Reddit's Best Liars | Reading Reddit Stories
- Welcome back to some wild Reddit stories. I'm Shane, and today's theme is Liars. and with me are two huge liars. (host laughing). - What up babies? - I don't know why that makes us a liar. - That's what liars do. - That's very liar. Before we begin, guys, we have a hat. Look at that updates. - So cute. - I love it. The colors are so good. Like white into like a nice little orange-ish,
and then to a yellow and then white. - I love it. It's so cute. - Perfect. - You think I could have one? - No. - Shut up. - Oh, what? - I don't know, man. Take it. - Whoa. Really? You look really good. - Alright, sick. - It looks really good on you. - So before we get into this, the theme is Liars. and I have been told to kinda like, pay attention. to things and be wary. I wonder, these are stories about liars, but also I wonder if any of them are gonna have be the case. where the poster ends up being the liar.
So I'm like a little cautious. - Possible. - Wait a minute, wait a minute. You think people are lying on the internet? - I never thought of that before, but it's entirely possible. - I just realized that I'm with YouTube right now. And you two are a little (beep). - What do you mean? - What are you talking about? - You two are the liars. I'm actually the truth teller. I just remembered that. - I have to admit out of everyone at Smosh, I can't picture you lie. I don't think you're really capable of lying that well. Are you? - It's very hard.
for me to lie. - You're such an open book. - I am. I'm an open book. It's very hard for me to lie. Read my book sometimes, it's open. - Are you lying right now? - Well, you'll never know. - Let's get into these liars. First one comes from, am I the asshole? Am I the asshole for lying to my girlfriend. in a video game about lying? Okay. - Okay. - Among Us. - Among Us. - Sorry. - So this is a situation. that I'm quite surprised to find myself in.
I would say it's actually a bit ridiculous. if I wasn't stuck in the middle of it. A bit of background. My girlfriend, who's 25 and I, 27 have been together. for about eight months. Before our relationship, my girlfriend. spent nearly two years in a relationship. with an absolute asshole. Not only did he spend the entire time cheating on her, he also constantly gas lit her. Everything was her fault no matter what. I wish I had the space to describe just. how (beep) awful this man was to her. We met about six months after she finally escaped. from that relationship, from the beginning, she has made it clear to me. that any dishonesty is unacceptable.
to her from anyone she's dating. Even white lies. I bring this up as it's pretty relevant to. what this post is about. I was playing Among Us. - Whoa, you're cool. - Yeah, I am. - You're a really cool guy. - I was playing-- - What the hell? - I was playing Among Us yesterday with a group of friends. when she came over, she watched me play for a bit. before I offered her a try herself, as she had already done a bit of gaming with my group. She really got into it. She really enjoyed it. So I pulled out my laptop, created a Steam account for her, and bought her the game, so we could play it together.
For those who don't know, Among Us is a social deduction game. where a group of players try to figure out. who the imposters are. before the imposters succeed in killing them all. The imposters generally have to be good at lying to win. I'm sure you can see where this is going. Second game in, I'm an imposter and I kill somebody. right as someone else walks into the room, they report the body. Now there's only me, the guy who saw me. and my girlfriend left. He accuses me of being the imposter and I accuse him. My girlfriend is the deciding vote. She doesn't know what to do.
I say, I swear I'm not lying. So she votes for the other guy and I win the game. Girlfriend gets up and says she has to leave. I tried texting her a few times, but she ignored me. I finally heard from her this morning. where she sent me a text saying. that she feels like she can no longer trust me. It not only bothers her that I swore I wasn't lying. to her when I was, I also really bothered her. that she wasn't able to tell I was lying even though we were. in the same room together and she could see my face. She understands that lying was part of the game, but she wanted to believe.
that if I swore something was true, she could believe it. no matter what, now she can't. She needs time to think about what this means. for our relationship. I got very defensive at this point. and told her I couldn't believe she was making. a big deal out of a stupid game. I haven't heard back from her since. Am I the asshole? I don't think I am, but I am regretting ever. buying her the game. - Oh God. This one makes me feel, this is why I don't do this. This is why I do not do this. - Have you played Among Us? - Uh-uh. - Oh, I think you would love it.
- Yeah, probably. - You would love it. - I like to (beep) around and lie in games. - It's FNAF except the people are the killers. Like you're kinda like, but you're--. - That's so fun. - When you're killing people, you're trying to be like, oh, I didn't kill 'em. - Yeah, it's almost similar to like werewolf. But you're like running around on a spaceship. and you can see other people. - Only on a spaceship? - Well, they're like little space guys. - But you're in a bunch of different rooms. You're all running around. You have to tasks, but you might end up in a room alone. with someone else and you kill 'em. And then try to leave really quick. and someone else will go find the body. and be like, who was here last? - Wait. That's so fun. - It's very fun.
- That feels like The Thing, but like--. - Yeah. - Well it was, it was The Thing. - It's literally The Thing. - No, you guys know. what I'm talking about, right? - Yeah. It's The Thing. - When you show up, you're like, who killed Meredith? - The movie The Thing. - Oh, 1974 film. - Yeah 'cause it's a spaceship. There's aliens that are disguised as people. - Yeah, I would love to play that. - It's super fun, but part of it is lying. and like when we played it like it gets heated. Like I would, I'm so bad at lying. that my tell was so obvious. I would get loud and angry.
and I'm just like, it would be like, Shane, I think it's you. And I'd be like, I'm not guys, I'm telling you I'm not. And I'm like, I look back and I'm like, it is. so obviously me, but you feel bad sometimes. But I'm like, it's a game. And Courtney is really good at it. - Oh yeah. - Courtney is devastatingly good at it. - She's such a good gamer. - But it's kinda one of those things. where it's like, yeah, it's a game. And also just because someone's good at lying, a trust is not built on. Oh, well I can tell if you're lying. Trust is built on you wouldn't do that to me.
'cause you respect me. - I feel like this one's tricky. because it sounds like she dated an absolute monster. before him and maybe it's triggering her in some ways. - Absolutely, it's been hardly--. - How long? - They've been dating for eight months, but he met her like six months after. It's not even been like--. - I don't think Among Us is the right thing. to start in the first year of dating. - Yeah. - Especially I would say, especially given what she said of like, lies are unacceptable, even white lies.
- Why would you play Among Us with her? - I think it's one of those situations where like. after how bad her ex was. - Yeah. - She is making him pay. for like what she hasn't recovered from. - Yeah. - Like she needs. to build trust back in general. - This one's really tricky. - It's sad. He's not the asshole, I don't think. But I feel bad for her. But she has to work on this. She cannot go through life like this. - It's also tough 'cause like there's no way.
he understood the scope of it. 'cause if I think if he knew like how bad it was, then he would never have bought her Among Us. - He's saying he regrets. He's just like, oh my God, I wouldn't have never done this. - Yeah but like, that's so tough. 'cause it is a video game and the whole point. of the video game is that you're lying. - Literally a lying game. - And she liked it. - She watched him play. - She enjoyed it. I think it was the fact that she couldn't tell. that he was lying. - Yeah. - I think. that's what scared her. - But that's what I mean, where it's like, just because someone, like a lot of people. are really good at that game, good at lying.
But you can't go off the premise of well, as long as I can tell when you're lying. - I think they weren't ready for that game. - No. - It's also so different. I feel like I can lie in Among Us. Like, 'cause I don't care. Like I know it's like there's no--. - Yeah, there's no guilt involved. It's a game. It's not real. - Yeah. I agree. I also just like, I don't know, eight months in. - Yeah. - Oh, it's clear that it. wasn't a good idea.
- Verdict was not the asshole, comments saying. not the asshole. Your girlfriend needs therapy to deal with these issues. It's terrible what happened to her. But it's also not realistic to expect you. to never tell a lie. to the point you can't even play a game together. Someone else said not the asshole. She clearly has issues she needs to work on if. that is such a problem to her. Lastly, someone said not the asshole. If she understood lying was part of the game, why would she feel the need to get upset over it? I think she needs to get over it and there's an update. - Oh. - Oh my god. - Good 'cause those comments were a little like, all right.
- Yeah. Here we go. Update. First off, my girlfriend and I are still together. We have since moved in together. When I posted my original am I the asshole thread, the consensus seemed to be not the asshole, but looking back on it, I think even when I was writing. that out, that I was kind of an asshole for what happened. I remember reading some of the replies. regarding my girlfriend, how she needs to get over herself. and just becoming more and more angry at those comments. It was at that point. where I was getting angry and wanting to defend her. That I realized that yeah, I was kind of an asshole.
I shouldn't have looked her in her eyes while I swore I. wasn't lying and I shouldn't have become overly defensive. and minimized her feelings by saying it was only a game. I gave it a day or two before I was. going to send an apology. But she contacted me first to apologize for her behavior. I told her she had nothing to apologize for. and that I completely understand. and that I was sorry for how I reacted. Then there was a lot of both of us apologizing. and trying to place all the blame on ourselves. She had gone over to stay at her sister's place. after what happened. At first, apparently my girlfriend wouldn't really explain. what happened to her besides that I lied to her face.
But after a day or so, she finally explained the event. and then her sister actually defended me saying this would. be a really stupid reason to end. what seemed like a good relationship. This surprised me since I didn't. actually think she liked me. It was after this talk with her sister. that my girlfriend called me. We met up and after talking, it was obvious to both of us. that she still has a lot of issues from her asshole ex. that she needs to work through. and that we might have gotten together too soon. But we both really like each other. and we didn't want to end the relationship. So we decided to stay together and try to work things out.
She started seeing a therapist, which has done wonders. I'm so glad that our relationship survived that. She makes me happier than anyone else I've ever met. I couldn't imagine my life without her. and hey, last month we actually played Among Us again. It was her idea. Since I haven't played it at all since. what happened, we had a lot of fun together. Although I did insist we play in different rooms. and I definitely stayed away from saying I swear, which she told me she found kind of cute. - Aw! - That worked out. - This is cute. - That worked out. - And look Among Us brought them together.
Killing people in a game. (Shane laughing). That's really cute. - That was very cute. That was great. - I love that he was like, I didn't think the sister liked me. And she's like, oh, I still don't. - I don't like you. - I just love my sister. - But this was stupid. I like that they both, I think what, what really is great here is they both, regardless. of who's right or wrong in a situation, they both were like, well, what did I, what did I do in this situation? Like I always think self-reflection is the best thing to do. - Yes.
- 'Cause you sit there and you go, I was right. It's like a relationship is gonna eventually be. unstable if that's how you're operating. So that was great that they both came together in a way. - I agree. That's a good base for a healthy relationship. - Totally. - The emotional maturity just be like, hey, like I understand why you feel the way that you feel. And I'm sorry for like the things. that I didn't make you feel that way. - There's also like, to a degree, it kind of, I don't know, people feel very differently about this. in regards to video games, but it's like you're playing Among Us. with someone for the first time.
It's like maybe ease into it a little bit more than going. really hard and like--. - I swear on you're mom's lying. - No, 'cause it's her first round ever. It's like maybe like tell some lies, but like. - Yeah. - I don't know, it all worked out. - He had to know. that he had to do it. and then be like, oh, I'm defending her against the comments. Okay, I need to work this out. - Exactly. Exactly. All right, next story. This comes from am I the asshole?
Am I the asshole for calling my boyfriend. a lying piece of shit for not buying me the perfume. I wanted for my birthday. I, a 21-year-old woman, am really into beauty, makeup, skincare, perfumes, et cetera, and collect perfumes. There's one perfume I've been wanting. for quite some time now, but it's been way outta my budget. I'm a college student working a part-time job. at the movie theater, which pays about 13 bucks an hour. and I have other priorities to pay for. So it's taken a while for me to save up. I'd finally saved up the amount I needed to.
and was planning on buying myself the perfume. as a birthday gift. My birthday was two days ago. I told my boyfriend, who's 20, this, and he told me to go spend my money on something else. and he'd buy me the perfume instead. I told him he didn't have to considering it's expensive, but he insisted. A few days before my birthday, I asked him if he was sure about buying it. and told him again that I had no problem buying it myself. He told me not to worry about it. and said he'd already bought it and wrapped it. I thanked him and figured since he'd already bought it, that I could spend my money on something else. I took my best friend and my younger sister out.
to a nice restaurant and the movies after. I wasted more than half the money I'd saved up. but obviously didn't think anything of it. So on my birthday, my boyfriend gave me my gift. and it was a body spray and bath bomb. I asked him what happened to the perfume. and he told me it was a lot more expensive than he'd. expected and way out of his budget. I got mad at him and asked him why he lied to me. and told me to waste my money on something else when he. could have easily told me he couldn't afford it. and I'd have bought it myself. He called me a spoiled brat. and said I was expecting too much from him.
I called him a piece of lying shit and left after that. I got a few texts from him and his friends calling me names. and saying I'm using him for money. I also got a text from his mom. who I had a great relationship with calling me childish. for throwing temper tantrums when I don't get my way. I honestly don't see how I'm in the wrong here, but I'm not the type of person to not say, sorry if I am. So am I the asshole? Okay so based on my understanding, no,
I don't think she's the asshole. I mean don't say you bought someone something. that if you didn't. - Yeah, he said he wrapped it. - Yeah. - That's weird. - So he straight up just lied. - Like she was like kind of--. - Also body spray is not the same. - No, he did not. - Come on. - Come on. Come on. - Even if it was a different perfume, like don't say if someone goes--. - He just lied. - Because like I've done that. I think we've all done that where it's like, hey, there's something I might get. Like, you're not getting that for me. - Yeah. It's really expensive.
- It's like if someone says like, oh no, I'm not, I'm getting you something different. Or like, yeah, don't buy that. - Yeah. - Yeah. - You know, I feel like, that's a healthy relationship. - People do that and it's like, hey, I'm making sure. - That does kind of suck. because she did spend the money that she saved for a perfume. that she really wanted to go out to dinner. - Yeah, she would've done something different. - Yeah, it would be annoying too. - It's just a weird thing to lie about. - So why is everyone getting involved? Why is the mother getting involved? - Well, yeah, I mean the biggest,
what makes him an asshole to me is that. after all this, he just went and told everyone. - Yeah, he's 20 years old and he just went. and talked shit to all of his friends and like his mom. Complaining about it. - Come on man. - Like grow up. - Work this out with you. - Body spray and a bath bomb. - Verdict was not the asshole, which I agree with. Not the asshole, he lied to you and promised something. and then didn't follow through. You gave him multiple chances to change his mind. He promised you it was already wrapped. and got your hopes up, caused you to spend the money. you had intentionally saved up for this item,
and then acted like it was your fault. you were disappointed and upset. Also, the way he responded to all of this, leave him. OP said, yeah, I'm considering doing that. It's not even the perfume I'm mad about. It's the fact that he lied and then got his. friends to gang up on me. Someone said, not the asshole. Your boyfriend deliberately lied to you, promising you something that you had wanted. and could more than afford for yourself, and then was surprised when you reacted poorly. Honestly, this would be grounds to break up. If he lied about a gift, imagine what other more serious things he could lie about. OP responded, the perfume I wanted was the Bacara Rouge.
540 X straight, $465. - Whoa! Damn! - Yeah, goddam. - Okay. This is different. - That changes things for you? - That's almost $500. - I feel like though, like I don't--. - So she had saved up, so this is something she's passionate about. She collects perfumes, so she's passionate about this. So she's like, hey, I've saved up a bunch. of money for this thing. Did you get it?
'Cause if you got it, I will go spend my money elsewhere. He's like, yep, I got it. So she spends her money on something else. and now it's gonna take her a long time to--. - That's so much worse. - It's obvious too that like he didn't really. care about it that much. 'Cause if he had said like, oh, I'll get it for you. He said it was too much. and so it seems like he just waited. until the last minute to go and get it. No, that's okay. Then that's why he doubled down on the lie. because he is like, oh no, I already got it. I already got it. And he didn't like see that it was that expensive. - And then he tells her like, oh yeah, it was really expensive. - That. - Yeah, he knows.
- Yeah, I mean look, the calls for breaking up is. Reddit's always gonna feel, I feel like says like breakup. I actually agree because they're so young. and it's like, I think like. that behavior is a red flag to me. and more so that he went and told everyone. I'm like, if that's how any issue. between you is gonna work out, just leave. You're in college. - Go explore. - Go have fun. Like you don't deal with this asshole. - Go spend money on your perfume.
- Update. - Oh boy. It's the mom. - She's the asshole. So I did go to his parents' place to clear things up. I sat down with him. and told him I didn't think I could. continue the relationship. He started crying and saying he'd save up his money. and never lie to me again. I told him that the perfume isn't the problem. and I wouldn't have cared at all if. he'd been honest with me. It's the fact that he lied. Then got his friends to call me names and harass me. He said he never did that and showed me their text messages.
I did read through them. and all he said was that I didn't like his gift, which isn't the case. I asked him if he deleted messages, but he denied. I showed him the messages I got from his friends. and he got mad and called them. He basically cursed them out. and told them not to talk to me again. He even offered to cut contact with them, but I didn't really know what to say to that. I did apologize for my words though. 'cause I did feel like I was being too harsh. I did confront him about his mom and he apologized for that. He admitted to lying to her so she'd take his side. He said he knew that she would take my side if she heard.
the truth and he already felt shitty enough. about lying and making me upset. So he didn't want to hear it from his mom either. I did get upset at that. because he was jeopardizing my relationship. with his family just to save face. I wouldn't even have told his mom. So he just involved her for no reason. He apologized and called his mom to his room. so her and I could talk. I showed her the messages between him and I. and explained what really happened. She apologized over and over again. and even offered to give me the amount that I needed. She scolded my boyfriend. and he also apologized numerous times.
I genuinely believe he's sorry, but I honestly don't know how to feel. We've been dating for two years. and he is always been an amazing boyfriend to me. I love him more than anything. and I do see a future with him. I just want some time to think about everything though. He did ask me to stay the night. and I agreed, he's sleeping on my chest right now, but I'm gonna try to go back to my dorm soon. I know a lot of guys told me I should end things. I was really considering it, but now I'm not sure. I just need time to think it over. - She wrote all that while he was on her chest.
My god. He's a heavy sleeper. She's like, oh, (beep), (beep). - There's a little, like, there's no more posts, but there's another update. She did think more about the whole situation. and she did decide to break up with him. - Good. - Just clean slate it. - I think it's fine. I think it's fine just 'cause it's like, that's a big bump when you're that young. and it's just like you're in college.
When you're that young, there's also the opportunity of like a year or so from now. Maybe you'll decide to get back together. I don't know, this isn't to me like one. of those stories where it's like, whoa, this is so messed up. It's like, it is small in some ways, but I just think it's like there's nothing wrong. with breaking up and going. and exploring new things and new avenues. 'Cause I do think he, it sounds like there's some growing up he has to do. He did admit it, I think that's great. But he did also admit like, yeah, I lied to my mom.
so that she would take my side and it's just--. - Ew. - Yeah. - It's like if your first instinct. on the first day of having any. sort of slight disagreement is to go to your mom. and say that, I'm like--. - Mommy. - You got some. growing up to do maybe. - I mean he is 20. - He's 20. They're super young. - They're super young. - That's why I'm like, - Also it's weird 'cause I don't know that. I believe him about the whole friends thing. Like I feel like-- - Yeah, what was that about? - I feel like that's a crazy way for them to react. But if that is how they react.
after him just being like, oh, she didn't like my gift then like, if that's the people. that he is hanging out with. and those are his friends, like. that's a huge red flag. - You think he deleted text messages? - Or maybe he talked to them in person or something? I don't know. It is a crazy reaction. - He was gonna cut off contact with them. Another red flag. - It's just, it's just a lot. It's just a whole, it's very impulsive, very like, I don't know. It sounds like she decided that she was feeling. that breaking up was best for her. And so that's fine.
- Too many people got involved, which makes me think. that he's been saying a lot of things about her. - That's a good theory. - For a long time. - Maybe it wasn't this instance. - Spoiled brat for one time. You're gonna go that far. I feel like he's been talking shit. - It's possible. - These young kids. - These whipper snappers. - These whipper snappers. - You know when a Reddit story, when it starts off in their 30s. that it's about to be some (beep). - (beep) up shit. - It's about to be so bad. - They're like, oh god.
- A 30-year-old to go to Reddit about their relationship. It's devastating. - The first two were like Among Us. and like a birthday gift. - When they're 20, I'm like, there we go. - When you're 20 it's like, ah. He lied about a birthday gift. It's like, it's like, oh thank God. - Yeah. - But okay, this comes from relationship advice. My girlfriend told me she was with a friend, but that friend was with me picking out an engagement ring. How do I confront my girlfriend about her lie? God, this is a doozy. I swear my life feels like a movie right now.
I a 28-year-old man am planning on proposing. to my girlfriend of three years, a 26-year-old woman. Now I suck at picking out jewelry. I'm the type of guy that doesn't see a problem. with heart shaped jewelry. Seriously, why is it considered so ugly? So every time I wanna buy something for my girl, I usually consult one of our mutual friends. My girl's best friends are all friends with me as well. and we all get along well. So asking them for help, picking out jewelry is something I'm used to. When it came time to pick out a ring, I consulted my girlfriend's best friend Justine. Justine and I are quite close.
and she knows my girlfriend better than anyone including me. So when my girlfriend went out to visit her sister. and baby nephew, I invited Justine over to the house. to help pick out a ring. Justine and I looked through a few catalogs. but decided it was a dead end. and it would be better to go. to professionals at a jewelry store. However, I didn't know when my. girlfriend would be coming home. So Justine and I thought of a clever text to gauge. how much time we had. I asked her when she'd be coming home. as I was ordering takeout. and wanted to know when to tell them. to have the food ready by. She responded by saying it would be a few hours.
She met up with Justine to go shopping. Now obviously this took me. by surprise since Justine was standing inside my house. I showed Justine the text. and she looked as confused as I was. It isn't out in the ordinary for my girlfriend to meet up. with people out of the blue like that. for shopping, lunch, et cetera. She's a very spontaneous person. and loves making plans on the fly. So ordinarily I would've believed this text in a heartbeat. However, obviously this had to be a lie. When she came home, she acted completely. normal and I played along. But it's really been hard to act like everything's fine.
We got takeout, ate together and cuddled on the couch after. So far she's caught on a little. that something is upsetting me, but I just can't tell her what, looking at her kills me. I don't know what to do. My girlfriend and I have zero trust issues. and we tell each other everything. So this lie is killing me. I want to ask her about it so badly, but if I tell her I knew she was lying, I'd have to explain why. And I really don't wanna do that. What should I do? I know she lied to me, but I don't know. how to confront her about it. Should I just forget it? This won't stop gnawing at me.
Please help. - Oh, this sucks. - That sucks. - So wrong. Bad timing. - And you have to confront her about it. because if you're gonna take the step to ask her. to marry you, you have to. - I think so too. - You can't forget it. - I think he could say like, hey, I wanted to meet up. with Justine to plan something for you. or something like that. - Yeah. - Like he has to confront her. - Yeah. - Ooh,
what is she lying about? - Some comments here. I know you say you can't tell her why you know, but I honestly think you should. You don't want this to bug you forever. and propose to a girl. that could be potentially hiding something. Just say you were hanging out with Justine. because you needed help with a gift. So you know she wasn't with her and see what she says. Trust and communication is important. and it would suck to know you proposed to a girl. who could be doing you wrong, but also just as bad to sit there. and let that lie eat you alive. Someone said, see I would've texted a selfie of you. and Justine back to her.
How do you know she wasn't with your best friend picking out. a ring for you. Lastly, someone said, well you no longer have. zero trust issues. I'd say this is a big trust issue since you know she lied. First things first. If you bought the ring. or put down a down payment on it, take it back. Try to get her to double down on her lie. Then confront her. Do you know if Justine has talked to her? - Okay. - I don't know if you need. to have her double down on the lie. Like if you have zero trust issues, just--. - These comments are not helping, send a picture back. of him or Justine.
Like ah, (beep) you. What? This is crazy. - I think some advice is very much on the play of like, oh, here's how you one up her. Here's how you win. And it's like if you love this person. to want it to work out 'cause--. - You can't win in your relationship. - If you need to be doing stuff like that. The relationship to me is over. - Yeah. - Like if you can't just go. and talk to your partner about something, then you're not really in a relationship. You're kind of enemies now. - Yeah. - I get that. I think where a lot of comments come from is a place.
of catharsis of like, you know we can (beep) get her. is if you do this. - Yes, exactly. - Like we don't know. if she's a bad person. 'Cause as someone else pitched, it's like, was she out buying a ring? Like we don't know. - Yeah, exactly. - Update, obviously, on this one. I decided to confront my girlfriend. I thought about using some of the lies people suggested, but they just wouldn't make sense. To say I ran into Justine somewhere. Well I told my girl I had to stay home. and do stuff around the house.
and that's why I couldn't go with her. to see my sister-in-law. To say Justine was helping me pick out jewelry, it doesn't make sense for her to come all the way. to our house to help me pick out a piece of jewelry. unless it was a serious piece. of jewelry, like an engagement ring. If I just wanted to get her a piece of jewelry as a gift, I'd ask her friends for suggestions. or ask them to send any pictures of jewelry she might like. It all happens over text. None of the excuses made sense. So I decided to be honest, I basically just said. that I knew we'd been thinking about marriage. and she probably knew a proposal was coming soon. So I invited Justine over. to help me find her the perfect ring.
and that so happened to be the day. that she said she was going to see her. So what's the deal? She immediately started grinning like an idiot. and prodding me about proposing and the ring. But then we got back on the topic of where she was. and she confessed what she was really doing. No, she wasn't cheating. and no, she wasn't picking out a ring for me. The amount of times that was commented was crazy. So some people are dog people. and some people are cat people. Well, I'm a snake person. I grew up with snakes my whole life, but I never felt like I was able to get one. because my girlfriend has always been uneasy about living.
with a snake, which I completely respected. Also, the process of buying. and raising a snake is very different from buying. and raising a dog or cat. It's quite complicated. So you can imagine my surprise when my girlfriend showed me. a picture of her holding the cutest Kenyan sand boa. I have ever seen. - Cute? - Needless to say, my girlfriend was going. to surprise me with a snake. We're picking her up next week. Let me know if you want a pet tax. She's so cute. I definitely did not expect this. and I feel bad for ruining the surprise, but oh well. Life is good. Sorry if this ending isn't what you guys wanted or expected.
Just a snake. Thanks for reading. - Just a snake. Wait. - Just a snake. - This ties it up in a very bizarre way. The guys are like, just a snake. She's the snake bro. - No, she's gotta be bad. - No. - Well that's-- - Whoa. - How crazy would it be if there was like another update? She went out and was cheating on me. and took a picture of a snake as a cover. - They went to a snake place together.
Well that's good. - I knew it, I was like. I don't think. Because Justine was like, huh? - Yeah. - If she was like, oh I'm sure she just messed up if she was covering for her. - Yeah. Yeah. - God. - I have such like internet brain rot that I'm like. kind of sad that it just ended great. I'm like, oh, they both really love each other. and she got him a snake and they're gonna get married. Like I wish there was some more drama. - That's when the show ends, when they finally.
get together, that's when the show ends. - Like this is awesome. I'm very happy. But part of me is like, oh well where's the rest of it? - It's definitely (beep) up that stories about bad people. are sometimes the ones. where you're like, whoa, okay good. These are good people. - They're gonna have a snake and a wedding. - Okay, awesome. Good people. - I wish there was a picture of the ring. - I want a picture of the sand boa. - Yeah. - Okay. Oh, the sand boa with the ring right here. - Put the ring on the sand boa. - Yeah. - Oh wow. All right.
- Good for them. - Awesome. - Good for them. - Yay. - All right, here's our next one. This comes from true off my chest. I've been telling people at work that I'm a Leo, I'm not. - Oh, okay, let me guess, 22 years old? - I've been telling people at work that I'm a Leo. I'm not in an attempt to create a long con prank to prove. to them that astrology is utter bullshit. But my plan is getting out of hand. and I don't think I can follow through on my big reveal.
This is awesome. - Wow. - There's a group of coworkers at my job. who are way into astrology. They're always talking about signs and compatibility. It didn't work out because he's a Gemini, et cetera. Sometimes they talk about people at work. and their personality traits based on their signs. When they ask me, I told them a fake birthday without even. knowing the sign associated with it. It turns out that based on this information I'm a Leo. They practically fell all over themselves telling me. how much sense that made. You have such a creative spirit or you're so generous. or my favorite, you're so vital.
What the (beep)? We're all pretty friendly with each other. So I thought it would be kind of funny to do this. and then reveal to them later that I'm not a Leo at all. to see how they reacted and covered for themselves. to justify their ongoing belief. in magic star influences. Well, unfortunately, one of my bosses seems to believe. that me being a Leo makes me uniquely suited. to work on various projects. and I've actually landed. on some good opportunities because of it. After presentation to clients, I was recently told. that my Leo spirit was really carrying the team. through such a difficult deadline.
Now I'm genuinely worried that someone is going. to figure out my real birthday. I work for a big company. that has my real birthday in the system. and there's a chance that some weird auto-generated. public email or post somewhere will congratulate. the October birthdays or something. I am basically caught up in a lie that's based on nonsense. to begin with and I'm really confused about what to do. I will probably never tell anyone at work this information. So I figured I'd tell a bunch. of strangers on the internet in the hopes. that I don't get found out. and have some kind of weird disciplinary action taken. Imagine my boss firing me for pretending to be a Leo.
That's such a Pisces thing to do. Kidding. - Ha. - Edit, I am absolutely loving people saying. that's such a Libra thing to do. Or it's such a Libra thing to get into situations like this. I said I was born in October but didn't specify the date. I'm not a Libra either. - Sagittarius. - Edit two, people. who are defending astrology by telling me. that it's much more complicated than just your birth date. and the proceeding to explain detailed nonsense. about the movement of the celestial bodies. That is not the convincing argument you think it is.
Lastly, edit number three. Kidding. I'm a Libra. So all those people saying that's so Scorpio, you're the ones who are wrong. Or is that what a Scorpio would say to throw off the trail? Who knows, according to Google, Libras gravitate toward intellectualism. So maybe this is all an elaborate thought experiment. that's so Libra of me or is pretending I'm a Libra. the Scorpio move? - What is happening? I'm exhausted. - I've been very open. We've talked about this. I'm very much a skeptic of astrology.
- He doesn't believe. - I don't actively believe in it. I somehow am so much more exhausted by this guy. than astrology because I'm just like, dude, stop. Like, but I will say what I don't like, I don't mind people like, you know, you're allowed. to have fun with anything or believe in things, but I don't love that the boss assigned him. to a project because of his birth date. That's--. - That's crazy. - (beep) up. That's actually just like, that is a form of discrimination or whatever.
- What is his job? - Yeah. I'm like, do you guys work at Birkenstock? - Patagonia? - What's up dude? - Patagonia. - Patagonia. - You're a Leo. - Hey the Pisces--. - You're the CEO now. - Not invited to this meeting. Sorry guys. - Scorpios only. in this meeting. - Yeah. Like what? - That's always where I draw the line. with astrology when it's like, oh, I won't, I won't be that person's friend. 'cause I've never experienced this in real life. But I've seen it on the internet where someone's like, oh, I would never go on a date with a Libra. or I would never talk associate with this.
I'm like, that's (beep) weird. - I know some people who are like that. - I think that's where I'm like, oh you're crazy. Like humans are way too complicated that, I do believe. what I've said before is I do believe your birthdate. might have influences. 'Cause like if you're born in the winter in a place like you. spent your first months, like inside more like the people. around you probably acted differently. based on the seasons you were born. Like I can buy into that, but I'm not gonna go around assuming anything.
about someone based anything. You know, it's like to say, oh, I don't trust people who are born in this date is as weird. as assuming anything about someone's background. That they can't control. - I do like some astrology, but not to the point of like, oh no or yes. But if someone tells me their sign, then I'm like, okay. I would say when I learned my sign, I was like, oh, this makes a lot of sense.
- I think you've explained it to me that, because a lot of people around here love it, but they like it as just kind of like, it's fun. - It's fun. - And you use it. as a tool for self-reflection. - For me. It's for me. - And that's great. - Yeah. Yeah. - I think that's fine. There's a million ways that you can use things. as introspection and self-reflection and that's awesome. - Like what sign are you? - I'm a Leo Cancer cusp. So I'm a Leo sun Sagittarius moon cancer rising. The thing is, I know nothing about it. I really don't, I know that stuff, but I love. how fun it is for other people.
'Cause I love when I tell people that, and they get so excited and I'm like, this is great. Like, this is such a fun thing. Look, I don't know anything about it. - Here's the thing. - We have to figure out. Shane's moon and sun. - Here's the, here's the thing, you know, like Beyonce, Zendaya and Kiki Palmer we're all Virgos. and like we're, you know, it's just like, I think it makes sense. - You are a Virgo. That does make sense, you should go, - We should leave here. - My joke is that as a Virgo, I don't believe in astrology.
'cause I don't feel like I meet many. Virgos who believe in astrology. - That makes sense, my mom. She doesn't. She's like, what are we talking about? - Are there Virgos out there. who adamantly believe in astrology? 'Cause I've not met any. - Yeah, I wanna know. - And I'm not one. - I'm an Aquarius and I feel like we. - That actual, okay, yeah. - We believe, there we go. But we're also like, don't bullshit me. - But this guy's also, I, this is not an am I the asshole post, but I'm like, come on dude. - Yeah. - You're also being.
a little much here. - What is he gonna do? Because there's definitely gonna be. an automated birthday thing. I feel like, I don't know, I feel like an easy kind of cop out is. to be like, oh, like I just like don't like love. people knowing my birthday. Like I just like don't, like I said that. because like I don't love people knowing my actual birthday. - Some people do that, that's fine. - I didn't think it was gonna grow to this level. - Comments, your boss gives you work opportunities. based on your star sign. What kind of an unprofessional workplace do you work at? Exactly my thought.
Someone said I work at HR and if a manager came to me. about disciplining someone for lying about their sign, I would turn it around to question why. they're using someone's sign. to determine projects or work assignments. Lastly, someone said if they do find out play dumb, like you never gave them the wrong birthday. in the first place, then when they get real butt hurt. about you being either a Libra or Scorpio, just tell them that Leo is your rising sign. They'll eat that shit up. - That's true. - There you go. - We could all be lying about that. - Update. It's been about a month and things are just getting.
weirder unfortunately. - Oh no. - But I tried. to do the right thing. - Oh no. - A couple weeks ago after I worked up the courage, I sat down with the original coworkers. that I gave the wrong birthday. to without my boss who is the real issue right now. I basically told them, hey, something really awkward is going on with our boss. And it kind of started because of a lie. I told you guys a couple months ago. Of course when you admit openly to lying, people get interested. and the people at my job are really drama hungry. So of course they immediately need. to know everything, paraphrasing here. But I told them, so remember when we were talking about.
our birthdays and signs? I kind of told you guys the wrong birthday. because I'm really uncomfortable with my sign. I don't think it fits me at all. This was a good thing to say apparently. because they immediately laughed so much. and when I told them my actual sign, they said that's such a blank thing to do. I told them that I always felt like a Leo. and I really liked a lot of the qualities. that I had read about them. So I gave a fake birthday so you would like me more. Which they seem to really understand. Guys, I think this was written by George Costanza.
(everyone laughing). So you told him you're a Leo. I told him I'm a Leo Jerry. I got a promotion because I'm a Leo. Scorpio, and then he like leaves. They were really nice about it. and felt really guilty that I was basically lying. to cover the lie but I'm already in too deep. So I told them, hey this is really awkward for me. because our boss is giving me more. opportunities because I'm a Leo. That is the biggest issue. with the story. - That's crazy. - Craziest shit, at this point,
one of them says basically, hey you know what? Maybe Leo is your rising sign. Again, exactly what some people in the comments. predicted and offered to do my chart for me, feeling super guilty about lying. to these nice people and I guess trying to connect. with them rather than mock them, I said, okay, sure. We work remote a lot of days. but we actually made plans to meet up at the office. and then stay after we finished work. so they could do the reading. Is it a reading? I literally don't know. It was super dumb, but I enjoyed it. We went into a conference room. and we mapped out the whole chart.
I had no (beep) idea what was going on, but I appreciated the attention. Towards the end of the session or whatever you call it. And mind you, this is like 8:00 PM by now and at my job. that means (beep) no one is in the building, especially with a lot of people still working remote. Who walks past the conference room? But my (beep) boss, the one. who has been fawning over my performance since thinking I. was a Leo, I guess she had come in to pick up some stuff. or had stayed late herself. Who knows? She comes in. and sees the charts in my notes I had taken about. my birth time and shit. And since she's really into astrology, gets all excited. and goes, oh, what's going on in here?
And my coworker, who is a (beep) G, just saving my ass explaining. that I had lied about my birthday, that I wasn't a Leo. but that I always felt like one, but doing it way better than I ever could. Essentially gaining so much sympathy for me. and making me seem like this tortured, misunderstood person. who felt like I was trapped in the wrong star sign. It was awesome and the vibes were good. So my boss and my coworker are going over my chart. and it turns out that I'm not a Leo rising. but I am a Gemini rising. And that got them talking about how that was so me. because I'm really social at work and I'm a multitasker.
and talkative and they basically forgot. that a couple months ago I was. so a Leo when I could sense the vibe was good. I even made a joke like, hey, I know. that you needed a Leo helping out on those projects, but I hope there's room for a Gemini. Haha. She ate it up. and was like, hey, I think a Gemini is compatible. with the team we have now. You obviously have already fit right in blah blah blah. So the work thing is no longer a concern, but here's where it gets kind of bad again. My boss asked to take the chart home, which I didn't really think anything of I guess.
because I certainly don't care about it or want it. And then a few days go by and then it's the weekend. and then I log onto a Zoom meeting on Monday. and she asked me to stay on after everyone was hung up. She goes, OP, I'm sorry if this is overstepping, but I know you're recently single. My daughter is close to your age, she's just finished college. and according to your charts you would be so compatible. So I would love it if you would ask her out sometime. She kept saying, no pressure, but if you know this woman, she obviously was pressuring me. and she's clearly too invested in her. employees' personal lives.
Honestly I was so dumbfounded when she brought it up. that I was basically speechless. So that was about a week ago. and since then she's had her daughter follow. and DM me on Instagram and email me. and start basically flirting with me. It's all pretty casual conversation. but she's clearly prepped her with things like, you would be perfect for him. I've kind of stalled getting back to her. because I honestly think this is really inappropriate. and the last thing I want is. to become more involved in my boss's life. and certainly not with someone she's related to. This all feels pretty inappropriate. But I also feel worried about hurting feelings.
So yeah, this is awkward. and I would argue it's perhaps worse than when you started. Hell. What the (beep) is this? - What is happening? I'm so scared right now. - Awesome. - Who is this boss? - Can I take that chart home? She was just there. Glasses on. Stars just like mapping the charts. That poor (beep) daughter. - Is there HR. at this company? - I want to know. what her daughter's sign is.
Is there HR? - What if he meets the daughter. and they're perfect together? - Well that's so gemini of him. (Shane laughs). - This is so awesome. - The boss is like-- - This is hilarious. - You're right. It's literally like a George. It's like a Seinfeld B story. - It's a modern day episode of Seinfeld. Oh my god. - So where do they work? Birkenstocks is a good call. Or like a yoga company. - Boxed water.
They gotta work somewhere like that. - Oh this is so (beep) up. This is a horror movie. - Awesome, awesome. - That's why you don't lie. 'cause you don't know what you're gonna get into. - Just don't not about your astrology sign. Oh my god. - No. This is so funny. Someone should write a script. This is such an awesome-- - It's really good. - I know. - Like this is so good. - Oh my god. - Someone who lies about their star sign. and then just, it keeps getting further. - Gets into a long marriage with a (beep) Pisces. and is like, oh no.
Goddamn. - Straight to streaming rom-com. - All the signs have good qualities. I just like what? I wanna know what her sign is, the daughter. Well guess I never will. - Nope. - No update? - No update. - They're not together? - No update. Nothing. - Do we think that he decided. to go on a date with the daughter? - Surely not. We're getting nods. - I honestly think this guy is gonna dig himself.
so deep into a hole. - I think he's gonna end up on a date. - This So how do you go on the date though. 'cause then you're locked. 'cause what if you don't break up? - The boss just there with her two tables down. - If you break up with her, what happens? Like this is Insane. - Stars aligned. - This episode of Redit Stories is brought to you by Factor. So I think this has a lot to do with people. who are doing Dungeons & Dragons, things like that. Trying to organize it is often a hassle. and there's a lot of drama. With people getting together trying to run a game. for weeks or months or years. DM has decided I am lying about my roles because I am a girl. and wants to roll for me the rest of the campaign. - Oh no, no, no, no, no, no. - I just decided that you are lying about your roles.
- I'm gonna roll for you. - Clearly you are being deceitful. Okay, lemme start by saying, I know it sounds like I'm in the wrong, that he must have a reason to think I am lying about my role. so I can succeed or something. But I truly have no idea why he thinks that I am, because I swear that I've never lied about a role before. So basically I am the only girl. who's 20 in my current Dungeons & Dragons campaign, but I don't really mind or feel uncomfortable about it since. all the guys I play with have been nothing. but welcoming and chill towards me.
They don't ever treat me any differently. and are a great group of guys. My only grievance is that the DM has made comments. since I started playing with them about. how every female he has played with. before always lies about their dice rolls. so they can impress all the guys. and look better/hotter in their eyes, which is a super weird thing to bring up in my opinion. I had just started and showed no signs. of lying about anything, so I was already kinda weirded out. that he felt the need to bring it up. or whatever, but whatever. I kind of just brushed it off and said I had played before.
and that I don't fake dice rolls. because that ruins the experience. and that the risk of the game. and my actions, which ruins the game. for me and everyone else. The DM seem to accept that and let it go at the time. However, I have noticed that at least once per session. he will make some comment somewhere along the lines of. how females just lie all the time. It's what they are biologically good at. and they all lie in games like this. to look sexy to the men there. No one at the table really responds when he. makes these comments. One of the guys tried once earlier on to that.
That was a sexist and off topic thing to bring up, but the DM got mad at being cut off from sharing his. personal life experience and knowledge. So no one has spoken up about about it since. This last session was probably the most risky. and dangerous situation the party has been in. since the start of the campaign. and there were a few times where I had. to roll and lives were on the line if I failed. Somehow I managed to get at least the bare minimum. I needed to succeed, needed a 15 or higher in most cases. Since I usually had advantages, everyone else was having similar luck though,
so I was just hyped that we were rolling lucky that night. I did also have plenty of horrible roles. Got two nat ones in a row at one point LOL, two, so I wasn't, it wasn't as if I was only rolling successes. the whole session, but the DM seemed to be getting frustrated more. and more with each successful role I announced. He made a comment. that I thought at the time was a joke. He chuckled and said it was almost like I was faking it. to win with how good my luck was. I had been rolling in front of me. where everyone could see so nothing was hidden.
I didn't think that was any concern that I was cheating, so I just laughed and said that, yeah, my luck was wild tonight. Then at the end of the session, the DM said I had one more. save role to get us out of there avoiding another fight. that would probably end badly for us. I needed a Nat 20 or I would fail. One of my party members assisted and so I had advantage, but the odds of success were still low. I rolled both dice and by some miracle I did it. I rolled a Nat 20 on both dice. It was glorious and everyone was super hyped. The DM just looked mad though. and we all joked that he wanted us to fail.
so he could show off some more characters he made. and do more of the fun combat stuff. He kind of chuckled and said it was something like that. The session then ended calmly with us getting back. to our keep and getting set up to rest. Then we called it a night. Everyone packed up and we went our separate ways. Assuming that was the end of the night. I got a message two hours later from the DM. and he was telling me he knows I cheated. and lied about my dice rolls. to look better in front of the guys. He said he was nice enough to not call me out there. and embarrass me in front of everyone like he should have,
but that he could no longer trust me. He demanded that I give him my dice next session. and that from here on out he will be rolling. behind his DM screen for me, since I am proving. to be just like every other lying female. and ruining the game for all the honest. guys who are playing with me. I was stunned, I didn't know what to say, so I just told him I had never lied that I was sharing dice. with one of the guys so they aren't some weighted set. or something and that all my roles were in the open. where everyone could see that I could understand. He may have had bad experiences in the past with players, but I had done nothing wrong. and would not be letting him roll. for my character the rest of the campaign.
He has yet to respond, but I'm still so out of touch. and insulted that he thought I was cheating or lying. I really like the group I play with. and the campaign story is super interesting, so I don't think I'll be quitting, but I certainly am not gonna just sit by. and not roll ever again. and I don't know what to do in this situation. Edit, for those saying he has a crush on me. Yeah, he asked me out when I was a freshman in high school. and he was a senior. We were both in the same clubs. and he seemed nice enough to give a chance. to him, so I said yes.
We only dated for about a month or two. before he got super possessive. and controlling and I broke it off. He was still super bitter, so I cut him off entirely. Up until about two years ago, we only reconnected. because we live in a small town. and so we share most of the same friends. He has asked me out three times since then. and I have turned him down each time. The last attempt he made at asking me out, I very bluntly told him that he, that if he ever asked me out again, I would cut him outta my life permanently. Well, that's huge info. - Oh, well there we go. - Yeah. This guy's a massive asshole.
- This makes me so (beep) angry. - I'm upset at the other guys in this group. to tolerate comments of that magnitude is crazy. - Like they're not gonna speak up at all. when he says all women (beep) lie. - Especially being like, they're being like, yeah, all females lie. It's like, bro, you're being a massive incel right now. - Really, you're a DM. You're not a (beep) god. - Also, from what we've played and everything. and what I've watched, the whole point is to have a good time. - Yeah. - You're not filming a show,
you're not like, it's just for fun. You're hanging out. If everybody's having a good time, that means you're doing a good job as a DM. And then he's pissed and he is gonna make him. punished for like having fun. - That's the skill of being a DM is that making it. so fun for everyone. There's so many good DMs out there. that aren't (beep) sexist, but clearly this is. because he is hurt I by her, which is psychotic. that he's making it. - I unfortunately imagine this is relatively common.
just out there with people playing D&D. Like I'm sure in the comments if you play D&D like, you know, I'm just sure there's a lot. of controlling shitty DMs out there, especially when you're just playing for fun. It's just like personal weird biases. and weird shit comes up. - It makes me so sad that there are people like that. that are just out there. And that's the funny part about D&D is like all. the times in the past that I've played it, like you don't get like sad. or upset when you don't hit a roll. It's like, that's funny sometimes. Yeah, maybe that one like shit happens.
Like that's the game and it's fun no matter what, whether you're rolling good or not. - You're literally just telling a story together. just have a good time. - She needs to just not play with this dude. - I wish they would all just cut this dude out, but really these friends, friends of his need. to tell him to stop. - They're not doing anything. and he's so manipulative how he texts her later. to try to get in more and be like, you know, I just, I really protected you back there when you were lying. and being a woman.
Like what? - If there's a guy that only refers to women as females, I think that he should be put in a cell. - Females. That's so true. - This prick sounds very incelly. Don't appease him. Call it out and share it with the group. He wants power over you and by allowing it. or minimizing it, he will only get worse. He can either realize he's out of order. and sort his shit out, apologize and move forward. or he doesn't and you get a new DM or leave. He is going to lie about your roles. If he makes them behind the screen, don't you dare agree.
to this insane idea. or you'll have a miserable time from now on. Remember, no D&D is better than bad D&D. Also, I wouldn't hesitate for a moment. and I would screenshot his accusation. and send them to the other players. Lastly, someone said he doesn't have a problem. with other players cheating. or he doesn't have a problem with players cheating. He has a problem with women. and you most definitely should not give in. under any circumstances. Dice rolling is how the player interacts. and invests in the game outcome. Taking that away from the player is just about the stupidest. thing a DM could probably do in a game mechanically.
Update. - Oh yes. - We condensed it for time, but we got all the important parts in there. But it's still big, still big. We condensed it 'cause this is still a big update. - Let's go. Oh my god. - I realized. I didn't put some background info. trying to stay anonymous and all, but I have known DM. and two of the guys since freshman year. of high school when they were both seniors. and DM had some sometimes been a nice guy, but he was never this much like an incel/neckbeard, so this behavior was kind of surprising to us, which is why I think they only spoke up once.
and were kind of confused about it after that. But anyways, onto the actual update on what happened, how it all went down yesterday was not at all. what I expected to happen to be honest. I had shown all the other guys I played with the messages. that the DM had sent me. I was clear with them that this was not acceptable. and that either they supported me. and got the DM to straighten his act up or I was leaving. I also made it clear that I had nothing against them, that I really liked gaming with them. and would be happy to continue playing with them. with a different DM if I had to leave. and that we would still be friends outside the game.
and that if I had to leave, I would still be friends with them. All of them were appalled at how he had been acting. and the messages seemed to be the final straw. that broke the camel's back. After showing them all the messages, they said they had. to talk about some stuff and would get back to me. before the next session, but most were clear. that they were on my side in this manner. One of the guys got back to me the day before the session. and said that they were all behind me 100%. and that they all had been calling the DM out. the past two weeks since the last session. I guess they were demanding he shape up. and explain where this mindset came from. and why he was acting like such an ass.
Well, I decided that since I had support. from the rest of the group, I would go back. for this session, but if he made a single comment, I was leaving then. and there just walking out and being done with it all. When I got to the place. where we were all meeting the DM asked us to sit down. and he was sounding really uncomfortable. and he wouldn't look anyone in the eye. He said he wanted to talk to us, but we had to sit down first. Well, he went on to tell us about his past three girlfriends. that one had dated him for two months. before saying she was a lesbian. and leaving that the second one cheated on him.
with someone from one of his classes. and that the third one, which he says was the breaking point. for him, asked to join a game he was DMing. for at his college. and ended up hitting it off with one. of the guys there and they broke up. I was honest with him that I was sorry he had been through. that and I did empathize with how he was feeling. and how he was hurt, but that none of it was an excuse for. how he had been treating me or how he had been speaking. That his behavior was still and incredibly cruel and hurtful. and it made me feel unsafe to be around him anymore. The other guys at the group backed me up saying that. as shitty as his situation was, it did not excuse.
or forgive the way he had been acting, they were clearly behind me, which I'll admit was a huge relief. The DM asked what he had to do to get us to stay. and one of the guys said the main issue would be earning my. trust back and that it was up to me to decide what. that meant and that aside from that, the guys had lost trust in DM. and his ability to be fair to all players at the table. and that he would also have to earn the trust back. as well as their respect for him as a friend. The DM told me that he had known he was wrong to act.
and speak like that, and that he had been angry and spiteful. because of his past experiences and because he was hurt. when I turned him down each time he asked me out. between his past relationships. and after his last girlfriend broke up with him, he said he was taking his anger out on me and venting. because it was easy to blame me for it. I was not prepared for this. We didn't end up having a session that night. DM said he would leave for now. and let me think of if slash how he would, he could gain all our trust back so the DM left. and the other guys and I honestly. didn't know what to do about it. I'm considering telling him.
that therapy is a good first step for gaining my trust back. He has always had some really bad anger issues. and some other personal things. that I believe therapy could really help with, help him work. through and with all this new stuff. My belief that he could use a good. therapist is even stronger now. Sorry it isn't the explosive yelling match ending with one. of us storming out of the room. in a dramatic climax of the evening. Like some of you in the comments were saying you wanted. to hear about LOL, I kind of expected to be giving. that update, but here we are. I'll keep you all updated still. We are still planning.
to meet up at the scheduled time in two weeks when the next. session would be, so the guys. and I have two weeks now to think and figure things out. - Whoa. Okay. Pretty mature. - It's like, I don't know, I respect that he apologized. and owned up to it, but still like treating someone. that shittily for that long when, I don't know, just basically taking out your feelings on them. Like I don't think that she should remain friends with him. I feel like that's like a,
Maybe it's like a hey, if you want. to get coffee in a couple years, like, or. whenever you feel like you're better. and reach out, like maybe, but it's just, it's so toxic. - It's like the work has to begin now. and it's like-- - For what? - I mean, he has to start working on himself. and it's just gonna, it's not like, oh, it's gonna change overnight. Like, because I don't even like where it started. - Yeah. - It started. with him being like, here's how all these girls. have wronged me, and it's like,
you are just starting your introspection journey. - Yeah. - I don't know. I think it's just gonna be, that room is gonna be loaded forever, you know? It's just, it's the tension. and stuff is not gonna, they're not gonna meet up in two weeks. and it's gonna be like, great, we can now play. You're playing D&D. That's a game that's very personal. You're vulnerable. - For hours. - Yeah man, if it was like, oh, we're in a soccer league, it's like, all right. Or like a softball league. It's like, I guess you can do that,
but like D&D's very intimate and personal. - Every time she rolls her dice now everyone's gonna. be like, what's he gonna say? - I agree with you of just, I know they live in a small town and stuff, but it's like this is a lot, this guy's a lot. - He showed up with a three girlfriends story. to be like, see, this is why I did that. And you're like, oh, so you didn't realize why all those. three girlfriends left you 'cause you have control issues. - There's also the element that she's not addressing,
which I know they only dated for a month. for like years before, but it's like, to him, she is his ex, you know? It's like that's loaded to play D&D with your ex. as a DM is like, a guy like that. I'm sure there's some people who would be fine. - Do we think a month of dating is an ex? - I'm saying to him. - No, I know. I'm asking now--. - With how much investment he has. I wouldn't necessarily say it depends on. if you're just, if you're a freshman in high school.
and you date for a month, I don't really say that's an ex. - Even now. - It depends. It depends. - I don't think so. - Especially after like four or five years. Like especially if you've been, if you've talked after, I don't think it is, but to him, the amount of weight that he's put to it. - Yeah. - She is his ex. - Yeah. - Because he is so obsessed. He's like obsessed with her. 'cause he's asked her out three times since then. - Yeah, and it's definitely like, I can see how. it's like a comfort thing for her where it's like,
it's just easier if she doesn't like cut him off. Like if she is like, I don't have to like, you know, deal with this drama of like my other. friends and like cutting him off. But like, yeah, there just has come a point where it's like, this person is not adding any value to your life. and is in some ways just like actively taking. value away and it's just--. - It sucks. - It does suck. - She just wants to play (beep) D&D. Why did this dude have to make it so complicated? - I know. - She said, no, now let her play D&D and roll her goddam dice.
- Why these females have to be lying so much. - You lied to me, I'm rolling your dice from now on. Bitch. - Yeah. Sad, he's 24. It's like, you're not a teenager. - No. - You gotta get, you gotta you gotta get over this shit. Ugh. - D&D, what a crazy world. - Here is our last story comes from relationship advice. 24-year-old woman writing in, my boyfriend who's 27 has.
disappeared every weekend for the past three years. and I just found out he's been lying. to me about where he goes. - Uh-oh, every weekend? - Every weekend for three--. - Three years? - Three years? - You didn't wanna check on that? All right. - I just didn't get around to it. - Yeah. - My boyfriend. and I have been together for three years. We don't live together but are close enough. to spend a lot of time together. However, it is very rare for us. to spend a whole day together, when we have, it's been a weekday where our schedules have just happened.
to line up, like no work and no class. We have never spent a day on the weekend together. for three years. Damn. He works as a research assistant while getting his PhD. every single weekend for the three years. we've been together, he insists he has work. I realized how stupid I've been now, but foolishly I trusted him. I trusted that he had work every single weekend. for three years. That was until today, I've been studying for finals. and it's the toughest it's ever been. So I was craving some time with him, just a day. where we could kick back and relax with each other.
Of course, he says he can't because he is working. and I shut up about it. So today I'm getting antsy anyway. and hoping we could at least spend the evening together. I end up texting him, asking when he thinks he'll be back. and if we can spend the night together. I've done this plenty of times before. and he always responds fairly quickly. This time I'm waiting for a while. After two hours, I decided to text a work friend. of his who's also a research assistant with him. Wouldn't you know it, it turns out they. don't have work today. In fact, he informs me in that same text. that they rarely ever have work on weekends, rarely, ever.
So now I'm sitting here wondering. what the (beep) is going on. I have no idea how to confront him about this. I mean, this has been going on for three years. If he's been cheating on me, he basically has a second family at this point, but obviously that's where my mind goes. and I have no clue what else it could possibly be. Like, is there any possible explanation. for this besides cheating? How in the world do I confront him about something he's been. doing for three years. Since he's doing whatever it is tomorrow, do I just drive over to his place in the morning. and wait and then follow him? Has anyone had anything like this happen to them before?
- You're gonna go to that extreme rather than text him. be like, what's up bud? - I think that's an immediate deal breaker. Even if he's not cheating. Even if it's just anything, I'm just like, okay, you can lie for that long so casually. - Yeah. - It's just done. It's just done. - I'm very curious. what's going on, but why is the first thought follow him? Come on. - So I'm gonna stalk him. What's like the funniest thing that it could be? Like, imagine he's just really like addicted to video games.
He just wants to play video games uninterrupted. for two days every week. - That could be, or taking care of an old relative. - But you just say that. - I know. - Like that's such an endearing thing. Just to tell someone. - What's he doing. on the weekends, D&D? - Yeah. But also it's just like, that's why I'm like anything you're lying about. for three years, I just don't think there's a good outcome. - No. - Even if it's positive, it's like you lied to me for three years about it. - For three years. - I've said that before about cheating where I'm like, it the cheating isn't even to me,
the worst part, it's the lying. - Yeah. - That I'm like, that's the deal breaker. That's the ultimate deal breaker. 'cause I'm just like, that's the ultimate disrespect. - Breaking trust. - This is immediate just over. - Comments here. I would just ask him first, hey, I texted your work friend while I was waiting for you. to reply and he said, you never work weekends, even if he's not cheating, he's lying. Don't stalk him, don't play games. OP said, but what's stopping him from just lying again? Like even if I confront him, he could just insist. that he's working or come up with an excuse. The only proof I have is the text from his coworker.
I feel like that might not be enough. to get him to tell me the truth. I don't know. This is exactly why lying breaks relationships, because now you can't trust anything he says. - It's like, how will I get him to tell me the truth? It's like, oh, well, if you have to go to that length, you shouldn't be in a relationship. - Just leave it. - Also, yeah, like you said, like at this point you don't even need the truth. You just know that he's been lying for three years. - And she probably, she probably knows it's gonna be over, but she just needs that truth for closure. - Well, I wouldn't need the truth. - I need it. - Do you need it? - I personally need it. - I don't know, I think we can wrap it up. - What? - I'm kidding.
- Someone else said simply text him. I found out I'm done. and see what he confesses to thinking, you know, already. I don't mind that, I don't mind that. I don't mind that. I'll accept that. Someone said, do you spend any holidays together? Celebrate your birthdays together. Met his friends, met his parents, met any other family. Do you give each other gifts? Have you had any discussions about. living together or any future? So many questions that the answers could give a better. understanding of your relationship. They've never spent a weekend together for three years.
I don't know how you manage a relationship like that. - Unless it's like long distance, which it's not. It also, three years and so you're not gonna question him? - Even the long distance for three years. and you never spent a weekend together. is crazy to me. - Yeah, yeah. I agree. - I'm just like, that's crazy to me. - I agree. I get not being able to spend like, I haven't spent a weekend with my husband in a long time. because of like bartending stuff, but that's different. - But you still see him on the weekend. - Yeah. Yeah.
I still see him on the weekends and everything. That's totally different, I know where he is. - But like a long time is like, okay, if you go a couple to a few months where it's, but it's like understood why, and you're talking about it like you're still. able to talk on weekends. It's like just because you are working. doesn't mean you can't talk. or like hang out on at night or something. - You're not working 48 hours straight. - This is a lot. - This makes me think that she never hangs out. with his friends because if she hung out. with his friends for one second--. - I think unfortunately it reads as,
this is my theory. - Yeah. - It reads to me. like she's the other woman. and like, 'cause it's just like he sees her like. once a or twice a week maybe for three years. and there's, he's lying. It's just like, I kind of agree. She's like, by this point he might have a whole nother. family and I'm like, that seems likely. Or 'cause Reddit goes all over the place. It could be something crazy, but it's like it's reading to me like that. - Is it the video games?
- No. - He's highly ranked on Valorant. - He's top 100 Radiant. (Shane laughing). - Okay. Update. - Oh my god. - Here we go. When I logged off, things seemed pretty. split on what I should do. Most people just decided to call him a cheater. or say that I'm the side chick. Frankly, I wasn't sure I could wait another day. to confront him, so I confronted him the night of that post. No games or stalking or anything. Anyway, I had texted him telling him. to come over when his work was done and he did. I waited about five minutes if that for him to settle in.
before telling him that we needed. to talk about something important. He responded immediately with uh-oh, which was a bit demeaning, but that sarcastic response honestly. matches his personality. I told him everything that happened, how hurt I was, how I didn't feel like I could trust him about anything. considering he's been doing this for three years. and then asked if he had anything to say. He told me he wasn't cheating on me or anything like that. He was just embarrassed about what he had been doing. I asked him what he could possibly be so embarrassed about. as to hide it and lie to me about it for three years.
He takes like a minute. to compose himself and then mutters something. He clearly feels guilty, but I obviously don't hear it, so I ask him what he said. because I didn't hear. He tells me that he has volunteered at a homeless shelter. every weekend since coming here for his PhD. - Oh, he's lying. - I'm just so embarrassed. - Embarrassed that I've been helping the homeless. - I'm helping the homeless. - What did I say? - Embarrassing. - Oh, sorry. - Volunteering at a homeless shelter.
I swear to you, whatever emotions are coming across here. were multiplied 10 times in the moment. I could not comprehend what he was saying, like he was embarrassed. for volunteering at a homeless shelter. It still doesn't make any sense. So I asked him what he meant. and he repeated that he volunteers at a homeless shelter. for six hours on Saturday. and six hours on Sunday every weekend. Of course, I asked him why he would be embarrassed about. that and he asked if we can talk about this more tomorrow, Sunday, and he can instead show me that he isn't lying. by taking me to volunteer.
I don't know what I was really thinking. I think my mind was just blank. So I agreed and asked him to leave. He apologized for the whole thing and left. and then sent a text that he'd pick me up in the morning. so he can prove to me that he's not lying. Of course, I tossed and turned all night, but Sunday came anyway and he wasn't lying. He takes me to a homeless shelter/soup kitchen. and we make food clean. and packed daily necessities for six hours. It clearly isn't the place to have the conversation. So I spend most of my time doing the work. and chatting with other people and they were really nice.
Of course, the whole thing was still weighing. on my mind the entire time. So I started asking them about my boyfriend. and they confirmed that he's been working there. as long as they remember and is there every weekend. He's been there longer than most of them it seems. Finally, our volunteering ends and we head back to his car. and I try to start the conversation, but he shuts me down. and asks me to wait until we get back to his place. I say, fine, maybe I'm being a doormat here, but I was just so confused and lost. and we head to his apartment. Once there, the talking begins, he asks if I believe.
that he's telling the truth about working. at the homeless shelter every weekend, and I say that I do since I confirmed it with a lot. of people while there, but I also said that I don't understand the lying, especially for as long as he did. He apologizes again. and asks if I really want to know why he kept it a secret. I say, of course, duh. He sighs, and then tells me. that he doesn't like people knowing. that he likes helping people. Obviously, I'm going, what the (beep)? Because this is so weird, and I ask him to explain. He tells me that when he was undergrad, when he was an undergrad student, he would always try. to help his class behind the scenes.
by discussing problems they had or negotiating for curves. or extensions on their assignments. even when he didn't personally need it. He said he enjoyed doing it and kept doing it. as a masters student, but then started to do so. before/after classes publicly. Apparently most of his classmates were still happy with him, but a few basically hated him for it. because he was babying them or something. So he went back to doing things behind the scenes. and no longer tries to associate with any. of the things he does to help others. Hopefully, I'm not the only one who finds this.
so dang weird, like the homeless shelter stuff. and assisting your classmates aren't remotely the same, I say as such and he tells me it does the same thing. It helps people so he doesn't like people to know about it. because they might misinterpret his intent. and think he's masquerading as a good person. Then he assures me that he's not a good person at all, but he still wants to do what he can for people, so this is what he does. What the (beep)? So I ask if he really thinks, I would get mad. that he's helping homeless people in his free time.
He tells me he wasn't sure at first, especially since I wanted to spend weekends together. when we were first going out, duh. Every couple does. So he just lied to hide it at first, but he knows I wouldn't do that now, but kept the lie going. because he thought it would be too weird to suddenly say. that he's volunteering at a homeless shelter. I feel like I've come to the conclusion. that he's just really, really weird. His way of thinking has always been odd, but this is in particular just so weird. Like he seems to understand the situation. and where I'm coming from, but didn't think to tell me the truth on his own.
We started going in circles and I ended the conversation. and had him drive me home in silence. Since then, he sent a number of texts. and has tried to call me a few times. I didn't pick up on Monday or Tuesday. because I felt like I needed time to think, but I finally picked up today. and we had a talk in which we both. reiterated what he had said. I know a lot of people, literally all. of them at this time were telling me to break up with him, but I'm still thinking things through. I'm going to try and get him to hang out this weekend. and make my decision after that I think some more,
this whole thing has been so weird. I'm sorry that I've repeated that so much, but my brain is still rather scrambled. I don't think there will be any more updates to this. because we either stay together or break up, but if there are, they won't be posted here. - What? - What? - Okay. - What? - What? It's like a knight in shining armor. Like I'm not a good person. Oh boy, I saved thousands. - I've said it before and I do believe like, doing good things in private and not telling one.
is like an important thing to do. - Yeah, it's good. - But, a relationship is about trust. and not having secrets of a magnitude. and even if you're doing something good. and it's not only harmless, it's a good thing. If you're not telling your partner, that's still deceit. It's still a secret. It's still 'cause what you're communicating. to her in those three years is, I don't trust you. and I don't trust how you're gonna react to this.
It's like you are gonna keep it a secret forever. Like, I don't know. - It's really great what he's doing. - It's great, it's the best thing. - It's so great, but it's also like. your person also needs you and you are lying to them. and they wanna spend time with you. - It's very sad. 'cause I feel like if I was her, I'd be like, okay, I love you and also I would've volunteered. with you all these years. For three years we could have been doing this together. Imagine where their relationship would be at this point.
Like, I don't know, it's crazy to say, but a part of me thinks this is a huge deal breaker. - Yeah. - Because I'm like, yeah, man, like you're a hero. That's awesome. You're lying and like--. - But you lied and you don't wanna spend. It makes me feel like he doesn't wanna spend time with her. or he doesn't wanna loop her into this other part. of his life, but it's, I don't know, like you can have free time or independence, but you can't (beep) lie about it forever. - Not to her, I understand what he's saying.
Like, okay, with other people, they resented him for it. Okay, but this is supposed to be the person. that you trust won't resent you for things like that. - Yeah. It's so weird. Like if I'm him and I feel that way, I wanna tell her as soon as possible. because if she is someone who's gonna react in a weird way, which why would she, that's insane. But if she did react and be like, oh, why do you do that? Like, you're, you know, putting on a front or whatever, then I wouldn't wanna be with her. And so it's like, why wouldn't we.
wanna figure that out early? - That's one of those things and if it had been like, oh, after dating for like a few months, it was like, here's this thing I do. That's fine. But you're in a relationship. You are in a committed relationship. - Yep. - Three years. - And she went there, how amazing of her, she was like, well, let me see what it's like. And she was like, wow, this is so cool. But also if I was her, I would--. - It's such a hard adjustment. - I'd be so flabbergasted. - It's such a hard adjustment, I don't know. 'Cause once again, the problem with lying.
is even though he lied, it was all fine. He wasn't cheating. You're now like, well he's so capable. of holding a secret for three years. - Yeah. - If he does decide to cheat, he'll be damn good at it. - Yeah. - Yeah. - Like that's what's tough is trust is hard. to build back, man. - Yeah. - Well she said. there wouldn't be another update, but there is. - Oh my god, gift. - Huge, huge. - Huge. - Okay. It's another doozy.
So I asked him to come over so we could talk and he did. I then asked him some questions people had on here. that I had written down, volunteering for six hours, but still not having time for me. He said he would get there a little early and leave late, but would then spend the remaining hours running errands. and actually working on PhD/assistant stuff. I asked if he could give me details. He gave me some details about academic. articles that I don't remember. I asked why he couldn't spend more weekend evenings. with me if that was the case. He said that he was really busy with work. and that I would distract him. Ouch.
Out of all the things said, I think this is the one. that bothers me the most. I asked if the volunteering was court ordered. He laughed at that and was clearly confused by the question, but answered that given the special population he works. with doing his PhD, he doubts he'd be able to work. with them if he had a record that required so many hours. I asked if he was ever going to tell. me about the volunteering. He initially says he doesn't know. Then replies that he probably wouldn't have. He apologized for lying, but then said that whether he was working. or volunteering doesn't make a difference. to how much time he spent with me.
Obviously I pushed back on this and he got defensive. and we had an argument that basically reiterated. how I felt like I couldn't trust him. because he was lying about this while he kept apologizing. for the lying, making me feel that way, but that it wouldn't have changed. how we spend time together. Ultimately, I asked him to explain. to me again why he hid it in the first place. Like he said previously, he used to talk to professors. during undergrad about extensions and questions. others had behind closed doors. and then make sure those things were stated. to the rest of the class.
He did the same things. He did the same thing in his master's program. This is where I got lost before. One of his professors was a hardass. and some of his classmates were scared to talk. to him about their grades, so he thought he could show them. that he was willing to discuss grades. and he made a joke about his own grade in class. The professor didn't find it funny. and went on a tirade about respect and showing him up. and apparently the class ended shortly thereafter. because it was so tense. He said that some of the other students felt like they. needed to cut ties with him. to show the professor they weren't in on the joke.
and that a few of them made a show of hating him. from that point forward, hearing it more in depth at least makes this make. a little more sense to me. I stated again that helping homeless. and helping classmates seems like an entirely different. thing altogether. He said that they felt like the same to him, but that I was probably right and he was wrong. I asked him why he said he's a bad person. He replied asking if he said that and I said, yes. He said that he didn't want the volunteering. to make him seem like a good person because he's not. I asked what he meant and he replied that I know him. I said, I'm not sure I do.
He said that I know what he means. I said, I don't, you do et cetera in circles. Personally, I think he has low self-esteem, but this is a weird way to express it. and I'm not sure what else it could be. I told him I wasn't sure I wanted. to continue the relationship because of the lying. He seemed hurt, but then just said, okay, and that it's my decision. I told him that he should at least get therapy. for the classmate thing. because it's clearly affected him negatively. He replied that he probably should, but he won't. After that, I gave him an ultimatum, either spend more time.
with me on weekends and go to therapy or we break up. I told him to think about it and that he has until Saturday. He said he would and he went on his way. - He's like, thought about it, no. - Yeah, I'm like, cool. You're volunteering. That is a really awesome action to be doing. for such a long period of time. That's incredible and honorable and I respect that. You're being so disrespectful to your partner. As a partner, you're doing a dogshit job.
Like completely separate thing. and you're failing at it so miserably. In this conversation, he just doesn't feel she deserves any sort. of information or truth. - Yeah. - It would just be over. I just think, and I think it seems like she's done with it. as much as what a giving act. that he's doing by volunteering. He seems very self-absorbed when it comes to her, where it's just like he's so focused on his. own life and his own journey. He does not care what she thinks, how she feels.
or her experience. He's just like, this is what I'm doing, and it's like, dude, just be single. - He doesn't wanna spend time with her. To me, it's clear. It's like, he volunteers all day and then goes. and works on his research after. Like to me, he's avoiding her. - And just saying, I won't go to therapy. - I probably would've never told you the truth. and I won't go to therapy. - That's a deal breaker. - Yeah. - If you're in a relationship with someone. and you say, hey, I think you should go to therapy, and they go, I will not go to therapy.
I'm telling you, that's a huge red flag. - Yeah. - Me personally, I don't need therapy, but I definitely agree. - Oh my god. - There's another update. - Oh my God. - She said, I'm not gonna update. - Last update. - No more after this. I swear. - He asked me to compromise. He would take a day off from volunteering if I volunteered. with him the other day and he wouldn't. have to go to therapy. I said I needed to think about it.
I told him later that night that I'd accept the compromise. if he was willing to go to one therapy session. On Sunday morning, he told me. that he wouldn't be willing to go. to therapy and asked that we go out to dinner. We went to a local diner. and basically talked about ending things. He apologized for ending things this way. and said that he knew he wasn't exactly being reasonable, but he is doing what he feels like he needs to do. I basically said, that's up to him. We wished each other the best. He gave me a parting hug and I went on my way. So yeah. Three years of commitment for this, kind of sucks. Have a good day.
- That's unreal. - Have a good day. What? - Yeah. - God. Okay. Yeah. - Sad. - I don't understand how he bases this whole thing, like this whole lie on the idea that like, I don't want it. to seem like I'm trying to be a good person, but then he's completely unwilling. to try and work on himself. Like it's obvious that he doesn't. think that he's a bad person. He thinks that he is a good person doing good things. And doesn't have anything to work on.
- Yes. - It almost, it becomes unimportant. of whether you're a good or bad person. It's just like, hey, you need to communicate. You need to talk. You need to be honest. I think unfortunately, and I think she made the absolute right move by getting out. of this, even though he's the one. who it sounds like he ended it. because I feel like there's just an infinite amount. of bullshit that's gonna be dug up. - Yeah. - It's just like this, the best word she used. to describe him was honestly, I'm like, yeah, he's weird.
- Yeah. - He's being really weird. - He's being really, really weird. - It's like, dude, you're not doing anything rational. You're not being honest. You're not communicating, you're not being respectful. You're being weird as hell. - Also to like refuse that you'll never go to therapy. - That's such a crazy thing to say. - Okay. - Yeah. If you're begging your partner to go. to one therapy session, you need to be ending it. - Yeah, exactly. - Please! - Please, just go to one therapy session. No, just walk away. - Oh. - Damn. - Damn liars. Lying sucks. - Freaking liars.
