What Country Makes The Best Noodles in North America?
What's the best noodle dish in North America? Let's talk about that. "Good Mythical Morning.". We've made it to the third and final day. of our tournament. Or tournerment. Torneyment. Tournament celebrating noodle excellence around the globe. And this time we're bringing it home, literally to our actual home. North Carolina? Hmm, close. South Carolina.
Hmm, same amount of close. North America. Yes, that's why we said North America. at the very beginning of this. I did hear you say that. It's time for. "We All Slurp in the Same Language" day three, "North American Noodle Dish Showdown.". Okay, boys, first up, we have an exotic North American dish. known as mac and cheese. You don't say? Yeah, and remember. Mac and cheese? Mac and cheese. After you taste, you'll each give it a score.
between one and 10, and the winner will join. our Asian and our European champions at the nude beach. Mm. Do the people of the world, do they know about this? Do they know just how wonderful it is? I mean, it's so wonderful. It's just cheese. This is such a good rendition. Did you know that the country. that eats the most mac and cheese is Canada? They call it Kraft dinner and they eat a lot of it. I didn't know about that. Per capita maybe? It's written right there in our notes.
Not total weight. There's nobody up there. Consumes the most mac and cheese in the world, Canada. Per capita, right? Per Canada. I don't know, I don't know. I mean, we got so many more people down here. Okay, I'm not gonna keep eating this. Good gosh, I mean you have to give it, and you can put so many things in it. The versatility. But just in it's blatantly plain form, it's beautiful. Could it be? I don't, we can't start with a 10, can we? Could it be, I think it's gotta be.
A 10. A double 10. The boys went with 10 right off the bat. Right off the bat. I'm sorry. Not sorry. This is Cincinnati Chili. representing the Midwest of the USA. We once were in Dayton, Ohio. It was definitely Ohio. Ooh. I forgot that there's. Stabbing a crouton? There's raw onions, I tried to stab a crouton.
There's a fast food establishment that we sought out. that serves this. Skyline. That's right, Rhett. Good remembery. It was very good. It is very good. I like this. Hmm. I will say it's no mac and cheese. It ain't. It's really good though. If you're in Ohio, you need to get this. And I know why they like it so much.
But does it need to be everywhere? Maybe not. I would give it. It hasn't really made it out. Yeah, I know. From Ohio in a really significant way. Why is that? I think because it's got beans in the chili. I don't know. I don't, I really don't know why. I think it's interesting. It deserves a little more, because I'm still thinking about a six. It's almost spaghetti. It's almost just spaghetti. Yeah, yeah. Spaghetti with beans and raw onions and croutons. It's a little thrown together.
I'll give it a seven, 'cause I do really like it, and I think more of the world should know about it. I've talked myself down to a six. Whoa, bless you! Bless you. He had a tuna sneeze. I think I'm allergic you to either the Midwest or tuna. Yes, this is tuna noodle casserole. Another Midwest specialty. Only one sneeze, huh? Yeah, yeah. I'm a single sneezer now. I go with three.
You're doing three these days I've noticed. Yeah, I'm going three deep. I don't eat this hardly at all. I think I could have told you it was a Midwestern thing. The Midwest Southern food crossover. There are some things that could happen in either place. This didn't happen in the south, but I could see that it would. Potluck vibes, big time. Tuna, you gotta hold your mouth just right. to get ready for it.
You gotta know it's tuna. If you think it's chicken. You're in trouble for a second. Yep. You gotta have a whole recovery and a recalibration. and then you have to talk yourself into liking it. It's like when you think you're gonna get coke. and you get tea. Yep, at the potluck. And the coke's watered down anyway. Right. I would just get water, maybe lemonade at the potluck, honestly, because it's sitting in the ice for way too long, 'cause they poured it for you, and it was a good idea. But it's just not the best beverage decision.
I'm gonna give it a five. I'm gonna give it a four, come at me. This is Hawaiian Mac salad. I'm a big fan of this. Yeah, I didn't have this until I came out here. to Los Angeles, but it's a common side. at like a Hawaiian barbecue place. This one's almost potato salad. Is there potato in this one? No potato. It's basically potato salad.
It feels like there is potato. With macaroni instead of potatoes. This one's rather mushy. I think that making the noodles mushy is part of it. Yeah, that is part of it, and heavy on the mayo. Lots of mayo. It really helps when you're eating a real fatty meat. along with it. It's a good. It's a compliment. It's a good little compliment. The thing that always gets me though is, they also serve it with rice.
So you have a lot of starch. I typically don't eat the rice, I just eat the mac and the meats, 'cause it's just starch overload for me. But I do like the way they use a ice cream scoop sometimes. to pick it up. You put it down and it's just a little dome. A little lunch lady vibe. A little dome. I like that. Hmm. This is good. It's a simple prep, even for a guy like me. Even though I've never made it, I think maybe I could. is what I'm saying.
I believe in you, but you'd have to boil the water. and put the pasta in there and not get, you could get hurt. I'm going with seven for this. Okay. Seven is where I was landing as well. It's pretty generous. It's double sevens, it's good. This dish is called Saimin. and it is also from Hawaii. Never heard of it, SAIMIN, Saimin. Saimin. Nope, Saimin. Say.
Saimin. Okay. It's very ramen-ish. Yes. It began as an attempt to recreate Japanese Ramen. with ingredients available in Hawaii at the time. All right. And it has influences that are Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Filipino, and Portuguese, 'cause immigrants from all those places were in Hawaii. to work on the sugarcane plantations. And they made this. You're full of facts. It's really good, that meat is great.
Now this isn't another fun fact here. So a guy named Mari Sullivan wanted to open. Hawaii's first McDonald's back in 1968. He wanted to add Saimin to the menu. 'cause he knew that it would be a hit. So at the time, it's still 1968, he has to bring in Ray Crock, the CEO of McDonald's himself. Really? Brings him to Hawaii. Takes him out to a local saimin stand. And so that was the first time in history, in McDonald's history, that a menu was expanded.
to include a local ethnic food. And it remained on the Hawaii McDonald's menus until 2022. when it was taken off due to a supply issue. So this has been on Hawaiian McDonald's menus. and it's right here, in front of us. Which makes me really surprised that I never heard of it. What's the meat in this? That's pork. Yeah, it's a really good pork. It's like a sweet pork. I actually like this Hawaiian pork in it.
more than I like a ramen pork. This is really good, but also kind of a bit thrown together. And maybe that's 'cause I've espoused the history so much. I'm gonna go right down the middle with a five. I like it. I don't love it. Six. This is Bahamian macaroni cheese. from The Bahamas. What? I once went to The Bahamas and I did not have this, I had a lot of conch salad.
You like? Oh, I love conch salad. I mean, but we have had this. like a cheesy casserole. Mac and cheese casserole. Mac and cheese casserole. Lilly, what else does it have in it. that might be unexpected? It has some scotch bonnets, and bell peppers, and onions. Scotch bonnets. And it's like thick like that. 'cause it has an eggy custard base. Mhm. Very good. I mean, I would serve this. and just call it a really good mac and cheese.
A lot of the mac and cheese that the people in my life make. comes out. In a pan. In a pan that's kinda like, you can square it off like this, you know? But the thing that is setting this apart besides that is. The other flavors. Just the other like subtly spicy flavors, which are nice. God, I mean, in many ways it's like mac and cheese, but with even more flavor.
It's not as simple. You want it to be saucier? It's trying harder than mac and cheese, which we both gave a 10. I realize that. Are you still, are you thinking about a 10. in this one too? I mean, I might be thinking about an 11. just because I went to 10, but you know what? I'm thinking nine because. As I'm eating it. Because I'm whispering, I feel like I need to say something a little sus. You know what, Bahamian people are known to eat this.
with ketchup. And I think the reason they do that is it's a little dry. That's what's notching it down for me. Plus it doesn't make the same sound. of when you like stir it in a bowl. That's a powerful sound. Okay, so I'm gonna go with a nine. I'm gonna go with a nine. "Good Mythical Evening" is only two weeks away. And listen, this one is gonna be unlike anything. you've seen before. Right This very second, there is a giant asteroid.
headed on a collision course for earth. Course. Course. Of course it's coming. Our mission is to blast off to space to stop that asteroid. and save humanity by drinking a lot. And just having a night of debauchery. Come on, take off with us on October 23rd from home, or at a participating Alamo Drafthouse. Those are really fun places to go. and watch with some mythical beasts. Yep. It's a good time. But I mean, we're warning you.
This is R rated, it is unpredictable, it's uncensored, completely live, anything could happen. Get your tickets now at goodmythicalevening.com. and make sure to stick around at the end of this video. to get a teaser of some of the "Good Mythical Evening". space crew. Oh. Okay, this is sopa de fideo. Sopa de fideo. Yeah, and I said it so many times so great. before now, but sopa de fideo from Mexico.
So what do we have in here. besides chicken and carrots, Lily? Potatoes. It's a tomato-based sauce. And then the fideo noodles, which are similar to like the paella style dish. that you had. So they're like little delicate noodles. Yeah, and you toast them before. Hmm. It's not very noodle forward. No.
But it's in there. Which was my nickname in high school. He did it. I'm sorry, sometimes the door just opens. There's a pungency in there. And you gotta walk through. What is that? Probably some of the tomato. They're sour. Tomatoes are very pungent to you. But there's like a sourness. I think that's in, maybe there's a cheese in there. What kind of cheese is that? Queso fresco. It's a queso fresco. Little tang in there. That's what it is. A little bit of tang. I really like it. It's a comfort food.
I do feel comforted. I'm giving it some demerits as a noodle dish. because of the whole lack of noodle forwardness. Agreed. Taste is really good. Like taste is in the like seven, eight. But the lack of noodle forwardness is in the five, six. But I'm in a giving mood, six. I'm gonna be tough on it. Okay. And I'm just gonna go five. Oh, ouch. Last but not least,
our final noodle of the tournament, this is Dominican spaghetti with salami. Careful. I see that. There's olives. There's olives. The cubed meat is what? Salami. It has pork hearts and regular pork and beef. And then there's some seasonings. like anatto, garlic, oregano. Pork hearts? Mhm. That's in this cube here? Yeah, it's in, I mean there's a lot of like offal meats in sausage.
Offal? Don't speak too soon. OFF. Mm. Good. Saucy. That olive though, just being in there, not making me happy. I'm tasting the pork heart a little bit. I'm trying to be generous. And that's the kind of heart. that can actually go into a human and work for a while.
You know, this is the closest that we've gotten. to eating people. So you're feeling a connection. that is making you uncomfortable, I assume your number is going down. I'm going back, but I'm going back just for the noodles. Just for the sake of the olives, I'm sub five. Rhett's over there talking about pig hearts, sub four. I had a bad eating experience in the Dominican Republic. for my, was it five year anniversary? Jesse and I went down there, went to, we didn't experience much of the country, I will say. We were at like a.
Resort. Resort, there's a lot of great resorts down there. And it was one of those places that were like, "Oh, there's an Italian restaurant, and there's a so and so restaurant.". And we went to the Italian restaurant. and all of the sauce on all of the dishes. tasted like cat vomit. Oh, which you've had. Yep. If it was great for cat vomit, it was very bad. Ew, dude. For spaghetti sauce. And I feel like I'm. But was it all inclusive? It was. There you go. I feel like I've been holding a grudge. All the cat vomit sauce you want.
Against the Dominican Republic ever since, and this didn't help. So I'm gonna go sub five. I'm going four. Come on man. Don't be afraid to just give it a two. I'm afraid to give it a two. I'm gonna give it a two just to show Rhett what it's like. Oh, well I'm glad you took the fall for me. Okay, let's see which North American noodle dishes. made your top three. Your top scoring North American noodle dishes are:
Hawaiian Mac salad, Bahamian mac and cheese, and mac and cheese from the good old US of A. Of course. I'm happy with our top three. I like all of these. I feel like I know that the Hawaiian one is not gonna win. Yeah, it's gotta go. And as we've already talked, I mean, I'm standing by. Well, I wanna taste them again. Yeah, yeah, yeah, we can taste them again. But I'm standing by my assessment. that it's as amazing as it is.
And it is really good. This is juicy. It's not set in stone in the way that is or in a dish. It's a pallet for a lobster or anything else you want. This is the closest to fettuccine Alfredo. that you've been wanting. Yeah, we were trying to get back to fettuccine, man. Alfredo. So who are we kidding? That cheese sauce, it's so simple.
And where is this mac and cheese from, specifically? Just like the, oh, in real life. In real life it's from Wood Ranch. Yeah. Which is the barbecue place in downtown Burbank. It's a chain. They've got really good mac and cheese. It's got a perfect spot right here. in the middle of the nude beach, Rhett. Yeah, I agree. The best noodles that North America has to offer. are mac and cheese.
I don't think that's too controversial, but I would like to make an amendment and an apology. Yep. I would like to apologize to Dan Dan Noodles. for not giving you a 10 when I should have. And I did give you a 10, so I apologize on behalf of Link. Because I'm feeling like we're not trying to name. an overall winner in the world. But if I had to, I think I'm choosing a the Dan Dan noodles. Well, don't tell that to Dan Dan, because you didn't give him a 10. So you don't get to say it. But I apologized.
Whatever. Apology not accepted on behalf of Dan Dan. Okay. Well, hmm, thanks for commenting and sharing this video. You know what time it is. Hi, I'm Emily and that's Moose, and we're from Portland, Maine, and we just made the animal style mac and cheese. from the "Mythical Cookbook,". and it's time to spin the Wheel of Mythicality! Oh, that's some good mac and cheese. That's what you can do with mac and cheese. A good way to wrap up noodle competition week. Yep, thank you for being a part of our noods. Let's give some unsolicited advice.
Okay, Hugo, we know you're watching, and you're trying to figure out whether or not. you should cremate or bury your grandmother. In the future, because, of course, she's still around. and she's asking you to help her make the decision. Maybe go half and half. Yeah, and that's what we were gonna say. Half and half. And when we say half and half, we mean a bilateral, a bilateral cut. We're not talking about top half, bottom half, bilateral. So basically all of your grandma. gets to experience both scenarios. Click the top link to watch and see how we visualize time.
