Extreme Smelling Bee Challenge
Spelling stinks. Let's talk about that. Good Mythical Summer. School's been out for summer, but you know what's never out? Learning. Yes. Never stop learning, kids. Especially once you've hit those mind slowing mid forties. Yeah, you gotta keep the brain agile. But what's the best way to do that? How about. a spelling bee? Or better yet, a.
smelling bee. That's right. After a two and a half year hiatus, the signature GMM game, where all smell breaks loose, has returned. And not only that, but the stakes in today's smelling bee are greater than ever because. this is the culmination of our summer long charity competition. I smell that. It's time for. The Fifth Kinda Sorta Annual Burbank Invitational Smelling Bee.
Welcome to the Odor-torium. Okay, boys, today you're going to take turns smelling smells at the scent bar. If you guess a smell correctly, the first letter of that smell goes up on the board. After you've done your smelling, you will try and guess the full word. If you guess correctly, the real life version of that word will be dumped on the other guy. But if you guess incorrectly, it gets dumped on you. You have two standard smelling bee lifelines. You may ask for the origin of a smell,
or ask for the smell to be used in a sentence. Just like a spelling bee. Each lifeline. may only be used once, though, throughout the game. And as for today's charity prize, for one final twist, today is not a winner take all. In fact, every round in this game is worth three thousand, five hundred dollars, for a total of fourteen thousand dollars on the line. And as a reminder,
Rhett has thus far earned a very impressive forty-nine thousand. five hundred and fifty dollars for Save the Children. And Link has earned eleven thousand four hundred and fifty. dollars for Inner-City Arts. All right, get down on it. That's strong. He's going back in. He seemed to. like it. Boy, it's so familiar. This, I hate.
I hate this game. Because you can smell it and you're like, oh, I know what that is. But my brain. Drives you wild. Can't make the connection. What is it? It's like. Oh, I'll tell you, but then I'm gonna. You automatically get stuff dumped. I'm moving on. I don't even have a guess. You don't even have a guess? Well, what are you smelling, like? A cleaner. Okay. And I know that's not it. Oh, but there's also. It's a food. It's a food. that has oregano in it. That's why I was you know, there's that, you can, you know how sometimes you get like the natural cleaners and.
you feel better about yourself? Yeah? And they'll, like, have oregano. in them. Maybe it's just oregano oil. Maybe it's just oregano oil. You know what? I'm not gonna get any better than that. I'm gonna say oregano. That's correct. Hey! Look, you were gonna move on, and I'm the one who got you to come back, man. Remember that. Okay. He's sniffing the second.
Well, he's sniffing the third and fourth straw, which is the second. I kind of like this. Again. Cleaner. I know what this is. It is a, it is a type of vinegar. I'm going to go specific as. I think it's apple cider vinegar, but. I'm just going to say vinegar. I am going to require that you be more specific. Okay. Apple cider vinegar. Yes! Yeah!
You still hate this game? Buies Creek Middle, up! Hey, I, hey, I've never started this hot. But you know what? I'm in fifth grade now. He's moved on to the. fifth and sixth straw, which is the third item. At first, I wanted to say parmesan. I just feel, I just feel like my nose is working in a different way.
I think it's toast. Final answer? Yes. Yes. That's right. Yes. Yes. Buies Creek Middle! Oh, my gosh. I wonder, if whatever this is, starts with an S. Buies Creek Middle!
Link you get. Hey, you better get them suspenders loosened up. Oh, that's not suspenders. It's just a sign. Okay. Okay. Oh, that's also familiar. You want a hint? Smoke. Come on over.
Spell it. Oats. O-A-T-S. Oats. Rice and beans. Rice and beans?
Rice and beans. Rice and beans. Rice and beans. What do you mean rice and beans? It's oats, you. doofus. Oh, it's oats. Could be worse. Yeah, it's gonna get way worse. All right. Smell the first item.
Oh, what is that? Yes. That's how it works. It's crazy. What place did you go to? I had. oregano oil at my house. and that's why I got that first one. It was a huge, huge help. What? Do you have this at your house? I don't know. I don't know what your family likes. It's. Is it piney or minty? No. It's, it's like a candy.
There's a candy. I'm smelling it. There's a. candy that I'm smelling. I thought you might get this. I can taste it, and I don't like it. I'm like, oh, I don't want. I don't want to taste that anymore. I think I've sucked all of the scent out of the bottle. Now, there's no more. Maybe come back to that one. I have nothing. You can come back to it. Don't guess something yet. Come back to it. Going in with the second one. Fishy ocean.
Could be sardines, could be anything from the sea. Tuna, sardine. I mean, how could I get more specific? You have to say the thing that it is. Well, it's the second. letter of four. I gotta come back to that one, too. But. you know what you're trying to do with the second one. Yeah, it could. If it's. You're trying to get. It could be the S for sardine, it could be the T for tuna.
It could be. something like that. That's almost like a pleasant bubble gum. Okay. It smells exactly like grape gum. And those both start with a G. Can I just guess the letter G? Well, I don't make the rules. I think you have to. But I couldn't guess a flavor, because that wouldn't work. Guess what you said.
Go with your instincts. Gum. Go with your other instinct. Grape. Grapes. Give it to him. Okay, I have a sympathy G. All right. Okay. Okay. What word has a G in the third? You could be about to completely. unlock this.
That's how this game works. Here I go. Seems desperate right now, but you make one more connection, and I think. Aromatic. Really interesting. It's that cleaner kind of a smell. It's got that. Not lemony, but. after a G, like. Like. I feel like I can know. I think you're. Let's go back to the first two. Let's go back to the first one. I think you're closest there.
I think it'll help you. Yeah, I agree. You really need to. You really need to access. Egg. Egg. I just said egg. It could be eggs. I heard myself say what could be. Egg. Egg. Egg. Is this a G? Egg. I just said eggs. What's a G word. for?
Cause this would be E-G-S. Okay, go back to the first one. Because you're not. You're. Yeah, let's drop that one. Yeah. If you get this, I think you'll figure it out. I know what it is. But I can't just get. I can't. I can't lead you too hard here. Because I'd rather not. get this on my body right now. Oh, gosh. It's a sauce.
I can lead you a little bit because I feel bad for Inner-City Arts. So. you said when you smelled it before, you said it was something you didn't like, and that's the right route to go down. It's in the bank of things that Link doesn't like. And Link's bank is. But it's a big bank. Well. I mean, it could be. The bank for Inner-City Arts is not that big.
Olives. It's not. Gay fish. Wait, you're. You're panicking. You're panicking. You're panicking. Let's take a moment. Let's take a moment. It's not gay fish. What is that? I don't know. I don't know. I can't think. I bet you when I get the origin, that's gonna do it for me.
Okay. Okay. All right. He's committed. You're going for the origin. I would like the origin. Okay. The origin of this word is. the grocery store. The grocery store. So it's an Italian. food. It's. Well, you get it in the grocery store and. it's Italian, and it could be poured on me at any moment.
Or poured on you. Come on, come on. Come on. Come on, Link. Come on, Link. You can do this. Oh, come on. A. sauce. Spaghetti. Sauce? A certain type of sauce. R-A-G-U. Ragu.
What is Ragu? It's like a Chef Boyardee thing. I did it. Chef Boyardee. I did it, mom. Daddy. Yes. With all the help in the world. that I didn't utilize. Ragu, it was root beer, man. Root beer.
R. It was. I thought you would get the root beer. You want some embroidered camo to sport your Mythicality? Well, you've come to the right place. You guys are modeling great. We got the hat, we got the hoodie, and you can get some sweatpants. Look at all that. Hold on. Chase is there by himself. All right, Rhett, where can they get it? mythical.com. Get to sniffing.
Well, well. Let's see if his streak can continue. Speaking of streaks, several. drops of Ragu have gone down my butt crack. while I've been doing this promo about the. camo. Sniffy, sniffy. Look at his back. Good gracious. That is. That's that fruit punch stuff. It's like a Capri-Sun almost. It's a very specific fruit juice.
What is that? It's like white grape juice is what it smells like. But. I know I'm gonna have to get more specific or I'm gonna have to get, like, whatever fruit it is. correct, and so I'm gonna come back to it. Okay. He's going to come back to it. Oh, he's. He's. Oh, I like that. Oh, that's like. It's like what? It's like menthol. Oh, it cleared me out completely. It's just like menthol. But there are things that could also be like menthol.
Let's make a guess. Menthol? No. Move on. Why are you? What? Why are you being so. harsh? Well, no, I'm just telling you, move on. Well, then I gotta figure out what my backup idea is. Yeah, you can do that. It's something with menthol in it. Cigarettes?
Grass. No. Dang it. So it's. But it is a plant. It is a plant. Cilantro. You've already guessed. Oh, so I'm right. I can't say. That's a big smell.
It's kind of like. It got good. Toddlers have big feelings. You just got a big smell. Oh, it's got peanut butter in it. No, it doesn't. Interesting. Smells horrible. Smells horrible? Yeah, but good at the same time. It's like a food of sorts. Oh, it gave me a headache. I will say. There's no peanut butter in it. I can tell that now. There's a meat in it. It's meaty. Let me come back here to the first part.
Okay, we're down it. We're in. Man, that is a fruit. What fruit is it? Peaches. No. So now. you haven't guessed the last one. You can make a guess for the last one. It's not peaches? It's not peaches. Is it anything like peaches? Everything. I mean, you're a good guesser, I'll give you that. I know what it is. It starts with a P. I don't have to say it out loud.
Boy, that is so minty. So minty. It's not grass. I think the one you can get. is the second one. You think so? Yep. Altoids. What is it? It has, like, a mothball. What did you guess that that was? Menthol. We need a final guess.
Did I guess the last one? Beef stroganoff. Nope. Gotta move over. I will remember this. Okay, there's only one lifeline left. I want that one. Whatever that is. In a sentence. Yeah. Ask politely. Can I have that word using a sentence? Children. tend to hate. this word. But they should really give it a chance.
Children tend. to hate. this word, but they should really. give it a chance? Peas. P-E-A-S. Yes! My sentence. Yes! Too good. Oh, they're so green. Oh, they're. They're so green.
What was that? Where is everybody? Where did everybody go? Eucalyptus. Eucalyptus, man. Yeah, of course. Menthol, eucalyptus, it cleans you out. Soy sauce. Yes. Like meaty. Arugula. Yes. Not a chance. Very difficult thing. You look great. I'm ready to smell. Final round. It's cold. Pizza.
Final answer? It could be sausage. Yeah, pizza. It smelled just like pizza. Well, there's a reason for that. Is that you I'm smelling? There's a reason for that. Well, I do have Ragu on. I am wearing Ragu. Okay. By. What is that thing that's in sausage? Ooh. Smells like a department store.
Nice and fresh. Brendle's? Marshalls? Sky City. Sky City. It's like, smells like clean. rubber. Nordstrom Rack. Dang, nabbit. I can't. So, you've come up with clean rubber? It's not clean rubber. I don't know. Beaver anal gland? I don't. I gotta come back to that one.
I'm withholding my guess. Withholding the answer. Because now, the first one, I feel like. What's that thing in sausage? It's like fennel. Okay, I think this is fennel. That starts with an F. I'm gonna remember that. We're back in. Well, I thought it was oceanic, but. But not just like. a raw dog. It's not a gay fish. I know that.
I mean, but all these ocean smells. I gotta come back to that one. And for my final smell. Oh, you dropped a pea. Did that come out of your nose? Maybe. They're everywhere. Oh, you have quite a collection on top of your head.
Good. gosh. I think you'll get this one. That burns, homie. I feel like. I really think you'll get this one. And if you got this one, I feel like you'll get the whole thing. Like, I really feel like this is the. This is the key. I know. What is it? What is that? I don't feel like I can help you, because that one, I think you'll figure it out. And if you figure it out. It's over. Oh, man. That is. It's like a smelling sauce. What has it. What is so pungent? It's like. It's like a. It's like nose wasabi.
Wasabi. What's the other thing that's not wasabi? Maybe it's ginger. So I've got an F and I've got a G. F and G. It smells like the restroom of a. department store. Okay,
Ross? I mean, we're in the cleaner zone. The Ross restroom? I'm gonna say. Are brand names at play here? Not in this case. Go back to the third one. It's fish. Now, you. were talking about it. in a way that led us to believe that you were going in the right direction. Okay, so. it's fish plus.
What's fish plus? My favorite department store. I would call that. Where I get all my clean rubbers. Octopus. I call that octopus. It doesn't smell like an octopus. You don't like this. Okay, I'll give you a hint. And I'm. And I'm saying, this is saying a lot. I actually. Yes, it's fish plus. It's. It's the seaweed. Sushi.
Okay. Stevie, Stevie. It's for the. Well, I guess it's all for the children. Nori. Stevie. Okay, go back to the second one. All right, you've already given a guess, but you can use. You can use your. You said this word and then you did it. Use your power of intuition.
I said the word? Oh, come on. He's gonna get it if you tell him. Stevie. I said it in this round? He's gonna get it. Don't let him get it. I need to get a letter, dude. Dude. But hold on, since you're in the same boat I was in, you know some letters, and you're going into the end. I mean, like, that's. I didn't. I mean, I didn't. I don't know any letters. Nothing. F. I'll make a deal with you.
If. you. hold guesses now, I'll let you come here and I'll give you. the origin of the word. Okay. That should. That's the deal. For the kids. This is doing it for the kids. Okay. Oh, gosh, I'm so cold. I'm so miserable. I'm so miserable. His sign is about to fall off. I would like the origin of the word. The origin of this word is that of the bloody Henry.
and the sarcastic fringehead. English, please. That of the bloody Henry and the? The sarcastic fringehead. The sarcastic. fringehead? Bloody Henry. What is. What is Henry? What's a nickname for Henry? Henry.
Hold on. But now you say. Hank. But hold on. Combine that. with what you. I got an F. It starts with F. F. What's something you could pour on me that starts with an F? Fart. Liquid fart. I hope that's not it. Oh, that would be. That would be bad. Oh, pouring ferns on him.
Fleece. Feet? Feet. F-E-E-T. Feet. Let's show them what it is, guys. F-I-S-T. Fish. No. H, not T. No. We're not gonna fist you.
We're gonna. Get this out of here. We're gonna fish you, man. No, no, no. You ready? Oh, that does not smell great. You should have ferned him. I wish you had ferned him.
