X-MEN 97 EPISODE 9 BREAKDOWN! Easter Eggs & Details You Missed!

welcome back to new rock stars I'm Eric. Boss and this is a breakdown of X-Men 97. episode 9 tolerance is extinction part. two these Mad Men actually did it to the. frame they recreated the comic panel. from X-Men Volume 2 number 25 from 1993. when Magneto infamously pulls out. Wolverine atam antium from a skeleton. and you thought Snick and bamp were fun. sound effect words wait till you get a. load of. sh it's another epic episode of X-Men 97. that we must break down frame by frame. for Easter eggs and animation dets that.

you might have missed you know what I'm. going to do something different with. this breakdown in lead with the four. deeper thematic undercurrents that. creators hit throughout this episode and. I'm so glad that I took my time with. this episode to pick up on these okay. one what ends up happening with. Wolverine two the arrival of onslaught. three the return of the Phoenix and four. time Loops so as we go through this. breakdown I want you to keep those four. in mind the twist with Wolverine the. arrival of onslaught the return of the. Phoenix and time Loops okay you ready. let's go okay the very first thing we. hear before even the opening titles is a.

previously on X-Men and whose voice is. that previously on X-Men yes that's Cal. Todd as Wolverine this episode opens and. closes with Wolverine they want this. mystery to be in our head the entire. episode why do we hear Wolverine at the. beginning it's because of what happens. to him okay going on to the opening. titles we never skip these why because. there's always cool little changes and. in this one storm has finally returned. the character title cards since her. departure back in episode 2 and now we. see she's wearing her black outfit with. her hair fully regrown since regaining.

her powers in episode 6 this was her. original look when the character was. introduced in giant size X-Men number. one in 1975 and then another new detail. that I barely caught but I really love. this normally in the final charge of. Charles's X-Men versus Magneto's forces. the camera just kind of whips past some. innocent humans caught in the middle. running from Sentinels but now notice. those humans are pink skinned infected. Androids part of bastion's race of prime. Sentinels and that includes the. Letterman jacket guy that we saw in. episode 8 in Harmony Pennsylvania so are. these really fleeing or are they on the. hunt did all these infected Androids.

willingly submit to bastian's goo dip to. give themselves a leg up against mutant. kind or were some unwillingly Infected. making them victims and worthy of trying. to cure okay the sun rises on the trees. of Westchester and on the ruins of the X. Manion the x- Manion is always destroyed. throughout the X-Men animated series run. we need to just keep Colossus on. retainer to be like the groundskeeper. contractor you broke it again I'm going. to have to call in overtime here but. Charles awakens in bed with his hand. outstretched beside him as someone who.

spent several months in a long-distance. relationship doing this every morning. when my future wife worked in a. different city I can tell you that this. guy is longing for his Shar bird Queen. Leandra who used to occupy this spot at. night just notice how the Newton. Brothers score these opening shots of. Charles with just these dark for boing. tones and you can sense the darkness. Rising within him from this moment. on so much he sacrificed so much pain he. suppressed Onslaught is certainly.

stirring meanwhile Magneto stands on. these rocky shores of this island. surrounded by cargo boats that have been. deactivated from his Global EMP shortly. after this he raises asteroid M from the. ocean as when we last saw that asteroid. in season 4 episode 4 Sanctuary part two. it crashed into one of Earth's oceans. and Magneto must have always known where. it landed and I just kind to love this. image of all these dead boats with cargo. containers reminding me of the boats. that mored up to Liberty Island during. the blip in Avengers endgame that is the. kind of post-apocalypse itic State Earth.

is currently in but like even worse. we'll explain why in a second meanwhile. in Harmony Pennsylvania the former human. Prime Sentinels are just Frozen in place. after Magneto's blackout and Bastion is. cradling his mother reminder that last. episode we did confirm that bastion's. mother was the same bar waitress in 1959. from the '90s Run episode one man's. worth and nimrod's Tech was left behind. and slithered into the ear of the man in. the leather jacket who helped Wolverine. in the barf fight of that episode and. then that guy and this waitress ended up. falling in love and produced Sebastian. it's it's the same characters X-Men 997.

showrunner bod Deo joked that bastion's. mother's name is Martha bastion's. teardrop dries on his mother's chin so. it seems like her flesh is not fully. metal it's like a kind of skin tissue. it's just crazy to think that Wolverine. and the rest were slashing through these. primes and then we saw those primes. reassembling their severed heads in. their arms and yet there's still hope to. restore them as normal humans okay. Jubilee and Roberto who apparently. escaped from their arresting primes now. flee members of the fooh who are pissed.

off about the power grid being shut down. if you listen closely you hear these. humans yelling you turn off the power. this is what you get and you thought. josha was bad just do you wait dude it. was a massacre it was like you thought. 911 or pulse Massacre was bad just wait. till you see we did to you we need to. lock up this person right now and then. another person says too bad the. hospitals ain't got no power which is an. insane thing to say because after that. shitty OBGYN refused to deliver Scott. and mine's baby in episode 2 it's not. like hospitals consider mutants as part. of their hypocritic oath but you may. remember in the opening titles of every. episode we Roberto chased down an alley.

and running into a chainlink fence which. is the same framing of Jubilee from the. 90s run and now we see both of these. kids chased down an alley there's no. fence at the end of this one but these. poor kids are always just getting chased. down dead ends now I assume the. animators might have just been reusing. character designs but the mob includes. the Letterman jacket guy and the Kurt. Cain looking guy with the blue vest whom. we just saw with Frozen android forms in. Harmony Pennsylvania in the middle of. that street but and Roberto are saved by. storm and Forge forge's mechanical leg. has a jet Thruster function to slow his. Falls so I assume when the black bird.

crashes later he'll probably be okay and. I do just have to point out the way. Jubilee hugs storm it just kind of. nuzzles in and looks down and realize. what she's nuzzling in and continues to. nuzzle and storm is like it's okay so. Charles's yellow hover chair is wrecked. in a beam where it's like damn I'm glad. I wasn't sitting in this when this. happened we see he's now back in his. classic Green Jacket his blue and black. striped tie his Argyle blanket with a. normal wheelchair which he was wearing. in the portrait that recreated Uncanny. X-Men number one from 1963 Bastion lays. his mother down with the painting The. the final dream over the bed which she.

showed the others last episode it. depicts a three-headed master mold in. Prime Sentinels floating like Dark. Angels lording over mutant slaves and if. you look closely those mutants there's. one with wings like Angel there's one. with a tail like Nightcrawler and. there's one emitting optic blast that I. think is supposed to be Cyclops and. Bastion says finally quiet mother as he. turns to the electric pole utility box. outside because remember last episode we. learned that Bastion as a kid could hear. machines telepathically and specifically. one of these boxes haunted him from. outside during his class but now that.

Magneto shut down the grid all is silent. which seems to have kind of done a favor. for Bastion in that way Scott and. Charles argue about whether Charles was. right to have freed Cyclops from the. legacy of taking over the X-Men and to. just for Cyclops into a normal retired. life perhaps that was a mistake because. just like you I'm right back here. interesting how Charles is echoing the. words from Val Cooper's speech in. episode 8 really I just had the most. profound sense of deja vu as if past. present and future didn't matter and. never had.

because we always end up in the same. ugly place I feel like there's going to. be a deeper meaning to Deja Vu present. past and future and this idea of looping. back to right back here time Loops Rogue. wakes up to her half brother. Nightcrawler tras I did he much has. happened forine tras. survived so did. Remy yeah Rog is saying tras I did he as. if she's about to say I killed him did.

he die but Nightcrawler steadies her. trembling hand and he's about to say. Magneto survived Genosha too but Rogues. mind goes first to Remy it's almost like. the state she was in in episode 7 was so. rage filled that she was just blacking. out for that entire episode stormforge. Jubilee and Roberto return to the. X-Mansion and I love how the animators. add these blur lines on Forge and. BEAST's clasp to show the smooth speed. of the gesture blur lines are added to. show motion a lot of Animation actually. if you pause some early sentence. episodes you see some really freaky face. but this is something that they don't.

really do in Xmen 97 because for scenes. like this they often just stay true to. the more stuttered movement and limited. frame rate from the 9s run but these. blur lines add some swiftness and make. it look like Arnold Schwarzenegger and. Carl weather's iconic handshake and. Predator you son of a Forge you. son of a Beast observes that. forge's augmented Prosthetics remain. functional despite Magneto's blackout. this whole thing rigged together an. electrostatic deflector ages ago Oh Me. Oh My oh my friend thought about it.

thought about it huh so there's still a. loose end here with forge's photo with. Dr gotfried Adler and Bastion suggesting. technology like the mutant ability. control collar and other things Forge. uses might be under the influence of. Bastion and Forge here saying only a. cryptic I thought about it makes us. wonder what else he has in his head also. we still need confirmation if Bishop's. friend in the future who he said could. cure Nathan was actually Forge and who. Cable's Rebel contact was who knew to.

check the town of Harmony Pennsylvania. either way time travels in our future. and we got to figure out what forge's. role is in it along with Bishop so. during the debrief we see photos of. Harmony Pennsylvania and Mator and a. cash for gold shop with mutants or. Monsters written on the top of it and on. an overturned car hum eaten something. probably blaming mutants for bastion's. nanotech virus that turned so many into. Prime Sentinels but whoever wrote this. is just getting the sides of this war. all wrong storm says that she can feel. the Earth's magnetic field dying and she. says when the sun sets tonight it sets.

on the future so wo I think they are. acknowledging that Earth without its. magnetic field layer would see its. atmosphere eroded by solar winds and we. would all eventually die storm doesn't. really specify that but according to new. Rockstar's resident science nerd Berg if. Earth actually lost its magnetic field. our atmosphere would expand and heat up. and then we would fry and suffocate so. essentially Magneto doomed all of us. Wolverine says the man just declared war. on the whole planet his day ends one way.

m a very foreshadowing snicked because. this episode ends one way a splash page. foreshadowing the same adamantium. getting pulled out Cyclops splits the. group into team blue and team gold which. are the X-Men colors with storm and Jee. leading the gold team to the Galapagos. Islands to shut down bastion's. headquarters now the galpagos islandss. are a world famous ecotourism. destination for their geographic. isolation and unique biodiversity and it. is where Charles Darwin studied finches. and other species to develop his. evolution theories for the Origin of. Species which inspired Nathaniel Essex.

aka Mr Sinister back when both of these. men were contemporaries in 19th century. England and season 5 episode 9 descent. it should also be noted that the. Galapagos are located off the coast of. what country kids Ecuador which in the E. for extinction Comics is where Cassandra. Nova located the master mold in the. jungle and deployed that wild Sentinel. on josha Beast says learning how to. safely remove Sentinel nanotech will. take years but Forge and I believe we. can restore the prime sentinel's innate. Humanity so this is just still so crazy. me I don't know how Sentinel nanotech.

could remake flesh so that heads and. limbs could be severed and then refused. and for that same flesh to be reversed. to normal without any kind of damage to. the body I think beast is just. acknowledging it's not really possible. we need a Time Loop here Roberto in. these scenes is finally suited up as one. of the X-Men with a yellow and dark blue. suit which is sunspots original first. X-Men suit in the comics Chris. claremont's the New Mutants look Jubilee. is still wearing her black and pink. number that she got at the mall last. episode which is from her more recent. Jubilee in Wolverine Comics which is. post mday meanwhile Rogue in this scene.

and in the following scene at the lake. wears Remy's high collar trench coat. which remember he was not wearing At the. josha Gala because he had switched into. the white tuck but Rogue must have. salvaged it from the wreckage and kept. it so that she could breathe in the. smell of those freshly deep fried Benet. and remember it but underneath she wears. her full green suit with a trim that. comes up the center and forms a hood and. a lime green gloves and collar similar. to the suit she wore in her very first. appearance in Avengers annual number 10. in 1981 which had a light green trim. instead of a white one and this is the.

time when she wasn't yet a member of the. X-Men and it sets up her switching back. to Magneto's side in this episode. Charles says that he tried to recruit a. young Sebastian to join his school but. his anti-mutant mother slammed the door. in his face in another world Bastian. would be in this portrait yes I love. that storm is sitting behind the globe. as she says this and in the one man's. worth episodes we saw storm in another. reality with Wolverine fighting on that. night in 1959 where we first met that. bar waitress and parts of nimrod's tech. were left behind to create who we now. know as bad B Forge tells storm that.

Bastion is a technopath and Beast is. tinkering with this pneumonic Scrambler. that shut down Jean's Powers when she. was dark Phoenix and he's referring to. the season 3 dark Phoenix arc when this. same device was used on Gan gray but. Beast wants to go further if bastion's. abilities operate like our mutations we. can use neutralizer technology to. permanently disable his control of. prime okay no neutralizer technology I. love how the second beast says the words. neutral Iz her technology before storm.

Thunders up notice how her eyes open. very slightly wider as she registers. this is the same Tech that took her. powers she's kind of. like so Magneto arrives and lowers. asteroid M over the lake and I love how. you could see the aurora borealis light. in the sky surrounding it to show. Magneto temporarily activating part of. the planet's magnetic field to hover. this asteroid and to show that he is. capable of reversing it if he wants. Magneto disses lilandra as Charles's Shi. are bird Queen like she's some kind of.

new girlfriend who's really into. crystals that Charles ran off with and. then suddenly has a lot of thoughts. about the itinerary for the annual guys. trip we all know a guy like that and if. you don't you're that guy Magnus. describes josha to Charles as the vision. Charles pitched to him in a bar when. they were younger men which Magneto told. Rogue about in episode 6 but then. Magneto breaks our hearts I promised a. boy a future free of fear only to watch. his frightened eyes be vaporized inside. his tiny skull because he believed in me.

in the dream you had me sell oh God he's. talking about leech the moment the wild. Sentinel Kaiju Zapped them in episode 6. Magneto had told him at the time iak. ofst which is German for do not be. afraid and it was the last thing leech. heard but now I'm asking did leech speak. German was Magnus really telling himself. that Rogue agrees with Magneto's. argument and leaves Remy's trench coat. on Charles's shoulder Trea him like he's. a coat rack she reminds the others that.

none of them were on josha the day it. fell who dies next Professor Jean been. there done that who knows where Bishop. is and Hell morph was barely on the team. 30 minutes before we tossed them to the. Wolves okay so a couple things to pull. out of that first a reminder of Bishop's. absence this season does not want us to. forget about Bishop last episode we. learned that he was bumped from the time. stream while he was bringing baby Nathan. to the Future and Nathan arrived at that. future alone so I feel like Bishop may. be in the aess of time with a mortise.

but either way Bishop is coming back but. the morph line is so mean considering. morph died in the second episode of The. yellow one actually appears to be based. on the Marvel Legends toy but there's. also a blue one that looks bulkier and. more fortified maybe this is one. designed for battle behind that is the. Vintage 1991 Wolverine red and yellow. mutant cycle and it's the claws on the. front it's got pop wheelie action and it. was released by toy Biz and of course. toy Biz was the company of Ike Pearl. mutter and it was this company that. bought Marvel in the mid99s and led to. Marvel's Ventures into film and TV. eventually leading to Marvel Studios but. then in the back and on the right that. fancy car looks like Charles Xavier's.

blue Rolls-Royce from the very first. Uncanny X-Men number one in 1963 the red. convertible on the lower Center looks. like rogue's car from the Unstoppable. Juggernaut in the Cure episodes it's. normally convertible but it looks like. the top is up here and then on the far. left barely noticeable there's a. motorcycle with a flame pattern it's. Harley-Davidson this is what wolverine. drove throughout X-Men evolution which. is technically a different continuity. it's like the yast universe but like. they just put in a little Easter egg to. it here and I loved it and behind that. in the very far back on the left looks. like the dirt bikee that we saw in X-Men.

Cyclops and Marvel girl Jean Gray these. are from uncanny been number 39 in 1967.

these are definitely like the second. generation suits because they were part. of the original lineup in 1963 that's. what we see in the painting in Charles's. office but then we see it Wolverine's. brown and yellow suit from artist John. burn which first appeared in Uncanny. X-Men number 139 in 1980 and it's what. us like ' 80s and '90s kids recognize as. like the true wolverine look and then in. a later shot you can see rogue's. original 1981 suit there as well to the. right of Charles's tactical jumpsuit and. that tactical jumpsuit is what you see. him wearing and past missions by the way.

these suits were also worn by some of. the X-Men in the unaired pride of the. X-Men pilot which Bodo suggested. watching before this episode is homework. even though acknowledging that it's not. technically Canon to the other X-Men. stories that he's telling you can. actually find this whole episode on. YouTube Scott tosses his son a new suit. am I going to war or a circus what' you. expect black leather yes a direct shot. at the line and Brian Singer X-Men in. 2000 you actually go outside n. what would you prefer yellow spandex a.

line that has lived in infamy among fans. of X-Men ever since as these movies have. resisted putting Wolverine in a comic. accurate suit that is until this year's. Deadpool and Wolverine but the new suit. that Cyclops gives cable is actually. cable suit from Marvel versus Capcom 2. there's actually some really fun gaming. Easter eggs in this episode so Charles. chats with President Robert Kelly in an. astral plane version of the Oval Office. in under an hour civilization As We Know. It Ends in under an hour kind of sounds.

like president whitmore's speech an. Independence Day in less than an. hour aircraft from here will join others. from around the world so Nightcrawler. praised the rosary and Jubilee. disintegrates Roberto's business card. but the address on it read one Claremont. Avenue rition Brazil a reference to. Chris Claremont the comics writer most. responsible for the best X-Men story. lines and then the phone number is. 9071 982 so 97182. September 7th 1982 is Bo deo's birthday.

this date was also the release date of. Marvel graphic novel number four the New. Mutants which was the first appearance. of sunspot as they walk out to the black. birds we see morph is wearing a new suit. with these shoulder pads this is morph's. look from the Exiles in the shoulder. pads would normally be holding a cape. but I suppose they had a conversation. about this and they're like Nets as team. gold nears bastion's Island Bastion. senses them and deploys the Sentinels. and I love how Forge and Jean are white. knuckling on those sticks cable morph. and Beast are all bracing for P but. storm not worried at all she's sitting.

calmly with her legs crossed so storm. Parts ways with Jean and I love their. relationship this season because storm. here calls her this stronger a Survivor. a phoenix ah yes a phoenix which is just. so interesting coming from Storm who was. recently repowered through an Aven. entity the adversary and I kind of feel. like it could be a hint to Jean to. embrace her inner bird queen and I just. love the way they sign off make them. mind your weather sister and them. weather your mind the word play on this.

series is so good and I kind of feel. like when Marvel Studios writers are. writing these liveaction titles they're. afraid to put in lines like this but it. works so well it's clever and it's. theatrical and it's a bit campy but we. still love it because it's just so. intentional and great and use this. really great word play and if you just. have the performers commit to it it can. totally work okay so on the galpagos. island they find this ruined town with a. diner with letters missing from it so. that it forms die and then later we see. from the rooftop sign that this is deo's.

Diner another notd to x97 former. showrunner Bo Deo and by the way are we. going to feel weird having mentioned him. so much throughout the season if SL when. we find out why exactly he was fired H. who knows so morph makes is also happy. by morphing into Hulk morph smash he. says morph smash which either means. morph morphed into Hulk's speech. patterns and it just came out as morph. instead of Hulk kind of like ditto and. Pokemon who couldn't change his face or. morph is just cosplaying as Hulk and.

just having some fun now previously in. the '90s Run they could not call Hulk. out by name but they did have a danger. room Hulk robot that was technically. called large green Neanderthal robot so. Mr Sinister attacks Jean moving through. the shadows and he throws a truck at her. and he loved this he Glides in the. shadow formed beneath the truck and then. when Jee blows up this truck the light. cast from that explosion forms a shadow. behind her which Sinister then transfers. too very very cool animation here so he. taunts only I know where you end and. that. begins if you ask nicely I can tell you.

when I switched you I feel like this is. Sinister messing with us the viewers. because some of the flashback images in. episode 3 hinted that it could have been. as far back as season 1 episode 5 when. the switch happened which would have. meant that like for most of the entire. '90s run it was actually madine prior. not Jean Gray but I don't know this. genan graay seems to have a more Vivid. take on the season 3 Phoenix drama so. I'm guessing it was sometime after after. that Jean lifts the roof off the bowling.

alley depriving Sinister of his shadows. and when she sends him down the lane if. you listen closely they mixed in a. perfect strike sound effect even though. there were no bowling pins in that. one and I love how when Jean sends. bowling balls at Sinister when she. raises the Jukebox that's when he freaks. out scared also from the billiards table. three balls rise 54 and two and they zip. it Sinister in that order five then 14. then two not sure if there's any. significance to that numerically I just. wanted to point it out meanwhile The. Blue Team takes the other black bird to. asteroid M where Rogue in Sunspot find.

it empty forgetting that Nightcrawler. can teleport people on board if he has a. line of sight through that transparent. window Magneto's Throne is made of dead. Sentinels and I love that it's so metal. literally metal Wolverine charges first. and Rogue tackles him and then we get. this cool tracking shot where Cyclops is. running and firing an optic blast. running to the right to avoid Magneto's. tiles while Nightcrawler runs behind and. has to bamp to the right to make room. for one of Jubilee's plasmoids to fire. past him and then bamps again to avoid. Magneto tiles and then Roberto and. Jubilee start hurling fireballs and.

plasmoids at each other which kind of. feels like an inverse to their fun pyot. Technic dance in the club in episode one. of the Season Charles starts to lecture. Magneto but Magneto says in space no one. can hear you snark oh how I've waited to. say these two words to you old friend. shut up I love it Charles telepathically. tells Cyclops to knock Magneto's helmet. off so that he can blab again but really. so that he can hijack his body to repair. Earth and even Cyclops seems to think. that that isn't a good idea to merge.

these two powerful minds together. meanwhile morph pretends to be Sinister. but Bastion sees right through it and. morph fumbles the pneumonic Scrambler. and Beast tries to swing it to basan but. he loses it too so meanwhile Sinister. takes control of cable with a little red. diamond on his head Cable says he's a. world-class telepath like his real. mother and Powers up glowing super. bright for a few frames casting Cable in. these inverse colors in really cool way. that reminds me of the Pokémon animated. series whenever Pikachu would use. Thunderbolts but watch and listen. closely as Jean holds off this.

from the consciousness of Charles and. Magneto shortly after Magneto rips the. adamantium from wolver greine skeleton. causing Charles to become so unhinged. with anger that that anger mingled with. Magneto's anger and created this being. known as Onslaught that takes over. Charles's body but Onslaught becomes. active in the aftermath of the age of. apocalypse story line when he takes the. young Franklin Richards to rewrite. reality doing all kinds of horrible. damage and it takes the combined forces. of the Fantastic Four and the X-Men and. the Avengers to take take him down so I. think we're getting onslot but I think.

this finale will also use time loops and. bod Deo even confirmed it he did tweet. last week that time travel or Bishop. would not help them get out of that but. now interestingly after episode 9 he. tweeted some homework for the finale the.
