is the body cam footage of this. horrifying story and [music] we're. breaking it down for the first time. Welcome to Sidebar, presented by Law and. Crime. I'm Jesse Weber. This case is just tragic. It is just. terribly tragic. When DCF and police. showed up to a home in Sarasota, Florida. for a welfare check, they found a. 5-year-old girl alone in a room with no.

air conditioning on a 90° day. Her. diaper was so soiled it was almost. ripping apart from the weight. Her hair. was matted with food and debris. She. couldn't speak. And on top of it all, when police found her parents, they were. apparently sitting outside under a tent. drinking beer. Sarasota police say that. in September of 2025, they received a. tip claiming a girl was being locked in. a room and neglected. But what. investigators actually walked into was. so much worse than they ever could have.

prepared for because both parents, Crystal Kates and Torrance BS tested. positive for cocaine, THC, alcohol, and. even worse, BS had already told a. neighbor he killed a dog with a shovel. and buried it in the front yard. But. now, never before seen police body. camera footage is giving us an inside. look at what happened when both parents. sat down with detectives and tried to. explain themselves. >> Why am I getting arrested? That's that's. what I want to know.

>> Right. Have you ever um I know you said. your other three other of your kids were. put up for adoption. Um did you ever. think about that because of your. situation? No, actually we were doing. really good. >> Okay, >> so here's what police claim occurred. On. September 5th, 2025, the Sarasota Police. Department and the Department of. Children and Families got a call to. respond to a home on 24th Street. An. anonymous tip had been called into the. DCF hotline saying that a 5-year-old. girl was being locked in a room, that.

she wasn't being fed, and the DCF. officer questions why she wasn't. enrolled in school. So when the officer. and the DCF investigator arrived, they. found both parents apparently sitting. outside under a tent drinking beer. This. little girl nowhere in sight. So the. investigator told the parents that she. needed to see the home and where the. child slept. The body cam footage. captures that moment. >> Hi, >> how are you? >> Hello. >> Are you Crystal?

>> Yes. >> Okay. I'm with Department of Children. and Families. Um there's a report um. that we have a child here um and that. she's being kept in the home. She's not. she does not come outside. She's not. being fed. >> No, she's definitely being fed. Perfect. >> And she does feel my hair and I have to. do her hair. >> Okay. So, I do have to interview you. Um. um as well as uh I believe his name is. Torrance too, the father of her. Um and.

you have to speak I have to view your. home. home. I have to see where she. sleeps. Um, take a look pictures because. he's also stating that your home has. environmental hazards. It's very. cluttered. It is currently right now. laundry and stuff. >> Okay. So, so and then I bring an officer. for my safety regarding the report. He. will have another officer show up as. well. >> Um, what? >> What a warrant. >> It's This is DCF, >> guys. I I don't need a warrant for DCF.

And what is that place called? >> It is the urgent care university. I went and got her shots done. One of. the uh I'm assuming it may have been I'm.

not sure if it was a doctor or a nurse. needed information for $20. I can get. that done and finally we'll get her into. school and finally everything will get. back to normal and her life will come. back on track. I just got my license. So that's the. reason why our phone's so slow. >> And when did you receive your license? >> I got it in April. And then a lot of. turbulent happened in between such as. >> tickets. I got and then regarding uh you all just.

getting um. the physical and stuff with school. starting in August. What was the what. was the what was the delay? I've got my. password for you guys. So, I've been. trying to figure out how to get the. password for that so I can get back on. it because I finally paid everything for. you guys for the uh they had given me. money for EBT and then I had to pay it. back. So, that was a hard thing to do. when I finally had to pay back. It's.

like 530. something dollars I believe. And that was a big deal on us because. our rent not. >> So we didn't get her ready for school. because we have to pay back. >> Yes. Pay that back. But I should be able. to get her registered after I get this. >> The investigator then asks about. something else. She noticed the. drinking. And the body cam captures. Crystal's response.

>> Hello. >> So, um, how often are you all having. your beers? >> I don't really drink that often. Like, very rarely do I actually come out here. and chillax. >> Yes, he does. But he's always out here, you know, doing his thing out here. And. when I'm at work, he's in and out of the. house making sure everything's okay. Because, as you can tell, he's been. doing the lung and everything cuz it's a. hot mess after all this raining and. stuff.

So, when you're at work, she's care. Yeah. >> Okay. Does anybody else Is anybody else scared. or watch besides you? you out here with me. >> It's over there in the grass now on a. little. >> I don't know how my mother say she'll be. out here. I don't let her get up here in.

the trash cuz I got to clean it up. I. got to finish cleaning it. We also have. a can that always. you save enough. or it would always be in probably. both of you will have to sign because. you both are.

So, what we're having, >> that's crazy. >> We're doing everything else in our. house. It's all super tiny. A lot of our. stuff, getting all of our laundry. We. have so much crap that we have to get. >> Pretty much. >> Yeah. And then a lot of it's all all her. old stuff, too. Trying to get rid of the. dresser that's in her room that she's. completely destroyed cuz she's disrupted. when it comes to her room.

All right. So this is asking um if is um. part of any American Indian tri. The reason why we ask that is because if. she is, if you all are um unfortunately. in the entire have their own way of. doing things, one of those that are. listed and a part of it um then we have. to end the interview immediately.

And then also um if you have a gun in. the home, this is just saying that you. scoop it up your way out of reach. But the. investigator has heard that one before, so she needs to see inside the home. >> I'm so I'm literally finally getting.

there. You know what I'm saying? I. finally finally got my license back and. everything. And I finally got. everything. We were all done doing one. thing, man. Finally getting the house. ready. Finally pulled out stuff we. didn't even know we had anymore. >> Finally getting stuff out of her room so. we can finally redo her room. Oh, we got. one more thing, man. >> Me, too. I just want things to be. normal. We finally got there.

conversation, but the investigation will. still continue. meaning whatever we pull. from that information and whatever we. gather the department makes a the. department makes a decision. Um, and I. don't want that for you all. As you. stated, you're just not getting back on. your feet. Um, so we don't want that. But also, I want to tell you this is a. investigation of topic. >> Unfortunately, as bad as it seemed, as. annoying it is, um, we're always going. to come out for talking. And then also. because it came in as environmental. hazards, the home being cluttered and um. being technically what they want to call. malnourished. I'm going have to take.

pictures of your home and take pictures. Okay. Okay, that's fine. My she probably. needs a new paper. So, >> so by by the way, the body cam footage. is redacted when they go inside and the. arrest report kind of fills in what they. found. So, a child alone in a room with. a baby gate blocking the door, a diaper. so soiled it was almost ripping from the. weight. Hair matted with food and. debris, a dirty mattress with a torn. sheet, no blankets, no pillows, no. clothes in the closet, nothing that.

signified a child lived there. The. temperature outside that house was. approximately 90° with no AC running. So. when they come back out, the. investigator tells the parents what. happens next. >> Oh, I'm sorry. in right here. >> So, unfortunately, >> unfortunate um there's no problem. >> Fortunately, um right now we're going to. have to you all are going to have to um. call, make some calls, family members,

cousins, people that you trust. >> Um there will be a safety plan put in. place because the home has to be cleaned. up. It's a it's way too far. It's way. too It's I'm not leave. I'm not. She has. to until we can You have to get your. home cleaned up. Um and I won't I will. not be leaving here until someone comes. and picks up. Um so we have to get. someone to come to.

>> get her home so you and dad can take. some time to clean up, get everything. sorted. >> and in the fashion that is safe for her. Because although yes, she feels good. that she shouldn't be on here. >> Yeah, that's what's coming up. >> But also, >> that's what I was doing today. But after. she ripped it up. >> Yeah. But. >> understand this is respect to people. Like I don't think you all are bad. parents. I just think you need some.

>> And also, >> also, I want you all to know, I'm saying. all this to say that I can tell that you. all need services, and that's what the. department does. My goal is not to. remove your kid to cause trauma to your. kids. I don't that's I don't agree with. that. I'm not a fan of that. I can put. services in place. You all have to do. the services. You have to be willing and. wanting to do the services for this to. go in a better place because if if it's.

not and something else reoccurs or the. home doesn't get clean, unfortunately, my next step is more intrusive. >> Both parents agreed to drug tests on. scene. both came back positive for. cocaine, THC, alcohol. DCF determined. that the conditions were egregious. enough to remove the child that day and. place her with a family member in. Palmetto. But the story doesn't end. there because a warrant was signed for. both parents' arrest. And the body cam. captures the moment that police showed. up to take them into custody.

So, he's he's 16 because. my daughter is 16. And then my other. daughter is. Oh man, three of them I had put up for. adoption. >> Okay. >> So, it's hard for me to remember. I.

don't even remember their birthdays. anymore. >> Okay. >> So, she's probably close to. So, I want to say she's probably at. least like 14 now, maybe. Um, and so. would you agree that the day that DCF. came to the house that um things were in. kind of a bad state? Yes, cuz I was. going through stuff and throwing things. away. Like literally going through the. house. We have so much junk in there. So. that's what I was doing. Laundry and.

getting all my laundry together and. freaking trying to go through all that. stuff. >> Okay. And what about um when they Where. were you and Mr. BS at when they came? >> I was actually sitting outside cuz I. just finished a cigarette. >> Okay. So both of you were outside. >> He was smoking a cigarette and I was. smoking a cigarette because we don't. like smoking around her. >> Okay. So. when they were going through the house, they noted like some ashtrays with. cigarette butts and things like that. So. do you smoke in the house or do you.

smoke? >> She'll be outside when we do smoke. inside. Like for instance, if I'm, you. know, doing my laundry, I don't like. doing that outside. We have dirt, >> so I'll do that in my room, >> right? >> And then when I'm cooking dinner, I will. smoke in the kitchen. >> She tells the detective about her other. children, three of whom were put up for. adoption. The last time she went was a. while ago because I had lost um Medicaid. because I owed money for food stamps and. they won't let you do anything until you. pay it back. So I was $539 I did not.

have but needed to pay and I paid it in. like little by little cuz that's the. only way I could do it. >> Okay. >> And she goes to Centerplace Health. that's kind of on the like you know. where DCF is. It's like across the. street on the same side. >> in Sarasota. Okay. And it's all the way. in the back. >> Okay. All right. And are her um you said. it's been a while since she's been. >> Yes. >> Like how are we talking years? Are we. talking months or. >> It's been It's been about a year because.

I had to pay that crap off and I can't. afford insurance. I cannot afford. insurance. >> Okay. >> I have not found a place where I can. literally afford it except for through. the through the system. >> Does she have Medicaid now that you paid. that off? No, because I was already I. was already putting my paperwork in for. that. >> Okay. >> I had my tablet still up and running for. it. >> Okay. >> I was getting that done because when I. talked to my social worker, she said we. that's that's something we have to do. cuz I'm working with them. I'm doing. everything I can.

>> Okay. >> So, I have already started doing my. paperwork for that. And then I'll be. getting in touch I was getting going to. get in touch with Danzy with uh the. social worker as well so we can get her. a doctor's appointment and everything. like that. >> Okay. >> And I was almost done with the. paperwork. It's just monotony. >> Have you ever um I know you said your. other three other of your kids were put. up for adoption. Um did you ever think. about that because of your situation?

>> No, actually we were doing really good. >> Okay. >> We were doing great. Would you agree. that um. wasn't um she was pretty dirty and. unkempt? >> Yes. And it was supposed to be bath day. >> Okay. And then. her diaper like super soiled and sagging. almost to the point where it was ripping. because of the weight. >> Yeah. And I didn't realize that she had. did that so quick. >> Okay.

Okay. So I want I want to believe like. everything you're telling me. >> Oh no, you got to do your job. >> Right. And um I mean with all respect. that I can give you under these. circumstances is everything that I have. said to you and to Mr. [clears throat]. BS um about the dirtiness of the house. about the shape. about. everything in general. Um there's you. were going to do it all that day. like. you were going to do that day. You were.

going to clean that day. You were. applying for Medicaid that day. >> And you want us to believe that you were. doing every one of those things that. very day that DCF came out. >> I was trying everything I can to get. everything done because I had literally. just ripped ripped apart the house. That. was bath day. Hair day. >> How often is it bath day? >> Every other day. >> Every other day. Okay. And you see you. see her diaper there. It's pretty sad. Did she have any like mobility issues.

with like. >> only No. No. >> Did she have any rashes in her area that. you. >> She did from what I heard. Yes, she did. >> But did you notice them before? >> Huh? Only Only this one time. Okay. >> Usually she doesn't have a rash. >> Okay. What do you keep up on that? >> Probably freaking sitting in it for a. while and then not letting me change. her. >> Okay. Who doesn't change her? That's the reason why I. was I'm getting rid I was getting rid of. that. That's the reason why that dresser. is the way it is, too. All that was. coming out. So when is the last time. that you has seen. >> the last time she she was here two two.

years ago. >> Okay. When when she was asked about um. she didn't remember the last time she. saw her. She said when she comes to. visit she never sees. inside. She said she's never seen she's. not seen. >> being coached because she comes in the. house every time. >> Okay. She literally comes inside every single. time that she comes over. >> Even neighbors and family members um.

weren't aware. >> I don't know how. >> Like that's what I'm wondering. >> I don't [clears throat] know how that. is. People, they say they've been to. your house and they didn't even know you. had a 5-year-old in there or a four or. three year old. >> Again, I don't know how that is. She's. loud. >> Yeah, >> you could see her. >> But as far as the house and the. condition. of her room, would you agree that none. of that is fit for her? None of that.

Has she been diagnosed with that? some. >> every one of of my fiance baby is a. autistic. >> Okay. >> That I know of.

see. They they really didn't know that. she was there was even a child there. But. obviously, it was good an urgent type. situation. You agree that she. this is not appropriate for a child. That's why I cleaned everything up just. like they. >> done. day. You were doing all three of those. things. >> before they showed up. We was going to. go get her her uh physical cuz she had. already got her shots. We're going to get a physical, but they. showed up. and now I'm down here. >> No, I don't think so. >> Thank goodness. >> Thank you. >> Um, you said that.

where you guys took her to get those. >> around the corner though. >> at the health department here. Okay. I think that's where she went cuz that's. where we went. >> Okay. >> Well, I'm going to let them take you on. across the street. In the end, this child was. removed that same day. The arrest.

warrant affidavit includes details that. were never captured on camera. The. police report indicates that numerous. Crimestoppper tips came in about BS and. Kate selling drugs for 16 hours a day. Four Crimes Stoppers tips were called in. between February and September of 2024. They reference bowls and Kate selling. drugs, drinking, abusing animals, locking the child in a room, treating. her like a dog, the child never seeing a. doctor, being unable to talk. This child. was taken to the child protection.

center. APRN Ashley Dunire determined. medical neglect. She found a diffuse. rash, impacted ears, unidentifiable. material removed from her rectum. Kate's. 14-year-old daughter told investigators. that she visits her mother once a month, but hadn't seen her sister in over a. year. She stays outside or is in the. living room. All other doors are shut. She never asks. She's never seen her. sister's room. Now, following this. investigation, both parents ended up. pleading no contest to child neglect.

Kate's was sentenced to four months in. jail and two years probation. BS was. sentenced to 18 months in state prison, two years probation. Both are prohibited. from unsupervised contact with children. Contact with their daughter is now. governed by DCF. That's all we have for. you right now here on Sidebar.
