The Awkward Double Date

In high school, we went on the most epic. double date ever. I'm Hun from Him City, Vietnam. Let's talk about that. [Applause]. Good mythical morning. the song on iTunes. It's never it it. never gets old. Well, it kind of has. gotten old to me. Oh, I don't listen to. it anymore. Yeah, but don't share that. with them. But it doesn't get old to. you, right? All right. We're still in. high school mode. Um, forgive us if. you're growing tired with that. Or if. you just happen to be tuning in and. where are we at? Well, we're in our old. French classroom. We're in North. Carolina. This is our where we went to. high school. Central High School is now. Coach Gage's history class. Thank you, Coach Gage, for letting us reminisce. about all of our high school memories in. here and thinking no one's in the room.

listening because it it would just add a. level of awkwardness. I think there. might be some people at the doors. listening. What are these boys up to? Yesterday we talked a little bit about. our uh exploits in the sports world. Today we're going to talk about um. exploits in the the world of the ladies. Ladies. Hello. ladies. Hello. Okay. Now, freshman year, I remember there being so many hopes. tacked on to moving into high school.

because and the chief hope was on the. fact that there are entire new pools of. women from other towns from other towns. that will now go to school with us that. we can date. We don't have to keep. dating in the same girl over and over. again like we would do, right? You know, we would just like trade off. Oh, you're. going with Leslie? Okay, I'll wait and. then I'll go with that. Oh, now you're. going with Amber and then we'll switch. off, right? I mean, that's that's But. high school presented new new. opportunities. At least that was the. hope. I And I remember um you know, you.

have to get used to the bells and the. common area. I went into the common area. and I remember somebody came up to me. and I can't remember who it was because. I was so memorized by the news. I was. told link Tabitha I'll just go ahead and. say her name, her full name. Sure. Can I. say that? Sure. Tabitha Norris likes. you. Tabitha Norris. I I knew of this. Tabitha Norris. She's very good-looking. Everybody knew about Tabitha Norris. And. here here's the key. She was a. sophomore. Whoa. She was a full year.

older than me. At least in Ouch. She was. a grade older. She could have been many. years older. I don't have a clue. But. you know, upper classman like me. What? Are you sure? And then they said, "Look." And I looked across the common. area and she was looking at me. Uhoh. And I was like, "Oh my gosh." Gosh. And. I was just struck with fear. Now, that's. how I reacted. That's not how I should. have reacted. And I'm going to teach my. son and my other son, both of them, to. be ready for things like this, to expect. things like this to happen and know how.

to react. I remember being afraid to go. up and talk to her and kind of I kind of. forced myself to do it and it was really. awkward. Now, you in stark contrast had. a had an entirely different approach. Yeah. And so, I I remember you you. telling me about Jamie. Yeah. another. upper classman actually one of Tabitha's. friends they were she was she was also. was a sophomore they were these two. girls that everybody wanted to date. whether you were a junior or senior. freshman whatever everybody wanted to. date them and I did have a different.

approach I I well first of all they. somebody didn't come up to you and say. hey Jamie like you I didn't wait for. that kind of thing I didn't wait but she. did I was gangly I mean she she didn't. like you well she didn't know she liked. me okay Exactly. That's exactly that was. that was your mentality. The reason why. she doesn't like me is because she. doesn't know I exist yet, right? Which. may have been true. Or it may have been, you know, this freshman dude who I guess. is on the basketball team. It wasn't. about Listen, it wasn't I mean, I looked.

like a I mean, I know I look like. a I look like a a spider of some. kind. I was like an insecttoid. Okay. Uh. but it wasn't about that. It was about. the fact that I knew that I wanted to. date her. Yes, he did. And I was told. this and I'm like, I'm going to make. this happen. And one of those same. situations at one of the breaks uh one. of those breaks, the 9:00 breaks, I. approached her and her friend Stephanie. Weberlow.

I don't think there's an R. I think it's. Weeble. Weeelo. I like Weeberlow better. Wee below. You still need to annunciate. it. Weeelo. Yes. Weeber. Okay. And long. story short is I basically just it's. three syllables that the most important. thing is that you get three different. syllables out of that. Okay. What I. ended up doing long story short is I. just sort of went headlong into this. into the situation and within two or. three days of communicating during the. break I had talked Jamie Brown through.

Stephanie. Oh yeah. I I use the. intermediary because that was just the. way you did it in high school. Yeah. She. was not. She was then my girlfriend and. we started dating. Now, we were. freshman. I I was I was beside myself. because I was like, "Hold on, high. school is going to be awesome because I. came to high school and all of a sudden. I'm dating what I believe and what most. other dudes believe to be like the top. girl in the whole school. I mean, how. did this happen? Very pretty. This is. going to be awesome. High school is. going to be great." Yeah. Yeah. And so I.

was like, I got to bring Link in on. this. And and you knew about Tabitha. because I knew that Tabitha liked you. and Tabitha was, you know, smoking also. And so well, she didn't smoke. She was. attractive, right? And so I not. attracted to smokers. So I came up with. this idea for the double date. Now, keep. in mind that we couldn't drive. We were. freshman. And these girls could have. been dating dudes who could drive, but. they were dating us who needed to be. driven around by my parents. Tabitha was. not dating me. She was still just. interested in me. We were having.

conversations. Yes. You were dating. Jamie. So then you set it up. Let's go. out on a date. Yeah. But let's let's. make it a double date with Link and. Tabitha. Yeah. Thank you. Yeah. Thank. you. You've You're You've never really. expressed gratitude for that. I just. did. Okay. So Rhett's parents were. driving the Dynasty and they both both. of your parents get in the two front. seats of of the dynasty. Come to my. house, pick me up. Now you and I are in. the back seats of the dynasty. They're. in the two front seats. We go to Jaime. Brown's house and Tabitha is there.

Yeah. And. then I'm like, "Oh, space is going to be. tight." I mean, this is just a sedan. This is not like an SUV. This is, you. know, this is 1993. So, we're talking. nobody had an SUV. They just had sedans. And so, four these four teenagers, the. two freshman boys, us, and the two. sophomore girls get into the back of. this thing. I remember Tabitha got in. the hormones. The hormones in the back. of that car were I'm sure my parents. joke needed to roll the window down. This is horrible. Yeah. I remember when.

you got in was like, "Oh, we were so we. were so close to each other." Well, we. were we were the bookends and the ladies. were next to each other, but we were we. were enjoying ourselves. I was like I. was like, "This is such a high pressure. situation." Okay. So, the I the goal is. my parents are going to drive us to the. Twin Plaza. That is a theater in Dunn. that's still there. Dun, North Carolina. There's two theaters there. And they. were showing Home Alone 2. And so, it's. like, "All right." And this wasn't like. a retro thing. That's just how old we. are. That's when it was out. Home Alone.

2 was in the theaters and we were going. to a double date with Jamie and Tabitha. in the back of the Dynasty. They were. going to drop us off. They weren't going. to watch the movie theater like two. seats in front. So we're talking from. Lilington to Dun. We're talking like a. 20minute ride. Yeah. On 4 421, Highway. 421. Now at the time, well, you know. what? I'm just going to let you pick it. up from here because well, you know, it's it's it's a long trip down a. two-lane road, 421. And I just remember. being so highrung and so nervous about.

the whole thing, sweating from every. orifice I had. and you don't know what to say because. sweat from an orphice. You can, but you. also you don't know what to say anyway. And then your parents are in the front. seat. And so we're going down the the. 421 and I remember thinking that we're. halfway there and nobody's talking like. no one's saying anything. No one's. saying nothing. And so I'm like, well, I. got to I got to break the tension. I got. to say something. So I. said, well, it sure will be nice when.

they make this road four. lanes. And my dad who sensed the comedy. in that situation was like, "Yep, Link, it sure will. Sure will be. nice. It sure will be nice." And then. there was no more. That was like a That. was the only thing that was said during. the trip. The whole trip. And then they. just dropped us off and we watched Home. Alone, too. Now, fast forward. I ended. up dating Jamie for a couple months. You. never You never sealed the deal with. Tabitha. I had no follow through.

Nerves, man. My nerves got the best. You. went on a date with her. She liked you. and then you never did anything after. that and I was too busy with Jamie. I. just said, "Listen, you know, that was. my one chance and I blew it. I blew it. talking about how many lanes the road. didn't have." But then a couple months. later, I break up with Jamie because. first, you know, she was a great girl. I. was like, you know, I I can't lose. I. mean, I freshman year within the first. week, I've got the best looking girl in. school. What else can happen? I'm going. to break up with her and just reset and. see what else happens. And that turned.

out to be a big mistake. That was a. mistake. I didn't date anyone else until. my junior year. But and and me on the. other hand, I never I never started the. relationship with Tabitha. And then in. in English class, Selena Bullard, who. was a freshman, but she was very pretty. and very outgoing. Uh, you know, she. asked me to theLL dance. Right. Right. As friends, I guess, or at least that's. what I thought. And um, so my mom takes. me to pick her up. I didn't realize you. were supposed to go to the dance. fashionably late. We went to theLL dance. 45 minutes early. That was not cool.

Which was weird. And then so we're. sitting there and by the time everybody. else shows up, like I felt like we had. had a quality date by that point. I. remember Jamie shows up. She had just. broken up. You had just broken up with. her days before. She went there stag. Yeah. Or alone. I didn't go at all. She. didn't have a date. You weren't even. there. And she started asking me to. dance. This is Jamie. Mhm. So I started. dancing with Jamie every single dance. I'm like, "Huh?" But you I remember good. enough for Rhett and good enough for me. you you came home and you told me that. she was like putting the moves on you.

like she wasn't just dancing with you. she was she was on you she was up on you. dancing and I was and I didn't know what. was happening. in any you know physically mentally. emotionally I was just but then I. remember looking around towards the end. of the dance and hate me ladies you know. I deserve it Selena was nowhere to be. found so I walk outside and just in time. to catch her getting in her mom's car. she and she turned around and she said I. called my mom to come get me and I said, "Why?" She said, "Because you're not. being my date." And I, you know, hate.

me, ladies. You know, I deserve it. But. see, the thing is, and then I went back. in and danced with Jamie some more. But. I I never I never I never dated her. either. Selena was a great girl. You. could have dated her. And then Jamie. didn't actually want to date you. Jamie. was just sort of just playing. She was. using you to get back at me. Yeah. And I. didn't even know it. And and so that. nothing was going to happen there. You. ignored your date. You had no gain. But. you know what? It doesn't matter. You're. married now. You know, you don't need. game. And you know what? It was for the. best. Having game is not a good thing.

You just need to have a good wife. End. of story. I love you, Christie. She's my. wife. Let's end this episode before we. say anything else that will make you not. like us. And uh spin the wheel of. mythicality. The invisible. I spun it. and then I stopped it. And then I spun. it. Let's see what it's going to land. on. Oh, it landed on. motorcyclists terrorize a small town. Okay. So, let's be going down. Hey, sure will be nice when they make. this road four lanes. Hey, hey, hey,

look at this exit here. It says it's uh. Littleton. That sounds like a small. town. Let's go in there. We could. terrorize. it. Oh, look at this. There's like a. little convenience store. Set it on. fire. Yeah. Oh, we can spin on it. Let's. run over some old people. Look, there's. some old people. I'm going to take this. baby. Hey, look. I took someone's baby. Oh, that's good. That's good. We could. we could raise it. Raise it as like the. secretary of the motorcycle club. And. look, there's a girl who I could take to.

the FLL dance, but then dance with. another girl. Her name terrorizer. Her. name is. Arizona. Think I'm out of gas.
