The Last Person to See Gravity

should you see a movie Just because. everybody tells you to let's talk about. [Music]. that good mythical morning okay this. past weekend I finally saw the movie. Gravity you finally saw gra you hadn't. seen. gravity and that is precisely what I. want to talk about is this. phenomenon of the collective pressure of.

the culture the culture telling you to. go see a movie and then finally seeing. it we talking about movie peer pressure. here movie peer pressure highly. controversial now let me start by seeing. a couple of. things as you know we are fathers we. have children uh that is a beautiful and. wonderful thing when it comes to seeing. movies when they first come out it's not. a real good thing for that.

now don't don't drag me under the bus. here I saw gravity like weeks ago dude. but that was a highly unusual occurrence. when you were like I saw gravity I was. like you really you already saw it you. mean you didn't wait for it to come out. on DVD or digitally um yes but and and. not only not only this was the extra. pressure this wasn't the have you seen. gravity you got to see gravity it was. the and you got to see it in the theater. and not just you got to see it in the. theater you got to see it in.

and not just that you got to see it in. IMAX 3D now it and not only that you got. to see it with your wife because if you. don't see it with your wife then she's. going to be like why did you see this. without me. because it could have been a special. thing we could have grown closer but. instead here you are watching gravity. without me I want a divorce.

[Laughter]. that's exactly what happened okay no. you're tooking to see gravity and your. marriage is better now getting no yeah. okay so anyway so we can't talk about. how great gravity was for like the next. eight minutes because I really want to. even though nobody cares right that's. the point but it is part of my story. okay okay but here's what here's how. went down okay so the movie's been out. for a month or whatever right and so. Jesse and I have been making this these. plans to go see it but you know you got. to get child.

and and you know and it was it's like. passing legislation child it was this. past weekend where we were actually out. uh on a triple date with another couple. you were there you remember this yes and. there was a late dinner but we were. still like we're going to call our. babysitter and say stay with the kids. we'll pay you more we're staying out. we're going to like the 11 o' movie. because this is the only window of time. that we can find to see this we go into. the theater there the movie is is you. know the previews are starting there's. three people in the movie and we sit. right in front of of them because it was.

stadium seating and they were in a. really good spot I'm a tall guy yes but. I got right in front of him CU that's a. good spot not right behind him no right. in front of. them and these guys are like so you guys. haven't seen this either that's the. first thing these guys behind us say I'm. like conscious there are still some. people on Earth who have not seen this. movie and here we are the five of us in. this huge theater about to watch this. movie you should have said no this is my. third time I'm watching it this time. only for shot composition.

now and I will say that the reason I. went to see it is because everyone. including you said you have to see this. and so you feel this pressure and you're. and so and I feel like part of it is I. don't want to feel like I'm missing out. but another thing is is like people are. like legitimately no you need to see. this and you need to see it in the. theater and let me say quickly without. going into a review of the movie I. absolutely love the movie it was one of. the best movies I've seen in a long time. I do believe that it has slipped into my. top 10 best movies of all time.

that's how moving of an experience it. was for me to watch this see you're. doing it absolutely loved it you're. applying pressure now to no one and. that's what happened I became a part of. the pressure when we went back before we. left uh we told our our our babysitter. that we might stay out and watch the. movie and she was like yeah yeah she was. like you haven't seen it no no she was. she hadn't seen it and she was like yeah. I've heard lots of good things about it. but I've had some friends who said it. was boring and uh and then I was like. okay you know but that was before I was. an advocate then I go see the movie I.

come back and I'm like your friends are. stupid this is the best movie ever you. should go see it right now so you became. a ninth nine-year-old yeah right exactly. I became the person that like you that. became got me to go watch it in the. first place and but see there are people. there's two different types of people. there are people who when they hear the. they feel the pressure they immediately. become contrarian and you know those. people who are like contrarians uh oh. yeah it kind of sucked like they know. that it's got really good reviews they. know everybody wants to see it and then. they watch and they're looking for a.

reason they didn't watch like no I'm not. going to see it either they like I'm not. going to see it CU everybody wants to. see it or they see it and they purposely. come up with a critical view of it. because they want to seem cool I'm going. to tell you right now I thought it was. awesome if everyone everyone thinks it's. awesome because most people have good. Jud judgment apparently well I think. that's the there's if you want to parse. people in another way it's the people. who are who want to see a movie first. and I think I'll call those the trend. setters the people who say I saw gravity. first I was the reason that it created.

all the buzz you know I was one of the. first reviews of novices on Rotten. Tomatoes kind of person and then you got. the people who for whatever excuse use. your kids whatever to say you know I'm. the last person to watch this movie so I. mean which is better the person to see. it first or the person to see it last I. think it's it's what what do you value. do you value having having bragging. rights or do you value only watching. movies that are really great you I I.

value watching movies that are really. great so I'm going to I want to make. sure that everything's good but there's. a risk in being that type of person and. that's that it will be spoiled for you. you know that you'll you'll you'll start. to hear things through the grape vine I. mean I started seeing articles and wired. and rolling stone and I was like if you. wait yeah um so there's that risk you. you got you have to make the choice here. and then the if you're one of the people. like us that Waits there's this mounting. pressure that now.

you feel like you have to like it right. I mean you you felt like well if I don't. like this something's wrong with me I'm. not normal if I don't like noral I'm not. normal and my wife going into it she was. like I got to be honest with you I'm not. excited about seeing this movie because. it's just about people in. space two people in space is not the. kind of movie that my wife is like all. excited about but I was like well it was. three people technically spoiler alert. everybody seen it.

man three people in space um but she she. loved it too I mean we we we bonded in. fact we are now planning a trip to space. together because that's how it was like. a man and a woman in space that one shot. where the stuff goes through the guy's. head you know I don't I think. everybody's seen it who's going to see. it I don't think that makes a break my. babysitter hadn't seen it she doesn't. watch the show does she no your show or.

then I would come into your. shot and we are the double. troubleshooters oh we're the let's try. that again and we are the double troubl. Shooters and we dug speaking Unison but. there would be a well speaking Unison. like yeah let's do that like we did with. song like we did with your um and we are. the double troubleshooters and we dug up. the PIP and found out that the pipes are. not.

so Jessie you know we're coming for you. and we have weapons we have like a. survival night gun in this hand and what. you take over and we're not just. anchor and. forers and we are been given Authority. from the new news station and the local. police police department to shoot the. gut face gut I'm shooting in the gut a't.
