Last year, two of the top five. teams in free agency were the Patriots. and the Seattle Seahawks. So, all that. money spent yesterday, it does mean. something. Okay. And we got more money. to spend today and a lot of good. players. >> They say you can't win a Super Bowl in. March, it's like, well, actually felt. like Seattle Seahawks certainly helped. Ty, what's your big takeaway as we look. at day two of free agency frenzy? >> Yeah, I'm looking for some of these. teams who really didn't do anything. yesterday to maybe, you know, dip a toe.

in today. Packers early this morning. Benjamin St. Juice, cornerback. Oh, >> because they had to release the guy that. they signed last year on free agent. forensic gave a bunch of money to. So, we'll see. Some of these teams who. weren't really involved yesterday, still. a lot of good players available out. there. >> Let's go to one half of the hammer. Done. Cowboys AP tone feels like there. was maybe some odds movement yesterday. with money being thrown around to these. players. >> Yeah, three teams within a division. Their odds got a lot better. Uh the. Titans made a lot of moves yesterday. They went from plus 750 to plus 600. The. Raiders went from plus 4,000 to plus.

2200. Yes, there's still less. Is that. the biggest movement of all time? >> All time, I think. And then we had a a. jump. We talked about it yesterday. The. Carolina Panthers were in last place uh. in the NFC South. They jumped the. Falcons to go from plus 425 to plus 370. with their moves yesterday. >> Let's go to nine-year NFL vet. They're at 193 or 192.5. million depending upon where you read. at. They're they have real contracts. now. They are now at the point of. kicking can down road, kicking can down. road. Now no longer having a road to. kick it down. These deals have to live.

where they have to live. So congrats to. everybody that got paid yesterday by. them. They're expecting you to be really. good. And also Shuck, you're going to. have to do this. anything during this time right now and. they can't until they are released. Obviously, people waiting on Minnesota. to see the Vikings and Kyler Murray. We'll see if if and when that happens. and Gino Smith, we'll see what happens. once the Raiders release him. >> So, okay. So, Shfter, explain a little. bit more about the Kyler Murray. Wednesday thing. I know the new league. years then, uh, but everybody's acting. as if their contracts are up right now. Why is it such a big deal with Kyler. that he has to get released? Are they. waiting to trade him still? Are they. hoping somebody wants to like, why is. this still happening? >> He has he has I think it's a $16 million.

bonus that's due on the third or fourth. or fifth day of the league year. The. Cardinals are not going to allow that. day to come to where they have to put. more money into Kyler. So, they can wait. as long as they want up until that. point, and they have not released him, but they will and are expected to. release him before that happens. Or are they. holding out hope that somebody will get. super desperate in one of these. quarterback needy teams? >> You you never know how the league. operates. They're not expecting it. They're not counting on it, but you. never know. It's a one ina- million. shot, but it's not costing them anything. to hold on to him for another day or. two. Well, they they don't feel like. they owe Kyler Murray anything. They. paid him all these millions of dollars. anyway. What's the difference? >> Yeah, agreed, I guess. And they're also. going to be paying him in the future, which is why teams are going to be able. to only have to pay him like a million.

bucks like what Russell Wilson did in. Pittsburgh. They're paying him 36.8. million this year. They could hold on to. him up until the deadline if they want. before they move on from him, which they. will. >> Okay. So, all right. So, they're going. to do that just in case. You never know. what's going to take place. And also, yeah, we get the final say in this. entire Yeah, it would have been nice. being that first wave, huh? Some other. teams would have had a really nice setup. knowing that Kyler Murray is their. quarterback while they're pitching other. uh free agents to potentially come join. their team. Sheffy kind of says something, he's not. just saying it like he's always leaving. tea leaves and breadcrumbs around. So, I. don't necessarily think it's a locked. natural fit, though. Um, I would say you. in Minnesota's offense, they just want. the quarterback to play point guard and. allow the offense, the play caller, Kevin Oonnell, to star. I think that. Kyler is such a dynamic player and. dynamic athlete that he naturally wants. to be the star and so trying to fit. that, you know, trying to fit that kind.

of style of play. >> into that offense is going to be it's. going to take some time. I do think that. Kyler is really good in the play action. game, the movement game. He obviously. has plays like this that he could just. make something out of nothing. So, that's a plus. But in this offense that. originated years ago with Mike Shanahan. and um then it went Gary Kubak and then. Kyle Shanahan and Shawn McVey like. they've it's always been an offense that. has elevated. quarterbacks specifically that maybe. aren't the most physically gifted guys.

as far as like athlete runaround make a. play big arm guy. It's always elevated. those guys a lot like a Sam Darnold. And. um Kyler hasn't necessarily needed that. style of offense. So, I think Kyler like. it'll take some time for him to have the. discipline to play in that offense. >> Yeah. The mental uh acceptance, if you. will. Maybe getting cut from a team. though while they're holding you up is a. moment that he can maybe have that. process of just saying, "Hey, let me buy. into what this guy's pitching and I can. kind of cook." Do you think they started. doing that type offense because there.

was a drop off in quarterback play and. they're like, "Hey, if we have the. system and we just get a guy that can. throw a football, which we know every. year there's going to be a guy that can. throw a football, uh we should be able. to have success consistently." Like you. while you talk about I hear you thinking. to yourself, I wish I was in one of. these offenses. >> I was. >> 0 and 16. >> No, no, not that offense. It was my my. start. Yeah, Houston. There's also plenty. of other free agents that could sign. today that we'd say, "Wow, didn't know. that person was available." Or, "Wow, didn't know they were going for that. much." Let's talk about not knowing. somebody was going for that much. 30. million a year to a center is quite a. message from a franchise. The Las Vegas. Raiders send a huge one in signing.

Linder Bomb. And they weren't done. there. They continued to spend. What are. your thoughts on what the Raiders did. debut? And if you're Fernando Mendoza. and you're the fan of the Raiders, maybe. Huh? It's hard not to just buy in. and be like, "Maybe we do have the. pieces. I already got Brock. I already. got Ashton. I assume there's a lot of. dogs on defense that we don't talk about. because we only can talk about Max. Crosby because how damn good Max Crosby. is." Are the Raiders about to have a. little bit of a uh uhoh, we're an actual. football team per uh time in in their. life, you think? >> Yeah. If you look at this graphic and.

all up there all the way from left to. right, it's a bunch of pros. Good pros, not only on the field, but off the. field, in the locker room. These are. guys that are respected and been. respected uh by their teammates. And you. talk about Linda Bomb. So, you're. shoring up the interior of that pocket. for who we assume to be Fernando Mendoza. at, you know, whichever inevitable point. he jumps up to the top of the Dano's. board. I think he'll be the number one. pick in the draft to go to Vegas. So you. sh up that that interior of the. offensive line. You help out your. running game. Obviously Quiddy Pay,

first round pick here. Didn't quite pan. out how we thought he would, but. definitely a lot still a high ceiling. from him. Quay Walker and Dean, you sure. up the linebacker core right there. Terren Johnson, A-Rod was on here when. we talked to him. He mentioned him being. one of the best football players in the. league and he allows you to play a. little more nickel than a lot of teams. do. So all these signings have been. great. Right now, you got to win in. March. Then you obviously have to win in. the draft if you want to be a competitor. once the season comes. >> I love that they're spending. They have. to spend. Now, with the way our market. is, with the way the NFL operates, there. is a floor and there is a top and they.

had a ton that they had to spend, but it feels like they're making the. right decisions. And it's not just the. cap that they were able to move. They're. set up pretty well for the D. What is. this with the Raiders? The Raiders had a. bunch of money for free agency. Seemingly made good moves. Even paid. somebody a brand new. >> 30 million that nobody expected for a. center position. I mean, I think it was. like 12 million more than an explic plus. interior offensive lineman. So, I mean, that's a huge, >> huge jump for whenever you talk about a. position getting paid, but if you need. it and it's going to make you win, we're. for it. I think that's the difference. between us and people that analyze all.

the salaries and numbers and everything. We're a big like, hey, if it's going to. win you a game, >> what's the purp matter? >> Protections rookie quarterback like, >> oh, everything protection like. >> 30 mil, they overpaid for him. It's. like, damn, we don't know that. We have. no idea if they overpaid for it or not. If he ends up being the glue that pulls. together an offensive line that can. protect Fernando Mendoza and block for. Ashton Genty, it's like all of a sudden. you feel like you got the offense. figured out. Then on defensive side, you're going to have to make some plays. Well, bring in some vets over there on. that side that have made plays as well. And then you think about free agency.

being good to them. It's not just that, they got draft season coming and they. got some real stuff to. >> Yeah, they have 11 draft picks in this. upcoming draft. Uh two in the first. round thanks to the Max Crosby trade and. then two in the first round next season. So that's four first round picks in the. next two years. So you can either take. four really good players or package. those to move up or bundling. You could. bundle. I mean what what happened a few. years ago? The Texans bundled. They they. did the thing. They get CJ Stout and. Will Anderson. It it turned that entire. remember remember how shitty the Texans.

were before that on fire. >> They're a trash house. >> Yeah. I mean food with ass. >> We've seen it happen a lot recently. I. mean you get Burrow and and the Bengals. turn around. You get the uh Patriot what. happened with the Patriots. Like it's. the Raiders fans should feel really good. and optimistic right now. Well, and the pieces. like the quarterbacks Tony mentioned. with Drake May and Joe Burrow, like even. those teams missed pieces. The Patriots. O line needed time. The Bengals O line. still needs time. But you mentioned. Linderbomb. They their left tackle. Colton Miller. He's been kind of a. stalward staple there for a little bit. One of those guys, kind of the offensive. Max Crosby, if you will. He's just been. solid. Nobody really, you know, talks.

about him. Never really seen him in a. big moment. And then you think about. like a wide receiver one. Sure, they. don't have a wide receiver one, but. Brock Bowowers, I mean, he he's already. caught a 100 balls damn near in a. season, so that'd be unbelievable. I'm. not so sure Tom Brady hired Pete Carol. on purpose to tank the team. I'm damn. near thinking now at this moment in. time, Brady brought in Pete Carol like, "Hey, this guy's going to run our. franchise into the ground and then we're. going to get the first pick.". >> Hey, that's close to Queen's Gambit. And I, you know, I I get a little. prickly when people say, "Well, they. overpaid for for the center, Linder. Bomb." And it's like, no, that's the tax.

you have to play pay when you're a. crappy team. I call it the crappy team. tax. And for years, the Jacksonville. Jaguars had to overpay to bring guys in. And guess what? That's that's a. requirement. You can't just be like this. big almost stiff but still good but. stiff offensive lineman space. Okay? You.

got to be able to run and pull. Think of. like a Chris Meyers back in the day for. the Houston Texans. Almost like a. Kelsey. Not that extreme, but like that. Okay? Two, you got to be incredibly. smart. The the center is a guy that so. often is telling the offensive line. like, "Hey, no, we're not going to that. linebacker. We're going to that. linebacker because that safety dropped. down weak side. We're changing our. landmarks." You don't want to tax. Fernando Mendoza or any rookie. quarterback with that. You want him to. be able to We call him Siri. Cir I call. it run it. Don't think we're just.

calling this play run the play. Okay? You got to have a center to do that. Naylor's a big deal in relation to. Mendoza because Naylor's a speedster. Guy that can go down the field, make big. plays with his speed. Okay. The thing. that I would probably say that Mendoza. throws the best outside of the back. shoulder fade is the deep ball. You go. to the Big 10 title game, it's the big. post down the middle of the field that. kind of swings the game, start third, second half and the goal. I do think he. throws those really well. So, I like. that. in in specific to Fernando through.

the Big 10 title game, he's phenomenally. tough. I think that his ability to not. allow what's happening in the game to. impact what he's going to do on the next. play is a great quality. It's a great. quality. Um I've talked about he's very. good operating the RPO. He's outstanding. throwing the back shoulder fade. Um I. think he's very physically tough and. mentally tough. Um and then he's been. clutch in all the games that I've. watched late in games. He has had to. make a throw. Not all the games, most of. the games, he's had to make a throw that.

was meaningful and he's made it. tremendous. This looked like it was the. middle of June. All his stuff was. working. Uh he got I I I want to say he. topped out at 100. So like the the. atmosphere, the energy, the environment. mean and what are your thoughts on the. Lions? Start with you Shregs. >> Well, I love Pacheco. Uh he's got to. stay healthy. He was hurt a lot of the. time the last two years. So, he's won. Super Bowls, his first two years in the. pros. The first NFL player ever to win. Super Bowls starting at running back in. back-to-back years to start a career. So, he already has those big game. experiences. Drew Petting is the biggest. question mark. Last year before the. season started, I came on this very show. and boldly said the Lions were not going. to make the playoffs. I caught so much. hell for it, I almost, you know, crawled. to Detroit and said and beg for. forgiveness. They didn't make the.

playoffs. And up and down the offense. was they had big explosions, but it. wasn't the same thing without Ben. Johnson. So, insert Drew Petting who the. response to his hiring by Lions fans was. not kind, was not widely applauded, but. I would tell you Drew Petting is one of. the more respected young offensive. coaches in the league. Despite the fact. Arizona's offense did not hit. expectations the last couple years, he. is looked at as one of these wonderins. as well. And if Jan Campbell and Brad.

Holmes and that organization knowing. that they have a quarterback and Jared. Golf who is not getting any younger and. a wide receiver and Aman Ross Brown and. Penny Su on the offensive line not. getting any younger if they decided that. this was the man I would give them the. benefit of the doubt. You add Pacheco in. there you now have two very tough. running good players in Jir Gibbs and. Isaiah Pacheco. But I do wonder, is that. a downgrade, whatever, or an upgrade from David. Montgomery, who's given them so much.

over so many years? >> Yeah, David Montgomery and uh Gibbs were. a great tag team, but it did clearly. become the Gibbs show at the end of. that, and I assume they're going to. continue to commit to that. Dan, your. thoughts on, you know, you lose Ben. Johnson and it feels like the Ben. Johnson effect was felt immediately in. Chicago. They're trying to chase that. still on the offensive side. What did. you see from MCDC as a play caller that. maybe you like for the Lions going. forward or what do you think they need. to do more of? >> Well, I think with Dan there's a.

identity that he wants. He wants to be. playing football the way his personality. is like that big physical we do what we. want when we want style of offense. And. they lost that last year because they. lost they weren't nearly as good on the. offensive line. That that's starting. point for them. They two years ago and. three years ago when they were like that. in that magical run and Ben was cooking. up these awesome plays, it in part was. because their offensive line was the. best unit in football. And so yeah, they. could run the ball on third and seven. and it was cool and everyone was like,

"Wow, this is awesome." Because on. fourth and one was a guaranteed first. down running the football. I think we. haven't talked about it, but they signed. Cade Mazize if I'm accurate from. Carolina. So you you you bring in Cade. Mazize. Tate Ratlage is gonna be a. secondyear player for them that really. played pretty good football for them. So. now it's like you feel better about. their offensive line now. Taylor Decker. who has been there for. >> gosh a decade now. I believe they have. parted ways. So they're going to have to. find a left tackle. But I do think the. interior of their offensive line will be. better than it was last year and I think.

that will allow them to get back to. football. I I'll touch on Petting a. little bit because Colin Monday Night. Football, we've done it a couple times. together. >> I think he's really good in the run. game. Personally, I think he's he's. really good with the diversity of their. run. He loves using tight tight ends. Obviously, in Detroit, Leaport is a big. part of that. The the asterisk that I. would attach to it is they're going to. need people in that building that are. really good designing their pass game. I. I've always felt even in Arizona that. the pass game concepts, they weren't as.

creative as I want them to be. And so, that's going to be a big deal in. Detroit. >> You need a little bit more spark, a. little bit more pizzazz. >> Yeah. just how you get to the the. formations, the motions, the shifts, the. timings, the releases, all that stuff. Plays are plays are plays. You're not. reinventing football. How you're getting. to them is that's that's the secret. sauce for these play callers and play. designers. It's not Malik Willis, but Gino. could still play quarterback in this. league. And if it was Gino Smith or Joe. Flacco or Carson Wentz or whoever it. was, it's not the future. have a very good young offensive line. So you're putting all the pieces in. place and Gino Smith is a competent. quarterback. I'm not giving this an A+. grade by any means, but at $1.2 million. guy can still throw a football and has. seen a million things in his NFL career. That seems. to be where the most dollars are. when. you get into the second day, not as. ideal. And the longer you wait, the less. ideal it is. Hopefully, for everybody's. sake, Trey Hendrickson gets the deal.

done soon. We'll see if he is. He's been. talking to a bunch of teams that's out. there. But again, the big headlines. while we've been on the show, Romeo Dos. winds up in New England with the. Patriots on a four-year deal worth over. $70 million. There are incentives in. there that could get it up to maybe $80, worth up to 80. We'll see. But the. Patriots land a big-time wide receiver. That's good for them. And of course, the. trade, Gino Smith, remember he played. his first four years of his career in. New York with the Jets. He said, you.

know, famously, I wrote them, they. didn't write back. Well, the Jets have. now written back. Letter got lost in the. mail, but is finally recirculated and. Gino Smith has resurfaced. He's going to. return to the Jets and the Jets will. obviously have Gino Smith this year. He's agreed to a restructured contract. It's just a pick flop. So, essentially, the Jets get him for next to nothing. Gino Smith comes back to New York. It's. a full circle moment in his NFL career. If you're a. fan of the Raiders, if you're a fan of. the Titans, if you're a fan of the. Bengals who spent on defense, if you're. a fan of a team like the Carolina. Panthers or the New York Giants, it's.

all right to enjoy this. It's all right. to cherish the moment when your team is. in the headlines and you're actually. spending the money you have to spend. All those teams got better over the last. two days and I'm fired up to see what we. could do.
