Boss and this is a breakdown of. severance season 2 episode 3 who is. alive of all the questions you could. have burned into your retinas to ask. your any why stop there but no one gets. to hear this question anyway because. we're all too distracted by a goat. herting Brien of Tarth so many weird. creepy details and fascinating. expansions of the lore in clues that we. must break down here so let's analyze. this episode scene by scene for. everything you missed okay we opened. episode three on Harmony coel's car. parked on the side of a road along a. vast snow covered landscape looking like.

aene in Fargo we don't know exactly. where kir PE is located only that Mark W. broke a lease in Grand Rapids Michigan. to relocate to wherever KP is in the. opening seconds you actually hear a. variety of birds chirping and. squawking did I hear a seagull in there. there don't seem to be many nearby trees. I doubt Birds would be hopping around. the snow this time of year and I also. don't see any body of water to justify a.

seagull being around but I think we are. meant to be disoriented on where Kier is. harmony drives a white Volkswagen Rabbit. and yes White Rabbit is a direct homage. to lisis Carrol's Alice's Adventures in. Wonderland a surrealist children's work. that inspired cult reality twisting. media of all kinds like the Matrix. follow the White Rabbit and lost one of. the Dharma stations being the Looking. Glass and yes in the season 2 premere. Lumin stop motion animation video we saw. a couple of white rabbits hopping beside. the pond by whatever that reindeer was. it was revealed in the episode 2 behind. the episode featurette that Harmony coel.

has been with Lumen since she was a girl. if she were to be cast out from this. system that she has been a part of since. she was a child once that's gone where. does she go so I'm now kind of seeing. Harmony as a sort of adult Alice if she. stayed in Wonderland betrayed by the. Queen of Hearts tried to leave and then. decided to go back and realize oh this. queen might actually kill me we hear the. stone roses 1994 song Love spreads and. according to guitarist John Squire this. song's lyrics were inspired by rosalin. Miles book The Women's history of the. world which examines the roles of women.

the representation and their power. throughout history that definitely puts. a relationship dynamic between Harmony. coobel and Helena Egan in a new light we. transition to Ay Mark prepping for the. day while looking at a framed photo of. his wife Gemma and we focus on Mark's. new digital wristwatch in season 1 we. saw that Mark had two different wrist. watches one for his Audi self and a. different one used by his inie recently. Ben Stiller teased that viewers weren't. focusing enough on Mark's Trey in his. locker which reminded some viewers that. in the very first episode of the series. when Mark first checks into work his.

wristwatch shows that it is the fourth. of whatever that month was but when he. checks out on that same workday it is. now the fifth which most of us just saw. as a production Gaff but some have. theorized that there could be other. floors of lumen that a third unseen. severed Persona of Mark has been. visiting in stretches of time in between. and we just haven't seen that third Mark. Persona yet I don't know if that's going. to be the case but I do love that theory. and we must talk about this in that. locker room Irving's Locker is number. four Helena's Locker is number 16 and. Dylan's Locker is number 2 3 which are.

three of the six numbers from Lost 4 8. 15 16 23 42 obviously the series was. deeply inspired by the mystery crafting. on the Lost series people have been. trying to figure out maybe Mark's Locker. number it seems like his locker is on a. stretch of the wall that has Locker. numbers 10 to 18 and he's in the middle. so maybe 15 and now I'm wondering if PD. could have been number eight leaving. number 42 the magic Douglas Adams number. that shows up in everything everywhere. at once and all kinds of other things. that could be some very important MDR. employee that we have met yet or it.

Mark being pulled out of his own head. with the red and the blue wires visible. now has greater meaning after this. episode this would be wiring involved in. Mark's reintegration procedure with the. five frequencies of brain waves any Mark. ever the Boy Scout thinks that printing. copies of sketches of Miss Casey's face. with missing is the best way to go about. this still giving Lumen I guess the. benefit of the doubt but I wonder who. drew this sketch was it Irving Irving. has some reservations about visiting o d. we got you.

thank you hel so I'm now even more. convinced that this is actually the Audi. Helena Egan pretending to be her innie. the forced hand touch with we got you to. me has the same kind of falseness of we. hear you of wasar royco in succession. and in episode two when we saw Helena go. into the elevator while we heard the. post descent ding for every other. character we did not hear it for. Helena yes it's not the doors closing.

that triggers it it's not The Descent. it's the ding sound effect that comes. after the initial descent that triggers. the switch from the Audi to the inie and. vice versa and since the camera lingered. on Helena's long descent after the door. closed for several seconds and we heard. no immediate ding as we did with the. other three I think the woman down on. the S floor is still Helena and the. behind the episode statements from Britt. laau and Dan Ericson support this. greatly Helena is someone who has to. wear a mask in front of people Helena.

has a very sheltered existence so I. think the experience of seeing another. version of herself that is so much more. free than she is is intriguing inspiring. and provocative I think it's a very. complicated moment for her because she. sees enies as subhuman yet heli is. appreciated and respected and loved in a. way that Helena never has been and. realizing that this character that you. saw as like a servant might actually be. living a richer life than you I think.

that that really affects her Mark talks. Helena through his plan to get Miss. Casey through the South stairwell door. that's a stairwell that heli R tried to. escape through in season 1 and these two. have this moment in the corner but. before they kiss notice how Mark turns. to look over his shoulder and we see him. at a distance from around a corner and. this is almost the exact angle that the. mystery blue suited figure was standing. behind Mark in the season 2 premiere. it's almost like he never got over that. paranoia that he felt from that moment. milch finds the bundle of blue balloons. for Mark that were left behind in the. season 2 premere they are all deflated.

except one balloon that keeps the whole. bunch afloat I just love that little. detail Irving tells Dylan that he was. able to recreate his Audi's paintings of. the exports Hall as it's later called. this episode but it's interesting that. he did not tell this information to Mark. or to heli r as if he doesn't trust. those two but he does trust Dylan. remember it was Irving who questioned. heli on why she'd have run into a. gardener at night Natalie meets milch in. his office offering a gift from the. board these inclusively re canonicalized. paintings andt to help you see yourself.

and cure our founder as Natalie steps. around him notice she creepily never. takes her eyes off of him and never even. blinks made me think that maybe somehow. the board could be seeing through her. literal eye holes milch sees these. paintings of Kier Egan rendered to be. black these are all based on paintings. that we saw in season 1 but are now race. swapped the Kier Egan portrait the. youthful convalescence of Kier Irv. actually quoted the handbook when he. looked at this one with Bert let not. weakness live in your veins cherished. workers drown it inside you rise up from. your deathbed and Sally Forth more.

perfect for the struggle and the third. one Kier invites you to drink his water. the original version of this hung over. the water fountains on the sever floor. Natalie says that milch will find the. whole Kier cycle and says that she. herself received a similar gift so. there's a lot to unpack here there is a. religious art tradition referred to as. Black Jesus that dates back to the early. 19th century when Robert Alexander young. in the Ethiopian Manifesto in 1829. referred to the coming of a black. Messiah there's also been quite a bit of. discourse and Research into Jesus. Christ's actual race and subsequent.

artistic depictions of him as fair. skinned being an example of historical. whitewashing so in response to that. various new modern displays have offered. alternative versions of Jesus as. different races to try to redefine Jesus. as just more of a universal figure. separately there have also been. instances of branches of Christianity in. America with 19th century historical. origin similar to what this show seems. to be saying about Kier Egan sects that. well into the modern era were openly. exclusionary against people of color who. then made awkward Outreach attempts. thereafter that feel kind of like this I.

just think there is something to be said. about Kier Egan being depicted in. artwork as a Union soldier punishing but. then forgiving Confederates and then. Natalie and milch being the employees to. be one over with this specific type of. gift and I think it's all meant to be a. commentary on lum's history as a company. passed down through a white family tree. but still on a mission to tap into some. Universal virtues in The Souls of all. people as they see it and to see oneself. in Kure seems like it's part of that. mission to reincarnate k Egan soul in a.

resurrected body of one of his. descendants using innate virtues and. tempers of all of its employees actually. head riter Dan Ericson seem to be. teasing something like this we still. don't know what Lumen actually does what. was it that Kier Egan told his children. so many years ago this is what we have. to do this is our purpose in life and. that his progyny have been working ever. since then to make it happen like we. still don't know the seed of that. mystery and let's not forget this creepy. Harmony's mother and that this breathing. tube belonged to her mother there are. some theories that Charlotte might still. be alive in Lumen or maybe Harmony is. working at Luben to try to resurrect her. dead mother I have a feeling that. Harmony's unhinged scream at mark from. behind her wheel was connected to this. backstory like maybe she hopes that Mark. completing Cold Harbor to complete the. resurrection of his dead wife Gemma. could lead to research that would allow.

the resurrection of her mother Charlotte. Mark and Helena walked down the same. hallway with the creepy motion sensor. lights that they went down and episode 5. of season 1 now Helena asks is that it. again if this were heli the any heli. From hel's perspective their visit to. the goat room would have just been a. couple of days before this I don't think. she would have asked Mark is that the. door for it the initial goat room looks. as it did before with the miniature barn. and grain silo the goat feeder before. was sitting on that and the fined in Hay. covered area with milk Towers hanging. from above but now now from a new angle.

we see a new part of the room with this. tiny little door and a corridor for the. goats to walk through again some aliceon. Wonderland Vibes here right like the. tiny door that Alice has to shrink down. to be able to access this poopy tunnel. leads to an indoor grassy Mound that all. looks like real grass and real shrubs if. this is indoors with no sunlight or. fresh air no sprinklers from what I can. see wouldn't the grass and plant life. die here do they have to bring in new. sod new Greenery is this whole room just. kind of a pop-up deal now remember. before that goat feeder told Mark that. the baby goats quote weren't ready to be.

taken and now these goats all seem to be. adolescent there's definitely some mom. goats in there again it really has been. less than a week since that I don't know. how fast goats age initially Mark and. hel don't notice the very creepy goat. man watching them I think he's just like. blending in with the other goats but it. is kind of like a scarecrow come to life. and we meet Lauren played by gwendelyn. christe Brien of Tarth from Game of. Thrones and Captain fasma and the Star. Wars sequels and she says that this. department is called molans nurtural and. first thing to note about these people. people is they all look pretty Haggard.

pretty scruffy yeah probably unbathed we. know based off of what the Goatman says. about his Audi being a stargazer that. they must be severed in some form but I. wonder if they might be doing longer. stretches as enies than the employees of. MDR like maybe the people in mamalian. nurtural do longer stretches like for. months or years at a time so what's. going on with this goat room well. remember in heli R's very first. conversation with Mark on the series she. straight up asked if she was livestock. and it would not surprise me if Dan. Ericson who's been pretty great about. timing characters and scenes explicitly.

addressing the Mysteries and theories in. the viewers Minds as they come up if Dan. might have given us one answer right. away just so we dismiss it with these. goats clearly livestock is part of lum's. Medtech business operation and goats. have some additional significance to the. mythology of the company because Dylan's. waffle party had him wearing a Kier Egan. mask while watching dancers one of whom. wore a goat mask maybe the goats are. used for just medical product testing. the way a lot of big companies will test. on animals but maybe Lumin is testing. psychological nurturing behaviors on. lesser mammals to see how much of our.

mamalian identities are nature as in. what we were born with independent of. environmental influences versus nurture. the influences that impact us after. birth or maybe there's something about. an adolescence goat scream that stirs. one of the tempers within the psyche of. all humans I was also thinking maybe. there's a connection to Dolly the first. Clon sheep which some back in the '90s. feared would lead to a brave new future. where humans could use genetic. engineering to essentially play God by. contrast Lumen using goats instead of. sheep could imply the moral flip side of. that using the animal associated with.

the devil but with Mark and heli here we. kind of run into a common horror. scenario of going into like a small town. where some kind of conspiracy is going. on and everyone has been there for too. long laurren assumes that they're there. to kill them buying into the same. interde departmental propaganda that. made Dylan hate o d we find out later. that clearly the people in mamalian. nurtur B have some incorrect assumptions. about everyone on the outside Irv. arrives to o d meanwhile and initially. we see the painting The courtship of. Kier and imoen as kier's future wife and. Company matriarch Imogen responds over. him back in the goat room Mark questions.

Lauren about Miss Casey and Lauren rings. a bell to summon what is a huge staff of. molans nurtur B including that goat. feeder that we saw back in season 1. episode 5 meanwhile Miss Hong leads. Dylan to what was the security room but. is now the new Audi family visitation. room that mil showed Dylan the. blueprints for construction apparently. moving pretty fast here and I like that. they built it where the security room. was probably to prevent Dylan from. knowing wherever the new security room. is Dylan is greeted by his Audi's wife. Gretchen this actress is Meritt Weaver. who has played a lot of roles including. Denise from The Walking Dead this room.

also has a soft glow lamp in the shape. of a tilted balloon white in this. instance recalling the yellow one of. these in the break room in season 2. episode 1 while inie Dylan G has always. been an Uber confident productive badass. through this conversation he learns that. his Audi has had trouble keeping a job. and is just kind of a up Gretchen. shows him a family photo with their kids. the oldest Jim that's the one who hugged. him in the closet and then Ruth and. Merrick and it was taken at one of these. old timey Western setups which Dyan G. thinks is how the outside world really. looks for this family a reminder that. unlike the other three Ines Dylan only.

had a few seconds in his closet whereas. he had to stay inside the Lumen Security. Office on the severed floor during the. overtime sequence while the other three. got several minutes to experience the. outside world Irv and Felicia laugh. about old Bert stories and how Bert had. said I don't care if you're a bared. goddamn Egan you don't come to my. department and tell me how to print a. snow globe bared Egan was the fourth CEO. of lumen namesake of bared Creek Mark's. neighborhood he ran the company from. 1959 to 1976 and this suggests that Bert. might have been with Lumen as far back. in the 7s now the severance procedure.

seems like a recent thing adopted by. Lumen only in recent times but bar could. have been the Lumen CEO of Bert's youth. Felicia identifies the elevator as the. exports Hall and she says that ond used. to send a lot of shipments there but now. the company sends a courier assuming. nothing from the sever floor makes it. out of lumen and knowing that the. elevator goes down it makes us wonder. what is underneath all of this that. things get exported down to is it just. miles and miles of Cold Storage again. are there other floors beneath the. severed floor that all these characters. might have spent some time on through.

another severed form of their psyche. that they don't know exists Lauren. finally admits that they did know Miss. Casey that she held sessions in their. husbandry tanks and had a gentle way. about her the fact that these sessions. happen in husbandry tanks is just. interesting considering how Jemma and. Mark had some fertility issues. reportedly the goat man says that she. told him his Audi excelled at stargazing. which is an especially kind thing to say. to an inie since we learned from. wendelin that they never see the sky. Lauren and the others want to see Mark. and hel's bellies apparently under the. suspicion that people from MDR had.

pouches now why would this be. significant I'm definitely getting some. Vibes of Star Bellied sneech from Dr. Seuss but also their department is. mamalian nurtural and there are three. types of mammals monot those are the. ones that lay eggs marsupial are the. mammals with pouches and placental. mammals all the rest the ones who. gestate their babies in placental Sachs. so I just love that these mammal experts. would come under the conspiracy theory. that there could be other seever. departments who were genetically bred to. have pouches like kangaroos or possums. when Gretchen hugs any Dylan she say. says I love you but he doesn't return it.

and I think it's just a sad little. moment that both makes him seem like. unworthy but I think really just not. wanting to stake a claim on a woman that. his up Audi really needs more than him. Dylan's kids meanwhile watch an episode. of Danger Mouse this is a British. animated series that ran from 1981 to. [Music]. [Applause]. 1992 we see the mole character Professor. Hinrich Von and cluck he's a. character known for experimenting on. animals and in this clip he points to an. x-ray showing a tiny device in inside. the patient's brain this is such an odd.

deep cut but it's perfect as a reference. because it parallels Lumen putting chips. in the brains of the severed workers and. this whole idea of animal and mammal. experimentation in the background of the. scene you can see the Lumin gift basket. that milch brought with a pineapple. still on the table Gretchen it seems. works the night shift in some uniformed. position maybe a security guard or a. toll booth operator maybe a cop in Lumen. privatized police force either way the. fact that she works the graveyard shift. presents just like another example of. difficulties with work life balance the. creepiest Det detail of the scene that. is a Kier Egan plush doll on the floor.

Devon finds Rick and meeting with. Natalie Kalin who expresses interest in. his book Natalie reads this quote but. surely beer and julips cannot fill the. void left by love and if you look. further down the page you can see the. challenges facing the poor that Rick and. listed including hunger gout shoess lone. sharks rainstorms and other stuff not. that he's wrong but it just feels like. kind of a random list off the top of his. head and I feel like ricken is writing. some commentary on alcoholism which. remember AI Mark suffers from as did.

Mark and Devon's father who is an. undiagnosed alcoholic if I'm sorry uh. Mark and my dad used to have whiskey is. life carved on flask and maybe a habit. that Devon just might be a little too. okay with and I'm only basing this on. her eagerness for wine right after she. finished pumping in the season one. finale I pumped so it's Miller time hey. no shame I know it's hard for new moms. to find these windows to unwind but. there is just a family history here that. we have to acknowledge overall this. passage in Rick's book is nonsense and. it shows that Rick and knows as little. about alcoholism as he does about what.

it really means to be poor but we also. have to remember that Lumen printed that. fake newspaper for any Mark that. included a passage about ricken and. Rick's book but also a new PR Lumen book. suggesting that it is part of lum's plan. to convert to this anti- Lumen voice in. marks Audi's life to flip him in favor. of their company and by expressing. interest in his book that seems to be. part of that plan also random detail. behind Deon here that is a goat head. statue on their side table goats are. everywhere in this episode and it freaks. me out so mark and Devon craft together. this ultraviolet lamp with the words who.

is Alive written in pieces of felt which. we know from the get-go is no smarter of. a plan than any Mark's missing posters. not only are we going to learn these. letters are not capable of burning on. the retinas it's just the simplest. question to ask clarification on who. inie Mark was talking about when he said. she's alive something that that innie. would have said several days in. conversations before that and a question. that it would be impossible for him to. deliver an answer for to the Audi but. Devin says the whole mind Collective. would be very proud us of that protest. group that howy Mark drunkenly argued.

with in season 1 meanwhile milch's. computer screen reads management control. panel and four listings for personnel. the first one being 019. 82729 38 second one 11 2954 d104 the. third one being 748 918-260-0355. maybe the drawer system could be part of.

the surveillance on the MDR folks. current actions but remember Miss Hong. who I still think is Mark and gemma's. daughter kept her cure Diving Game in. her desk drawer it could be connected to. that or maybe drawers are where they. just keep the corpses down on the lower. level beneath the severed floor Harmony. confronts Helena in the parking lot. outside Lumen Harmony demands to be made. MDR floor manager again to remove milch. and that they need her because Harmony. achieved everything through dedication. and Industry not because she was born. into it obviously a dig at Helena who. was born into this family as as a direct. descendant of Kier but also remember Dan.

Erikson said that Harmony was part of. lumen since she was a girl not since. birth so I'm wondering if her mom might. have taken her when she was a young girl. and fled whatever life she was in and. joined Kier and then something bad. happened to Charlotte coell Helena picks. up her phone to call Natalie to summon. the board and Harmony initially follows. her into the building but then stops. suddenly when she sees Helena's driver. or bodyguard and then turns to leave I'm. reminded somewhat of that amazing scene. in Good Fellas when Karen suddenly. senses that she's about to be whacked. and runs back to her.

car no no no hey go ahead it's right in. there I'll come back later but what. spooked Harmony here was this man. involved in the death of Harmony's. mother Charlotte or did Charlotte. perhaps come at odds with the company at. some point and then got taken in a. similar way or is it just a vibe that. Harmony gets well we cut back to Mark. counting with his eyes closed and he's. cut off at 37 Justice he was cut off on. 37 when he transitioned to his any in. the elevator in the opening. minutes and we get a jump care from the. returning Dr assal rabi the Rogue Lumen.

employee who did P's reintegration. procedure and the woman who killed Doug. Greiner riabi confirms that Gemma is. still alive or at least she was the last. time she saw her rabi offers to do a. reintegration on Mark and she claims. that she's better at it now saying she. can sew together a version of Mark who. loves Gemma with a version who Ken and. she's cut off when Mark just immediately. agrees so I wonder how did riabi get. better at reintegration since pety who. she obviously did a very bad job with. who else did she practice reintegration. on could her most recent patients have. included Helena Egan rabi does after all.

still work at Lumen as a severance. surgeon she's not a former employee. she's a current employee rabi explains. that the monitor tracks the five brain. wave frequencies of the inie and the. Audi Delta Theta Alpha Beta gamma so. adults have all of these brain waves in. different parts of or all parts of our. brains Delta brain waves are .1 to 3.5. Hertz they occur in deep sleep and. they're the dominant rhythm in infants. we actually increase delta waves to. decrease our awareness of the physical. world Theta brain waves 3.5 to 7.5 Hertz. for slow activity seeing in connection.

with creativity daydreaming and. fantasizing and is a repository for. memories emotions and Sensations these. are really strong during meditation and. prayer Alpha brain waves range from 8 to. 12 Hertz they Bridge the conscious with. the subconscious and are really the. major Rhythm for relaxed adults beta. brain waves are 13 to 30 Hertz fast. activity really the dominant rhythm of. those who are alert or anxious or just. have our eyes open as we're taken in the. world this is a state that most of the. brain is when we're like problem solved. or making judgments or decision- making.

and then gamma brain waves is everything. over 30 htz that's when the brain needs. to simultaneously process information. from multiple areas it's like where. we're at when we're multitasking and. bordering overloaded we see Mark's hand. shaking which is apparently a bad thing. because it suggests that rabi's. frequency Rod is impacting part of. Mark's brain that controls his motor. function rabi asks her first question. who am I again kind of that who are you. opening line of the series coming back. there then asks Mark's mother's name we. learn fern Scout and then her eye color.
