football eve of great weekend, September. 25th, 2026. This sports program begins. now. Football. is the greatest thing on earth. That's. AJ Hawk who is live in the Thunderdome. in Indianapolis, Indiana. And AJ, I. appreciate the hell out of you making. the trip over there to Indianapolis. Now, a team took a trip to Lambo. A team. took a trip to history and to lure of. what football is last night as being one. of the worst teams in the history of the. NFL. If they were to go another couple.

drives without making it to the red. zone, it would have been the worst start. in the history of an offense for the. Atlanta Falcons in the history of the. league because they hadn't even had a. play in the red zone. All of a sudden, Michael Pennock his first time getting a. start in 312 days, 317 days. We've heard. multiple different numbers. Nonetheless, a long ass time. And Stfansky and the. Atlanta Falcons look like a completely. different football team. They might be. AJ the best football team on earth right. now. Now, you wonder, how can a team go.

from absolute ass to absolute class? Well, it's with a quarterback who might. be very efficient. Now, Kevin Stfansky. is a gentleman who uh con man, I I I. know that you and I have talked about a. little bit. He went to bed on Wednesday. night praying to God, the football gods, whichever god he believes in, whatever. gods are out there, maybe uh past. friends and family who have passed away, he was talking to them. Just give me a. quarterback is all he said. Turns out he.

might have one in this Michael Penn guy. Boston Connor. >> Yeah, he was unbelievable. I mean, we. talked about the first start for Penn in. 300 whatever days, but he started the. game a little shaky and then he went on. that unbelievable run. But from 2020 to. 2026, Stfansky has had these. quarterbacks. Baker aside, of course, we. all know how that ended up. He kind of. screwed that up or whatever. >> Stfansky screwed that one up. We we. think Stfansky head coach screwed that. up even if it was some other situation. I think Stfansky has to wear that he did. mess up the Baker Mayfield situation and.

they won a playoff game. AJ remember. Baker Mayfield and Cleveland Browns went. into Pittsburgh in an afternoon game I. think and beat them in the playoffs and. they get Baker out of that building. I. think that is a a massive mistake by. Stfansky con man. >> for sure. But aside from Baker the. quarterbacks that Stfansky has had from. 2020 to 2026 it's a long list. Deshawn. Watson, Jacobe Brassette, Joe Flacco, Flaco, Shadur Sanders, Jameus Winston, Dylan Gabriel, Case Keenum, DTR, PJ. Walker, Jeff Driscoll, Nick Mullins,

Bailey Zappy, Cooper Rush, and finally. Michael Penn. Stfansky having a. quarterback. >> and Jack Strand. That's right. >> And and Jack Strand and AJ, it's like. Kevin Stfansky was immediately hired by. the Atlanta Falcons after the failure. that was the Cleveland Browns. I I mean, that's just what it was. That's why you. fire a coach cuz it's so bad. He was. immediately hired by the Atlanta. Falcons. Us I think a lot of people were. like, "So this guy just gets a pass for. everything that was ass in Cleveland.".

It was an absolute trash bag up there. with him as the head coach. Then it. starts the way it does. And then last. night, Bean Robinson, a guy that man, he. just tied a record since the merger. He. he has three 200yard games from. scrimmage. That's the most in tied for. the most in the history since the merger. of the league 1970. I mean, this dude, we're just getting to realize him as an. NFL player. He was on the uh uh Night. Cap uh Amazon show and he was doing an. interview with the lads and and Carissa.

Thompson and he said uh I'll tell you. what, the thing we like about Stfansky. is his uh his leadership and how he he's. able to rally. And he said that uh you. know after the loss to the Panthers, he. came in there and his exact words were. he sounded like Martin Luther King Jr. That that's what he said. And I was. sitting in a hotel room here in. Knoxville, Tennessee. And I was a gasp. Kevin Stfansky sounds like Martin Luther. King Jr. And he basically said like, "Hey, now is the time for us to decide. We can flip the switch. We can do this.

entire thing. Galvanized the team. Michael Pennix comes back and they have. the best performance we've seen out of. maybe a football team in some time." And. we'll have to certainly ask Tai about. that. But this Bejon Robinson character. being unleashed in Kevin Stfansky's. offense, especially with an efficient. and good quarterback in Michael Penn, which is what it looked like as he. continued to get better and better. throughout the game. Atlanta might be a. real problem this year, AJ. And Bejon. might win the MVP. No, I think Bejon. when I watched this game like the first. thing obviously we we expected Bejon to. get a bunch of carries, a bunch of.

touches. I think he only caught two. balls because he didn't have to. He was. running all over the place. It's the. style in which he plays though that I. think is most impressive to me. like has. he ever seemed out of control or chaotic. whatever he every time he gets the ball. he lets his lineman he lets the blocks. develop he has a little bit of that. Le'Veon Bellesque type stutter that. patience it just he feels like he's. always in complete control with 15 guys. around him but just look at these little. moves like these tiny subtle moves and. cuts all that even that little high step.

there on the while he's running down the. sidelines to get an extra few yards like. I don't you can't teach these things you. can't coach these things I think these. are the dude He is so explosive, but his. vision and patience. I've said for years. and years like running backs that have. vision and patience, like you ever do. you ever see Bejian run up the back of. his blockers, we we know guys at all. levels that they'll get the ball, hey, I'm going downhill no matter what. happens and they run right into the back. of their own lineman. Like Bean never. does that. He lets everything play out. He has the patience and he's just he's. just so cool and calm, I feel like, and.

then when he decides to hit it, bam, see. you. No one can catch him. AJ, and I. think to your point, which are all. incredible points to be made by the. all-time leading tackler from the Green. Bay Packers and what he notices from a. running back versus maybe me, a person. that just punted balls for a living for. a little bit, but I think you can have. patience and you can utilize your vision. if you're explosive. You know, like. Levon Bell, he was so incredibly. patient. They talk about that and you. see a little bit of that in Bjon. I. think we all agreed with that whenever. we were talking earlier today. You see. the patience of a potential Levian Bell. He's the best of all time whenever it.

comes to that, but it's because he had. such burst. you know, you can't just be. patient and kind of slow. You know, that. that that'll that'll never happen. because then you're losing yards. And I. think the guys who know they don't have. the elite burst are the ones who are. trying to get it every single time and. they potentially end up in the back of. guys and on the back of their legs. Bejon's burst with the casualness to. your point is just so alienike. I I mean. it just it doesn't make much sense. And. then Brian Robinson Jr. comes in and we. forget about him. Many men,

many, many, many, many men. I do. believe, right? That Brian Rob. >> Yeah, he's unbelievable. So, he gets to. spell Bejon Robinson. If you're a uh a. defense, it's like, okay, actual. two-headed monster. And one of the. monsters might be the best player in. football right now. So, I I don't know. why we didn't see the stench on that. four and a half spread last night. Okay, we pointed it out a couple times like, "Hey, this feels like a weird number.".

Just from everything that's been said. about this Atlanta Falcons team, we were. saying. that's stinky. Now, it's not sage. stinky. You know, it wasn't like that. type of stinky. What it was was like. that seems like that should not be what. that is. It just in my mind this early. in the season that doesn't make sense. We should have went with that because. obviously the sports books know. something that we don't on a regular. basis. We did get a big win last night. Hell yeah. >> We did get a big win last night. We'll break down how we won that, which. was certainly in a cardiac situation. Tucker. >> punch out by Jesse Bates. Okay, where's. he been all season? Of course, he makes. that play there. Then there's a lateral. bounce off of a guy. He catches it. Miraculous catch. Gain six. Nope. That. was a run because it was later. Okay, two drops. Okay, this guy's dropping. balls now all of a sudden. And then we. finally get it by one yard late. Jesse. Bates with a great play. That was a. heart attack. Then uh you know Jordan. Love makes the play of the night for him.

that he threw it backwards actually. Then the guy batted it forwards. But. since the throw is backwards it's. actually a rush. That's not a catch even. though you only need two yards for the. super boost to hit. And then here let's. just feed him one. Okay. Matt Laflur. says let's just give him an easy one. Maybe another easy one. No way. We're. going to be two yards short of the super. boost. Thank you. Tucker. finally gets it and we hit. And uh. obviously shout out to everybody that. rode alongside of us. If you're a little. hesitant because we had lost a couple. times, we understand. Believe me, we. we've been along this road before and I. completely forgot what it was like to be.

sweating like that for a Super Boost. It's been a few years since we've had. these types of situations uh happen to. our boost, but shout out to DraftKings. for letting that one go and shout out to. us getting a big time dub. Even money, maybe we head into the weekend, the best. weekend ever. But I think the reason why. the sports books normally win is because. it's so incredibly impossible to predict. what the hell is going to happen. What. your eyes see doesn't necessarily mean a. damn thing. Uh, let's go to one half of. the hammer. Cowboys AP. Tone. Tone. How the hell are.

we supposed to know what's going on? There's the Atlanta Falcons are the best. team in football. They didn't have a. play in the red zone. Tone, >> I mean, you said it. They they just. looked so bad the first two weeks. And. yeah, that was with Cooper Rush and then. you see the line last night and you're. like, Packers at home. They've won 12. straight at home to open this uh season. It's like it has to be the Packers. But. no, it wasn't. And that's betting in the. NFL. In week one, four teams lost by 20. points. The Rams, the Panthers, the. Bronx, and the Broncos. Guess what all. all those teams did in week two? They.

won. Okay. And then in week two, the. Falcons. Oh, they lost by 20 points. Now. here in week three, they win. So that's. five in a row teams that have lost by 20. points, winning the next game. Now, we. have to watch coming up here for later. on this weekend. There was a couple. other teams that lost by 20 points last. weekend. The Cardinals lost by 20 to. Seattle. They're plus eight and a half. against San Francisco. Uh the Dolphins. lost by 20 to San Francisco. They're. plus 10 and a half versus KC. Wow. And. then the Giants lost by 20 plus to LA. Rams and they're actually favored uh at. home to the Tennessee Titans. So those.

are the three left. Uh we'll see if we. make it eight in a row for teams that uh. lost by 20 to potentially win the next. game. >> AJ, how are we supposed to predict. anything? That's a. really good number to have for all of us. as we try to predict what's about to. take place when we make our picks later. in the show alongside Stanford Steve. But AJ, why is that? Teams are trying to. figure it out right now. Teams are. learning the most here about themselves. early. Michael Pennock's coming back. drastically changes who the Falcons are. Maybe quarterback getting hurt.

drastically changes who other teams are. Why do you think everything's so. unpredictable all the damn time in this. league? >> Yeah, obviously if you have a. quarterback situation in flux, I think. that's the most uh most impactful for. your team. And how Penn played too, though, like credit to him last night. He came out and didn't like, you know, threw a pick early, was not phased, continued on his way like would and did. not let that Lambo crowd get into the. game. So like I was impressed with Penn. what he did coming back, but I think you. never really know like week to week. especially what you'd say the first four. to six games of the season, teams are. trying to find what their identity is.

really. I think last night the Falcons. obviously realized what their true. potential could be. I don't they're not. going to play this well every single. game, but in their mind, why not? Why. can't they do this? They have so much. firepower on offense and their defense. plays very well. But uh on the flip side. of that, the Packers, I don't know. They. got to figure something out. We know. that what they only rushed for 19 yards. or something last night. I know when you. get behind, you can't uh continue to try. to pound the rock, but yeah, just a. tough tough overall night for the. Packers at home, but week to week, Pat, I think we have no idea what's going to. happen on the field. Yeah, and I think. Packers fans are hoping week to week we.

have no idea what's going to happen on. the field because what we saw on the. field last night, absolute. [ __ ]. across the board. Let's go to owner of. the Green Bay Packers, a man who I. assume is rather levelheaded, headed. into a massive weekend for his Iowa. Hawkeyes, our Green Bay Packers fan, uh. our Green Bay Packers representative, cheese head enthusiast, uh Ty Schmidt, how do we feel about everything going on.

with uh the Green Bay Packers? That was. bad last night. There was a lot of. stats. That's the first home opener in. 13 years or whatever they lost. Obviously, it's the most amount of. points they've given up in a home opener. since like 1920 something. It was a long. time. I think it was like the '7s or. whatever the case was. Just an abysmal. home opener, but also something that uh. you know, I don't want to say felt like. it was possible, but they certainly. hadn't been a great football team thus. far. A lot of injury. Ty, where do you. kind of sit right now after getting. embarrassed on prime in front of Al.

Michaels? Okay. Al Michaels had to be on. the call to watch that. You remember the. first Green Bay Packers team he watched? Do you remember that? >> I I don't, but I'm sure like Bart Star. was on the team maybe. >> Exactly. And he's gonna watch that [ __ ]. He was actually on the call whenever. they said the last time they gave up. that many points in a home opener. And. Al Michaels is sitting there saying, "What have they done to my baby?" Ty, what do you think has been done to the. Packers? And where do you sit right now? >> Uh, honestly, I I am kind of. level-headed. It's one of those things. where as you're watching that game, it's.

just and given what happened the first. two weeks, like you just have to you. have to reset your expectations. Like. this is a dog [ __ ] bad football team. right now. It's really I mean it really. doubleheaded take. >> It really is. It really is as simple as. that. Like if you if you've watched them. week in and week out, like there is no. other there's really no other way to say. it. And I think the blame falls, you. know, like that. That's the big thing is. after something like that where you get. embarrassed on national TV or, you know, prime, you know, whatever you want to.

call it. Uh, everyone wants to start. pointing the fingers and a lot of people. are pointing the fingers at, uh, the GM. at Brian Gudakens, which I think is fair. cuz they have the worst offensive line. in the NFL by a wide margin, maybe in. the history of the league. And it's like. I understand injuries are a thing, but. you you like we know that we you you. don't go into a season thinking like, "Oh, our guys are going to all stay. healthy and we're going to be good." And. and clearly the guys they have just. aren't good enough. Jordan Love's been. hit or sacked 27 times through three.

weeks. That's the most a quarterback's. been hit or sacked in the last 17 years. So, a lot of people want to blame him. It's like, well, what are you going to. do? The guy has no time to throw. AJ. mentioned they uh have the least amount. of rushing yards per game of any team in. the NFL. That is kind of their bread and. butter. Whenever they're good, they run. the ball exceptionally well. You can't. you're not going to win many games. running for rushing for 17 yards. And. then, you know, we talked about it. yesterday and I think this goes on. coaching Lafleur especially, but a lot.

of the other guys, they're super. undisiplined. I mean, just the. penalties, like there was a moment last. night, they go down and score. They're. up 7 nothing. They get the Falcons in a. third and 11. Uh roughing the passer. First and 10. They would have got off. the field. Next play, Bejian Robinson. has a 55 yd rush that he takes down to. like the four yd line. The Falcons score. and then the wheels kind of just fall. off from there. They just they can't. block anybody. Uh they miss a lot of. tackles. The defense didn't look great, but they're on the field the entire. goddamn game because the offense goes.

three and out or is looking at a third. and 11 on every [ __ ] possession, which is kind of. And it it's just it's hard because Pat, we were talking about this a little bit. before the show. Like Christian Watson, I believe again, you know, it's they. they have a game up on everyone right. now, but currently he has the most. receiving yards in the NFL. He's been. great. They just paid him. Matthew. Golden, he had I think he had five. catches for 100 yards last night in a. touchdown. Like you're excited about. that. Um Lucas Vaness, who was a guy.

they wanted to step up, like he's been. good. So they they have all these pieces. and it should be great, but it's like. the front office and the coaching staff. the entire season was just, hey, just. wait until Micah gets back. Micah. Parsons is going to cure all the issues. we have and we're going to instantly. turn into a good football team when he. gets back. That's just not the case. They're very clearly the worst team in. their division, if not the worst team in. the league right now. And it's just it's. hard to imagine that things are going to. get better anytime soon.

Well, thank you for the levelheaded. response there. That was good. You know, it sounds like you're just a-ok. Okay. Heading into a massive weekend for the. Hawkeyes, taking on Michigan. know, we we we've talked about it here. so far like there, listen, there's a. chance with Michael Pennix at the helm. of this Falcons team is a a pretty damn. good football team. So, you know, we. might be thinking a little bit. differently about this game in a couple. weeks, but you get your ass beat like. that, like why why why would you get all. upset? They've looked terrible through. three weeks. like I'm not going to. invoke or invest any emotional energy. into them until, you know, they start. playing better and then I will cuz like. you said, I got a big one this weekend. that I got to focus on. You certainly. do. And the college slate is packed and.

There was a lot. of conversation about who the starter is. going to be. Tua obviously expected to.

be starter cuz uh Penn wasn't able to. practice for like two and a half weeks. during training camp. Thought he'd be. too far behind. He gets his first time. playing with Kevin Stfansky. I mean, Austin Hooper scoring touchdowns, shout. out to him. He's been playing for 45. years in the NFL. Pennock looked. unbelievable and was only getting better. as the game went on. What are vibes out. of Atlanta after last night? And then. obviously we'll pivot to the Green Bay. Packers, which Ty has basically said, I. am forfeiting any emotion on for the. rest of the season. >> I I I heard Tai when I was coming in, he.

is does not seem to be in a very good. place right now. >> We'll get that in a second. No, >> no, he said he's completely fine. He did. not levelheaded reaction. He said he. just doesn't give a [ __ ] about the team. anymore. >> That's absolutely not true. Pennix going to be healthy in time. That. was sort of the competition and you're. like, well, until he practices full, two. is the starter. Meanwhile, like when I.

went there uh for training camp, we. talked to everyone and they're kind of. like like Penn is going to be it when. he's healthy. And then it took, you. know, into week three and they look so. bad with Cooper Rush, bless his heart, as they say in the South you're in right. now. Um, and then, you know, the hope. was maybe when Penn gets out there, then. we can finally show the offense that. we're supposed to be and they got a lot. of weapons. Offensive line is good. They. got a great running back, another good. running back behind them, like this. should be a good team. And then, you.

know, second quarter on last night, it. was like, okay, like these guys are. gonna compete in this division and. they're all not crazy and they're pretty. good. And that was really, really nice. to see. And, you know, Pennix has been. through a lot, a lot of injuries. That. was nice to see him come back as well. >> Yeah, I love watching him ball out. And. then on the other side, the Packers. And. obviously, I think head coach and GM. just got brand new deals. They've. invested a lot of money in a lot of. different players. They seemingly are. ass on prime time last night, making Tai. just want to give up after week three of.

the NFL season. Once again, level-headed. reaction has given up on the team. It's. week three. He uh he's a level-headed. reaction. Thank you for being so. level-headed, Ty. >> I mean, what do you want me to do? You. know, pot and like the team sucks. I'm. not You know what? I'm 35. I'm 35 years. old. Schmidt, obviously, and we are uh very. excited for him the rest of the way, but. that team, I mean, Ed Policy's policy. has been making big plays. They. obviously get Gutun and Laflur locked in. long term. Laflur comes out and, you. know, talks about Jordan Love being his. best quarterback that he's ever had. uh. diagnosing plays at the line. Gutun has. his entire team in here now. He's. basically made all of these selections. and he's the one that has pieced this.

team together. We know he kicked Aaron. Rogers out of the Packers coming out of. that dark hole. Okay, we were very lucky. to kind of learn about all that, but it. feels like there was an automatic. crowning of this Packers front office. and head coach whenever they move on. from Aaron Rogers because I think a lot. of people at that time and still. currently and I think probably forever. don't necessarily like Aaron's opinions. uh as a person. Uh so they probably feel. a certain way, especially in the world. that we're in right now. If you feel. this way, that means you feel this way, this way, this way, this way, and this.

way. And I hate all those things. So. people certainly uh I think don't like. him, the person. So they were kind of. pumped, I think, to see the Packers move. on from him. But on that note, he hasn't. played like great football since then. Had an injury with the Jets and. everything like that. But they were. crowned as like, yes, this is how. everybody does everything. And now we're. sitting here and it's like after a week. three, we're wondering, is this team. ever going to get going here in the in. this particular regime or are we just. thinking it was one bad Thursday night? I. >> I do not want to say it's one bad. Thursday night. That that's like not No,

I mean and actually if you go back at. the end of last year, like it's been. probably a pretty bad two months, I. would say. You know, I think that's. probably fair to say. It's not something. where you're like, "Oh, last night was. an anomaly." Like, I'm really interested. to see where this Packers teams go. Packer team goes. And if you want me to. cheer up Tai, um, I can do it. Here's. what I would say. Uh, Micah Parsons is. not playing. We saw him on the. sidelines. He's expected back, let's. say, week six or seven. He is one of the.

this week with Jake Kaner in as the two. And if Jamus is good, then I'd say. probably that's that's where they'll. roll. It feels. hypocritical. And I'm coming from a. position in a show that is obviously. sponsored uh with DraftKings. So, and. then people could talk about that with. gambling. So, I guess you could find it. But this feels very dumb by the NFL. in. this. I wonder if they're going to start. finding for socks going down a half an.

inch or shoulder pad being No, but. remember they're when they cut down on. the dancing and the personality, they. they had a hyper breakdown of the. uniform because they wanted everybody to. look the exact same. They want everybody. to act the exact same. So whenever. they're done, you're gone. We can just. fill you back in here. So we don't need. anybody sticking out. We don't need sack. dances. We don't need touchdown dances. We don't need your socks down. We need. everybody to look the exact same so we. can just plug in place. And in theory. that makes sense, but then in real life.

with humans who are fans, they go, "This. is [ __ ] boring. Why would I watch a. machine play football?" So it just feels. like some some stupid decisions being. made by the NFL. I didn't really want it to affect, you. know, like what I was trying to do with. the team. But I used to use the media a. lot in terms of my press conferences and. the message that I sent to the media and. So, um, it was always a fight, especially when you were dealing with. success, to to keep people on edge so. that they had the intensity that you. needed to be able to play. Well, >> that's what they were just talking. about, the let down game. And AJ, AJ, you and I have talked about this plenty. of times, and we're pretty similar. humans, I do believe. You know, we don't. need the rah speeches and all that type. of [ __ ] We're we're not really into. that. But we never fully understand. Like, I would have a bad day, and I. didn't know why. Like, I had no idea why.

I was having a bad day. Now, my. preparation was everything. Warm-up was. good, and for some reason, I just can't. hit a damn ball. A there's some games, I. think, where AJ thought he was going to. be fantastic and then he had a bad game. And we wonder whenever we're looking at. other teams, it's like, do coaches know. like if their team's going to have a bad. game, or is that [ __ ] come from nowhere? Cuz there's a lot of potential let down. games. I mean, Miss obviously has the. biggest opportunity to fall off of a. climactic volcano that they were on top. of last week down there in Oxford, but. it's like, how do you judge and how do.

you figure out whether or not your team. is about to maybe fall off a cliff. before we even know cuz I don't even. think players know at that time. >> Yeah. Well, I think that's one of the. most difficult things to do when you're. a coach is to try to get a feel for. where your team is and because we had. weeks where we would really practice. well and prepare well and then be flat. as a pancake when the game. >> and then we had other g times when I am. just pulling my hair out because. practice is not very good, people are. not very focused and then we would get. to the game and really play pretty well.

So, uh it's just so hard to figure out. But I think that, you know, from a. psychological standpoint, what I was. always trying to do is get the people to. have the right sort of psychological. disposition of what you had to do to be. successful on a consistent basis and try. to get them to buy into that and not. give these raw speeches and emotional. things to try to get people up and down. because that doesn't really last. You. know, you got to have the competitive. character in inside of you to always.

take the next challenge and always try. to be the best that you can be. And you. know, that's not normal. I mean, normal. is do what you got to do to get by. I. mean, we all made an A on the first. test, screwed around for two weeks, made. a C on the next one, and get a B. average, and we're happy about that, right? I mean, that ain't how you win a. championship. That's not how you be the. best you can be, but that's normal. >> See, I started at C at the top there, F. And then you see there's a D and they. say D's get you to be eligible for. Bogan. >> That's all I needed out there. But I.

understand what you're saying about. relief syndrome. I I believe is the way. you've potentially described it before. Let's talk about some relief syndrome. potentially. This Texas team now comes. into the eighth largest stadium in the. world here at Tennessee, which is it's a. beautiful place. I'd like to get your. thoughts on playing here and how big it. is. And the color the the orange is. bright. I mean, it's like you're walking. out of a casino at like 6:00 a.m. Now, I'm not saying that you've been there. all night. Hopefully, you're winning. But when it's really dark and they walk. out, it's like this orange is obviously. incredibly bright. They're obviously all.

in. Hypo's got a quarterback. potentially, this young freshman. And it. feels like they could potentially get a. massive win over the number one team in. the country, even though freshman. quarterbacks going against number one. team in the country haven't had a lot of. success. Texas though, Ohio State maybe. was that Super Bowl type mentality. Is. this one that they could potentially get. trapped in because they have so many big. games? How do you view this from both. teams perspective in this big one here. in Knoxville? >> Yeah, first of all, to answer your first. question, this was one of the most. difficult places to play in the SEC. I. mean, I always thought LSU&M and.

Tennessee were the most difficult places. to play, especially if the game is a. game and the fans can stay in the game. I mean, it really gets difficult. But. the one thing that Tennessee does and. they've had tremendous amount of success. is everybody talks about the young. quarterback, but they haven't put a lot. on the guy. They have run the ball so. effectively and this spread offense that. they run where you're so spread out, it's really hard to disguise what you're. doing on defense. And you know, Hypo's a. master at taking advantage of whatever.

he sees out there, you know, cuz it's. this go fast to go slow again. It's not. always go fast. And he wants to see what. you're in to get in the best play. So. that's going to be a challenge. I know. Will's doing a great job on defense for. Texas, but they're going to have to stop. the run and make this freshman. quarterback make the plays in the game. to win the game. On the other side of. the coin, you know, Tennessee hasn't. given up a lot of explosive plays in the. passing game. They've only had two plays. over plus 20 yards in three games in the. passing game, but they've given up a lot.

of explosive runs. So, you know, is. Texas going to be able to run the ball. and control the ball that way? because. Arch hadn't been very good at throwing. the ball down the field so far this. year. Even though he's been pretty good. at throwing the short stuff in the. screens, but to make explosive plays. down the field, which if you're running. the ball opens the window for that, I. don't know if Texas can take advantage. of that or not. >> Going to be an electrifying atmosphere. here. It's not the only one, though. I I. mean, there are games across the board. in the SEC and college football as a.

whole. Let's not just act like the SEC. because they have a record amount of. ranked games taking place that they're. the only ones playing football in. college. >> Well, West Virginia is obviously you. know what's coming up here. I can tell. >> Okay. I was going to say in the SEC, but. you're right. You're right. The next. biggest game we should be talking about. West Virginia Oklahoma State. There are. some games this weekend that feel like. they have long-term repercussions on the. season. West Virginia, Oklahoma State's. one of them, and we will certainly talk.

about that. There's another one. happening down there in&M. LSU. AJ has a question for you about. that, coach. >> Yeah, Texas&M travels to LSU. We know. it's going to be an unbelievable. atmosphere, I guess. How do you see this. game going? I feel like uh I know Texas. A&M is a is a pretty large underdog. I. would imagine that they are ready to get. back out there and and try to write. their wrongs from last week. But how do. you see this game going? You think&m. gives them a good game? I I I think both teams will bounce back, but I do think that, you know, there's a. stat in the SEC when you play at home at.

night in the SEC. I mean, it's like an. unbelievable percentage of the home team. winning. And LSU obviously is one of the. most difficult places to play and Lane. is going to do a really good job of. trying to get this team come back. But. now losing this tight end, Trey Green, I. mean, this guy was a difference maker. That'll be something that they have to. overcome. But I think LSU's defense will. carry them. Uh what I'm concerned about. with&m is quarterback didn't play very. well last week and the defense was not.

very good at all and Kentucky just. controlled the game against them and. they got to get the defense fixed if. they're going to have a successful. season and obviously Marcel Reed's got. to come around and play really well as. well. >> Yeah. So let's continue to talk about. quarterbacks especially in the SEC. AP. Tone has a question for you coach. Yeah, coach, I think everyone's been so. excited about the SEC early in the. season because the success of the young. quarterbacks so far, especially, you. know, the the freshman, the true. freshman, the red shirt freshman, all of. them. Have you did you see over your. coaching career that the young kid young.

freshman quarterbacks coming in? Did. they get better as your coaching career. went on because of, you know, all the. seven on seven camps, the the personal. coaches, stuff like that? Or was it. always like, oh, this is a a freshman. quarterback? How did you feel about that. over the course of your career? Well, I. think that because of the exposure these. guys get early on, uh, they're more. ready to play when they come in. >> But to me, the whole thing to me with. the quarterback position is what is the. guys like mental makeup to be able to. sustain good plays and bad plays because.

some of these guys are going, they're. going to have some adversity. They're. going to have some things that go bad. that they have to overcome. And the. thing that impressed me, and I know. we're not talking about this guy, but. you know, Mississippi State gets behind. 16 to nothing last week at South. Carolina. >> pick I think. >> and this Camaro Taylor guy is like, you. know, [ __ ] happens and just keeps. playing. And I mean, they take the game. over, you know, on the road in a. difficult place to play. And this guy's.

a young quarterback. I know he's not a. freshman, but uh he he's an outstanding. player. So that shows me that this guy. has the right stuff, you know, to play. this position. Uh because you're going. to get criticized more at this position. You're going to get more credit to this. position. So you got to deal with the. ups and downs more at this position. And. young guys some kind times can do that. Sometimes they struggle with it. >> I mean, you called him the truth and the. light and uh I heard you say that. >> and then I picked against him last. weekend on game day and as it was coming.

The defenses are. going to be super super physical. We. know Michigan and Iowa like the way they. play, especially Michigan now with. Whittingham, but is there anything you. can do in the week leading up to that to. kind of simulate how this game is going. to go? >> You know, I I I always try to emphasize. with our players, you know, it's going. to be about what we do, how we play, you.

know, the the uh style that we want to. try to dominate in, be more physical, dominate the competition. You know, it's. not about winning the game, it's about. defeating the other team. So, and it. might take, you're not going to defeat. the other guy on the first play. It. might take 50 plays, but you got to be. relentless in how you compete in an. environment like this. In a game like. this, it's going to be physical on both. sides of the ball. So, you get them. ready for that. You get them ready for. that. And I used to tell them all the. time, you know, you never know how. they're taking your punch. You never.

know how you So, you got to keep. delivering and delivering and. delivering. And, you know, it's going to. be a close game. But you know, one thing. about the NFL, like 70% of the games are. a touchdown or less. College football, there's so many blowouts. So, can you. have your team be able to execute when. it is a close game? That's one of the. things that I always try to emphasize. with our players that they need, you. know, when do you need to be your best. as a football player? It's when the. game's on the line. That's what we try. to train them to do. Hey, I don't know.

if you know a fun fact about the. beginning of this NFL season to your. point about being able to coach. Uh in. the first week of NFL football, four. teams lost by 20 and then they all went. on to win in week two. And then now uh. last week Falcons lose by 20. They went. on to win this week. Michigan ranked matchup, Iowa continuing. potentially to have just nine wins, eight wins, nine wins, eight wins. Now. they have a wide receiver threat, multiple all-Americans on the offensive. line in Michigan in an interesting time.

stinks and somehow they continue to win. and they're they're in, you know, uh, New Year's Day bowls and stuff like. that, but it it just it it really does. feel different. And, um, I don't know. We'll see. The Big 10 hasn't felt like. it's kind of this much up for grabs in. the last couple years because it has. just been so evident that it's either. But when you get to D1 football. and whenever you're at college, you're. playing past high school, you're even in. high school, whenever you're playing. past the volunteer, we're trying to. learn life lessons. If we're good at. sports, we can the winners chose to do. everything that they had to do to win.

Okay? So, we should be celebrating that. We should be wondering what the hell is. going on with Portland State. Now, they. obviously have nowhere near the amount. of talent. Uh, but they also turn down, I guess, the 10-minute running. operation. I guess the head coach comes. out and says like, "We need to take this. how we take this." And I respect him. I. I definitely do respect him, but also. probably not as demoralizing if we do 10. minutes, you know, at the end. So, I. just I hate that that's always kind of. been a reaction from some parts of. society is like the people who work.

their ass off to get in the position. that they're in to become the absolute. best that they can execute in a time in. which they had to execute when we've. seen this not happen in the past. January to spring ball through the. summer and into training camp. First. three weeks has continued to grow. He's. taken great care of the football. He's. been really decisive. Um fundamentals. continue to grow inside of the pocket.

Accuracy uh continues to get better. Uh. we really like what he's doing. Uh. tomorrow he's just got to be him and. take another step. >> What do you see from this Texas team? Uh first of all, he's played in a. lot of big games and uh you can see in. the Ohio State game, uh no matter how it.

starts, he's going to continue to play. and compete and give his guys a chance. Uh we got to be able to present. different looks. We got to win at the. line of scrimmage, get them into third. and longs, and then we got to get off. the field. We got to affect the. quarterback on third down. Uh, but that. comes from playing really good first and. second down defense. >> Yeah. So, obviously on the offensive. side, we know you're big ass brain. >> Mhm. >> Thanks. When you're when you're an offensive. head coach and you bring in an. experienced DC like that, how much how. much do you direction do you give them. or do you let them run with it? And. how's the experience been first year. with Jim Nulls? I know you brought in. some Penn State guys to help with the. transition as well.

>> Yeah. uh coaching staff that uh whether. it's the primary coach at a position or. or an assistant that all has experience. within his system. Uh having been a. coordinator, gone different places, I. know the value in that to get the. information to your players as quickly. as possible and uh start the growth. pattern. And uh we had some talent here. on campus, wanted us to put those guys. in the best position to go play really. good football right from the start. And. uh Jim's a great mind. I've gone against. him. Uh I think he does a really good. job in game preparation but does a. really good job uh adjusting throughout.

the course of a football game as well. Um and he's put our guys in a great. position. Um you know philosophically we. had a large amount of conversations at. the beginning. Uh but then uh you you. got to let him be him and uh I think one. of the things that he's great at is. taking the personnel uh and being able. to put those guys in a position to be. successful. And you look at who we've. been defensively here in the early part. of the year. multiple personnel. groupings uh is a great indicator of. that.

has a plan uh with his uh personnel to. to try to limit that, but uh we'll be. prepared and ready no matter what. happens. >> I think you should maybe have like the. most complicated play of all time ready. I think you got to. demonstrate that as a head coach, too. >> Yeah. Especially with 18 to I mean, it. was like 35 year olds. Now, I think. they're kind of uh, cracking down on how. old. >> Yeah. Not quite as many 35 year olds. playing, but still a few old There's.

still a few old ones. >> Yeah, it certainly is. And hey, go do. your American dream. I'm happy there are. rules in place for this, though. But you. are at a a a wild development stage for. humans, let alone athletes and football. players, but for humans as a whole. How do you help deal with kind of. successes and failures with Faison and. then of course your entire team, you. know, there hasn't been much failure. this year so far. games, but how do you kind of approach. that when it comes to successes and. failures as a football team? >> Yeah. uh the mindset of playing the next. play. Uh you talk about those things um. you know early in the Georgia Tech game. Um you know we don't perform the way we. want to on a special teams play. Momentum swings uh the look the maturity. that our guys displayed in that uh I. liked uh but you talk about this game. when you're going against good. competition it's not going to be smooth. sailing for 60 minutes. Um and uh you.

got to create that mindset of going and. playing the next play and playing that. play independently and uh um for a young. quarterback uh we talk about a lot of. things on the field, off the field, uh. how consistent you have to be and uh up. until this point I've been really. pleased with what Faison has done uh. demonstrating those things. >> Yeah, we've loved watching Fas. showed up in Cleveland as the head. coach. Okay. We'd seen other places. Other places had a parade. Other places. had every single employee out there. clapping. I think you know there was a a. potential fly over at one place whenever. they had a new head coach. You walked in. from my understanding styrofoam cup if I. remember the video of coffee. How you. doing? Going to work. James buttoned. down. No real celebration, no real. dramatics. Just kind of walked in there. and immediately went to work it feels. like. Can you tell me about what it has.

been like to be the head coach of the. Cleveland Browns, which is obviously a. place that has had a lot of head. coaches. You know that being around. football for a long time, but what has. it been like being the head coach since. day one? until now after getting your. first dub. >> Well, it's a special place, special fan. base, and uh it's been great. I mean, it's everything I've worked for to be a. head coach in the NFL. And uh all we. needed to do was uh get to work. All the. rest of it doesn't matter. All the talk, all the fanfare, you guys know this is a.

production business. And that's all we. did was we got to work on where was the. roster at, where do we need to go? uh. you know, we knew we were going to be. working on playing the long game, right, in terms of rebuilding the roster. And. the whole goal was when I got the job, people thought like, well, at his age, he's going to try to do everything win. now. And the way I look at it is, wouldn't it be really cool that 20 years. from now, uh, when I'm 80 that people.

are saying, why don't we do it more like. the Browns? Why can't it start right. now? Why can't it start uh by the way we. uh draft? why we how we develop, right? How we become a consistent winner. And. that started, you know, from the day. that I got here. And then we're going to. continue to do that. Uh the to do it the. best way we can. And uh I think we've. got a we've had a pretty good start. And. uh we got just got to continue to get. better. We didn't put our best foot. forward the first week, but our guys. owned it, fought like hell to fix it,

and continued to battle. and uh and. we've had a great week of practice. So, I'm looking forward to watching us and. get after it on Sunday. >> Huge win against the Buccaneers. Obviously, everybody was maybe crowning. the Tampa Bay Bucks before going into. the year. They pay their franchise. quarterback. They pay a staple in. defense. Maybe a little bit of a. turnover, but the Bucks going to be a. good team. Massive long what, two hour, three, how long was the rain layover and. you guys had to get a big time stop on a. defensive side. How did you handle that? What was your messaging to the team? And.

whenever you come back and get that type. of dub, what does it do for maybe your. culture? What does it do for your locker. room as you obviously have a lot of. season left? >> Well, the guys handled the break great. Um, we played music, we hydrated, we. fueled and we got ready for whether it. was fourminute or two-minute offensively. some of the game- ending plays. But I. just told the guys like we're in the. driver's seat, man. They've got to get. in the end zone. Uh, we've been a leader. on defense for years. We got the unit we. want out there to shut it down and those.

guys came through in a big way, but they. handled it great and uh I thought our. coaches did a great job of dialing into. our players uh some of the looks that we. were going to see uh from their offense. and and uh we found a way to finish. >> Okay, last question for me before the. boys all have their question. The. quarterback competition was the topic of. conversations through all of training. camp. I think you were trying to manage. that as best as possible because. obviously any position matters, but the. quarterback position is the most. important one on the entire team. Deshun.

Watson comes out week one, not good. Been a long time since he had been a. starting quarterback. We had all seen. him when he was at his best back in the. day with the Houston Texans. He comes. out and says some things about the. media, what their expectations are. You. seemingly stick by his side. He gets a. huge win against Tampa. Can you tell me. about your relationship with Deshawn as. quarterback and kind of how you were. able to balance all of that because you. had a lot of narratives that were. potentially at play with every single. word that came out of your mouth? >> Well, sure. And and um and that what.

we're supposed to do is believe in our. players uh just like we would believe in. our kids. And that's all we did was do. everything we can to build a system. where our players can play fast and we. can execute at a high level. And I have. a huge belief in all of our players, especially Deshawn, cuz I've seen it. Now, had he been away from the game for. a while, yes, and playing only whatever. it was, 19 games over five years, that's. going to sting. Uh not only um maybe his. confidence level, but systemwise, like.

who is he? And uh all I saw was a guy. that just continued to work. He had no. reason to to work over the last 22. months to come back. He had all the. money was guaranteed for God's sakes. I. mean, shoot, he'd already had a heck of. a career, but for him to come back and. work like he did and um and again, it's. still a work in progress. We are as a. team, we are individually as a coaching. staff and all of our players. But I was. happy for him all the work he put in cuz. isn't that why we do it? Don't we do.

this for our players to try and create. the best version of our players that we. can and show belief in them and and then. let the chips fall where they may, you. know? I just think that that's I got a. lot of that from John Harbaugh and being. around him. Um the way he would, you. know, speak to the players, the way he. would build confidence and um you know, we we'll continue to grow as a team. because we're we're still very young, especially on offense. >> I love hearing that the fulfillment that. you feel from your players having.

success. Hopefully that only continues. over there in Cleveland. You know, there. was somebody already in a pretty. important position whenever you arrive. Connor has a question about friend of. the program. >> Yeah, coach. Congrats on the win, by the. way. Really, really looking forward to. seeing how, you know, your team develops. and just watching you guys win cuz it's. been a long time for Cleveland. And one. of the guys that's been trying to do. that and turn the whole thing around has. been Andrew Barry. Usually, we've seen, you know, head coach GM come in. together, kind of build the team. together, but you're coming into a. situation where he's already started. that process. How is it working with.

him? How is it kind of learning from him. and also, you know, teaching him some. things of the culture that you want to. instill in Cleveland? >> Well, it's been great. I would agree. with you that there's there's got to be. an alignment in terms of how we see the. football team run and yet the players. that we want to add to the locker room. And. I really thought the year before I got. here that there was an outstanding draft. and I think we backed it up with another.

draft cuz not nobody in an organization. is more important than the personnel. people. I believe that I'm It starts. with that and then the head coaches. second because they're the ones that. select the players. They're the ones. that uh you know in terms of developing. and building the roster and so then we. just take it from there and and and. we've done that up till this point and. we'll continue to do that. But it's been. great working with Andrew. >> Andrew I wanted him to be the Colts. general manager when he was like 28 or. something. I I forget the age he was.

obviously feels like he was built for. this particular position hoping to have. great success in the monkey era. There's. not only uh Andrew Barry and people in. the building looking for success with. you as head coach over there in the dog. pound sir. There's a massive other group. looking for it as well. AJ has a. question for you. Coach. >> coach, so I live in Columbus, Ohio. I'm. around a lot of rabid Browns fans. I. grew up around a lot of them. I guess I. know you were there as the OC in 2019. Now as the head coach, what have you. what have you experienced? What's it. been like with all the Browns fans? I've. always thought like these guys are.

absolutely thirsty for wins and if you. win football games, they will put you on. your shoulders and carry you through. that that city. But right here, obviously, you're high-fiving a lot of. the fans that made the trip down to. Tampa. But what's it been like so far as. the head coach with the whole community. there? >> Well, first off, when we came back out. after the break, I mean, it was a home. crowd. I mean, all those Browns fans. stayed. I mean, they made it as loud as. they could. That was really cool. I know. that, you know, at times you don't when. it's an NFC team and you go down there,

maybe it's once every eight years that. you get down there, but first off, there there's a number of people that. might look at it and say, "Why would you. want to take that job? Why would you. want to take that risk? Why would you. want to go there?" I said, "Are you. kidding me?" I mean, an opportunity to. win in Cleveland and get it right. I. mean, that's all me, man. I mean that's. who wouldn't want that opportunity to. build it starting not from scratch but.

starting and the ability to do it here. I mean where else would you want to do. it but like right here you know in. Cleveland. And I love it. I absolutely. love it. The fans have been great. We're. not where we want to be yet. And I use. that word yet. We're going to fight our. ass off to get there and every single. day. And um it's it's been our players. have all our players have done is say. spot the ball and they go to work and. they practice and that's all you can.

ask. And I just think we're we're just. scratching the surface of where we're. headed. >> Coach, >> everything you're saying makes it sound. like you're the perfect coach for the. Cleveland Browns, >> doesn't it, AJ? Doesn't it sound like. he's the perfect coach for. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. Where else would you rather do. what he's saying? Well, a lot of people. would say I don't know. There's like 31. other places. You know that that's what. a lot of people would say. But you being. perfect guy for the team, perfect time. for the team. What if something special. is brewing over there in the dog pond? Now you get a big time win over the NFC. South Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Another NFC.

South opponent uh obviously this. weekend. Tone has a question for you, coach. >> Yeah, coach. Obviously, you come up on. the offensive side of the ball, but when. you have an opponent coming in like the. Panthers who are scoring over 30 points. a game, Bryce Young's thrown for over. 320 a game. They've been redot to start. the year on the offensive side of the. ball. What's your process? What's your. involvement on the defensive uh side of. the ball for the game plan going into a. game like this? >> Well, first my first involvement is is. let's not have Browns hurt Browns. Let's. not turn the ball over and help them.

offensively. And I've always been a big. Bryce Young fan. I was at Georgia when. he was at Alabama and everybody said, "Well, how have you seen him grow?" I. said, "I haven't seen him grow." And he. was great back then and he he really is. a tremendous player. and Dave and his. staff have done a great job developing. him and building, you know, players and. and a system around him and what he does. well. And so, it's going to be a real. challenge. And, you know, I meet with. Rudy, you know, each week about what the. plan is and and and what we intend to.

try and take away from them because you. got to try and take away something. Try. to make them onedimensional as best we. can. And uh we've got to it really. doesn't matter whether it's Bryce or. whatever, how do we affect the. quarterback, right? This is a. quarterback driven league. If you don't. affect the quarterback, it's going to be. a long day. >> Coach, thank you so much for taking. time. I heard the Browns are not the. Browns anymore. I heard this is not the. same old Brownies from my understanding, even though the entire city of. Pittsburgh will be saying that for the. rest of their life. You understand the.

AFC North a little bit? >> I do. I mean, first of all, I got a ton. of respect for Mike Tomlin. I mean, let's be real honest about it. I mean I. mean I hope to have the career that he's. had as a head coach. And at again the. only way you kill a narrative is to play. better, right? And to coach better. And. that's the way it is. I tell our players. it just happened they got me on a little. roll, you know, about how you play. And. >> the name on your back doesn't matter. It's what you do every week, right? I. mean, that's who we are, right? You the.

expectation is uh how you play, right? And when you don't play well, then you. got to own it. And at that moment I was. just fired up because um in a lot of. ways you are that till you prove it. wrong I guess the best way to put till. you change the narrative that is the. narrative and we have the ability to. change that and like I said I got a lot. of respect for Mike and you know it just. it just hit me at that moment and you. know it really I really didn't have that. planned. It really just kind of got on a.

roll and then I kind of said it. >> Yeah. Well, it is and now and now like I. told the guys like we got to continue to. play good dudes. I mean I I put that out. there. >> I back myself into a corner now. I mean. come on man, help a brother out, you. know. >> Yeah, certainly.
