Smriti Mandhana On Controlling Emotions, Handling Pressure & Failures | FO561 Raj Shamani
You've not been able to soak in the. environment. >> Yeah. Yeah. 2017 World Cup final. I was. 8 19 year old. I never knew what to do. I just went to B. Saw that first time. women's cricket had 20 odd,000 people. and that's my first match at Lords. I. went and the third ball is like zero out. till I realized what's happening. I was. already out. >> You were not focused on the batting. You. were focused on like. >> I wouldn't say I was focused that it's. just that even if you're not focusing. it, I feel it's more than avoiding it. you should just embrace it. At that time.
I was avoiding it. >> Today's guest Summiti Mandana, one of. the biggest stars in Indian cricket. She. opens up about the sacrifices behind. success, bouncing back from failure, handling expectations and constantly. pushing herself to become better. >> Okay, take me on the day of final match. of the World Cup. You have to walk me. through that day. Like. >> morning I wake up for breakfast as. usual. Everyone's families were there. Indian cricket family went back did my. mobility routine ground mal it's a.
walking distance that we stayed at but I. like 10 minutes drive to the stadium so. for DIY patel matches I used to start. listening to songs on airports in room. only. >> so that song I s Indian entry song tuan. was my go-to song for a very long time. so first I enter I like kind of see and. I just try and soak it in and be. comfortable around it because once. you're comfortable you just feel like. okay it's your space I have that routine. touch the down. Go sideways twice, sideways this twice, three back flips,
look at the sun just near the 23 ys. Like just do that. >> You have a 30inut rule. >> Yeah, it's a 30-minut rule. Like I. wouldn't dwell on anything in life, not. only cricket. Anything in life 30 40. minutes. >> I think I've got up done. >> Let me name like top emotion. Can you. tell me what you feel about them? Like. what do you think about anger? If you get angry, you could talk. something which would hurt the other. person a lot. So rather than hurting. that person, just be quiet. >> How do you feel about sad as an emotion?
>> For me, I feel I just go quiet for a. very long time. I hate sympathy. Any. sort of sympathy. I'm fine. Even if I've got I've had a. bad World Cup. Don't look at me as I. don't like to portray myself. I'm. strong. >> When was the last time you cried? >> Good question. I have a small favor to ask you. I need. you to subscribe to our channel. >> Okay. So let let me show you two. pictures and you tell me what has. changed. hairstyle or. hairstyle or. there you go. >> Oh, so these are two different eras of. smiti. Okay, this is you when you. started or probably little after that. and then this is you right now. Tell me. just the differences and I'll write. down. >> Oh, >> what are the differences.
between. the KDU versus who you are right now? Interesting. I'm thinking loved batting. Loved batting. >> Don't tell me the similarities. We. covered that. >> Maybe I was very organized and. disciplined. This person is not that. organized and disciplined. >> I feel. >> I you know somehow I prefer my younger. self more than my self.
>> Why would you say so? I feel I was a lot. like a confident extra confident kid. I. had like I'll show you like you know I. was a very. like I would fight with anyone and fight. with anyone and I would like show the. world like what it is kind of a person I. was like fight with guys get my work. done. And you know I was again very organized, disciplined, very clean and neat and. this person is not I would say he's.
doing the same thing now. >> What has changed? What has how is this. person today not organized at all? >> I try and be but see we are traveling 11. months. It's so hard. >> It's literally very hard to be very. organized with your stuff. You're. packing. You're literally living in a in. a bag. >> So, you just crush everything in a bag. >> No, no, no. I pack properly. >> Okay. >> But I wouldn't say like my room would be. really really clean after a day or two. Like again, it's not the worst. I have.
seen like I've seen a lot of people who. are worse. >> Okay. >> But I'm not worst. But this person was. like school. subjects that seven books lines subject. wise. like iron your own uniform, polish your. shoes and keep like this was like ultra. I'm not saying I'm bad now, but this was. like too much of a perfectionist. >> So this is maybe not. Now my mom always. says.
perfectionist, confident and what else? deep questions. If you speak to my friends, they would. come and be like, "You're doing a. podcast with Smitty. Are you mad?". That time I'm using my brother's bad. I. think it's bad. It's not even my size. Look at my tiny hands and the bat size. This is my own bat made for me specially. with sponsors on it. It's a good change. >> It's a very good change.
>> It's a good change for women's cricket. I feel it's not only change good change. for me. I think it's a good change for. women's cricket to have this virgin now. >> Yeah. >> And yeah, I don't know. I mean otherwise. I think pretty simil like chill only. I'm chill. I'm still chilling. Still. scared of boo still scared of booth. >> That's the similarity. So you you. pointed out three specific things. Okay. Clearly you wanted to win and you're. winning. You still want to win. I'm sure.
that those things have not changed. >> Those things those things ambition will. keep probably you're more ambitious now. than you were because you must have. realized. >> the power of ambition and what you can. achieve. >> Yeah. Yeah. I believe in manifestation a. lot and I believed I I think I watched. the video like the secrets. I don't. Yeah. So I I am a big big believer of. that. >> I can't read a lot. So I watched my. mentor made me watch it. >> Who was your mentor? So Amrita ma'am was. someone who kind of at that age when I.
was 13 14 kind of took me under her. wings and yeah something she saw in me. at that age I was very I was not. ambitious at that time I would say I. loved cricket I love batting nicely. enjoy. you know I didn't have like. when she saw me and she saw the like I. don't know what she saw join me, but she. was like, "No, you're built for.
something else." And all of that stuff. And then she started teaching me the. kind of right things to do in terms of. fitness fielding. She was very strict. with me at some point of my life. And I. would wake up at 5 a.m. I would wake up at 5:00 a.m. compulsory. I had to do 12 sura namaskars. my one. fitness routine. She had sent it to me. uh like 30 second squad jump as a kid. 30 seconds squat jump, 30 second.
burpees, 30 seconds mountain climber. Okay, five sets I had to compulsory do. it. >> Nice. >> That was like morning. Then I start my. stationary shadow batting all of those. things and till 7:38 I had to do all of. those things every day, day in day out. for like 5 years. And very diligently I. did it. >> I like never ever said like as I said. someone makes me do it, I'll do. And I was really really scared I should. not upset her. >> And in those four five years like she. taught me all the right things in terms.
of like say leading a team as well. She. would make me sit down with a notebook. watches test match wake up in the. morning and just put down field sets. watch me make me watch take me to ground. and watch make me watch a live match and. be like. yeah know all those all those things and. I had to tell her. So like kind of the. cricketing knowledge what I got is what. a lot from her and yeah she made me. watch the video of secret. made me do all of those things right.
like I am ICC number one batter that. world cup winner all of that stuff put. under the pillow sleep have a blank. check. >> yeah I don't know if you've seen secret. >> no tell me tell me all of this. >> okay. >> so what was what did you write and put. it under the pillow Hello. What did you. do. >> as a kid? You know, like she used to. make me ride ICC player number one. player like player of the year and all. of stuff, >> batter of the number one ranked batter,
which is pretty the best thing to. achieve. >> then world cup winner. >> and yeah like there are three four I. exactly I don't like these were the main. things I to like write it on the whole. page. >> put it under the pill. >> whole page like multiple times. Yeah, multiple times like and then I have to. like sleep with it all those morning. >> And then you would put it under your. pillow every day you would write it or. just one time you write. >> every night. Every night this is all. every night. Four, five years I was a. machine at that I and I still feel like. if you work yourself right at 14 to 18.
you're good like in life you would not. maybe but you'll be doing something good. in life. So from 14 to 18 like four or. 14 to 19 four or five years you wrote a. letter every day. >> not a letter it's like a kind of a. notebook which I had to write. >> affirmations. >> huh affirmations and then just like I'm. going to. >> it's like it's already happened I am huh. sorry I am this I am that not that it. will happen it has happened so I had to.
believe that I still I was playing state. level and I'm like oh I'm world's best. pattern so I had to believe that okay I. I will I am going to be or I am already. >> and then put it under the pillow and I. used to find it so stupid and I still. like I don't know I still don't know why. I did it but. >> kind of a lot of things in that came. true also so which is then I was like I. don't have complaints about it but at. that time it was it felt like.
but then yeah she taught me a lot of. right values also like. >> and what else would you like. manifestation letter. What is the other. thing you were saying? >> Then I had to write goals. That's why I. still write goals. I have. >> like 7-day goal, a week, month goal. Like say if I'm developing a short by. end of seven day, I want to learn this. short. >> or I have learned this. >> I have learned the short. >> Okay. You always talk that it has. happened. It has happened. So you start. believing and you start.
>> goal setting was a huge thing for her. Also that. >> goal setting also you write in a way. that which is it has happened to you. >> No goal setting was like more in a way. where I want to get here. >> Okay. >> Yeah. Like 7 days I want to get here. 2. weeks I want to get here. That was a lot. at that time. Now I do maybe a monthly. goal. >> or a yearly goal. I still do that. because I just feel like goals are. something which are the reasons you wake. up and you have that desire to do. and. something like I don't remember what was.
it. I had to like write a blank check. and put it on our photo wall or. something like that and see it every. day. I I don't know what what for what. it was. I was a kid too. >> I was just doing what I was told to do. like I don't know I I think you should. see that secret or I'm sure you would. have seen I'm sure you have seen it. >> because it's a pretty famous thing. >> But why would you write a blank check? Like why would you put a blank check? Mommy, papa, huh? >> I wanted to buy a house for them because.
we were rented house. That was the only. aim of my life. >> Okay. >> Did you ever write that on your paper. that I want to. >> Yeah. I want to buy a house for my mom. then. >> because I saw my mom like really really. work hard to make us where we are or get. us to where we are. So that I was always. like. I was like I'm telling you that kid was. very like confident. like just imagine 13year-old telling her. mom.
just. >> it happened. Yeah. >> Yeah. >> Actually I bought it at 17 only. >> Sweet 18 actually. So it was pretty. cool. Yeah. >> So good. So. >> yeah. So it was like a year later but. yeah. >> nice. so proud. >> So you would write that I I believe in. by the way manifestation, visualization, all of these. I don't find them stupid. at all. >> I don't. >> at that point I found it very stupid. because I was too chu. >> but now I when I look back I just feel.
like yeah it was it was like very. necessary like I feel like prepared for. a lot of things. But it's true and by the way every. person every athlete specifically who. I've met or have read about they used to. follow these certain things. >> okay. >> like Michael Jordan Michael Phelps your. Jookovic. >> everybody. you name it and they have it like in.
women's if you look at right now Alien. Goo she's killing it I don't know if you. know her. >> she's a women's ski player. >> okay skier. >> she's world famous right. master believer or master manifestation. like you just name people and they all. have some kind of ritual. >> so it's not stupid at all. I also still do it uh but not like the. secret but I do it in my own ways of my. >> what is your way.
>> like goal setting is a huge thing for me. >> one month and one year and do you have a. long-term goal as. I think I I gave away that. >> And do you have a goal attached to a. timeline or just a goal? >> Just a goal. And my goals are not to do. with um so I've realized this is a big. change. I think that's a lot of big. change which I had is I don't attach my. goals to scoring a certain runs runs or. winning world cup or winning a specific. tournament.
I think my goals are attached now to. what I want to do in terms of how I how. my day should look like or how my body. should feel like or how my batting where. I want my batting to be at. Give me an. example. >> like say like when two years back when I. sat down and I was like okay I want to. change these things in the next 10. months I should stop eating. >> sugar I have after that I should not. feel like I've missed any sessions going.
into that tournament I have to feel like. I have given everything I could even. after this it doesn't work out it's fine. I'll go back still work hard but I've. given everything I could to get here at. as well. So that's the feeling I wanted. to get. >> and. yeah like so many things like like you. just want to like say I I want to master. a specific specific shot then I just. feel like I'll give you give myself like. that month or two and then I'll try to. work work hard on that specific shot say.
I want to hit sixes at will which is not. particularly my strength and then that's. how then I will want to be at a months. later that I want to do that and I I. know that if I do that for a month, I'll. end up doing that on 31st day. So. >> interesting. And what what happens when. you can't when you don't achieve your. goal? >> It's okay. Put my head down, work hard. again. That's cricket, you know. That's. cricket which is taught me. Get out on. zero, get out on 100. Just put your head. down, get back to work. You get a 100.
also, you have to go back, do your ice. bar, do your recovery sessions. Next day. morning, you have to go still gym. You. get out on zero. same routine. So, you. know, it's just I feel goals are good, but it's not like the end of the world. >> Like I really do everything possible to. get there. But if not, it's fine. I. mean, I I'll just be like, okay, where. have I gone wrong? That's a question. which you need to ask yourself. Like I. ask myself, then you know your answers.
Mostly honest people, honest to. yourself, people know your answer. I. think everyone knows their answers. Some. people accept it, some people don't. I. think I have a very high acceptance of. my own mistakes which is something which. helps me a lot. >> Give me an example of the day where you. made a mistake and tell me the mistake. and then what did you do. >> to fix or something. >> Okay. Not every time, but say sometimes. you get out on 10 runs when you're. batting extremely well and then you sit. down and like.
and then you're like that mobility. session you were lazy you didn't do that. that is why this like you know you just. you know you just know. you just know and then it's like. sometimes you people would like. but there are some people who be like. So, so I think I'm one of I'm the second. part of it. Like I would know that.
>> Nice. And what what was your biggest. mistake? Let's say you said you were at. the best time of your life. You were. informed and still didn't work out. You. stopped thinking about it. >> No, I did think in Dubai World Cup. But. I remember the time I start taking. actions. I forget what's happening. >> Okay. >> So, I've left the Dubai World Cup. The. next morning I called my uh manager and. like I need this this this things like. you know we can't do these things now. for the next whatever years I play. cricket. >> I can't be shooting before like I would.
give you like seven days slaps and then. we'll arrange our shoots. >> I can't be like a mad dog like I'm a. cricketer at the end like I wouldn't. like. >> like my training is more important than. anything else. >> like they always prioritized it but. sometimes you know you you have. But you know I should not manage my. shoot. but now I got a lot more organized with. that. Then I called him saying that I.
want this sort of people to help around. me. >> so that I sort myself up in in a in a. way like training way, nutrition way, all of those things. I made that call. for 10 minutes and I said next 7 days. please get me these things. And that was. like the night we knocked out got. knocked out. Next morning 7 7 7 7 a.m. I. made the call. I changed yoga and. meditation was something which I was. like literally running away from I was. like.
then then I went I I did yoga. I did. meditation. It changed me a lot. >> You do meditation? >> Yeah, I do meditation. I do. >> worked out. >> Yeah, it did work out. It calmed me. down. Got me extremely calm in a very. different way like not even like a. surface level like it actually calmed me. down quite a lot. So that that big. change I had to do and then once I've. made those changes now for me then.
what's happened is not important. for people who have like I feel like who. have the fight to make that change then. they won't dwell on the past mistakes. like if you keep keep crying and sitting. on those mistakes it's I feel is what. are you getting out of it you're not. getting you're not improving yourself. you're not getting better so so yeah. that's one thing which like for me I. never dwell on something for a very long. time. >> long period of time and what happens.
like you're saying that you were in the. form of your life and you were playing. cricket really well and yet then you. couldn't perform and you got knocked out. like what happens. >> cricketing god. >> no but like when you're in form and you. still can't make runs like what is there. what changes in your body and changes in. your approach because you hear this a. lot right like this person was in zone. but he can't perform or she can't. perform and we are watching from the TV.
and we are like yeah we were banking on. her. >> and she's not performing. What goes on. in your head? Is it the pressure that. because I've been playing so well, I. need to play and then that messes up. What is it? >> Yeah, that's one part of it because you. kind of build up that tournament in your. head in a very different way and then. you're just like, okay, I have to do I. have to do I can't get anything wrong by. till here. I can't get anything wrong. So what hap started happening was I I. think I started getting really hard on. myself with these sort of things where I. need to do this, I need to do this, I.
need to do this, I can't go wrong in. these things and again as I said to to. you about my batting like I'm so such a. mad perfectionist around it that. then I start messing up a lot more in my. head even more if it's a bigger. tournament coming. and then it kind of deteriorates It's a. little more. So, so yeah, I think more. than the pressure pressure to see as. cricketers if you're batting well match.
big match in all it's a. it's a first four five balls thing. >> Okay. Like after first four five balls. you wouldn't feel it a lot like you know. like when you like like first four five. balls is the time where you kind of be. before because bigger the match it's not. the match day which is which feels. pressure the. >> the approach towards the match the night. before that the morning before that is.
when you start if you you're stressing. about it. >> but once the match starts and the first. three four balls happen. >> you're not think oh this is the biggest. match of my life you don't think all. those things you know it's only the. first four five balls where you have. that jitters and nerves and if I would. get out in the first four five balls I. would have been like yes I have to work. on my jitters but I would never get out. on the first four five balls it was. after that. >> m. >> that means the solution and all is not. jitters or big pressure it's something. different.
>> interesting. >> like you know if you go and first ball. you get out. >> in a big match. >> I would say okay maybe that is pressure. Yeah, that's anxiety and anxiety, nervousness, nerves. You've played first. five, six balls like whatever in. whichever nerves you have, you've. played, >> you've got the sixth ball of your. innings, you not like you're not thinking about. match occasion as much in your head. You're just thinking batting. >> the next ball. >> Huh? Next ball. So, I don't think it was.
ever to do with the pressure or anything. for me. It was more to do with the. buildup for the tournament in my head. than overthinking around it and then. losing my feel overthinking about it and. then when you're when as a batter when. you're not feeling the way you want to. feel because of what my batting is. It's. more like a touch batting. It's not. power batting. So if you don't feel the. way you do. it, it doesn't come in results. It's. very hard. Then. >> walk me through the day like walk me. through the night before. Uh what was.
going in your head? No. No. You you said. you were overthinking pressure stuff. like that. Overinking overnight. then I'm like. because it's such a weird thing. It's like.
again it's not a form. It's again how. you are your body's feeling. Sometimes. your bottom hand is tired some and for. feel and touch players it's very. important for me at least it is very. important. So, so yeah those seven days. and then I start thinking a lot about it. then I go back to the room and I'll. think a lot about it try and change. something and then something else. happens then next day it's even worse. batting then same then the chain happens. until I approach the tournament it's. gone so I at that time now of course I.
have said that it is okay it is fine. >> don't overthink it's in last two years I. think I've got that right. >> m So even if I'm not feeling fine, it is. okay. This one, two words, three words. is has changed a lot for me. >> Is it same in the world cup as well? >> Yeah. >> Or is little different because you're. the final match, world cup night. There. must be some extra thought or extra. pressure in your head or no like no this.
just another day. >> 10 15 minutes. world cup whatever. >> Okay, let's let's do like take like me. on the day of final match of the world. cup let's say. Um, you have to walk me. through that day like as if I'm there. and like tell me what happened, when did. you wake up, what did you do, what was. the first thought, who did you meet, the. team ritual, breakfast, like walk me. through the entire day with details. >> When you wake up and you realize it's a. big match day a little bit maybe if your.
heart is racing at 65, it will race at. 75 from that day. >> Date me like don't don't tell me what. like tell me. >> mornings I wake up for breakfast as. usual. >> Okay. You woke up now we have an. afternoon and evening matches. >> go to world cup final. I think we went to I went to breakfast. everyone's families were there there. partil right so. >> at breakfast it felt like it's our floor. everyone's mom dad's like literally it. felt like one big Indian cricket family.
when I was here it was pretty cool. >> uh like till I went till the breakfast I. just felt like oh and then I saw. everyone I was just so very happy about. What was you said? >> Like I just woke up and I was like, "Oh, I just woke up finally." You know, I. just felt it and then I was like. and then I saw. >> What time did you get up? >> Nicely woke up. I'm chill like that. 9. 8:39. I woke up freshen up.
I think I started breakfast chilled with. everyone 11 11:30 went back did my. mobility routine uh half an hour. little bit activation stuff took a. shower ground it's a walking distance. that we stayed at. courtyard marit and it's like literally. the div is just walking distance.
>> which I don't I love the stadium but I. like 10 minutes drive to the stadium why. >> for my music just it gets you in a in a. zone like no you just feel like you. should listen to two three songs. So for. Dy Partil matches I used to start. listening to songs on AirPods in room. only. So like what song do I get? depends tour to tour. love songs sad songs. I'm more of that but akal to like tufan.
and all of that like you know full so. depends on what zone or mood I am in. >> so before going to the world cup we are. listening a sad song. >> I am I could I am pretty capable of. doing that because I feel it calms me no. like like slow songs not like sad also I. would say Slow song. >> Have your favorite slow song. Slow song. Yeah. >> I big fan. >> Which one?
seasonal. >> I think my alltime favorite of him would. be. world cup finals. I heard a lot of like this um South. Indian entry songs, BGM songs like. background music song. was my go-to song for a very long time.
like I would feel like okay it doesn't. suit my personal my problem and my. person I think in my mind a certain way. but in on like my personality is not. such. >> okay what do you think of yourself in. >> I'm like a collar up and red one dude. >> not dude like I'm just like one huh I'll. fight everyone. >> Okay. >> And I'm like there I'll be playing a. shot and smiling. like I'm like you're not this I don't. know sometimes what it is like. >> so you're south Indian hero in your. head. >> Yeah. Like you know like full like entry.
song with a gole and all but somehow it. doesn't happen. like even I get a 100 and I'll be like. okay I'm just like. >> jump and have a like hand like moment. and I will like show to all of those. things. Then what I do is I just remove. helmet and just do this. >> reality. >> So so yeah. So that I think I heard two. three songs before going to the final. >> then got into the bus. >> which was 2 minutes bus drive.
>> and then rain happened. We had a rain. delay for an hour which was stupid. >> I'm like. as I said start is always very. important. and then whatever happens happens. That's the toughest part of the match. day any match day is the first approach. towards the first three footballs. because mentally it's like a like you're. getting towards that right and you're.
doing everything towards that. >> as a batter. So you just have to make sure that you. are really calm about it. So rain. happened and I'm like start. then of course magically disappeared. We. had a toss. We lost a toss. We we're. batting first. I was like okay batting. first team meeting before the match. >> The new thing I started a little soaking. in the environment. Sometimes I go 5. minutes uh before and I soak in the.
environment like so that I'm used to it. >> When I play I should not feel stressed. >> Okay. So first I enter I like kind of. see and like like when it's loud and all. I just try and soak it in and be. comfortable around it because once. you're comfortable you just feel like. okay it's your space. >> because once your heartbeat get. >> it just feels normal. I try and do it before only. So I was in. my zone more. >> Has it happened with you before where.
you've not been able to soak in the. environment and then. >> 2017 World Cup final I think I got out. third ball zero. I was 8 19 year old. I. never knew what to do what happened till. the World Cup started. I was already out. on zero. I'm coming back and I'm like I. didn't know what happened like. >> because you couldn't take in the. environment. >> Yeah. taken the environment did not do. all of those things like you know I. didn't make myself feel comfortable I. just went to bat saw that it was first. time women's cricket had 20 odd thousand.
people in lords at lords and that's my. first match at lords. everything happening at once I went and. the third ball is like t zero out till I. realized what's happening I was already. out like. >> so you were not focused on the batting. you were focused on like. >> I wouldn't say I was focused that it's. just that Even if you're not focusing. it, I feel it's more than avoiding it, you should just embrace it. >> At that time, I was avoiding it.
>> Now I'm like, wow. You know, like, you. know, that's how it's changed. Now I'm. like, I embrace it. I'm like, it's fine. You know, all of those things. So that. happened. I went to bat doing all of the. things also. First four, five balls, I. don't know what happened. Ball came my. or didn't hit my I don't know. I didn't. realize after fifth or sixth ball I was. like ah ch and then then yeah I mean it. was pretty cool after that what happened. after 7 8 hours. >> we won the world cup. >> so what was going on in your head when.
you were going for the batting. >> just I only tell myself watch the ball. and play accordingly there's not too. much I tell myself. >> nothing but how do you get back like how. do you get your heartbeat normal just by. soaking in the environment you get. >> I try and do like three four deep. breaths if at all. I feel sometimes a. lot. >> but very rarely I I'm pretty like like. again a very chill person. >> What do you do like deep breath as in.
like you count. >> like just like 3 seconds in 3 seconds. out. Sometimes when I feel it. >> sometimes if it's a D20 match and I. played two three dot balls and then you. have that pressure of getting that. scoreboard going. So that time just to. clear your mind at that time you want to. play five shots sometimes I just and. then I'm like okay watch the ball. because still even that time the basics. don't change no like the basics of. batting don't change so I have to remind.
myself baba bigger the occasion you're. still like the basics of batting. watching the ball. >> sometimes it's like too much pressure. too much pressure man in the head not. the match also but sometimes you feel. like. >> you played at lords now you played that. test match. And we hadn't played red wall first time. at Lord. So and from T20 World Cup we. just straight away went to. So I had to. keep telling myself Baba must mask you. know you don't do musty like you know. after T20 you're playing test match.
>> and as opener you're like there you have. to hit here you have to like play out. So sometimes I'm like I'm the best play. according to so it's like some. affirmation words for. >> you tell yourself you talk to yourself. >> Yeah. If that's what I said if sometimes. I feel like okay I have to get in a zone. that days some days you are in that. zone. So you it again depends on what. day you're in. >> and know when you're walking let's say. you changed put the kit you're walking. on the ground walking on the pitch till. that time do you tell yourself anything.
do you talk to yourself? N. >> I have that routine. Touch the ground. Go sideways twice. Side side sideways. just twice. Three back flips. Look at the sun just near the 23 yards. Like just do that. And yeah, just start. And then first three balls in your head. you're thinking you're thinking. first. first three balls you like.
like what is first three because you. said first three four balls are the most. problematic. So. >> I said I said like when it's a bigger. match day. >> for everyone you said. >> Yeah. For me it's not actually I'm like. not like a very first three football. persons. I don't know if I have some random stats. I've got out on 70s 80s and 90s I don't. know some number of times. >> X number of times.
>> Yeah I think I would have had like 20. odd extra centuries if I would have not. like really done all those things. So. but first two three balls just same. thing watch the ball play accordingly. okay. and what happens at 80. >> I am also still wondering what happens. there was a year where I was not getting. out on anymore and I had cracked it like. I just feel it's cricket yeah I mean you. can't overthink from some things you.
At that time it is sometimes like you're. batting extremely well. It's not. like that 50%. So in that you get out. M.
thank you very much. But I have realized. I think. cricket has its own way to answer your. questions like you can do a lot of. things right you can do lot of things. here and there. >> but sometimes when it has to come it. will come when it doesn't have to come. it wouldn't come and now I've accepted. it that. >> take it just put your head down do your.
work. >> but how do you come in the zone then if. let's say you are not in the zone. >> zone form overrated word it's not like. you're not inform your sometimes you're. not batting the way you want to bat. Sometimes you're not you're batting well. but some days your mind is running like. a train. >> It's just like so many thoughts are. coming. That is the day where maybe I feel I'm. not in zone because the at my best I. don't think I just watch the ball and.
react. That's the best I bet. >> Okay. But there are days where you like. you start thinking the shot beforehand. >> That is when I feel I'm not in zone and. that's when I have to just remind myself. like what's the ball like you know. that's how I want to do that day. >> Nice. Interesting. And do you have a. superstition? >> I used to have many. >> Tell me. So generally I sit on the left side of.
the bus fourth seat. >> but it's I don't it's superstition it's. just got used to as a kid you enter. and then it's just a thing. >> then I should always enter from the left. side of the so I open so the person is. always on the right and I have to be on. the left I broke that on WL final. actually. Wow, what a day. And yeah, I'm like.
200 is a huge score to chase. like right it's just enter and I was. like anyways. right and actually we chased it down so. now it's nothing there like now I'll. enter wherever it is left. superstition then.
then. I still have a little bit but I've. changed a lot. I don't want the leg. guard to be given at the first go. I don't think anyone has ever had that. So you go first thing and you ask for a. leg guard your leg. >> So I don't like the umpire telling in. the one go that's on your leg. I like so. that's why I cast the bat a little. further away and then she will or he. will tell me to get the bat in. >> to mark the leg guard. So I have to have.
it like twice thrice like I can't have. it on the one go. >> Nice. >> Very strange. It is. >> good. >> And I don't know if it's superstition or. if I get out I tap the boundary three. times. >> Yes. Completely. I don't know how it. started. >> after getting out. >> Yeah. superstition. I don't know that's a that's a thing I.
don't know why it has happened and I. think it's a more. your father and mother do they have a. superstition. >> mommy used to not watch for the longest. time she said. problem. and then you know mommies are. you. So she used to she used to not watch. She now tries to watch but bigger. matches she can't watch. She gets very. nervous like World Cup final. My mom. she's like she told that firstly tickets.
problem but she's like I want one ticket. for myself. I'm not coming to watch the. match but I'll come to see you guys lift. the trophy. So I want the ticket to. enter. So she watched. She didn't come. for the match. She she was she was at. our hotel room from up like you could. see the ground. >> she was up there 15 minutes 10 minutes I. think when we were supposed to win she. came down. so that's like that's my mom my father.
my brother is very like serious you'll. watch it very seriously papa is chill. I don't think they have I'll ask them. next time. >> do they have any superstition or. anything. >> yeah I'll have to ask them. >> but you call them after. >> match before match I call. When I sit in the bus, first thing I. call is mom, dad. >> Then they have a particular way of. saying all the best like with a tone. My. mom has a tone to say all the best and. my father has a tone as well. >> So they that's their superstition I. think like when they wish me they will.
say nothing just all the best. That's it. Like sometimes like in UK. you're playing and. enjoy like it's a two-minute call but. >> I don't remember a match I've played. without calling them. Yeah, it's always. as a kid I've always called him even. now. >> But it's just a ritual since years you. have made it. >> Yeah. I I don't know when it started or. what happened but it's for the longest. time for the last 15 20 years I remember. going for a math and calling them.
>> Nice. That's a good thing. >> Yeah. That's a nice thing. Getting a. blessing. Getting blessings from my. parents before match is pretty cool. >> Hey, good. Who between both of them who. sacrificed most for you? >> I think both in their own ways have. sacrificed for me. But mom in particular. sacrifice but she like because of those. whole problems of family. We kind of had. to change our house and then of course. father was part of the joint business we. had. So when we had nothing like he.
didn't know what to do a lot and then my. mom used to start doing ex exhibition. she was very creative and that's how she. actually raised us and maybe she used to. always she used to work there and again. cook as well take care of the house so. yeah in that ways I think she's kind of. sad but never. like. They tried their best to get whatever.
best we could. And when did you realize. that she's sacrificing or she's like. working really hard to make sure that. you. >> always because I used to help her with. all those things. >> from day one you like from very early on. you realize only when you start. realizing I understood. you know. but I knew my mom is like really like. working so much. I used to help her do. table mats go for her exhibitions. I.
used to stand in the exhibitions like. it's like the exhibition halls of the. like used to go to other cities used to. take the stuff and I was I I've done. abbecas. >> you see mass that so I've done all the. eight levels so my math is pretty good. >> nice. >> so I I so I used to have like the clips. as well hair clips so my calculation. I tell auntie auntie 400 what so I've. done all of those I've seen her like. work really hard so it was like for For.
me it was always like you know I want to. give a very nice life to them. >> And they used to always encourage you to. play cricket right? They were very. supportive but relatives were not in the. beginning. Till that point anyone had not even. heard like women playing cricket and. start mate was like when I played school. level and all we traveled from a general.
boogie and all of that and. >> for a maradi family it's a little like. like. all those like I would also I still feel. it's like genuine concern concerns also. like. but like genuine concerns also key how. will she manage she's just nine or 11. like mom wanted me to play sports but.
she was very keen on tennis. >> because at that time against sa miza was. a huge impact. >> and single individual sports she wanted. me to do individual sports plus women's. tennis was lot famous than women's. cricket at that time way bigger you knew. Sarina Williams you knew Maria Sharapoa. they were like big names she wanted me. to do that was and I. >> there was someone to look up to. Yeah. >> Yeah. Because there was at that time I. didn't know a lot of women cricketers. You don't know what's happening. So uh.
so yeah I think my mom wanted me to play. sports but tennis more but very early. she understood batting. so I used to be like. so that's how then they were like pretty. cool with it and then it after two three. years so it became like they are. dreaming that. >> nice I should like. >> what would they say like when I was. reading again somewhere relatives. This is all every relative talks like.
mommy is also like me. know they were very like but the best. thing never came to us what happens. problem. but papa how would he respond. >> same I think papa though he doesn't care. I think my family in general they not. very like.
that's why they've let me like just be. >> nice. >> like I I could take my own decisions at. any point in my life and they. they're all worried is my happiness and. my wellbeing. >> and if that is happening yeah if that is. happening they don't care if they're. upsetting the world they're upsetting. the relents. >> that is So good. So that's a very that's. luck.
>> That's luck. >> That's absolute luck. >> Like they only care is about me and B. I. have to be happy. >> Yeah. >> Which is so rare cuz there are every. parent wants their kids wellbeing and. happiness. But there are some parents. who care about way more than anything. else. And they're just so sad. >> It's a very normal thing. I feel it's a. very normal. They would like again I. don't know why it happens but they would. do a certain way be a certain way.
because what people will think and all. but yeah I have never even been raised. in that environment like. you know. for me it was always like no like you. know you you want to do what you you got. to do what you got to do kind of a thing. like. I don't care. I did still. >> But you said like I don't care still.
like. >> No, but the kid version of you didn't. care at all. But today. Right. But uh yeah, I I don't think I. still care about people think what will. happen. >> Never. >> I think it's just a like with now social. media just a 20day thing. 20. >> 15 days.
like if you win also you lose also. It's. just a 20 15 20 day thing, right? >> You have a 30inut rule which is. >> Yeah, it's a 30-minut rule. I don't. dwell on anything more than 30 minutes. It's not a rule but. >> but you can make it one. >> Yeah. So it's a good rule. >> It's a good rule to give in a playbook. of Smithy Mandana mindset playbook. >> I don't know mindset. there. It can be a great rule. Let the. world actually know this. >> Yeah. It's a like I go back and it's.
like a in my mind stop 30 minutes but. like I wouldn't dwell on anything in. life not only cricket anything in life. 30 40 minutes. >> I think I've got up done. yeah anything happens I've got. >> Do you have emotions do you let yourself. >> I think I don't have a lot of emotions. >> do you allow yourself to feel. >> even when You're alone, let's say, not.
in front of public. Let's say this is a. very public version of you. >> No, no, of course I do feel and I have. those emotions. >> You're not numb or do you feel that. you've gotten numb? >> So, I could go quiet, but like crying, sadness is something which I don't. relate myself a lot to. Yeah, I don't. know why, but it's very weird. But. there'll be people around me crying. about something and I would just have. extremely practical approach to that.
>> Okay. >> Because I feel I think it's a blessing. some people who can cry because I don't. cry as like quickly. >> and I just feel like you should let the. person be them. I'm not a huge believer. who. or and there's no written success path. or any path. >> and what is success I mean people. success actually success is being happy.
no like it's not about like what people. have made success to be success I feel. success is actually just. >> waking up having a good 8 hours sleep. and being happy within your own self and. I feel if someone wants to let out their. emotions do that and if I am I what I am. I can be that but I do feel on days. where those self-doubts and all those. things come but again like 30 minutes. and I'll start doing something else. >> Do you cry?
>> Maybe bathroom sometimes but. bathrooms and shower and sometimes yeah. maybe front of maybe one or two people. of like I feel like. >> when was the last time you cried? Mm-. Good question. I don't remember. You know, I cry for movies. >> I don't cry for my real life. >> Okay. >> If I watch a movie, I cry. So I think I was watching Mustafir Cafe.
and it just caught me emotional, happy, emotional and I cried. >> Why? I also got very emotional at movie. I don't know like. >> very amishaf. very nice not even I got very happy. emotionally I was like yeah man I also. want to do something like just leave. everything just go open your own cafe. >> I took right for. >> Prii. no I was. >> like you know that I mean the character. Priy I felt bad for her I was like just. emotions.
like happy emotions so cool like you. know just away from the world away from. everything just go on do your own bit. like I think after cricket that's me. like you know. >> not seeing not like just. >> you want to be alone away. >> alone means just in your cafe halfway. there. >> yeah yeah just being whatever wherever I. would be just like because again I'm not. a very social person. >> so that's how. >> but if you will see something in the.
movie you will cry about that in. bathroom. >> no no I'll cry there only so I remember. crying crying for cafe in UK when I was. watching it. >> Yeah, that's the last time I cried. No, >> you said like. if you feel like you know some matches. hurt you, >> some matches hurt you know like. >> what was the last match that hurt you? >> See Dubai really hurted me like World. Cup hurt necessarily. I I did cry a.
little bit after that. this World Cup we could not make it to. the semis. Did that that hurt me? Not. necessarily I cried but I did it hurt me. but there are a few matches where you. feel like I should have like. >> and what hurts you your own performance. or team's performance who do you blame. >> first you should always start with. yourself. like that's like that's how you have to.
be. >> first you should start about your own. self what you could have done better if. you are the one who's like. means you only don't have expectations. of that you could win that match. Fair. So I think I start with my own. self first. then maybe think a little bit about the. team how like. this person would have played like what. we could have done better as a team.
like. but I don't think I'm not necessarily. like I would go to a press conference. and name anyone nameropping. like you're a team, you should back each. other and like. >> you win as a team. You don't. >> you can criticize the performance. You. can criticize that okay this went wrong. This should have gotten better. We could. not prepare whatever job be but name.
dropping is something which I'm not big. fan of. >> Fair which is the right approach. You. win as a team, you lose as a team. >> You lose as a team and then first. introspect within yourself. Do you feel. responsible. >> for a lot of things? >> Yeah, of course. >> Because you you use certain vocabulary. which is very interesting. Like almost. every time you say like when when you. were speaking about your mentor, you. said the first thought was I should not. upset her, >> right? When you were talking about your. mom and dad,
then you with the team as well. Do you feel like do you have this. constant feeling of. >> this is my one big problem that you know. I start I like blame myself first a lot. about everything or I feel responsible. for that person as well a lot. >> which is a good thing also a bad thing. also. >> why is it a good thing and why is that a. bad thing. >> good thing that I'm not putting things. on like anyone I'm being a good person. like technically. >> bad things is sometimes like which now I. have changed a lot that you don't let.
that person take decisions like because. they have to also learn from their own. >> like mistakes be your parents your. friends your teammates whoever so that's. something which I think I've learned now. with the leadership roles with WPL and. everything that you know you you just. let them be. guide them here and there but what they. do is not your responsibility like I I. don't know how do I explain it because.
what I am what I am because of my. mistakes. And if I kind of protect them again and. again about their mistakes, they're. never going to grow. >> Then they'll start being dependent. And. you need leaders in your team. >> You don't want someone who's following. someone. You just want leaders because. 15 leaders is great. Leaders in a sense. in your in their own life. >> So So yeah, again, I've changed that. quite a lot now. >> Okay. What's uh how do you think about.
leadership? >> See I I I was always a captain as a kid. and I started leading Maharashtra team. when I was 16. >> Uh like the senior senior side I was. leading when I was 16. >> Okay. And like I never knew but I I. think I started enjoying it as well. because. like I feel. I feel I think like.
that that sometimes uh you know the. preparation part in terms of leader. leadership the preparation towards the. game I think that whole process is. something which. >> I really really enjoy a lot and uh and. yeah I mean of course I've got privilege. to WPs and I've been vice captain for a. very long time. So, so yeah, you've been. in and around and I think I really enjoy. it. >> Doesn't that scare you? >> Captainship. >> Yeah, the pressure of being a captain.
>> I mean, you play for India anyways. You. >> there's an extra pressure of being a. captain. No, I'm sure there is. >> See, yeah, there is answerability more. for sure. what decisions you take win. and loss but I feel you have I think you. you should be able to take it in a way. where if you are accepting it you have. to take it and I think I really enjoy. that part as I said it's not just that. pressure part and all but I just feel. like I really enjoy. um getting to the game doing the.
analysis matchups and you know who to. bowl what's happening what's the best. combinations how the wicket is looking. how's the ground and all of those things. And my favorite part of WPL is actually. planning for auction. It's it's pretty. fun. It's like like what team. combinations you you're looking at. And. with all of that, when you know you've. done the hard work, even as a captain is. a hard work. You've done that hard work, results don't come. Then you have to. take the criticism for sure. But again, it's like batting. >> You do the hard work, but you can get.
out on zero. And you do the batting, you do the hard. work, you can get a 100. It's same with. captainship. And I think I I treat it as. a third skill for me because I don't. bowl. It's like batting fielding and. third skill is captainship. So I treat. is at that like you're going to get good. things and bad things with it. >> But it may becomes natural to you. because you're in general as a person. you are somebody who's like always. taking accountability always making sure.
that everyone is before me. >> That's true actually. And uh that's. always I've grown up like that. As I. said, I think the answer question you. asked me maybe the answer was because I. was leading teams always as a 16 year. old. I was always leading teams and as a. captain you're probably the last person. on the list though you are the first on. the list but you what you want is the. last. >> You are there for what people want. >> True. So I think that is where that. quality has also come to me because like.
at a at a age of 16 17 to throw in a. senior leadership like kind of a thing. >> was something very like. >> and I think I was 21 22 when I was vice. captain for the Indian team also for D20. side. >> So I was like at that point you can't be. thinking about yourself because even if. you've had a bad match I can't cry. I. should be making I should make sure that. I'm like helping everyone out. So that's. how it's come I think as a kid. >> Ah as a as a kid since since you were a.
kid you've been the elder. >> elder sister you've been in the junior. team actually become captain in senior. team. >> Yes. >> Yeah bunch of things. So you've been. prepar getting prepared for all of this. since very long. >> I think God prepares you and gives you. at the right time. I again I believe in. that a lot. Do you have this habit of. making people dependent on you? Huh? Because no, you'll always be the I'm the. big sister. I'm the person in the house. I'm this like don't worry.
All of that. Do you have that? >> Yeah, I do have that. Yeah, I do have that a lot. Um, yeah. I mean, I used to have that a lot, but now I I think in the last one two. years I've changed a lot. Now I don't. feel that anymore. like someone comes. with something also I'll give them a. very practical and cricket and you. figure out your way.
okay I'll stand there make them make. sure that they are fine about it and all. of that I'll still do that in my own. ways but not very like that that person. should not think I helped them it should. be more in a way where they fought their. own battle I was there. >> so that's a very different there are two. very different things. >> Yeah. >> So when you're just there and they are. fighting their own battle and you're. just there, it just feels that they know. that next time it comes I can fight it. because.
then they don't know what to do now. True. So now I think I've changed that. >> You've changed that. And how did you. realize that? I think life only. >> Okay. >> But you were like that since you were a. kid. >> Ah, it was very um like even if I have a. bigger brother, I was always like elder. sister to him. >> So it was always like even my friends. who are my same age always be like a. mother to them like me. I don't know why.
it was there but it was always there. But now I don't think now I'm chill. about it. Do you put other people before. you? >> I think so. That's Yeah, I do that a. lot. >> They should. >> Yeah, because what happens with. unemotional people? No, like me. >> I'm like I'll take care of their. emotions. >> It's like I will be fine. So that is. something which happens a lot to me that.
I'll always take care of like everyone's. emotions around me and everyone knows. that I'll be fine you know that way. >> So it happens a lot with me. >> And if do you also feel like let's say. if mom's getting let's say sad about. something oh I should make her happy and. I'll make I'll make sure that she'll get. happy. Do you get that? >> And then dad also and then you wouldn't. or brother also. Cuz like you feel like. you're responsible to make sure. everyone's happy around you. >> Yeah. Because if someone is sad around.
me, I feel like I need to do something. You know, >> this is I'm same. >> like I put other people. >> Putting everyone before you is not a. very good thing. I do that a lot and. that's why I put myself last. There are probably two or three. decisions only in my entire life where. I've been selfish.
>> and I'm guilty about all of them. Like I. can I know exactly the two specific. decisions I've taken where I've I was. like I'm selfish and I'm just going to. take care of my happiness. And I'm still. guilty. think about it being years. thinking. >> but I am that person like I would want. everyone to be happy around me. >> even if I'm shooting my team is there. like if someone is sad or angry I'll. make sure like they're okay fine about.
it. >> yeah just a very inbuilt thing and I. don't know why it is but. I mean meditation internalize. As I. meditate, I'm blank. >> Okay. >> Very. >> you're not thinking about patterns and. reflections and things like that. >> The person who was taking meditation. also got a little like. you're surprised that okay I've not done. meditation. It's a good thing she said.
that you don't. >> I would think like I'm drowning. somewhere and all that but not life. problems or life stuff. I don't remember. I meditated and I've thought of cricket. or anything in the life at all. >> because very yeah I don't know it's a. god. >> it's a it's a very good thing so I was. exactly like you meditation and all that. is not for me. but I started breath work that was like. one step closer to. >> you know actually breath work I find a. little boring than meditation meditation.
is. >> better for. How. breath work is also nice but it's a. little taxing. >> Meditation is relaxing. >> I enjoy my breath work a lot. I've very. recently started like probably couple of. months. >> and very good like I' I've seen my state. being calmer and the same I feel. like I'll think about 20 things. this is. this is not like overthink but like.
always on the go like this needs to be. done this needs to be done but when I'm. doing a breath work my breath work coach. also asked me like why what were you. thinking of I was nothing I was almost. sleeping. one thing it's not. >> it's a one thing then that we are in. present mode. >> very present like I I think about. something so these thoughts also let's. say something where I've Being selfish. example, it'll come for me. It'll come.
to me for like 20, 30, 40 minutes. >> You also have 30 minutes somewhat. >> You also have a 30 minutes then. >> and then it'll be gone. Then I'll be on. to the next thing. >> Yeah. I I don't know what will happen. thinking about it. It's not that things. are going to change. Live with it. So. >> but I don't coming back to the point of. where it's like not doing things for.
yourself is often. is is is a question that because I ask. lot of questions of people I I see this. >> like cricket for myself which is pretty. cool like you know you do podcast for. yourself. >> Agreed. I mean. large body of a life you're doing it for. yourself. Like I bat I and I don't think. anything in life can make me happier. than batting. >> and I bat every day. >> So that's what I'm doing in my life. There are so many people even around you.
that. >> that basic work they don't do what they. love. >> True. And I think we could also make people. happy or do what we could is because our. basic work is the work which we love the. most. >> That's a good perspective. >> Yeah. And I don't think I need any. selfcare more than that. >> I agree. Now. >> like when I bat. I you just go in a very happy zone and I.
just feel like nothing can match this. No one can match this. Leave nothing. No. one can match this. And. what else you do more? No. Like. >> bang on. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. There's no self-care which can. make me happier than this. >> Yeah. That's it then. Yes. You're doing. this. >> So this is Yeah. So I'm the most selfish. here. I do this for myself. >> Like there are people who leave what. they want to do for someone like parents. or people. >> for some responsibility they have. >> They would do that. And then I would be. like okay that's very scary.
>> You're doing things for other people. because you're not happy within them. I. could do things for other people because. very happy within myself. >> I don't think God would have made or I. would have been able to do only that for. people if I was not happy. So I don't. think it's a very kind of a selfless or. selfish. It's a you are a content like. you're content with your. >> it is what it is. Yeah, it is. >> It makes it makes a lot of sense. But.
now I'm thinking like would. would I be the same person where I'm. putting other people first if I was not. doing this. I think my answer would be. yes because I was. >> yeah I mean. >> before that I was exact I was still the. kind of person. >> maybe you would have got frustrated and. stopped it or. >> I haven't I still put other people. >> still having this you don't know your. life if you didn't have this. >> I have this fair I would have stopped at. some point. >> yeah I would have maybe not been this. person if cricket or god or batting.
would have not given me what it has. you. >> know and all the frustrations in life. around everyone comes because that basic. thing they're not happy with. >> True. >> So I'm very happy. >> this I am also very happy. I would have. been very frustrated as a man. >> and then. >> if I was not doing this. >> and that will add add up pile up to you. not being helpful. >> like. >> yeah yeah. >> at some point right it would not come.
maybe 5 years 10 years but it will. >> you know but yeah I think it's also to. do with because we are very content and. happy people in our own professional. space. >> true you know in fact that is that is so. funny in fact whenever I talk to my. cousins or or my friends that's usually. one of the first let's say my. prerequisites or advices which I tell my. you know my people around me it's like. if you are thinking of this partner as.
your partner for life just make sure do. they have something that they where. they're happy like truly happy without. you. >> because if they've not figured out one. thing where they can be themselves and. they're happy it'll be very difficult. Yeah, it is very difficult in general. like if you don't have something which. >> because it makes you angry as a person. frustrates you. >> Yeah. And then it's all on people around. you and everything around that. So I.
feel that's like for me that's a very. like that's something I tell everyone. again say that. >> you can only give happiness if you're. happy. >> like happy soul. I mean like you know. you can't. >> but do you let do you feel happiness for. more than 30 minutes. >> I am happy I don't feel excitement more. two different things yeah. >> okay you don't get excited at all. >> no I do like see the first time I got. the ICC award I remember calling my. parents my brother in a conference call.
and being like all prepped up about. mommy papa can't believe. and I have done all that for 15 20. minutes but my family is also like very. blah. Mom, dad of course they are very excited. people like. but yeah that's about it after 20 30. minutes I'm like okay fine up. >> like yeah so. >> do you play to win or do you play to not.
lose. >> oh. interesting I never thought about it. >> think. >> pretty much same Oh, >> very different way of playing. >> I think. >> Do you hate losing or do you love. winning? What what's a stronger emotion? >> I think I love. playing. >> Yeah, fair. Which is why you play. >> losing a parcel part and parcel of the.
game is what I would. >> take out cricket. >> Let's say other sports. You're very. competitive and aggressive. I know that. >> winning. I think. >> you hate losing or you. >> I love winning. I don't think I hate. anything in life. >> Are you a bad loser? >> Could be in other sports. Yes. Not in. cricket. Cricket like of course it's a. bread and butter. >> Yeah. So. >> it's not cricket. Like we're just. talking about you as a person. >> With my friends and family. Yes. Not. with random people. I would. >> You're a bad You're sore losers. >> Yeah. With my brother. I could. >> What do you do when you lose?
>> I throw a fit. I would be like, "What is. this? cheating. whatever I speak around cricket I'm not. that person then why what changes you. just like that inbuilt which is there. and then and that's how I am with. batting also I am very egoistic as a. batter. >> explain. >> like if I get beaten in nets.
I like I can't take. In my head I'm like can't leave getting. out even if I get beaten or something. I'm just like no that's not you know. next session I'll come in full like. that's what I'm saying maybe my. personality is not such but my mind is. that way that next my next next practice. session I'm like. and not that I show it in my aggression. but in my head it's small battles which. I have to have and yeah I have I hate.
Like if I get LBW and bold there's two. dismissals. I can't sleep. Sleep means that like. this both I can't get. arrogance arrogance it's like a. selfresect ego.
but that's something which I like I. always pride. like. thank you then I'm like I can't. I will be like I knew I know that I'm. in my own mind that I have it. So it's.
very funny like sometimes I get out and. the coach would be like. that day I'll still be like I'll come. back I'll be still the day I get bold. and like. you are chill about it. So that's that's. like LBW and are something which I'm not. too fond of. >> Do you think that ego makes you better. as a player? this ego, >> it can crash you or get you better.
>> For you, >> for me, I think it drives me because I'm. such a chilled out personality that if I. didn't have this personality in me, it. would not like give that fire in me. >> M. >> because I am like a rich types person a. lot. So if in my batting also I would be. that that would have not like now I. constantly keep thinking how to get. better, how to get better. is because of. that ego in my mind. So, so yeah, I. think it kind of motivates me to get up.
like. so I think it's good also for me like. personality like me it's very good. >> Where do you get your fire from? Like. what drives you? Like is it other people bother you that. who has told you that you can't play and. you're wrong. >> to prove them wrong or is like your. expectation that. was itself or is it others.
or is it someone else. like I've done so much of hard work with. betting I can't get out like this you. know that kind of a ego comes M. >> let me know I'm better than this sort of. a thing. Yeah, that drives me. >> It's within like you see yourself in. your head as the player. So you better. want to. >> but if you play that way yeah you have.
to see yourself as the player. You have to think that you are the. player. >> Even if you're not, you have to think. you are the player. Otherwise, how is. people going to believe that you're the. player? You have to think now that I do. feel like though my attitude, my walk. and all that is not there. But in my. head, I'm I know like don't take like. panga like you know in my head I would. be in that zone.
>> That's that's true. You know my one of. my mindset coaches made me do this. exercise very early on. So whenever I. would do a podcast with this is like two. years ago. Yeah. uh two years ago. So whenever I would do. podcast with someone that really big. right and I wish then I would become. very small like do you do you get what I. mean? So let's say. >> if I'm doing a podcast with Bill Gates, right? So in I wouldn't be this chill.
like he's here to be this chill but I. would just be like succumb and become. that. >> and I would not be my natural self and I. would not think that I'm the player and. this is the game that I'm playing and I. would just succumb to that pressure. >> and questions which I know because for. someone like him I've been preparing for. 20 years. >> in your head for world cup you're. preparing since the time you have picked. up a bat right so that's the so that for. me is that kind of day. So and I I used.
to bad. >> you could see that there are one podcast. before you will see like. >> and then my mindset coach like he told. me that what do you feel? I'm like I. just feel like I'm not I'm not the. player like I'm not that guy. He's like. who's that guy like do you have that. comparison? So and then I started. mentioning names of other people like. Oprah Winfrey is like other 20 names.
>> And so then he made me write like 10. things what do you do I like from other. people and and then he made me like now. imagine like these 10 qualities together. you have. >> Oh. >> and then you are so do you think that. this guy is the player right? Who. whoever will have these 10 qualities is. that player. >> Now imagine yourself that you are that. player. Forget there's whoever just see. yourself and he made me w before every. podcast he was like 10 minutes before. watch yourself.
>> be that very relaxed be that friend be. that fun guy be that sensitive guy. whatever you think that whoever is that. >> and I started doing that in five or 10. podcast after that. >> just change like now I don't there are. times where you get little jitters. >> but I don't change. >> okay. >> like you won't see that. >> so to see yourself as the player is so. important. Right. Yeah, it is. >> that even if you're just talking, it. feels like you become a different person.
if you start in your head feeling like. you're. best. >> Yeah. Your best version like it it. doesn't have to be that. >> Yeah. I feel is a social media problem a. lot now. Social media problem like. because of social media everyone's. available. It's human problem.
comparison. Now all of a sudden there's like, oh, he's doing that fitness routine, she's. doing that, he's doing that, that diet, she's doing that. Then it's just such a battle. What do you want and what your body is. very different? Yeah. >> Like it's not necessarily what I do. Maybe some same person in the team will.
not be able to do and what she does I. can't do it. >> True. >> Though we both play the same sport do. the exact thing but it's a very. different thing. So I as you said I mean. what you your best is should be your. best only. >> Yeah. >> And what is your routine should be your. routines only. >> Fair. >> It can't be. >> Have you compared yourself to anyone. ever in your head? So I didn't compare but I looked up to. melaning quite a lot growing up. She's. she was Australian captain and when I.
came into the scene she was like I mean. she was like consistent at some some. next level and I saw her. >> flicking bowlers for sixes and at that. time women's cricket not many would hit. sixes. It's changed a lot now but time. it was like a new thing and I saw that. and I was like wow man like I want to. bat like that someday. So not like a. comparison but it was like a goal that. you know you want to do something. So. you want that one quality of her.
>> Huh. I mean. >> like not become a player like her but. pick up that maybe that consistent. flicking ability of her. Was it was it. like that? >> Mostly her like she she would like walk. the talk kind of a person. Yeah. You. know like that's a pretty cool thing. I. played with her again. we had we were. playing for Manchester Super Jans and I. was like wow. we opened together and I was like okay. nice I didn't show it to her that okay. you know I've been I I played it pretty. cool but uh but but yeah I was very.
happy and excited about it I was like. wow I grown up watching her and now I'm. batting with her. >> so now see you felt excitement a little. bit. >> you don't feel a lot of excitement. >> 10 minutes I said 10. I was like. once you once I entered the field and we. start playing. let me name like four top emotions of. human beings and you tell me what do you. feel about them like what's your.
definition of let's say anger like what. do you think about anger. >> what do you do when you're angry. >> be quiet. >> Uh Jimmy somewhere said, "No, you give. silent treatment.". >> Ah, yeah. Be quiet. I'm very quiet. >> Which is worse. >> I don't know how it is for people. >> Yeah. But be quiet. I mean, I feel like. because I feel it's a Cancerian trait. that if you get angry, you could talk.
something which would hurt the other. person a lot. So rather than hurting that person, just. be quiet. >> Have there been in instances where. >> Yeah. Yeah. every third. fourth day something or the other. happens and I feel like hitting a person. and I'm just like. >> I take half an hour I'll just be quiet. about it and just I like after half an. hour see most of the emotions after half. an hour you're neutral about it. >> that half an hour is the hardest to like. manage.
but yeah I do get angry but. >> not like somewhere where I lose what I'm. saying I always want to be in control of. what I'm saying. >> but have you blasted where you're like. you've just And you ended up hurting. other person. So you realize that I. should. >> I could do that. I could do that. >> You must have. >> I have. I have done in my life. >> That's why you know it. You're aware of. it. That's I know I could and I have. done that in life and I don't think I. should like there are times where of. course you you do that. You're not like. any you're human still.
>> Yeah. But and then I realize that the. friend who I've done that to just like. gone and then I just feel like and the. next moment you start feeling guilty. that oh you made them go through that. what you said. >> So that's when that makes me feel guilty. that you know I put them in that sort of. a space. >> So then I like then I kind of got it. covered. Mhm. >> But yeah, anger is something no one. resonates with me, but I have a lot of. anger. But I just I'm very controlled.
person. >> Do you channelize that for a better. thing? >> Only with batting only. >> But no, but do you feel. like anger makes me worse person? Like. it it makes me worse. So I go I'm silent. and then I sleep because I know I can. end up hurting someone right but there. is a friend of mine who gets extremely. angry and then starts writing what are. the things which triggered him. >> that what was the trigger.
and he's become much better person. because he's like the things which used. to make me angry or offend me doesn't. anymore. >> because some pattern maybe picked up. from somebody. >> so like normally randomly I wouldn't get. angry on normal people but like your. friends and your close people you get. angry in a certain way. >> at at moments I've realized it's better. to be quiet and not do right wait. nothing just just. >> take a ch.
my worst moments or anger anger side of. my channelizing is watching Mahabharat. like I mean I'm a big mahar fan like for. me. >> what Krishna g says is like rules of. life types I'm that sort of a person. like my spirituality is like going by. his preachings like that is my way of. spirituality. So. >> so yeah I watch some episode of. Mahabharat and then sleep. >> What triggers you to get angry like what.
makes you angry? >> Anything? >> Tell me what's. >> when you're driving and someone just. crosses you for no reason. >> So you're short tempered like that. >> Yeah, I can be but again I don't. necessarily say anything but. >> but in your head. >> In your head. Yeah. Like. I'm like that way. So So you you get. angry but again. all of a sudden you're like.
you got angry. >> Yeah. I got angry in my head like I told. >> outside your zen like inside you're like. full chaos going on. >> Huh? There can be anger. Yeah. I that's. what I'm said. uh no one resonates with. me but I'm a very like I could get very. angry and I'm like don't take panga with. me type person. >> like till I don't come in your way don't. come in my way. >> Do you take revenge? >> Huh? I won't take revenge but.
like I'll not forget it also but I won't. do like bad things to that person nor I. will not that way but I I'm pretty much. like in my head I'm like you don't like. till you're not coming in my I won't. bother you but don't just come randomly. follow me on in my way then I'm little. kissa. >> do you easily forgive people. >> I forgive But I don't forget that's the. problem. A but so XYZ let's say if.
somebody made you angry and hurt you. that person won't matter to you after a. while. emotional trigger person if somebody. comes in you like. so emotional triggers are not there it's. just like. but. like I won't spoil anyone's life. >> What do you feel about sad as an.
emotion? Grief, sadness. >> Go quiet. >> Tell me. Yeah. >> Like if you're sad, I think you just for. me I feel I just go quiet. Yeah. For a. very long time, I could be quiet and. just within myself. Quiet is not like. mon but quiet. Yeah. M. >> and. >> and for you know what I don't like. biggest thing is that other person. understanding that I'm sad is one big.
thing I hate sympathy. >> any sort of sympathy oh like you're sad. oh what happened you know that sympathy. means again how do I explain like you. know people will come and like. if you're sad about it people will feel. that you're sad about it and something. big has happened and then they'll come. and give sympathy so my life rule is. that I don't want to be that person so. that I don't get sympathy because I hate. it. I'm like no I can manage like.
I'm fine like you know even if I've got. doubt I've had a bad whatever world cup. or I've had whatever time don't look at. me as I don't like to portray myself. like that I'm strong like not for the. world also I'm just I I mean I'm strong. I don't want that like. Some people are naturally like but.
sometimes you know you maybe it's okay. for them to for people to ask them are. you okay I don't like it. >> I don't like this questions are you okay. >> why don't you like it. >> yeah but I somehow I've never liked it. as a person also I I don't know I just. feel like I've lived my life a certain. way And I don't think I'm answerable or. all this sympathy kind of a thing like. you know you just you just know like I.
don't know it's a very weird thing but I. I can't take it that's why I never like. that's why I never speak in interviews. also around family issues or family. issues like the rent. >> I mean I'm not that I'm just like look. at me like a happy soul look at me like. that like get inspired by the game not. by the story like know that sort of a. person I am. >> fair but there's why don't you like when.
people look at the sad part. >> because there's so much nice. >> which is people are celebrating you for. the nice things but if somebody wants to. know about the sad part. see that I feel is um for me and my. family to take and for my near ones to. take like. like tomorrow we become best friends and. we going out on coffee and I I still.
hide everything and not tell you. everything. I I'll be an open book. Well, >> the world you don't want. >> But h I mean what's the point, right? >> I don't want any extra likes or these. things because of that like I would. rather have people liking my work, my. game, my cricket. >> which is true. >> and that is what I have chose for people. to know. That's the life I have chose to. like I can't hide my cricketing part of.
it. So if you have asked me anything. around cricket cricketing mindset how I. feel that's not something which I would. hide also because that's part of my life. which I have chose that people has to. know because I've chose to play cricket. for India so it has to happen but the. other part of it I don't think that. that's something I have chose to share. >> Fair. >> Yeah. Like you know that's why I never. said any story around my growing up or. anything. >> Crazy. Do you enjoy fame.
>> on ground? Yes. Like. like on the field when I go and there. are there's like full full sold out. stadium and they are chanting my name or. chanting India and we're playing. that's a very nice feeling. It's like I. look around and I'm like wow women's. cricket has reached here and it's it's a. nice feeling like to be fair I like I. love it. >> and that's where I enjoy it the most. when I'm batting I'm taking stance and.
people are chanting my name that's it I. feel like oh wow this is cool. once I'm off that boundary rope I'm. extremely shy like I'll be shy in an. elevator I'll be shy in a cafe if I'm. sitting in a cafe and someone if I hear. from someone. I'm like. You know, like I'm very shy. So. >> when people come to you, do you get. awkward? >> I very very awkward. I don't know how to. have a conversation. I still don't know.
>> You're like, "Yeah, ma'am, please like. picture." And then you're like, "Oh, bye.". You know, I'm like, "Hello." Or like if. at all I'm eating or something, I'll be. like, "No, I'll give once I'm done. eating. I can't eat and give you food.". Do you like leave your food and just. stand and then click and or you finish? >> I'm not that nice. >> You're not that nice. >> I mean to say like Yeah. I just feel. like someone's eating food. They're also. humans. Let them eat and we can I'm not. like rude.
>> I just like request key I'm eating and. we'll finish and. >> but yeah, I'm very shy. So once I'm off. that rope, it's like two personalities. there. I would like Yes. Nice. This is. cool. Once I'm off it and signing. autographs and all also in stadium. itself, it's like. I mean I'm not like I'll be shy around. it. So yeah, there's two I don't know if. I enjoy fame or not. So it's like 50/50. kind of a thing.
>> There's there's a there's an athlete. self and there's. >> yeah athletes Miti Mahan the cricketer. I think she loves it. The person I don't. think she. >> she's too keen on it. uh much more. private than than frustration. I only know emotions which are there in. that movie that animated movie. >> Jimmy made me watch it. >> inside. Inside Jimmy made me sit and.
watch it because I'm not an animation. person. Sit and watch it. >> Was it good? Did you like it? >> It's cute. It's nice. >> So many people talk about I've never. seen it. >> Oh, I mean so many emotions, you know. You should watch it. It's nice. >> No, but it's cute. It's emotions. explained in a very cute way. >> Okay. >> So, have you felt frustrated like. frustration, helplessness? >> Not really. Not like for a very long.
period of time. >> Not even at the time when you were going. through an injury and you couldn't you. didn't know will the next when will the. next day come? 30 40 minutes again like. maybe 30 minute rule maybe a day or. something when you're injured you've got. an ACL and I was like okay yeah I. remember. >> so we the contracts were introduced for. the first time for women in 2016. >> and um that's when I got the first house. which was like 3 BHK sangi and I bought.
that house and in a month's time I got. injured I was like oh god. like I don't what to do. I had ACL at. that time and I was like how would I pay. this thing back and all of that stuff. and um then I felt for that that. restlessness of that 2 three days and I. was like he kept going the world cup is. in 5 months let's just focus to get fit. let's see what happens after that at. least.
Like once you've stared there, you don't. worry to come back there. Like when you. worry when you're always there and then. you're just like, "Oh, you don't know. that life." So I was like. all this happened at 2017 World Cup. happened. >> and I somehow I got fit and I managed. God kind of helped me in all my ways. Got fit. We played that World Cup. It.
went well. Women's cricket was. introduced in India. All of a sudden. like women's cricket was a household. name and all of those things happened. I. come back. and we got prize monies and all of that. and I ended up buying the other flat. like how God like changed the whole kind. of a thing. It's like 6 months back I. was like. flat. But after 6 months, I ended up. buying one flat adjacent to that one. Just I said that's a God's way of doing.
things. >> Nice. What was the hardest. moment or hardest night for you. in your life? >> Um, hardest night. I'm thinking. probably. like some world cups only like we've.
lost and I've not slept. I'll I'll only speak about cricket. anyways. Yeah, I mean yeah it has to I. think even co I think is pretty. difficult time. >> What happened? Nothing happened in such. it's just that whole stuff was happening. when we not as cricket is not in one. room for a very long time like you know. it's very vulnerable place you've always. been on road we've had something to now.
all of a sudden everything's at halt. first one month you enjoyed family. everything and then. >> all of a sudden there's so many uh. everyone's dying around you something is. happening so many vulnerabilities and. then that fear of losing out on your own. people. I think that was that whole two. three months were pretty like difficult. times. You just kept. like. you know it was just a very especially. the second wave. Yeah. my uh Bhav's um.
like mom she lost we lost her in Indor. and uh. so it was a pretty like hard time for. and she was I mean she's pregnant with. Rein so it was like yeah we lost and. that whole thing happened when I was. also there and then it just felt like. after that for six seven days it was. like a little yeah so that I feel those. times were a little vulnerable huh like. in general Not even that that moment but.
even every time you got a call from a. friend that someone's friend is in. hospital like something is happening and. the bed is not there what to do and it's. like a very like you didn't know what to. do so I think that was pretty. >> I would say a difficult time for all of. us for me I mean I I didn't know what to. like do and. >> for me co was everyone talks about it. and personally it was not as hard even. and I saw my dad got co and then we had.
to like you know he had to go to the. hospital and then he's a diabetic. patient. >> so for you know that whole hype. injection something which was there. >> lung collapse and all of that was going. on. >> and everyone was making it a thing that. this is scary what's I was optimistic. So maybe somehow because my dad got it.
and I was optimistic obviously this is. just. >> he'll come back he'll come back and I. saw him coming back and then he got fine. so I became optimistic throughout. >> maybe. >> and we didn't see anyone touchwood. >> like nearby at least with in my. immediate family we didn't see anyone. >> a lot of people got co and they got. saved. >> okay. >> so for me it was Mhm. >> And not as hard. >> as other people. >> No. Yeah. But in general, the whole time.
was very hard. >> Yeah. It was like you put out, you see. social media, everything's like. something's happened to someone. So it's. just like those five six months only. just felt very I would say I would maybe. those nights I would not sleep the best. >> Yeah. because you're with and is it. like who gets to know the first whenever. something's hard with you?
>> Maybe my brother. >> You share everything with him? >> Yeah, I share most of the things with. him. So, >> how old is he? >> He's 4 years older to me. >> So, not that like it's almost very. close. >> Same like we me and my brother. My. brother's a younger brother. >> Okay. But four years. >> same like my he's four years elder to. me. So he's I think I speak to him only. like what is like happening like after a. few days of thinking by myself and. trying to figure out my solution and. then I'm like okay fine mostly him.
Yeah. >> Okay. I have uh okay so I usually ask. this question to everyone is what is one. advice nobody should follow? I don't think only you should follow any. I think you should only follow what life. teaches you. like. >> What do you mean? But there's So you. feel like people should not follow any. advice? No, >> no, they can't follow advices. But. >> what is one advice that you hate? Like. you're like it's a advice.
>> Why you thinking so much? How can I not be? I can't be chill about. my batting, right? I can't be chill. about cricket. >> Nice. >> I mean, it's like. that's something which I feel is stupid. >> Nice. Very nice. >> Well, that's the only thing which I feel. is stupid. Otherwise, I feel like of. course I also listen to I love podcasts.
I listen to a lot of podcasts. like. video necessarily I wouldn't watch but. >> the podcast would be on. >> and I do take a lot of advices. I loved. Michael Phelps stuff with you and what. he spoke about how he's working with. suicidal. >> I think people and how he's helping them. all of those things. So I do believe in. taking advices but you should not take. advice because they're successful. >> You should take advice because they're. relatable to you. >> Interesting. Like there might be four.
cricketers. who talk and they're great. They've been. successful. I should also know who I'm. relating more with, right? It should be. relatable. I can't be a different. person. And if I'm trying to be different person. just because that person is like that is. wrong. I want to be that person. I. understand. So yeah, that's one thing. which I think everyone should stop like. they should not if they're relating to. me then listen to me otherwise just. don't. >> interesting. I like that first line that.
you said. That is such a fresh advice to have. Such a fresh take. Okay, you can think about it half an. hour and you're overthinking that and. people coming because you're not part of. that. >> You might not like people can still tell. that.
I am defined by what I do there. >> True. >> And you are telling me not to think. about that and just enjoy. So that's. >> true. Last question is what's. so we have a wall it's called cost of. ambition. M cost of ambition. >> ambition. So like I love asking really. successful people. >> what cost have they paid for their. ambition. The question for you is. what cost what is the cost of becoming.
mand. less of family time that's the only cost. I think otherwise I'm pretty happy. like I missed school I missed college. and all of those things are there but. I'm not I am happy but like lesser. home time less of time with family and. lesser time with your friends is. something which is I think cost of where. you are because we travel so much.
>> Does it bother you less time with your. family? >> Yeah, it it does bother me in a way. where when you're there you just want to. spend a few more days but ambition takes. over. I mean like you just want to get. back to work as well. So but luckily I. mean my parents are like they travel a. lot with me again. They come with me. My. brother comes a lot. So I'm around in. and around them quite a lot. So which is. nice. If that was also not happening. then I would have felt even worse. But.
uh but yeah sometimes that just one. regular life without a suitcase. get up to a same place have a set. routine and have set of coffee and you. know it's a very distant dream for us. you know it's like. >> it's because we we don't do that a lot. and for me like. >> I feel like that's poster tab for sure. whenever but I think that's something. like just no plain simple life nothing. fancy around it just normal. just wake up without an alarm. It's like.
you would privilege not to have like. wake up without an alarm, do your stuff. like cook your food and those small. small little joys of life you I mean. it's hard to get. >> which is. >> but I'm very happy having said that. >> but I'm very happy where I am but yeah. that's something which sometimes you. miss. >> a part of me miss at least now in last. because from the time. >> in last 2 three years time time I've. crossed 28 28.
I don't care. >> you. Thank you so much for doing this. Thank you for opening up, for sharing so. many things, for. >> for actually thinking with me during the. time on so many things. It was really. fun having you. Thank you so much. >> Thank you for having me. >> Hi Raj, nice to meet you. >> Hello. >> Hello. Nice to meet you. >> Have a seat. a few podcasts I think. Michael Phelps I've seen a little like. the snippets I've seen is very nice very.
inspiring. >> I love doing athlete athlete mindset. kind of podcast in my head I'm like this. is a game for me I'm an athlete here and. I need to train. >> enough to win. >> because we also have rankings we also. have certain things it's like this is a. game that I'm playing. >> okay. >> and I relate with a lot of athletes and. that's why all the athlete podcast that. I do is like lot around personal and. mindset way more than about 100 cup mari. winner cup first cup all that I do like. I love what you're thinking thank you.
