HOUSE OF THE DRAGON S3E08 BREAKDOWN: Easter Eggs & Details You Missed!
House of the Dragon season 3 finale. embroidery hides all the secrets. And. since HBO released the full thing the. day after the finale, we have decoded. all of its secrets. Welcome back to New. Rockstars. I'm Eric Boss and this is a. complete breakdown of House of the. Dragon season 3 episode 8, the season 3. finale, The Treasons of Tumbleton. From. Raineer's fascist ascent to Helena's. prophetic fall to the wild things we. learn about Alice Rivers this episode, there's really so much to dig into. changes from the book and just. interesting little clues for how this.
dance will all come to an end next. season. As always, any speculation or. spoilers from the book beyond what. happens in this episode, I will save all. of that for the spoiler dungeon section. at the end of this video. Thank you so. much for your patience waiting an extra. day for this episode. HBO did not give. us an early press screener for this. episode because New Rockstars doesn't. have like an official news website that. we're attached to. So, it took us a. little bit longer to get this one out, but trust me, we're going to make the. wait worth it in this analysis. Okay, the tapestry animation that we've seen. open every episode since the beginning. of season 2 has been officially. confirmed this episode to be part of the.
artistic vision and puzzle assembly of. our sweet, sweet bug girl, Helena. So, now we must wonder, will season 4 open. with a completely different visual style. if our chief embroiderer is dead? Or. could someone like Princess Chiara. perhaps pick up the embroidery of her. mother's legacy? And yes, we actually. now have Helena's full tapestry. officially released online since the. episode came out. And there are so many. fun secrets and Easter eggs that we're. going to get to at the end of this. video. But updates to the opening. credits tapestry in this finale episode. include this shot of soldiers of House. Mutin being torched by Sunfire as we saw.
at the end of episode 7. And fire. consumes Aegon with his arms. outstretched with Sunfire behind him. burning the part of his face that got. cooked at the battle of Rook's Rest in. season 2. And then as we cut outward. from Aegon, we see that fire and blood. red flame forms a kind of saintly halo. around his head. Kind of like the old. gods of Valyria are anointing his. resurrection. Yeah, it's not just the. sevenfaced god of Westeros that is. approving of this king. It's the old. gods that Reineer claims to be backing. her. And then from Aegon's feet, red. flames shoot outward toward the black. Targaryen sigil and eventually to the.
series logo. We begin this episode with. Orhile carrying an unrolled missive from. a raven forming the realm of Aegon and. Sunfire's return. The fact that this is. coming to Reineer from Orahile, not her. mistress of whispers, is part of the. reason why Mazzaria gets sent packing. this episode. Hyperventilating, Reara. tells her uncle husband, >> "He is risen.". >> This is how Christians talk about Jesus. on Easter Sunday. And for Reara, she's. realizing she now has to compete with a. holy miracle. While the dawning sunlight. just peaks through the windows, Rara is. already spiraling at the idea of the.
small folk turning against her, proclaiming Aegon's return as a sign. from the gods, gathering outside the. Grand Sept. I mean, could word have. traveled that fast in these morning. hours? Is Rineer fretting with all of. these servants around the Red Keep, only. helping this word of mouth of Aegon's. return spread faster? But remember, Orman's invisible network of faceless. men in King's Landing are doing their. thing. When Reineer is on her way to the. Sept later, she sees a fresh Queen of. the Bastard sign that must have been. written by someone literate that. morning. So, it makes sense that word. would be traveling this fast. Rea. gestures out the open window when she.
speaks of the Grand Sept. Her final. gesture of this season will be to close. the window of Helena's chamber, closing. off her view of that same sept. Damon. says that these seven gods are lesser. gods with no say of what's to come. Indeed, while Damon exercises the power. of old Valyria with the blood worm. between his legs, he has also witnessed. the power of the old gods of Westeros. during his time at Harrenhal in season. 2, a prophecy that would show a future. descendant, Daenerys Targaryen. So for. Damon, of the three sources of sacred. power he's been a part of in his life, the seven gods of the endals would be.
the most trivial to him. Rea curses her. father, calling him by his name, Bizeris, and says that the prophetic. dream he shared with her continues to. plague her, but demon switches to the. Valyrian language. The intimate language. shared between these two to get her to. focus and reclaim this latest setback is. just yet another challenge to prove. herself. This scene began with close-ups. of demon's armor and writing leathers, and that's what Reineer focuses on now. as she studies herself. Continuing in. Valyrian, she orders to set a watch for. Sunfire and Vaggar to have Hugh and. Vermathor guard King's Landing from. outside the dragon pit. Why outside the.
dragon pit? Well, currently the dragon. pit contains a number of other dragons, including Dreamfire and Joffrey's. dragon. So, if Vaggar and Sunfire were. to get there, uh, that would be very. dangerous. But then we get this little. moment before the subtitles kick in. I. like how we hear her say Tumblr and. Valyrian. But due to the sentence structure of. Valyrian, it seems like the object of. the sentence is spoken first. So Reineer. kept Damon in a bit of suspense as she. told him what exactly he'd be doing at. Tumbleton. She warns Damon that the.
realm is watching so to only target High. Towers in his door to door raid of the. town. I think it might just be the. lighting of the scene, but the palenness. of Rineer's face and the puffy pinkiness. under her eyes from her crying. And as. she promises to cut out Aegon's false. heart herself, don't her eyes look. somewhat lavender? I mean, having purple. eyes is how the Targaryenss are. described in George R. Martin's text. Emma Darcy and Matt Smith talks about. how whenever they speak Valyrian on the. show, they visualize where on the script. pages their lines are. And Emma. specifically puts their script pages up. on the walls of their trailer, which. made Matt laugh because when Emma speaks.
their Valyrian lines, they're speaking. to a wall, not to him. So, I love how. this episode really ends by circling. back to another one of these rooms with. the same view of the Sept and Reineer. closing the windows as a way of showing. the walls of this red keep closing in on. her cuz every time she's talking, she is. talking to a wall, a flat surface. It's. making her feel claustrophobic. Baya. pleads with Reineer to let her go on a. rescue mission for Corass before the. battle begins and calls her out for the. way that she treats her subjects as. tools to be wielded. Rea shoots back. that she could have abandoned Ba after. the gullet. >> Perhaps,
>> but you need my dragon. >> Rea [snorts] used to walk this corridor. seeing her son Jayce's ghost. Now she. grabs Jace betro's mouth like this. Rea. warns that insulence runs through Baya's. blood. Same for Raina. I assume she's. talking about their father Damon always. going rogue and acting defiantly. Orman. tells Darren that he has to be kned. before he becomes king. That's not. normally part of the Westerosi custom. Viseris the first wasn't kned. Neither. was his son Aegon II. But Orund with. Darren is trying to establish a. restoration of the old ways of Oldtown.
And generally the tradition of knighting. and the blessings of the seven gods as. part of those vows is part of that. culture. The pledges Orman gives Darren. don't include the typical in the name of. the father I charge you to be brave, etc., etc. the phrasing that we've seen. in nighting ceremonies earlier this. season and on a night of the seven. kingdoms, but we do hear Orman charging. him to protect all women and children. A. dark bit of irony considering Orand is. currently ordering his men to use the. young boys of Tumbleton as human. shields. The breaking of the basic. decency vowed to protect the young and. children is something that all. characters in this episode are guilty.
of. It's the same thing that Alice. Rivers was tirelessly working to try to. avoid, cursing her own body and the same. thing that the modern people, the modern. parents of this society are not as. concerned with. that is cursing all of. them. Orman proclaims Darren, "Sir. Darren the Daring," a moniker that. Darren earns after the actual battle. actions he takes in the book. We see. Sleton from the point of view of. Silverwing. As she turns from the city. over to the approaching army of the. Blacks, Olf drunkenly reassures the. Tumbleton folks in this tavern that. Damon won't use his dragon on the city. I assume this place is the Body Badger,
an inn in the town of Tumbleton that. Fire and Blood mentions Olikkes to. frequent. Sadly for these folks, while. Caraxis sees dragon fire on the city's. limited to the gate, Ol himself will. order Jakarus on many civilian stretches. of the city. Rea holds her father's. crown as she stands over Vizer's model. of old Valyria. These will be the final. hours in this episode when we see Rea. with any kind of semblance to her. peaceful father. She will be leaving. this legacy behind shortly after this as. she prepares to suit up in battle armor. After using Mazzaria as a sex toy last. episode, Reara has basically now called.
her an Uber, having Alinda tell her that. she's about to sail to Pentos on the. mermaid's kiss. So the mermaid's kiss is. a boat that gets mentioned in fire and. blood when it comes to a certain voyage. to drift mark and in a dance with. dragons. The mermaid's kiss is a ship in. Volantis headed to marine and it could. be the same ship. Elinda says Mosaria. will get gold and servants. Not sure. where Rineer is going to get this gold. considering Tylen Lannister still hasn't. been found. Actually, I do wonder where. Aegon left Thailand in this episode. after he took off on Sunfire. Maybe. there was a terrifying flight over to. Casterly Rock to drop him off there. first. It seems as though Aegon's.
surprising return was just something. Rara expected her mistress of whispers. to know something about. This would have. been the latest intelligence failure. after Orman's vast network of faceless. men spies since Damon and Misaria have. been at odds all season by Rea now. embracing everything Damon I guess. Mazaria has just got to go and hopefully. she never comes back. This character. sucks. She's miscast and all the writing. they do for her sucks. Helena sits alone. in the garden as we look up at her. I. imagine from the point of view of the. Nathy butterfly cocoon. The note in. Helena's book about that butterfly was.
that it foretold death as it does for. Helena in this episode. The fact that it. hasn't hatched from the cocoon yet, I. think is interpreted by Helena as a. portant of her own coming death. When. she enters the courtyard, she goes into. a kind of trance as she sees the gray. mare from her vision in episode 7. And. the sound cuts out aside for some wintry. gusts. Her hopeless state is affirmed by. Misaria telling her that Reineer will. never release her. And while the news. that Aegon has returned with Sunfire. should reassure her, for Helena, this. just means more dragonfire and more. death. Like Aegon still being alive is. very bad news for her and very bad news.
for Rea because it means Rea is going to. lose her mind if Reara could have just. had simple peace. Helena and her kids. might have had a chance to raise some. chickens. But not if the civil war is. only halfway over. Haymon sleeps hearing. the conversation he had with his brother. Aegon in season 2. >> I remember. nothing. This was from season 2 episode. 6 when Aean asked Aegon what he. remembered from the end of the battle of. Rook's Rest and when Aean stepped up. ready to finish him off. Later in that. episode Aegon still struggling from his.
wounds begged help me. Aean recalled. this memory and him nearly falling into. death from his mother's poisoning him. with nightshade. Being humbled by this. experience has made him feel guilty for. assuming he should claim the throne from. Aegon. Aean considers himself cursed for. kinslaying. But Alice tells him what it. really means to be cursed by finally. [laughter] revealing her incredible. past. She was the lady and queen of. House Horror, the wife of King Haron the. Black, King of the Isles and the Rivers. and Lord of Harrenhal before Aegon's. invasion. When she talked about Heron. the Black was cruel, she was talking. about her husband. And remember, Alice.
called herself a lady of the water. Now. that makes sense. As the wife of a. former lord of the Iron Islands, she. would be well familiar with the sea. Alice says one of Heron's children did. survive Bolyrian's dragon fire when. Aegon sacked Harrenhal, a boy who was. burned and clinging to life after. maesters from across the seven kingdoms. could not help. Alice says she turned to. older cures. >> So she turned to older cures. She. uncovered incantations more ancient than. the land. She treated with things that. lived in the forest. >> So this explains that antler green man. we keep seeing around this area. Alice.
is referring to the magic of the. children of the forest whose magic does. predate much of the geography of. modernday Westeros. Their war with the. first men shaped the actual land of the. continent. Alice says that none of this. magic could save her son, but even. delving into these spells cursed her to. never age and remain confined to. Harrenhal in its nearby grounds, stripped of her name, her title or. castle, and forced to serve the rotating. group of lords who come to claim it. Now, we have seen the children of the. forest operate in such magic before. The. three-eyed raven would have been 125 to. 126 years old, even though on the HBO.
series, he said he was waiting in that. cave for a thousand years. The children. of the forest, of course, also use a. dragon glass dagger to make the ageless. Night King. It's tragic that Alice still. had to live out this punishment even. though she didn't get any benefit out of. the children of the forest's magic. Maybe those magical beings see a use in. an ageless human being confined to. Harrenhal, someone who was there since. before the conquest. So, this would put. Alice at over 150 years old. The current. year is 130 AC and she would have been. an adult at year zero of Aegon's. conquest. And of course, that would.
explain why she was there when the past. writer of Dreamfire, Rea, grew old at. this castle. Alice also would have been. present at the great council of 101 in. the opening scene of this series. The. writers of this HBO series have invented. this whole backstory for Alice based on. a few cryptic lines about the character. from George R. Martin's fire and blood. text. How she was claimed to be 40 years. old but looked far younger and claims. from stepped in Eustace that she was a. woods witch while Mushroom claimed she. was from the older generation and bathed. in maiden's blood to remain youthful. I. love this reveal on the show. It's one. addition by the writers to George R.
Martin's lore that opens up so many. possibilities. Like the fact that Alice. Rivers never ages has me now wondering. if she could appear in A Night of the. Seven Kingdoms, which takes place. decades after this. And I definitely. think we're going to see her in this. Aegon's Conquest movie that they're. developing. I mean, she was there during. all of those events. Rea takes the. embroidery out of Helena's hands and. sets it on the floor, ignoring the. prophecies that she's trying to pry out. of Helena's words. Beside them on the. table is that cage that contained. Helena's caterpillar. Helena says that. Viseris would hate Rea for what she's. doing, which really stings the queen. Helena interjects with a bug.
observation. >> Do it. There's a beetle that emerges on. the cusp of summer. Has lots of colors, blue, gold, purples. It looks like a. turtle. >> This sounds like a realworld beetle. called an imperial tortoise beetle. Stolas Imperialis. It does look awesome. Helena brings this up as an example of. the stop and smell the roses everyday. beauty that Helena fills her cup with. that Rea has no time for. While we could. try to look at this beetle as another. symbolic piece of Helena's dreams, I.
really think Helena actually likes this. beetle because for her, it doesn't. contain any metaphorical meaning for the. people in her world. It's just a cool. colorful beetle that looks like a turtle. and hatches in the summertime. The one. insect related cool thing about King's. Landing. And it eats waste, something. that King's Landing normally only piles. up. And best of all, it prophesizes. nothing. And that would be awesome to. her. And from a meta perspective, this. is a rare example, I think, of a Helena. related detail on the show where I just. think it's better not to overthink it. and just appreciate it for its surface.
value and aesthetic beauty. I think if. you try to analyze the symbolic meaning. of this tortoise beetle, you're kind of. missing the plot a bit. I mean, Helena. spends all of her time embroidering and. dreaming, trying to make her visions. into something that comes close to the. elegant natural beauty of this beetle. Adam confronts his brother Alan on. directly carrying out Reneer's bidding. and informs him that BA has been. confined to the keep. No reaction from. Allen. I think this is why the writers. chose to have Adam learn of the kiss. between Baya and Allen. They wanted to. create this divide between the brothers. as Adam is shocked at the brother who. won the heart of the woman he liked so.
callously disregards her well-being. Now. Adam sneers. >> glorious ascent for a bastard. >> But Allan says he has no ambition but to. discharge his duty. As a dragon rider, Adam does have loftier ideals and more. of a rogue immorality. All dragon riders. forget that most people of this realm. don't have the luxury to defy orders and. follow their hearts. After ordering. Helena force-fed, Reineer now emerges. from the darkness with her new battle. armor. The shoulder puldrons and cape. clasp all evoke dragon wings with head. covering chain mail evoking Jon of Arc. with her father's crown at top it all. It's actually believed that Reineer.
might be wearing the battle armor of. Visenya, the sister wife to Aegon the. Conqueror who rode Vagar. Vzena was the. older sister, but her younger brother. Aegon was the heir. Rea wants to reforge. herself in the tradition of female. dragon riding conquerors. You'll notice. that Reineer wears this specific makeup. on her eyes that you could consider to. be Harley Quinnesque in nature, but Emma. Darcy likened this makeup in this full. armored getup as Reara's war paint. >> And we thought, what can we do? And it. was [music] like that sort of dragon. blood red. I had to go, she had to go. And where we landed was this sort of.
gesture in a [music] red pigment that. just runs through the eye. In the end, it was very simple. And I always think. some of the simple things look the. strongest. >> I like it. It's all part of a theatrical. display to evoke power, a direct. contrast to the kind of humanitarian who. handed out the lunchables in front of. the Sept. Prince Joffrey joins Reineer. at her side, the first time we've seen. them together this season. And even his. placement here is part of the theatrical. display. Rea wants to show all who see. her that her line is secure. She has a.
male heir. I also wonder if Rene chose. to cover her silver hair with chain mail. and darken her eyes so that she wouldn't. have as much of a contrast in visual. appearance to her hair. freakish silver. hair was previously part of the power. pageantry of the Targaryenss. Now. Raineira obscures hers. She even gave. Joffrey his own little crown with a. single ruby in the center. She doesn't. want there to be any confusion as to. this kid's status. Again, it's another. example of using children, putting them. in harm's way to more strategically. position yourself. Gwane and Darren look. out at the River Host from the Tumbleton.
Battlements as Darren frets. I love the. little detail of him picking at his. fingers, the nervous tick he inherited. from his mother, Allison. Orund orders. boys in the battlements. Put the boys to. the front. They must be seen. >> Yes, it is cruel and despicable to use. boys as human shields, but it's an. interesting comparison following a scene. where Ray Nero was using her son around. the same age to better position herself. Now, I was trying to figure out why. things are so chaotic on the streets of. King's Landing when Misaria is being. transported to the mermaid's kiss for. her to be able to slip away like this. I. think since the Goldcloak numbers have. dropped and currently the back of Valion.
soldiers who are there to replace the. Goldcloak have been redeployed by Allen. as part of Rea's escort to the Sept. All. of that has led to just more commotion. on the streets than usual. On the way to. the Sept, Reara tells Joffrey the same. song of ice and fire speech that Vizeris. told her when she was named heir and she. says was told of Vizeris by the old. king, referring to Vizeris's grandfather. and predecessor Jiharis the first who. died at a very old age. Wayne tries to. sue for peace by offering Corass in. hopes of avoiding a bloody battle and. proposes to divide Westeros so that. Darren could rule from Oldtown and the. General Reach area while Reara rules.
over the Crownlands, the Riverlands, and. North and the Veil. Gwane says that. before Aegon the Conqueror, the Seven. Kingdoms were divided but at peace. An. interesting contrast to Reara later. claiming that Aegon the Conqueror. brought unity to a fractured time. I. find this proposal from Wayne to be. crazy and stupid. Like, did he really. expect it to work to ride out with no. backup with a blade to Corus' back while. surrounded by his enemies? Hell, even. Corless down a finger. It's still twice. the height of Gwane, it could probably. push away from him. So, at first, I was. wondering, was this subplot really just. born out of having underbaked storylines.
for Corass and Gwain and arguably Damon. this season? Like, is this why we needed. to take Corass out on his pirate hunting. camp out that John Roxton knew the exact. location of? Like, do we in two episodes. on Corless related cliffhers to set up. this stupid scene? While I think I'm. being too hard on it, I think this. episode in particular really wants to. remind us that the Targaryen dynasty is. still relatively recent history in the. eyes of the people of this continent and. that there are sentiments among people. in these kingdoms that they might be. better off self-governed instead of. being ruled by this messy dragon family.
with its internal strife. So the. proposal for an independent old town. ruled by Darren does also echo Alice. [ __ ] recalling a time when the Iron. Islands and Riverlands ruled. independently headquartered at. Harrenhal, a mud kingdom that she wants. to resurrect with Aean. Orund lectured. about how Dorne was able to stay. independent. And I'm sure there are. plenty of people in the north who would. prefer to stay independent. And Corass. even supports that position here, massaging the proposal to instead make. Darren warden of the south and lord. Paramount of the Reach instead of a. king. And he says to wed Darren to Rea. I was also trying to figure out when or.
if Corass knew about Raina's current. status. I guess with Orman Spy Network, word of anyone important arriving back. in King's Landing would have made its. way to Tumbleton. But it is weird that. Corus and Gwain knew that Raina was. found but were completely surprised to. learn Aegon and Sunfire were now back on. the board when we definitely saw Orand. learning that information. I think with. Damon, Corass, and Gwane, this season, the writers reposition the characters. from the passive backbenches the. characters were on during this period in. the text to these somewhat more active. maneuvering subplots that have not. always made logical sense this season.
Like, while it is in character for Damon. to choke Gway and turn down a chance for. peace so that he can spill as much blood. as he can in Rea's name, wouldn't it. make more sense for Damon to just kill. Gwane right here? Like killing every. high tower is what Reineer ordered Damon. to do rather than quicking Gwane back. behind the city walls because that. essentially frees Gwane to kill more of. his soldiers an hour from now. Meanwhile, Aean awakens to the sound of. a different dragon screeching through. the towers and halls of Harrenhal. Sunfire lands in the same hall right in. front of the raised deis where Jiharis. the first sat at the great council of. 101 in the opening scene of the series.
I love the sound of Sunfire exhaling and. growling as Aegon climbs off. [groaning]. It's kind of like a zombie moan, like a creature whose throat would be. damaged. Aegon slaps his younger brother. on the side of Aean's face with a. sapphire eye. >> I'm alive. >> Tonglin Carney is just amazing. This. season, he says this line with this. singongy tone. It's kind of like, here's. Eggy. Aemon with no vagar here to back.
him up. And having been stabbed by one. of the strongs and poisoned by his. mommy, has been beaten down to this. humble [music] place. And that is not. the vengeance Aegon was hoping to score. here. I really like the detail that. while Aegon doesn't notice the spooky. witch Alice Rivers at first, Sunfire. grunts and then Aegon notices Alice. Alice does live on empowered by a. certain curse from the Children of the. Forest, a rival magic to what the. dragons have. And I'm guessing dragons. just have a stronger radar for any other. kind of magic. Aegon plans to find.
Vaggar to go to Tumbleton to put Orund. and Darren in line and then take the. whole Green Army to march to King's. Landing and retake the Iron Throne from. Reneer. And we have these two. backto-back scenes of characters. threatening to put the other side's. heads on spikes as the only measure of. their satisfaction. Alice tries to. interject when Aegon says only when he's. seated back on the throne since remember. her plan with Aean is to arise a new. rule of Harrenhal as its own separate. mud kingdom with a line of descendants. from Aean one eye the dragon king and. the cursed widow queen who survived. Obian's fire. So maybe she thinks making. those descendants will break that curse. But my guess is that these two will not.
tell Aegon about the five dragon eggs at. Harrenhal. And that might have been what. Alice was warning Aean about in this. moment. Thanks to Vessie for sponsoring. today's video. Picking the right combo. of dragons and dragon riders you need to. secure the Iron Throne, that's hard. But. picking a pair of shoes that'll let you. say yes to whatever comes your way, that's easy. Vessies, I've had family in. town, and that means any sense of. routine I have is totally out the. window. Once I leave the house in the. morning, I've got to be ready to stay. out all day and prepared to say yes to. any spontaneous adventure that calls to.
us. What starts as a coffee run might. wind up leading to a hike, which might. lead into lunch, which leads into a trip. to the beach. Having one pair of shoes. that's good to go for all of those is. crucial. And that's why when I want to. be ready for anything, I wear vesties. Vessies are lightweight and breathable, which makes them perfect for hot summer. days in LA. Plus, they look nice. So, it's not like if we decide to go out to. dinner, I'm all of a sudden that guy. wearing flip-flops at the restaurant. In. addition to being versatile, they're. also comfortable enough to wear all day. long. My go-to pair lately has been the. Weekend Chelsea. The extra ankle.
coverage helps keep sand from getting in. when I'm at playgrounds or at the beach, and I'm a sucker for not having to deal. with laces. Bessie offers a one-year. warranty on all shoes, 30-day returns. and exchanges, and free shipping on. orders over $110 in North America. And. just because you're a New Rockstars fan, you can get 15% off if you scan the QR. code or use our promo code. Whether I'm. traveling or just spending the day. around town, these are the shoes I. always end up reaching for. They've made. my busy days a whole lot easier. If. you're interested, you can get 15% off. your Vessies at bestie.com/rostars.
With free shipping, covered with 30-day. hassle-free returns, and a one-year. warranty. Black Alley gets a line in. this finale. >> Take every care to preserve the town and. its people. The realm is watching. The. Queen's moral standing must remain. absolute. Sounds boring. >> They learn that Orand has lined the. battlements with children. So Damon's. plan is to send the winter wolves over. the walls. Maybe he's thinking since. these older men are largely. grandfathers, they might be more. discerning about hurting children. We're. going to see how that doesn't really. hold up. We also learn that this guy. standing behind Black Alley to the left. is Sir Gabald. He's Sir Gabald the Gray,
who along with Pate of Longleaf leads. this host with a different tully in the. text. Rea marches into the Grand Sept. with Joffrey and Allen facing the high. septin who stands firm before the altar. with his other highranking septins and. septas. This high septin must know that. he's going to die and does not waver. >> And now after Eegon and his dragon have. been resurrected, there could be no. clearer sign of whom the gods have. chosen to rule. Princess, >> adding princess as an insult there. suggests to me that this High Septton. knows he's going to die as a martyr and.
hopes that his death will inspire a. faith uprising. He says, >> "You may have six dragons, but I have a sevenfaced god.". >> Ah, the battle of 67. Thy septan. threatens Allen that to harm him will. declare war on the starry sept and damn. his soul to the deepest of seven hells. Deepest is an interesting word choice. for Allen who grew up working on ships. and plans to be the future lord of the. tides. Rea tells Alan that he enters to. higher gods referring to the dragon gods. of old Valyria and Allen through his. lineage via Corus is part of that. bloodline. So basically he kills.
Westeros's pope here. Yeah, this is. going to have consequences. When Allan. exits, he gets this look from Our Wild. who did earlier this season propose to. Rea that she could kill the high septin. in this way. Now, Reineer exits the. Sept, having to replace the Easter. Sunday mythology that the Sept was. buzzing about with a religious creed of. her own. She preaches to the crowd that. her father, whom she now calls Vizeris. the peaceful, named her his heir in a. public ceremony observed by hundreds of. lords, making sacred vows of falty. And. that all seems like a valid explanation. to why she should have the throne. But. now, Rara starts going off the rails,
saying her rule was ordained since the. days of the Doom of Valyria, how only. the Targaryen survived. Well, I guess. technically, yeah, but you know, there. were other families and dragon riders. who also survived. And then she said. that the gods summoned her ancestor, Aegon the Conqueror, to unite the. fractured seven kingdoms. And again, unite, a lot of them were at peace with. each other. And now she says that the. gods did this to name Aegon the. Conqueror as the protector of the realm. of men to be the first in a line of. dragon lords who protect mankind from. the threat from the north. This whole.
speech is a major divergence from George. R. Martin's text because think about it. If Reira made any kind of public. proclamation of the song of ice and. fire, surely it would have been recorded. in the Fire and Blood historical record. But House of the Dragon showrunner Ryan. Condle's justification is that Rara. would be seen by the public in this. moment as the Targaryen just ranting and. spouting some [ __ ] that none of these. low folk would understand. And in. particular, Septan Eustace would be. motivated by painting Reineer as insane. in this moment, a heretic who deeply. insulted the faith and not want to give. any ink or justification to what the.
Septans would consider false prophecy. cooked up by Reara as propaganda to. drown out the true religious gospel of. Aegon's return that they were trying to. spread. I just wish there were more. shots during this scene showing the Lo. kind of just scratching their heads and. shrugging off Reira in this moment, saying like, "Maquain, this is a. Wendy's." But they do include this. confused look by torren mander leader. Orwhile that seems to speak to that. general skepticism. Rea declares herself. Reineer the chosen as Mazzaria pushes. through the crowd to stare in judgment. Misaria wears blue, the same pale blue.
that Allison has been wearing throughout. the season. It's stupidly dangerous for. Misaria to stand in a crowd of a couple. hundred people in the daylight where. Rara could see her and immediately order. her soldiers to seize her. Rea ends her. speech WITH. >> YEAH, she got a bit carried away there. because no one in earshot here would. speak or understand Valyrian. Like you. might have some of these low folk go. over to the dragon keepers in the dragon. pit and be like she said something like. and they're going to be like that's not. Valyrian. But Rea goes into the old.
tongue kind of like a politician hoping. that their bilinguality will give them. authority. But in reality everyone just. kind of rolls their eyes. In reality, no. one here would understand what she said. in her closing line, and she just kind. of sounded like she was crazily speaking. in tongues. Also, you'll notice that she. uses the term prince because we learned. in the later seasons of Game of Thrones, the translated prophecy did not. genderize the term prince. So, it really. could mean prince or princess that was. promised. >> That noun has no gender in High. Valyrian. So, the proper translation for. that prophecy would be the prince or.
princess who was promised will bring the. dawn. Despite knowing that he's sending. the Winter Wolves to the Battlemints. lined with Tumbleton kids, Damon says in. his Braveheart inspired pep talk to GIVE. NO MERCY, >> "I DON'T WANT THE BEST OF YOU. I WANT. THE WORST.". >> THE WINTER WOLVES DO THIS ceremonial. stomping and shield bashing to raise. fear in their enemies. But here we get. this heartbreaking shot of Caraxis. screeching as we see these innocent. Tumbleton boys just whimpering and. sobbing and wetting themselves on the. battlement. Actually, the first two boys. we see, I think, are the last ones. standing in front of the gates when. Caraxi starts to breathe fire. Rody the.
Ruin leads the initial charge as a. limited number of Green's arrows thaw. only a small fraction of them. It's a. classic siege battle and it's awesome. because it's a daytime siege. We can. actually see everything clearly. >> Hey, who turned out the lights? >> As the ladders go up, the first few. winter wolves are brought down by rocks. and hot oil. I love this long tracking. shot on Tommy Flanigan as Rody the Ruin. sprinting up to the ladder, climbing up. the ladder. We see a guy falling past. the camera in the shot without cutting. as we are now switching over to a crane. mount, following Tommy Flanigan up the.
ladder and then practically over the. wall where we switch over to a handheld. mount. And the shot ends with Rody. absolutely destroying a dude's face and. then a quick pan back to Tommy Flanigan. as he roars to end the shot on his great. Kota. While earlier Rody promised not to. hurt these kids, now this one kid. lightly taps his leg with a stick and. Rody's like, "H, [ __ ] them kids.". [screaming]. I think it's smart casting here of the. kid because this kid looked like the. oldest of the bunch. Maybe he's like 16. or 17 instead of the clear 11year-olds. who were sitting next to him. The greens.
light up a hidden trench to trap the. invaders in a fiery killbox. Doesn't. this seem familiar to another highbudget. HBO series? Oh yeah, the town of Jackson. in the Last of Us season 2 used a. similar defense when it was besieged by. infected. Throughout this battle, we. intercut between Orand and Damon. Both. sides fighting over being unable to find. Ul. Ulf and Silverwing are a critical. weapon that both sides need that makes. most of the men on this field somewhat. less consequential. Confused as to why. Bermathor has joined this frey instead. of staying at King's Landing like Hugh. was ordered. Damon charges forward on. Caraxis was trying to figure out why.
Caraxis marches through the lined up. river host who now have to rush out of. the way if this was always going to be. the plan. Maybe they thought more of the. scorpions on the battlementss would be. taken out before Caraxis did this. And. maybe Damon just needed to keep Caraxis. at ground level cuz he can't aim those. scorpions downward. They would have no. reason to do that. While the Greens try. to use these boys as human shields in. front of the gates, I was relieved that. if you look very closely, those last two. boys who were there when Caraxis. actually starts to spew flame, when the. camera pans, you can actually see those. two kids fleeing out of harm's way. Coraxis torches the gate and then sticks.
his long neck through the fiery doors. I. like to imagine that Damon had to have. his dragon wind up his neck before. springing it through the doors. The. cavalry led by Black Alley and Sir. Gabald from the south and then by Damon. through the center, followed by Sir Hugh. on foot, all flood into the town. While. all of this is going on, Ol is found. passed out on a latrine and Orman beats. and shames him in the street the same. way Damon did to Ulf in King's Landing. that led to Ulf to betray him. Damon. sees Hugh in the streets looking for. Cat. The fact that Damon sees him here. following his heart, I think might come.
up in a future conversation when they're. all analyzing why things didn't go as. planned with Silverwing and Vermor or. Damon might just see him being here. disobeying orders as a kind of treason. We focus on John Roxton's Valyrian steel. sword, Orphan Maker, as he approaches. Demon. The writer said that since these. two have Valyrian steel swords, they. really wanted to see this duel. I mean, Orund also has a Valyrian steel sword, Vigilance, but I guess they wanted him. to go out from Rody the Ruin making a. penetration joke. Roxton calls Damon a. kinslayer and then a babe killer. The. second of which referring to the murder. of Prince Jaharis in the Blood and.
Cheese incident. I assume that's also. why Roxton calls Damon kinslayer since. that boy would have been his great. nephew. But in truth, while Damon has. killed highborn people like Ray of Royce. and Vaymond Valarion in cold blood, he. has yet to kill anyone of his own blood. Ulf mounts silver wing and as we see the. river host cheer, Olf turns Silverwing. back toward them and torches hundreds of. them in one breath. Immediately, we see. how less relevant all of the individual. struggles of single soldiers in this. siege has been. Roxton rocks Damon and. starts to smush out Damon's eye while. Rody catches up to Orand and gets in a. few hits before Orand uses his Valyrian.
steel sword of vigilance to slice off. Rody's arm. But the blood from this gets. on Orman's face, triggering his gag. reflex so Rody can stab him up the butt. [screaming and groaning]. >> That's a robber [ __ ]. by the N. >> Look, I'm choosing to believe that Rodri. Dustin knew nothing about Orman High. Tower when he made this joke. They look. up to see Silverwing turning towards. them. And I'm not sure if Oliver State. this far away could see Orman on the. battlements mints when he began to make. that dive or if he just wanted to wipe. out the whole town of Dumbledin here.
But either way, he says, "Fuck you, too." It's a contrast to the opening. episode of this season when Reo was on. the back of the uncontrollable dragon. sheep stealer begging it to stop while. Olley orders his dragon to torch rows. and rows of houses full of innocent. people just because one man here. insulted him. So this was one treason of. Tumbleton, but the episode is titled. Treasons of Tumbleton. Who was the. second treason? In the text, Hugh. Hammer's betrayal is just as selfish as. Ols is. But here in the episode, he was. really following his heart. I think the. second treason is a treason of all of.
these men committing against the gods. and against the realm for harming. children and other innocents. It was a. betrayal to all of society and a. betrayal that they will all pay dearly. for. The crew underlines it here, giving. us this saving private Ryan, madness of. war sequence, focusing on the tragic. aftermath, the civilians holding their. dead children, burn victims, victims. having lost limbs limping away in shock, a riderless horse. War is no longer. glorified here. There's a somewhat. confusing shot of the three dragons. fleeing the scene. This is actually. Silver Wing with Ulf riding it being. chased by Caraxis blowing fire at Silver.
Wing while Vermathor follows both of. them. None of these are Tisarion and. Darren. This episode actually gives us. no indication of where Tarion and Darren. went after we last saw them in the. Tumbleton Sept. Gwain rolls over in the. ash looking for Darren. Roxton finds. Orman's burned body and Hugh screams. when he finds Cat dead. [screaming]. Out in the field with the Tully ranks, I. appreciate the focus on this one Tully. soldier who just holds his face and rubs. the ashy dirt beside him in shock. Helena finishes her embroidery and steps. toward the window, but we never see her. jump. There was that promo shot that we.
focused on a lot throughout these. breakdowns, showing Helena from above. that was never featured this season. I. now think it was part of Helena's dream. sequence in episode 7, and they just use. different shots ultimately. As Allison. makes her way back south, she arrives to. a bush filled with these blue. butterflies. I think these would be the. Yrium of Nth, having finally emerged. from their cocoons, of course, marking. the death of her daughter. While talking. about her expression in the scene, Olivia Cook said that Allison right now. instinctively knows in her gut that. something horrible has happened. And we. cut from that to Helena's corpse on the. spikes at the base of her tower. This is.
heartbreaking for all of us who have. written at dawn for our bug girl. But it. is Helena's fate in a text. However, when Helena jumps in the book, she isn't. pregnant with Mor. She's already had. Mor. But Mor does die. A pretty horrible. fate. And George R. Martin recently. confirmed that it was the news of that. fate that caused Helena to decide to. jump. There were actually previous. interpretations that Rara might have. pushed Helena, but that's not what. happened here. So either way, Helena and. Mor weren't going to survive, but I. always thought if the show could alter. the fate of Lighor, I was hoping they. could have done the same for Helena. Nope, not going to happen. The final.
scene shows Reine looking like she's. alone in the castle in her full battle. armor, looking out the window toward the. Sept, the last view Helena had seen. before she jumped. Rara only now stops. to look at the embroidery where Helena. had elaborately stitched exactly what. she planned to do. We see Helena falling. wearing green. Not blue like she's been. wearing all season, but high tower green. to better contrast the blue tears that. formed a waterfall in the wake of her. fall. Rea is shaken to realize that this. wasn't any kind of rushed note of. intent, but something that Helena had. spent days and days stitching over the.
past few weeks. Rea slides the. embroidery back to see a depiction of. herself bleeding on the iron throne. Behind the throne, interestingly, we see. a green dragon roaring. Could this be. Vagar? as well as several human hands. reaching out on either side of the nest. of swords. Three black hands, a fiery. orange hand on the right, a white hand. with two black fingers, and a green. dragon claw even reaching out from the. flame. But Reer doesn't look scared by. this. She actually looks satisfied, even. a bit smitten, just to see herself on. the throne, regardless of what physical.
impact it has on her body. The audio mix. here has a female voice echoing. >> [music]. >> It's kind of like it's both Helena's. dream and even Denise's dream warning. Rainara that she is completely. misunderstanding the song of ice and. fire that she thinks she's so confident. in. There's definitely a parallel in the. way Rainara looks out at this sept and. the way Cersei looks out at the sept of. Bor in the Game of Thrones season 6. finale as both armored queens are facing. their enemies specifically in the faith. of the seven. In our final shot of the.
season, Reineer shuts the window. Remember, Rara began the season on. Dragonstone. Full of hope for being able. to win the throne with minimal. bloodshed. She end the season in full. fascist mode, embracing Damon's. wararmongering. But this wasn't just a. virtue that she learned from Damon. This. is also a lesson that she learned from. Allison. Back in episode 3, Rea asked. Allison how she could bear ruling. And. Allison said, >> "You may not rule and remain yourself. There are choices to be made and you may.
on occasion have to turn your face away. while people suffer and die. There is in. you a door that must shut. >> And what do we see Rea doing now? Rea. shuts the door inside of herself to the. pain that she has caused and the pain. that she will soon inflict. Now the. behind the scenes featurette showed us. Helena's complete tapestry which seems. to have started with the blood and. cheese incident, Jiharis's murder, a. bloodied woman who seems to have her. torso severed from the middle. Hm. A. blue boar with wings. Then several. beetles, flies, and centipedes all over. it. And then someone on the iron throne.
with fire bursting out of their chest. And to the left of it, a sword going. into a blue eye. Then a weirwood tree. with an owl in it. The owl would be the. sigil of House Merin of the Stormlands. Then this goat figure, who I assume is. just a green man rearing up at the tree. Then a noose hanging from that weirwood. tree. Then a nude woman standing in. flame. I think this is a Daenerys Easter. egg because Daenerys was part of the. vision that Damon saw at the end of. season 2 that Helena was a part of. She's seeing her full future and how. there is a shared madness among all. generations of Targaryenss. We can also.
in this featureette see the part of the. embroidery that Helena was working on. back in episode 7. I'm pretty sure it's. the last part that she did before. jumping. It's where the ring is showing. the death of Vermax and Jace over the. waring triarchy ship and Valarion ship. in the Battle of the Gullet. And to the. right of these is a blue horse with a. gold leg and a silver leg. Graphic. artist Alicia Grace Martin created this. embroidery by hand and explained how she. deliberately left various threads undone. to show Helena rushing to finish this. and kind of losing her grip on reality. And Via Sabon had a really great. explanation of Helena's intent. throughout all of this.
>> It really feels like Helena's like. almost overworking herself doing this. cuz maybe it is her therapy in that. sense. And there's also quite a nice. poetry to the idea that it's an. externalization of when she's [music]. done then that's the end. So, she's. working towards this sort of like meta. finishing point. >> To decode more of it would be to spoil. next season. So, off we go into the. final spoiler dungeon. Stop watching if. you don't want to know anything about. the future of these characters from the. text. Okay, before we get into this. embroidery, I'm pretty sure what we saw. in this episode was just the first.
battle of Tumbleton. The fact that we. haven't seen Darren the Daring ride to. Sarion yet and become the victor of that. battle and specifically haven't seen the. exact fate of Adam on Sea Smoke for it, I think leads me to believe that season. 4 is going to begin with like the second. battle of Tumbleton that they might. merge with other events. But certain. characters need to die for this to be. the complete story of Tumbleton. But. talking about this embroidery, the. graphic artist said many of these. embroidery images are meant to be. abstract. And I think most of the. animals we see, including the owl, the. boar, the horse, the insects, are meant. to be abstract, but the people are. specific. And I think the person on the.
throne with the flame shooting out of. the chest. I have to assume this is. Helena's brother Aegon who burned at the. battle of Rook's Rest. Or it could be. her foreseeing his death by poisoned. wine after he gets restored to the Iron. Throne. The bloodied woman cut in half. At first I was like, could this be. Raineer after she goes to Dragonstone. and Sunfire eats half of her? Or could. it be Helena herself surrounded by bugs. with her heart broken by the rat with a. knife? I don't think it's either of. them. I actually think it's a fate that. Helena foresees for her daughter, Princess Jiara, at Bitterbridge being. torn apart by the mob. And that vision.
is why she jumped because I don't think. this tapestry ultimately shows doubles. of any characters. And we already see. figures that are clearly Raineira and. Helena and other parts of it. So, this. must be someone else. And there would be. a certain symmetry with Jiharis on one. side and a slightly older Jihara would. be right beside him. So, I think that. blue boar could be connected to the. hooded centaur of House Caswell of. Bitterbridge. And the arrow in the. figure could be from that centaur's. archer bow. The blue eye being. punctured, I think this has got to be. foreshadowing Damon versus Aean above. the god's eye lake when Damon will stab.
Aean through his last good eye. And I. think when we see John Roxton in this. episode going for Damon's eye, kind of. planted that idea in Damon's head. So, in total, this tapestry shows blood and. cheese and murder Jiharis. Jiara. bloodily torn apart at Bitterbridge. The. stabbing of Aean one eye through his. other eye over the god's eye lake. Aegon. the second dying of poison later on. after being restored as king. A weirwood. tree with a noose. Maybe the way Alice. Rivers will end things for herself after. Aeund dies in the lake. Daenerys in the. distant future. And then Harrenhal and. Aean dead in the pool of blood as Alice.
Rivers finds him dead as we saw in the. past episode. And then the battle of the. Gullet and Jason Vermax's deaths and. then Rara bleeding on the iron throne. The throne is rejecting her as we saw. this season and she will die when Aegon. and Sunfire get her on Dragonstone and. then the Red Keep and Helena leaping to. her death and that's where it ends for. her. Lastly, Ryan Condola said, quote, "Season 4 is going to be even bigger. We. have new characters and new dragons and. new locations all to come that I think. are going to make it a very worthy final. season. First off, new locations. The. first three seasons of the show have. covered a lot of ground. I don't know.
where else we could go based off of the. events of Fire and Blood other than the. aisle of faces. I think they are going. to finally show us that grove of. weirwood trees and then new dragons. Does that mean we're going to get. Cannibal and Grey Ghost in season 4? Or. if Raina's Nettle's cosplay arc is over, will she finally get that hatchling of. the pink dragon of mourning?
