Jersey Mike’s vs Firehouse Subs | Food Feuds
- Who makes the superior sub, Jersey Mike's or Firehouse? - Let's talk about that. [Good Mythical Morning theme song]. - Good Mythical Morning. - There are so many sub sandwich chains out there, all claiming to have the freshest ingredients, the best bread, the most deliciously slippery deli meats. It's enough to make your head spin, and if you're a break dancer, it might even make your head spin upside down.
(Rhett sighing). - Mind blowing. Who can you trust? Which sub chain is really the most sublime? And what happens when you pit two. Food Feuds winners against each other? - [Link] Mmhmm. - It's time for Food Feuds. Jersey Mike's versus Firehouse. (bell dinging) (graphics whooshing). (smooth band music). - Okay, so. You know we love Jersey Mike's, and Jersey Mike's has won big on this show in Food Feuds. They beat Jimmy John's 75 to 43. They beat Subway 78 to 45. - Right. - And then Firehouse beat Subway 55 to 47.
So if you do that thing where you're like, a sports fan and you see like, "Well, this team beat this team by this much. and then this team beat this team.". - Yeah? - It feels like. Jersey Mike's is gonna win this, but I feel like we've got to get as objective. as we possibly can. We can't let them- - We are going to try. - Yes. - Starting with these Philly Cheesesteaks. - Oh, this is what I get. This is what I get. - So you got, you got the Jersey Mike's and this is your go-to order? - I usually get it with the chicken. 'cause I feel a little bit less naughty. - All right, so yours cost $12.49,
right? No, that's how much- - No, that's $11.69. for Mike's Famous Philly. - Mine costs $12.49 is a little, little bit more and they call it the. Steak and Cheese Melt. Let's start over here. - I just, I love the way they do it. They just do it right. - Shredded. I can already tell that. Firehouse is more chunky with their meats. - And... - [Link] Mmhmm? - Don't eat with.
your mouth full, Rhett. Talk with your mouth full. - Woo, that's good. - You do need to eat. with your mouth full. - Yeah, you do pretty much every time. - The way that they. fold the meat and the cheese and the peppers together, now... - It becomes one entity, which is beautiful. - We actually. recently went to Jersey Mike's together. - Yeah, we did. - We don't often do that. - But do you remember that cute couple beside us? - She got so tickled. - Because he ate something off of her plate. and then somehow it just gave her a laugh attack.
- And she had a laugh attack right there in Jersey Mike's. It was so sweet. - And died. It was so sweet how she died. - It was as good as the sub. I was eating. That I was willing to wait for. - [Link] Mmm. - The only thing I don't like about the hot subs. at Jersey Mike's is you do have to wait for 'em. You're over there enjoying your sub. - Yeah. - Of course I did catch up, surpass, and finish my sub before you did. I'm gonna come back to that. - The onions have a, the peppers have a sweetness. - [Rhett] Firehouse is pretty homemade feeling here. - They went light on the pepper-rigation.
- [Rhett] Hmm. Hmm. - Very cheesy. - It's very good. - A lot more cheese. - I don't like the- - There's a seasoning. on the meat that's like... - I know what you're sayin'. - It almost tastes garlicky. - I like it. Wow. - It requires a little bit more chew work.
I wish there were a few more peppers. - But you love doin' chew work. - No, I don't. I do it out of obligation. - Oh, really? - Yeah. - You've been chewin' so hard all these years. out of a sense of obligation? - 100%, my friend. - That's the saddest thing I've ever heard. - I don't want to choke. - Become like me. - My nana. - And chew a couple times. and swallow. Have I ever choked in front of you? - No, you haven't. - No. - See, at this point I would chew 18 more times. I'm just gonna try to swallow this.
- [Rhett] Mmhmm. - That's painful, dude. My mouth is not, this part of my mouth, what is that? Throat? - It's all mental. - It's not used to. boulders going down. All right. - It's all mental. because you know how like you, people are like you are afraid to hold their breath. 'cause you think you're gonna die? Same thing with chewin' and swallowin'. - All right, so we're gonna accumulate these scores. I'm gonna start over here. - I'm gonna keep eating it. - This is... - It's so good. - This is just so great. The bread is softer than the-.
- The bread is better, - They toasted their bread. - The meat is better, and the combination of the accoutrement. - The thin, there's, there's more of everything. except for chunks of meat. It's more slicey. On a scale of one to 10, I'm gonna give this... Woo, I got to give it a nine. - I'm gonna give it a nine. I want to give it a ten, but I don't want to just bury. Firehouse right from the beginning. - I just don't... I think the ingredients are tip top. - What don't you appreciate about it? - The chunky hunkiness of it.
And there's just not as much because of that. It doesn't mix into one entity as well. - I'm pretty dang impressed. I'm gonna give it a seven. - That's where I'm goin', seven. (graphics whooshing) (bell dinging). (smooth band music). - Okay, over here I've got the Jersey Mike's. Original Italian for $11.65. - [Link] And I've got the Firehouse Substation Italian. for $9.99. - Okay, so a little bit cheaper. Now, Link, I will draw attention to the fact that. you recently had Firehouse versus Jimmy John's.
- Okay? - And you've talked so much crap about Jimmy John's. and the way that they organize their meats. - Yeah. Well- - But you said. that Jimmy John's was. better than that. - Their bread is tougher. - So you said the thing that with the, the foldy that you hate was better than that? - Well, it must have been some other reason. Old- I, I stand by old me. - This is what you got the other day. when we were together, wasn't it? - No, I get the Club Sub. - And the difference is? - Mike's way, no tomato. - Oh, it doesn't have the Italian meats on it. - Yeah, but this right. I mean- - If I'm gonna get a cold sub,
this is the one I'm gonna get. - The default to the oil and vinegar and salt and pepper. and oregano is just so important. So important to me. - Mmm, I love those, is it pepperoni? What is it? - It's the perfect height. - What do we got? - The right amount. of generous meat. - Oh, so we got... Prosciuttini? Prosciuttini?
Prosciuttini? Ham. - It's good. - Capocollo? How, how do you, how do you- - Cap-qwa, capaqwalo. - Pepperoni? How do you say these words? - Capaqwalo. - I'm not Italian, I just eat it. - [Crew Member] Just use an Italian accent. - Okay, right. - I've been re-watching the Sopranos for the first time. (crew laughing). - That's not re-watching. - Nope. - And me too. Hmm. - [Link] Mmm. - Shepherd calls it the Sa-prawn-ohs. He's like, "Let's watch The Sa-prawn-ohs.". And I'm like, well, they do say that on the show.
That's really good. And the bread, man. They bring the bread. - Firehouse likes to, there's just more bread. It's harder. - I think it's better insulating against a fire. - Hah. - Hah, thanks. - Started... - Hah. - It was founded by two firefighters in 1994, whereas Jersey Mike's has been around since 1956. - [Rhett] Mmm. - Look at that, look at those little peppers.
That's a little zinger about to happen. - I don't dislike this. There's something in there that's a little sweet. Is it the bread? Is the bread sweet? - Just taste the bread and tell me. Hmm. That's really good. - It's, I mean, they're good. - What is, where is that sweetness hiding? Is it in the spread? (Links lips smacking). Nope.
- It's not the bread. - It's not the spread. Maybe it's these peppers. - Does anybody know? - Why would they know? - [Crew Member] Sweetness? - Yeah. - I'm tryin' to isolate it and find that sweetness, but... it is in there. - Hmm. I don't dislike it. - It's in the spread. - It's in the spread. - [Crew Member] That's their new herb oil. and vinegar, perhaps? - Perhaps.
- [Crew Member] That's... That's all I'm seeing. - I mean, we don't need to know, we just need to know that it is. That's what we've done. - I'm having a little bit of a moment here. - A positive moment? - Am I gonna say that. I think that Firehouse is better? - There's less meat. There's more bread. for fire hose. Fire... (laughs) (crew laughing). - That's what they should've called it. - It does... The Jersey Mike's, it still comes together as one thing.
- [Rhett] Hmm... - I mean, I like the generous portions of the meat, but it's still not as much as Mike. - Okay, these are both very good subs. I'm gonna give the Jersey Mike's an eight, and I'm gonna give the Firehouse an eight. I'm double eightin' it. - Okay? - Yeah. - So you are negating yourself? - I just thought they were both really good. - I'm gonna go for eight over here. (bell dinging).
I'm going for seven over here. It's just, it doesn't quite have it. - Okay. - It doesn't quite literally. come together as much. - But still, pretty close. (graphics whooshing) (bell dinging). (smooth band music). - Tuna subs. I got the Tuna Salad Sub for $12.25 over here. - [Rhett] And I have the Jersey Mike's Tuna Fish Sub. for $11.50, $11.15. - So it's cheaper there. So they kind of go back and forth in who's cheaper. - Interesting about that. - They also put the word fish in it,
which I don't think they should've done that. - Right, because we already know. What is it? It's not tuna chicken. - You want to start over here this time? I just feel like- - Yeah, let's mix it up. - I feel like we need to see this happen. in a different order. I'm gonna take a little look under the hood. Okay... That feels, - [Rhett] Hmm. - that feels nice. - I'm not disappointed.
I'm not happy. The only time I eat a tuna sub is if. somebody else orders a bunch of subs. - And then takes. all the ones you want? - And everything else is gone. (Link laughing). - Yeah, it's not bad, but yeah, I would just... I never got a hankering to order it. I kind of evaluate my, my tuna based on like, the amount of like, mushy goodness of like, mayo and stuff in there. - The tuna fish is very good in this one. - It's not overly fishy.
- And it's got a good mayonnaise ratio. It also has some really strong. relish coming through that I tasted. - [Link] Mmhmm. - So, we'll see how Mike stacks up. - Look at how much more moist this seems though. - [Rhett] It seems. simultaneously more moist, - [Link] A lot more mayo. - but also less soggy, which is interesting.
- It's missing that. - [Rhett] Hmm. - relish panache. - There's a pepperiness to it though. Is there not? - Mmhmm. Like a black pepper. - [Rhett] Mmhmm. - Do you want black pepper. or do you want panache? Panache? You know what I'm tryin' to say? - Soprano, sa-prawn-oh. You know, I'll take either one. The tuna fish is not as good. - It's even less...
Fishy. - This is really good. It's less fishy, but it kind of feels like-. - More mayo-y. - This is not consistent with what we've said before. This tuna fish sub did really well in previous rounds. I try not to look at that information, I don't want to be influenced, but. - And I think Jersey Mike's has been a little bit more. expensive until this round. Maybe they know their tuna fish sub is not as good. - Comin' back to that? - Yeah. - So flavorful. - Keeps gettin' better, yeah. - What is happening, Firehouse?
- We're relishing the moment. I think it really comes down to. whatever that relish is in there. - I'm starting with Firehouse this time. For a tuna sub? - Yep. - That's a nine. - I'm gonna give it a seven. - Okay. - But 'cause I'm kind of still going on the subscale. - You don't want to overweight tuna. - Yeah, and you just did it. - I'm gonna give it an eight. - Well, that's still generous. - I changed it.
I'm just, well, I'm not, I'm just bein' less crazy. Eight. - Okay. For this one, I'm gonna go... four. There's not anything redeeming about it. I'm not gonna remember it, I'm not gonna go for it again. What did I give this? A seven? - You did. - Okay, I'm gonna have to stick with that. - I didn't dislike this, but I'm gonna give it a... I'm gonna give it six 'cause I do like it, but I just didn't know how good that was gonna be.
So eight and six. - Okay. (graphics whooshing) (bell dinging). (smooth band music). - Little dessert break. We've got the chocolate chip cookie from Jersey Mike's $1.25. and the brownie, $2.95. - All right, and my chocolate chip cookie, $1.79, and then my brownie, $2.99. - Now starting with the cookie, we noticed that this cookie was pretty cooked. and this cookie was not as cooked. - Yeah. - So we do have the backups here. that are the prepackaged ones, and we just want to show you that this, at least around here, is how they consistently do this.
They're cookin' 'em longer over at Jersey Mike's. - Mmhmm. So let's do the cookie. - Somebody doesn't like that. - I didn't realize. Okay, so there you go. Let's start with the cookie cookie. It's still very soft, there's nothin' hard about it. Mmm. - This would be like... - Eh. - The choice to have dessert, I would feel.
like I'd done myself a disservice. - Yep. - 'Cause when you get to be this age. and you do make the choice to do dessert, like, there are consequences. - Yeah, you got to really- - You feel it. - You got to really be happy. - And you want it to be. an enjoyable experience. - And look it, this looks exactly how. I want a chocolate chip cookie to look. If I saw this, then I would be tryin' to buy it. - And I do like the chocolate chip ratio here. Mmm. That's a good cookie. - So much better.
We're only weighing this entire round. half as much as the other ones. We're scoring them on, cumulatively on a scale of one to five. Let's go back to the brownie. The brownies look identical. - They might be from the same place. - [Link] I'm just gonna break this off and take it. - Okay. - Fudgy and cakey. - They're bringing more to the brownie at Jersey Mike's. Hmm. - It's the most cakey yet also fudgy brownie I've ever had.
A perfect balance of the two. - I like that. - If I had to choose, I'd just be going for a fudgy brownie. Definitely not a cakey brownie. So, I think you're halfway there, Mike. What about fire hose? And yes, that is what I'm gonna call them from now on. - Very similar. Hmm. But not as tasty. Firehouse not as tasty, but near same consistency. - Really?
- [Rhett] Mmhmm. - They're almost exactly the same to me. I'm gonna reward the cookie. in my voting on a scale of one to five. I'm in... I'm gonna give it a four. - What are you givin' a four? - What? The whole thing? - Firehouse? - Yeah, Firehouse.
- I'm gonna agree with you on that. Four. And then I'm actually gonna go... I want to go to a two because of the cookie, but I actually did like the brownie more, so I'm going to a three. for Jersey Mike's dessert. - I'm gonna, I'm gonna stick with my guns and give it a two. - Okay, all right. This has gotten interesting. (transition whooshing) You can now watch. all five Good Mythical Evening Live Recordings. exclusively on The Mythical Society. - If you dare. Okay, we're not keeping up with the score. We know that they're relatively close, but we're not letting the score influence. the way that we enter this. last round, okay? - Nope. - Over here, I've got Jersey Mike's. Bacon Ranch Chicken Cheesesteak for $11.95. - [Link] Versus Fire Hose Chicken and Cheddar Rancher. for $10.59. - Now, I will say one of the differences here is.
that Jersey Mike's has white American cheese on it, that has cheddar cheese. And we're not gonna let the fact. that we are white Americans influence us, okay? - Okay? We won't. Look at, where- I'm trying to look at what the, the chicken is kind of, it's shredded. versus- - [Rhett] Yeah, it's like a. cheesesteak. - Versus over here, it's. slices of chicken. Looky there. So this one looks better, but as in round one,
this has become just an entity. - I like the... Because I get the cheesesteak, the chicken cheesesteak. So the chicken has been done in the same way. that I typically like - [Link] Mmhmm. - at Jersey Mike's. I'm not a big bacon ranch guy, believe it or not. Like, I'm not like... That's not something I would choose. I'm enjoying it in this moment. - I don't think I'd choose it either because them. the bacon and the ranch kind of make it where. I forget about the chicken entirely.
- Yeah, I mean, I can't really... I have nothing bad to say about it. The bacon is good. The bread, of course, is good. - [Link] The chicken is just not as good as the steak. - Clearly. - I know, you're just tryin' to be a good boy. when you get it. - I'm just tryin' to be. a good boy. - Let's go over here. - [Rhett] Have you noticed the lines that Firehouse. puts in the top of their bread? - [Link] Yep, that's so that. the firetruck knows which way to go. - [Rhett] Okay, all right. - All right, so, hmm. They've got onions.
Long pieces of chicken. - I'm gonna say something, and that is something about this chicken has. moved into like, Subway territory. - Uh-oh. - I'm sorry. But something about this sliced chicken. that feels like it was just sitting in a bin somewhere. - Yeah. - Now. - Versus, when I pull this stuff apart, it's just-.
- I'm not saying it was. - Every single little piece of chicken. over here in Jersey Mike's world. is coated in cheese. - But you know the taste that that chicken. that's been like grilled and then sliced. and then left somewhere? - Yeah. - You're right, I agree. - That's the taste. that's happenin' there and it really, it's ruin- Like, I dislike that sub. I don't want another bite. - I get, and, and I think when you're goin' for. a Philly style cheesesteak, it's important to me. that everything's like, chopped together,
not assembled on the bread. - And I'm not just saying that. - Every bite - Because I know. it's Jersey Mike's. I know y'all wanted. to do these blindfolded, - delivers. - but we would know the difference. - This stuff right here, oh my gosh, it's just... Mmm, it's just so... - Now I'm not gonna give it. a ten or anything - Good. - because it's still a bacon ranch and I'm not... I am probably about to finish it, but. (crew laughing). - Close that up. Forget that ever happened.
- I'm gonna give the Jersey Mike's a seven. because it's still not my thing, really. - I'm fine with that. You know what? I'll also give it a seven. But over here, we're about to deliver some punitive damage. - You can't do that with the chicken, - It's just not-. - fire hose. - Once you have this, you're never gonna want this. I'm gonna give it... Okay, I'll be generous and give it a three. - I'm on either two or three here,
and I don't know how impactful. that's gonna be to our overall thing, but... - Come on, man. Go for it. - I, you know what? You often do that - Go for it. - and I hold back. Now that you didn't hold back, I'm gonna give this a two. I'm sorry. - Nope, don't apologize. Don't you apologize. - I was offended. by that chicken. - He's not actually sorry. - Givin' it a two. - So what's the results? - [Rhett] Jersey Mike's takes it 63 to 57. That was not a blowout. - [Link] Wow. - [Rhett] It was hanging in. the balance there. - That was so close. - Firehouse actually had. the lead heading into the end there.
But that chicken sandwich. - Oh, and they went with. the chicken, the chicken sunk 'em. - And you know what? I feel like we have done the world a service. You're welcome. Congratulations to Jersey Mike's. You are officially the superb hero. and have won a chance to sponsor a future GMM episode. - Take us up on that. - Come on. - Thanks for being your Mythical Best. - You know what time it is. - Hi, I'm Josh. - And I'm Brie.
