Cheap vs. Expensive Products
- When is the expensive option worth buying? - Let's talk about that. (bright music). (fire whooshing) - Good Mythical Morning. - People say that money doesn't grow on trees, but paper comes from trees. And money is on paper. Ergo, money does come from trees. - But that doesn't mean that we need. to spend money like it grows on trees. There are so many expensive things out there. that have a cheap counterpart.
- Ergo, that leads us to ask the question, "Should you just buy the cheap one?". - Ergo, it's time for. The Power of the Price. (upbeat music). (air whooshing) - [Brittany] One of these. meat tenderizers is pricey. and the other is cheap. So go ahead and tenderize some chicken. and then see if you could possibly pick. which one is more expensive. - Maybe shiny makes something more expensive. The shinier it is. 'Cause this one, there's no way this is very expensive. It's only about 16 pounds.
- Oh, really? - And has like the- - Good God. - It has the... - That's light. Feel how light that is. - Is this hollow? - So this, I mean, this one's got, like, a, it's got an etched lion inside of some parentheses. (crew laughing). I mean, a parenthetical lion is not cheap. - This one has a little chef giving a thumbs up. And it says Gourmet Easy. - Gourmet Easy. This one's got fake rivets.
That's... - Suspicious. - You wanna go back? - Okay. - Start with that. - We're gonna go big on the right, little on the left. - Wait. What do you mean big? - Just so we keep them straight. - Oh, oh. - I'm gonna hit the big one. - Okay. Yeah, I'm gonna go on the left. - On the right. - So when you tenderize meat, you just hit it. - Yeah, like this. (tenderizers banging). I got chicken on me. (crew laughing). - I mean, you- - And I've gone clear through.
- You were pulverizing that thing. - I've completely gone through this chicken. - Oh my God. - I don't know if you can see that, but I've gone through. - It's too much, man. - That's a tender chicken. - It's too much. - And that was just, that was three hits. - But you're banging too hard, dude. - No, no, no! - Look at this. - I was letting the weight of the utensil do all the work. (tenderizer banging). Why you having so much trouble over there? - [Link] I'm just finessing it, man. (tenderizer banging). - Trade. - So this is what. you would want.
This thing is so heavy. (tenderizer banging). - [Rhett] Well, I clear went through this one, too. - [Crew 1] Oh my God. (crew laughing). - It's not the tool. It's the man behind the tool. - What do you have to prove, you know? - I'm not proving anything. (tenderizer banging). - [Brittany] For reference, you're not supposed. to destroy the chicken when you tenderize it. (crew laughing). - I mean, I'm not even trying and I've destroyed that. (tenderizer banging) This is like Thor's hammer. - Okay, well, I think we-. - Mjolnir. - I think we've had enough fun, Brittany.
- Mjolnir. - [Brittany] All right. Place your hands over the more expensive meat tenderizer. - Hold on. I need to think for a second. - [Brittany] Rhett told me you had enough fun. - Yeah, but I didn't have enough think. - I got little pieces of chicken all over me. - All right. I've got the big one now. - [Brittany] Three, two, one. - All right. - It's gotta be this one, just by sheer weight alone. - [Brittany] Yeah, you're correct. - Okay. (bell dings). - [Brittany] So the cheaper tenderizer. that started out on Link's side is 29.99.
from the brand Gourmet Easy. - Yeah. - [Brittany] So how much is the expensive one? - Okay. - So this one's 29.99. - This is overkill. This is the Hoover Dam. of meat hammers, whatever they're called. - Is it the closest without going over or just the closest? - $30. - [Brittany] Just the closest. - Okay. Doesn't it feel nice when you know you can go over? - Yeah. I feel so free.
- It's just so freeing. I can go over. - Okay. All right. Is that full tang? - Yes, it is. Look, you can see the tang. - We have a full tang tenderizer. - You got a full tang. When we learned that knives can have full tang, we never forgot about it. - We've said full tang. a lot since then. Okay. - [Brittany] All right, let's see your guesses. - $119.
- 89.99. Come on, let's not go crazy. - Inflation. - [Brittany] The expensive version. is the 15-inch meat tenderizer from Dalstrong. and it costs 179. - Whoa! - $180? (bell dings). - Well. - [Brittany] It's 3.9 pounds. - So not 16. - Yeah, it just, it needs to have another purpose, like self-defense. - It could. I think it is. I think that's built in. That's part of it. - [Brittany] And they say that one thud. with the meat hammer turns the toughest cuts tender,
which feels like a pretty good catchphrase. - Yeah. - Yeah, 'cause-. - Yeah. - If you go with two-. - Really rolls off the tongue, too. - It gets completely flat. And if you go with three, (tenderizer bangs) it destroys it. And I'm not adding anything to it. I and the chicken commission are upset. But meat tenderizers, we are saying... - Oh yeah, we have to decide if you think it's worth it. I mean, I feel like I was able. to get the job done with this. And you know how difficult it is to, like... How many times you open your drawer in the kitchen.
and you're like, "I'm running out of room. I can't find things?" - Yeah. - You're gonna throw something that big, you have to hang that thing, like, on the wall. - That's a good idea, though. - Next to grandma's ashes. (crew laughing). - Yeah. Unless you wanna display this. - I think this gets the job done. - We're gonna say meat tenderizers. - [Together] No dice. (buzzer buzzes). (air whooshing). Harmonicas? (crew laughing). - [Brittany] Yes. - Mine's a C. - Mine's a C. - I don't... (harmonica music).
- Not exactly the same. - Uh-uh. - One of these is an actual C. Now, I have perfect pitch. (harmonica music). This is playing a C, that's not playing a C. - This is a bit flat, isn't it? - I wonder which one's more expensive. (harmonica music). Just a couple of cowboys. (crew clapping).
Oh, yes. Please clap. (harmonica music). I gotta tell you right now, this says Seydel on it. - Mine says Blues Harp Reju. - And this one... - I think that's Cajun. or French. - Do you see that? What does that say? - L. - Does it say E-S-L? - Yeah, this is an E-S-L harmonica. (crew laughing).
What's your first language? - Sounded American to me. (Rhett and Link laughing). - So now are we gonna switch because, you know, when I play a harmonica, I put more than my lips on it. - Yeah, you get your tongue up. I don't think I need to play yours. I can tell you right now, this one... - Play it. Play it again. - Well, just side by side just... Open your hands. Open your hands. Open both of your hands. Tell me which one's more expensive. - This one weighs three times as much. and it's entirely chrome.
This one's got that plastic thing in the middle. We know which one's cheaper. - But you know what? There's more than one way to test a harmonica. - Oh. Uh-huh. Is this what you're talking about? - Yeah. Where we're going, we don't need. this particular tenderizer. - Yeah, we don't. (tenderizer bangs). - Okay, don't hit this one. Save that one for me.
(tenderizer bangs) Okay. - Oh, that one is so cheap. Look at how it fell apart. - Okay. - Here, now just let it fall. I mean, you don't even have to use muscles. (tenderizer bangs). Wow. We're gonna find out. that that's like a $300 harmonica in a second. - I think all this can be buffed out. - Yeah, yeah, yeah. (tenderizer bangs). (harmonica music). Wow. - I think I cut myself. (harmonica music).
Oh, it's really out here now. - Most of the holes. (harmonica music). - Oh, we've made it dissonant. - This one still works, dude. - This is gonna be a... - They sound tender. - Okay. - This is gonna be. the most interesting cowboy at the campfire. - Put it up there so we can put our hands over it. - [Brittany] All right, hands over the more expensive. in three, two, one.
- Of course. So we know this to be the case, Brittany. - [Brittany] Of course. The expensive harmonica was on Rhett's side. The cheaper one on Link's side is 5.99, is the Blues Harp Diatonic Harmonica from the brand Reju. How much do you think the expensive one costs? - Okay. Now, I mean, we own a lot of harmonicas. 'Cause the problem is you gotta get different keys. - Okay.
- I think it's $65. - Ooh, I think it's $69. - Ooh, you're so cute today. - That wasn't a joke. - [Brittany] All right. - It wasn't a joke. - [Brittany] The expensive harmonica. is the Seydel 1847 Lightning and it costs $164. - Oh. I'm sorry about what we did. - Good gracious. (bell dings). $164. We'll need to bang that out. (Rhett laughing). - Yeah, yeah, we can. - A really good harmonica is worth the additional price. This much, I think you can get a middle ground one.
that's decent, but if we have to choose one. or the other, what are we saying? - I think that it depends. on what your purpose for a harmonica. If you're the guy that just, like, "I'm going on a camping trip, I'm gonna take it just in case,". I think that the Blues Harp was gonna be fine. - Good enough. - But if you're... - A performing artist. - Who's the guy from the, John, what's his name? The harmonica guy from the '90s? - [Crew 2] John Popper from Blues Traveler? - John Popper from Blues Traveler. - If you're John Popper from Blues Traveler. - You gotta do this. If you're making a living with a harmonica,
that's the only way you can justify that. - Yeah. And we assume that we all are. So, harmonicas- - Okay. - [Link] Worth the price. - Worth the price. (upbeat music) (air whooshing). Hmm. - Hmm. - What do we call these? - What do we call these? - Carbonators? - Carbonators. Carbonation machines. - Carbonation makers. - They're not Soda Streams. - That's the brand. - That's like calling a tissue a Kleenex. - And we would never. - Never done that. - [Link] Mine's got this nice finish. - [Rhett] I love the matte. I love the matte. - Yours is shiny. - Mine's gonna show. all my prints - Looks like plastic. Mine seems like some sort of metal.
- You wanna try this one first? (air blowing) - Ooh. - Mine has a plastic cap. (air blows). Don't waste all your... - Oh, I got plenty. (air blows) - I'm assuming this works. Oh. (air blows). - What kind of gas is this? - Hopefully helium. (air blows). - How? Nope, it's not. You know how when you suck helium. and you raise your voice anyway? - Well, what actually happens is when you suck helium,
it does work, but then as it begins. to wear off, you compensate. - You start compensating. - Yeah. - And then you just end up talking like this, like a fool. - Okay, I've been told two seconds. And you know I know two seconds without a timer. - Yeah. It's how long you make love. (bubbles blowing). (bubbles blowing). Oh, that's fizzy. - And then. (air blows). - [Link] So you only did two? - How many more do I need to do? One more? - Mm-hm.
(bubbles blowing). - I told you I was listening. when you told me how many to do. (air blows) - Ooh. And then what? And so now... - So I've done six seconds of carbonation. - But now you need to take it out quick. and put the lid on it. 'cause you've let it all out. - That's not how it works. It's in the water, man. (crew laughing). - But some of it's getting out. - Okay, so I got six seconds of carbonation in this. My favorite band. - And then. Okay, you gotta make sure you get that right there.
- Yours took a few more screws. - Oh yeah. That's a point. (bubbles blowing). - How many? Hold on. - Two seconds. - That was three. and a half seconds. - That's the first one. What? - Do it and then come back, bro. (air blows) (crew laughing). It does feel like there's a lot more going on with this one. And I don't know if it's because of the user. (crew laughing).
I feel like just one second to be even. (bubbles blowing). (air blows) - Cool, though. It's cool. - Okay. All right. - It's cool. (bubbles blowing). (air blows) - Okay, well, it's not even now. - And then what I'm gonna do is... - Hold on. I have to even out. (bubbles blowing). (bottle thuds). (air blows) (crew laughing). Can you over carbonate water?
Like, what would happened? Would it kill you? - I think the bottle will explode. - Nobody said anything. Okay. All right. - So how do we measure? You're just letting it just be free air? - Yeah, 'cause have you ever opened a drink before? It's not like every second. that a carbonated drink is open that... I mean, look, it's still very carbonated. (liquid pouring). (liquid pouring). Satisfying.
- [Link] That looks pretty comparable. - I think I got more than you. (tongue clicking). - Why do bubbles make it taste better? - Bubbles do change the flavor of things. (tongue clicking). - Yours has more bubbles, but mine has more hidden bubbles. - [Crew 1] What? (crew laughing). - He's not wrong. - My bubbles are hidden, but there's a lot more of them.
- [Rhett] There's a pepperiness to your water. - Spicy water, my kids would call it. - [Rhett] Hmm. - I mean, this one is- - How does your tongue. taste bubbles? - Almost twice. as bubbly as yours. - Are you tasting the gas? Is your tongue tasting the gas? Is that why it tastes peppery? - It's tasting the absence of water, which is pepper. - The absence of water is pepper? - Yeah, that's how they make pepper.
- Hmm. - [Link] Mine is more carbonated. You ready to vote? - Yeah. - All right. - Hold on, mine's taller. - [Brittany] Hands over the more. expensive carbonator machine. in three, two, one. - We have to agree with this, right? - Look at that. - I mean, look at. that brushed metal here. - It's got that thing here. (air blows). - [Brittany] The more expensive carbonator. was on Link's side. (air blows). The cheaper one on Rhett's side is $45-. - Hoo! Hoo! - From Culinary Chef. - How many? - [Brittany] So how much. do you think the expensive one costs? - $45. - $45. - $45?
- [Brittany] And I think carbonation makes water taste bad. - Oh, really? You don't like spicy water? - [Brittany] I hate carbonation. This has been very painful for me. - Oh, you don't even like to see somebody do it? - [Brittany] No. - What about cola? - [Brittany] Don't like it. I don't drink any soda. - What do you drink? - [Brittany] Water with no bubbles. - Okay. - No milk? - But that doesn't make you boring. - [Brittany] No. No milk. Unless it's carbonated. That's the one thing I like with bubbles. - Okay. All right.
Just wanna make sure you're drinking your milk. - 45. 45, right? - Yeah. She said 45. We've been underestimating everything. You've been way underestimating everything. - That's not gonna happen this time. - Oh, but it's not as heavy as I thought it might be. (lips popping). Okay. $159. - $111.11.
- [Brittany] Well, you continue your trend. of being quite a bit lower. because the expensive carbonator machine from Aarke. costs $249. - Okay. And now we're going to destroy it. - Dang, son. (bell dings). - No, we're not. - Well, let's destroy the cheap one. It's only $44. - No, no. - It'll be fun. - We don't believe in that kind of cheap entertainment. - Give it to me. Come on. - No, no. - Give it to me. Give it to me. Give it to me. - We're not gonna do that. - Come on, just give it to me. - Okay, I'll give it to you, and right when you get it, we'll cut. - Yeah, yeah, yeah. Carbonator machines, worth the price?
- Hold on, we haven't thought about that. We don't know. (crew laughing). I gotta say, I don't know how often... I think the main thing about this. is it just looks a little bit cheap. and you've gotta put this thing on your countertop, and then people judge you when they come over to your house. - I can't, I can't, I can't wait any longer. (yells). Did I scare you? (crew laughing). I did scare you. - A little bit. (Link laughing). (air whooshing). Carbonator machines, worth the price.
- [Link] The price. (air whooshing). (Rhett and Link laughing). (key clicks) (gentle music). (air whooshing) - Under these comforters.
and sheets are air mattresses. That is what we're testing. One of these is an expensive air mattress. The other is an inexpensive air mattress. - It's good to have an air mattress. Mine just busted. - Okay. - So. - Well, if you guess correctly-. - Lando had some friends over. - You can take it home. Also, mathematically, it is impossible. for you to win at this point, but I will extend an olive branch. - Yes. - And I will... - Take it. I'll take it. - Okay, you took it. And I will tell you that if you get it right. and also within $10, you win the whole game.
- All right. - Shall we go to bed? - Yeah. Oh, this one's kind of slick. - It's a little short. My feet are off. - [Link] It's a standard double, I think. - I have to sleep at an angle on these. - This is not nothing bad. Nothing bad over here. - But the real test of a bed is sharing it with a person.
You know what I'm saying? Because... - No. - Well. - Like if you're. having a sleepover? - No, like, if you're going to see your, you know, if you and Christy are going to see... Not if me and you are traveling together. I will say, there was a point in our careers. in which we shared a hotel room. - Yeah. We didn't share a pillow like we're doing right now, though. (crew laughing) - And there was a point. before that when we would go to these, like... We would go with like two other people.
and we would share a bed and they would share a bed. It was like four guys in a hotel room. - Yeah. It was like that scene in "Fargo.". - I will not share a toilet with another man. at this point in my life. I refuse to do that. - First, I would be. laying this way. And I'm gonna be moving around. - Right. - When I move around, does that disturb you? - Hold on. Hey, let me settle in. Let me settle in. Move. Yeah. Yeah. - It's got this, like, cylinder on the side. that keeps you from rolling off.
- Okay. - Or not. - Okay. Well, it's only so effective. - Let me feel yours. - Would you like to feel it with me in it? - I don't really need that. - Well, hold on, but to make it even, though, just roll around like you were doing a second ago. - I almost went off. - This one's worse. The shake factor on this one is worse. - Oh, and this one doesn't have anti-rolling sides in the... - It doesn't have an anti-roll side. - It doesn't come up as high.
Definitely makes me wanna roll off. Hey. - Hey. (crew laughing). - Hey. - Hey. Did you see Michael and Meredith... - Kissing? - She's a junior. - I know, and he's only a sophomore. How is he pulling that? Do you think that he saw us. when he embraced her over her shoulder, looking out his window and seeing us in the backyard? - I don't think you can see out.
when you're looking in the backyard. I think only we could see in. Let's never tell him about this. - It did seem like he made eye contact with us, though. - Let's never, at some point in the distant future, on a rather popular internet show admit that we peeped. - Admit to watching Michael kiss his girlfriend. who's an upperclassman- - Yes. - From his backyard? - Yeah. Let's never talk about that in public. - Yeah. Okay, I'm ready to vote. - Okay. We think we know what we (mumbles). Okay. Okay. - [Brittany] All right.
Stand behind the more expensive air mattress. - Stand behind? Okay. - [Brittany] You could put your hand above it, too. Three, two, one. - This one's got roll sides on it. - That's the only difference. - This right here. - And then we moved a little bit more in that one. - Yeah. More expensive. - [Brittany] You are correct. (Link laughing) - Oh. - [Brittany] The cheap air mattress on Rhett's side. is from the brand Tanstrider and costs 56.99. - Whoa. - [Brittany] So how much.
do you think this expensive one costs? (tenderizer thuds) - Well. - Did you hear the sound that made? - Well, yeah. It is only $56. Okay. - I don't think it... (tenderizer thuds). Did you hear the sound that made? (Rhett laughing). - Yeah. It's pretty satisfying. $56.99 for that one. Okay. Now, you gotta be within $10. - Yeah, yeah, yeah. Don't worry about me. - And also, I have to not be within $10. If I'm closer than you, then you definitely don't win.
- $56. How much would I wanna pay for this? That's not the right question. How much would they sell this for? - Okay. - I think it's $180. - I said $235. - Ooh! - [Brittany] Well, you learned a lesson too late. because now you've overshot it. The expensive air mattress from the brand SoundAsleep. costs $139.95. - Oh, that's not bad at all. - Oh. Okay. - But I wasn't within 10. - You weren't. - Crap! - Do you feel in the brief experience that we had.
on these two mattresses, and what an experience it was, that it's worth... I feel like-. - I think it's still cheap enough than it is worth it. - It's probably something with the air mechanism. or, like, how durable this thing is. - Right. - I'm gonna say. (air whooshing). - [Link] Air mattresses. - [Together] Worth the price. (air whooshing) - [Brittany] And Rhett, since you won, you get to take some cheap shots at Link. for the rest of the day. - Okay. (crew laughing). - How would he even know how to do that? - What is it? Plaid day?
(crew laughing). - Thanks for being your Mythical best. - You know what time it is. - Hi, I'm Aaron. - I'm Paula. And we're at. the world's largest Ouija board. And it's time to spin... - The Wheel of Mythicality. - It's just on top of some apartment somewhere? - Yeah, I think it's just graffiti. And I don't think it holds any power over us. - We do have a little history for you.
