My generation was really the last. generation that we had no social media. I remember the organ trail was like the. the dialup sound. AOL chat rooms [music]. MySpace chat roulette. It's a dangerous. place. I look what. >> you look for. >> Well, I am. I am terrified of AI. The. internet was already scary enough. Drew's like ASMR. How the do you know. what ASMR is? >> AI? >> No, I'm not AI. I'm not AI. I can't. skip. I'm trying to get out of here.

I want to talk about. digital life and what I find so. interesting and what I get asked a lot. about is that my generation was really. the last generation that I don't want to. say we still had real life cuz that's. unfair to say, but we had no social. media. We had no real internet. Dialup.

started like I remember when Dialup. started. I remember when we were given. Facebook and MySpace and all of those. other platforms which were before. Twitter and Instagram and Tik Tok and. all those things. No one will ever know. life without the internet now, which. there's pros and cons to everything. I. think it makes me really sad for my kids. just because I knew life before any of. that. And I knew what it meant to be.

bored. I knew what it meant to have to. go make friends with your neighbors. I. knew what it meant to call someone's. landline and have to speak to their. parents and entertain their parents and. have the proper conversation. Those. things no one has to do anymore. So you. almost don't know how to do that kind of. stuff. Even making appointments or. reservations, you can do all of that. online. So those.

humanly tools. that we learned the older we got, kids. don't really have to learn that stuff. anymore. It's so strange. I also think. that's why people fall in love with. creations they've made on AI or robots. or I read all these crazy stories that I. find outlandish, but I understand how. people get there because we now live in. a society that it's basically touchless. It can be humanless if you need it to. be. Yeah. So, basically, that's what I.

want this episode to be about is talking. about what I experienced, what I went. through, and where we are now. When I. was growing up, I didn't have the. internet. We didn't have specifically. social media, but the internet, I. remember having a game called The Organ. Trail. And the Organ Trail on a real. computer was like the And playing that. game. I It was just amazing. And that I. would think is like my first memory of.

really the computer, which is crazy. Hearing the dialup sound. Oof. It's a. little traumatizing, triggering at this. point. AOL chat rooms, a legendary place. to be. Being able to talk to your. friends through there and you just felt. so cool and there was different chat. rooms. And for those that don't, I don't. know if chat rooms still exist, but I. know there used to be chat rooms like if. you have a fetish, there's a chat room.

for a fetish. If you are just girls. wanting to talk to other girls like as. friends, you can go that way or like. kids 18 and under like just to talk. And. at this point, I don't believe, and. maybe this is me being naive, I don't. believe it was like really a sketchy. place to go. I felt like, at least my. experience, like chat rooms were more. like silly and like I can't believe I'm. talking to Sarah 3721 who lives in.

Ireland. Like it was just like an. experience. Then I remember Facebook. came around. I wasn't a big Facebook. girl. I was definitely a MySpace girl. My top eight at the time, I mean the. cool thing is it rotated all the time, but definitely the twins, Malik and. Cadia. Um, I had a friend named Megan. who was in the top. Like, we had a bunch. of girlfriends that were in there then. I'm sure my brother. I don't know if my. sisters were, which is messed up, but I. don't know. But yes, MySpace was fun. I.

did love a chat room. I still think I. love a chat room. And then I remember. Twitter came out and Kim was like, "You. have to get on Twitter." And I'm like, "What is Twitter?" And it was just I. couldn't really understand it, but we. all got on Twitter and this was before. Instagram. And then Twitter was the. place to be. And I used to have Twitter. chats and it was so fun to interact with. other people, especially for us. We were.

newly coming up into filming our show. We were newly doing new projects. I. loved using Twitter as almost a focus. group for so many of our businesses. And. at the time, it everyone was so much. more positive. I don't think people. realize you could use these things for. negativity or evil at the time. I don't. remember experiencing a lot of. negativity when social media first came. out. I think people were so happy to. communicate with one another and when we. did I remember we my sisters and I were.

writing a book and we were thinking of. the title for it and I remember us. tweeting out like three different titles. and we let people on Twitter pick the. title for the book. We used social media. as a focus group and it was nothing. scary. We weren't it wasn't negative. It. was when people were really like. supportive and rooting for one another. and it was just a different space. Now. it's a much scarier space I will say.

that you have to navigate through. I. also remember my little sisters Kendall. and Kylie. They wanted social media. My. mom said they can get social media as. long as Chloe always has your password. and she'll be checking. And I remember. Kylie said, "I don't know if you ever. actually checked our social media, but. Kendall and I were in such fear that you. would." So, we were always on our best. behavior cuz I would check the DMs and. everything. And I thought that's really. cute that they still remember that. And. then next came Instagram. You just.

posted whatever you wanted to post. Captions weren't really a thing. Aesthetic was not a thing. Lighting was. not a thing. No one knew what they were. doing. It was just fun. It was like, "This is my mood board. Everyone, this. is what I'm doing." It could be like a. Starbucks cup or like a can of. something. It was the strangest content. we were posting. If you probably went to. the beginning of my Instagram page, Lord. only knows what it is. It's probably. ridiculous. But that was the fun. No one. really thought about it and no one was.

being judged for it. But [clears throat]. then Instagram took a turn that. everything had to look perfect. The. aesthetic, like the your aesthetic page. on your profile page has to all be. cohesive. I don't know when that all. happened, but it happened. But I do. think it's crazy that the generation. under me and beyond will never know life. before social media or the internet. And. to me, that's crazy. I feel really lucky.

that I get to experience both. I love. that I have the reference point of life. before the internet. Our show came out. before there was real social media. And. I remember then we used to use our show. to like debunk rumors or set the record. straight, if you will. We had our show. and that was our platform and that's how. we gave our side of the story or. whatnot. Then Twitter came around and. then we used Twitter as a similar tool. If we wanted to fight with someone, yell.

at someone, set the record straight, like I said, use it as a focus group, get people's opinions, we used Twitter. and it was an incredible marketing tool. It also was a place that you weren't. afraid to say the way you felt. You. didn't have to worry about cancel. culture and let me overthink every last. thing I say and am I offending this. person or that brand or whatever. Now. it's definitely not the same. You have. to overthink everything and everything.

has to be PC and wrapped up in a bow and. you can't have your thoughts. What was. some of that transition like just going. from like a handful of people commenting. to this axis of of millions of people. being able to just give their. unsolicited opinions? >> Yeah. You know, when we first started, even though like you we all had like. this lovehate relationship with the. paparazzi, I think when we were young, we loved it and it was fun and different. and you also knew where to go to be.

around paparazzi. Like in LA, there's a. street called Robertson Boulevard and. Robertson had like the Ivy and Kiten and. like certain stores like you just knew, let's walk Robertson and we're going to. get paparazzi. It was a different beast. Then it turned into paparazzi overload. And then there were so many more outlets. that were like blog outlets that did not. were not a thing a few years prior to. this. And then navigating that and. navigating that, okay, we have to get.

used to this is a different beast. There's so many more outlets. How do we. figure this out? There's no real safe. space, quote unquote, if you will, to. then with social media, everyone trying. to be a reporter or at least have a. voice, big or small, and even if someone. has no credibility, they'll still use. their voice as if they do. I've heard. people say certain stories, it's so. completely false, but they do it cuz. they realize, oh, the more negative I.

am, or if I say this, the more salacious. I am, that's going to then turn into. clickbait. and they don't care if. they're credible or not. They just want. to tell this story. We've experienced. stuff like that. So, it is really. dangerous cuz you sometimes don't know. who's telling the truth or who isn't. I. think that's also why, at least for me. and my family, you have to be so. careful. Oh my gosh, when Keeping Up. first premiered, so Court and I didn't. really care about the show. We were both.

like, we have our stores. I had Dash. court was next to me and had smooch and. the show. We were like, "You're gonna. take us out of our stores. We're not. filming the show." And I remember my mom. told us, "Use the show as a commercial. and look at how many people will then. come." And we didn't have any employees. I was like, "Who's going to watch the. store?" She was like, "We could film. around it. You're going to be good." And. we did. And when I first shot, like the. first season, I did not think we were.

told, "We're going to be filler here. We. weren't told this was gonna we weren't. going to have more episodes." They were. like, "Don't get comfortable. You're not. going to have more seasons. You're just. filler until we get to this next phase.". Yeah. So, I never thought anything of. it. I was like, "Hello, I got to get. back to my store. Time's ticking." And. then, of course, the show did really, really great, and that's wonderful. But. Court and I were freaking out because we. wanted to be in our stores. So, all of. that to say, I did not control my image.

I actually did not know I even had an. image. I didn't know what an image was. I think if I were to control my image, it would have been probably more. polished than what I was or like I maybe. would have sounded a little more. eloquent. But I was not thinking. I was. like, "This is such a joke. What are we. doing? I want to be in my clothing. store." So, I did not think hard about. my image at all. Like, what an image? Well, I get this asked if I control my.

own social media. Yes, I do. That's. probably why there's no rhyme or reason. My stories on Instagram are crazy. Like, I'll be posting, I don't know, it could. be something that I'll make sense and. I'm so close to getting it right and. then I'll be like, "Oh, that's a funny. meme." And I randomly just put it on my. stories. My stories have no rhyme or. reason. But I do it all. And they're a. little It's like a chicken with its head. cut off. It's running all over the. place. >> Do you like it like that? >> I don't know if I like it like that. It's just like that's what it is. Do I.

respect when I see other people's pages. being so polished? I'm like, "Wow, this. is like so soothing to be on this page.". Sure. But I don't think I'm that. soothing. So maybe it just goes with me. Like we're a little erratic. We try to be a little polished, but we. just can't hold on that long. So, I. think it very much [music] describes who. I am. And you can tell that I'm in full. control. regardless of who you are or what it is, especially nowadays in the world of like. influ everyone can be an influencer. I. think people smell authenticity. And so. the second that you're not authentic and. you're posting things trying to get. likes or clicks or whatever you want to. call them, it falls flat because that's. not really you. I truly just post what. I'm doing. Most of the time I feel like. gosh, I post such kidheavy content or do. people think I'm like a mommy blogger.

because it's so heavy. But then I'm. like, but I am a mom, so why would I try. to be anything else? This is my life. right now. It's what I'm doing. And you. get random spurts of me doing something. adult and then that's it. Is AI. something you've incorporated into your. life? And if so, are you using it? I am. terrified of AI. So because I am of that. internet cusp, like the internet was.

already scary enough for me. I can't. handle another thing. So like even chat. GPT, I'm like I'm not talking to you. because you're gonna remember everything. I'm saying and I heard it can be used. against you in court. Like I'm not. dealing with that. So I'm not into all. this stuff. But do I think that there's. obviously awesome tools? Yes. I just. think I'm a little later in the. generation where like it's not as cool.

to me. It's scarier to me, but I think. the generation below me and then below. that, I'm assuming they're fascinated. and all for AI, where to me it's pretty. terrifying. Oh, and that's the thing. with the advancement of AI. I'll see. videos of my sisters and I have to send. it to them and be like, "Wait, did you. really say this?" And when I'm. questioning it, nine out of 10 times. it's not them, it's AI. And that's so. scary. And we'll get them taken down.

like we'll send it to the creator and be. like this is not real. You have to. remove this. This is crazy. And that. creator will take it down. But it's so. weird to me. Or I know I'm sure people. think it's sweet, but like even the AI. videos of like my dad kissing me on my. forehead or something. I'm like I don't. know. That sort of freaks me out a. little bit. I can't explain it. Like I. know people are doing it cuz they think. it's so nice, but I'm like that's just. weird. I don't know why it weirds me. out. What about that trend of like.

yourself now hugging your like younger. self? Oh my gosh, the Yes. The trend. where it's adult me hugging little me. I. think it's cute. I reposted some of. those, but my mom was like, I'm sobbing. This is so emotional. And I'm like, you. know, it's not real, right? Like I just. that one made me wonder what she thought. it was. My grandma is 91 and I can't. imagine what she thinks about all this. craziness. And she has an Instagram just.

to like look at all of us and see what. we're doing. And I I can't imagine. really what she thinks because gosh, the. advancement of everything in her. lifetime. It's hard to even compute for. me what's happened in my lifetime, let. alone her. I think my hope for my kids. is that they still will always desire to. have that human interaction. I love. texting. I think my job is so consuming.

of talking all day long that at the end. of the day I'm like I just can't talk to. another person. But I realize when I'm. not working as much or like on the. weekends I do miss the art of a phone. call and like let me chitchat on the. phone with my girlfriends and like get. caught up on everything. But people. don't do that anymore. And now if. someone, they call it cold calling. You. can't call someone without announcing. you're going to call them. So like when. people call me they'll be like, "I'm so.

sorry. I just cold called you. Do you. have a second?" I'm like, "Back in the. day it was only cold calling. Like you. just called people and like saw what. they were up to." The mystery of life. is gone. There's no mystery. And I think. mystery, especially when dating someone, is so important. Like when you get home. for the day, you get to be like, "What. did you do today? What did you eat? Where'd you go? How was your day?" Now. everyone's documenting, "Hey, I'm at.

Starbucks and I'm going to lunch in 3. minutes and then I'm going to go. swimming." Like everything is now. documented that no one even has to ask. you how your day was because I sort of. know how your day was. My wish is that. my kids still get that humanization. by not feeling like they need to. document every single thing. They get to. ask people how their day was. They get. to keep things private and for. themselves. I mean, it's sad to me. And. then I just wonder someone that doesn't.

know life before the internet, like. maybe it's not sad to them. Maybe this. is their norm is just. everything should be exposed. I don't. know. It's very weird. I always get. asked like, "Do I still have privacy?". Yes, I have tons of privacy when it. comes to social media because I don't. I'm not someone that even feels. comfortable like vlogging my whole day. It's just not what I'm used to. So, it's. not the first thing that I do. So, so.

much of it I don't post. There are a lot. of intimate moments that I'm not posting. or projecting out there, but the fun. cute ones I like to put out there and. I'm not thinking about this is going to. hundreds of millions of people. I'm. doing it more like I want my inner. circle to see this. >> Do you feel awkward recording in public? >> Oh my gosh, I feel so awkward recording. in public. I am not someone that could. publicly like set up my phone and do. like a dance or something like Well, first of all, I'm not dancing. That's.

not the type of person I am. But I see. people set up their phones or they even. do like setup shots. Like I saw someone. was explaining how they do like a. running video and they set it up and. then they went back a block away, ran. until they were off camera, then went. back to their phone. I'm like, "But. aren't you really running?" So to me, I. would never alter my day. Like if I'm. filming a workout, I'm filming it on a. tripod. If it's rough, there you go. I'm.

not slowing down my workout or repeating. things just for the content. I can't. wrap my head around that. But then I. know some people this is their sole job. and that's what they do. I just don't. understand that. Like what a crazy life. to me. But I'm sure people can. understand my life and they think the. same. So we do what we're comfortable. with. Do you ever debate having your. kids on the show or not posting them on. social media? How do you explain your. job and what do they think you do? My.

kids I remember I filmed an episode. something where I point out that my kids. maybe it was on the J Shetty show that. they don't know that I'm famous. That's. because I'm not sitting at home being. like I'm famous everyone. I don't talk. about being famous. It's not ever. something we talk about. My kids. literally since the day True was born. there was a camera in the delivery room. So my kids both seeing cameras around. the house. That's nothing out of the.

ordinary to them. They're not asking a. bunch of questions. They know we shoot a. TV show. They've never seen it. I don't. think they really know what that means. Just like everyone's recording these. days with their phones. They don't ask. questions. And I'm not offering them all. this information. Like we have a show on. Hulu, number one reality show that they. ever had. Like I'm not giving them a. rundown on this. And if they ask, I'll. definitely tell them. But they don't. ever ask questions. It's just the normal. to them. And when we're out with.

paparazzi, every family member they have has. paparazzi. It's the normal to them to. experience paparazzi. It's strange, but. that's the norm. They're not questioning. it. And they don't have social media. They don't have the internet in any way. My kids don't have Google. They don't. have anything like that. So, they don't. know what even that means. like they. don't know what a paparazzi is. Everyone. takes pictures nowadays of something. I. don't know what they're thinking, but.

they've never asked. They ask sometimes, "How do people know your name?" And I. say, "Because I'm a really nice person. and I treat people with respect." That's. it. I'm not going to be because I'm. famous. I'm just not. And the truth is, people do know my name cuz I'm a nice. person and I treat people with respect. So, it's just a different world. I don't. know how to explain it really. when. they're old enough, they will figure it. out. I don't believe kids, my son is. three, my daughter's seven and a half.

They should not be on social media in my. opinion. They don't need to know about. the internet. When they think, like my. daughter will be like, I want to film a. Tik Tok. They don't know what Tik Tok is. cuz I never talk about Tik Tok. They. think that means a dancing video and so. we'll just film dancing and that's them. dancing on my tables and just having. fun. but they don't know about like. trending sounds unless I show them. something. I'm like, "Oh, there's this. innocent cute. chicken banana dance for example." And.

I'm like, "Let's let's play to this.". And like I'll show them I'm like, "We're. going to dance to this video." And. that's what I do. But they're not on. TikTok. They're not scrolling through. things. Tru's golden birthday is the. 12th. So, April 12th. So, I told her we. can discuss her getting a phone on her. 12th birthday. That doesn't mean she'll. get social media. That means she gets a. phone. I don't think kids should have. social media until I mean I would love.

16, 17, but a phone we're discussing on her 12th. birthday. What are some of my favorite. accounts to follow on social media? So, I'm someone I like to follow people that. I actually know because that's what I'm. curious about what they're doing. Not to. say that people I don't know, I can't be. interested in. There's a few like. interior design accounts, like things. that are visually stimulating to me. Some of the hobbies that I like, I like. to follow. And then most of them are.

people that I'm really friends with. because that's how I stay in touch with. what they're doing. I see people follow. like 3,000 plus people. That's cool. But. then I'm I feel like it floods your. timeline and you never get to see what. your actual friends are doing. So I. don't want to just follow random people. to follow random people. I'm also never. offended if someone unfollows me. I know. like your friends if they're like I so. and so unfollowed me. I'm like how does.

one even know that? Like I don't know. how somebody finds out if you get. unfollowed and I didn't know that meant. that you're not friends. Sometimes I. just don't want to follow you cuz your. content is trash and I can't handle it. So I'll unfollow you not because I don't. love you, just because I don't want to. see this weird ass. So I didn't know. that was like that meant we're not. friends in real life. So if a friend. finds my content to be trash, by all. means and I won't think we're not. friends. Oh, it's interesting. So, what.

I find crazy is like the ASMR. True, who. does not have social media, but Dream, I. think Dream is the one that like teaches. her things cuz True's like she'll go. like ASMR. I'm like, how the do you know. what ASMR is? And she asked what it. stood for and I was like, I actually. don't have a clue what this stands for. But True will say little things like. that that I know it's Dream teaching. her. But she know she'll do little. things like the tapping or like she.

loves the popping sound. So that's cute. We also do a she does watch stuff on. YouTube and there are a lot of ASMR. videos so maybe that. But I just find it. so funny ASMR when you're seven. I like. just learned what ASMR was. What the. hell's mukbangs? >> Some people eat a lot of food at one. time. E cannot stand. the eating live on camera. just it just freaks me out. But my.

algorithm is fashion animals like. miniature cuteass farm animals. I love. that algorithm. Quotes nails workouts. I. don't know if I said that. It's pretty. much it. Or like my family stuff. That's. really it. And I love my algorithm. It's. happy. It's sweet. It's safe. I feel. like we're good there. I do love. Instagram for all of the organizational.

ideas that I've discovered. I mean, h. that I find recipes on Instagram. My. saved folder on Instagram is really deep. and I love it.
