was he was a an incredible basketball. player in high school. So that's not. surprising. Then he runs a 447. Broad. jumps 112. He does all the three cone. and the 20 yard shuttle first in the. group. He was first in literally. everything basically as a linebacker. who's 6'5 240. He was unbelievable. His.

partner in crime at Ohio State, Arl. Reese, who is also 64. >> full name. >> Yes, full name Arll Reese. He only did. the 40, but that was fine. He ran a 446, which was unbelievable. So those two. being at 65, 6'4, 240, 250. Running. those times was unbelievable. A lot of. people questioning why Ohio State didn't. go back to back, win a national. championship. David Bailey, who's your. top ranked edge number one overall pick, where's the number one overall pick. going? >> The Raiders from IU. >> Yeah, thank you. Maybe there's good. questions. There was just a lot of.

questions. Okay. Uh David Bailey, who's. the number one edge rated coming out. He. ran unbelievable. 451 or 45 was his uh. time. And then we talked about Jacob. Rodriguez who had all the production, 250 tackles over the last two years. 15. forced turnovers, whether that's. interception or forced fumbles the last. two years. And everyone was like, "Okay, well, what's he going to do. athletically?" He had like a one of the. top athletic scores. So his four him. running a four five, jumping 38. Like. there's no more questions about this guy. either. So a big days for those guys. >> Three Jack and Daniels with three.

different groups all saying Jacob. Rodriguez would look very good in our. uniform. That that was that was like. three different. >> fans feel the same way. know, you've probably heard in college. football and who are going to perform. today and you're going to be out there. and see what they do today. Obviously, it starts with Caleb DS. He's a. unanimous all-American two times. We. talked to guys at Bama three years ago. when he was a freshman and said this guy. is Hall of Fame soon as he gets off of. the bus. He's been unbelievable. He he. measured this morning somewhere around. 5'11 and a half, six foot, which is. really really good for him. Um I believe. he's going to work out like all the. other uh Ohio State guys and he's going. to be a top 10 pick. So he's someone to. watch today. The freak uh the freak. maybe of the combine after Sunny Styles.

And then a guy. from uh Indiana uh who went to Purdue. was a was a all big 10 at Purdue, Dylan. Theamman, uh who went to Oregon, two. time all-American. He's a projected. first round pick. Um I know a lot of.

draft guys think that he's going to run. really well today and play really. You. saw him fill the alley. He will come up. and hit. He will cover. He's a do it all. safety. of describe or project what he's going. to be in the NFL? >> Yeah, he's there's not a perfect comp. Some guys there's like a name that pops. right into your head, but in terms of. like the the size a little bit bigger. version Matt Ryan was like you get you. get the name Matty Ice because of what. you do late in games and how competitive. and tough he was. So, I see that aspect. of it. I was around Philip Rivers. calling the Charger games. Philip has. got so much juice and energy when you're. around him. Like he's like hyper but. like in a good way. Loves ball and is. incredibly smart. Can talk it inside and. out. So I see some elements of that. And. Phillips obviously was is a big man.

go into the draft room and you've got. the draft board up and on the first, you. know, the left side is is all the. offensive players, right side you might. have all the defensive players. Like I. think I would go in there and just all. the magnets and I probably don't use. magnets anymore. Dating myself, I'd take. all those defensive magnets and just. swipe them off the board. Just taking. offensive players. We're going to get go. pay Tyler Lindbomb whatever the heck he. wants in free agency. We get Colt Miller. coming back. The left tackle's the. hardest piece and they actually have. that piece. Then we're going to go out. and we're going to draft somebody on day. two that's going to plug and play. Like.

you can flip this offensive line. The. the Patriots, I know it didn't end the. way they wanted. They got to the Super. Bowl with four fifths of a new offensive. line. The Bears rebuilt the entire. interior of that offensive line and made. life easier. So, it can happen a lot. faster than you think. Now, if they if. the if the Raiders next year are they. go, you know, 5 and 12, but Mendoza is. getting better and better and they've. got the offense in place, you'd be. feeling really good for a five and 12. >> That'd be Drake May New England. basically year one, even though we got a. whole new coach. in, you know, last year, I think the. league screwed up when you have Eman. Warry, who I thought was a top 15 player. in the draft and the he got pushed down. Because I remember last year the. conversation being like, hey, there's. probably 15 first round guys, but it's a. deep draft. Is it different this year as. opposed to last year? I think that's. pretty similar in terms of just the. number of those guys and then it is. another good group from that you know 16. 17 to 55 like that's a that's a sweet.

then it's a big drop off at a position. of need. So, the only thing I could. maybe keep an eye on here is if the. tackles if you start to see some. separation and there's a gap between. whether it's the second tackle and the. third tackle and you're an you're a team. in free agency that doesn't accomplish. what you need. development program in Michigan and you. know all these guys I think of the 25. guys on that team I think like 21 of. those guys are NCDP guys. So that's. where like the best American kids go to. play and grow up and you play there when. you're 16 17 years old and you get. drafted out of there. So like these. guys, man, there's like I think there's. eight guys off the 96 97 program teams. there. So these guys were going to high. school together and stuff. Like. >> are you one of those guys or are you. younger?

>> I was an 01. So Matt Baldi was on my. team. >> He's an 01. Uh mass kid. Oh yeah. >> Brock Faber and Jake Sanderson on 2002. team. So we used to like I I legit was. in class with these guys, you know, and. um that's where it all starts. And these. guys like grow up playing together. Like. you go to weddings and all these guys. are at the weddings. Like the Matthew. Kachchuck wedding I think like seven or. eight of these guys are there and you're. just like the team camaraderie is. unbelievable. And I mean like the USA.

like the ex USA hockey players man the. way they speak about us and you know the. things they have done for us. That's why. I said it like in that interview. the. the USA hockey brotherhood is so strong. and I don't know what it's like for. other countries but you know we're we. appreciate the guys that have come. before us so much and. >> you know I know that. >> in 20 years there'll be another Jack. And then also like right. after it happened, I guess did it did it. sink in right away what had happened. that you had won a gold for the team? after Quinn I think Quinn my brother had. an interview and uh they asked him like. are you surprised like can you believe. it was your brother and I remember the. night before the game before a big game. it's hard to sleep obviously and we're. in these barracks in these dorm rooms in. Olympic Village right so we're in twiniz. bed and we like probably 11:30 we're. like going to bed and uh I can hear. Quinn rolling around for like no joke 3. hours. And it was like probably 2:00 in. the morning. This is like unbelievable.

And at 2:00 in the morning, he's like, he asked me, he's like, "What are you. thinking about?" And I'm just like, "I'm. just thinking about my my game winner. tomorrow night. What about you?" And he. said the same. And that was it. And we. went to bed after that. But. >> oh, I just I'm getting I'm getting right. now thinking of that, honestly. >> Yeah. Like when I'm a kid, obviously you. dream of it and you just dream of. putting the the jersey on the USA jersey. cuz it means so much and yeah I mean you. just like I did I think I was going to.

be the guy like I believe in myself so. much but whether it was me Matthews. Kachchucks Ike like whoever we were so. genuinely happy for whoever cuz we just. wanted to bring a gold medal home for. our country. Yeah, and you did. And. we're we loved watching it. And uh I. think against Slovakia, you had a silky. cook top ched nasty. So so sick dangles in there at full. speed. Uh I will hit all the hockey. terms that I know in this conversation. But whenever you that nasty shot in that.

particular goal, then I hear Kachchuck, you know, give his little uh rundown of. the potential. So what is going through. your mind there? How much are you. thinking? Are you blacking out? Is it. all just like natural reaction and how. does the puck end up five hole as. opposed to maybe somewhere else in this. particular shot? >> Yeah, I think like that clip if you. bring it back the biggest the honestly. the biggest thing going through my head. McDavid best player probably ever. >> Well, S was Sydney Crosby exists. Thanks. Jack. And then you also exist too. So, let's remember that. >> he was coming down on me and uh all the.

boys on the bench were freaking out, you. know, nervous cuz I'm a forward playing. defense and he was coming down on me and. then uh good defensive play there and. then obviously Lark and Z get up the ice. and kind of like on that play when the. goalie, it's like a seam pass going the. goaliey's going across crease. So, I was. trying to go across the green and he. he's a aggressive fast goalie and he. shot out at me and um like I was looking. low glove low like low on the far side. of the net and you know he shot out at.

me and it ended up going five hole but I. didn't even know it went in because the. puck got wrapped around the like where. the camera holder is. So, instead of it. like the puck usually like shoots out of. the net and this time it like got stuck. in the net. So, I didn't even really. know. And then I turned the corner and I. saw Dylan Lurk and the first guy I saw. just sprinting up the ice and I said. like, "We did it.". >> Holy. Yeah. >> You certainly did, brother. >> That was special for me. I know you were.

out there doing the shot. I was uh in a. hotel and I said, "We did it.". >> Yeah. That's I think that was the cool. feeling like you did. You guys know that. and you talked about being at Olympic. Village. That was the decision made by. you guys, I think, right? to kind of buy. into everything that is the Olympics and. we bought into who your team was. Did. you guys know that? And I heard a lot of. conversations from Sully who obviously. was with Pittsburgh for a long time. We. thank him for Stanley Cups. Now he's in. New York. I heard he gave some great. speeches and were you guys reminding. each other like, "Hey, our country is. like really riding with us right now.".

Like 5:00 a.m. West Coast people were up. 8 a.m. it's like here we go. Every. single moment we were alongside Did you. note that in the moment? And how much do. you guys kind of chat about that or how. much did Sully bring that up? >> Yeah. no matter what happened. So much. confidence. And then Sully just kept. telling us American swagger, American. swagger. That was kind of his motto was. American swagger. And um you know Billy. Garren, our GM at the start of the. tournament brought us in and said. >> he said whatever it takes. Doesn't. matter if the food's bad at the village. Whatever it takes. Doesn't matter if you. know the locker room's too small. Like. whatever it takes. Doesn't matter if the. ice is bad. Whatever it takes. And with. that and Sully just driving home,

American swagger. American swagger. We're the best team in this tournament. We're the best team in the world. like. the our belief just skyrocketed and. obviously, you know, American swagger. brought us a gold medal. >> Yeah. And I like that we got American. swagger, brother. And I'm getting choked. up, too. You know, I uh I had a big. night last night. We we are really feeling the love and we. feel so supported and. >> that was sick cuz just when when we got. back home we really felt it and. >> we were just like we were so proud to be. back in the US with a gold medal. >> Yeah. And your the women as well. We. just dominate sport. You guys hate them. I heard. >> Yeah, that's I heard you guys hate. >> I heard you hate the women's hockey. team, dude. It's crazy that. >> village man. Like we are hanging out. with these them so much. The women's. team. We are supporting them. Like we.

were at their games, they were at our. games. Like all these people talking, how many of them watched their gold. medal game? >> Me and Quinn Hughes were were in the. game. We were at the game until like. overtime ended. >> on the glass. >> And we were jumping up and down so. excited for these girls. So excited they. won. And how many of these people. watched the gold medal game, watched. their semi-finals game? Like 10 of the. 10 of our players went to their game in. the round robin. like we supported them.

so much and we're so proud of them. We're so happy that they won and they. brought a gold medal back and that you. know I said it the men's and women's. team both brought gold medals back. So. just unbelievable for USA hockey. >> Yeah, we own the sport. >> Yeah. Yeah. So hey, sorry about it. Now. listen, I do think there is some. political things that happen and maybe. people that have never watched sports. before where not just a hockey game or. any sport ever were potentially the. people that are maybe hopping in to some. of these conversations. allegedly you and your brother the story. was like Tom Brady wanted to meet up. There was a time a schedule and you're. like no I would like to go watch the. women's hockey team. Your mom I believe. is uh women's hockey US women's hockey. like legend from from my understanding. So that narrative getting built, I. assume for you guys was very like. frustrating in this entire thing. And I. think as we roll on, it'll be very. obvious that, you know, we're all in. this thing together. We got we got Megan. joining us here uh in like an hour or. so. She's up in Ottawa. >> Keller.

>> Yeah. >> Yeah, man. Me and her had a great moment. in the cafeteria after uh after her gold. medal game. We played Slovakia the next. night and it was like a a late a late. game, 9:10 game. to get back to the calf. at like 1:30 at night and uh you know I. was in the we were in the pasta line me. and Megan they were just getting ready. to go out again and I just gave her a. massive hug and I said I'm so happy for. you. I'm so proud of you and you. wouldn't believe me and Quinn's. reaction. We were so pumped for you and.

then two nights late or whatever it was. a couple nights later saw her again in. the calf and we took a great picture and. uh she just gave me a big hug and was so. pumped for me as well. >> Yeah. Well, that's yeah, that feels like. that's how probably everybody that's in. the entire thing. Now, granted, after. you win the gold medal and you're in a. locker room feeling euphoria, >> we need you guys to be conscious about. good journalism, okay? We need you guys. to be good conscious about all that type. of stuff. The expectations on you guys. in that moment outrageous, but just know.

that everybody with a brain so pumped. for both you and the women. I believe. they're playing Freeird right now as a. as an ode to you. You boys going wild. over there with a few songs. I feel like. we watched it at 11. Whenever the songs. came on, it was like, "Oh, this must. have been the boys.". >> Must have played uh Dream On like 10. times. It's the best song of all time. Walt Kachchuck and your dad kind of. basically holding each other's, you. know, heads in their hands, just. euphoric after you scored that game. winner. But just talking about your. family, you know, was there a moment. after the gold medal when it was just. you guys or you guys got a chance to. just kind of take in that moment? And.

how huge of an upbringing, you know, with your mother and father being. involved in hockey. Has that played just. in your entire life, you know, let alone. your older brother being, you know, legend captain over in Vancouver, getting traded to Billy G's Wild before. as well, too. Him him kind of having. that connection. But how cool was. >> And there's another one, right? There's. another one of you. >> Yeah. Your other brother, a teammate of. yours, I believe. Like Luke, that that. is also just such a like kind of. historic family of hockey. Like how do.

have you guys had a chance to sit down. just as the Hughes together? And h how. much uh do they mean to you as far as. your hockey journey goes from this. moment? >> So yeah, I'll start with um you know, I'll start with the Keith Kachchuck, Jimmy Hughes celebration in the crowd. That was unbelievable. And I don't know. if they were what they were doing, hugging, kissing up there. >> Yeah. Yeah. Maybe both. >> But so when Quinn that this NTDP um that. I was speaking about before, when Quinn. and Brady were there together, they.

lived together with Big Walt. >> Mhm. >> So those three live together for two. years. >> Wow. >> And like Big Walt means so much to Quinn. Hughes's development. He's got so many. funny stories of Quinn and Brady. Um so. yeah, like the Hughes and Kachchuck. family are so close. Matthew and Brady. have been so good to the three of us for. for so long. And uh it's family. So, the. fact they got to share that together is. unbelievable. And then regarding my. family, um we really haven't had much.

time to, you know, just just break this. down and, you know, just talk about how. special it is. I I I just told my. parents briefly, you know, when I saw. them like like how proud I am to. represent them, the Hughes family name, and I'm just so thankful and and lucky. that they sacrificed everything for us. For them to have three boys in the NHL, it's it's people don't even understand. how hard it is, how much how much hard. work it takes to get one one boy there,

let alone three. So, I'm just so lucky. I'm so thankful that they're my parents. and you know I'm so proud and I'm so. proud that we represent them and you. know everything they've done for us. >> You're so the hockey god just said let's. pick the perfect guy for this whole. thing. >> That that's what they just everything. you do is like with such humility. Why. is that? Cuz hockey is like a sport that. will just beat your ass. Like hockey is. the culture that this entire thing. because every hockey player I met which. is why I think we're all so happy for. the women's and uh men's hockey team.

It's like always say and do the right. stuff. like team always first before. anything else. I assume you're even kind. of uncomfortable with all the spotlight, but it's for the good of the game and. for the good of the United States of. America. Is that just what hockey is? And obviously whenever you grow up in it. with your family, it's just kind of. like, hey, remember this is much bigger. than just you. Is that kind of the. mindset you think of hockey and why your. culture has remained what it is where. you eat a stick, >> lose a tooth? >> Who knows how painful that has to be. Has to be so painful. And then you I.

talked to you earlier. you're like there. wasn't really like a question on if I. was going to like people were making a. big deal out of that. Like you were. almost like confused why it was such a. big deal. And I think it's cuz in every. other sport in 2026 if somebody is given. an opportunity to potentially say ah I. got to look out for me especially for. something you're not getting paid for. which would be the Olympics. It's like. they would definitely bow out of that. you being the guy that you are from the. family that you are doing that I think. showcased hockey in such a good light as.

a whole but also the way you guys have. handled it I think people have fallen in. love with your sport. Why do you think. the sport of hockey has such a good. culture and like what do you think that. means to the future of the sport? >> Yeah, we were talking about it before. but um obviously hockey players are you. know such nail guns really. They they. play through so many injuries. >> Can I start using that nail gun? >> Okay, but we all put it in our heads. immediately. They they play through so. many things. Games games played matter. and they're important. And I'm a guy. like I've gone through my fair share of.

injuries and I always hear fans like. chirping me and like being like but man. like there's nowhere I'd rather be than. playing. Like that's what I want to do. more than anything. And uh yeah, like. this thing like every single hockey. player loses teeth. That's not even a. question. And I know it looks from the. outside. >> gnarly. >> like some big deal, but you know, doesn't matter who it is. Every single. hockey player is like playing through. that cuz it's just whatever. It's more. of just like god damn like got to go. spend time in the dentist chair now.

That's. >> And you were hoping you were hoping for. blood to get the four. >> Yeah. I just honestly Quinn, if you. watch the clip again, I'm like looking. down at my teeth and Quinn's the guy. with the puck for the delayed penalty. and he's like he's like looking at me. and then at the TV timeout he comes up. to me. He's like, "It's not that bad, man. It's only chipped. You're good. You're good.". I was like I'm feeling around in my. mouth. I'm like, I don't know, man. But. um yeah, back to the hockey culture,

like it's always about the team first. Team I I imagine football's the same way. >> kind of. Yo, >> like it's team first. It's all about the. boys. It's a great group of guys. Hockey, the common hockey guy is just a. solid down to earth guy. And you know, this USA group was an elite elite group. of guys and it's so much fun to be a. part of them. So, it was all about the. team, all about the boys, and just all. about being together, united as one big.

group, and you know, bringing a gold. medal home. >> Okay. So, what is the dentist going to. do? Just pull it out completely so you. just have no front teeth so everybody. knows who you are whenever you show up. or I don't know, but why don't we just. keep this? >> Not a dentist reaching out in America. You're going to believe him, man. It's. like, it's hilarious. It really is. >> Yeah, you got the golden chicklets, pal. I mean, they're certainly going to be. looking for something. But uh honestly. why I very thankful when you showed up. here with that grill I was like yes that. that is what it is and I said to you are. we keeping this forever because it could.

Pittsburgh and then off to St. Louis to. play games tomorrow. So I'm kind of just. like dialed in again on playing hockey. And uh thank you. I have no idea like. what my dental plan is yet. who you are now. Like, have you felt. that at all or not really? >> Yeah, of course. I mean, um, you. definitely feel it. Like, it's. definitely it it is a different level. for sure. It's I know people say it's. the biggest goal in American hockey in. 46 years. So, I'm not oblivious to that, but um it's also like the time where I. have to lean into who I am the most ever. in my life probably and just, you know, stick to who I am. you know, all that. other stuff is materialistic and it's. just obviously it's cool and it's great.

and the people that have reached out and. it's unbelievable and I appreciate the. support, but right now is the time in my. life where I have to be I have to be. Jack Hughes more than I've ever been in. my life and and that's what I'm trying. to do. So, I'm proud of this whole. moment. I'm so happy that I was the guy. and like I said, I'm so happy to be a. part of that group. But I I want to try. to, you know, always be humble about, you know, that goal and and and and go. about it the right way. And. >> all right, we'll brag for you.

minutes left when I was in the box. Celbrini had a a rebound play on the. power play. It's just like he stood on. his head and now he's got the highest. achievement an American citizen can win. And we're all the players are so happy. for him. And I live on the same lake as. this guy in the summer and I just see. him fishing all day and. >> he has it on his helmet. He has a large. mouth. >> He's my goalie in the summer for our. summer skates. sick. >> And there'll be mornings where he'll. text my guy Matty Williams and he'll be. like, "Hey man, I can't come in today.

He's just such a chill. guy. But when it's. four on four, three on three, it's like. more iso ball and like guys are like you. can one-on-one someone like you can like. man up a little bit more and um that's.

just like fun hockey cuz it's like pick. and rolls like man up, get your guy and. a little more like basketball I'd say in. like football like with wide receivers. Um like Quinn when Quinn scored his OT. winner against Sweden, he was like. >> he was locked on. He's like, "You gotta. get me the puck like on this guy in this. spot." And um. >> Well, I got a good match up. I I Hey, I. got a good match up. Hey, I got a good. match up over here. We all see it. Give. me Yeah, that's a beautiful thing. practice really is during NHL play just. like with your teams and you go to. overtime and stakes were definitely. higher in overtime. Yeah, >> in the quarters, man, that Sweden team. was so good. Like, we were like, we were. confident, but we were nervous, too, cuz. Sweden's probably the third best. tournament team in that tournament. >> So, when we had to play them in the. quarters, we were like, like, we got to. get our together fast, you know? We. got to play. And, uh, that game was a. dog fight. Great win by Quinn.

>> And then obviously the stakes are the. highest in the gold medal game. And they. have great players. They have the best. players in the world. We're. the best team in this tournament. You. got to believe." And we went out in the. third. I think we played a okay third. Held the fourth down. Heli was obviously. elite. Um, we had good looks on the. four-minute power play. Like, we could. have easy won it there. They had good. looks on the power play right after. that. And then, like I said, overtime.

going in, we were loose. We were. focused, but we were like, we weren't. tense. >> And it wasn't like it needs it needs to. be me. It needs to be this guy. Like, it. was like someone in this group is going. to be a hero. That's what Sully said. Someone in this group is someone in this. locker room is going to be a hero for. the rest of their lives. and you know. this whole group like we're champions. now. But. then when they gave me the standing. ovation, it was just I was so grateful. and I just said after the game, I said. like Pittsburgh is such a great sports. town and I'm so proud that, you know, and I'm so happy and grateful that they. like it was unbelievable, man. To go. into an away arena and get a st standing. ovation, man, that's I'll remember that. for the rest of my life. And you know, all my friends and my brothers were. texting me and they said, "How cool is.

Gudro when I was 17 I played at the the. World Championships and you know I'm.

obviously a skilled small American. forward and when I when I went to the. World Championships. Johnny Gudro, Patrick Kane, Clayton. Keller, three guys that I looked up to. so much growing up were all on the same. team. So us four were all on that 2019. World Championship team. And like I. spoke with Mr. Gudro after the uh. Slovakia game. and I saw him up in the. uh family room and I talked to him for. 10 15 minutes and they're just such a. good family. All these guys love Johnny.

They all played with Johnny for so many. years and he grew up with all these. guys, you know, on world junior teams. Um, world championships like Panathan um. Kachchuck played with him in Calgary for. so many years. Like Warinski was with. him in Columbus. Like all these guys. have ties with Johnny and yeah that's. Larks like him and Larks were so close. and all of USA hockey was so crushed. when Johnny Gudro and you know his. brother passed away is such a tra sad.

tragedy and you know for them to include. the Gudro family and for them to be a. part of this man that's they should be. because this is a team that Johnny would. be on and um you know we're just we're. so sorry for the Gudro family still and. they're always in our hearts and we're. glad that they could be a part of this. >> He was there though that Makavoy. >> I felt like there was some things. happening and then you guys do they do. it. What are your thoughts. and what are your team's thoughts as it. kind of settles in in the moment that. you are now the Olympic gold medal. winners? >> Yeah, it was crazy. Um, honestly, the. the rivalry is like one of the coolest. in sports, US vers, especially on our. side. We get to know them very well.

throughout the year. We play them a ton. We don't like each other very much. Um, so to have that as a gold medal matchup. is it's what you dream of and as soon as. that puck went in, I think our team was. so excited to celebrate. We had an. incredible tournament. Um, I think one. of the best American teams to be put on. the ice on the Olympic stage. So to cap. it off that and also with our captain. Hillary Knight breaking records in the. gold medal game to send us to OT. Doesn't get better than that. >> Okay. You said one of the best teams. You you have to be humble to the teams. of the past. You just go back. to when you were a kid and dreaming of. those moments. I didn't really think. about it. Just kind of blacked out in in. the moment. >> That's one of the greatest blackouts in. the history of Yeah. You know, cuz we've. seen bad ones, >> especially last night. I saw a couple, you know, walking around Indianapolis. It was not great. Tell me about the team. chemistry. You talk about we play. obviously with Canada with the PWH. We. just had Jack on. He said he had a. moment with you in the calf 1130 before.

you guys were about to go back out where. he gave you a big hug and said he was. proud of you. It felt like their team. very tight because they've been together. for a while. Will you describe your. guys' team? Is it similar for the. women's hockey team for the USA hockey? And how would you describe what the. locker room was like over there? >> Yeah, we have a really tight-knit group. Um, we've been a lot of us have been on. this journey since uh four years ago. when the Olympic Quad starts. Um, we. have multiple camps throughout the year. a lot of us have played in college or. professionally together and um you go.

through a lot as a team and so that's. the best part about playing hockey like. I feel like it's like the biggest team. sport ever and so when you are working. something for um your whole life and you. get to celebrate with your teammates. like there's nothing better than that. >> Yeah, it's be sports are the greatest. Okay. Sports are the absolute greatest. My daughter two and a half uh whenever. she you know watches this live she was. watching real time. I don't know if she. 100% got it. >> Sure. >> You know, she definely she saw how happy. I was. >> You know, she saw how happy I was, so.

she got pumped up. She's gonna be in. sports. Definitely because what sports. teach women's hockey is so much I think. every time we get a chance to watch it, we love it. What were you doing as a. kid? Can I can I get like the game plan. of what I need to do to Mackenzie? So, like what is the the path for women's. hockey here? Obviously from Michigan. You go and play in Boston College. Now, there's the PWHL and Olympics. Is this a. because the boys I know they move and go. do stuff like what is the women's hockey. path to this point as we try to learn. more and hopefully little Mackenzie.

McAfee has got some dangles that we. could potentially see in the future. >> Yeah, let's get some skates on her. Um. >> honestly, it's a it's a different day. and age now. When I was growing up, I. played every sport under the sun and I. didn't really fully take hockey like as. my number one sport probably until high. school. I was playing softball, baseball, basketball. Um and then I. think once I saw women's hockey on the. Olympics um on TV, I was like, that's.

what I want to do. That's my goal. And. that's when I think hockey was like. number one for me. >> Yeah. Thank god you. Thank God you did that. Con Boston. And is it also kind. of a relief that if you ever do screw. up, which probably never happens, that. she has your back right behind you? >> Oh, it's happened plenty of times and. she's already saved my ass. um she she's. the best goalie in the world, like hands. down. And she's she's done it every. single day at practice. She's done it in. the professional league. So for her to. do that on the Olympic stage, like it's. it's no secret to us. But for the world. to see that, it was pretty cool cuz she. just stands on her head. I think in the.

gold medal game, she had like three off. the head that she just saved for us. Like she she won us that game for sure. Everybody talks about the golden goal, but it was Aaron Frankle. >> Yeah. women's hockey. And um right now we're. about halfway through our season. So. it's a big stretch right here for us. our standings. Um, three points up for. grabs every night. So, you can walk away. a three or zero. And so, teams go up and. down very quickly. It's like always. competitive. The parody throughout our. league is is pretty um competitive. So, any team can win on any given night. Like there's no easy games. There's no. nights off. So, um yeah, Ottawa tomorrow. will be a big one for us.

How how difficult is. it kind of just being like, "Okay, that's over and done with. That was. awesome. like we have had time off, we've gone on. trips and whatnot, but I was so excited. to get back to Boston. um knowing where. our team sits at right now like we have. a pretty special group and um I think. just it's a incredible time in in sports. and women's hockey like to garner that. viewership and all the all the juice. that the Olympics brought into the PWHL. like you're going to see the same. players every night now being opponents. like we're going to go against our US. teammates and uh it's going to be a.

battle so I'm excited it was pretty easy. honestly the first two practices maybe. were a little little hard after the week. off in the celebrations, but uh we're. back to it. >> Yeah, I think the boys are still. struggling. Yeah, I think uh rightfully. so. By the way, you win Olympic gold. medal, you you Yeah, you deserve to have. a little bit of a uh Well, we won't call. it a hangover. >> Yeah, a couple runaways. >> A little carryover. There is a lot of people. that we know in the sports world who. don't watch hockey because they didn't. come from a hockey town and whenever the. Olympics are, they force they're they. watch TJ Oshi doing this thing. They. they know these they remember these. moments. The NHL banned their players. from going to the Olympics. I thought it. was very stupid and they're like, "Well,

we're paying them millions and millions. of dollars and then they go over there. if they were to get hurt. What does that. mean for our team?" So, as I watch. Sydney Crosby get bent like an antie's. pretzel, okay, on the ice as a. Pittsburgh Penguins fan, I immediately. go, why is he even playing in that? Which is certainly what the ownership. was also thinking. I think a lot of. people were. But overall, these. international games that don't have a. lot any money on the line, the sense of. pride that comes from it is a necessity. for society, I think. And hockey does.

it. I think basketball does it as well. Whenever we talk about these Olympics, there's some team sports that happen. that bring us all together. And hockey. is certainly one of them. And even if. people don't have a clue what's going. on, there's people I've heard Stephen A. Smith say this before and I think. obviously he's a very intelligent. person. So, he's continued to learn it. all. He said, "What I know about hockey, the puck is black." Okay, that that's. what Stephen A said. And then there's. other people that are like, "Uh, they're. ice. They do the thing." Like people. that don't know hockey, right? And then. they watch that and they're like, "Wait.

a minute. This sport's amazing." And. that gold medal game between Kling and. USA, both of them go to overtime with. the intensity that it had and the. rivalry that it had. >> Great for hockey. And like. he's just trying to scheme up to beat, you know, the kickoff return unit and. then all of a sudden like, you know, Rodney Harrison walks in and he like. taps some young guy goes, "Get out." Day and the culture and kind of the guys. and the and the people that he has in. the building, you know, and certainly on. the defensive side, you felt it right. away when you walk in the meeting room. and certainly the linebackers, but Caleb. DS and just so many great guys. uh kids. that you know you're coaching so you. feel that competitiveness and you feel. that culture of just competing every. single day. Um but it was you know when. I walked in there and saw those two.

linebackers and and you're like. >> one of those. >> I know. Yeah. Yeah. I'm like I know what. to do with these guys like I've seen. >> you guys give up one first down in like. four weeks or something like that. >> Yeah. You know, and that's always the. funniest is when you know, defense. you're playing, you don't want to give. up anything, right? And then maybe you. make a couple substitutions, maybe. you're up by a lot of scores and now a. first and I'm like a lunatic because we. just gave up one first down in the game. and. >> we ruined it. >> Yeah. It's funny. Dan Lanning, what was that. in the playoff game? >> He put his starters back in. >> Yeah, he they were up a bunch and.

>> JMU took his starters out and then all. of a sudden it was going bad. He was. like, "Nope, this is not how this shit's. going. Get your boys back.". >> We had the same thing. I think it was. later in the season. Um, we hadn't given. up a 100 yard rusher in like 10 games. and so it's it's getting close and I'm. looking at the scoreboard and I'm. looking at, you know, the head coach. going, "Are we, you know, can we get. that other group back out there?". >> Not really about stats, but let's just. shut take the risk back on. >> Hey, history matters though, coach. We. know that. Go ahead, Andrew. >> Yeah, I guess coach, what were you able.

to like you got to state and you know. the expectations there and coach day. says all the time, hey, we can't lose. We can't have a bad day. you came in. your defense just off the charts from. the jump and also replacing a ton of. studs right now obviously you have other. studs in line but you don't know what. they can do yet really I guess what were. you able to do how like schematically. with your defense how was able to be so. successful and how do these guys how did. they take to it to where they were able. to execute so well. >> yeah and give credit to them you know. the players when I got there certainly. change is always hard you know and we. had lost all those great players the. year before and a lot of guys the.

interesting thing was they just hadn't. played you know they didn't have the. game snaps so really through the spring. I was like, "All right, we're going to. teach conceptually, you know, we're. going to kind of talk about structures, whether it's coverage and front." And it. was almost like I kind of like tricked. him a little bit. I was like, "Oh, it's. really not that much. It's just this. front, it's just this coverage." And. then by the time we got to the end of. the spring, you know, and I kind of. listed it, I was like, "All right, look, we can move this with this." And kind of. put all the pieces together, you know, like I do like a chessboard. And then. you just saw their eyes light up like, "Oh, wait. We just learned a whole bunch. and didn't even didn't even realize it,

you know, and that's what made the. multiplicity that we were able to use. throughout the course of the season. And. it really was just, you know, figuring. out what do the guys do well, right? So, it's not about scheme, it's not about. plays. It's really about what do they do. well and how do I put them in that. position so that they can go play fast. and aggressive and certainly you got a. guy like Caleb DS who can do everything. So, it's like, hey, we can put them. here. We can put them there. We can have. a disguise and go here or Arll or Sunny. and kind of just keep mixing those. pieces. And I think they just they're. competitive and they're super smart, super great, and they just loved it. So,

it really grew from there. I think. people ask like, "Oh, is that what you. ran at New England?" I'm like, "Well, no, it was really just a Buckeye. defense. That was our defense that grew. by based on the guys that we had last. year.". >> Okay, so everybody was saying you're an. NFL guy figuring out college offenses. This is like what happens here. You get. Matt Patricia taking on college. offenses. this is what's gonna happen. Do you think that your guys are prepared. for an NFL defense with the that. you were calling? Because that's all. they kept saying is like this is an NFL. defense playing against this and then he. got 44 44 across the board and Caleb DS. who Josh Chapman who is a teammate of.

mine at Indianapolis Colts nose tackle. DTackle he's now working at Alabama. When Caleb was freshman I think it was. the first game we were down there. Chapman came up to me me and Chap still. tight. He's one of the greatest human. beings in here. A gigantic deep old. southern guy to like be loved. And uh we. asked him and he was like gold jacket. Soon as he got here, that guy is a gold. jacket guy. >> So obviously you had incredible talent. at Ohio State, you're going to have. that. But do you think with the way you. were playing and the you were doing. that the transition for them into an NFL.

defense is going to. >> I don't want to say easy, but like do. you think these guys. >> because of running your defense are in a. much better position maybe than other. places? I mean, I really hope so. You. know, I mean, that's the whole goal. I I. say it all the time. Um, listen, those. two linebackers are 6'5, 6'4. I'm like, you're going to get in the NFL. Someone's going to, you know, you know, whether I'm here or not, it doesn't. really matter. You're going to get in. there, but how do you stay in the NFL, right? Cuz we've all seen that, you. know, guys that either go early or guys. that don't even get drafted at all. It's.

such a different game. So, my whole. thing to them was like, we're just going. to teach a little bit differently. We're. going to teach more conceptually. We're. going to learn, you know, the bigger. picture. And I think that is one thing. that will help them as they, you know, have to go into those new locker rooms. and and see those new schemes. And right. when the season ended, you know, I told. all those kids, I said, "Listen, we're. going to we're going to go on a. schedule. We're going to meet once a. week. We're going to Zoom. We're going. to review all the schemes." I said, "I'm. going to put you through the combine. interviews. We're going to, you know, meet individually. We're going to talk. about, you know, your workouts and your. drills." And I said, "You you have to. get an advantage now. You have to be.

ready to go." And they loved it. Like. they we just met every week. And, you. know, you miss them, right? like it. season ends like it's over all of a. sudden and like you miss seeing all. their faces. So, it was great to get on. Zoom and just keep that relationship. going. And Arll last night when he got. done we were talking and he's like man. he's like I didn't really realize how. much we had done and learned and you. know that's all you want. You just want. them to have that chance to be. successful. >> Yeah, it feels like that's probably good. for recruiting too. >> That might help. >> Now, I know you guys are in Indiana's. But, you know, the game um really kind of. walking into that room that that joyful. sort of like love of the game, youthful,

maybe innocent love of the game that I. hadn't seen in a long time. Uh you felt. that right away, you know, especially. the young kids. And then you realize how. young, you know, some of them are. You're. >> I'm like, "How old are you again?" And. they're like, you know, I'm 18, 19. I'm. like, "All right, my kids are this." I'm. like, "Wow, this is. >> had Brandon Graham the year before and. he was 50 years old." Yeah. Yeah. Well, I walked into my first meeting this year. and I'm looking at one of the kids and. I'm like, "Man," I'm like, "Is your is. your dad Duke?" And he's like, "Yeah.". I'm like, "I coached your dad." I'm. like, I look at the kid next to him. I'm. like, "Is your dad Moan?" He's like, "I'm like, I coached your dad, too." I. was like, "What the heck is going on?". >> This guy's grandpa coached.

So, so, uh, I remember spending.

time with him and just loved his energy, but really how smart and, you know, I'm. always looking at how big guys are and. and I was like, you know, he's he's. tall. He's, you know, can stand in the. pocket because a lot of the guys are. just you can't can't see over the. offensive lineman, you know, but one of. the things you noticed right away was. just how tough like how tough he is like. in the pocket taking those hits over and. over. So, >> we definitely want to hit him early as. hard as we could. And Kaden Curry Yeah. Ken Curry who worked on Indianapolis. kid. Yeah, man. He great. Unbelievable.

kid. A smart he's just a ball player, right? So, he goes right off the edge. We kind of had an idea what maybe was. coming and he and I was like, >> "Wow." Like, that was. >> I don't think he's And then he got And. then he gets up and you're like, "Uhoh, >> that was our BEST SHOT RIGHT THERE.". >> YEAH. IT'S LIKE THOSE Terminator movies. Yeah, we um but he Becker has. been he had been coming on and coming. like you know big catch radius guy so we.

certainly knew I mean. >> we did give up like 13 points so you. know. they were averaging 45 or something but. um. >> yeah you guys were kind of ass. but I would say this you know uh. watching him live and the arm velocity. and the ball coming out of the pocket. was maybe something you can't pick up on. tape but you knew the accuracy you knew. his vision and but um the ball speed and. him able to really get that in those. tight windows and those shots that he. made at the end. >> and every ball is a I think his hands.

Can you tell me a little. bit about Sigetti, your thoughts on on. kind of him as a person that's been. around a lot of the great coaches who. operate in different fashions? What did. you kind of learn about Sik and have you. really looked into who he is as a person. or as a coach at all? >> Well, I think just from afar, I don't. know him personally, but you know, just. admiring how he handled his team and you. know, he certainly breeds confidence uh. into those guys. And a lot of times, as.

we know in the game of football and. especially with young players, if they. can just get that little bit of. confidence, you know, you see that light. go on and then they believe and they get. that belief and then they're rolling. And you felt that. You felt that in that. team. They were tough enough, mentally. tough enough. Um they had a game earlier. in the year. I think it was Penn State, right? And went down and were able Yeah. kind of do all that stuff. So you knew. it was going to be that 60-minute type. of game. >> Tell me about saying seeing him in. practice what he's like. He throws a. good ball. >> He does. He's a great kid. And um. probably early on we were So by the time. we hit training camp, I was like, "Okay,

we're spinning the wheel and see what. what he's got." So trying to win camp a. little bit. But um he's so compassed. He's I would go pre- pract, you know, they're stretching and and um Sunny. would be on one side, you know, and then. a couple of the defensive guys be and. I'd walk up and be like, "Hey, Sunny, what are we looking at? You want to go. double mug? Do you want to go five down, six down?" And just kind of But Julian. was like, he just wanted to go compete. And I love to watch his development, reading coverages, seeing those. different looks and seeing fronts and, you know, hopefully that's what kind of.

got him a little bit of confidence, got. him going early in the season. And he. was great. Well, having Jeremiah Smith, too, is he as as an NFL guy going to. college, seeing Jeremiah Smith on the. field, do you immediately think like, oh, 2008 Randy Moss or. >> I mean, you immediately go, can he pass. rush? Cuz. my defensive end, yeah, I'm like, hey, good for you on. offense, but like I think can I borrow. down? Yeah, let me borrow him for a. little while because he's huge. Huge. But and then we had, you know, obviously. Tate on the other side and you're going,

"All right, what do we do now?" So, um, he is Jeremiah is unbelievable player, person, all of it. I'm I'm super. excited. easier for the transition of NFL coaches. going back to college or if it's just. more inducive for it nowadays than it. was before? Like what are your thoughts. on that? >> Yeah. Um I think one of the things at. college that became really interesting. for both, you know, probably Bill and. myself was just the ability to actually. build a roster fast, you know, because. of the portals and that way that that. was all working. You can change guys. out. We had a big portal year this past. year, I think we had 50 new guys coming. in, including the Portal guys. So, it's. it's wild, but you can you can get those.

players a lot faster and be competitive. a lot quicker. So, I think that part of. it for the NFL guys are obviously. intriguing from that standpoint. >> So, you guys still just got a money. train coming over there in Ohio State? I. saw some stuff. So, >> I saw you you and Bob Carpenter on Cruz. and I saw you guys raising money. It. does feel like Ohio State though will. always be a place that it's like, hey, Ohio State's always going to be a wagon. Ohio State's always going to be a wagon. You going to college had to be a place. like Ohio State, I assume. >> Yeah, definitely. You know, you want to.

be at the highest level, the most. competitive level, and you know, love to. coach, love to teach. We're competitive. though. We want to win. So, uh, being. lucky enough to be at a place like Ohio. State where you can do that was, uh, yeah, it was kind of a no-brainer. >> That is. >> What's it been like? It's been cool to. see you like bring your family around. It seems like I don't know it just seems. fun for you and your relationship with. all the players. You see you hugging. pregame and during like it just seems. like you have a great relationship. checking the scores and that's kind of. one of the ways they lift their spirits. up and they would all come back and. they'd have these huge beards and I was. like, "All right, well, I'm not I'm not. shaving till you get back." This is two. actually 2011 we played the Super Bowl. here. >> and um so it was a longer season for us. and by the end of the year my beard was. it was it was out there. Yeah, it was. out there. But that was just so those. guys knew, >> you know, when they were overseas and. they were checking home, checking scores. and seeing us, hey man, we're thinking. about you guys and just get home as fast. as you can. So that's actually where the. beard started. That's I think it's a. good look for you. >> Yeah.

like Ohio State where you're getting you. know 40 fivestar guys do you have to be. cognizant of that at all like I mean. obviously this year you got four guys. who might get picked in the first round. but is it tough when it's like hey if I. don't get this guy some burn like. there's a good and he could be he's just. a little raw right now but he could be. you know an all-American in a couple. years but if we don't get him out there. like he's going to transfer like is that. something that you constantly have to. kind of mess around with or is that one. of those things where it's like if you. get too caught up in that then you're. kind of just yourself. >> Yeah, it's a really great question. I. think for us what it what we really.

tried to do was just get the young guys. out there because it's important for. their development. Not necessarily worry. about, you know, somebody not getting. playing time, but they've got to go get. the reps. You know, you just that's the. only way you can get better. You know, for us in our sport, it's different than. basketball baseball. like you play games. in basketball and baseball and can get. better. We only have so many. opportunities. So, it's either practice. and then those live game reps. If you. can get those young guys in, maybe over. a course of four or five weeks, you can. build up 50 60 reps so that later in the.

season, which now college football is. much longer. Um, and that guy has to go. play. He's had that game experience. So, it's more of that I think is really. important for us to make sure those guys. are ready to go if that happens. How. tough is it for you NFL people to just. realize that the Big 10 is. >> it's the one now. >> Yeah. I mean, it's not tough for me. I'm. in the Big 10, so I think I'm all right, you know. >> Yeah, but you're friends in the. ones that are walking around here. >> because I think it's hard for media. people to buy like I think it's hard for. some media people to buy into Mendoza.
