What's The Weirdest Way To Cook A Hot Dog?
What's the weirdest hot dog cooker in history? Let's talk about that. Good Mythical Morning. History has brought us many weird things. 80s hairbands, the flossing dance trend. Link's serial killer glasses. But today we're more interested in the history of culinary arts, more specifically, hot dog cookers. Hot dog cookers, so we have rounded up, first some hot dogs.
Yes. But also hot dog cookers from all the way back from the 40s to present day to find. out how we should be hottin' our dogs. Okay, boys, first up. This is Makkaraputki. Oh, yes. Which translates directly to sausage tube by Hukka. Sausage tube. Yes, there's a very convenient, uh, promotional video for you to watch. to figure out how to cook this thing.
Oh, yes, please. What? We're in a sauna. We're putting a dog in something and putting it on the rocks. For, I think, 15 to 20 minutes. I don't know why, but I just think so. Hold on. And then you put it down on your plate, and then. This is a joke, right? It's got a slit and you put your fork in there and you pull out. That's a fat wiener man. A hot dog, a Makkaraputki. I mean, okay, hold on a second. So can you imagine being in a hot, sweaty sauna and then just the smell.
of a hot dog starts disarming you? Well, I don't do it. You, you? I love a sauna. I don't want a hot dog smell in the sauna. Only time I smell that. Or do I. I'd think it was you. Or do I? Maybe I do, well. Do you. Okay, so we have an improvised version of this. We've got some official, uh, sauna rocks. You gonna stick. We don't have a big dog, we got. In Finland, they got some big wieners, but, uh, here, we, we don't, we're.
In Finland, they do. In Finland there, I didn't know it existed, but I'll tell ya. If it does, they got big wieners over there, which a lot of people didn't know that. This is made from 100% authentic, finished soap stone. They're not self-conscious at all at the saunas. You know what I mean? Put that there. We're really gonna get it down in there. 15 to 20 minutes, well. $37. That's a perfect amount of time to just push this to the. side and let it do its thing.
It stinks a little, so I wouldn't argue if you took it further away. We will revisit that one to decide if it's a Wiener Winner or a Frank Flop, at the end. But now let's pull in the next one. Oh. Okay, this is the Re-Nu Electrocuted Hot Dog Machine. To cook your dogs, all you have to do is place the prongs through each end. of the hot dog, pop on the light, and turn on the switches next to each dog. Okay. Just so, just in case you're wondering, yes.
As described on the listing where we bought this, this antique hotdog cooker works on. the same principle as the electric chair. So it is literally sending an electric current that is. Don't touch it. Unfiltered, it's off right now. Unfiltered directly from the wall. This is like taking a wiener and sticking each end of the wiener into. the prongs of a, an outlet, okay. So I'm gonna. Which, if you can bend it enough. I'm gonna load these. More power to you. These top ones, it's not plugged in right now, right?
Right? So I'm gonna touch it. Okay. But they would do these at like carnivals and fairs and stuff, would they? I mean. I really enjoy the copy on top of the machine. Electrocuted hot dogs are delicious. Well, only one way to find out, take this Finland. What, what made you skip one? Oh, I didn't even notice. Does it matter? Turn it on. Okay, so now it's on.
It's plugged in, but it's not on. Plugged in, and now. Can I? No, this is my thing, man. Well, I'm just, I'm being a little impatient here. Yeah. Oh, you're being a little impatient. Oh, I just turned. Okay, so this is off. Now, the whole thing is on. Well, it was on. And now, and. I thought the electric chair made a noise, like, eh. No noise. Oh, oh, it's bubbling.
It's bubbling. That one's bubbling. So this is from the 40s. Oh man. So like, they're like, can you imagine just what's happening in this wiener right now? There's just a whole electric current going right through it, cooking it inside. How much did we pay for this thing? I don't really understand how these were ever like a, like a thing, but. Step right up. We might be about to find out. It's the 40s, anything goes. Oh, do you really wanna know how much we paid for this? Yeah. 200 bucks. 200 bucks. Well, it does work. That's a steal. Oh, you're not, you're you're pleased.
Oh, it's smoking. It's smoking. It still works. It's smoking. Do you see that? Oh. Sizzle, sizzle. Yes. Just electricity going through the wiener. Oh look, look at wiener juice is just coming out. Wiener juice. You waving at it. Hi, wiener juice. I'm trying to keep wiener juice from going in my face. Oh, do you? Oh, sparking. Look at the sparks. You see the sparks? Can y'all see that? Can you? Yes. You see the sparks though? Yeah, we see. Yeah. Sparks. It looks like little flames. Yes. See, little flames.
How long do we go? It's like cooking from the inside out. This is better than a microwave, look. Better than. They're telling us to stop, but I don't want to. I mean, look, it's dripping. I want this thing to be fully cooked. I am gonna sink my teeth into these electric wieners, like, I've never done anything before. Why didn't we clean it first? Is that, is it that stained? We cleaned it. So that you can see that it's getting kind of dry on the outside, which makes. me think that okay, maybe we're cooked. And off and off and off and unplugged and now I'm going to rubber tong.
Can you, uh, get your buns ready, Link? Yeah, uh, I don't want to use a bun, so I think what we should do is, uh, 'cause there's probably tetanus on these. All right, cut this in the middle. Cut it in the middle. I'm just gonna go straight raw wiener. I don't even need a bun. I don't need a bun. Straight raw wiener.
And I'm gonna cut it in half and I'm gonna just. Look it, look at that man. Oh, it's hot. Oh yeah, it's hot. Look at that. I mean, electricity just went through that. Why am I cutting it this way? I don't know. I, it didn't, it didn't get burnt that deep in it. Eat it. It is hot in the middle. Oh yeah. I mean, it's cooked all the way through. It's wonderfully, evenly heated.
Evenly, like every single part of that wiener got electrified. For displaying collectible use only. Ha. No way. This thing is begging to be back on the market. You know what Daddy's bringing home tonight? Hot dogs. Hot dogs for everybody, including the dogs. This is a, a Wiener Winner. Next we have the Quick Baker and Hot Dog Maker by Exeter. Ooh. Yeah, it's on. This cooker. I'm good. Makes the buns at the same time as cooking the hot dogs, all you gotta do is fill.
the batter about halfway up in the slots, then place a hot dog in the middle. So I'm, I put a glove on this hand. Yep. And now I'm gonna use this hand. You're all over it, man. Well, I mean, typically you wouldn't be behind this thing. I'm, in my defense. Uh. It's hot back here. It's hot here too. Oh, hello, George Foreman. Where'd you get your ideas? From this trough here, we're gonna fill this trough up with. So it makes hot dogs in rolls.
So that means a hot dog inside of a roll. I don't know why I have a knife. Let me do this one. Um, so we're gonna fill these troughs up with some, uh, some pancake batter. Yeah, just do a little bit of this. Oh, it's not, let's, let's spray some, let's spray on some stuff in here. Okay, what, spray first. Okay. All right. Yeah. Yeah, cover your eyes. I did these two right here, Link. Oh, I can tell. All right.
You're gonna pour, huh? Yeah. I'm just gonna pour and then you're gonna do a little spread. Look at that. I mean, this is step right up. We're back in the fair. We are putting our unsweetened. A little bit more in the first one. And stop. Oh yeah. Okay. Now grab yourself a wiener and you just place. Oh, nestle it down. You just place. Looky there. And then you close. And then you close, and then you touch the back with your bare hands.
And then, bakes in five to seven minutes. Now you could have, according to the picture, you could have baked in some flavor to each. roll for taste, onion, garlic, et cetera. We'll never know what the other ingredients were. And um, man, we were alive in the 70s, but we were too little. to even, oh no, we got leakage. Oh, we got leakage. We got leakage. That's a good sign. If you're, if you've ever been at the, uh, you know, the Motel 6 or wherever.
they have the waffle, the wa, hey, it just looks like a baby vomiting. Yeah. That just means. Two babies vomiting. That means we did it perfectly, do not worry. We maxed it out. That's for the dog. See, the dog gets to eat every round. Um, this is a. And then it has this up here, which I think you can sit more dogs up there. Yeah. We can do whatever we want. I love the look of this thing. It looks like a keyboard. Yeah. From the 70s. Yeah.
Or like the precursor to the Atari. Right, right. It just keeps on coming. Yeah. We didn't wanna not put enough in there, you know? Yeah. Yeah. We don't wanna under you. That was so cute when you, before you sprayed the pam, you said, now cover your eyes. Now cover your eyes. Cover your little eyes, I'm spraying the Pam. He knows how scared I am. I didn't say that. He just did it. No, you said, you said, did I say cover your eyes? Yes. Yeah, but. You said cover your eyes.
Alright. Yeah, cover your eyes. But I was already covering my eyes. Oh yeah. I was re, yeah, I was responding to the. But in edit. Fact that you were covering your eyes. You can do it other way around and it's okay, yeah. I love watching batter just plop out like that. That's, you know, that's part of the fun of this thing is that you get. to watch it A little, little vomit. Okay, we went close to seven minutes because our, we went so big on the batter. We're the batter boys, you know us. Bigger and batter boys.
Okay. What do we have? What, what, what, what, what, what? What, what? What? Oh, we burned it. Nope. No, no, no, no, no, no. No it's dangling. Put it down. It's dangling. Grab it. Oh, oh, oh. Get it outta there. Oh. Now get rid of this. We did perfect, Link. Oh, there's a little bit of dog peeking. And I, and this right here is embarrassing. Is it hot?
Look what we did. And then. Look what we did. And then I wanna, I want to cut it in half. It is a bit, it is a little bit hot. Woo, daddy. Dip that right in there. Have you ever seen such a thing? And, and look how. What's the temp of the dog? Hot, but not too hot. Oh, it's, it's hot. It's hot. It's hot. I had to leave my finger on there for a second. Perfectly hot. And then what you do is you part the Red Sea and you put condiments on, but we.
Ow, it is hot. We don't have any of those. It's hot. I'm gonna have to cut it again right here. It's not that hot. Uh, I'm gonna, I'm gonna eat mine. Hmm. Hmm. Hmm. Whoa. Hmm. Hmm. This is nice. This should, this should be in every home. We just created a full intact hotdog from nothing.
You know what I'm saying? Hot. If I came out with this, you'd be like, how did you make that? I'd be like, well, you got six minutes. Don't do it. Uh. We're loving this, of course. Mm-hmm. There's no denying it. Here's a fully intact one. With a little thing coming on. You wanna have that. I think we're looking at another Wiener Winner. Next you have the Hot Diggity Dogger by Electronix Inc, it.
cooks the dogs like a toaster. Now this says it's the world's greatest hot dog maker, and maybe that's because it cooks. the wieners and the buns at the same time. We have a wiener holster. Oh. Okay, and then we've got. Throw it down here. These two crescent. Hold, hold it up. We got these two crescent. I wanna see it go into the holster and then the holster go into the thing. That's just something that I just, all the way, raise it up. All the way, I wanna see every bit of it. Oh, there we go.
Look at that, I mean. Is that everything you thought it would be? That's what I was hoping for, yeah. Okay. And then the buns need to be, uh, opened up. You splay that. And then you want that facing the inside there. Like that. And now we have a, uh, temperature selector here. We can cook 'em rare all the way to well done. I'm gonna go with medium and we're gonna start this thing. Okay? Get your, get your bun down. I didn't splay it hard enough. Okay. That's a hazard. We, we definitely have cookage.
I can hear it happening. Already. Now, I'll eat a rare hot dog. I don't really do it anymore, but. One time, my neighbor, he said, you ever had a, you ever had a raw dog, a raw, a raw? Go back to your house, man. He said. Just turn around, go back. You ever have a raw hot dog? And I was like, what? He was like, yeah, it's completely cooked. You can just eat 'em right out of the package. And then we went into his kitchen and we raw dogged it and right outta the fridge. Right outta the fridge.
And I was like, okay, I guess I'm gonna do this now. And so I did it for years. Every time I did it, I thought of him. He taught you something that you adopted that habit of just eating refrigerated hot dogs. Going into the kitchen, and I would go, I had this thing I would go. through and like grab like cold cuts. Cold cuts, cheese, and then I'd be like, oh, get a wiener while you're at it. Wow. You know, I mean, I had so much processed meat. I think that eating refrigerated wieners is. Is good. Common practice. I remember that at, um, my relative's homes, but I did not want to partake.
What if it popped up and each wiener went right in my eye. Like a Final Destination thing. Like that deep. And I, I died right. Deep enough to kill you. Here on the show with got like wieners outta my eyes. I think it's burning. No, we got splittage for sure. It's burns. That's what we want. It's burning the bun. It's definitely burning the buns a little bit, but that's part of the test. Mm-hmm. I mean, you know, I don't wanna take my buns out early. No. Oh, that was anticlimactic.
Okay. So, uh, take the tongs and take that out. Take the wiener mobile out. Oh. Oh. Don't drop that on me. And then what? Drop it here. Yeah. And now pick it up. Drop it. How, how do you want me to drop it? Like it's hot. Maybe like it's. And then, uh, those are just fine. They're not too bad. Whoop, up, up, up. It's fine. It's fine. It's, it's, I'm not burning myself again today. It's fine. It's, it's fine. I'm gonna put that in there.
So you can see how toasty that got. Ooh, that's kind of perf. Oh, look at that. That is, so they consider that a medium wiener. Would you consider that well done? I think that's, no, I think that's pretty medium. Pretty medium? Okay. Reliable. A nice little split at the end of it. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I'm going in. Okay. I'm gonna give it a nice firm squeeze. Hmm. Hmm.
It's not too hot. Here's the thing. But it ain't cold either. I'm missing about the wiener that was in the bun. All, all the roll. Mm-hmm. Last round. The crisp, the crispiness of the outside of the wiener skin. This is, this is classic. And it's reliable. It's accurate after all these years. But it doesn't have the fun of the last round. But. And so, I mean, do we want both in the house? Each guy got a wiener.
We're both happy. At the same time. Yeah. But we could've gotten four wieners at the same time. That's too many wieners. Well, two, two for you. Two for me. If I'm gonna have a wiener, I want one at a time. I'm just trying to say. You ever seen me take two. After the last round? I'm trying to flop this because I don't want both of these in the house. I, Hey, listen, it's okay. Do you want this or the last? To be absolutely obsessed with hotdog makers, which is what I am. For me, there we have not seen a Frank Flop yet. This, my friend, is another Wiener Winner.
Speaking of hot dogs, you can catch new episodes of A Hot Dog is a Sandwich, the podcast, with Mythical Chef Josh, wherever you get your podcast, and it's. also now on its own YouTube channel again. So check it out there. A Hot Dog is a Sandwich. Learn some food stuff. Next we have the Hot Doglicious Microwave Hot Dog Cooker. Instead of me telling you how to cook this, why don't we watch. this convenient little video. Okay. You don't even need a head to cook.
Okay? All right, so. So it's a. Oh, it is. It's cutting the hot dog. You smoosh a hot dog down. Oh, yes. And this is gonna steam the bun. You throw a bun over the top. This is going to steam the bun, which is even better than a toasted bun, my friend. And then 55 seconds. Oh, they've dialed it into 55. Less than a minute. See, look. Oh, you flip it upside down. Hot dog water. Oh, what? Well, I wouldn't call it water. Steamy. What? Hold on, and it just puts it into the bun.
If you can do this as flawlessly as that headless woman did. Yes. I will be so impressed with you. Alright, and it says BPA free, but does that make me not care about microplastics? Yeah, don't worry about that. Okay. Don't worry about that. So, what I'm gonna do, well there's a hair right there. I'm gonna get rid of that. It's, it was, it was a ladies hair. I could tell it wasn't one of mine. Alright, so I'm gonna. Oh, there's another hair on the, on the dog itself. Yeah, yeah, yeah. That one might have been mine. Yeah, could have been. We don't mind. We don't mind.
And I'm gonna touch it with every single one of my fingers. Yeah, it doesn't matter. We're about to microwave it. And then I'm gonna shut that and forget that that's there. Hey, you trying to help me? Yeah, yeah. Yeah, you can help me. Yeah. Yeah. How does it feel? Put that, put that over there. Okay. I mean you challenged me to do something. Okay. And then, you put what will eventually become the plate with holes in it on top. Put it in there. Time cook fifty five seconds. Start.
Look at that. I would appreciate it if you poured the hot dog water off into your mug, not mine. We are using the term hot dog water very loosely. That's so steamy. It's so steamy. Now, let, let me not do this wrong. Turn the whole thing over. I turned the whole thing over. If you were about to do it wrong, 'cause you were reaching for that thing to pull it out. And then I'm gonna grab this. There's not actually much juice in there. Hold on. I don't know man. It's okay. Maybe we had a juice. It's okay.
A juiceless wiener. Okay, now you open it up. And it doubles, it doubles as a plate. But we need to cut it. With holes in it. And I think you should take it out of that. Look at those things. Oh, it's, it's a soft, moist bun. Ooh. If we had condiments, we could put stuff right on the dog and. it would go right into the slits. Woo. Oh, that's a good feeling bun. Woo. That's a good feeling dog, I bet, too. Put it in your mouth.
Is it too hot? It's hot. For you, yeah. Mm. Soft dog territory. Man. Sometimes I like a crisp dog. Sometimes I like a soft dog. I just like dogs. Everything is mushy. It's, it got a little rubberized, isn't it? Like I like. Yep. It is a little. I think 55 seconds. Was too long for the bun and I. And it says, time varied by microwave. And I wanna love this.
And there might, in a couple other words. I wanna love all hot dog cookers because I have so far. But something about this bun being rubberized is not making me happy. Yeah. I like a little bit of that crispiness and I like a little bit of the, the darkness added. with a, um, with the previous older machines. I think steam could be, a steamed bun is still good. But a microwaved for 55 seconds bun in order to become steamed. Ah. Not a great idea. So I think we have our first Frank Flop.
We are back with the Makkaraputki. Yes. And listen, I, you were questioning as a sauna lover why you'd ever want to do this. But if you got in somebody else's sauna in Finland and you were sweating. it all up, yucking it up and talking about how the country exists, and. then all of a sudden they reached, you saw 'em reach over into the thing. And pull out what seemed to be just a cylindrical stone and then do this,
didn't do that. Well, I'll do it. I'll do what they said. Yeah. Wouldn't you be a little wowed? And wouldn't you, it'd be the first thing. Oh. It'd be the first thing you told me about. Now, I'd be like, what's going on? Whatcha trying to do? Well now I can't. I would tell you about it, but I would also say, as a man who likes. saunas, especially a wooden sauna. I love the smell of the wood and I don't want wiener smell just getting all into the wood.
I mean, doesn't it stink in there anyway? It doesn't stink at all. It gets to over 200 degrees. Like what is wrong with you? It smells great in a sauna. The people in it, Rhett. No, it, it anyth, bacteria is what makes things smell bad. And so people get sweaty, but then it is just like basically cedar in there. You're like you've never been in a sauna before. Well, I'm trying to open your mind a little bit, and I'm trying to do two things at once. I'm doing everything.
Okay, well. Now we put two in here. I think maybe, maybe that was our mistake. Maybe we should have just put one big one. I mean, I think this is cool. I think it's cool. We couldn't find a wiener big enough. What if we, what if we were at a campfire and you just put this down in a campfire? It would be like, um, like, um, what, what's the thing called when you put, uh, a mortar. It's like a mortar. Mm-hmm. And then the hot dog shoots up in your face and you eat it. I mean, now this is.
It's not pretty though, what I had to do. I'm not proud of it. And it tastes pretty good. Not proud of my actions. Hmm. I mean, if I didn't have to be in the sauna while it was cooking. Those Finnish people live in saunas, man, this is proof positive right here that. they, they, they can stay in there forever. I think that this is a prank on the rest of the world because I think. that they're way too practical. They're like, we're gonna sell this. And they'll, some dumb Americans who are all getting into the sauna craze,
they're gonna put hot dogs inside their saunas, and I guarantee you that nobody in. Finland has actually ever used this one. In fact, the demonstration video, it was in a steam room. It was in a, it was in, it wasn't even a wooden sauna. I mean, it was in a sauna, but it was in a. Hmm. It was tile because they don't want this to infect the wood. Hmm. Interesting. This is a prank, we've been pranked and we're not falling for it. Frank Flop. See, we don't, we don't fall for pranks.
And you know what? The country doesn't even exist. That's right. Apparently. Mm-hmm. Huh. But I've been turned back on the hot dogs enough to, uh. I think I've had enough for the next year, year though. Go right? I mean, that's the thing. It's like I was so excited and I basically ate a couple of hot dogs over. the course of this without any sauce. Thanks for commenting and sharing this video. You know what time it is. I'm John. And I'm Meredith. And we are in Mallorca, Spain. On our honeymoon.
And it's time to spin the Wheel of Mythicality. Beautiful. Ooh, it looks good there. I bet y'all are having fun. Eating some hot dogs. Getting off on the right foot with that marriage. All right, it's about time we got rid of. What? This scorpion. Yeah. It's real. It's real, you should take a bite of it. Nope. Get rid of it, just like you said. Now click the top link to watch us guess bad definition gifts,
you'll see, in Good Mythical More. Watch new episodes of A Hotdog Is A Sandwich, now back on their own channel.
