AVENGERS ENDGAME ENCORE TRAILER BREAKDOWN: Did Marvel Re-Color Endgame?
We need to talk about why this looks so. much better than this. Welcome back to. New Rockstars. I'm Eric Boss and Marvel. Studios Avengers Endgame Encore is. coming September 25th. With a new. trailer promising this Endgame. re-release with an exclusive look at. Avengers Doomsday and several iconic. shots from the 2019 film that, if you. look closely, have been re-colored and. brightened. So, I'm going to break down. this trailer to explain why Marvel is. using these shots from Endgame to try to. get us excited for Doomsday and this. Endgame Encore event and some other.
interesting details that you might have. missed from this edit. And when it comes. to the coloring, why it looks like this. This why it looks like this format is. actually a new series that we've been. rolling out this year to try to explain. the artistry and technique behind all. the films and TV that we love. And if. you haven't already, please check out. our episodes on Spider-Man Brand New. Day, A24's Backrooms, and Superman. And. before we get into it, the shirt I'm. wearing is our Immovable Doom shirt, one. of our Doomsday-inspired designs. available exclusively at our merch store. nerdriot.shop. We love it when our. viewers wear our gear out in the world.
and then post selfies and tag us like. this badass Razer Dad. Dude, do you want. to be a model for New Rockstars cuz you. make the shirt look so cool. And you, Cat Toto 1, nice shirt and nice ride. Look at this $0 haul, $0 jelly fruits, $0 Skittles, $0 One Piece sodas. It. should be impossible, but if you open up. your Temu app and type our $0 gift code. kje2859. in the search bar, you'll instantly. unlock a ton of $0 Temu has always been.
the easiest way to get whatever you want. shipped straight to your door. But now. that they're running a $0 shopping. event, Temu users who make a qualifying. purchase and use our code can claim $0. gifts. use code KJE2859. can get selected products for $0. Okay, Avengers: Endgame Encore is coming. September 25th and it's reportedly going. to be 3 hours and 5 minutes long, which. is 4 minutes longer than the 3 hours and. 1 minute that Endgame's final run time. was in 2019. So, that means we can. expect an extra 4 minutes of bonus. footage when it comes to whatever bonus. stuff they're going to show for. Doomsday. I mean, anything can happen in. 4 minutes. That's like eight times the. amount of time I need to get stuff done. It's enough time for like a short scene.
and maybe a sizzle reel that amounts to. a trailer. I've been suspecting it's. going to be a new post-credit scene to. Avengers: Endgame that builds on the. Iron Man hammering sound effect that. originally played in the Endgame. credits. It can now be redefined as Victor Von. Doom hammering his armor together in the. Doomstadt armory. I don't know if that. will be the opening scene of Avengers: Doomsday, but I think it's going to be a. particular scene somewhere we see in the. first act of the film. But, this. Avengers: Endgame Encore trailer opens. with a shot of Captain America, Steve. Rogers, tightening his broken shield on.
his wounded arm as he faced Thanos alone. in the Battle of Earth. But, then we. hear the audio of Sam Wilson returning. from dust from the blip after Hulk. snapped everyone back into existence. >> Hey Cap, you read me? Cap, it's Sam. Can you hear me? >> And then we see some footage from the. opening night screenings from April. 26th, 2019 of the audience losing their. minds at the portals moment. >> [cheering]. >> Also, who had their phones out recording.
this? Get Straw Hat Goofy on the case. >> Put your phone down. >> Now, we see the shot of Iron Man landing. to face Thanos when he and Cap faced him. before the battle really broke out. Then. we see Thor summoning Stormbreaker to. his hand, Peter Parker in the Iron. Spider nanotech suit arriving through. the portal, Cap lining up with his other. returning heroes, catching Mjolnir, and. Thanos raising his Uru sword with his. forces behind him and THEN CAP SAYING. "AVENGERS, ASSEMBLE!" TO KICK off the. charge. We see the Guardians' ship, the. Benatar, floating in space and Tony. looking out the window emaciated from.
being stranded for a few weeks. We see. his Iron Man helmet recording his final. goodbye message to Pepper when he. thought he was going to die. And then we. see the moment from the end of the time. heist planning sessions where everyone. looked at a camera, I assume just. looking at a wall. And then we see the. group stepping up on the quantum tunnel. platform in their time travel suits and. putting their hands in the middle. And. then we see the moment the Benatar. during the time heist goes from Morag to. Vormir after Clint and Natasha dropped. off Rhodey and Nebula. And then we see. the Benatar from earlier in the film. when Carol Danvers joined the Avengers. without Tony to try to find Thanos on. the garden to try to quickly get.
vengeance against him in a couple of. weeks after the snap. And then we see. Clint holding Natasha's hand on Vormir. moments before he tried to make the. sacrifice jump for the soul stone before. she would end up stopping him. And then. we see the Ancient One pushing Bruce. Banner's soul out of Hulk's body onto. the astral plane. And then we see the. moment Tony Stark was in Camp Lehigh in. 1970 in the basement of Shield storage. to retrieve the Tesseract. And we see. Cap in the lower level of Avengers Tower. during the time heist fighting his 2012. self played by stunt actor and feature. extraction director Sam Hargrave. We see. Avengers compound being bombed by. Thanos's bombardment from the Sanctuary.
2. We see Nebula and Gamora turning to. see the entrance of 2014 Thanos during. the time heist sequence. We see Steve. Rogers at the end of the movie as Sam. and Bucky look up at him on the new. quantum tunnel platform carrying the six. Infinity Stones in the suitcase and the. version of Mjolnir that was taken from. 2013 Asgard during the time heist. planning to return all of these things. And then we see the moment Smart Hulk. wore the nano gauntlet with the six. Infinity Stones to snap all of the. dusted lives back into existence. And we. see Thor holding Stormbreaker and. Mjolnir as the three stepped forward to. face 2014 Thanos at the beginning of the. Battle of Earth. And we see Carol.
Danvers on the Avengers compound lawn. after bringing Tony and Nebula back to. Earth in the Benatar. And we see Wanda. Maximoff when she fought Thanos. one-on-one during the battle using her. scarlet sorcery to raise rebel against. him saying "You took everything from. me." And he's like "I don't know who you. are." And then we see the moment Nebula. reached into the radiation field to. retrieve the orb on Morag to get the. power stone. And we see Rocket on War. Machine Rhodey's shoulder as Giant Man. Scott Lang appears behind them during. the early lineup of the Battle of Earth. And then we see Loki the moment he took. the Tesseract during the time heist and. used it to escape kicking off his arc on.
the Loki series. And we see Clint and. Natasha pressing their heads together. before the cliff jump on Vormir. And we. see the moment Tony Stark snaps the six. stones after saying I am Iron Man. And. before we get into the visual analysis. here, a few things we should note with. what they chose to show and what they. didn't choose to show. First off, they. changed Tony Stark's important line from. right after Thanos bombed Avengers. compound. In the 2019 film, Tony says. this. >> You mess with time, it tends to mess. back. >> But now in this trailer for Endgame On. Core, the line is this. >> You mess with time,
time tends to mess back. >> It's subtle, but it is different. Did. they have Robert Downey Jr. record a new. take on the line? Or did they just use. another take that was already on file. from ADR sessions in 2019? I wonder if. Downey might have recorded a new line. and a flashback to this moment will be. included in the scene in Avengers: Doomsday. Why is this important? Well, when we heard this line in Endgame, especially in the months and years after. Endgame, we really held onto it as a. potential clue for something like Kang. the Conqueror. In the context of the. scene, Tony was referring to the.
unforeseen consequences of 2014 Thanos. coming from the past to find them in the. present to bomb their compound. But more. broadly, it also hints at other. consequences of the Avengers time heist. actions that they just don't know about. yet, the unknown unknowns. So, back in. 2022, sure, it could have referred to. Kang. But now in this new version of the. multiverse saga where it's all about. Doctor Doom, I think we are going to. revisit it in Doomsday as we realize. Tony Stark's words were a warning for. Doctor Doom. With the character played. by Downey predicting the arrival of. another character played by Downey. This.
trailer really underlines that by. including shots of Steve readying to. return the stones at the end of Endgame, reminding us of his mysterious. off-screen journey that ended with him. staying in the past with Peggy Carter, a. choice that will have consequences with. what happens in Doomsday. They also. highlight the moment Loki escaped with. the Tesseract, wanting to remind viewers. that the time heist had the consequence. of putting the god of mischief on his. path to become an agent of the Time. Variance Authority, and then the guy who. saved the TVA from destruction by. becoming the god of stories, a certain. power that Doom is going to be very. interested in in Doomsday. But most.
visually striking about all of these. shots in the new Avengers Endgame encore. trailer is that they have all been. brightened, recolorized, and given a. sharper contrast. Even in the opening. shot of Steve tightening the shield. strap on his arm to form the tourniquet, you can now see some red in the open. wound on his arm, when in the 2019 film. version of the shot you could hardly. tell it was a wound at all. And then in. this shot of the Avengers assemble. charge, Cap, Hulk, and Thor all look way. more colorful, brighter, and with. sharper contrast than they did in the. 2019 version of the shot. And in the new.
encore version of it, you can see Wanda. glowing red behind them, when she wasn't. as pronounced before in the original. version of the shot. And speaking of. Wanda, these shots of Wanda fighting. Thanos are way more red on her and on. the surrounding rubble here in the. encore version than she was in the 2019. version of the shot. The blues and flesh. tones of all the heroes in the group. shot, and specifically on Cap fighting. his 2012 variant, are all much brighter, sharper, and crisper than the versions. of these shots that were in the old. version. In the shot of Smart Hulk. screaming as he tries to control the. nano gauntlet and the six Infinity.
Stones to snap all of them together, it's way more vibrant here than it was. compared to the original version. It. actually looks like 4K YouTube. thumbnails that have done special. filters over it and put on YouTube. And. then Thanos in this final battle. actually looks like a brighter shade of. purple than his grayer appearance that. he had in the 2019 film. And in these. critical moments of Spider-Man coming. back through the portal and Tony Stark. snapping, we see the properly saturated. versions now in the encore trailer, really bringing out the oranges and reds. of Tony's face and the blood of his cuts.
compared to the 2019 version, where Tony. kind of looks like these aren't even. bloody cuts, it's just kind of soot. So. the colorist doing the work for Avengers. is Tom Poole, co-founder of the film and. TV coloring firm Company who is also the. senior colorist on Spider-Man Brand New. Day. Now, before you say that's the only. difference, he was also the colorist on. a lot of films you might not have loved. the visual look of, but that's really a. testament to a film's look being mostly. a product of the full team and the. vision of the project coming from the. combined efforts of the director or. directors, director of photography, production designer, costumer, VFX.
supervisor, editor, and colorist. Tom. Poole has done interviews saying that. his job as a colorist isn't for his work. to stand out, but to complement and. underscore the vision of the director. photography. We also don't know if Tom. Poole did the coloring work on this. encore trailer, but we do know that with. Avengers Endgame, when it was released. in 2019, it was really the capstone of. an era of Marvel Studios films directed. by the Russo brothers working with. Canadian director photography Trent. Opaloch, who before working with the. Russo brothers was a collaborator. working with Neill Blomkamp on his. shorts Yellow and Tempbot and Blomkamp's. features of District 9, Elysium, and.
Chappie. But, for Avengers Doomsday, the. Russo brothers are now partnering with. director photography Newton Thomas. Siegel, long-time cinematographer who. has recently partnered with the Russo. brothers for their AGBO films like. Extraction and Cherry, and before that. shot a lot of movies including many of. the Fox X-Men films. During the heyday. of Marvel Studios films between 2016 and. 2019, one note that these films received. was for their color grading, specifically the desaturated colors of. the airport battle in Captain America: Civil War and the grayish purplish wash.
of the battle of Earth in Avengers: Endgame. In 2016, YouTuber Patrick H. Willems published a great video essay. that argued the Russo brothers and Trent. Opaloch shooting on the new Arri Alexa. resulted in color grading that lacked. proper black values, resulting in too. many shots looking visually flat. A few. years after that in 2020, after Endgame, YouTuber Zero Wolf published another. great video essay that refocused the. argument to explore color theory and how. Marvel crossover event movies present a. new challenge of sticking to a. consistent color palette by having to. feature multiple characters with their.
own uniquely colored suits to have to. share the screen together, which he. argued resulted in colorists having to. render the backgrounds as gray. I do. agree with his video essay that Infinity. War benefited by grouping many of the. red-toned superheroes on Titan with a. mostly red backdrop that fit better in. their palette, and then grouped all the. other characters on Earth. And he argued. that the Russos and Opalak's solution. for Endgame was just a backlit setting. that worked for the Battle of Earth that. equally desaturated everyone's suits by. making them covered in a kind of soot. While I think that many of the shots in.
the Battle of Earth were stunning, I'm. not so sure I agree with the lighting. and coloring serving Endgame's visual. style all that well in retrospect. The. soot and grime that all of these Marvel. heroes fought with in that sequence did. serve the epic bleakness of the stakes, but 7 years later, it does visually. strike me as just an epic event moment. that came at the end of the decade that. opened that established the visual. standard of epic franchise climax battle. as the Battle of Hogwarts in Harry. Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2, which is a very high-contrast and very.
desaturated sequence. Meanwhile, I think. a better-looking battle came a year. after that in 2012 with The Avengers, the Battle of New York shot by Joss. Whedon and his DP Seamus McGarvey. No. compromises on comic accurate and. palette-defined color diversity in that. film, and it looked great. And when we. look at trailer footage for Avengers: Doomsday, it's kind of hard to tell if. the Russo brothers are applying any. lessons from the past now that they're. working with DP Newton Thomas Sigel, colorist Tom Poole, and production. designer Kasra Farahani. From what I can. tell so far, there's a lot of exterior.
gray rubble battles that reminds me of. the Battle of Earth in Endgame. There's. a lot of backlighting like we saw in. Endgame. There's at least a few dim. interior fights that seem to dull in the. colors of Gambit and Shang-Chi. Chris. Evans looks like he showed up to set and. forgot his costume. But in the second. teaser released during D23, there is a. level of detail brought out in the. extreme close-ups of all these actors'. faces that allows them to do a level of. acting that I don't think we've seen. from any of them in their past Marvel. roles. There's just something raw and. human about the performances in Doomsday.
that this lighting and coloring is. conveying perfectly in the way that the. marketing for Infinity War and Endgame. did not really even come close to. So, why is Avengers: Endgame On Core now. being recolored to be more vibrant? Well, one, because I just think it. objectively looks better this way. And. really, it's going to serve Marvel. Studios' marketing objective of getting. people to see this re-release in. Infinity Vision premium large format. screens like IMAX, 4DX, and Dolby. For. those of you framing all Hollywood. decisions within late-stage capitalist. economic arguments, you could stop the. video there. But, there is a second.
reason here, and I think the brighter. colors are kind of a creative attempt to. reframe Endgame within viewers' minds as. a precursor crossover event on a similar. scale as the 2012 Battle of New York. Like a crass way of saying it could be, they want to reframe Endgame as a more. candy-ass penultimate conflict to the. realer and more raw showdown that. they're about to hit us with in. Doomsday. Will it work in that regard? Is this all just to make sure this 2019. film looks as good as it possibly can be. when we all pay to see it on IMAX with.
our Iron Man popcorn buckets? Maybe, probably. But hey, this all looks. freaking great, so I'm not complaining. So, this Friday is going to be the next. installment of our Essential Doomsday. Breakdown series where we are going to. revisit 2012's Avengers for the first. time in 6 years for dozens of more. Easter eggs we never found before. A. true must-watch before Doomsday. This. Essential Doomsday Breakdown series will. coincide with Avengers: On Core's. release on September 25th when we. reanalyze that whole Endgame film and. whatever Doomsday surprises they add to. it. 4 minutes! And this Saturday will be.

Every week on the In Our. Underground audio feed, subscribers can. listen to our Monday Mailbag podcast. where we answer your questions. Here's a. clip of me answering a question from. Monday's episode. >> I think the test for Doomsday is that. can it surpass the success of Deadpool. and Wolverine? Because Deadpool and.
Wolverine marketed itself as a big X-Men. crossover event. And it really wasn't when we saw. Deadpool and Wolverine. They kind of. used like they brought in other random. smaller X-Men characters. We didn't. really get to know Cassandra Nova that. well and the movie did really well. And I think Avengers Doomsday. will obviously bring in these Fox era. X-Men actors and maybe others, you know. It's certainly bringing the Fantastic.
Four and and maybe there will be others, you know. And I think. that if if it does a better job than. Deadpool and Wolverine delivering on. that, there will be people who feel like. Endgame that feel like Doomsday met the. hype of Endgame. >> Get the whole episode and join this. exclusive dialogue with me by clicking. the link in the description below.
