Hayden Panettiere Cause of Death: Shocking New Report!

What may have killed actress Hayden. Panitierre? Well, reportedly a single. pill, oxycodone. Law enforcement sources. who spoke to TMZ believe that that was. laced with fentanyl. Her boyfriend has. met with investigators. We don't know. what he said. And just this weekend, he. was handcuffed outside a bar shouting. about her death. The toxicology report. is pending, but the questions are still. piling up. And what we're going to do. right now is break down everything we.

can. Welcome to Sidebar presented by Law. and Crime. I'm Jesse Weber. We have a major update in the. investigation into the death of Hayden. Panitier because this is brand new. information just came out earlier today. TMZ is reporting, according to multiple. law enforcement sources with apparently. direct knowledge of this case, that. there is now a working theory on what. killed the young actress. And it is. allegedly one pill, one single pill that.

sources believe was oxycodone laced with. fentanyl. But that is not the end of it. Sources are also telling the outlet that. the actress apparently had a longtime. dealer out in Los Angeles that she took. drugs that she purchased from this said. dealer on the flight from Los Angeles to. South Carolina on August 15th, 2026. So, one day before she was found. unresponsive and in cardiac arrest. inside of an apartment in Greenville,

South Carolina. Now, the DEA is. reportedly trying to trace that. suspected fatal pill back to the person. who reportedly sold it to her. And just. to be clear, this is just a theory. This. is not an official release cause of. death determination. The toxicology. findings haven't been publicly released. yet. But as far as the investigation. goes, we are learning per sources who. spoke to ABC News that this is now a. crosscountry investigation. And here's. even more. By the way, Hayden's. boyfriend, Brian Hickerson, he has.

already reportedly met with the DEA. We. don't know yet what he told them. And. just over this weekend, in the last 48. hours, there was a separate incident. that allegedly broke out involving. Hickerson, who according to TMZ was. handcuffed by police outside of a South. Carolina bar. He was detained and he was later. released, but his brother was arrested.

and his brother and him were reportedly. at the scene where Hayden was found. unresponsive. Remember, and Brian was. apparently shouting something about. Hayden's death. Zack Hickerson actually. has since spoken out, appearing to. express frustration at what all the talk. about this case has been doing to him. and his brother. We're going to get to. more of that in just a bit, but here's a. quick reset. Here's where we're at. So, Hayden Panitier was found unresponsive. and in cardiac arrest on Sunday, August. 16th. This was at an apartment that she. was staying at temporarily in.

Greenville, South Carolina. According to. police, a 911 call came in that. afternoon. EMS arrived, initiated. advanced cardiac life support, but. Hayden couldn't be saved. She was. pronounced dead at the scene. And here's. a portion of that dispatch audio. KV1. engine to respond for cardiac arrest. That was just about a month ago to the. day. And since then, her official cause. and manner of death have still not yet. been determined or at least publicly. released. Officials have been awaiting. toxicology, which we're told could take. up to 12 weeks. What we do know is that. the autopsy was performed on August 17th. and the coroner reportedly found no.

visible signs of trauma or injuries. Now, we have a request out to the. Greenville County Coroner's Office in. South Carolina for the complete autopsy. report. When we have those findings, we're going to be sure to update you. here on Sidebar on all those details. And a note on that timeline here. So, just three days before Hayden died on. August 13th, Brian Hickerson was the. subject of a hearing in a Los Angeles. courtroom over his petition to expune. his domestic violence convictions. Now, prosecutors opposed that petition and.

according to the arguments made in. court, they pointed to a recent. interview in which they claimed that. Hickerson appeared quote quite high and. what appears to be a stimulant, that he. was very clearly not sober. The judge. denied Hickerson's request, but again, that hearing happened just 3 days before. Hayden was found unresponsive and died. in South Carolina. We did a whole. sidebar episode on Brian Hickerson, his. relationship with Han Panitierre, what. his criminal history looked like, but we. also obtained the police report just a.

few days ago. And this kind of fills in. some more details about this case. because it confirms an officer arrived. to assist EMS notes that the female. Hayden Penetier did not seem to have any. obvious physical reasons to be. unresponsive. An officer observed Zack. Hickerson, Brian's brother, to be very. emotional while first responders tried. to revive Hayden. That Brian Hickerson. did not become emotional until EMS. declared her officially deceased. Even. medications that Hayden was currently.

taking were shown to officers, though. we're kind of unsure exactly what those. medications were. A lot of this report. is redacted. But there are a couple. standout things here that we're going to. dive into in just a minute with my guest. because there is a lot of uncertainty as. to what went on here. All right, real. quick. So, let's. start with this alleged working theory. that's now out there according to TMZ. where sources are saying there was this. one pill, right? Oxy lace with fentanyl. And as somebody who has worked cases. like this, just walk us through what. this could mean if true, you know, how. would a single pill potentially become.

fatal and how would they know this? Well, obviously the autopsy, the the. forensic uh excuse me, the medical. examiners, you know, unfortunately in. today's world have an, you know, a vast. expertise in knowing different narcotics. and different drugs. >> And Daniel, just to interrupt you for. this is not even the coroner, right? This is reported by TMZ, right? So, this. is not even we don't even have the. official results, >> right? Exactly. So, but they'll be, you. know, they'll be able to determine for.

medical examiners and they'll be looking. at it and what the cause of death are. because we have beings in the in the. last 1015 years the number of fentanyl. overdoses is just skyrocketed. You know, unfortunately what we are facing here in. not only this country but this world of. of fentanyl laced narcotics. Um, so. they're going to be looking at that and. if this this is, you know, these stories. are allegedly uh bring true that it was.

a single dose of fentanyl. It doesn't. matter if it was a single or there was a. whole bottle of them. You know, clearly. we see if this was a single dose, it. doesn't it wouldn't lead to the, you. know, the pres the preposition, you. know, that she was trying to commit. suicide, >> right? uh if it was a single oxy pill, you know, you're going to be looking at. they're, you know, law enforcement will. be looking at the source is where it. came from. Um. >> can I ask you a juvenile question? Absolutely. Why would that why would it.

be laced? Why would you have a pill. potentially laced with fentanyl? >> I was just having this conversation be. it's to because if you look at it from a. drug dealer's perspective, you don't. want to lose your supplier your supply. line. So you you don't want to kill your. buyers. >> Yeah. >> But. the the the high that it produces, you know, when it's some people can take. it, some people can't take it. Um the.

people that can't take it, they die. But. here's the crazy part is that even if. they kill off 50% of their of their. buyers, there's more people that are. lining up right behind it. So they're. not going to lose, you know, as many buyers. Hey, if one. dies, it dies. There's somebody else is. gonna buy it because the drug trade is. just so huge and the the the addiction, >> you know, the not only to the oxycodone, you know, if she was.

>> uh if she was addicted to uh Oxy or if. she was using it, it could listen, if. she was taking one Oxy, she could have. had back pain. She could have had knee. surgery. We don't know about that. So, we don't know that she was addicted to. Oxy, you know, because there's plenty of. people who have, you know, knee surgery. up here in Montana because of blown out. ACL and their do their their their. doctors, you know, prescribe them. oxycodone to deal with the pain. So, it. could have been a completely legitimate, but your local is not going to put.

fentanyl in your oxy. >> So, this raises another question I had. Is it possible was accidental. contamination? Is that a real thing? No, I don't think that there there's I. think there's the not pharmaceutical. business, but I would think that's. almost impossible for there to be an. accident. Clearly, if there was fentanyl. in the Oxy, it was laced and she. probably purchased it from a supplier. that wasn't, you know, your your local. pharmacy. >> Sure. >> Now, that again, that doesn't say that.

she wasn't dealing with hip pain, back. pain, or something like that, and she. just bought it from somebody local. Um, I I go back to the Matthew Perry. overdose. Yes, Matthew Perry overdose. Uh, and I believe that was um K I forget. the name of the drug, but he was getting. it from his own ketamine. Thank you. He. was getting it from his own supplier. So, somebody was helping him deal with. it with ketamine and he had his own guy, his guy. >> So, again, he wasn't, you know, getting.

it from legitimate sources. she she. gonna but to put fentanyl in the oxy is. just to add to the high to the addiction. and then that person becomes addicted. and just wants to get back to it. Let me. just ask you and I again I don't know. too much about this so I was curious if. if if investigators are working on that. theory do they say there's only a. limited amount of people that could do. this there's you need certain certain. technology you see need certain products. you need certain uh tools to make this.

happen um not everybody would have. access to this does it limit the the. potential chain here in a way. >> no because Listen, fentanyl has I think. is becoming such a part of, you know, narcotics drug trade that everyone is. doing it. You know, you've got from your. Mexican cartels to Colombia to. Venezuela, they're all participating. But from my understanding is fentanyl. is, you know, the source of it comes.

from China. So, it has to be a supply. line from China. So, it it has to be. combined. This isn't something that, you. know, your your your corner, you know, drug dealer, somebody who's locally. would would just, you know, let me go. buy a bottle of fentanyl and pour it in. here into these pills. These have to be. pressed. These have to be put together. So, there's a process to this. I mean, this isn't like, you know, buying a bag. of of marijuana or cocaine or something. like that that's been cut with talum. powder. >> So, there is a supply line. And there is.

a process to this for pills with Oxy. which are laced with fentanyl. There. have been plenty of tragic stories. >> Sure. >> Where um there there's a black market. for narcotic pills out there. And I know. plenty of tragic stories where there are. 16, 17 year old children who their. parents are finding dead in their. bedroom because they purchased Oxy or. you know for to dealing with sports and.

they were athletes and they were just. dealing with pain and they couldn't get. it over the counter. So they were buying. it on the internet on the dark web or in. these nefarious markets that are not. good and they were laced with fentanyl. and they were their parents were finding. them dead. So unfortunately, like I. said, even on black market, on the dark. web, you can find these. It can be. found. >> It's horrible. It's horrible. And just. to be clear about something, u when we. when we're careful with this sourcing. here, you know, this is what law. enforcement sources reportedly told TMZ.

As I said, this is not the coroner. Can. you just help us people understand the. gap between what investigators may. believe and what is officially. determined by the toxicology results by. the uh the autopsy in a way? I mean when. we say working theory before the toxic. toxicology comes back just if you can. explain to what that means. >> Absolutely. As as an investigator having. dealt with investigations like this for. me if you know if the sources if the. reports that are coming out by TMZ are.

saying the sources law enforcement. sources to me that leads and that if. they don't have the toxicology report. let's go with the assumption that they. don't have the report from the medical. examiners and they're just dealing with. what's what was provided to them. They're going to see what other pills. were there. They're going to have a a. bottle. They're going to have her phone. They're going to have communications. So, they'll be able to see evidence. around the physical body. They'll be. able to see phys, you know, evidence. from the phone because you can look at. the phone right away. You can look at. they'll be able to part of the.

investigation. You know, whether it's a. homicide, they're going to be able to. look track her her her progress, where. she was going, who her friends are, and. I'm sure they're going to be. interviewing people who were close to. her. uh you know maybe they have were. with her that day when she passed away. and they'll be able to give information. they'll be like well yeah she was taking. Oxy and then boom so I mean the pill. won't have like a label like the. pharmacy but you know that's you know. using what's available to them now the. medical examiner's report will confirm.

law enforcement findings so which they. but they will try to use that as a. confirmation I would be surprised to see. that that there isn't a medical. examiner's report already. So, with how. many how much time has been has passed. since her passing, I would be very very. surprised that there hasn't been a. medical examiner's report at this point. >> I mean, I was basically going to ask you. that. What do you think is happening. right now? What's happening behind the. scenes? Because ABC News is reporting.

that uh sources are telling them that. this investigation could resemble the. Matthew Perry case, the M. Miller case. you know, DEA pursued the street level. dealers supplied the doses. LA Times is. reporting the same thing. So, >> it kind of echoes it, but again, what do. you think we should be looking out for. next? What is happening in the. investigation? Who's involved? How does. it work? >> Well, I would say that this is. definitely being this is a homicide. investigation. Um, because it's it's. just, you know, wasn't an accidental.

overdose. uh it wasn't a suicide appar. They have to go under the assumption. unless it is even if it's blatantly you. know clear to certain people they're. always the investigators always deal. with the possibility that it is a. homicide and at this point based on you. know reports that are coming out it is a. homicide investigation uh because that. pill killed Hayden Penitentiier and then. they they have to find out who gave that.

pill to her. How did she obtain that. pill? Okay, she went to such and such a. person. And then they'll they'll go down. they'll go back down the line one bit at. a time or how did she obtain it? Where. did she obtain it? And then they'll look. at the dealer and they'll talk to the. dealer and they'll say, "Well, listen, you clearly are you just the person that. provided it to her, but where did you. get it?" And then they just keep walking. back up the tree. guaranteed you that, you know, when she passed away and that. hit the news, everybody along that line. all the way up started shutting down and.

erasing information because obviously. this will gain a lot of attention, but. they they you can't completely erase all. the information. They're not going to be. able to they're they will be found. Um, and then my my sus, you know, my. suspicion would be like Matthew Perry, like Michael Jackson, like all the. other, you know, and Prince and all the, you know, accidental overdoses, they. will, you know, there will be people. that were going to they're going to have. to, you know, pay the price. You know,

>> I want to go I want to go back to this. other incident that happened at the same. time because we're talking about two. separate things, right? We're talking. about this reporting from TMZ and then. we're also talking about this bar. incident that happened over the weekend. So, I just want to play for our viewers. just this is another look at what. happened here. >> So, again, this was at a WildWing cafe. in Greenville. Police claimed that Brian. was intoxicated, yelling profanities.

Witnesses claim he threw a bar stool. He. was handcuffed. He was detained, released without being charged. His. brother Zach was arrested for disorderly. conduct. There's also this video. circulating on social media that appears. to show Brian sitting handcuffed on a. curb that he can be reportedly heard. saying GPD leaked it when my girlfriend. died. Now, we should be clear. He could. be referencing Greenville PD. We just. don't know that for sure. We don't know. exactly what he meant by that. We don't. know what he's referring to, but that's. just what a video seems to show him.

saying. But here's what I want your read. on, Daniel. What do you make of that. statement? I mean, that's a big. statement to purportedly make at that. time. >> I look at it this way is until. everyone's a suspect in my investigation. until they're definitively not. So, but. you can't you can't say somebody is, you. know, probably the person who's. involved. And again, you know, the. investigation is still ongoing. But as. an investigator, I'm going to make sure. that everybody is um investigated. Uh.

including those are who are closest to. uh the victim, making sure that. boyfriends, ex-boyfriends, ex-girlfriends, girlfriend, all of them. are under the under the window. um and. you know things that happen within the. days afterwards may indicate more you. know involvement or not involvement. whether you know GPD released I again. you know that's it's difficult from our. position because we don't have the.

entire story to know exactly why what. where who what so you know obviously his. his activity his actions that night are. very very suspicious uh and very you. know troublesome especially based upon. his previous history um his alleged you. know involvements in in their. relationship and whether it was turmoil. or again I am not you know in in the TMZ. area. >> so but that all leads to who is you know.

the person who most likely facilitated. this so you know let's say. hypothetically you have a. >> just to be clear just to be clear and he. hasn't been accused of being a suspect. He hasn't been charged with anything, but apparently he was there and and. people are looking at his past. People. are looking at what he's been up to. since Hayden Penitent's body was found. So, yeah, yeah, he hasn't been. implicated or anything.

>> They should be looking into him as they. should be looking into every other. person connected to Hayden that is was. connected to her, not just him. Because. walking into this investigation and. saying, "Okay, he's our suspect. He's. our main suspect." And not to look at. the entire field is very poor. investigation. You're sus you're as an. investigator, you be like, "Okay, a lot of red flags around him, but let's. look at everything." Now, the fact that. he was there with her if he facilitated.

the conversation of saying, "Hey, let's. go meet a certain person." So, if I have. a victim and her ex-boyfriend or. ex-husband or whatever the situation may. be said, hey, let's go see maybe we can. start taking some uh, you know, some. narcotics that, you know, it was, you. know, that person who facilitated the. obtaining of the that person could be. charged that could be, you know, that. needs to be considered because, you. know, it it's the but for conversation.

It's called the but for conversation. where we had in the FBI, you know, it. never would have happened but for. So. the FBI when we do undercover. operations, we can't be, let's say we. have a terrorism investigation or a drug. conversation or drug investigation, we. can't be the ones who supply the bomb. We can't be the ones who say, "Hey, why. don't we go rob that bank?" And then. that person goes, "Oh, you know what? I. think we should go rob that bank.". Because it's the but for conversation. if it wasn't for the FBI but for. suggesting and saying, "Hey, let's go.

bomb this." You can't charge it. So, he. has to have brought it to the table. So, again, the investigation needs to be. looking at everything in the in the in. the room, including him, >> right? >> Obviously, these these activities show a. pattern that maybe he's upset, maybe he. feels guilty, maybe he knows he's under. the microscope. Those are all good. questions. I also do want to know like. you have a celebrity there is there are. celebrity deaths where information does.

get leaked in a really improper way. I. mean I think about Kobe Bryant so I. don't know if he's telling I don't know. what these accusations are but something. I thought about and then I just want to. go to Zach for a second. So Zach his. brother spoke out uh after being. released and he didn't want to talk. about what happened in the bar but he. did have a lot to say about the reaction. that he and his brother have been. getting. So, let me read you what he. told TMZ. Quote, "It's just super. frustrating all that we've been through. and all the rumors that get started and. then people believe them and then they.

attack as a result of the rumors. That's. what bleeps me off." And he complained. about information being posted online, saying people quote fill in their own. holes and then attack others based on. what they assume happened. and he. wouldn't say what specifically he thinks. people are getting wrong, but he did say. quote, "I'll clarify eventually." And he. didn't answer when asked how Brian is. holding up. But, you know, that that. seemed to be a statement that to me, in. my opinion, indirectly may reference.

what happened at the bar and they have. been getting a lot of attention and a. lot of spotlight. Um, curious your. thoughts on it. >> He's not wrong. He's not wrong. in. today's microscopic world and the media. attention and uh he's not wrong that. everything is you know the media you. know wants to sensationalize things and. you know they want to see the latest the. greatest the rumors the TMZ and that you. know that side of the world and the. paparazzi he's not wrong so getting that.

you know information but they're feeding. you know society we want that. information you know as as an And it's. unfortunately. uh it's not about getting the most the. the accurate story out all the time. It's about getting a story out. Maybe. they're not going to lie, >> but hey, let's put this out there. Let's. put this out there. >> And so unfortunately, there are people. that are caught in, you know, in in the.

crossfire. >> Let me read you a little from this. police report while I have you because I. think it's interesting. I want to read a. bit of this to you, get your uh response. on it. So, for one, the report. references CCTV CCTV footage, and the. courtesy officer at the complex told the. responding officer that there was video. showing all three individuals. So, Hayden, Brian, Zach, coming and going. According to the report, that footage. was going to be uploaded as part of a.

supplemental report. Now, Daniel, back. to you. What are investigators looking. at in footage like that? >> They're going to look at all activity, the timeline, you know, when people were. arriving, when people were passing, you. know, the it'll it'll all go from the. time the estimated time of death by the. corner and then going backwards. They. want to build a full map and then. they'll go back way beyond the the. cameras. They're going to go look at the.

phones and they're going to see where. where did the people travel in the hours. beforehand. So, they're going to it's. it's all about painting and building. that jigsaw puzzle. You know, we have a. thousand piece jigsaw puzzle that and. they need to find out where every piece. was. All right, this piece, this piece, and and and it's painting all of the. picture to understand how did we get to. this point? How did we get to her. turning up dead? Okay, what do we know? Well, we know we have pills next to the. body. We know that this individual was.

there. We need to talk to him. We need. to talk to that person. This person. talked to her an hour because we saw her. an hour before because we saw them on. CCT. Everything is a piece of that 1,00. piece jigsaw puzzle and putting it all. together as part of the investigation. Nothing can be left out because you know. even if there is something that shows. you know that one person you know you. have 999 pieces of the jigsaw puzzle say. that person did this. If there's one.

piece that says that person did not, the. investigators cannot take the other 999. pieces. >> because. the person is innocent. And second, it. would fall apart in court and then the. attorneys, the district attorneys, the. US attorney's office, they need to know. this. And that's all discoverable. information. And the defense, you know, will be able to say, "Hey, we're not. guilty." Even though there's 999 other. pieces that point right at my client, that one piece. So, it's imperative that.

the investigators find out every single. piece of evidence that's out there, digital, physical interviews to, you. know, to to build that 10,000 piece. jigsaw puzzle. >> And the CCTV footage, you know, arguably. doesn't lie. I know we live in a day of. AI, but, you know, it does provide at. least a concrete snapshot of her. movements at one specific period of. time. Now, the report indicates the. responding officer's body camera was. recording when Brian Hickerson was. interviewed at the scene. So, there's.

apparently an on camera record of that. interview. Now, we don't know what. exactly Brian said in that moment in. that interview because that portion of. the publicly available report is. redacted and that specific footage. hasn't been released. But that's. significant, right, Daniel? I mean, how. significant is that recorded interview. uh for purposes of this investigation. and wherever it goes? >> Well, it depends. Uh if it's a recorded. body cam interview that was done at the.

scene, he may not have been mirandized. He may not have been mirandized. He. wasn't in custody. So, you have to. understand is, you know, people think in. the movies and TV, oh, you have to. mirandize me. No. statements that are. made at the scene can be submitted. It. doesn't mean they will be submitted. Um. that's why it's important, you know, when somebody's arrested or taken into, you know, detained in custody. Well, you. have to read me my rights. No, we do not. have to read you your rights when you're. arrested. You only have to be read your.

Miranda rights when you're questioned. So, it all depends on whether the. individual was being questioned or they. were just asking, "Hey, what's going on? What do you know?" There could be. information. So, it's part of the. ongoing investigation and making sure. that if you know the there's there could. have been statements made during these. these body cam or if it was in an. interrogation room, it's still part of. the investigation. It's an active. investigation. Um, so I am sure that. everybody's going to be filing for the. Freedom of Information Act to get, you.

know, this body cam video to see it, but. seeing that it is still an active, you. know, investigation, I'm sure it's being. delayed by by the police department and. holding off and saying, "Yes, we'll get. it to you. >> when it's part of discovery when it gets. turned over to the court as part of. their investigation, whether they found. definitive evidence that individual A. was, you know, part of the, you you. know, the team or the group of people. that facilitated her having the pill, that individual needs to be indicted.

And here is the vis, you know, the the. video evidence showing that's part of. discovery. And that that's turned over. to court, then that can be turned over. to the world. >> Got it. One more part about this, uh, and this is important. The report says a. search warrant was executed at the. apartment. Talk to me about how that. works. Talk to me about what they're. looking for because we don't know. exactly what they're looking for, but. the fact that they've executed a search. warrant. Um, what does that tell you. about again what they're looking for and. how they're treating this early on?

>> They're treating it correctly. I mean, they're being actually extremely. methodical and making sure that all. physical evidence, both not just. physical evidence, but digital evidence. that may support theories as part of the. investigation of building 10,00 piece. jigsaw puzzle is collected correctly and. legally, you know, authorized by a judge. by the court. Now, the fact that there's. a a young woman who's found dead in this. apartment, that doesn't give the police.

right to search the entire apartment. just because she's dead. When police. enter the scene, they can do a cursorary. search, a safety search, making sure. that there are no weapons nearby, where. they're going to be walking, but that. that's it. That's the extent of it. They. can't search drawers, they can't search. closets, they can't search phones or any. devices. They have to go to the court. and say, "Listen, we believe, you know, there was a a person who was found dead. here on in this apartment, and we. believe that there is other physical. evidence that may support us building.

that 1,000 piece jigsaw puzzle in that. house. There may be a computer that had. a conversation. There may be a phone in. that." So, these are all things that are. most likely listed in that search. warrant saying we need to collect that. evidence, you know, and we have probable. cause to believe. It doesn't mean there. definitely is. It's just that is one of. the steps is collecting other items that. are in the house. You know, bottles of. of of narcotics that could be stashed in. a closet in a box that were like from.

years ago to show a pattern and saying, "Listen, this individual that may be our. suspect was purchasing from this from. this drug dealer." Um, so this is all. part of the collection. And then they. will continue to they'll I'm sure they. seized his phones, uh, you know, her. phone, her computers, all of these other. things to build that 10,000 piece jigsaw. puzzle and they're doing it legally and. correctly, but they're going before the. judge so when it's collected into. evidence, they could say the proper. chain of custody. >> 100% 100%.
