at Solid Rock Church out in Myrtle. Beach, South Carolina. And this is of. course he is of course the subject of. this recently released Netflix series, The Death of the Pastor's Wife. and it's. centered around the death of Micah. Miller back in 2024. We have been. following this story very closely since. it began unfolding two years ago. We. actually did a deep dive into the docue. series. We did it on an episode of. Sidebar back in August. It's up on Long. Crimes YouTube channel. You can check it.
all out right there if you want to see. more details. Now, we're going to get to. where things stand in a moment, but if. you are completely new to the story, here is a brief gist. Here's a brief. summary. A then teenage Micah Miller. apparently met JP Miller while attending. Solid Rock Church where at the time he. was a pastor and she kind of moved up on. the ranks as a worship leader. Eventually became JP's assistant family. nanny by the age of 18. You fast forward.
two years later, it came to light that a. then 20-year-old Micah, who was also. married, and 35year-old JP were. apparently having an affair. And this. sent shock waves through the church, ultimately seemingly led to both of them. to divorce their partners and then they. got together. That is also when JP's. alleged sexual coercion and control. started to take shape because according. to Micah's family and loved ones, for. example, she had never discussed having.
a breast augmentation before, but then. suddenly decided to have a procedure, a. surgery. According to what JP allegedly. told her family, she had a bad reaction. to this anesthesia, that Micah had some. kind of mental break, that she was. institutionalized, that she was. diagnosed with bipolar disorder. That's. that's actually from the documentary. Now, Micah's family claims that JP used. that apparent diagnosis as well as.
religious doctrine to allegedly exert. even more control over his new wife, who. he married just days after she was. apparently released from the hospital. Now, Micah allegedly told one of her. close friends that she and JP would have. sex multiple times a day. I think there. was a report of at least four times a. day. and if that she didn't agree, if. she didn't give in to his sexual wishes, he would allegedly punish her through. psychological torture. The documentary.
reportedly revealed allegations that JP. had forced Micah to take testosterone. injections, all in an effort to help her. keep up with his sex drive or his. apparent sex drive. The testosterone. apparently changed her voice, so it made. it difficult for her to lead worship. like she had in the past. But that is. just a portion of the abuse allegations. that were detailed by Micah throughout. the marriage. According to friends and. family in the docue series, there were. additional allegations mentioned in the.
series. infidelity, stalking, cyber. harassment, blackmail, threats of. violence, isolation from loved ones, withholding funds, controlling her. medication intake, psychiatric. treatment, even forced sexual activity. with strangers, all of which would later. be cited by her family in legal. proceedings. Now, Micah was found dead. on April 27th, 2024 at Lumber River. State Park out in North Carolina with a.
gunshot wound to the head. This was. ruled a suicide by the medical examiner. Authorities have never indicated that it. was anything but that. However, there. are those who believe Micah's inner. circle or family supporters who believe. that it was years of this alleged abuse. by JP Miller allegedly that ultimately. drove Micah to take her own life. And I. want you to keep in mind that Micah's. death took place just 2 days after JP.
was served with divorce papers. Now, it. is important to note John Paul Miller. has never been criminally charged with. causing Micah's death in any way. Okay? And he had an alibi. He wasn't anywhere. near there. But JP is currently facing. federal charges of cyberstalking and. making a false statement to police after. the FBI raided his home and seized. electronic devices. According to ABC4. News, his federal trial has been delayed.
from October 2026 to January 2027. This. is as JP's attorneys apparently. interview more witnesses, they're. gathering additional evidence. And I'm. going to break down a little bit later. what those charges specifically are. because I think they're relevant to what. we're talking about here today. What am. I talking about here today? This other. legal battle. This other battle going on. outside of federal court. This is in. probate court. This is involving Micah's. estate, which according to the post and. courier is around $9,700.
Now, before we get into that, just got. to make a quick note. You know, this is. a big story we've been following here on. Sidebar for quite some time. I mentioned. it before. As with a lot of the big. stories that we focus here on Sidebar, we just can't show you absolutely. everything in a given episode, which is. why we have created the case file. section on the Long Crime Plus app. So, we basically open up the evidence vault. on all these big cases so you can. inspect the raw body cam footage, the. 911 calls, the crime scene photos, the.
full trial tapes, all firsthand. Plus, you get adree streaming of all your. favorite law crime and court TV shows. And right now, we got a special offer. with my promo code Sidefall. You get. your first three months of Lawn Crime. Plus for just $2.99 a month. That is 50%. off the regular monthly price. Hope you. can check it out. I want to go back to. this. So, in May of 2024, so this is. just 6 days after Micah's death, her. sister Sierra Francis was appointed. special administrator of her estate.
This was done by the Horry County. Probate Court out in South Carolina. However, a week later, JP Miller filed a. petition seeking to become the fiduciary. of Micah's estate. As part of his. petition, he wrote, quote, "Basically, I. have lived seven years with a person who. had to take a pill every day or she. would threaten to kill me or someone. else. I did everything I could think to. do. I went to judges, doctors, lawyers, Micah's friends, Micah's family, Micah's. counselor, Micah's pastor, policemen,
church members, the retired nurse she. was staying with, etc." And I told. everyone that she needs her medicine and. that she will battle suicidal delusions. if she doesn't get it. And nobody. believed me. If Micah's family had. simply listened to me or listened to the. doctors or listened to all the things. Micah had told them in the past about. her mental illness and how I take care. of her, then she would be alive today. I. did everything a man can do to save. someone's life. And I didn't have anyone. willing to help. Now her family spends.
all their energy abusing me, my. children, my friends, and my church. through lies, accusations, harassment, defamation, slander, etc. knowing I'm. the only one who took care of Micah and. worked hard to keep her alive. To my m. to my knowledge, Micah had no estate. documents, will or trust. She had no. other heirs or beneficiaries as I am her. spouse and she had no children. There. are no other individuals ahead of me as. her husband in the interstate line to be. personal representative. I have been.
informed that her death was ruled a. suicide and that there are no ongoing. investigations by anyone in North. Carolina, South Carolina or federal. Thus, I ask this court under the law of. South Carolina to appoint me personal. representative of the estate so that all. creditors can be paid and I can honor. all of Micah's wishes. That's. interesting. That's important. Few. things. One, that's the different side. to this after everything that I. mentioned. That's JP Miller's side of. the narrative side of the story of what. happened. And you can kind of arguably.
get a glimpse of what I imagine. Maybe. his defense in a criminal case. There's. one thing to fight all the allegations. of what he's accused of doing, but is a. counterargument to, yeah, I I followed. her. I tracked her. I did all this for. her best interest because I was worried. about her because I was trying to. protect her. I wonder if that's. somewhere where they will go. But again, you're seeing two different sides. Now, I will make note that in the. documentary, Micah's family denied ever. withholding or encouraging Micah to stop.
taking her medication. And according to. a report from The Sun News, the family's. attorney, Regina Ward, who we've had on. this program numerous times, went as far. as to claim or seemingly claim that JP. allegedly forced her to take lithium, meaning forced Micah to take lithium, and that she was never actually. prescribed these kind of medications by. a doctor. Although JP reportedly shared. photos of these prescription bottles. with the outlet, including one seemingly. for lithium. Also, according to the Sun. News, Ward had said on July 15th, 2024,
quote, she was mentally healthy until. she got snared in his web. There's been. no evidence or incident or evaluations. or diagnosis of her having any mental. health problem until after she gets. involved with John Paul. You fast. forward to July of 2024 and Micah's. family apparently reaches a confidential. settlement with JP and by August he. becomes the estate's representative. I. will add a side note, okay, the Posting. Courier reports that part of that.
agreement also includes the family being. forbidden, procluded from filing a. wrongful death lawsuit against JP. Miller. However, that is not the end of. the estate battle because you fast. forward to May of 2025 and Micah's. mother, Angelita Salis, petitions the. probate court to remove JP as personal. representative of her daughter's estate. And according to court documents, she. later testified that that petition was. made because of the federal charges. along with allegations of sexual abuse.
Now, I also have to add this to put it. into context. The federal indictment. didn't come down until December of 2025. So, it's unclear when Micah's mother. testified following her petition. Okay, putting it into a time frame here. But. this week, what happened? We got our. hands on the probate judge's written. decision that was dated September 10th. of this year. It reads in part, quote, "The evidence established that the. family and special administrator were. aware of those matters before entering.
into the settlement that resulted in. respondent's appointment. No evidence. established that respondent has been. convicted of or pleaded guilty to the. felonious and intentional killing of. deedented. No evidence established by a. prepoundonderance of the evidence that. respondent feloniously and intentionally. killed deedent. No evidence established. that respondent mismanaged the estate, violated any court order, intentionally. misrepresented material facts, or failed. to perform his fiduciary duties. Absent. a conviction or guilty plea, the court.
may determine by a prepoundonderance of. evidence whether the individual. feloniously and intentionally killed the. deedent. The federal indictment is. merely an accusation and does not. establish the truth of the allegations. It is therefore ordered that the. petition to remove John Paul Miller as. personal representative is denied. So. that's a win for JP Miller. So basically. the judge doesn't feel that these. federal charges or any allegations. against JP including you know allegedly.
mismanaging Micah's estate were enough. to remove him as personal representative. at this stage at this point in time. However, despite the judge's ruling, Micah's family is reportedly not backing. down. Court documents show that just 8. days later on September 18th, her mother. filed a notice of intent to appeal the. decision that they will file a statement. of issues on appeal within 45 days of. this notice. As of now, we haven't. received the family's legal arguments. that are connected to their appeal. JP. Miller still remains or seemingly.
remains in control of Micah's estate, so. we'll have to wait and see how both the. probate and federal court battles. continue to unfold. But I want to break. this down. I want to analyze this. Okay, this is where I want to bring in Shawn. Derdia. He's a civil rights and criminal. defense trial attorney. Perfect person. to talk about this. Sean, thanks for. taking the time. So, I'm reading the. court's decision here. Do you have to be. convicted in order to be removed as this. representative role? Because the court. says, you know, absent a conviction or. guilty plea, the court may determine by.
a prepoundonderance of evidence whether. the individual feloniously and. intentionally killed the deceited. I. mean, it it seems to me, obviously, he's. not charged with her killing uh with her. death. Again, she died by her own hand. But there is a connection here, right? There's a connection between what he's. alleged to have done and now whether or. not she he can be controlled controlling. her estate. Do you have to be convicted? How does it work? >> Thank you for having me on, Jesse. And. Jesse, you are right. You don't need a.
conviction, per se. Like you mentioned, the judge can find by preponderance on. the evidence that a crime was convicted. But at this stage where we are, I mean, he is innocent. He is innocent till. proven guilty. So, for that reason, I. could see why the judge wouldn't even. get into that territory of removing him. as the administrator. And and you. mentioned something. you said uh he was. never charged or accused of this death, but if you remember when the death did. happen, they they did investigate him, right? And back in that settlement back.
in 2024, he signed with uh the person. challenging the estate, they signed a. settlement that they would not pursue a. wrongful death against him. So, um, you. know, right now the judge, he. potentially could remove him, but given. the fact that he hasn't pled guilty, he's asking for a trial, I don't see any. way where he would remove him. >> Let me just expand upon this for our. audience for a minute just to understand. because again, if you go to this.
argument that the subject matter of the. criminal investigation could be directly. tied to his role in his late wife's. estate, right? Again, this is not a a. scenario where he's been charged with, I. don't know, like a car accident that had. nothing directly related. So, let me. just let me just read to everybody. He. was indicted on two charges, okay? Cyberstalking and making a false report. to police. This is back in December of. 2025. And uh again, in the indictment, it appears that Micah is referred to as.
victim one. Count one, cyberstalking. The grand jury charges that beginning. honor around November 16, 2022 and. continuing through hon or about April. 27, 2024 in the district of South. Carolina and elsewhere, the defendant. John Paul Miller with the intent to. kill, injure, harass, intimidate, or. place under the surveillance with the. intent to kill, injure, harass, intimidate victim one used interactive. computer services to engage in a course. of conduct that place victim one in. reasonable fear of death or serious. bodily injury and caused attempted to. cause and the course of conduct would be.
reasonably expected to cause victim. unsubstantial emotional distress to. which John Paul Miller sent or caused to. be sent unwanted and harassing. electronic communications to victim one. used or threatened to use nude videos. and photographs of victim one to harass. victim one. Posted a nude photograph of. victim one online without victim 1's. consent. Placed or caused to be placed. tracking devices on vehicles used by. victim one. Placed victim one or caused. victim one to be placed under. surveillance with the intent to harass. and intimidate victim one. Damaged. victim one's vehicle. interfered with.
victim 1's finances and banking and. interfered with victim 1's daily. activities. Count two, making a false. statement to law enforcement. Quote, the. grand jury further charges he falsely. claimed victim one had been calling him. more than he called victim one on March. 11th, 2024 when in fact the defendant, John Paul Miller, called victim one at. least 50 times more than she called him. He falsely claimed police had never. contacted him to stop contacting victim. one when in fact the defendant John Paul. Miller was told on March 11th, 2024 by a. police officer with Horry County Police.
Department to stop contacting victim. one. He falsely claimed he did not. damage victim 1's tires or caused to be. damaged when in fact the defendant John. Paul Miller used or caused to be used a. tire deflation device in victim one's. tires. Sean, I go back to you. These are. the allegations. They're purely. allegations, but they are about. seemingly Micah and now he is still in. control of her estate. You I go back to. the point h is is you know she's. appealing. I mean does it is an appellet. court going to look at this and be like.
wait a minute I don't know. >> honestly Jesse when you read it out loud. you you kind of made me change my mind a. little bit. I mean he was indicted so we. can't uh that is an important fact. It's. not it is an accusation but it didn't. come back with a no bail. They came back. with an indictment. The grand jury did. So, I mean, the fact that, you know, he. posted, you know, accused of posting. nude photos of his late wife, he. threatened her, the the harassing phone. calls. I mean, when you when you couple. all that evidence, I mean, I I could see.
how a judge could look at that look at. those facts and say he may not be the. right person to uh administrate be the. administrator of her estate given those. facts. I I I could see potentially on. appeal it could come back. >> because I it's kind of like it's okay. let's be clear it's very different but. when my heard about this my first mind. went to the slayer statue because we're. covering a Nick Grinder right this is a. guy that wants access to his money um. and there's an argument well the slayer.
statue you can't inherit money from. somebody that you killed now he it's. only allegations there he. [clears throat] hasn't been convicted. but it's that same kind of mentality how. do you and I don't know if there is. necessarily a benefit to him per se. It's a relatively small estate, Micah's. estate, >> but it's providing someone in a role. overseeing the affairs of someone that. you are accused of victimizing. Again, purely allegations for him. But I just. wonder um you know, whether an appellet. court is going to look at this.
differently. >> I I could see that and you're right. about the Slayer statute. It's it's. there to protect victims. And Jesse, I I. do agree with you. The estate is. considerably low. I think it's maybe. $10,000. It is a small estate, but if we. look back into what happened, uh I think. it was about 6 months before her death, there were properties that were in her. name that were transferred to the. church. So, uh that is another thing I. think courts could look at because uh. that transfer was done right before her. death. And that's not to say that he had.
anything to do with the debt, but again, it was a suicide um few months before. property was transferred. So, I think. maybe a judge could look at that and say. maybe, you know, some something is going. on here. >> Now, again, I go back to the statement. that he made um where he talks about. what it was basically, I've lived seven. years with a person who had to take a. pill every day or she would threaten to. kill me or someone else. He talked about. um you know, kind of how they got there. And then he goes, I he's asking the. court um to be the personal.
representative so that the creditors can. be paid, that he can honor all of. Micah's wishes. How much does the court. take that into consideration? >> I I think the court weighs several. factors. Uh that is something he they I. think by law it goes to him because he. was the husband at the time. They. weren't divorced or anything. So by law. that is the default, but uh given some. of those circumstances, the fact that. statements he made himself saying that. they had they had issues throughout.
their marriage, there were problems. uh. I could see a court uh potentially. remove him and placing uh the mother uh. as the administrator instead. >> Let me ask you this. Is there anything. that he has done or will done with. respect to Mike as a estate right now. that could potentially play a role in. his uh his federal criminal case? >> Uh specifically what he's done uh with. Micah's estate at the moment. The only.
thing I can think of is like we said. right before she died uh property was. transferred from Micah to the church and. that in itself is uh it's not a crime in. itself but I think coupled with. everything else involved I think the uh. the photos he posted the the harassing. text messages the the tracking he did if. you couple all that evidence together uh. I think it could show like a pattern. that a judge could see that he may not. be the best fit. Do you know how long I. I know this is a different jurisdiction.
from where you're from, but if she. appeals this uh you know, Micah's mother. fights, do you know. >> what a time frame is by, you know, we. can get an answer as to who's going to. be taking over for the estate or. administering the estate? >> Well, it depends largely on how much. evidence there is to consume. I think. this isn't this isn't too burdensome of. a case. It's not so much evidence that. court appeals court have to look at. So, I could see maybe like in three, four. months we could have a decision. >> Interesting. Look, I it's another.
component of this. This is ugly. It's. another back and forth between JP Miller. uh and Micah's family. Again, these are. all allegations against him. He has a. right to fight his case. He is innocent. unless proven guilty, but this is uh an. interesting wrinkle that may or may not. be connected uh to the criminal case. So, Sean, I thank you. I appreciate you. taking the time and [music] giving us. some more things to think about. Thank. you for having me on, Jesse. >> That's all we have for you right now. here on Sidebar. Everybody, thank you so. much for joining us. I'm Jesse [music].
Weber. I'll speak to you next time.
