Tips for Avoiding Awkward Silences

like just totally practical things like. oh well be prepared with the things that. you want to talk about you know know you. know keep up with current events like. have a back pocket yeah conversation. literally pull it out of your back. pocket and unfold a sheet of paper and. read that's bad but just have it in the. back of your mind be like you know what. if this date gets a little awkward I'll. be like hey did you hear about that you. know that new squirrel they found you. know no what tell me about it apparently. it's a lot bigger than normal squirrels.

you making this up I'm making this up. you he really drew me in you see why I. allow me to say what not to you could. just make it up when you're in the when. you're experiencing an awkward silence. tell me what you think of this don't do. that thing where there you're in an. awkward silence and then it's like. awkward don't do that yep that's a bad. idea yeah I mean because it just it just. makes it worse you want to make it. better you don't want to make it worse. right right well you and beyond all the. Practical things there I think there are.

two real options here uh first thing is. you can just embrace it you know a lot. of times you can exert a lot of control. and a lot of power in a conversation or. a relationship when there's an awkward. silence and you just go with it you're. just just. like you got to maintain eye contact you. cannot lose eye contact you just got to. sit in the silence but the other thing. that I found to be very helpful is when. you sense there being an awkward silence. you just ask the question do you hear.

that this is good and then you can sit. in a awkward silence for an extended. period of time but it's not awkward. because you're both motivated you're. like and it gives it it at least. explains hey the reason why I wasn't. talking wasn't because I'm awkward I. actually heard something now it's on you. whether you actually heard it too so. they're either going to a think that. they're the awkward one or B that. they're the crazy one who's not hearing. it or probably see you're the crazy one. for hearing something that's not really. there.
