'Glamorous' Trooper's Deadly DUI Case Takes Wild Turn

The only. thing is they're apparently met with. suspicious resistance from a manager who. claims he doesn't keep track of. customers. We [music] are breaking down.

earlier this year. It's a story that. involves a Washington state patrol. trooper, a deadly crash, and allegations. she was driving drunk. Trooper Sarah. Clayson was arrested last March after. police say she made a left turn and. crashed into 20-year-old motorcyclist. Jose Sanchez, who died at the hospital. after succumbing to his injuries. Officers on scene said that she showed. signs of impairment, that she refused. field sobriety tests, and a later blood. draw apparently showed her alcohol level.

was more than double the legal limit. She was eventually charged with. vehicular homicide. But the. investigation into exactly where she was. allegedly drinking that night and for. how long, that has continued. And now, newly released police body cam footage. is pulling back the curtain on that. investigation in a major way because it. shows detectives going to this bar where. Clayson was allegedly drinking and. encountering what they describe as. suspicious resistance and missing. records. >> Is this not my interest?

Do you understand? >> You We're here on a search warrant. I'll. sit by the door. >> Okay. So, this all starts on the evening. of March 1st, 2025 in Richland, Washington. As I mentioned, 20-year-old. man named Jose Sanchez is at home. According to Apple Valley News, he had. recently graduated high school. He was. working at a food processing company. He.

had a passion for motorcycles. And. around 6:00 p.m. as it was getting dark, Jose asks his stepfather for permission. to take the bike for a ride around the. neighborhood. He gets the okay, he heads. out. Now, at roughly the same time, you. have 35-year-old Sarah Clayson. Again, this Washington State Patrol trooper and. public information officer with the. agency for 13 years. She's off duty. According to what she later tells. police, she was out picking up a. Domino's pizza and was heading home to. her family. Now, reporting indicates. that her route takes her westbound on.

State Route 240. She apparently. approaches the intersection with Village. Parkway, the turn to her neighborhood. She gets into the left turn lane, and. according to the police reconstruction, Jose is traveling eastbound on SR240, approaching that same intersection. Clayson allegedly begins her left turn. onto Village Parkway and Jose, apparently seeing her vehicle turning. into his path, slams on his brakes. And. police would later find a skid mark from.

seemingly his motorcycle tires veering. to the right in a desperate attempt to. avoid the collision. But it wasn't. enough. The front of Clayson's SUV. struck Jose's motorcycle, and the impact. was violent. The motorcycle became. wedged underneath the front passenger. side of her vehicle and was dragged. Jose was thrown into the roadway. Now, Clayson called 911. And in that call. that was obtained by law and crime, she. sounds calm, even arguably confused. about the severity of what's going on.

>> Are you injured at all? >> No. >> Okay. And it said you were in IKEA. Is that. right? >> Yes. >> Okay. injured. Okay. Did you hit a a motorcycle? >> Yeah, we are. >> Okay. Do you see if the person's injured. or breathing? >> Uh yeah, I think everybody's okay. Uh. let me let me get out and check. Yeah, we have no pulse on a I believe a.

pedestrian. >> Uh I I can Yes, I'm a first responder. >> You are a first responder. Yes, ma'am. Uh, >> if you want to start CPR, we can. definitely get that going. Um, >> okay. I want to start uh CPR. >> Okay. >> So, first responders, they arrived to. find Clayson performing CPR on Jose and. a large pool of blood on the highway. The medics, they take over. They rush.

him to the hospital, but his injuries. were catastrophic. According to the. police report, he suffered severe head. trauma, internal injuries, a likely. femoral artery bleed, and he was. pronounced dead. Now, here's the thing. Because the suspected driver who we're. talking about here was an offduty state. trooper, Washington State Patrol, handed. the investigation over to Richland. police so there wouldn't be a conflict. The lead investigator here, Officer. Steve Hyde, noted that there were signs. of potential impairment here and asked. Clayson to perform field sobriety tests, but she allegedly refused. And after a.

lengthy onseen investigation, Officer. Hyde informed her she was under arrest. >> All right, so like I said, we were. really trying to rule alcohol out. I I'm. not convinced that alcohol wasn't a. factor. So, right now, you are under. arrest. Okay. Okay. >> Let's go ahead and put your hand behind. and get back. [snorts]. >> So, we will be um search warrant for. blood. Okay. That way, there will be no questions.

>> Now, as she's being placed into the. patrol car, Clayson seems to reconsider. her refusal to take a test. Well, this. this so we're trying to treat this like. any other incident [snorts] and. typically once the opportunity kind of. comes and that you you know you say you. don't want to do it as voluntary and. then if you want to do it um [snorts]. >> well I do a voluntary breath test if you. but I just didn't want to do the fields. >> Okay. So you wanted to submit to.

[sighs and gasps] I think with this the. the significance of this I think it's. probably we're going to probably do a. search warrant. Okay, >> that's fine. >> All right. I appreciate your. cooperation. >> No worries. Of course. >> And it was that investigation that led. to a blood draw. And what was the. result? Sarah Clayson's blood alcohol. content was.175%. That is more than double the legal. limit. Now, she was charged with. vehicular homicide. She's pleaded not. guilty. But for prosecutors, there was. still a major piece of the puzzle that. was missing because to fully build their.

case, they needed to know, okay, where. did she drink that night? And how long. was she drinking for? That question led. detectives to a local bar. It's called. the Moon Palace. And the newly released. body cam footage from their visit shows. the search for answers seemingly. immediately hitting a wall. >> Is best not my interest. >> I I feel like he is interfering with our. investigation and I think he needs to. leave. >> Sir, you need to leave. Sir, you need to. leave. >> I'm just going to sit right here.

We're here on a search warrant by the. door. >> Let me walk you through this body cam. footage step by step, okay? Because it. shows detectives from the Richland. Police Department arriving at the Moon. Palace restaurant and Bar, and they're. trying to piece together Sarah Clayson's. timeline on the night of the crash. So, it begins with detectives inside the. establishment presenting the manager. with a search warrant. And what they're. doing is they're asking for his. cooperation to close the property. temporarily so that they can conduct.

their search, right? But you know, from. the very first moments, this manager. appears hesitant, appears on guard. He. immediately calls his attorney, begins. clearing customers out of the bar, and. as he's trying to reach his lawyer, detectives press him with just basic. questions. They ask about Sarah. Clayson's presence. Manager seems to. downplay it, saying she was there, quote, a long time ago. And when they. ask which employees were working that. specific night, March 1st, he seemingly. refuses to give that information.

>> [laughter]. [laughter]. >> How's it going? Yeah. >> So, I was here yesterday. Um, we just. got some questions. >> Sure. Can we talk out here? >> Yeah, we can do that. >> So, we're just investigating a collision. that happened on Saturday. [snorts]. >> Um, do you recognize these two people? We.

think they may have been here. >> I I they've been here a long time ago. >> A long time ago? >> Yeah. >> Okay. Were you working on Saturday? >> I was not working on Saturday. >> Okay. Who was working on Saturday? >> Uh one of the girls. >> Okay. Who who was the other girls that. were working on Saturday? >> Uh there's just a couple other. employees. >> Okay. >> So, >> what what are the names? >> I I you know, I I don't really want to. answer anything cuz I don't know what. it's going to turn into. >> All right. So, that's kind of what I. figured. So, I did apply for and was. granted the search warrant for this. location. Okay, >> that's why we didn't go over this.

yesterday. Um, we were hoping to do this. with your cooperation, but we can do. this either way. So, um, >> do I need an attorney then? Or. >> you can get an attorney right now. We. have a search warrant. Here you go. We. are going to, um, we're going to search. and seize res u the location for. receipts, financial documents, badger. ledger entries, or any similar. documentations. I will leave you with a. copy of this warrant. >> Can you let me ask my attorney first? Would that be okay? No, >> you don't have the choice, sir. So, what. we're going to need you to do, um, unfortunately, everyone's going to have. to leave. We're going to we're going to.

have to close you down until we're done. with this. >> Okay. >> So, if you wouldn't mind doing that and. then. >> Okay. I do advise you though, I will. advise you that if you have had too much. to drink, please do not drive. There's. other officers in the area.

time. >> So we believe it or not we do want to. make this as painless as possible for. you. So we are going to need those. documents. Uh either we can look through all of the. location. We do have a like I said we do. have a search. >> warrant documents like my checkbook. >> sales records for Saturday. >> Yep. >> Uh they're right. >> receipts financial documents ledger and. yes you checkbook.

to kick everybody out. So, >> now after the bar is cleared, the search. continues and the manager provides. officers with the receipts that he has. on hand. But as detectives look through. them, they notice something strange. For. a Saturday night, the number of receipts. seems incredibly low. The volume doesn't. appear to match what you would expect. for a busy bar. So, it's at this point. the manager makes a sweeping statement. He tells detectives, "The Moon Palace. simply doesn't keep records of every. sale or every customer. >> Receipts I keep right here.".

>> Okay. >> So, >> okay, we can look through those. It's. fine. >> Okay. Well, >> we're only we're only going to take what. the search warrant entitles us to. We're. not going to go go through everything. for years and years back. Okay, >> just so you know, you got nothing to be. nervous about. >> I know. >> We're just here for record. That's it. >> You're not in trouble.

>> [groaning]. >> So, I see two receipts in here from the. first. Carly Sue on one. >> Okay. Here's the checkbook. >> So, are these all the receipts? >> Yeah, that's all the receipts. So on the. first you only had two two visitors.

>> Uh the first Yeah. Some most times they. pay cash. >> So you only. >> these are kind of like tabs I run until. they. >> So you don't use these for cash. >> Well, I do use them as cash. They pay at. the end of the night when they're done. >> So all I'm seeing in here, unless you. have it out of order, I'm only seeing. two receipts. >> That's whatever the. >> first. So my my question to you, sir, is. I only see two receipts here for the. first. Are you saying that you only have. two customers? >> No, I didn't say that. I I said.

>> This is probably going to be more. comprehensive than we originally. thought. We're going to have to to go. through. It sounds like you're maybe. destroying records. >> I haven't destroyed anything. Everything's there. >> Okay. I'm just telling you how it's. perceived. >> I know. I understand. Again, like that. guy over there paid for three drinks, which I still owe him two more drinks. >> How do you keep uh track cars inventory. and tours and all that kind of stuff? >> We we just go by whatever. We never. have. What about taxes? How do how do. you keep record of your income for for. tax purposes? >> Right here. >> Okay. So, this is everything. >> That's my dailies for that month.

>> Okay. >> All right. >> That's for the month of March right. there. >> You have one piece of paper. >> I have those three. Today's fourth day. I'm I'm just looking at the first. >> As officers are sorting through this. small stack of receipts, this is when. they make a key discovery. There are. only two receipts from the entire night.

of March 1st. So, the night that Sarah. Clayson was allegedly there drinking. Now, a detective directly asks the. manager if this is truly everything he. has from that night. The manager appears. to say yes. That answer doesn't add up. for police because they begin a more. thorough search of the property, looking. for any other records or boxes or. storage areas. And as this search. unfolds, the manager appears to remain. close by, kind of watching. And his. continued presence, combined with his. earlier refusal to provide basic.

information like staff schedules, it. seems to start to frustrate the. investigators. So, they begin to suspect. that maybe he's not just being. uncooperative. Is he allegedly. obstructing their investigation in some. way? I'll tell you what, the tension in. the room, it escalates and it leads one. detective to a firm conclusion. >> Okay. So, what other documentation can. you provide to me? Or is this all that. you have? >> That's okay. >> What I got? >> Okay. We will probably have to search. the premises then because I I feel like. this is lacking. >> Um. >> uh like I said, people pay for drink. I.

mean, that's all it is. >> So, you don't have receipts? You don't. give people receipts? >> I don't give people receipts at all. >> So, you don't use this? >> I do use that. That's why I ring up. I. have that roll. will have to look for it. for that day. But that's. >> Yeah. Yeah. Either you can look for it. or we can look for it. I told you. >> And the search of the property reveals a. crucial contradiction because officers. they seem to find boxes of receipts from. other dates, other months, proving the. bar does in fact keep sales records. And. this makes the lack of receipts from. March 1st even more suspicious. with. boxes of records from other nights. Why. are there only seemingly two slips from. the night of the crash? So, what. happens? Well, on camera, the detectives. discuss the possibility that the. receipts from that night were maybe. intentionally destroyed or hidden. They.

talk about the need to amend their. search warrant on the spot to legally. seize the receipts that they found, which could serve as evidence of the. bar's normal recordkeeping practices. >> Anything else? Well, >> there's three pieces of paper for an. entire day. I'm thinking maybe we uh maybe amend. amend this reform. >> Oh, you want me to do that right now? >> While we're here, >> take all these cuz. >> Well, you do you want me to amend it.

right now? >> Well, for the amendment because. that's why. >> Oh, I know. I know. Um there is um there. is an upper level I haven't gone up. there yet, but I've just like the. documents are somewhere. I think either. his attorney tipped him off that this is. where they were and he's covering his. tracks. Um.

or me coming yesterday. He knows. >> They seem to be. >> Oh, sure. Oh, okay. >> Um I mean, I can go amend it real quick. I don't think I it can be done over a. phone call though. Um we're. seeing other documentation with their.

name on it.". >> Okay. >> And he's obviously covering up. >> Okay. >> We just want to take it all. >> Okay. So, all What kind of time period. are we talking? All. >> Mhm. Okay. He knows who they are. >> Oh, yeah. He does. >> So, >> so he's so he's like. he he's destroyed evidence.

>> He knows who they are. >> Well, but not only that, but he has. destroyed evidence. >> Either that. >> No, he there's no way. If every time. they come, there is a receipt and. there's no receipt. This time there's. two transactions. He I mean I we can go. back and look and see how many people. are coming and going from this location. and if it's more than two people then. he's he's destroying evidence. >> So that's just [clears throat] take it. all. >> Okay. I I'd like to um let me go look. I mean it's probably in the garbage. You. know, it could have been in the garbage. two days ago at this point. Let me go. look upstairs just to see if there's. some sort of stash of something. upstairs. just at least check that box. and then I can I can make that phone. call to a spirit court judge. >> And then this is interesting. Another. employee arrives at the Moon Palace and. detectives pull this employee aside and. she provides a narrative that arguably. directly conflicts with the manager's. version because this employee tells.

police that at the Moon Palace, every. single drink is documented on a ticket. The only exception, she says, is if a. customer pays in cash immediately right. at the bar. And she adds that Sarah. Clayson and her group, they were. regulars. And that absolutely there. should be documentation of their orders. from that night. >> Do you recognize these two people? >> Trent and Sarah. >> Trent and Sarah. Okay. And how do you. know them? >> Because they come here. >> They come here. Okay. Do they ever cause. any problems or anything or. >> they don't overdrink? >> They don't overdrink. So. >> So armed with the conflicting statements. in the boxes of older receipts, a. detective steps outside to call the. judge. He needs to amend the search. warrant in real time based on what. they've just discovered. And in this. call, he lays out his findings. Right. The manager claimed that there was no. detailed records that they exist. They. found boxes of other receipts. He.

expresses his belief that the receipts. from the specific night in question may. have been tampered with or destroyed. Take a look. >> Tell me what you need uh relative to. your amendment. >> Okay. Um would you like me to send the. warrant first? >> No. Go ahead. >> Okay. Um so in my warrant and my uh. declaration, it says seize if locating. the following items. What I have right. now is receipts, financial documents, ledger entries, and similar. documentation that were recorded and/or.

documented on 0301 2025 between 1506. hours to 1928 hours. When we came to. execute this search warrant, we found. that there were only um two um receipts. indicating that that was the only. transactions that took place on 0301. 2025. Um, in looking through the rest of. them, it it seems like a. disproportionate amount. And it is. likely, especially due to the.

high-profile nature of this case, that. those um those documents were um were. disposed of or destroyed. So, um, in. order to get a better glimpse on the. history, um, oh, and I also do want to. say that I did speak with a an employee. who works here, and she stated that. those are always, um, every drink that. it's ordered are always documented on a. green receipt unless it's paid in cash. the time. She was familiar with the. suspect and um, and her husband, and she.

said that those individuals will always. order drinks in groups and pay at the. end, so there should have been. documentation. I also have reviewed um. surveillance camera um footage in the. area and confirmed that those two. individuals were at this location. So, what I would like to have amended is the. date range. Instead of um the the 1st of. March, um I would like to start on the 1st of. December through um through the 1st of.

of March. So, here's what happens. After. further investigation, detectives came. to believe that the manager hadn't. intentionally destroyed or hidden. evidence, but he maintained his. position, still apparently refusing to. give any official statement to clarify. the contradictory accounts about the. bar's recordkeeping that night. And for. trooper Sarah Clayson, she is back in. court for a hearing on January 7th. We. will keep a very careful eye on this. because this is a tragedy. You think. about Jose's family, you think about. what they're going through. This is a. really, really difficult time in their.

lives and cannot be easy as all this. evidence is coming out and this is. moving forward towards what will [music]. probably be a difficult trial. That's. all we have for you right now here on.
