MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE (2026) Breakdown! Every Easter Egg and Reference You Missed!

Welcome back to New Rockstars. I'm. Gianna Ebalino, and this is a breakdown. of Masters of the Universe directed by. Travis Knight and based on the wildly. popular [music] Mattel media and toy. franchise. In this video, I'm going to. go through the film scene by scene for. all the details, references, and Easter. eggs that you might have missed. I love. this movie. I thought it was a lot of. fun and hit just the right mix of humor, nostalgia, and optimism. It felt like a. throwback to a simpler time, and I. enjoyed the ride. This movie obviously. had a lot of nods and a lot of love for. the original animated series, but I. wasn't expecting it to have so many 1987. [music] live-action movie references and.

Easter eggs. When that movie came out, it was mostly dismissed by critics and. audiences, but has become something of a. cult classic since then. My brother and. I saw it when I was very young, and I. actually love it and rewatch it every. few years. I even just rewatched it last. night right after seeing this new one. And for those of you that don't know, I. host a podcast about cartoons from the. '80s, so I rewatched the animated series. many times over the years, and I've. checked out most of the new iterations. [music] as well. So, I'm excited to dive. into this. Before the movie even starts, we get the Amazon MGM logo with the. English art for art's sake changing to. the Latin Ars Gratia Artis. And then,

instead of Leo the Lion, the usual MGM. lion in the center, we get Cringer in. all his green glory. He gives a very. un-Cringer-like roar that's more suited. to his alter ego Battle Cat. And then, the film opens with voice-over from. adult Prince Adam, played perfectly by. Nicholas Galitzine, giving his backstory. while on what we find out is a first. date on Earth. He talks about Eternia, his home planet, and all the creatures. that live there. The camera soars over. the gorgeous Eternian landscape that. contrasts with how the planet looks when. Adam will eventually get back there and.

it's been ravaged by Skeletor and his. forces. A lot of this is straight out of. the original cartoon. That animated. He-Man and the Masters of the Universe. series started in September of 1983. It. ran for two seasons, and each season had. a whopping 65 episodes. [music] Since. then, there have been other remakes, reboots, iterations, and revivals of. that original show and its spin-off. She-Ra Princesses of Power, which. started in 1985. The very first movie. was actually 1985's animated film The. Secret of the Sword. That was produced. by Filmation, who also did the He-Man. and She-Ra cartoons. Then in 1987, the.

first live-action movie was released. starring Dolph Lundgren as He-Man, titled Masters of the Universe. That. movie started and ended on Eternia, but. it spent most of its time on Earth with. a young Courteney Cox, still early in. her career, playing an Earth girl whose. parents recently died, and who, along. with her boyfriend, find a cosmic key. from Eternia that Skeletor wants to use. to open gateways to other worlds and. become a master of the universe. The. filmmakers for that one reportedly. wanted to spend a lot more time on. Eternia, but ran out of money because. that was mostly before CGI, so they were. creating those sets practically. So,

with this movie, we finally get to see. all of Eternia in its magical glory. And. Adam speaks of it reverently, remembering it with the fondness of a. kid who longs to go back. Then he talks. about Castle Grayskull, which looks. awesome and exactly like it did in the. cartoon. Despite this being a giant. skull, it's actually the fortress of the. good guys, which was very confusing when. I was little. The reason it looks so. scary was actually explained in a. read-along book. Basically, a bunch of. magical elders foresaw the evil that was. coming, combined their magic into one. powerful orb, put that orb inside the.

Hall of Knowing, then changed the hall. into the scary Castle Grayskull to. protect the orb and frighten off. looky-loos so they wouldn't be tempted. to go inside. In the cartoon, Skeletor. was always attacking Grayskull because. it's where the Sorceress lived, and he. was always trying to get inside to find. its secrets and wield them for his own. evil purposes. Adam explains the Sword. of Power, which in the cartoon was what. gave him his, you know, powers. Towards. the end of the movie, we find out that. Adam actually contains the power within. himself. This movie is very self-aware. and knows that an audience of 2026 might. find the naming conventions of a cartoon.

from 1983 a little silly. So, throughout, they kind of poke fun at, in. a loving way, the idea of these things. being named stuff like the power. And. also the character names, which I'll get. into more later. We see the Sorceress, played by Morena Baccarin, who's from a. ton of stuff like Deadpool and Firefly. Before she was the Sorceress, she was a. woman named Teela Na. She can turn into. a magical falcon named Zoar. We see her. in that form later. It doesn't go into. this in the movie, but the Sorceress is. actually Teela's mother. In the animated. series, she had to give Teela to. Man-At-Arms to raise her for her own. protection. Then it cuts to young Adam,

who's small for his age and doesn't want. to train to fight. In the cartoon, only. a few people knew that Adam and He-Man. were the same person. They make a joke. about this at the end of the movie. And. when he was just Adam, he often had to. find reasons to avoid fights and. conflicts, much to his father King. Randor's dismay. But really, it was. because he had to go and transform into. He-Man. Everyone was always giving Adam. crap about how he'd run away from danger. and just hang out all day playing with. Cringer, which is what young Adam says. he wants to do here. Young Adam is. played by Arty Wilkinson Hunt. Adam is. with his mother, Queen Marlena. She's. actually an astronaut from Earth who got.

thrown off course and end up on Eternia. Actually, we learned her backstory in. the same episode of the cartoon where it. was revealed that the Sorceress is. Teela's mom. The episode was titled. Teela's Quest, and it was written by. Paul Dini, who would go on to develop my. favorite animated show, Batman: The. Animated [music] Series. Marlena's last. name is Glenn, which we later see Adam. adopt when he's on Earth. The original. writers probably gave her that name as a. nod to astronaut John Glenn. Adam tells. his mother that he's too small to fight. and has poor hand-eye coordination. And. we meet baby Cringer. Oh my god, I love.

baby Cringer so much. There was no. Cringer in the 1987 movie because it. would have been too hard to have him. back then, so I'm so happy we get him in. this one. Adam goes to arms training. with Duncan, aka Man-At-Arms, played by. Idris Elba, and his adopted daughter. Teela, who's already a pretty badass. fighter and is the only one willing to. partner with Adam. When Teela grows up, she'll go on to be the royal palace's. captain of the guard. We also get a look. at young Deena. Adult Adam will remind. her later on how much she used to push. him around. This character wasn't in any. of the cartoons or live-action movies,

but she's a very obscure one from the. comics. Adult Deena is played by stunt. performer Krystian Bettridge. King. Randor, played by Ron Funches James. Purefoy, sees Adam messing around during. training and tries to teach him a. lesson, telling him that this world is. no place for the weak. And then he walks. off disappointed as Duncan tells Adam to. get up because when you fall, it is your. chance to stand tall. Words adult Adam. will later repeat back to him. Teela. tries to cheer Adam up, but Skeletor's. forces attack and they fly in in all. these ships from the cartoon. The ones. that kind of look like they have firefly. wings are fright fighters. There's also.

some Roton ships and they had a toy of. this one back in the day. The door blows. in and we see a whole bunch of villains. There's Tri-Klops, he's from the. original cartoon, one of Skeletor's OG. minions. He has a rotating thing on his. head with different eyes and each eye. had a different power. Like one could. see through solid objects, another could. see in the dark, that kind of thing. There's also Beast Man, another OG. minion. His thing was, you know, he was. a man who's also a beast, but he could. also communicate with all manner of. creatures. He was much abused by. Skeletor. There was also a Beast Man in. the 1987 movie. The guy with spikes all.

over is Spikor. He was introduced in the. OG cartoon. The devil-looking big guy is. Goat Man. He actually appeared in a. Golden Books issue and then later we saw. him super briefly in 2021's Revelation. series on Netflix. And this, I love. this. The demon-looking guy with the. white flowing hair is Karg. Karg was not. in the animated series. He was actually. created for the 1987 movie and his. design here looks almost exactly like it. did in that one. So this was a nice. surprise because I did not think we'd. see Karg. He's a little smarter than the.

average Skeletor minion and was a. commander in his army. On the good guy. side, we see Ram Man from the OG series. He's a battering ram guy and my brother. and I still have his toy. His legs. spring out like he does here. Then. there's Mekaneck, he can stretch his. bionic neck out and use it to fight. His. toy had a neck that sprung out. Honestly, the toys were all bangers. They usually didn't work like they were. supposed to, but they looked great and. they were fun as hell to play with. And. there's Fisto, of course, whose name is. a great source of humor in this movie. and in memes. We later find out that it. was Adam who came up with these names. since he left Eternia as a kid and.

didn't actually know their real names. and he gets roasted for these choices. He's also the same one who dubs himself. He-Man. Duncan promises Randor that. he'll protect them, a promise that will. haunt him for the next 15 years. Then he. faces off against Trap Jaw, a. fan-favorite character people were. bummed was left out of the original. movie. Actually, Karg was written to be. a replacement for him in that movie. since his design was too difficult to. pull off. He's an OG Skeletor villain. going back to the animated pilot, and. his whole thing was he was a weapons. expert, and his arm was detachable so. you could put different weapons on there. with the toy. And he also had a metal.

jaw that could bite through things. Duncan loses this fight, although he. gets a lot of good licks in first. against the army. The fight scenes in. this movie are epic, and the soundtrack. is even better, and everything works. together to give it a heavy metal '80s. throwback vibe. Also, I love that they. give Duncan his toy-accurate mace. On. the bridge, King Randor, Queen Marlena, and Prince Adam are confronted by. Skeletor. And I hate to say it, but. creep-ass Jared Leto ate this role up. Seriously, he's like the best part of. the movie. He understood the assignment, just like Frank Langella did before him. playing Skeletor in the 1987 version.

The design is perfect. I love his little. red eyes darting around. This Skeletor. is the perfect mix of evil, camp, and. humor, exactly like the cartoon, slipping seamlessly from threatening to. petulant child. And I love that this. movie takes us back to a simpler time. when villains weren't complex. They. could just be evil so our Saturday. morning kid brains could understand. No. shades of gray here. Director Travis. Knight has said that he didn't want to. do this movie with an ironic sense of. humor, stating, "We do live in an age of. detachment, of irony, of arms-length.

judgment, and that's not how I approach. any of my work. I have sincere love for. everything I do." Knight directed the. similarly glorious Bumblebee movie, the. best of the recent live-action. Transformers films, in my opinion. And. he also has a big hand over at Laika. animation studio, which does stop-motion. in one of my favorite movies, Coraline. Knight's directing their upcoming. Wildwood, and if you haven't watched the. trailer, go check it out because it. looks great. On the bridge, we also meet. Evil-Lyn, played by Allyson Brie, who. also understood the assignment. A lot of. people don't realize that Evil-Lyn has. white hair underneath the black.

headpiece she wears since she only took. the headpiece off once during the. original cartoon run. Marlena and Randor. are captured by Skeletor, who spends the. next 15 years searching for the sword. and letting Eternia fall into a dismal. state. On the journey through the. wormhole, Adam loses track of the sword. And then we're in present day in. Oklahoma City with Adam just having. finished telling his date this whole. story. And girl, yes, run out of there. because if this were the real world, a. dude who believes all of this is going.

to chop you up in the middle of the. night. Adam returns home and his. roommate loves to watch movies like The. Notebook and 10 Things I Hate About You. in secret because one of the themes of. this movie is the different forms. masculinity and manliness takes and what. they can look like. All over Adam's. bedroom are hand-drawn pictures of the. things and people he remembers from. Eternia and a lot of the characters in. the pictures are wearing their cartoon. colors. Adam's mundane day job kind of. sucks. He works in HR and his boss Suzy, played by comedian Sasheer Zamata, is. all about talking through things using. corporate speak including making. everyone repeat "I have the power to be.

the best version of myself." I love the. stuff this movie glosses over like we. don't really know what this company does. or what happened to Adam after he landed. on Earth and it was smart to leave that. stuff out because the audience doesn't. need to know and it saves more time for. cool fights. At work, Adam wears a pink. button-up shirt with a white shirt. underneath in homage to his pink tunic. with white shirt underneath from the. cartoon. As a worker complains to him. about an HR issue, he uploads a drawing. of the power sword to the internet to. try and track it down. And then we get. the scene OG movie fans are going to go. nuts for. Adam goes to the gym but isn't.

sure how to best use the free weights. So who does he ask for advice but Dolph. Lundgren, credited only as Macho Man. They have a meta conversation which. includes Lundgren telling Adam, "You're. taking my spot." And then right before. he leaves, he tells Adam, "Good journey, kid." and he makes this hand motion and. the people in my theater and I lost our. damn minds. This was how Eternians in. the movie parted ways. They don't say. goodbye, they say good journey. Someone. finds Adam's sword and he goes to a. comics and toy shop called The Fright. Zone which has a very skeletal looking. skull for a logo. The Fright Zone is.

also the name of He-Man villain Hordak's. lair. There is a sweet Fright Zone. playset that much to our dismay, my. brother and I did not own when we were. little. There are a lot of fun Easter. eggs throughout this whole scene. Inside. the store, the sword is found attached. to a very Conan the Barbarian coded. statue. There have been rumors for years. that Mattel designed their original. He-Man toy line on Conan. The woman who. works the store calls the statue Torrak. and Torrak was actually an early concept. design of the He-Man toy designed by. Mark Taylor. Also, the second guy Adam. approaches about his sword grabs a big. Jim toy. This is a little bit of a deep.

nerd cut. Before He-Man, Mattel had a. line of toys called Big Jim toys, and. they used the molds for those toys to. create the He-Man toys. So, Cringer/Battle Cat was made using the. Big Jim tiger just repainted. Adam bolts. with the sword and gets picked up by the. cops, and one of them says, "Nice sword, Highlander." There's a Highlander remake. in the works at Amazon MGM Studios right. now, reportedly starring Henry Cavill. And at one point in this movie, you can. hear a little bit of a Highlander theme. play. A guy next to the police car in a. purple convertible listens to 1990s I've.

Got the Power by Snap, making Adam do a. double take. The very purple color is. probably a nod to Panthor, Skeletor's. big purple panther that he would. sometimes ride. Panthor was his version. of Battle Cat. And then we get another. cheer out loud moment when What's Up by. 4 Non Blondes starts playing, which is. the song in the He-Man memes that he. dances to. Nicholas Galitzine actually. just hilariously recreated that meme. Beast Man chases Adam to get the sword, but he's saved by Teela, played by. Camila Mendes, wearing some. painful-looking blue contacts. Beast Man. gets hit by an Amazon Prime van because, of course, this is an Amazon movie.

Teela gets to her ship, and it's an. updated Talon Fighter. The cartoon. version was a lot more colorful. There's. a woman in the crowd here with a classic. He-Man '80s do, the blonde hair with the. bangs and all that. Teela and Adam fly. back to Eternia, which is looking rough. Pig Boy goes to wake up Skeletor, and I. love that they include Pig Boy in this. movie because in the 1987 film, Pig Boy. was played by a kid who won a contest to. appear in the movie. By the time the. contest was finished and a winner was. announced, all the Earth stuff had been. shot, so the kid had to play Pig Boy and. hand Skeletor his staff, and he was. pretty much unrecognizable. These are.

the kinds of details that '87 movie fans. go nuts for. This all happens at Snake. Mountain, Skeletor's villain lair, and. let me tell you, I did have the Snake. Mountain playset, and it was awesome. Teela brings Adam to the makeshift. underground city where the survivors and. rebels have been living since he left, and hilariously, none of them know who. he is. And he doesn't win them over when. he tells them all the nicknames he has. for them. In addition to the ones we met. earlier, there's also Moss Man, who they. threw in just so Skeletor could kill. him. He died really fast in Revelation. as well. Moss Man's specialty, in. addition to literally being made of. moss, was that he could camouflage.

himself to blend in. Duncan's failure. years earlier has turned him into an old. drunk, and mopping up his cell is. Roboto, gender swapped from the cartoon. here and voiced by Kristen Wiig. Fans. love Roboto, and the toy was rad as hell. because you could see all the internal. gears and everything moving around, which we get to see at the end of the. movie once Duncan rebuilds her. The. rebels are ambushed by Tri-Klops and. Skeletor's forces. Adam tries to talk. things out with Trap Jaw using his HR. training, and it goes about as well as. you'd expect. But, a vision from the. Sorceress forces Adam to He-Man up, and. we finally get the moment we've been.

waiting for. This transformation does not disappoint. In the cartoon's opening, the He-Man. transformation always happened in front. of Castle Grayskull, and here an image. of the castle can be seen behind him. during the color blast. Adam rips Trap. Jaw's weapon arm off, then uses it to. take out the henchmen. Then, he, Teela, Duncan, and Roboto take the sword and. skedaddle. They're chased by Skeletor's. minions, and again, this chase scene. feels like it's right out of the. cartoon. At one point, He-Man even jumps. on the Sky Sled, which he used a ton of. in the OG series anytime there was a.

chase. Skeletor captures the rebels and. then sends a message to Adam that his. parents are alive, and Skeletor will let. Adam see them if he brings the sword to. him at Snake Mountain. When they get. there, Duncan, Teela, and Roboto get. thrown into the dungeon with the others. while Adam goes to the throne room to. see Skeletor. And, I love that Skeletor. and Evil-Lyn have an SNL hot tub couple. vibe going on, where they both think. Adam is sexy and kind of want to have a. threesome with him. At one point, Adam. passes by a big gorilla-looking thing. hung up as a trophy with other bones and. stuff, and this has got to be a Gygor. nod. He was an unreleased toy that never.

ended up appearing in the cartoon, but. was a repaint of a Big Jim gorilla toy. The toy was eventually released when. Mattel did their Classics line. Again, another deep cut nerd Easter egg here. Adam reunites with his father, but. Skeletor reveals that this was all a. trap, obviously, and he unleashes his. main henchman. Adam epically kicks their. asses again, set against an awesome. guitar riff. These riffs were actually. designed by legendary Queen guitarist. Brian May, who teamed up with composer. Daniel Pemberton to create them. This. makes the later Queen needle drop moment.

even better in my opinion. Before Adam. can finish off Skeletor, Evilyn freezes. him with a spell. He manages to break. free but causes a cave-in killing his. father, but not before Randor tells him. that he was hard on him when he was. younger because he wanted to protect him. and that he should have just let Adam be. Adam. Adam gets knocked out and thrown. in the dungeons, but the sword. hilariously doesn't work for Skeletor. Evilyn says if they return the sword to. Castle Grayskull, she can perform a. spell to get it to work. Adam has a. heart-to-heart with Duncan and he. reunites with his mom, but more. importantly with Cringer. Then he. rallies the rebels who are confused by. his HR workplace motivational speech,

but he recalls the advice Dolph Lundgren. gave him and they work together to bust. out. And then we get that Queen Princes. of the Universe needle drop moment as. our heroes do the hero walk, but it's. cut short because they're coughing from. all the rubble dust they kicked up. Skeletor flies to Grayskull in the. Collector, his ship from cartoon that. looks like his skull head. But the. rebels are close behind and everyone. gets an awesome fight move scene. utilizing their stunt performer skills. We get a classic Cringer moment where he. has to be talked into going into battle, something that happened at least once an. episode in the cartoon. He asks, "Shouldn't I be wearing armor or.

something?" An obvious nod to his. cartoon look as Battle Cat. When Adam. transformed into He-Man, Cringer also. transformed into Battle Cat complete. with armor. But here Cringer goes in. just as him, armorless for now. Although. Adam does tell him he's a Battle Cat. He. faces off with Beast Man while Teela. takes on Evilyn. Outside Duncan and. Roboto guard the bridge, but Roboto gets. blown up by Trap Jaw, so Duncan goes in. for a rematch and this time he wins and. shoves a grenade into Trap Jaw's mouth. Skeletor uses his Havoc Staff to break. the Power Sword and performs a mental. attack on Adam. Skeletor cycles through.

some of his memories, scenes we saw. earlier in the film. Adam is back in the. gym, but this time Skeletor is there gym. bro heavy lifting and surrounded by. groupies wearing a Nike sweatshirt. Travis Knight is the son of Nike. co-founder Phil Knight. The sweatshirt. is purple, naturally. Then he's there on. Adam's date in a suit with a purple tie. dragging him through the restaurant. Then he's there at his job looking like. Bill Lumbergh in Office Space. Then back. in the real world, Skeletor uses a piece. of the broken sword to stab Adam. It's. then that Adam learns from the Sorceress. that he had the power inside him all. along. He transforms, repairing the.

sword, and then we get the most epic. fight scenes. Skeletor with the Havoc. Staff versus He-Man with the Power. Sword, which is always a good time. This. is actually how the 1987 fight went. down, too. Although this fight is. choreographed way better. The 1987 film. had run out of money at this point, and. the director paid out of pocket to film. that fight scene with a skeleton crew. and just a couple main actors. Before. they fight, Adam tries talking to. Skeletor, but Skeletor asserts that he. has no deeper motivation for being like. this. He's just a villain, and hell. yeah, dude. Then Adam destroys him and. punches his skull head straight off.

Okay, actually he grabs the Havoc Staff, overloading its power, and sending that. power back into Skeletor. So the good. guys win and the bad guys are defeated, and 6 months later everyone is in their. cartoon and comics-accurate costumes. Duncan rebuilt Roboto, now with her. gears visible, and the good guys throw. their heads back and laugh for way too. long like they always did at the end of. the cartoon. There's a rumor that Merman. appears somewhere in the scene, but I. couldn't spot him when I was in the. movie theater. And then He-Man rides. Battle Cat, now with armor, into battle, pausing to do their famous pose. This. movie has three post-credit scenes. The.

first features Orko in his live-action. debut giving the lesson of the movie. Every cartoon episode would have a scene. at the very end where someone did this, and they ranged from lessons like don't. talk to strangers to adoptive parents. love their kids a lot. Orko was supposed. to appear in the 1987 movie, but they. couldn't figure out how to do him using. the visual effects they had at the time, so he was replaced by the character. Gwildor, who was played by Billy Barty. The mid-credit scene is the live-action. debut of She-Ra. She's He-Man's. long-lost twin sister, which is why. Queen Marlena is talking about how she. worries for both of them, and maybe.

she'll return one day. Anyone who. remembers the cartoon and hears the. music here knew what was coming. The. actress who portrayed She-Ra here. actually posted herself in the costume. on her Instagram the day the movie came. out and people were super pissed that. she spoiled such a huge moment. She. eventually took that post down so I. assume the studio intervened and asked. her to. And the final post-credit scene. at the very, very end has Evelyn going. back for Skeletor's skull head and we. hear him laugh because this dude is not. really dead and gone. >> [laughter]. >> The 1987 film had a similar post-credit. scene because Skeletor always comes.
