HOUSE OF THE DRAGON S3E05 BREAKDOWN: Every Detail You Missed!
Another feast on House of the Dragon. that I don't want an invite to. Barf. I'm Eric Voss of the New Rockstars. channel and this is a breakdown of House. of the Dragon season 3 episode 5. Let's. go through this episode with a. scene-by-scene analysis and explanation. of everything that's going on, details. that you missed, and as always for any. potential spoilers for future plot. events from the book Fire and Blood, I'm. going to save that for the spoiler. dungeon at the end of this video. One of. the best ways you can support what we're. doing here at New Rockstars is to grab. one of these house crest designs. available exclusively at our merch store.
redbubble.shop. If you have any shirt. that we have from our merch store, take. a selfie of yourself wearing it, post. it, tag us, and we'll shout you out on. the video. Just like our man Blake. Grass. All right, the opening tapestry. animation has been updated. For one, you'll see Jefferson Hall's name back. among the opening credits, and since one. of the Lannister twins that he played. was already beheaded, it's an early clue. that somehow Tywin Lannister survived. And then back to the shot of Rhaenyra. triumphant, we're back to seeing Corlys. Velaryon back to the right of Daemon, but in the spot that previously. contained Alicent and Helaena, now it's.
just an empty space like a Looney Tunes. character that just went pew. Instead, we see Alicent and Helaena sneaking off. somewhere else as they try to escape the. Red Keep at the end of this episode. Then these two mystery figures, a. bearded man and a dark-haired, white-robed figure, each under a blanket. or at a table that now tears apart. I. was thinking, could this be Darren and. Ormond? I actually think it's going to. be something that we see next episode. because last episode there was something. weird and random that did not apply to. anything that happened in the last. episode that now makes sense that we see. in this episode. I think these opening. tapestry animations might be like a week.
behind or they're just trying to set us. up for something we'll see next week. We. begin this episode in the Riverlands as. the host of Lord Oscar Tully and Winter. Wolf Roderick Dustin Roddy the Ruin make. camp before a bridge that has been. dismantled preventing their crossing on. their march to Tumbleton. Oscar Tully. tells Lord Piper to take riders up to. the Stony Sept and secure the barge. that's there. This guy is Lord Peter. Piper of House Piper of the Riverlands. that has always sworn fealty to. Rhaenyra. The Stony Sept would be west. of where they are near the headwaters of. the Blackwater Rush, which this river. must be connected to. So, I'm guessing.
the plan is to float that barge down. this river and then use that barge to. cross it. Now, Roderick here is. sharpening his headsman's axe, itching. to use it again after he beheaded Jason. Lannister, and he says he's sick of. Criston Cole slowing them down, and he. wants to unleash his wolves to hunt him. down. While Lord Oscar suggests to just. play at Criston's game. After all, Oscar. is really on his home Riverland turf, and he knows these waterways and muddy. marshes better than the Greens do. But, before Lord Petyr Baelish can get that. barge, he pays the piper as Criston. knifes him. Criston and Gwyn small band. of Greens have infiltrated this camp,
burning it, and they indicate that they. were eavesdropping on that Stony Sept. plan, and they plan to get even further. ahead of Oscar on that. Criston, Gwyn, and their men now wear a kind of facial. camouflage that at first seemed like it. was three green lines down their face. I. was wondering if it could be kind of a. middle finger to Rhaenyra in the form of. the three lines of the House Strong. sigil, a sigil that everyone here in the. Riverlands would recognize and get the. insult behind it. But, in the daylight, it looks like there's just four lines. So, I guess it's just kind of a lame. camouflage. Meanwhile, rain soaks the. ruined castle of Harrenhal as this goat.
walks about. This black goat is, of. course, always a form that Alys Rivers. takes. Three assassins seeking. Rhaenyra's bounty on Aemond arrive, dripping wet from the rain, but notice. how Alys magically appears from around a. corner and looks very much unwet, untouched by the rain. Alys says there's. no Aemond One-Eye here, but there is a. blind in both eyes butter turner and a. boy who feeds the horses. Also, >> and then there are the ghosts. >> Yeah, literally one of the five towers. of Harrenhal is called the Tower of. Ghosts. She schools these boys on not. knowing the history of Harrenhal and its.
ordered construction by Harren the. Cruel, as she calls him. This is really. the first time we've heard Harren the. Black of House Hoare called this. moniker, suggesting Alys is speaking for. the builders who truly did suffer over. its 40-year-long construction. Thousands. of captives did die in the quarries, chained to their sledges, and weirwood. trees that had stood 3,000 years were. cut down to form the rafters and beams, and the bed that the guests of this. place sleep in. Something tells me that. those weirwood trees are what Alice and. her green man buddy are most upset. about, as that would be a huge insult to.
the old gods that seem to give them. their power. Alice anthropomorphizes the. castle, saying she breathes, swallows. the greedy and the heedless, and she's. always hungry. And then she tosses one. of these blood-watered stones she's. talking about over her shoulder, and. bats. I'm guessing these are the same. bats that swarmed out of the tower when. Vhagar first flew over the castle in. season episode two. We hear screams and. laughter in Aemond's nightmare.
Aemond tells Alice his dream was his. brother Aegon, his face on fire, laughing as he dragged him down into the. dark. And yeah, we did actually hear Tom. Glynn Carney's voice in the audio there, doing something Aegon hasn't really been. able to do this season, laugh with glee. The screaming was the sound that he made. over the battle of Rook's Rest in season. two, when his face was melted. But Alice. says it was just the dream again, telling us that this has been a. recurring dream, potentially a dream. that she wants Aemond to have, like the. spooky dream she seemed to haunt Daemon. with in this same castle, in this same. bed in season two. But for now, Aemond.
says. >> She saw it. She said I would die, that I've ruined. everything. >> He's referring to his conversation with. the sister Helaena back in season two, episode eight. >> Aegon will be king again. And you, you'll be dead. You were. swallowed up in the God's Eye, and you. were never seen again. >> In a way, this is already coming true. Aemond is certainly being metaphorically. swallowed up in this thirsty castle. beside the God's Eye lake, unfindable by. anyone seeking him, while his brother. Aegon, who actually never stopped being.
king, is back on the rise. But there's. more things to say here that I'll get. into in the spoiler dungeon. Alice hums. a lullaby to calm Aemond, and he says, "Mother." Yes, as I suspected, Aemond. kissing his mother Alicent was all to. set up Alice seducing him with his mommy. issues. I mean, their names, Alice, Alicent, are even similar. And Aegon. reminds us on this episode that the. second son Aemond was always the one. doted upon by Alicent over his facial. scarring. Doting that Aegon, whose face. was scarred at an older age, likely. feels that he never received equally. Alice's humming continues to echo over.
the Red Keep as Orwyle hurries down the. steps with another brew of moon tea. Elinda notices as she turns past him. while she was delivering her own tea. Since Elinda is Mysaria's spy and since. she's seen the moon tea before when it. was pregnant Rhaenyra, this is how. Mysaria figures all of this out later. And it may just be a transition, but I. do have to wonder if Alice's lullaby. humming over the shots of this moon tea. being brought over is meant to be seen. as some kind of connection to this. herbal remedy coming from the same kind. of woods witch magic that she operates.
in. Or since it's being brought for. Helaena, the dragon dreamer prophet who. Aemond was just talking about with. Alice, Alice might just have some divine. insight into what's happening with. Helaena. I was going to say that this. lullaby kind of sounds like Jenny of. Oldstones, but no, that song would not. have been composed yet because it's. about events that haven't happened yet. in history. But they are events that I. have wondered that Alice Rivers might. have been connected to. Like it's. possible that she just had the melody in. her head and words were not put to that. melody until sometime later. And yes, you'll notice Orwyle passed a couple. cats. The Red Keep jelly ball has begun.
After Alan suggested it to Rhaenyra in. episode 4, the fire and blood detail of. Otto Hightower ordering 100 cats into. the Red Keep to replace the hung rat. catchers is now finally happening. These. are the cats that will overtake King's. Landing in the Game of Thrones era. including Tommen's cat of Ser Pounce. Orwyle tells the door guard that the. potion is for menstrual cramping, something that both of these guards are. now probably feeling anxiety over. knowing nothing about since they are. serving a queen as opposed to a king. Orwyle sets aside the smaller container. and then hidden in his robes underneath. the maester chains, the larger pot of.
plan tea. Reminder that Alicent used. this moon tea in season 2 episode 4. after getting pregnant from Criston. Cole. Some theories continue that Daeron. might have been Criston's son in in. show's continuity. Though again, that. would make his bonding with Viserys. unless likely according to the show's. logic. Either way, it gives Orwyle this. interesting amount of influence in the. HBO series to be the maester involved in. ending these pregnancies for Rhaenyra, Alicent, and potentially Helaena while. prolonging the lives of Viserys and. Aegon. Notice how Helaena's on the floor. setting out food here? I think she might. be laying out some treats for the cats.
that are now in the Red Keep, which. certainly pays off later when this cat. comes in this room and snoops and finds. that hidden passageway. But, Helaena. does not want the moon tea, but Alicent. is worried to point out that if the baby. is male, it will be Aegon's heir. Aegon, who is still alive, making that. potential child a true rival to. Rhaenyra's heir of Joffrey and ruin the. delicate temporary peace Alicent has. worked out with Rhaenyra. And speaking. of her brother Aemond, Helaena says, >> He burns. But, without fire. >> I like how her mama Alicent just has to. react like, "Okay, my bug girl saying some bug girl.
[ __ ] again." So, to a dragon dreamer. like Helaena, to burn without fire must. mean to suffer from confusing and. terrifying dreams that plague your mind. In the full Targaryen lineage, there are. ultimately two negative fiery fates that. they're famous for: to literally burn. from dragonfire from their own dragons. or a rival in their family or from their. minds burning as they go insane. Insane. from absolute power, from paranoia, from. dreams that they can't make sense of. That mental burning seems to have. afflicted Aemond and Daemon and a bit of.
Rhaenyra and in the future certainly the. Mad King and his daughter Daenerys. Alicent points out that this child, whatever it is, will be used as a ward. hostage to keep Aemond from attacking. King's Landing. I guess you could read. this as Alicent entertaining the. possibility that this child's father is. Aemond, but I don't know. I think. there's just been some timeline. confusion from season 2 to now. In. truth, it's only been just a few months. since season 2 episode 4 when Aegon was. injured at Rook's Rest. It's totally. possible for him to have conceived. another child with Helaena before that. happened for her to just start showing.
now. And yes, I have to say that it's. still very weird and very gross to me. that we are doing all the speculation. for people who are siblings. I know it's. just a reality of this world, but it's. still just crazy to me how the writers. have just kind of had to normalize it. and they expect us to normalize it. Alicent describes the moon tea as a. blessing from the Citadel. That's some. Hightower thinking right there. A gift. from the Seven headquartered in Oldtown. whose starry sept overlooks the Citadel. full of these scientific maesters. For. the Targaryens, their blessings come. from dragons and from dreams, but for. the Hightowers, their blessings come.
from the Seven and from these herbal. remedies of the plants of Westeros that. allow them to contain and restrain their. vices. Lady Sabitha Frey returns from. season 2 episode 5. Remember when Jace. visited her at the Twins and scored the. deal with the Freys to let the Winter. Wolves cross in exchange for Harrenhal. should Rhaenyra retake the throne. Rhaenyra's hasty offer of Harrenhal as a. bounty for anyone who could kill Aemond. naturally would upset the Freys. And I'm. glad the show didn't just forget about. this. Sabitha Frey is described in Fire. & Blood as a quote sharp-featured,
sharp-tongued hereden of House Vyprine. who would sooner ride than dance, wore. mail instead of silk, and was fond of. killing men and kissing women. She. actually shares a tent with Black Aly in. events that the show hasn't gotten to. yet. The HBO series seems to be moving. in a different direction with Lady Frey. She's now going to be a member of. Rhaenyra's small council, but I do think. Lady Frey on the show is another example. like Lady Sharra Arryn of House of these. proud noble women of the realm feeling. emboldened by Rhaenyra's ascent and. positioned to manage the realm on a. regional level. Adam and Baela report a.
Vegar sighting on the outskirts of. Windisch Town. Windisch Town is in the. Riverlands on the western side of the. continent, actually closer to the area. often threatened by the Iron Islands. Torrhen Manderly whispers to Lady Frey. throughout this meeting to catch her up. on who everyone is. It's kind of like in. grade school where last year's new kid. is kind of grateful to have another new. kid so he doesn't feel like the new kid. anymore. Actually, these two seem to be. the nobles who were added to the opening. titles tapestry back in episode 4, the. one that I was having trouble to. identify, which makes it very weird that. they were included in the tapestry for. episode 4 and not in this episode 5 when.
this is the episode that pairs the two. up like this. Anyway, coming from White. Harbor in the north, Torrhen Manderly. would be a geographic neighbor to Lady. Frey from the Twins. So, it makes sense. that they'd couple up like this. But, just to round up this weird small. council as it is on the HBO series, Alan. of Hull is acting Hand of the Queen, filling in for his father Corlys. Daemon. is kind of in this nebulous position of. as a king consort. Mysaria is the. Mistress of Whispers. Orwyle is the. Grand Maester. Torrhen Manderly is the. Master of Coin. Adrian Redfort is, I'm. assuming, the new Lord Commander of the.
Queen's Guard, which would make Sabitha. Frey maybe the Mistress of Laws or the. Mistress of Ships. I'm assuming Mistress. of Laws because she does kind of seem to. be, you know, a rule follower. Or maybe. she's just kind of just sitting in. Remember, Rhaenyra did away with the. whole attendance balls. So, I don't. think she really cares on people having. specific titles in her cabinet. Daemon. notes this gossiping that this. whispering has turned into when Torrhen. describes Mysaria. "Why was she called?". "But, they're fugitives. We will root. them out soon enough." "No.". "Mhm.".
Daemon and Mysaria bicker over skirmish. at the city's Dragon Gate. Daemon saying. that Mysaria handing out food isn't. really working. Mysaria saying that the. Gold Cloaks prosecuting the petty crimes. amounts to overkill. Overall, Rhaenyra. is singularly focused on Vhagar, Daemon. on Gold Cloak security, and Mysaria on. smallfolk welfare and spying. Addam says. Baela and Moondancer are tired, so. Rhaenyra orders Daemon and Caraxes to go. to the Riverlands instead. But, Daemon. says, "No, not yet." He storms out. wanting to instead investigate these. Gold Cloaks attacks personally rather. than leave it to Ser Luthor Largent to. handle it. Since Gold Cloaks are.
historically Daemon's good old boys, the. local force that any ruler of King's. Landing needs in order to maintain power. in the city, Daemon just feels. particularly loyal to them. Erryk and. Arryk report that Joffrey and Tyraxes. have returned from the Vale, but. Rhaenyra doesn't meet with him. Only. later does she make time after he fell. asleep trying to stay up to talk to her. So, what gives? Why does she want to. talk to her brown-haired boy? I was. wondering if Joffrey reminds Rhaenyra. too much of Jace and Luke, and she just. doesn't want that vulnerable pain to. derail her when she just needs to keep. her focus on other things right now. Or. maybe the whole matter of the strong.
bastard's rumor is just making her want. to have some distance from Joffrey. But. I do think that distance from Joffrey is. going to have a consequence in future. episodes. Mysaria confronts Alicent. about the moon tea and after initially. claiming it's for Helaena's headaches, she just admits to having taken a lover. after Viserys, one that Rhaenyra knows. about, she says, and says that the moon. tea is for her and she chugs it down, which means she's going to feel all. those awful side effects later, which is. putting that damn cloth against her. stomach. But Mysaria asks if the lover. was a lord or a commoner or perhaps. both, indicating that she already knows. that it was Criston Cole who began as a.
commoner and then was made lord as. Aegon's lord hand. Gwyn tells Criston. about the game he and his cousin Ormund. used to play as kids in Oldtown to run. the Hightower starting at dawn to try to. make it to the top to see the light from. the beacon from sunrise. Remember when. Sam in Game of Thrones went to Oldtown, we actually got to see the geography of. Oldtown and how it has this big. lighthouse in its harbor. That's what. they're talking about. And Gwyn says. that he would always let his annoying. cousin Ormund to win. Actually, we later. see how competitive Ormund is when it. comes to these leisure games and as they.
march the green soldiers cover the. perimeter, but we see a spider web as. they are marching right into a trap for. the green's poor horses. Gwyn offers for. Criston to live in Oldtown, but really. it's kind of just a job offer to serve. House Hightower as a knight, not a lord. This whole honor of serving as a knight. versus the honor of ruling as a lord is. just an interesting parallel with the. conflict brewing on both sides, particularly Rhaenyra's dragon seeds who. don't want to be knights, they want to. be lords. Criston doesn't really get. into it here, but he's really tired of. these Hightowers and these Targaryens. telling him, "Hey, wouldn't it be great.
if you like worked for us?" Yeah, and it. seems like Oscar Tully's "We can play at. this game, too" was to just realize the. greens would just make for the stony. sept that if they were there burning. their camp, they were probably listening. to what their plans were and they took a. shortcut ahead to mark the path with. crow's feet to disable the horses. Alicent notices this chambermaid eyeing. her and then takes off her necklace, forming her plan to bribe this maid in. order to get her outfit to try to escape. later. Sir Luthor Largent tells Damon. that most of his men were still swaddled. babies when Damon last captained the. Gold Cloaks, meaning Sir Luthor was. probably like a teenager when he served.
Damon. And as a teenager, he probably. did think it was awesome when the Rogue. Prince would punish petty crimes cruelly. and aggressively. But before Luthor and. Damon find two more Gold Cloaks having. been disemboweled with cut throats, we. see this girl spying on them. We'll see. this girl running back later to these. dudes burning messages from carrier. pigeons. And we see all heterochromia. again. Yes, actor Richard Peffer was one. of the green soldiers on the battlements. of the Red Keep with Sir Frederick back. in episode two. When I noticed this. interesting close-up when Sir Frederick.
ordered to stand down from the scorpions. and let Rhaenyra land there. Now we know. why we got that close-up of this guy. with the differently colored eyes. It. looks like instead this green soldier. laid low in Flea Bottom and is working. as an assassin and an operative for. Ormund Hightower. He's likely the one. who painted the Queen of Bastards. graffiti. So much for my or while Banksy. theory. But this dude must be literate. if he's communicating via messages from. pigeons like this. Now it is yet another. example of heterochromia with Game of. Thrones characters after Baelor. Targaryen in A Knight of the Seven. Kingdoms also had heterochromia. But. that was really an eye contact worn by.
Bertie Carvel to match actor Oscar. Morgan who played Baelor's son Valarr. who naturally has heterochromia. Either. way it's a choice that these producers. of these HBO shows seem to be doubling. down on for whatever reason. I'm. guessing the choice with Richard Peffer. was to make him visually memorable so. that we remember him from episode two. Or who knows, maybe there's going to be. some bloodline connection between this. green soldier and Mariah Martell, the. mother of Prince Baelor who passed down. her Dornish features to him. Or maybe. the writers are just trying to make this. guy memorable to give him a similar arc. to the character of Sir Perkin the Flea.
who in Fire and Blood was a hedge knight. in Flea Bottom who causes a lot of. problems for Rhaenyra. But Perkin in the. book is kind of a nutcase on his own. quest whereas this guy is clearly fully. an agent of the Greens. And kind of like. an Ed Gein serial killer. He uses. pigeons not ravens as Rhaenyra and. Mysaria are currently monitoring all. incoming and outgoing raven traffic in. the city. And ravens can fly long. distances. You only need a pigeon if. your message is going the distance from. King's Landing to Tumbleton, where we. see this pigeon go to Ormund Hightower. The message reads, "Gold blood spilled,
three marked in the tally. The account. lies open." I'm assuming the account. refers to an account that Ormund would. deposit these Darian coins in. Ormund. orders John Braxton to secure the. battlements from felling every tree from. here to Bitterbridge. Even mentioning. Bitterbridge here has me worried about. events to come. More on that in the. spoiler dungeon. But Darian tells Ormund. that he's been working with the maester. on learning the family history on the. Hightower side. Ormund objects to it. being called dry, even though it is far. less interesting than the Fire and Blood. family history on the Targaryen side. It. reminds me a lot of the Elder of.
Shelbyville in The Simpsons trying to. impress the kids on that side of town. that the lemon tree was actually haunted. and that turnip juice is actually. refreshing. Though in that example, it's. the Shelbyvillians who want to marry. their cousins. It sounds like the only. real claims to fame of House Hightower. are settling a dispute among the. Greyjoys, the Peaks, the Osgreys, and. Gardners, houses among the Iron Islands. in the Reach. Wow, what a cool career. day flex, Ormund. So instead, Ormund. just kind of claims the tales of another. family that his ancestors briefly were. aligned with, the Martells, referencing.
Myria Martell, the Yellow Toad of Dorne. >> A blind princess. Hideous, hairless, thick of waist. >> Yes, Myria Martell of Dorne was the. ruler of Dorne who resisted Aegon's. conquest and called the conqueror. usurper, which is really the origin of. the Martell house words of unbowed, unbent, and unbroken. He explains that. Myria never submitted, but actually. poisoned her wells and hid in the. mountains so that when the Targaryens. arrived and took their halls, they snuck. in at night and slaughtered the. Targaryens in their beds. You can see. how he admires that cunning hardship as. he plans to do something similar with.
Darian to overthrow the dragon lords. They're playing this game of cyvasse, which is a chess-like board game. originating from Volantis. It's played. between two players with 10 types of. pieces, each with different powers and. attributes, the goal being to take your. opponent's king. And as Ormund brags. about their Dornish allies remaining. unbroken to this day, counting the new. gold coins he minted with Doran's face, Doran moves his dragon figure across the. board to put Ormund in checkmate. This. full scene, he was telling this boy he. needed to be schooled that Targaryens. are only strong, not smart, only to see.
Doran's Targaryen side inspire this kid. with the vision and the ambition to go. for the kill in this match. With one. move, he proves his cousin uncle Ormund. an idiot. And undercuts Ormund's whole. point about intellectual superiority. And Doran can once again concede when. Ormund is about to crash out over not. getting his way. And he says that he was. just lucky. And yes, Ormund clears the. board, kind of like I do when I lose at. Settlers of Catan. STOP ROLLING SEVENS, IT'S [ __ ] BUT HE PIVOTS. >> Never apologize for victory. >> Ormund recognizes that only Targaryens. are ones who lose their temper like.
that. So he's trying to calm himself and. look more civilized. The coins Ormund. minted of Doran are getting way ahead of. the game. Realistically, there would. still be coins of Viserys probably still. in circulation. And many on the greens. faction are claiming Aegon is still. alive. And technically, Aemond would be. the next in line. But Ormund calls Doran. >> son of Viserys, beacon shining from the. Hightower. >> Ah, this line gives us context to Gwyn. letting Ormund win in those run the. tower games for Ormund growing up. I. guess they gave him a false sense of. confidence and unearned superiority when.
really his cousin was just letting him. win. Ormund says Doran is that shining. beacon from the lowliest of the faithful. to Boros Baratheon himself. Why bring up. Boros here? I guess he's noting the. highest lord who still swears fealty to. the greens. Thanks to Zocdoc for. sponsoring today's video. >> Meanwhile, Helaena tells Jaehaera to not. touch the leaves that the caterpillar. crawls on because. >> Eat the leaves of the nightshade, but. that would be death for you or me. It's. a puzzle. >> Huh. So, nightshade is a poisonous plant. in A Song of Ice and Fire lore. Grand. Maester Pycelle accuses Tyrion of. stealing nightshade in order to frame. Tyrion for Joffrey's poisoning in A. Storm of Swords. Essence of nightshade. can be used to put you to sleep, but. this shows how Helaena is not only a bug. girl, she's also a horticulturist. And. of course, we are reminded of her seeing. that out of season caterpillar and the.
butterfly of Naath. I assume this is the. same caterpillar, but what does Helaena. mean by it's a puzzle? Well, it seems. like she wants her daughter, Jaehaera, to learn her interests, making me think. that Jaehaera might be a dreamer as. well. Is she telling her daughter that. all of life, all of the future, all of. their visions are really a puzzle that. they have to assemble the pieces of from. signs and portents around them in order. to make sense of the future? More on. this in the spoiler dungeon. Alicent. says that they can escape through a. hidden chamber in her bedchamber, the. one that does Helaena points out, Blood. and Cheese used to kill Jaehaerys. The.
fact that Alicent trusts that route and. doesn't assume Rhaenyra would have. guarded it or sealed it off suggests. that she truly believes Rhaenyra had. nothing to do with Blood and Cheese and. wouldn't have known that that passage. existed. Meanwhile, Baela wonders if. Vhagar and Aemond might be hiding in the. Westerlands, hiding in the caves near. Casterly Rock. Baela is restless, worried that she's undervalued by the. crown and will eventually be married off. to some lord in Pike with gold to pay. off Rhaenyra's debts. I mean, that. wouldn't be a bad plan for Rhaenyra. The. Greyjoys in Pike would, through their. plundering, likely be flushed with cash. considering the Triarchy is in rough. shape and is now fighting amongst.
themselves. Aemond awakens in that same. weirwood bed that Daemon would sleep in. in season 2 when he suffered similar. nightmares. And now, Aemond is dreaming. of Vhagar's eye opening. Aemond recalls. how Aegon tortured him when they were. children, recalling season 1 when the. older brother would team up with Jace. and Luke and tried to burn the. dragonless Aemond with the pink dread. On going, Alicent says "Mother sometimes. love most the son that grieves them.". And she calls herself someone who's been. grieved, positioning herself as this. motherly figure to her. But also, Alicent is super old. Has she borne.
children before? So many questions about. Alicent Rivers and Gayle Rankin's. performance of her is part of the reason. why she seems to be surrounded by this. interesting cloud of mystery. While. Aemond feels like he was the less loved. brother, his brother Aegon feels the. same way, lamenting the same thing to. Larys that Aemond was the champion with. the sword and attorneys and fluent in. Valyrian. And then, Alicent loved Aemond and his. scabby little eye even more than him. But while Alicent Rivers doted on. Aemond, Larys kind of plays the stern.
father giving his son figure some tough. love. >> You're a terrible king. But worse than. that, you are a terrible man. >> It's actually great advice. It's exactly. what Aegon needs to hear. Rhaenyra prays. at the same candle-covered altar in the. Great Sept by the Mother statue where. she met Alicent in season 2 and another. Septa in. So, Daemon switches to High Valyrian to. discuss the mystery threat that's been. murdering the Gold Cloaks, a threat that. Rhaenyra recognizes is within. These. other septons definitely side eye these. Targaryens for even speaking Valyrian in.
this Westerosi house of worship. Rhaenyra says, For Rhaenyra, the paranoia and madness. that she's starting to feel as ruler. feels cold to her. An interesting. temperature description considering. she's currently being warmed by dozens. of candles in front of her, but I think. it is the song of ice and fire that. she's actually dreading. Larys is. spotted in the Rook's Rest camp by this. man. This is the same dude who joined.
the other guy demanding coin for Aegon. touching Sunfyre back in episode 4. So. now Larys knows that Jacaerys is going. to learn that these two first came up. upon the Rook's Rest area pretending to. be septons with one of them weirdly. obsessed with Sunfyre. Aegon finally. gives up on his quest and he lets Larys. hire a Braavosi ship, but then this. familiar voice returns. >> my bed be? Seven hells. >> Tyland Lannister lives, somehow. I mean, those rocks in the Dragonstone pass and. his heavy, heavy armor in season 3. episode 1 made him look like he was done. for, especially considering the dragon.
seeds were patrolling every corner of. that. Makes it crazy to think that this. guy somehow survived, but we know some. of those triarchy pirates did make their. way inland. Mysaria catches Alicent and. Helaena trying to sneak out in these. goofy maid outfits and Alicent appeals. to the White Worm to play all sides and. not just be lapdog to the queen, smartly. bringing up that Daemon is a pretty bad. influence on Rhaenyra ultimately his. arguments will always win out over. Mysaria's arguments. Helaena interrupts. here. >> to see the moon. >> Why does Helaena need to see the moon? Maybe something to do with the phases of.
the moon and how the nightshade plants. would interact with those phases upon. which this moth caterpillar could. cocoon. The scene does end with Helaena. looking into the terrarium she was. trying to carry out of there where this. caterpillar inches around. I'm telling. you there's something about this moth. caterpillar and how it cocoons and how. it can hatch into a butterfly that is. bringing about some prophecy that only. Helaena understands. Criston's host. finds Vermithor's giant scorched. footprint and then their host gets. bogged down in this muddy field where. Gwyn gets a leech on his knee. Remember. Oscar Tully saying that they needed to. bury their men in the mud? Now it has a.
deeper meaning. He understands the mud. of the Riverlands, where the muddiest. routes are, and how to force his enemies. to get trapped in that mud. Meanwhile, another group of would-be assassins. scale the rocky cliff of Harrenhal that. borders this part of the Gods Eye lake. At the top of this cliff is where the. weirwood tree in the courtyard is. The. exact tree where Daemon had his vision. at the end of season two. And that's. super interesting because in that scene. we definitely saw a green man walk past. that tree. So did this antler dude just. start hopping down that cliff like a. mountain goat? Either way, I love the. geographical layout of this because now.
this tree has a clear view across the. lake toward the Isle of Faces, where all. the other weirwood trees would be. But. these men are probably Ironborn because. when one of them assaults Alys Rivers, he says he's going to make her his salt. wife. That's a very particular term that. refers to a very dark tradition within. Ironborn culture, referring to women. kidnapped during raids and forced to. serve their captor in sometimes. polygamous households. And it's. interesting to note that Harren the. Black, or Harren the Cruel as Alys. called him, was actually an Ironborn. originally. So maybe these Ironborn are.
thinking about that history. Like the. phrase, it's just another example of. people feeling like Harrenhal belongs to. them. Aemond comes in with a sword, which would be Blackfyre. Yes, the sword. of Aegon the Conqueror. That should be. Aegon's sword. And he fights these. Ironborn off. And maybe it's that. Valyrian steel that makes all of these. hits so loud. Actually, the final kill is this guy on. a sharp root of the weirwood tree. itself. Whoa. It's kind of like X-24. killing Wolverine in 2017's Logan. It's. just a good reminder that these white.
wooded trees are powerful in all kinds. of ways. Tyland and Larys debate whether. Aegon can survive the Braavosi heat, and. not to mention the monkeys. This recalls. season two episode eight, which opened. with one of those monkeys in Braavos, and one time Maester Arryk telling. Tyland Lannister dabbing his sweaty. forehead and and away the flies. Honestly, I think he is the one afraid. to return to Bravos. He says that the. Triarchy. >> I've eaten fought with them, shared. everything with them, even their. >> Yes. >> He was about to say share their wives. Remember Sharaqo Lohar in episode 8 of. season 2 told them that she wanted. children from him and wanted him to have.
sex with her wives. >> How many wives do you have? >> Now Tyland wants to bring Aegon to. Lannisport, which Larys accuses to be a. ploy by the Lannisters to declare. Casterly Rock the new seat of the. Greens. Indeed, it is where Balerion it. would be smart for Vhagar to hide and. it's where Tyland did hide a portion of. the crown's gold that is still missing. And now that Tyland Lannister is. revealed to be alive on the show, the. person with all the receipts of where. the crown's gold is hidden is back in. play and he could be a very important. asset to the Greens. Jonos finds the.
conqueror's crown in Aegon's bag like. he's sniffing for immunity idols and. Aegon pounces on him stabbing him with. I'm pretty sure that's the scale he. plucked off of Sunfyre. And Daemon, like. he promised Luthor Largent he would. earlier, this rogue prince now makes a. rousing speech promising to pay the Gold. Cloaks double what they were making and. expand Rhaenys' empire to Dorne and make. the Seven Kingdoms the Nine Kingdoms. This recalls the humorous exchange at. the end of the first season of A Knight. of the Seven Kingdoms. The Seven. Kingdoms are the North, the Riverlands, the Vale, the Westerlands, the. Stormlands, the Crownlands and the. Reach. The other two would be Dorne and.
the Iron Islands. The Crownlands are not. included in that because they kind of. just refer to the general areas around. King's Landing that were historically. part of the Riverlands and the. Stormlands. You got to think of King's. Landing and the Crownlands as kind of. like the Washington D.C. But then Daemon. says make those nine kingdoms the 12. kingdoms. So I guess the math there. would be the three free cities of Myr, Lys and Tyrosh that form the Triarchy or. maybe he's including Yi Ti in that. Either way, he promises for this new. empire to become the new Valyria. He's. really making the same pitch to these. boys that he made to Rhaenyra back in. episode 3 to conquer Yi Ti and go to the.
city of the Winged Men. Rhaenyra shut. him down in that conversation but these. guys are all like, "I want me a Winged. Man." He promises to find riches from. colonizing all of these places and to. share the spoils with all of them. Renewed in their efforts, Damon and. Luther torture this man who claims to. have worked on behalf of Orban's. operative to kill some of those gold. cloaks and he shows them one of Darren's. coins. I honestly think the plan of the. operative was to let this guy get. captured to let their guard down so that. the real operatives could go in and kill. all of them. After finding the river. bridge cut off from the path to the. stony sept, Gwyn realizes their plan to.
get ahead of Tully's group has failed. Now, since that water would be flowing. downstream, Blackwater Rush, I don't. know why they wouldn't just wait for. that barge to float by them jump on. board that barge and then kill that. small host and then sink that barge. But. I get it, they're tired and they're. covered in leeches and hey, maybe they. think that the barge already floated. downstream. But Gwyn also realizes that. Criston is in a far more nihilistic. place than he realized. It really seems. like Criston has just been waiting to. die ever since Alicent stopped him from. ending things in the godswood. He's just. kind of tired of being used by these. high lords and he wants to go out in a.
blaze of glory to impress Alicent. >> I'm the realm's greatest warrior and I. will die as such. >> As he talks here, he uses the term. unbent, which I think could be a. reference to his Dornish roots. As the. son of the steward of the house. Sunderland in the Stormlands, Allen. briefs Rhaenyra on the impact of the. Battle of the Gullet on Driftmark. Actually, the close-up of the ledger. that he shows her shows all the galleys. of different families of Driftmark and. Spicetown that were all shattered when. Ser Laenor ordered part of her fleet to. go sack the island. And that cat that. had slipped into Alicent's room earlier. when Mysaria came in finds another.
hidden passageway that was there behind. one of those dragon orgy paintings. The. episode ends with three characters all. trying to fight dimly lit paths through. the darkness. There's Ser Criston Cole. trying to invoke the light of the Seven. with a prayer to each of the seven gods. to watch over them as they ride to ruin, really trying to lay the opening tracks. to the song that he hopes will outlive. him and reach Alicent's ears. Then, Alicent and Helena finding this. passageway that's been sealed off with. bricks and that seemingly helpful cat. scares Helena into dropping the lantern. and since they sealed the opening behind. them shut, they could be trapped in.
darkness with no one to hear or find. them. And lastly, Damon, the rogue. prince, creeping through the sacked gold. cloaks headquarters to find Luther. Largent and all these other boys he. inspired arranged in this grizzly last. supper with candles left lit like some. kind of psychopathic display. Their. entrails on the table for this beast and. in blood on the wall written, "A feast. for traitors." Phrase that parallels the. fourth of George R.R. Martin's A Song of. Ice and Fire series, A Feast for Crows. And on this, Ser Criston's prayer ends. on, "Stranger [music] office his rest.".
The Stranger, one of the seven gods that. Damon sneered at in the Sept earlier, is. the one of the seven who brings death. So, old Helaena seems to be having a bit. too much fun arranging these things. But. yes, Damon's focus on these Goldcloaks. who looked up to him has been kind of a. waste of his time. And the city Rhaenyra. hopes to keep the peace in has no. peacekeepers to patrol it now. Let's end. this in the spoiler dungeon. I'm now. going to be talking about future events. that we know are happening from the. books, so you're free to stop watching. if you don't want to know anything about. future events. Okay, hopefully this. Battle of Tumbleton is coming next.
episode in episode six. I think it's. going to be a big one because they are. screening the episode a day early at San. Diego Comic-Con. So, I think that's. going to be a big episode. My theory is. that the writers are actually going to. merge the Battle of Tumbleton with the. Butcher's Ball. And they're going to. have everything go down right there in. one big battle, including the death of. Criston Cole, the death of Ormund, Hugh. on Vermithor and Ulf on Silverwing. switching sides, kind of another Battle. of the Gullet where there's really no. victor coming away from that battle. But. based off of promo shots, it looks like. Damon might fly Caraxes there. So, it's. going to get even fiery-er or even.
messier. It also looks like they're. going to catapult some stuff into. Tumbleton. And based on what Rhaenyra. learned about Ormund having his aversion. to foul odors, I wonder if that's just. going to be poop that they fling at. them. Poop. Okay, let's talk about. Aemond's dreams of his brother Aegon and. the vision dream of Daeron's eye. opening. Yes, it does seem like all of. these are setting up the battle over the. Gods' Eye lake. And if Tumbleton happens. in episode six, that would leave two. more episodes after that in season. three. So, could we see the Battle of. the Gods' Eye lake being teed up in the. final shot of season three? Or would.
that be too soon? I don't think they're. going to finish that battle in season 3. They're going to want to keep viewers. watching to have something to look. forward to for Matt Smith in season 4. I. just think that'd be a really cool way. to begin season 4. Okay, Helaena and. Alicent, they ain't going to suffocate. in that tunnel. I don't know why this. episode ended with them getting trapped. in there like it was a cliffhanger. Olivia Cooke is one of the top three. faces of the series, but let's talk. about Joffrey. I think this whole thing. of Rhaenyra neglecting Joffrey, "Mommy. won't talk to me." will lead him to. connect with Helaena and take pity on. her. Remember how Helaena said that she.
always liked Rhaenyra's three sons? Well, the last living of those sons is. Joffrey. So, maybe Joffrey will help. Helaena get to the Dragonpit. And she. might do something with Dreamfyre there. But, speaking of Jaehaera, Jaehaera. possibly being a dreamer in her own. right. There were these rumors that I. talked about in the spoiler dungeon last. week that we're going to see a. 10-year-old Jaehaera at some point on. this. I still don't really know what. puzzle Alicent was referring to. But, I'm going to be theorizing about it all. week. I'm a little worried about the. reference to nightshade, a poison, specifically because we heard of. Bitterbridge this episode. Remember. Bitterbridge? That's where things go.
down with Maelor in Fire & Blood. I'm. wondering if that's where Jaehaera could. meet her end. I don't want to see any. more kids die on this show. So, let's. hope not.
