Doctor Doom’s Face in Avengers Doomsday Will Look DISGUSTING
Did the Russo brothers just reveal what. Dr. Doom will look like under the mask? Welcome back to New Rockstars. I'm Erik. Voss and is the reason they are hiding. Robert Downey Jr.'s face as Dr. Doom in. all these Doomsday trailers is that he. is hideously wounded to the point of. being unrecognizable? New quotes from. the Doomsday directors have completely. changed my expectations for what Robert. Downey Jr. will look like in this movie. and I'm going to break down everything. that we just learned. And we're going to. try a new thing here for any discussion. of the rumored leaks that are going. around out there for all of our Doomsday. videos. We're now going to be shifting.
all of that discussion to a section at. the end of the video so you have the. option to opt out if you don't want to. participate in that. And to name this. segment, we are resurrecting our old. format and calling it the rumor rundown. By the way, I'm wearing our The Physics. Are Theoretical But The Fun Is Real. Shirts That Peter Parker Wears In. Spider-Man Brand New Day Available. Exclusively At Our Merch Store. nerdriot.shop. We love it when our. viewers wear our gear out in the world, post selfies and tag us like Shoebox. Mark Indeed New Heat and that's another. shirt that Peter Parker wears in. Spider-Man Brand New Day. Empire.
Magazine this week included a write-up. from Chris Hewitt recapping San Diego. Comic-Con and some exclusive quotes he. got from the Doomsday cast and crew that. are only now going to print. Among the. quotes from this Empire article, quote, "It's an incredibly ambitious film," Joe. Russo tells Empire after the panel, "and. it's by far and away the biggest. crossover that Marvel's ever seen. It's. an absolute collision of three gigantic. universes coming together in the face of. a very serious existential threat.". James Marsden says, "You're seeing time. on screen. You're seeing these. characters from 27 years ago in new.
costumes with new intentions and. intensities." Then the article discusses. the legacy of Dr. Doom on screen. writing, "But Doom has never been done. right. That's the challenge that the. Russos, Feige, and Downey Jr. faced. They seem confident that they've met it. mask on. He's the greatest actor of his. time," Feige tells us, "and he can pull. off anything. Robert found something. fairly quickly." Then the article talks. about how Doom rarely takes his mask off. in this movie which presented Robert. Downey Jr. with something of a. challenge. Quote, "It's really elegant. work that he's doing," adds Joe Russo. "And he had to think a lot about his.
body and his eyes and how to convey. emotion and intensity in his movement. and very subtle eye movement." Then the. next page adds this interesting tidbit. As for how Downey Jr. pulled it off on. set, while a Doom costume was briefly on. display at the Marvel booth on. Comic-Con's main floor, Joe Russo. confirms that the performance itself is. a quote combination of things, including. performance capture, something Downey. Jr. saw firsthand with James Spader on. Age of Ultron and Josh Brolin in. Infinity War / Endgame. Quote, "I think. Downey had a lot of the same fun on this. with Doom," says Anthony Russo. "He was.
on set performing everything. Because of. the way we're creating the character. with a digital layer, we also get a. second pass at him in terms of what we. can do on a digital level. There was a. lot of experimental performance. It's. incredible, but also unexpected. What he. brings to the table, you couldn't see. coming." Certainly, there seems to be. nothing of Tony Stark in Downey Jr.'s. imperious and intimidating Doom. Zero. similarities is how Joe Russo puts it. Whoa, interesting. Up until this point, we had assumed that for his role as. Victor von Doom, Robert Downey Jr. would. spend most of his time on screen within.
his armored masked form, only his eyes. visible through the mask eyeholes, but. that in moments that we see his face, it. would be scarred somewhat using like. applied latex, but nothing so extreme as. to make him unrecognizable. I was. thinking, you know, the latex scarring. worn by Heath Ledger as the Joker in The. Dark Knight. While Ledger was arguably. unrecognizable, it was really the. combination of the latex scarring and. the face paint. And of course, the full. vocal and physical performance. If you. remember the brief glimpse in which we. saw Ledger when he was in disguise as a. policeman with no makeup, he didn't look. quite like himself there. But with the.
Russos now revealing that for the. unmasked Victor von Doom, they created. the character with performance capture. in a complete digital layer, this is. crazy. That would mean that no amount of. latex would be sufficient to convey what. Victor looks like in this movie. Downey. would need to be in some kind of fractal. mocap suit with the specific reference. points dotted on his face like what was. worn by James Spader in Age of Ultron. and Josh Brolin as Thanos. To be clear, Mark Ruffalo was also doing this kind of. thing as the Hulk in a similar suit. earlier than this in 2012's Avengers,
but Robert Downey Jr. himself did not. ever need to be on the sound stage at. the same time as Ruffalo doing his. physical performance capture work. Now, Downey himself has been transformed with. VFX in a Marvel movie before. The first. 20 minutes of Avengers: Endgame. digitally reduced his face, his neck, his chest, and arms to show how Tony was. emaciated from nearly dying of. starvation on the Benatar ship in space. for a few weeks. And in the opening. scene of Captain America: Civil War, the. Russo brothers de-aged Robert Downey Jr. to show Tony as he would have looked. like in his early 20s. I mean, Marvel. Studios arguably started this whole. spectacle of thinning out and reducing.
an iconic actor's face with a skinny. Steve Rogers visual effect in 2011's. Captain America: The First Avenger. So, I think what we can expect here is. something similar. Digital CGI that. lessens and erases parts of the face and. head as Victor. There are a few iconic. examples that might be coming to mind. here. Aaron Eckhart's scarred face as. Harvey Dent Two-Face in Christopher. Nolan's The Dark Knight, which had to. erase and burn away his skin, his cheek, and muscle tissue to expose his jaw and. gums. Also, Javier Bardem's eroded jaw. as Raoul Silva in 2012's Skyfall.
directed by Sam Mendes. In a scene in. that movie, Silva pulled out his. dentures to reveal his teeth and gums. had to corroded from a hydrogen cyanide. pill and that his cheek now sagged. inward causing his eye socket to droop. There are also famous examples of. erasing the nose like with Red Skull in. Captain America: The First Avenger and. his return in Infinity War. And erasing. Ralph Fiennes' nose as Voldemort in the. Harry Potter films. So, what will Doctor. Doom's face look like when we see it in. this movie? Well, so far from what we. know, his eyes and the tissue around. them are still intact. We can see both.
of his green eyes and his eyelids and. eyelashes. And the Russo brothers made. it clear there's going to be a lot of. eye acting in this movie. But, his mouth. must also still mostly be intact. Like, he seems to still be able to pronounce. most of the vowel and consonant sounds. without any audible speech impediment. >> Something's coming. Something we may not. be able to deter. Before this day is. done, we shall be faced with an. unthinkable decision. All of you have. lived and stolen lives. And now you must.
give them back. Hell. answers to me, for I. am. Doom. >> So yeah, in that dialogue you can hear a. lot of s's, m's, b's, v's, and back of. mouth k's that are really hard to do if. there's any damage to the lips, the. teeth, or the tongue. Sound just does. not get shaped the same way if any part. of your lips are worn away or your. cheeks or inner gums are just exposed to. the open air. So that really just leaves. the nose, the upper cheeks, the ears, the neck, and the overall top and back.
insides of the cranium. I think there's. just going to be a huge gash across. Dooms face that leaves a massive concave. scar where his nose used to be going. across the side of his head to burn away. his hair and maybe even expose his. skull. In Jonathan Hickman's Secret Wars. number three, art of Esad Ribic shows. this moment when a memory wiped Susan. Storm, who's actually now God Emperor. Doom's wife/consort in Battleworld, comforts him over his inability to. remove his mask and show people his. disfigured face. When it comes to Doctor. Doom's scarring, historically there was. a disagreement between Stan Lee and Jack.
Kirby over how disfigured Doctor Doom. should be under the mask. In Jack. Kirby's view, after the college. explosion that injured Victor after Ben. Grimm tinkered with Victor's. experimental device, it was supposed to. leave him with just a minor scar that. still left him an otherwise handsome. man. And it was Kirby's idea that. Victor's vanity is what led him to hide. his face behind the mask. But Stan Lee, in The Mighty Thor number 182, preferred. the idea that Doom be horrifically. disfigured as described by the horror of. characters who caught a glimpse of his. face under the mask. They were kind of. like, "Ugh!" But then after this, writers like.
John Byrne in Fantastic Four number 278. fused the two ideas so that Doom. originally suffered only a minor scar in. that initial explosion in college, but. then was driven mad by vanity. So he. went to a Tibetan monastery to forge a. mask, and then he put on that mask while. it was still super hot and ruined the. rest of his face. Several of us at New. Now, when it. comes to what we're going to see in this. movie, Avengers: Doomsday is going to be. a PG-13 movie, but the MPA nowadays lets.
major films get away with a lot of. violence and supposed gore so long as. you limit the amount of red blood and. red bloody tissue that's shown on. screen. For example, Doctor Strange in. the Multiverse of Madness graphically. imploded Black Bolt's skull and even had. some of those brains oozing out of his. eyes and nostrils, but that soup was. mostly contained within his headgear. Reed Richards was spaghettified and his. head was popped, but it was done with. scarlet colored magic, not blood. And. Captain Peggy Carter was split in half. at the midsection, but we stayed on her.
face in close-up and we only saw the top. half of her body sliding off of the. lower half in the distant background out. of focus without any visible blood. We. may remember back in 2005, Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith stayed PG-13 despite. showing Hayden Christensen screaming. while his face was on fire. But, the MPA. now in 2026 just does have different. standards than it did in 2005. Especially when it comes to these movies. needing to do really well in overseas. markets like in Indonesia, Saudi Arabia, China, and Brazil. The global film. market is in a much different place now. in 2026 than it was back in 2005. So,
with Doctor Doom's scars in this movie, even if his face is burned away, so long. as the VFX artists show that scar tissue. to be gray or black or brown, they can. even expose Doom's exposed cracked skull. and pulsing brain while containing it in. a barrier of like glowing green magic. and still keep things PG-13. I actually. think Robert Downey Jr. took this role. in order to face the challenge of being. completely unrecognizable as an iconic. villain. And for many actors, when. they're looking at past iconic villains. in the comic book or fantasy genre like.
Heath Ledger's Joker, Josh Brolin's. Thanos, Ralph Fiennes' Voldemort, Bill. Nighy's Davy Jones, Bill Skarsgård's. Pennywise, Andy Serkis' Gollum, or even. just Darth Vader, mask on or mask off, some kind of physical transformation. using filmmaking magic and physically. challenging clowning work on part of the. actor, that kind of performance seems to. be what's exciting Downey about this. role. I actually think he wants to go. for an Oscar as Victor Von Doom. So, how. did Doctor Doom get these scars? >> You know how I got these scars? >> At least in this new MCU continuity. Well, the second trailer hints at some. past tragedy.
>> And then, everything he loved was taken. from him. I knew he was lost, but I did. not realize that he was broken. >> I think we can assume from this trailer. footage alone that the tragedy that took. Victor's wife and child is also what. left him scarred and physically broken. But, from here, I think we now have to. shift into our rumor rundown section to. acknowledge the unsubstantiated. information that people are assuming. might be true from the rumored leak. that's going around. Feel free to stop. watching now if you don't want any part. of this Okay, this plot. description claiming to be a leak that.
we've discussed in other videos includes. this part later in the movie after they. realize that Doom is villainous and. confront Doom on his Earth and meet his. masked witches. And again, this is not a. confirmed leak. We don't know if this is. real. Big old pinch of salt here. It. reads, "Doom reveals that Steve's. presence in their universe is what. triggered their incursion because he. didn't belong there. It also led to the. death of Doom's family. Doom became. obsessed with stopping the incursion. conducting dangerous experiments, one of. which failed killing his family and. leaving him disfigured forcing him to.
wear the armor and mask." Hmm, okay. So, I have some follow-ups when I read this. Doom's castle is clearly still intact in. all of the trailer footage. So, whatever. violent fire or explosion killed his. wife and child and scarred his face, he. seemed to be able to rebuild his castle. pretty effectively unless he's. conducting these experiments in a. completely other location. But, why. would he be bringing his wife and child. to that location while he's conducting. these experiments? Unless he was using. some kind of sorcery or witchcraft that. targeted people closest to Doom. But, in.
either case, wouldn't Doom be blaming. himself for this, not Steve Rogers? Like, Doom's a smart enough guy to know. that it was his obsession in conducting. these experiments in a reckless way that. resulted in him losing his family and. looking the way that he does. But, really the next sentence in this leak is. the biggest reason I have doubted it. since the beginning. As revenge, Doom. kills Steve's son in front of him. Now, we don't know how old Steve's baby son. will be in this movie. He could be a. teenager. But, while Disney Marvel. movies can show extreme violence and. suggested gore in PG-13 movies, Disney.
and the MPA are far more protective when. it comes to showing fatal violence. against children in movies on screen. Now, I know what you're going to say. In. Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith, the. killed. Yep, that was in 2005 before. Star Wars was purchased by Disney and. they didn't stay in the scene where they. died. And again, the MPA standards and. global film market standards, sensitivities, and preferences have. changed in the past 21 years. But, then. you might argue, "Well, the 2022 Obi-Wan. Kenobi series on Disney Plus, we. revisited Order 66. Yes, but the MPA. doesn't govern streaming. Disney Plus is.
not available in all countries. They can. do a lot more on streaming than they can. in movies. And you may remember that. episode actually proceeded with a. content warning since the episode came. out the day after the tragic Uvalde. shooting. But you may also argue, "Hey, teenage Peter Parker totally dusted in. Infinity War." Yeah, dusting's not the. same thing as vengeful murder on screen. Now, sure, maybe the killing of Steve's. son is actually done by Doctor Doom. pruning this kid with that ultimate. nullifier device that the figurine has. in his hand. And maybe it's a kind of. cleaner, more sanitized eraser from.
existence rather than murder. And the. kid could just end up respawning in. Battleworld. And it's like a temporary. shock. Either way, the wording of this. leak right here, I think is either just. misinterpreting things or it could just. be a completely made up part that they. added to all these other actually. accurate parts. I just don't think. Disney in their most important movie of. the year, that they need to make $2. billion will savagely murder a child in. cold blood on screen. I think if there. is a death, it's just going to be more. sanitized and like more fantastical than. how it sounds here. Comment down below.
