Clowns: Good or Bad?
Clowns. Do you love them? Do you hate. them? Or are you scared of them? Hi, I'm Sean and this is Jessica from. Franklin, Tennessee. Let's talk about that. [Applause]. Good mythical mornings. Careful. Today's episode is brought to. you by YouTube original channels. That's right. We're fans of music, so. we're fans of the Fuse channel on. YouTube. You should check it out. Lots.
of music news, interviews, etc. Our. friend Dan Brown hosts a show. Musically. nerdy and amazing music nerd number. cruncher. So check out the Fuse channel. Make sure. you subscribe. Link in the description. And we're going to link out to one of. the episodes of Dan's show at the end of. this episode. YouTube.com/fuse. Last week we talked about the amazing. debate of fist bump versus handshake. We. also invited you to submit your video. responses suggesting what should be the. official mythical beast handshake. We're. still accepting.
video responses, so keep them coming. This means we need more because we. haven't found one yet. Keep them coming, guys. Okay, now let's. move on to another age-old debate, which. we asked you to talk about in the. comments last week. Clowns, good or bad? Little background on clowns, link. First. of all, I only researched using. Wikipedia. Just let me just explain that. right up front. or just acknowledge it. You don't have. to explain how you use Wikipedia. So, I. know how to use it. I think it's good information. But I.
will tell you that I was overwhelmed. with the. world of clowns. This is this isn't just people who dress. up like, "Hey, I got a white face now. with some red lips and a big nose.". And they don't talk like that. That's. how snakes talk as we have established. earlier in the week. Hey, but. I understand why people are creeped out. by him because when you when you're sort.
of the the curtain is pulled back, so to. speak, on the world of clowns, the. trench coat is opened up. what what kind of clowns are you talking. about? Like a hobo clown, you know? Exactly. And a decent exposure clown. What kind of circuses did you grow up. going to? It could be one of those. But. like you've actually white face is. actually like the quintessential clown. That's what they call it is when. somebody puts white makeup on all over. They cover up all their skin completely. And this is like like he's almost kind. of stern and he's like an authority.
figure and then he has like uh another. type of clown that he kind of bosses. around and they do it a lot in Europe. and it kind of freaked me out a lot. And. then I started reading about North. American clowns. Well, did you know in Europe the clown. the whitefaced clowns paint their ears. red? Yes. Crazy. Yeah. You read the same wiki entry. Yeah, I. like the wiki. Um, but in in North America, you've got. the hobo trench coat clown who is. migratory and finds work where he. travels. He's down on his luck, but he. maintains a positive attitude. The. who's migratory and does not work where.
he travels. He's down on his luck and. depressed about his situation. And the. bum who is non-migratory and. non-working. Like the fact that somebody. has thought about clowns this much and. that the clown community. believes in this like this is it scares. me. I understand why people are scared. of them. So you're afraid of clowns. Uh I think I have a mild form of. chorophobia. I think it should be called. clownophobia. Hello. That was an easy. missed opportunity. Clownophobia. Easier. to say. I don't even know if I'm.
pronouncing chlorophobia. Calrophobia. correctly. But this is a term of recent. origin, meaning fear of clowns. Probably. dating to the 80s. Oh, way back. Yeah. And I mean the 1980s. But let's go. to some mythical arguments. Uh you guys. submitted in the comments your arguments. last week. Clowns good or bad. Jeez. said, "Clowns are bad. They aren't funny. and they creep me out." Lastly, they. waste so much pie. I love pie. They're always throwing pies in each. other's faces.
Excellent point, Jeezy 777. It's a waste. The Fat Almighty says, "Clowns are horrible. You never know. who's behind all that makeup. It could. be a normal everyday guy." Yes. Or it. could be a ravenous serial killer who's. waiting till no one is looking to snatch. you up and rip your face off. Goodness. Seriously, this could be a reference to. John Wayne Gasey. Not to go dark for a. second here, but I'm going to go dark. for a second here because I believe that. one of. You mean no one's going to know where. you are? You're going to we're going to. lose all communication with you.
No, my conversation is going to take a. dark turn here. Okay. the subject matter. John Wayne. Gayy's serial killer who actually. dressed up like a clown was he actually. went to kids' birthdays parties and. stuff. He was a clown. He did that in. his free time. That was his profession. Well, he did some other things, but that. he as a pastime he was a clown. Oh god. And so I think that was when at least in. the culture here in the United States, people began to associate clowns with. negative imagery. And. he ruined it. He ruined clowns. And then.
you had Stephen King and you've got. these other iterations of, you know, you've got the the clown from uh Twisted. Metal, the video game. Oh, yeah. You. know, that guy. And so you've got all we. we like to represent that ironic. positive yet negative and dark. And I. think that happened with the with this. whole serial killer thing. Let me just stick with bad. Not a bad argument. Ronaldo Poya or something like that. says, "Clowns, good or bad, it depends. on the type of makeup they use.". Uh, no. I don't think it I don't think.
it does. Well, you can make the you can make a. smile or a frown and it's all in the. makeup. Bree 659. Clowns are cute unless they. are within a meter's length of you. Now, that's a good point. I mean, uh, there's. a there's a good perspective a little. bit later that says, you know what? What. would the circus be without clowns? I. think when you're in the stands and. they're and they're a long ways away, okay, that's a good thing. The whole. reason that they do their face like. that, paint it up, is so from a long.
distance, you can appreciate what. they're trying to emote. But you get. within a meter's length or a yard if. you're if you're into that. Uh it it. definitely gets creepy. There's no. denying that. And and I think really how children. respond to clowns. And listen, if you're. a clown and this is what you do for a. living or on the weekends, I'm sorry, but I think that the at least the. comments show that amongst people who. watch Good Mythical Morning and amongst. researchers, Link, people who've done. research on this, the consensus is. clowns are creepy, especially to.
children. Listen to this. According to. psychology professor at uh CSU, young children are very reactive to a. familiar body type with an unfamiliar. face. This is why when you like run. around with like a werewolf mask on, kids get scared freak out because. they're like, "He looks like a human. from the neck down, but he's a werewolf. from the top up." It's a mutant. Yeah. And a clown basically is exactly. the same thing. And it, listen, they. conducted a study at the University of. Sheffield, found that children did not. like clown decor in hospital or doctor's.
office settings. Dr. Penny Curtis, a. researcher, stated, "As adults, we make. assumptions about what works for. children. We found that clowns are. universally disliked by children. Some. found them quite frightening and. unknowable. So, you think you're doing a. great thing when you show up at a. birthday party, but the kids are. tolerating you. Now, they're scared out of their minds. We did get a comment, a mythical. perspective from someone who is a clown. JD dude, that I am a clown myself. Uh-oh. Clowns are good.
They make children they they make. children who like them very happy and. laugh. I like the fact that he put the. caveat, they make children who like them. happy and laugh. And this is coming from. a clown. If a child doesn't like them, then they don't need to hear them. I'm. sorry. They don't need to be near them. or hear them. I guess I think they are. good and happy. But he is a clown. So. he's he even the clown acknowledges that. children children if children don't like. me, they don't need to be near me. Keep them away from me because they will.
be freaked out of their minds. Now, here's a, you know, I grew up watching. the whitefaced clown, Bozo. Bozo the. clown. The suspense is killing me. [Music]. Bustling barnacles. There you are. He was awesome. And he would bring kids. out of the audience and he would have. like the little pales and then he would. you you'd throw ping pong balls into the. pales and you could win stuff. It's a. clown who'd let you win stuff. And he. had, you know, the big shoes and the big.
hair and he had a little sidekick, Cookie. He made me happy. The thing you don't understand, the. little kids with him were actors. That. they were totally freaked out the entire. time. They were scared out of their. minds. Every time you get close to them, they got really scared, but they were. being paid to act as audience members. That doesn't prove anything. That's a That's a good point. I'm just. trying. Okay. What about this? Oh, our. Sean Maguire said rodeo clowns. Boom. the Trump card. They save lives and. protect property equals good. You can't.
hate on a rodeo clown. So, at least we. got to carve out an exception. I hate. clowns except for rodeo clowns. But the whole point is the bulls are. like the bulls hate the clowns and chase. them. The bulls hate the clowns so much. that the humans should like them that. they move towards the clowns. No, even. the bulls hate the clowns. I don't I. just don't think clowns have a leg to a. big redfooted leg to stand on. Yeah, I had an uncle uh at one point. through marriage, which now I was.
divorced and I think that's a good. thing. But he was a clown, temporary uncle. He had a Volkswagen. bus and it had two front ends on it, so. you could never tell if it was going. forwards or reverse. Just like a clown to come up with. something like that. That's pretty awesome. Yeah. Okay, I take it back there. Every. once in a while clowns do something. pretty inventive. Now, if he was a rodeo clown and it was. full of miniature horses, that would be. pretty awesome. Okay. So again, let's. wrap up this episode. We're going to. talk about something else next week. But. are you satisfied? I. I think. Have you reached the conclusion?
I think the consensus is there are some. people, most mostly clowns, who think. clowns are good. And then there are most. other people who are scared of clowns. And we just need to be honest and say, listen, let's just come up with. something else. Just do magic. Just. stick with magic. Just take the makeup. off and do magic. Kids, everybody loves. a magician. We didn't even talk about. minds. I mean, we're not even going to. go there. Good gracious. Next week, it's. time for a new debate. Leave it in the. comments below. We're going to talk. about what the legal driving age should. be. Now, you know, it it it doesn't vary. widely. I think it varies from like we.
can find places where 14 is the legal. driving age and it can go somewhere it's. 18. So, but somewhere in that range we. need to hear are your arguments. What. should the legal driving age be? Okay. And if you're a clown who drives a bus. that can go forwards or backwards, there should probably be a different. time when you can drive that. It's. probably like 26, like when you can rent. a car. We we'll discuss that next week. potentially. Let's spin the wheel. Leave your comment below. Let's end this. episode. Thanks for contributing to the. debates in a mythical fashion. Um and if.
you're a clown and we've offended you, um I'm sorry. We're sorry. Thumb Russell. All right. We need to do. this in a place where it can be seen. We'll do it right here in front of this. I don't think it can. Okay. Can we do. this? Yeah. Right there. Okay. So, in there some kind of thing. down a little bit further. Isn't there some kind of thing that you. do? Like I declare a thumb war or. something? 1 2 3 4 I declare a thumb war. Oh, hey.
Your hand is so long. Yeah, that's right. I'm like I'm crazy. Your hand is also very sweaty. That doesn't help. Your hand is sweaty. What? I can't grip you cuz it. Cuz your hand's sweaty. Why is your hand. so sweaty? Cuz I'm. What? What? Two, three. Yeah. Black yoga in clowns for the win. Lionel Richie's Tuskegee. So, we've got.
Madonna at number one. Lionel Richie at. number two. I'm sorry, but what decade. is this again? Is this 2012? Is this. 1982? I'm a little lost here. Uh, and. the '8s connection doesn't stop.
