We Tried EVERY Purple Food
We're eating every purple food. Let's talk about that. Good. Mythical Summer. A few months ago, we embarked on a totally new, not at all, like Gut Check journey to taste every food of a particular. color. And we started with blue. And little did we know that blue is basically the only color in the rainbow. that had few enough options to be able to try them all in one sitting.
So today, we're refocusing a little bit by trying only the naturally occurring purple foods, which actually makes a lot of sense, because every man made purple food is created to taste like grape. Grape deserves its own day in the sun. Yes, to become raisins. Right. It's time for Getting Colorful. Purple Edition. Okay, boys, in case you need a palate cleanser, at any point, you have some purple colored water to. That'll do it.
Okay. And I have. a purplish scoring chart. Oh, it's Harold and the Purple Crayon. Yes, yes, yes. The storybook, but it's Linkified, and. they're making this into a movie, I'm told. That's what I hear. Not a sponsor. All right. I have, for my scoring aid, just one of those things you get for free of the hardware. store with the paints on it. And I just have one, two, three, and four.
Boy, do we look great, though. Which, what am I? I'm closest to. You're none of those, dude. Dewberry. All right, let's eat. Okay. I also think you look great, but, Link, I think you look better when you're standing up in that outfit. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Look at. Look at. It's like a. It's like a dress. Hey, take your pants off, man. I don't even need pants. Get comfortable. Hey, purple's my favorite color. Take my pants. I would never take my pants off on this show.
Okay. Okay. Our first category is fruits. And before any, well, actuallys, pop up in the comment section, we're going with the culinary categorization. for all foods today, not necessarily the botanical. Well, actuallys. I like that. Yeah, yeah, yeah. And we're kicking. And it's purple on the outside, not necessarily purple on the inside. With. elderberries. Elderberries, the old. These are berries that make you better when you sick.
Oh, my gosh. But. they don't taste good. But. I'm not just thinking about the taste. I'm thinking about the medicinal properties. What is it? That it makes you have diarrhea? I don't know. It's in, like, cold remedies. It's not as bad as you're making it seem purple, man. There's nothing good about it. It tastes like a. I think it tastes okay, and I think it's very medicinal. Fifty-eight. Fifteen. It tastes horrible. Passion fruit. I like the name. I don't like the look.
It tastes like muscadine. That is tart. It tastes like muscadine. The tartish muscadine. Oh, I love that. Sour. It's nice and gooey and. crunchy and slimy. I quite like this. Eighty-three. Yeah, I'm going with eighty as well. Passion fruit. Oh, Warner Brother. Acai berry.
You say Warner Brothers? Hold on. Is this? We're brothers. Is this movie coming out and it's a Warner Brothers? Like, what is happening here? Is this? I was just like, when it's that sour, you gotta warn. me. Warner Brothers. Warner Brothers. What is this? Acai berry. Oh, frozen. Boy, it's not great when it's just by itself. I didn't know that would happen. It's bitter.
Nine. Twelve. Purple star apple. Purple star apple. That's soft and. plummy. Inconsistency. Almost pruny. Mild. This feels very Linky to me. You know, I'll go into the positive territory. Fifty-five. I'll give it a fifty-six. Prunes. There we go.
We're. lovers of prunes since college, when we got addicted to them. I love the consistency. And they're a little bit cold. I love the taste. They're a little bit cold. They're cold at room temperature. I don't know how it works. What are they doing? Thermodynamically interesting prunes. Fiber. Ninety. I love prunes. They got a bad rep. I think we could become the prune boys. I would be the face of prunes. I'll give it an eighty-six.
I'm not going to give you crazy here. Plums. A pre-prune. That is nice. It's like if. a peach had an attitude. What about all the steps from a plum to a prune? Well, it's just the step of time, Rhett. Eighty-four. But what about a half prune, half plum? That could be interesting. Not quite all the way, is what I'm saying. That could be our. That could be the white space. A plume.
Or the purple space. There we go. We could be the face of that. Plums are good. I don't like the ripe window. The window of a plum is very, very small. Not quite so small as a pear. Super critical. Seventy-two. Huckleberries. Much sweeter than an elderberry. It's what an elderberry wanted to be. This is good, dude. I like it better than a plum. Eighty-six. That's so intense.
Seventy-eight. Mangosteen. Mangosteen. Definitely. It could have been a peach. Well. It's nice. That is nice. Mangosteen. What does it look like on the outside? It's probably purple. I want to know. Man, I'm still in the eighties. That's a seventy-one for me. Eighty-four. You're really loving the purple today.
I am. It's very surprising. Fig. Fig. This is what Newtons are made out of. There's an off taste in a fig. I just don't want to eat it. straight like that. Needs to be Newton. It feels like it might be a little bit poison. Forty-three for me. Fifty-two. Boysenberries. Boysenberries.
Great in an ice cream. Not so good just alone, though. I might still give it a. it's really watery. Fifty-nine. I'll give it a sixty-four. Bilberries. Never heard of it. Oh, there they are. Bilberries. It's like a dried blueberry. Oh, they're hard. No, they're not hard. It's like eating belly button lint. From a texture. I like these. I can imagine finding these.
on a walk. When you really chew it up. And really having a good time. It's got this earthy, like. the earthiest raisin you've ever eaten. Also. almost bright and fruity at the same time. Yeah, it's hard to pin down. Seventy-nine. Yeah, I'm still. I'm still in. I'll give it an eighty. I know I'm in the eighty zone. This might be the most eighties you've ever given. Red grape. Now, a red grape. This is the grape that we had on tour.
that. we figured out tasted like grape flavor. The grape flavor is modeled after. the red grape. It bothers me. that it's not called the purple grape. This one is not nearly as grapey as the grape we had on that bus. that I swear to you. Those grapes that we stumbled upon on tour. Maybe we were under the influence. And Nick was the one who. Up tour. He's the one. He's the one who spotted it.
He tasted it. He said, these grapes taste like grape flavor. I immediately tasted one. I was convinced. Link tasted. I was like, all right, I'll taste one. I was convinced. The three of us were. Totally convinced. We were on page grape flavor grape. Grape flavor grape. And then. gave one to Hitch. Gave one to Stevie. It wasn't me. And then they were just crapping all over the idea. That one didn't taste very grapey, though.
Sixty. Yeah, but you know what it's capable of. But that one, I gotta judge it on the one I had. Sixty-six. Black grape. Black grape. Now, that's a purple. That's purple. That's a good grape. That's what I expect when I eat a real grape, not a grape flavor. You know what I mean? It's more grape than grape. When I don't have grape flavor on the brain, and I just have grape on the brain. That's what I'm hoping. That's what I'm wanting. I can taste the tannins. Yeah, that's a seventy-six.
Grapes are great, grapes are good. That's a seventy-two for me. They're really good. And that concludes the fruits category. The next category is veggies. Here we go. And we're not gonna be in the eighties anymore, are we? Starting with. red cabbage. Oh, gosh. We're just going to cabbage straight up like a couple of rabbits. I mean, there's few. vegetables that have. a crunch as. special. as cabbage. I don't disagree with you on that.
But the flavor of isolated red cabbage tastes like you're just eating. the smell of someone's bad breath. Well, it's. I think of it as, like, a peppery thing. I'm still gonna give it a sixty-three. I don't. understand. I like it. Love the texture. Seventeen. I do not like it by itself. Red onion. Red onion. why they calling? Why not a purple onion? That red onion packs a punch.
Little bit on your salad. It goes a long way. I know I'm making this face. It's a good. It's a good onion. It's not an onion for sautéing. It's for salads. You want to eat it raw, you don't want to sauté it. I'll give it a generous. seventy-seven. It's my least favorite of the onions, but I still like it. Seventy-two. Purple cauliflower. See, there we go. It's cold. Why is it. soft? It's softer than I thought it should be.
Not as crunchy as it needed. Yeah. You know why? Because it's purple? They just dyed it purple. No, no, no. It comes out the ground that way. Let's hope. Is it cultivar? A cultivar? Yeah. That's a cult of ours. That's a disappointment. Cauliflower. and a bunch of other things, they're all just the same thing, cultivated differently, including. I saw that TikTok. Thirty-one. You think I get all my information off TikTok?
Call him on it, Stevie. Maybe I just knew it already. Yeah. Yeah. This isn't good. Twenty-one. Ube. Ube. Ube, the. Hawaiian tater. I've had ube ice cream. Ooh, that's bad, bay. You started making a face before it even got into your mouth. Because I've eaten it before, and I knew.
And it being raw like that is a ten. It's not good. Fourteen. Purple sweet potato. These are the best for you sweet potatoes. Oh, there it goes. Colorful food's good for you. We're getting a lot of antioxidants. It's nicer than I would think. And it's better than the other sweet potatoes I've had. Okay. So, for me. Sixty. That puts it at a fifty-eight. Sixty. Eggplant.
Eggplant by itself, raw? Really? I really don't like the texture of an eggplant. I don't like the connotation. Yeah. How do you feel about what eggplants are known for now? What do you feel about the way that that was just commandeered? I mean, if you. If you slice it real thin and bread it and I forget it sitting there, I can do it. But I'm gonna give it a twenty. It's not great in this form. I'll give it a thirty-one. Purple carrots.
Well, there we go. What did you do to that? Oh, wow. Look at the middle. Get ready. It's gonna be soft. Look at that. It's like a. It's not purple all the way through. Yeah, just the outside. When it gets purple, it loses its snap. And the thing I like about a carrot is it snap. It's not the superior carrot. Fifty. Forty. Redbor kale. Redbor. It's got purple veins in it.
The healthier the kale, the worse it tastes. Science. You're working too hard. It's like preaching to the choir. Go elsewhere. Doesn't it also taste like. It tastes like you're eating bad breath. Doesn't it taste that way? Now that you say it. Eighteen. Seven. Purple asparagus. They're wiggling it. Don't do that. I was gonna spit it out, and then I'm like.
It kind of just tastes like asparagus. But. a funner color. Fifty-one. I give it a sixty-four. I like asparagus. I like what it does to my pee. Purple garlic. Okay. Is it? Why is it? I'm not going to bite it. I'm not going to bite it. I'm going to talk to you. Why is it translucent? I'm going to talk to you.
Thirty. Why is it translucent? Yeah, I think just the outside, like, shell is purple. So, it's just garlic. Garlic is great. But garlic by itself is a twenty. Yeah, I was generous. Sorry. Shallot. That's kind of a. Shallot's like a real big thing. No. It's like a. It looks like a big garlic. The big thing may come out of that. I don't know.
But the thing of the shallot is like, it looks like a big thing of garlic. Forty-eight. But it tastes more like onions. It's like between an onion and, it's like the thing we want to do between plums and prunes. Okay. Yeah. We want the shallot. I wish I was still there. Plums and prunes. Oh, I quite like it. Sixty-one. Radicchio. Not good. These purple arm people. are so playful.
Purple is nice. on the. It's bad, on the salad. That is so bitter. That is so bitter. It must be so good for me. Five. I know. I can feel what it's doing. I can feel what it's doing to my body, and that's going to give it an extra two points. So I'm going to give it a seven. Kalamata olives. Kalamata. Kalamata. That's so good. I got it. I've already eaten it.
I've already eaten it. I'm not gonna do it. Oh, it was KG all along. Let me just say, as someone who loves olives. Zero. A Kalamata. olive is so. wonderful. There is something wonderful about that. I'm going to give it. a one hundred.
That concludes the veggies category. The final category. is one you know and love, the miscellaneous category, starting with. lavender. Oh, Link loves lavender. I breathed out. So it's edible? Not really. For eating. Four.
Two. Poi. Poi. Poi. Be a good poi. Was I getting poi confused with the ube? Yes, you were. Poi is the Hawaiian stuff. Yeah. This is the taro root. Twelve. It's really off putting at first, but it kind of got good at the end. Twenty-eight. Purple sea moss.
Is for food? Is it a pudding? Oh, Link's gonna love this. I can taste the seed. It tastes like pond scum. This tastes like. this. I'm gonna just be graphic for a moment. Okay. So, your friend. drowns in the ocean.
I mean, that's pretty graphic. No, let's just say your friend almost drowns in the ocean. But he does spend a few days out, and. when he washes up on shore, you think that he's dead. But then when you start doing the thing to him to get him to come back, stuff starts coming out of his mouth. And then you start eating it. And it accidentally goes into your mouth, and then he wakes up. Thank you. That's exactly what it tastes like. But he lives.
He lives. Everything's okay. And because he lives. And, he loves, he hates oxidants. I can face tomorrow. And what are the scores gonna be on that one? One. Zero. Chive blossoms. Chive blossoms. That sounds like something you would have called us last season. Three. Don't try to like it. Okay, chive blossoms. Can you just say it for me, Stevie, for old time's sake?
Okay, chives blossoms. Yeah, it's a great nineties band, too. What? Is that food? Just give it a score. Four. Forbidden rice. Yes. I'm not allowed to eat this usually. Now, that's fun. Rice is not boring today. I like rice. It tastes so good in comparison to everything I've just had.
Yeah. Fifty-six. I'm giving this a seventy. Hyssop. Hyssop. Y'all getting a lot of stuff that's not food. Tastes like I'm eating a Christmas tree. Five. Four. That concludes the miscellaneous category. You've now tasted every naturally occurring purple food, and your scores will be tabulated. Introducing the GMM At Home Collection.
On your desk, make our desk your desk. But first, I'll start with these pencils. We've got, like, GMM themed. pencils. I believe these are number two. You know you're gonna love it. And Link, yours was. prunes. Your collective least favorite was the purple sea moss.
Now, the overall top three foods, in no particular order, were. passion fruit, prunes, and huckleberries. Wow. This is what a passion fruit looks like on the outside. Okay, so. Is that the passion fruit on? No, those are the. Olives. Olives. Do we have the. passion fruit opened? Or should we just? We're gonna just open it. You know, I'm gonna lobby for the prunes, because. all the reasons I gave. Fiber, texture,
health, reduces cholesterol, raises mood, nostalgia of us. really discovering these in college. Don't forget about these. But this is so. shockingly. Sour. Sour. Wonderful. I didn't know how much I liked passion fruit. It's weird. I wouldn't have told you I did. I wouldn't have told you I did. If you said, do you like passion fruit? I would be like, I don't know.
Now if I'm asked that question. And these are the what berries? Huckleberries. Yep. A resounding yes. Let me just have half a prune. Just to. Okay. Are we going with all of the health benefits and nostalgia or are. we going to with the surprise. and the weirdness? I think we gotta go with the passion fruit. Really? You didn't want to? Think about what you, all the stuff that you just said, you were making. It was like a prune campaign. You were cooking. Yeah.
We can be the face of prunes. Yeah. I think we go with prunes just for our own personal benefit. Yeah, for our own personal benefit. Yeah. We'll be the prune guys. I mean, I'm gonna turn around and eat these on a daily if not weekly basis. So. This is just, a novelty. We're totally on the same page. Didn't even need to discuss it.
