RESIDENT EVIL BREAKDOWN: Easter Eggs & Details You Missed!
Did Zack Creger just make the greatest. video game adaptation ever for the big. screen? Welcome back to New Rockstars. I'm Jessica Clemens, and one of my most. anticipated films of 2026 has finally. arrived, and that's Zack Greger's. Resident Evil. The Resident Evil name is. best known for its video games, but its. legacy also comes from the earlier. films, creating one massive horror IP. with an incredibly dedicated fan base. across the board. While this movie. celebrates the games through very small. gameplay inspired moments and even. smaller Easter eggs, its commitment to. being itself not something to please. every fan is immediately obvious. Zack. Kger keeps the film simple, funny, and. constantly moving. Like many of his.
films, it wastes no time getting. started. And at under 95 minutes, no. less. So, instead of focusing on the. long list of Easter eggs, I want to look. at how Kger captures the actual. experience of playing a survival horror. game from a technical perspective and. just overall as a survival horror game. adapted into a movie. But first, before. we get into it, make sure to check out. Nerd Riot.shop for the latest and. greatest in New Rockstar merch. We have. some Resident Evil merch. We call it. Raccoon City. Woohoo. Show up and show. out for your favorite infected and. zombie creature franchise with this bad. boy. And as always, post yourself with.
it. Tag us. We love seeing you guys in. the wild wearing our merch. [music] It's. so great. All right, let's get into it. Just as a precautionary, I assume you. know, or at least I know that you. probably know. I'll be spoiling the. entire movie in this video. So, if you. haven't seen the movie, maybe go watch. it, then come back to here. Let's move. on. As most of us already know, Zack. Kger is a huge fan of Resident Evil. video games. And although his film isn't. a direct adaptation of any one game, he's been very open about wanting to. make what he describes as a survival. horror movie. In an interview with. Deadline, Kger explained that the idea.
first came to him while he was on set of. Barbarian. Later, after Barbarian. success, he had the concept for the. movie, and he eventually pitched it to. Constantine Films, the German film. company best known for the Resident Evil. franchise. They liked what they heard, and Kreger began writing the movie. Kreger wrote this movie with his friend. Shay Hatton, who was also the writer for. John Wick 3 and four, along with. Ballerina. And like his other movies. that are famously going against the. grain of traditional script writing, the. two freeballed their way into each beat. of this movie. One thing I really love. about Zack Kger's stories is he. consistently takes ordinary lives and. just slowly starts chipping away at them.
in real time. And I think a big part of. that comes from his love of structure. and wanting to understand his own work. So where weapons and Barbarian had to go. through like these structural surprises. keeping us on our toes, Resident Evil. does the exact opposite. It's a simple. movie taking us from point A to point B. like he's mentioned many times in. interviews. and structural surprises in. this movie come from how far the journey. takes us. So, in this survival horror. movie, instead of following Leon Kennedy. or Chris Redfield, Resident Evil. introduces us to someone who feels much. more like a regular guy. Brian, who's. played by Austin Abrams, who you might. remember from Weapons, who will also be.
appearing in the terrifying whalefall, is a lowly medical courier making his. final delivery of the night. And Brian. himself is very much a regular degular. guy. He's not a trained soldier or a. cop. He's nowhere near the average movie. kind of hero. He's just a regular guy. who seems to stumble into one bad. situation after another. We don't know. it yet, but the movie is taking place in. Colorado according to most of the. license plates that we see in the movie. And while the game stayed oblivious to. the fact, it was at times assumed. somewhere in like Colorado or somewhere. near the mountains or just in the. Midwest. But now we know in this movie. at least it's Colorado. The movie really.
begins in St. George Hospital where our. little ordinary wallflower can't seem to. get anyone's attention. He's delivering. an organ on behalf of Lightfoot Medical. Transport. This scene already gives a. very gamey feel. The camera follows him, ignored in this hospital until he gets. his mission. We'll get into the camera. work soon, but Kger has mentioned before. in interviews how this movie lives. largely in a third-p person perspective, and those shots help set this up to be a. video game. Eventually, Brian is offered. double pay to transport another organ. outside the zone, to which he agrees. It's a schedule A top priority package. needed for Raccoon City General. Raccoon.
City is the fictional city where it all. began in Resident Evil. And that's all. I'm going to say about it in case they. want to make a sequel or anything else. I don't want to spoil too much. Right. away, you're able to see the kind of guy. Brian is. Not just by his very early. 2000 Seattle vibe and his George. Harrisonesque looks, but he's at odds. with his pregnant girlfriend, Michelle, and the two are struggling to figure out. what they want to do about the baby. Michelle is also voiced by Sarah Paxton, my girl. At this point, just make your. wife the main star. I love her, I don't. care. Uh, make Sarah Paxton the star. 100%. Main character energy. The movie.
takes absolutely no time in getting. started. In fact, our first zombie. spotting is in under 10 minutes. As. Brian swerves across the icy road, he. slams into a woman in a red dress, and. it's all very striking. No pun intended. or pun intended. She got hit by the car. After checking on the woman, he decides. to strap her into his car and continue. on his journey, seeing as though he is. on his way to a hospital. That's when. he's pulled over by the sheriff. The. sheriff, played by Jonno Wilson, which. is also his character's last name, according to his name badge on his. uniform. He's reporting from Martin. County, as you can see on his police. car. I was hoping it would say Raccoon.
City Police Department. I assume they. use Martin County instead of RCPD. because connecting it to the Raccoon. City Police Department would immediately. tie this movie to Leon from the games. and create a different movie than the. one Zach is trying to make. That's not. to say he isn't making a Resident Evil. movie. Structurally, it's still very. much a Resident Evil story. It's just. focusing on a different, newer character. this time. The sheriff chooses to take. the injured woman and force Brian to. follow behind him as a guide to Raccoon. City. It's also at this moment that we. learn that the police or dispatch lines. aren't working. We'll see another scene. where Brian is at the farmhouse and he's. trying to call Michelle but can't get a.
hold of the police. They're completely. just unresponsive. On the way, the. sheriff flips his car and it's clear. that all hell's broken loose. According. to Zack Creger, his inspiration for the. car flipping is actually from Fargo. He. liked the idea of it being shot from. Brian's perspective. The creativity and. Kger's vision didn't stop at the. writing. It continued through his Oscar. nominated DP Darius Wolski. The renowned. Polish director of photography known for. films like Pirates of the Caribbean, Prometheus, The Martian, and Alien. Covenant. Darius has a real talent for. making things look very cinematic but. also very natural and creating huge.
eerie environments where the isolation. can feel just as terrifying as the. monsters you're out running. Some have. called him one of the most rehired DPS. alive. DFI rentals argue his themography. is unusually wide. It covers gothic. fantasy, submarine thrillers, blockbuster adventure, hard science. fiction, a western, and a period epic. So, bringing someone like Darius into a. movie that follows a medical career from. point A to point B might seem like an. unusual choice, but it's actually. perfect for an epic survival journey of. one ordinary man trying to make it. through a zombie outbreak in a world. adapted from a video game. It also helps. when your camera operator is the same.
man that worked on the Odyssey James. Goldman. So, visually, the movie spends. a lot of time in these cold, dark. environments. The most dominant light. comes from the blue hues, whether that's. from the moonlight or the snow. reflecting light back onto the. characters, and that makes the color red. really stand out immediately. Red. becomes a reoccurring visual theme. throughout the movie, and sure, that. makes sense for a zombie movie centered. around an outbreak, but the movie uses. it more intentionally than just. splashing blood across the screen. The. movie uses the color in a way that. reminded me of Barbarian a lot. KGER. used colors in Barbarian from opposite. sides of the color wheel to take us.
through that story. When red or orange. enters in this movie, it feels like a. warning. In a very gamey point of view, we need to approach the vehicle, check. for signs of life, and seek help. The. woman is missing from the upturned. vehicle, but Brian finds a gun. And this. is one of the mechanics Zach wanted to. show that it's very nearly a survival. horror game, but made into a movie. We'll upgrade our weapons as soon as we. get slightly proficient with the last. one, but in a very grounded way, Brian, like many of us, don't know how to use a. gun. This is around the first moment we. see the game-like POV, something we all.
enjoyed in The Last of Us, where it. feels like our subject is steering the. camera. These gaming moments are. something I really appreciate because. they're done so well, but still. aggressively enough to cause the same. kind of panic I would get if I was. actually playing the games. At one point. in this scene, the zombie woman emerges. from behind his car headlights, almost. like an angel charging straight at him. He starts shooting at her, spraying and. missing every shot. And again, I love. the comedy real life scenario playing. here because Zack Creger asked himself, "If I were to shoot a gun, almost unload. the clip, what would happen?". Unknowingly, he shot bullets into his. engine from spraying all over the place,
which will return as a joke later. Luckily, the woman is also taken down. for now. With no vehicle, Brian decides. to continue on foot until he comes. across an isolated, desolate farmhouse. That's when a dog comes running after. him like a little black blur chasing him. into the farm. And it's insane to think. that he's just running in the snow. You. can see him picking up snow as his feet. leaves the ground. Inside the barn, having successfully outrun the dog, Brian throws the ladder that saved him. at the dog, which is still barking. non-stop below after chasing him up to. the higher part of the barn. And this. works because the movie makes us. experience the obstacle with Brian. It's.
a scene grounded in classic game logic. This also reminds me a bit of the. Dungeons and Dragons movie because like. that film, you're choosing your own. adventure in a sandbox. There are. limitations, but you're basically free. to do whatever you want. And that's what. happens when we're forced to make the. choice along with Brian to swing off. this hook and land outside the barn, hurting ourselves in the process, literally taking a little bit of fall. damage. Before he jumps, you actually. see the first aid spray from Resident. Evil 2. Just when Brian thinks he's. safe, the dog crashes through the barn. walls, giving us another jump scare. before revealing that it's infected. The. creature's mouth opens like the.
demogorgans from Stranger Things with. tentacles darting out and grabbing Brian. until he's finally able to take the dog. down. Now, this dog was shared on. Resident Evil social media during the. first week of September. The information. attached to it works almost like a. collectible from the games, and both the. dog's x-rays and Brian's delivery. details have connections to the Umbrella. Corporation. Side note, as most of you. know, the Umbrella Corporation is the. main antagonist of the games. They. operated under the guise of being a. leading pharmaceutical company and. developing other products. Behind the. scenes, they're working on bad genetic. research, including the tea virus that.
started it all. That doesn't stop in. this movie, as we'll learn a little bit. later. Back to the dog of it all. There. are always going to be zombie dogs in. Resident Evil. In Resident Evil 4, you. come across Las Plagas, the dogs that. are infected. Even those have creepy. tentacles. And funny enough, my friend. Angelica Trey had a conversation with. Zack Kger a while back where he. mentioned that his favorite character. from the games were the dog. So, naturally, he had to put one in the. movie. The creature also feels very much. like John Carpenters's The Thing. I. think a lot of these creatures give me. John Carpenters's The Thing vibe. The. production designer Tom Hammock has.
mentioned how they use the creatures and. zombies from Resident Evil 4 and. Resident Evil 6 as inspirations, just. pulling things like the teeth. integration and the tentacles. And if. you're wondering why they focus so. heavily on these exaggerated elements. versus traditional zombie tropes in an. interview with IGN, Zach explained, "You. have this opportunity for the T- virus. to do all these really fascinating. things to the human body and to the. world around you. And so to just limit. it to zombies feels like a squandered. opportunity. So I tried to really bury. it up. And that's exactly what the movie. does. Instead of giving us the zombies. that we encounter over and over and over. again, the infection keeps evolving into.
something grosser and more. unpredictable. Unamused, Brian continues. to the farmhouse. Now, once he enters. their house, it's empty. And clearly, all hell's broken loose here, too. He's. found a shotgun, which is good news. And. like a video game, it has no bullets. So, he begins searching for them. everywhere, even the refrigerator. This. portion of the movie set in the. farmhouse is where Kger really leans. into the core mechanics of a survival. horror game. Not only does the house. have way too many doors, but its layout. makes it easier for the camera to follow. Brian's line of sight, so things are. revealed to us at the same time as. they're revealed to him. The house is. also used almost entirely for resource.
management. We're surviving with Brian. by searching for ammo, opening drawers, and checking anything we can. That's. when he spots the telephone and he calls. 911 first, but the line is dead. Then he. calls Michelle, which goes to voicemail. and he leaves her a message telling her. to call this number back. And that. becomes a pretty jarring situation in a. minute. In the IGN breakdown with Zack. Kger, he acknowledged that the plant in. this shot, he took the green herb from. Resident Evil 4 and replicated the. bucket for it. One room he's searching. for bullets in has a typewriter in it. And these were the rooms that you could. save your game in. It was like a safe. room. You could organize your things,
whatever. You were just, you know, safe. in there. He enters one room and luckily. in the drawer of randomness, he finds. the heavy field ammo, which is from the. games as well. In the snowy field. outside, Brian sees through the window. that the woman has woken back up and is. charging toward the farmhouse. He. frantically grabs the ammo and tries to. load his gun, but in a panic, he spills. it all over the place. Funny enough, Zack Kger mentioned in an interview with. Letterbox that they had to VFX her arm. movements a little here because her arms. were locked at an angle that felt too. similar to the people that ran in. weapons. He called it a very expensive. mistake to fix this. So, her arms now.
wiggle a little bit when she's running. Just as the woman approaches the house, he hears the telephone ring and it's so. visceral and so booming while the music. continues to swell. As the woman. approaches the house, we hear her heavy. footsteps. They're exaggeratively like. very loud, but considering this is a. dead woman who's been wandering through. the snow for God knows how long, those. feet are probably swollen and hard as. rocks. She slowly but surely makes her. way up the stairs. Then, right as. Michelle is leaving a voicemail at a. stranger's number, we get a jump scare. from the farmer who lives in the house. This scene is so insane, and Eric jumps. so high in the theater, he almost scared.
me out of my seat. During their. struggle, Brian is able to take out the. farmer. Then, right as the woman runs. into the room, he shoots off her head. with the shotgun. When the two bodies. hit the ground, one with the hole in its. head and the other without a head, tentacles begin crawling out of the. woman's neck, and it looks like a giant, incredibly long worm, weasling its way. out of like the mush of a neck. Another. tentacle emerges from the man's cheek, and the two connect, linking their. bodies together and forcing his head. into her neck. This creates the. amalgamation that we eventually see in. the trailer with the hands and legs.
sprawled out on either side of the. darkened doorway. This is also around. the part where it's revealed through a. family photo of the dog and the farmer. There was also a wife who I assume was. the woman that's been chasing Brian this. entire time. On Brian's way out of the. house, he grabs a pair of keys from the. rack on the door. When we first entered. the house, you could see these keys. sitting there. And I actually theorized. in my trailer breakdown that they would. be important. And as we're going to see. throughout this movie, doors, locks, and. keys are a huge part of the games. Even. Zach mentioned in interviews, there's. just way more doors than there should be. in these games. You're constantly. searching for keys to open different. locks, and they don't let that become a.
small detail in this movie. Just like. right now, Brian realizes he can't leave. in the truck because there's a giant. lock on the gate. He tries to shoot it, but it doesn't break. So, he chooses to. drive over it instead. And this feels. like game logic that we see in like a D. and D movie. Again, like I said earlier, you're choosing your own adventure, but. the game has rules, and it's not going. to let you ignore its mechanics. You. want to try driving the car over the. gate? Go ahead. But you're also not. going to get very far because the car. gets damaged. Literally, it gets stuck. on the fence in the gate. When Brian. looks back, he notices the creature now. coming through the house, and that's his. cue to leave. Every store I've driven. past or walked into for the past month.
has a back to school sign in the window. and it's dredging up a lot of memories. for me. Some of them are good old. friends, old habits, stuff that I'm. happy to revisit, but some of them are a. little more difficult experiences I had. before. I couldn't properly. contextualize them that I'm reckoning. with now. Something my therapist has. reminded me of that's really helpful is. that I can now apply adult context and. perspective to some of those feelings. It's no surprise to me to hear that some. of my friends drama from the eighth. grade isn't really nearly as big of a. deal as it felt like it was at the time, but therapy gives me that space and time. to let go of that baggage. Better Help,

use of CGI throughout the movie. For. example, The Fat Man in the Sewer is. actually a 2,000lb puppet built by this. man. This man has an extraordinary. history. His first job was being key. sculptor on the Terminator. >> There's one puppet that he built in LA. that's like 2,000 lb. Takes like four. people to operate. We like shipped that. in pieces over to Frog where we were. shooting and and that that was like a. treat. >> for the movie. They did as much as. possible practically and for things that. they knew would ultimately need CGI. They would still build practical. versions, photograph it and shoot it on.
set so the VFX artist had a physical. reference for the lighting and the. textures and the movement instead of. just having to guess. And this is where. Weda comes in. Zack Kger worked with. Legacy Effects to create the practical. prototypes while Weda could use it as. their basis for the visual effects. Weda, if you don't know, is the. well-known VFX company in New Zealand, founded by Peter Jackson, famous for the. Lord of the Rings, Avatar, Planet of the. Apes, you name it. Legacy FX is the. equally well-known FX house that's. famous for making and shaping and. building giant practicals. A. continuation of Stan Winston Studio, which is known for literally everything.
Jurassic Park, The Terminator, Aliens, Legacy has worked on the best. They are. the best. So, all you really need to. know from this is, yeah, Zack Creger is. making money now. He's making with money. now. Brian has now made his way into a. dark tunnel that he has to go through, which is a great obstacle, not only for. a horror video game where you're. constantly being chased by zombies, but. also for real life. For an ordinary guy. like Brian, having to face a completely. dark tunnel, is probably one of the. hardest things he could do. Eventually, he reaches an impass, an RV that slams. sideways into the tunnel, there's no. going over it, no going under it, you.
got to go through it. Little by little, he makes his way through the RV until he. hears something move behind a sliding. bathroom door. He gathers the courage to. pull back the curtain, revealing a child. shaking. But when he looks down, we see. that her foot has turned into tentacles. She tells Brian that her mother bit her. and ran away and now her foot hurts. And. this becomes an important bit of. preparation for Brian. When he. eventually is bitten, he begins changing. in the same limb he was bitten just like. the girl was in her foot. And like her, he remains consciously human while. losing control of his body at the end of. the movie. The little girl screams, "Help me!" as the tentacle monster.
attacks Brian and he fumbles for the. shotgun and her face suddenly rips open. like a demogorgan dog that we saw. earlier revealing a single eyeball. peeking out and he shoots her in the. face. Thankfully, we don't see that. part. He also gets bit by her, which is. never a good sign, and he's going to. play it off like he's not been for the. entire rest of the movie. He continues. on his journey, making it through the. other side of the RV and eventually out. of the tunnel. And in the forest, we saw. this zombie amalgamation has absorbed. even more bodies, rolling in these. endless cartwheels parallel to Bryant as. he runs towards a light in the distance. And it's clearly a car coming down the.
road. He's saved by Maxine and Paul, played by Cali Reese and Paul Walter. Hower. They're searching for him because. they need the bag. And this is where we. get one of the funniest interactions in. the movie. There's this weird contrast. between the severity of what's happening. and how naturally funny Paul Walter. Hower's character is with Brian. I. honestly could have watched these two. play this scene for a much longer time. I'd watch an entire movie starring these. two. They work so well off of each. other, especially trapped together in. this vehicle while everything around. them is falling apart. Finally, Brian. does what we've been begging him to do.
the entire movie. He opens the cooler. and inside he finds a small vial, and. that's when we learn it may be able to. cure what's happening. It's the antidote. created by scientists working for the. Umbrella Corporation. They explain that. they were contracted by the government. to investigate genetic enhancements for. classified reasons. In the recent days, they had apparently made progress. Unfortunately, one of the scientists. dropped the vial they were working on, releasing the substance that caused the. outbreak. This liquid Brian's been. carrying is bright yellow and can. neutralize the agent causing the. outbreak. Later, when they're tinkering. with it, it will turn green. And I'm.
pretty sure the anti virus was also. green in the first movie. In a pretty. funny explanation, Paul Walterhauser's. character points out that it wasn't an. emergency when they originally requested. the sample. It only became an emergency. after they broke the only vial they had. He tells Brian that there's a secure. room at the top of Raccoon City General. Hospital where they need to deliver it. to. The camera shows us the overlook of. Raccoon City where you can see the. Raccoon City General Hospital, which was. inspired by London's Guys Tower, the. tallest hospital in the world. And just. like that, Brian has his next mission. We finally enter Raccoon City. This is. actually shot in Prague, but they chose.
this city because it looked closest to. Resident Evil 2, and they were trying to. get that look. Instead of the rain, though, they use snowfall. We see a. woman running from a gang of infected. Maxine steps out of the car to save her. and takes down the infected, looks to. her left, and walks away. And in one of. the funniest realtime moments in the. movie, she never comes back. The two are. left sitting in the car trying to figure. out what to do. Eventually, Paul decides. that Brian should go out and get the. keys from her because they realize she. took the keys with him. Brian looks in. the back seat and finds a machine gun. Kger mentioned in an interview with IGN. that he wanted to make a Resident Evil.
where you're following an average gamer, someone who might know how to use a gun. in a video game, but would have. absolutely no idea what to do with one. in real life, which is how Brian. approaches this situation exactly. He. almost shoots Paul in the face. When he. reaches her body, there's barely. anything left, just her legs. He sees. the keys and in a moment that feels. straight out of a game. The body gets. dragged every time he gets close to. them. Eventually, like a normal person, Brian says, "Fuck it." But when he gets. back to the car, he realizes that Paul. is being pulled out by the tentacles. He. tried to save him by using the machine. gun, but he accidentally shoots Paul in.
the stomach in the leg, and he's forced. to let go of the car door and get pulled. into the darkness. Brian realizes that. the creature is continuously pulling. more bodies into itself and getting. bigger. It uses Paul's body to further. all the bodies that it's combined into. itself. So, Brian takes the opportunity. to run. As he races through the alleys, he's surrounded by these yellow street. lights beaming down and bouncing off the. walls of the buildings. Eventually, he. hits a dead end and he squeezes through. a fence and he gets his gun stuck. because, you know, well, he's Brian. And. just before the tentacle monster gets to. him, he climbs into the sewer and falls.
down. And this is a good time to bring. up something Zack Kger mentioned in. interviews before the movie came out. He. talked about how in Resident Evil, the. deeper you get into the game, the more. lost you become. And that's exactly what. we're seeing here. So now Brian is in. the sewers where he comes across the fat. man. And according to Kger, this. character was inspired by the judge in. the novel Blood Meridian. It's a. towering pale hairless figure. It's. belching. It smells. And then its. stomach starts to gurgle before a bunch. of infected sewer rats rip their way out. of its stomach and begin chasing at. Brian. He starts spraying bullets at. them. And I don't remember ever spraying.
bullets at rats in the games, but rats. in the games infected are a thing. These. feel more demonic. Eventually, Brian. finds his way out of the sewer. He looks. back down the hole to see that nothing. has chased him back up. In the original. script, though, a rat did jump out and. crawl up his leg before he ended up. killing it, but they took it out. Clearly, presumably safe, knowing damn. well nothing's actually safe in the. survival horror game. At the top of a. building, a zombie launches itself at. Brian. And this is a scene we got a. glimpse of in the trailer, but we also. got an extended look at not long ago. This sequence they refer to as Jump.
Street. According to Zack Kger, it was. the most difficult to shoot because Zach. didn't want to use solely CGI. So they. rigged humansized blood bags onto cranes. and Austin would run on his markers and. they would time dropping the crane. So. these 100 150lb bags would land right. next to him and explode. This scene uses. these long wide kind of compositions. with very little camera movement and it. feels like the camera is just chasing. Brian instead of these body bags just. hitting the ground around him. What I. really like about this moment is that. it's another example of turning the. environment into a survival horror game.
or at least into a survival horror movie. because Brian isn't simply just running. from zombies. The entire city becomes an. obstacle course and the danger can. literally come from anywhere. And I love. that the movie lets us learn everything. alongside Brian. He's not a Resident. Evil expert. He doesn't know what these. creatures are capable of yet. He doesn't. even know what causes them to link. together. And neither do we really. So, while he's dodging these bodies, Creger. has mentioned that one of them actually. came dangerously close to landing on. Austin Abrams. And you can see it in the. movie. I think it's one of the bodies he. skip hops over really quickly. But this. was all done practically. and they.
apparently covered this little city. street in Prague an insane amount of. blood that day. He's finally made it to. the hospital, but beyond the lobby doors. is a crowd of infected. Knowing not to. go that way, Brian looks towards the. parking garage, which of course is. locked. He tries shooting the lock and. misses the first time, reminding us once. again how bad he is with guns. He shoots. it a second time close up and thankfully. the lock breaks. And I thought the. bullet was going to ricochet back and. hit him. So, I'm glad that didn't. happen. Inside the garage, he reaches. the elevator, but the button isn't. working and his arm is only getting. worse. as he pleads and cries through. what he thinks might be his final.
moments, a voice suddenly comes through. on the intercom. And that voice is. actually our director himself, Zack. Kger. And in another very video game. inspired moment, Brian is forced to take. the stairwell up to the sky bridge on. the 24th floor, which will take him to. the 28th floor where the lab is. And he. takes the stairs in a very funny. sequence, only making it up four flights. of stairs before he's completely. exhausted. He exits to the elevator and. this gives me a little bit more panic. because Brian now has to wait for an. elevator to arrive while also watching. to make sure a zombie just doesn't come. bursting through any door. This was a.
subtle detail planned by the production. designer Tom Hammock to evoke the same. kind of dread that you feel when you're. playing the games because you never know. what the next threat will be and he. wanted you to feel that in the hospital. Once he makes it into the elevator, he. starts hearing noises that are clearly. coming from an infected above him. Then. out of nowhere, the ceiling of the. elevator begins dissolve. acid starts. burning through the ceiling and slowly. eating away at the floor as it rises. with each passing level. Brian looks. through the hole in the ceiling and. realizes the infected can vomit acid. This is one of the qualities I think. they borrowed from Resident Evil 6 where. there were infected animals that could.
spit acid since they're taking bits and. pieces of characteristics. I can see. them applying that to this character. here. He eventually escapes the elevator. as it completely dissolves around him, but not before seeing that the infected. amalgamation of bodies is still chasing. him from below. He climbs onto the. elevator cable and continues upward now. parallel with the acid vomiting. infected. Brian grabs the creature with. his bare hands and pulls it over the. edge of the open elevator level, forcing. it to vomit acid onto the multiple. zombie below. The creature falls several. floors before escaping through another. open elevator level. Brian then throws. the acid vomiting infected over the edge.
and continues his journey towards the. sky bridge. Brian realizes he has to. make his way through the maternity ward, which is filled with the infected. Total. Film visited the sets well before the. movie's release and described the. maternity ward as going full Resident. Evil, covered in these massive. fiberglass egg-like membranes with. tentacles crawling across the walls. There was also this wild practical setup. where stunt performers were suspended. upside down above the set and trained to. hold their breath while gallons of slime. were dumped over them. The membranes. would then break apart, sending the.
performers dropping straight into the. scene, all done in camera. And we see. that play out in the movie. It's. absolutely disgusting. But before we see. that, Brian uses a mop to push his way. through the cradles, which are. definitely filled with infected half-. deadad tentacle babies. He almost. cleared a path forward when he knocks. into one of the beds, which bursts into. a blood sack and sprays blood all over. him. He staggers to the floor, screaming, creating a train reaction. But before everything completely falls. apart, we get a look at the infected. baby's long spidery hands and tiny head. And it's disgusting. I don't like it. All these babies feel like a racer head.
I don't like looking at it. He runs. towards the exit of the maternity ward. using the mop to keep the door closed. But when he reaches the sky bridge, he. realizes it's completely crumbled apart, leaving behind a giant hole. Brian has. to carefully walk along the edge to. reach the other side. Through the. opening, he sees the giant creature one. that's been chasing him this entire time. spinning and crawling up the side of the. building to reach him. Brian is down to. his last bullet. Just like in the games. where you're constantly counting your. ammo, he's been keeping track of every. bullet throughout the entire movie. So. with one shot left, he takes that aim. and finally lands it. The bullet cuts.
through the mop, holding the maternity. ward door shut. The infected rush out, spilling across the broken sky bridge. and into the creature below. One after. another, they crash into the creature. and tumble all the way to the ground, where I assume they all die. He finally. makes it to the lab where Zach Cherry. appears to guide him inside with the. cooler. But with every step, the. infection is spreading further through. Brian's body. Once they get inside, they. hand over the vial to the group of. scientists. One is actually Griffin. Newman. He's actually been on a lot of. things, but he's also the co-host of the. podcast Blank Check. So, hi, Griffin. Sorry that you die first. Immediately. they begin working at the antidote. But.
by this point, Brian's arm has. completely transformed into tentacles. In a genuinely very funny moment, he. looks at them basically and says, "Hey, whenever you guys are ready with that, just let me know." I love Austin Abram. so much. But once they realize he's. infected, it's already too late. Brian. starts tearing through everyone in the. room. Just like with the little girl in. the RV, he's still trying to plead with. them to give him the syringe, but his. body is reacting violently. He's killing. people, ripping them apart, and. destroying the lab while desperately. just trying to maintain control. Zach. Cherry's character probably gets the. worst death or also the easiest death.
Brian uses a desk to slam him against a. wall so violently that his body just. explodes. Eventually, everyone dies. except for one scientist who manages to. grab the syringe and run. And of course, all of these Umbrella Corporation. scientists are absolute cowards. The. last one is being chased out by Brian, who has now absorbed the bodies of the. other scientists that he ripped apart, becoming another grotesque amalgamation. thing. The two make it to the edge of. the sky bridge, where the scientist is. just seconds away from injecting Brian. with the antidote. But before he can do. it, the tentacle shoots out from the. side, breaks off his limb, and sends the. syringe falling 28 floors to the ground.
Brian then swallows the scientist's hole. just as the National Guard finally. arrives by helicopter. And by this. point, Brian has fully transformed into. the same amalgamation that has been. chasing him throughout the entire movie. And that's the end. Brian starts this. movie as an ordinary guy who has no idea. what he's walking into. He doesn't even. know how to use a gun. He doesn't know. what the creatures are. He doesn't know. where he's going, what's inside the. cooler, or even what's happening to his. own body. and neither do we. I think the. movie works really well as a Resident. Evil adaptation without directly. adapting one of the games. I personally. wish it was a bit more dramatic and.
serious, but I'm not going to act like I. didn't have a good time watching this. and I've already seen it twice. What I. appreciate is that it isn't trying to. recreate a specific game. It's. recreating what it feels like to play. one. You're an ordinary person trapped. in a horrible situation, constantly. asking yourself, "Okay, what the hell do. I do next?" And somehow Zack Kger. manages to make that experience really. funny, disgusting, terrifying, and also. very cinematic. Is it the greatest video. game adaptation ever made? No. Because. when you're adapting a massive IP, I do. think you still have to engage with that. massive IP's lore a little bit. But I.
also think Zack Creger understood. something really important about. adapting Resident Evil. You don't. necessarily need to give us Leon Kennedy. or Chris Redfield or a direct retelling. of one of the games. Sometimes all you. need is a regular guy and a whole lot of. doors. I really did like this movie. The. critic and nerd in me had a great time. with it and I'll be seeing it a third. time. I had a ball. So don't get it. twisted because I had like two notes.
