We Made Tacos With The World's Deadliest Mushroom

We went foraging for tacos in the wilderness. Let's talk about that. Good Mythical Morning. Link and I may look like two tough, rugged outdoorsmen, but looks can be deceiving. This hair, hours of gel and hairspray. This beard, purely cosmetic. Link, he's afraid of the sky. We aren't exactly survival experts. Like, apparently nature has a bunch of stuff that you can eat.

Mm-hmm. And not only that, but apparently there's also a bunch of stuff in. nature that you shouldn't eat. Mm. Or it'll kill you. So naturally, pun intended, we teamed up with local foraging expert Jess Starwood. to see if she could help us rustle up wild-grown ingredients to make a killer. taco, and also a literally killer taco. To the wilderness. Ah. Oh, yeah.

Ah. I've been bound and gagged and blindfolded and knocked out and helicoptered in to this. extremely remote location, and I have no clue where I'm at, and I am faced with the. task of having to forage for my very life. If only I had a companion to make me feel safer in this environment.

We are going to be looking at and tasting a lot of different things, and some of. them are extremely, extremely deadly. You mean, like, how, like how quickly would it kill us? One of the plants, um, probably maybe, like, 20 minutes or so when. it's, you start to feel effects. And, like, it's- That'll fit. That'll fit. That'll fit in a half hour episode. Yeah. We, we're gonna have to eat it early, I guess. Yeah. The goal if I understand it, is that we are actually making a,

a dish by the end of this thing. Yeah. We're going to transform these ingredients into something that looks. good and tastes good, and not die. Uh, just, just a couple things to be aware of. I'm not the smart one. I've gathered that. But neither is he. Okay. Okay. Okay. Right? If that makes you feel good. Let's talk about, like, what we're looking for with mushrooms. Sometimes they're really obvious and they stick out like that one right there. So that's a mushroom. That is a poisonous mushroom called a jack-o'-lantern mushroom.

Looks like holly. Uh, that's an oak tree. Okay. Yeah, it's the, it's right next to it. So, oak trees are good. We don't wanna pull that out. He just touched it. It's okay. It's not the poison oak, it's just regular oak. Like, you can-. No, he just touched the mushroom. I didn't touch it. Yeah, he did. I watched you. You, he touched it with his index finger. I touched it with my right hand, and I'm only gonna use this hand for touching things. So you have 20 minutes. No, I don't. I'm gonna wipe it on the rock. We'll start here. Mushrooms are not poisonous to touch. We are gonna hold and touch the deadliest mushrooms in the world today. Oh, gosh.

So you can touch that one all you want. Like, nice and- Just don't eat it and don't lick your fingers? A lot of people are more afraid of mushrooms than they are of plants, but that's not a good perspective to have because, like I said, you can. touch all of these deadly mushrooms. Mm-hmm. But deadly plants, pr- you're, it's not gonna be a, a good time. Should I pick it? If you want. We don't wanna just take the whole thing, right? 'Cause if we take the whole thing, then it can't…. That's not the whole thing. That's the fruit of the mushroom.

This thing, it probably goes three miles in every direction, right? Correct. So- Ha. Yeah, so this is just like the apple off of a tree. Mm-hmm. Straight back. Underground here is the mycelium, which is actually the organism of the mushroom. And so when conditions are right, it has enough water, food, sunlight, and. it's super happy and it's ready to reproduce, it sends up a mushroom. Picking that actually is helpful because it's gonna spread spores to procreate.

So it's, this is poisonous? So it's poisonous. It's not deadly. It'll give you a stomach ache and you'll, I mean-. L- little diarrhea? L- lots. Lots of diarrhea? And you'll kind of, like, maybe wish-. Link's kinda into that. Oh. He gets stopped up. His problem is it's, it gets stopped up. It'll clear you out very well. Yeah. Yeah, it'll probably just make me regular. Yeah, try it. I'm just gonna break it open. Ooh. Yeah. These are gonna be tempting. So these actually glow in the dark. What? You want me to blow? I'm gonna need another one of those, 'cause it's fine, right? That's how it works. So- Right? Yep. Amanita is the group of mushrooms, or family of mushrooms, that. contain some of the deadliest-. Uh-oh. The tastiest, and the kinda trippy ones, too. Oh, a little bit of all of the above. Amanita does it all. Have you ever seen anybody do the breast stroke technique? The doggy just took a dooky technique? You're right, I didn't think it was gonna be this difficult.

Oh, I see one. You just put your hand down there. It could've gotten cut off with my mushroom knife. Well, it didn't, dude. Okay, that's another Amanita. Ooh. So, yeah. Can you tell that's the same as the one we just got? I can tell it's the same. It's the same exact one. You didn't finish the doggy thing. So the dog will p- poop like that. I- if the legs are shaking, you know, you know it's a good one. Yeah, that's an anal gland problem. First of all, what if there's a mushroom under there, you completely ruined it? It's got gills that are white, and it's white all around, which I don't know, but. it makes me think that this might be one of the deadliest mushrooms in the world. The deadliest. Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. The deadliest mushroom in the world grows in California. It does, and it's been spreading all across the country, um, all across the northern. hemisphere, and it's popping up in places that it hasn't been seen before, so.

So what, what's the, like, colloquial common name of this thing? Like, what does the common man call this? This is the death cap. Oh, this is the death cap. The death cap. This is the one that you hear about that people, like-. Everybody's hearing, uh, about it in the news right now, and it's been killing people. And in rap songs. There's a lot of references to cap. Like capping and-. But I can touch it? You can touch it. Pluck it, man. So let's pick it and see all of it up close, just to be sure what it is.

Keep it together. Whoa, y- why are you grabbing it like that? It's, it's fragile, man. Yeah, yeah, you're bursting it. People are dying because this is similar to one that you can eat? It's very similar. Well, oh, yeah, okay. And 'cause I, I mean, we're looking at ones that are different sizes, but I assume that this could be smaller or this could be bigger. Correct. That kinda thing. Yeah. So they both have the white gills that you were talking about. My favorite white gill is Vince.

Go rest high upon that mountain, Vince. People will just eat these. Ooh. Like, they, they cook them and does the cooking, uh, get rid of the poison? Not at all. What about sniffing it? You can sniff it, yeah. It's got a strong scent. It smells like a-. Oh, actually it does. Well, yeah, y- what, what, what am I doing, just saying things? Well, yeah, y- whoa, uh, you might- I mean, it smells like a mushroom. You might be capping. I'm not capping, man. You might be capping. I do remember you saying that I could put the most deadliest mushroom in my mouth-. N- n- no, I, I didn't say it. I, I, no, I didn't. … and then spit it out.

Not about this one. It, it depends on who you are. Does it? You said, you said you could put it in your mouth as long as you didn't ingest it. Let's not give people ideas. Hey, why don't … Hey, hey, let's just do this. Maybe this is just as satisfying. Watch this. Now that we're touching it, is there poison on our fingers? Well, first of all, poison oak leg is touching my leg right now. They are very deadly. If you eat these, you'll get a stomach ache initially. You'll probably go to the bathroom. You'll not feel well. You feel like you've had, uh, some food poisoning. But then you get better, and you're like, "Oh, it was … I'm fine.

It was no big deal." Oh, stinky. I think it's, like, 24, 36 hours later, your, uh, kidneys, your liver. stop working and shutting down. That's no good. And at that point- Start bleeding out your eyeballs? No, you're just organ failure. You know, I mean- At that point, you might go to the doctor. And that, at that point, you're, it's too late. Ooh. Um, so you have to catch it early and know what you had put in your mushroom soup. And how much? How much of this could do that?

Probably, like, half a cap. What? Yeah. Could kill a human? Yeah. What about, uh, cows or deer or lizards? Do they die from this? Yeah, so if dogs get ahold of one of these, they're gonna have the same effects. So definitely keep an eye out for your pets. They show up in landscaping and urban areas, too, so- Yeah, I. definitely feel like I've seen these. It's, it's a possibility. I've seen… This is, like, the worst year we've had yet. I'm trying to remember what the, it looks like.

And it's just because it's warm. It's getting warmer, and that, there, that's why there's more of them? Yeah. I'll put it in my basket, and we'll cook it up later. Okay. Okay. I just can't believe that me- And we're sniffing it off our fingers. Putting my fingers in my mouth wouldn't be a bad idea right now. But I'm not gonna do it. I think it, it would be a bad idea. So here- What are we looking for here? We are here because of the oak trees. Oak trees are amazing hosts for mushrooms. They form these mycorrhizal relationships, meaning symbiotic relations.

I've heard about this. Yes. The trees and the mushrooms talk to each other. They do. You ever heard this? Yeah. No. So they form these mutualistic relationships where they're sharing resources and. helping each other sustain life. It's kind of like a good example of how we should be living in the world. It's like a partnership. Yeah. The oak tree and the mushroom. Exactly. The oak tree, yeah, I mean, you're tall, he's short, so… Well, I wouldn't say I'm short. Well, I mean, y- you know, relatively. From what I'm seeing here. You want a spot?

And, and slightly shuffle. I got one. Oh. Now, you don't have to come to me. You can go find your own. Okay. I mean, I was interested. Oh, now this is a white one. I found one that's bigger than the one that you're getting. Ooh. That is a thickie, I'll tell you that much, though. So this one, it looks white here, all white, but then under here. you're seeing that peach colored-. Oh. Yes … cap. So this- And that tells me I can eat it. Pretty much. This is a hot spot. Are these the same two, are these the same mushrooms, it's just. one goes up and one comes down? This one's younger. So when they start out, they're more like this, kind of like a little egg shaped.

Mm-hmm. And as their gills and spores are developing, they s- open up, they open up. I never knew that mushrooms changed that way. They sure do. As they get older, they- Yeah … they raise. So do they, do they taste different? The mature ones can, as they age, this species gets a little on the fishy side. Um- Oh, we don't want that. No. So this is good to eat? Yeah. You mind if we do a little taste? 'Cause it- Go for it. But how big of a bite? Um, I would do a- Oh … start with, start with a small one.

Oh, it is fishy. Y- you need to feed these mushrooms more pineapple. How do you know 100%? I know. Uh. Uh uh uh uh. Doesn't work that fast. Well, first of all, they smell different than the, the other one. Ta- ta- taste it. Taste that fish. It's definitely not as good as that one, but it's not overwhelming. I did take a smaller bite, though. There is no one way to look at a mushroom and see one, one feature. and be like, "Hey, that's a poisonous mushroom." You're gonna look at all.

I do not see the- Brush off the top … I do not see the universal veil. It's this part, the bottom part. Yeah, exactly. It's got, like, it, it's got a little… It's coming out of something. Mm-hmm. But your boy, if it had been a long night and you were hungry for some salad- Yeah. had a couple to drink. Yeah. Mm-hmm. You might hemlock yourself. Poison hemlock is one of the deadliest plants out there. It paralyzes you from the feet up.

Oh, God. By the time it gets to your diaphragm, which is the muscle that contracts. and expands your lungs- Yeah … you suffocate, but you are completely conscious. and aware during the entire process. It's not like the mushrooms where you've got a couple days to figure things out. This is gonna happen pretty quickly. You just walked up on this. Like, this, this is everywhere? This is everywhere. This is an invasive species and you can find… W- uh, uh, uh. Yeah, 'cause there it is, too. Yes, there it is right there. Don't touch it with the good bag. Now I gotta touch that bag. So we've got a, uh, good taco in front of, uh, Link that is totally edible that. he can enjoy, and then we've got the two bad tacos in front of me and Jess.

The reason why I know this is the deadly taco, and it is extremely deadly, is. because a, while we set it down, a bird doo-doo'd right here- Yeah … in, beside it in an attempt to let us know. We know which one's the- Put the bad one over there. No, I want the good one. This is the good one and I wanna eat it. The thing is is that for you they're both bad 'cause they both have t- tomato. Exactly. All right, Jess. Yes. They look absolutely beautiful though.

Uh, you know what? You grab the small one 'cause Link and I will end up splitting. I would- Okay … I would like to see you eat it first, and then I'm. gonna observe you for 12 hours. All right. Well, first of all, what would happen if we ate that one? The thing that's gonna get you first is gonna be the poison hemlock. Within probably 20-something minutes, um- So then you just. get poison oak on your dead body? And then, yeah, but you don't have to even really worry about the. poison oak, which is- And diarrhea? Yeah. Like, you'll, you'll be- Oh, that's good news. already done. Um, so, like, the death cap- But maybe your kidneys will shut down after you're dead.

I'm really hoping I have diarrhea after I die though. You will. There's so many ways to die here, even if you pick something off. The t- the tortilla is really good. I think it's excellent. See, you- I could actually believe that it's a fish taco. Yeah. Yeah. 'Cause the consistency is close, and those mushrooms wanna give you. a little bit of that fishy fish. Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. So Jess, we have learned a lot today just observing you, having you. teach us a few lessons about this. And you know what? I don't know if you saw it, but we foraged something earlier. We, we saw something that could be foraged, but we decided not to forage. it because we thought we would let you forage it as a gift to yourself. Okay.
