Training Wheels Are Evil
the way you learn how to ride a bicycle. is. wrong hi I'm Dan from Canada let's talk. about. [Music]. [Applause]. that good mythical morning this episode. is brought to you by royaltyfreemusic. library.com that's where we get pretty. much all of our background musics now. I'm alarmed at what you have said link.
because I can ride a bike just fine and. the way I learned how to ride a bike was. with training wheels training wheels. that's that's Training Wheels Are Evil. training wheels are bad people I've read. I've read an article cuz I I too learned. how to ride a bike with the training. wheel but you're not very good at riding. a bike you still have you still have. trouble staying on that's neither here. nor there but I read this article said. training wheels are bad Training Wheels. Are Evil you shouldn't use them you. shouldn't train your kids so there's. ramifications here here people if you.
still need to learn how to ride a bike. or I had a friend Matt pedon you know. Matt Matt didn't learn how to ride a. bike until after he got married I don't. know how this happened the guy's really. good at playing basketball got a great. sense of humor he's a good friend from. back in North Carolina shout out to Matt. but he never learned how to ride a bike. until after he got married at like age. 22 well I think it meant more at that. point though you know he just means more. when you do it later in life he and his. wife went to trying to help him out a. little bit he and his wife went to ochre. Coke and as you know when you go out on.
that island in the Outer Banks you. everyone rides beach cruisers and that's. where you learn how to ride a bike does. he know how to swim he's I I don't know. we can we can email him you should be. able to do both of those just as an. adult in general anyway the article said. you should also like mustard it was it. was almost like an epiphany in my mind. the way the article explained it's like. I should have already realized this. there's two things that you need to. learn when you learn how to ride a bike. one is pedaling but the other one is. Balan now you tell me which one's more. difficult uh pedaling.
balance balance obviously balance is. more difficult so why do we put our kids. and why did our parents subject us to a. bike that taught us how to Pedal but. didn't teach us how to balance in fact. it taught us how to not balance right. because when you when you're on a bike I. you know I don't want to go into the. physics of this but it's so. counterintuitive how to ride a bike if. you've never done it it's like speaking. an alien language with your body as. you're straddling something made mostly. of metal H that's going a little far but. okay if you're falling to the right turn.
to the right yeah your mind does not it. that goes against all logic that your. body it's counterintuitive my mind says. yes my body screaming no wow that's what. that's what's happening actually mind. and body are screaming no until you tell. your mind to scream yes are you saying. you want to see Christina agilera ride a. bike what is it I'm totally lost I'm an. innocent bystander here all I'm saying. is that you got to turn into got turn. into the fault so I'm reading this. article and they say you should teach.
your kids or kids should be taught to. ride bikes without training wheels. there's this thing called a balance bike. and it's made all out of wood and they. sell that in fancy toy stores so so. women who drive up in their Range Rovers. and they're eating a manual will say I. got to have one of those for my kids. they don't say to buy one of those. either I don't think those women eat the. manual I don't think they eat much at. all they say get a regular bike kick the. training wheels to the curb lower the. seat all the way down and remove move.
the pedals you can screw the pedals off. so then it becomes a balance bike that. you don't have to pay a lot of money for. and then you can reattach the pedals. once it's time to learn how to pedal and. then they just Glide so they're they're. sitting on the seat which is really low. but they can stand and just Glide and. you get up some speed yeah and then you. just pick your feet up and you're. learning to balance and then then you. just add the pedaling and it's just like. it's it's building it in the right order. I respect this technique and I wish that. I had learn this way because I learned. the way that you probably learned the. way that you learn and that was actually. out here in California the evil way when. I was a kid we lived in Thousand o.
California right down the road from us. mhm and my dad got me on the bike you. know that I had and he took the training. whees off one day I was like whoa what. what now you know there's two points of. contact now there's about to be several. points of contact when I fall in Rapid. success and he would just run with me. and then let me go down the sidewalk I. mean there's cars parked there and I. just kept busting he put me in jeans he. like got to wear jeans son put the jeans. on and then I would just and your dad. was John Wayne son I'm going to shoot. you if you don't put on the jeans.
partner Pilgrim you're going to ride. this here bicycle and I kind of got on. the sidewalk I kind of got it down but. the problem was is that he made me wear. jeans to learn the bike and so then he. would kind of just like go inside and. let me out there on my own and I'm going. down and I got going really fast and of. course I didn't really understand how. you stop I go down like seven or eight. houses just going down the crossing. everybody's driveway and then eventually. my jeans get caught in the chain cuz. that was before chain guards my my jeans. get caught in the chain and I fall down.
the bike is on top of me I'm like a. little 5-year-old kid out there and I. just start going. Dad. Mom I sat there and yelled you were. stuck your jeans were stuck stuck in the. I can't carry the bike around you were. pinned under a bike I was pinned for. like 15 minutes mom dad of course no. none of the Neighbors come out to help. the new kid from Georgia cuz you weird. Mom Dad eventually I sounded just like. that by the way and then so I mean this. was traumatic to if I had the balance.
bike that would have never happened when. I was I I learned how to ride a bike. with the training wheels and then I went. to Aunt T's house and she had this bike. with like a big banana seat and had a. handle on the back and she would run. with me and and she would let go with. the handle so the first time I learned. how to ride how to balance was going at. like the top speed that she could run. there was there was no Hill there was no. nothing like that and you know I feel. for parents having been one who taught. my kid how to ride a bike the only thing. more frustrating than teaching a kid to. ride a bike is putting lights on a.
Christmas tree oh I mean it is one of. the most frustrating things ever because. you can't explain it you just have to. experience it and then once I learned at. Nana and Papa's house it was this big. hill uh Street asphalt and I went down. there with my uh step brother at the. time Jason he was like three years older. he was a punk he had a big banana seat. we get down to the bottom of the hill. and then it turns to the right but we. have so much speed I start turning to. the right and he cuts right in front of. me and I'm thinking uh you need you.
should be going to the right the road. goes this way goes right off the road. into you know the Peebles had that pond. down there and I was like he's going to. go into the pond but what we didn't know. was that there was this. little line of string that was used as. like a border to keep people from. parking on the side of the street next. to the pond oh and he lays it down and. instead of getting clotheslined it comes. up and it grabs his ear did it rip it.
rip it off and then by the time I get. over there there is blood on his hand on. his face going down the whole side of. his body and he's saying mom dad just. like you and I go up to him and I'm like. oh my gosh his ear has been ripped off. by this cord that's pretty awesome and. it had only been like a the bottom of. his ear had been ripped off like he had. an elongated ear Lo he got more of an. ear Lo which is you know some women. appreciate that and that was that was. tragic and of course I guess he didn't. how a he didn't have a balanced bike I'm.
going blame it on that now okay I'm. taking trtic I I'm taking this to heart. cuz I've got two boys uh one can ride a. bike one is eight and one is three and. doesn't ride a bike yet he rides a. tricycle so I taught lock how to ride. the bike using what I call the gravity. method which kind of sounds like a a bad. birth control technique like we're using. the gravity method and that's why we. have eight children but what it really. is is when you go out onto a hill a. grassy Hill is what I suggest and I. would just run with him and then I would. let let him go and so if he if he fell.
and and I'm talking like a just a enough. slope to kind of keep him going yeah and. I would send him down this hill and he. would get it of course there was a tree. line at the end of the hill and during. the time was there a string on a no but. he ran right into the trees a couple. times but he's okay and he learned how. to balance the gravity method and then. you take them out onto a concrete or or. the street and then they replicate the. same thing and they go and they do the. gravity method out there and by the end. of it they've got the thing of course. you know this is you know I taught lock. how to ride the bike a few years ago and. you know helmet and shin pads we didn't.
have any of that stuff growing up it was. just like you had a pair of underwear on. and jeans of course in my family and. they just sort of Cent you out there and. who knows what would happen you didn't. even have shoes on half the time so so. hopefully but I'm going to teach. Shephard how to ride his bike using one. of these things they're expensive I'll. teach land no it's a regular bike D. don't get a balance bike buy a regular. bike that you he's going to learn take. the like get a Walmart bike and get the. pedals off take the pedals off wooden. yepy bikes one of those don't buy one of. those so see I think that what what. we've done is you know we've helped you.
in your relationship with the kids that. you're going to have one day or that the. kids that you do have and we've subsided. some frustration and opened up a world. to you balance bike how do we end this. episode trip to the barber okay so who. who Who's the barber uh I'll be the. barber. okay hey Mr Barber. um uh I'd like to how you doing link. good to see you want a lollipop I don't. really I don't really need much of a.
just a little trim today I don't want a. lollipop so what you're telling me is. you want a buzz all right no I had just. a little bit off the sides and the back. you know I like a little bit of a mullet. look but not too much all right no level. this is kind of a signature look I got. going here I like to think of it those. wings those wings that's communist only. communist have this kind of thing we're. going to go buzz cut no no. no.
