Is This Art?
is this this or this art let's talk. about that. a good mythical morning thank you for. joining us today today we're going to. get our artsy fartsy on you. I'm not gonna fartsy on you artsy fartsy. that's when we talk about C on anybody. talk about Fancy works of art okay. here's what's in store for all of us. we've got pictures of things which are.
purpited to be art I think purported. purported to be art. farts. boy the from the blowhole potty humor I. don't know why not be Artful why does it. always come back to farts with you and. we're gonna look at these things and we. are going to discuss uh whether there. really are and we welcome you into the. discussion via the comments below or via.
um telethopy. wow to pelity. telepathy just move on that is what I. said right telepathy. what's your definition of art right. I have thought about do you have a work. you have a working definition of art. it's a working it's a work in progress. uh but I believe that art is something. that has purpose it is intentional in. other words it had it was purported. it had it had intention behind it and it.
uh Sparks some kind of reaction from. people. well that that's and it's obviously. something that's created by a human well. it could be created by an animal. but it's something that has purpose and. intention behind it that that elicits. every and a reaction from one of the. five senses. or more than one of the five senses I. think my definition revolves. um more around an artist wanting to.
express themselves whether whether. there's so maybe that's the same thing. you're saying Expressions as they have a. purpose there's a there's a there's. something they want to communicate there. was intention it wasn't accidental I'm. saying maybe maybe maybe they don't have. to communicate anything maybe just need. they just need to express themselves and. as I have demonstrated many times I. express myself often I have no clue what. it means yeah and you're not it's not. very Artful let's go through. um some of these pictures and discuss. is this art first one this one is titled.
Fountain by Marcel Duchamp he brought. the urinal this urinal into his Studio. reoriented it to a position 90 degrees. of what it's normally it's on its back. and he wrote on it r period mutt 1917. the worker was regarded by some art. historians and theorists of the. avant-garde such as Peter. as a major landmark in 20th century art. you tell me when you said when you saw.
this urinal on its side did you think. wow this is a major landmark in 20th. century art well first of all just side. note this is something that you could. easily see at a plumber's uh like. Warehouse you know in the year. 1917 this would be a urinal that had. been set aside for Robert Mutt and you. know and it's just like well of course I. store it on its side it's not installed. yet and I think the fact that we are now. having a conversation about what it. actually means. reinforces the fact that yes indeed it.
is Art no don't do this to me okay. right this is not art this is a urinal. that's been laid down and somebody. scribbled something on it hold on you're. not playing a trick on me it was an. actual piece of art right yes this is an. actual piece of art it isn't from a. warehouse It's a famously frivolous. piece of art is it good art I don't. think so but uh keep show me some other. stuff because I don't I don't think it's. I could have done this here's the second. piece Concierto spazzali a test by Lucio.
Fontana it's like a red painting but it. has five scratches in it like little. scratches through it like Wolverine got. hold of it it's like I hate this yeah. yeah now see there you go started a. conversation that's all I'm saying you. think this is Art it's five scratches by. the technical definition of art that I. have given yes it is Art should it have. sold for 1.5 million no he's shooting. himself at 1.5 million but it did that. person is a sucker who bought that thing.
but that doesn't mean it's not art it. just means that you should have paid 1.5. million dollars. because but I could say because listen I. could go out in the backyard I could. paint a canvas red and then get. Wolverine to come scratch it or just. scratch it myself and say Wolverine did. it you're not going to pay you're going. to pay like 1.5 dollars for that. but yeah because it's not art it's just. you scratching on a on a piece of paper. but somebody thinks that it's art and. that kind of makes it art I think if you.
can talk about something in a fanciful. way people think it's hard but that. doesn't make it art like I found this. quote the ACT this act of scratching the. paper challenged the entire history of. Western easel painting and led him to. the understanding that painting is no. longer about illusion contained within. the dimensions of a canvas but a complex. blend of form color architectural space. gesture and light the gesture was. approaching the canvas with a razor. blade and cutting it. it's not much of a gesture next exhibit. Untitled by side twombly it's scribbles.
is this art if I met the artist and he. told me what this meant I would just. have to be like dude I'm sorry it's. that's not what it means it's it's. scribbly and he didn't sold for how much. hey 2.3 million dollars he didn't even. take the time to title it how can it be. art if it's if it doesn't even have a. title it is scribbles he scribbled and. he was and he himself knew you know what. this is just scribbles I'm not even. going to come up with a title for this. one. I think this he was testing he was. testing a pencil 2.3 million dollars to.
test a blue shade of pencil yeah well. still working. another. synticulo currently at the LACMA we can. go see this when it's just down the road. Platinum glazed ceramic characters a. pile of characters is this art I'm on. the fence with this one I think that he. could making if he made the letters or. she made the letters well that takes. some artisanship I could not have done. that that falls into my definition of I. it has to be something that I can't do. not something that I just didn't do I.
don't know if you could scribble like. that guy I can't pretty intense I can't. make letters but I could put them in a. pile what about this one levitated Mass. also at the LACMA now okay of everything. that has happened so far that you've. shown me this is the most artistic. because I would go out there and I would. start asking all kinds of questions like. how did they get this up there like what. was the machine that made it happen this. took like a concerted effort from. multiple people and I'm thinking about. physics and I'm thinking about geometry. to me this is more it's just again I go.
back to the thing that it's a feat to. get a boulder up there but this is a. feat of engineering not Artistry no it's. all art because there's purpose behind. it and it causes there to be some. reaction the question is. is it the kind of art that is different. from something that your kid would have. done that my kids could have done the. scribbles I'm not paying 1.5 million for. the scribbles I'm not paying anything. from the scribbles I'm putting it on the. refrigerator and then it slowly decaying. speaking of kid on a refrigerator. that's dog in uh French John Miro.
estimated two to three million dollar. price tag on this I guess that's a dog. looking at a odd a black rock no I think. I think it's a cat either he's about to. go on it's a man a cat or a dog. I don't know I'm not the one who knows. about this stuff you're the Art Expert. well we both took French. I think this means that we have no. grounds to judge art. finally blood red Mirror by Gerhard. Richter this is a mirror painted red 1.1.
million dollars this is ridiculous this. kind of reminds me when my when I was a. kid my dad had a friend who was getting. into painting and he gave my dad a. little small painting and he called it. red square and it was a green painting. with a red square in the middle that got. a lot of laughs at the McLaughlin. household I don't know if that guy. watches the watches the show maybe it. was a comedy piece but we'd be like yeah. that's a lot like the Red Square which. was our way of saying that this is not. really art and again I realized my.
technical definition of art lets a lot. of things in the door but there are some. things that should not be celebrated a. red square on a green square should not. be celebrated as art and a painted. mirror should not be celebrated as art. you know weigh in in the comments below. you know what time it is hello I'm Jared. Selleck from Panama City Beach Florida. oh would you look at that it's time to. spin the wheel of mythicality. submit your ideas for the wheel of. mythicality and we will end the episode. with them uh Good Mythical More right.
after this I got some more things that. are bad art that I want to show you we. can talk about that in Good Mythical. More click through for that all right. okay it might be better than what you've. already seen link has extreme mood. swings you know what I have been so. moved by this art that I've been looking. at that I just want to celebrate I want. to create a party and then I want to. kill you because you ticked me off I'm. so angry at you.
I don't even know why. I think you've been. I think it's the art I just feel so good. about getting that off my chest so happy. right now there's a red mirror that you. get so happy because I hate you. he found piece of art that someone had. thrown away so he made a whole museum. based around the fact that people are. getting their art thrown away because. it's bad.
