‘LARGE AND POWERFUL’: Trump orders new round of strikes on Iran as pressure campaign intensifies

Right now, the US is launching strikes. on Iranian targets near the straight of. Hermuz. posting on X just moments ago. Today at. 12:00 p.m. Eastern, US forces began. striking Islamic Revolutionary Guard. Corps targets in Iran. The strikes. follow recent attempted attacks by the R. IRGC against commercial shipping in the. Straight of Her and against American. service members deployed to the region. We have team coverage. Chief National.

Security Correspondent Jennifer Griffin. in DC. But first, we begin with chief. foreign correspondent Trey Yinst. Trey. to you with the latest. >> Yeah, Molly. Good afternoon. We are. tracking these latest US strikes that. appear to be ongoing right now against. southwestern Iran. According to US. Central Command, these strikes are in. response to Iranian attacks on vessels. in the Strait of Hormuz in addition to. that attack earlier this week against US. forces in Jordan. Remember how this. recent exchange began? Early in the.

week, the United States conducted. strikes against Iran's Larak Island. when, according to US Central Command, the Iranians were preparing to launch. rockets with sea mines attached to. threaten once again this critical. international waterway. When those. strikes took place, the Iranians. responded with eight ballistic missiles. being launched toward US forces. stationed in Jordan. And the president. said that there would be a response to. that attack on US forces. And it appears. this response is underway right now. The.

latest information that we have from the. ground inside of Iran, these appear to. be relatively widespread strikes, not. just targeting that southern city of. Bonder Abbas, but also initial reports. of explosions on Keshum Island and areas. even further south of this area next to. the Gulf of Oman. It's an indication. that once again the United States is. trying to send a message to the Iranian. regime that threats against this. international waterway will not be. tolerated. They've been watching using. Space Force and also the US Navy that is.

positioned there at that blockade line. in the Gulf of Oman. Whenever any of the. Iranian forces try to move air defense. systems or radars, they are watching. very closely and likely these are the. targets that are being hit right now as. we speak. But again, the latest. information that we have, US strikes. against Iran are ongoing at this hour, targeting specific areas in southwestern. Iran in response to Iranian attacks on. vessels in the Straight of Hormuz. and. that attack on US forces earlier this. week. Molly. >> Trey Yanks, thank you very much.

Clearly, the monthsl long uh lull, the. month-long lull is over. Now, we now go. to our chief national security. correspondent, Jennifer Griffin. Jennifer, to you. >> Molly, just to add to Trey's reporting, um I've spoken to sources at Sentcom and. we can confirm that those strikes are. ongoing targeting areas along the. Straight of Hormuz where they have seen. some activity of late in terms of. rockets and missile launchers that. appeared prepared to uh to target those. ships in the Straight of Hormuz. It's.

important to point out that last night. there was another Iranian projectile. fired at a Saudi uh tanker that was. passing through the straight or or. toward the straight. And that is the. fourth such ship that has been targeted. by Iranian uh cruise missiles and. projectiles, drones and other uh other. missiles since last Monday. There have. been eight ships who have been targeted. or struck by Iranian missiles since July. 14th. So this is an ongoing problem. the. IRGC either doesn't have control of the.

units that are firing these or this is a. low-level asymmetric warfare that they. are attempting. And as Trey mentioned, uh the the uptick in violence really. started after that ship was targeted by. the Iranians on Saturday. On Sunday, the. US uh launched air strikes against the. first air strikes in over a month at. those rocket launchers that were going. to place sea mines in the straight of. Hormuz. Last week, Sentcom had said that. they had cleared all the mines out of. the straight of Hormuz so that uh marine.

traffic could uh start moving through. that southern corridor that they had. cleared close to the Omani shoreline. Uh. that if they had if the Iranians had. been able to fire those sea mines into. the straight, that would have uh caused. more problems uh for the shipping lane. So, this was a preemptive and what St. is describing as defensive strikes to. send a message to the IRGC to stop. harassing marine traffic in the straight. of Hormuz. Molly. >> Jennifer Griffin, thank you very much.

Uh Brian, a very significant uh update. there from Jennifer who also notes that. SenCom had just recently announced that. the mines had been cleared from the. straight of her. Is this something that. perhaps created a great frustration uh. with Iran and it led to an end of of. what were a few weeks of relative calm? >> They're slowly losing control of the. strait. That's what's happening from 22. to 25 to 27 to 33 ships are getting. through. So if the ships are able to get. through the goal would be at 100 to 115. That's what it was prior to the conflict.

uh the start of February 27th. So if you. get that uh those ships more and more. ships feeling confident enough to go. through the portion of the straight that. we have carved out, then you're going to. see the the tourniquet just loosen up. And now Iran looks inside and they say. we have long gas lines. are realale 2.1. million realale for every $1. Inflation. at between 60 and 75%. And now we have. gas lines in a country that is floating. on an ocean of oil. So if 3 in the. morning they have gas lines, but they.

say, "Well, we're in control of the. straight and we're going to get tolls.". No, you're not. No, you aren't. And now. we find out the president uh preion. comes out and says can we go back to. theou that we had a few months ago the. deal of a lifetime that in my view was. terrible for America because we had. freelanced we had freed up all the. sanctions and allowed uh the strait to. open up and they were going to. eventually toll it. So they blew the. deal of a lifetime and I don't think. we're going to get it back. I think the. u I think the news is beginning to. really do some damage now. the the.

Supreme Leader came out and said, "Hey, civilian leadership, do me a favor. Get. a deal done." Really? So the tough guys, the IRGC and the Supreme Leader who's in. a really courageous guy who's sitting in. a basement somewhere wondering where. half of his his face is and his arm, he's the one telling civilian leadership. to get a deal done. And that, pun. intended, that chip has sailed. And I. think that right now I sense we're in a. really good spot. In fact, I saw Brett. McGherk, who's hardly a Trump fan, came. out and say, "There's nowhere." And the.

Wall Street Journal echo this. Uh. there's nowhere to say that the US is. losing this. What the president's doing. is doing something that many people. didn't think he had, and that is showing. patience. >> Yeah. And it's been interesting to hear. Trey talk about the widespread nature of. what's currently happening, the strikes. that are ongoing. >> Iran facing pressure on multiple fronts. now. The US renewed strikes on the. country over the weekend and tighter US. sanctions put an already struggling. economy in a strange hold. The region. now awaits a US response after new.

attacks on two tankers in the contested. street of Hormuz. So far, there's no. claim of responsibility, but Iran has. frequently fired on ships traveling. through the waterway. President Trump is. reportedly considering a sententcom. proposal for limited strikes in the. street. The goal is to deter Iran and. reduce risks to oil tankers. Here's more. from the president. It's very limited. Look, they're a. failed nation. Yeah, they're a failed. nation. Uh they've got 350% inflation. They have no currency. Uh they're not.

paying their soldiers. Their leaders are largely dead. Uh their. navy is gone. Their air force is gone. Their uh surveillance equipment is. almost entirely gone. Uh that doesn't. mean we won't smack them. We'll see what. happens. A new opinion piece with this. headline. A realistic look at the war. It isn't as easy as Trump expected, but. don't assume the US has already lost. First, a chief foreign correspondent. Trey Yensky is live in Tel Aviv. He's. got the update for us. Hello, Trey.

Axios reports the idea. behind the plan is to reduce the risk of. Iranian attacks on oil tankers, US Navy. ships, and air force aircraft to mow the. lawn. As one person put it overnight, another tanker coming out of the. straight of Hormuz reported being hit by. three projectiles as Iran threatens the. critical waterway. The president spoke.

from the Oval Office yesterday afternoon. about the renewed tension. >> We have the street of Heramus in. extremely good shape. you know, we're. taking over. Many, many ships got. through last night, as you know, with. the Navy's assistance, and we've been. averaging 30 ships a night. That's a. lot, and a lot of oil is coming out. That's why you haven't seen the price of. oil go like they thought it might have. to go. >> Iran's president, Massud Peskin, has.

indicated the Iranians are still. interested in an agreement, but. President Trump told Fox News he isn't. sure he can depend on Iran for a deal. The comments from Iran's president come. as the Iranian economy is under new. economic strain due to the ongoing US. sanctions and the naval blockade. >> State clearly that if America returns to. its commitments under the memorandum of. understanding, the Islamic Republic of. Iran will immediately reciprocate. >> We're also tracking another regional. development as Israel resumed strikes.

against Hamas in Gaza today. Four. Palestinians were reportedly killed. Local reports indicate Israeli forces. were carrying out an operation to detain. a Hamas official when the troops came. under some sort of attack. The IDF says. they captured the Hamas official and. brought him back to Israel alive. There's no indication any Israeli forces. were injured. There are a lot of moving. parts in the region right now, but the. focus does remain on Iran and how the. United States plans to respond against. that missile attack earlier this week on. US forces. Sandra.

Center for National Security, also. former Pentagon official and former Navy. captain. Um, Brent, welcome to you. So, we we now will watch the administration. weigh its next response to Iran and. these new Hormuz attacks. So, what do. you see happening next? >> Well, thanks for having me on. I think. there's two two kind of like lines of.

thought here. One is the response to the. missile attack against the base in. Jordan which deserves a response but. that is I think more targeted on the. missile batteries and the command and. control for those type of facilities and. it'll probably just be responsive what's. going on in the straits of Hammuz going. back to the attack over the weekend on. Lar Island. It's clear the US military. is taking a much more forceful or. offensive posture and that is not. waiting or responding to attacks but. rather if they see a threat to actually. engage it even if it's a threat that's.

not direct directed at US forces in this. case against shipping. This is the mines. that were going to be placed by the. Iranians. And clearly these attacks that. we've just seen in the last 24 hours or. so, are the Iranians continuing to try. to use the last bit of leverage they. have in holding shipping at risk in the. Strait of Hormuz? >> Brett, um the Wall Street Journal is. highlighting this particular aspect of. the battle for the control of the Strait. of Hormuz. An excerpt reads, quote, "At.

the heart of the fight is a fundamental. imbalance of mine warfare. Iran doesn't. necessarily need to sink ships. said. only needs to persuade ship owners, captains, and ensures that the risk of. encountering a mine while transiting the. strait is too high to make the trip. For. the US, however, which wants to ensure. safe passage, the mission is harder. It. needs to disable or remove every mine. So, what about this mine warfare? And.

what will it do to hamper progress there. in the street? >> Well, no doubt the mine threat is a is a. significant one. It's also one that. bedevils US forces and our allies in the. Western Pacific. But there's it's. actually the bar is a lot lower than. mine placement. All the Iranians simply. have to do is get a couple of guys out. on a boat with AK-47s. to create an incident. And that incident. lowers or causes questions and ship ship. captains going through the straits. It's. safe to go through and also insurance.

markets, the PNI markets to raise the. rates to make it prohibited for sailing. there. Now, apparently with the US. having a, you know, the escort service. that's going on there and 30 ships or so. going through, that confidence or at. least the patience to wait out the. Iranian threat seems to be ebbing and I. think the time again is on the United. States's side here. >> Got it, Brent. Always appreciate your. expertise on this. Thank you. >> Thank you, Sander. after new strikes on Iran. Let's go to. our chief foreign correspondent Trey Y. inst who fielded the phone call just a. short time ago. What' the president tell. you, Trey? >> Yeah, John. Good afternoon. I just spoke. with President Trump who indicated that. if the Iranians respond to these US. strikes against their country. The. president said they'll be hit much. harder. He went on to say today's. strikes were a very big hit and if it. goes a third time, they're going to be. totally wiped out as a country. Now, I. asked the president what was hit tonight.

in Iran, specifically in the. southwestern part of the country next to. the straight of Hormuz. President Trump. says a lot of radar and added that they. were trying to rebuild the radar systems. and the United States was watching. And. then just before they completed this. construction, that's when these strikes. took place. The president says the USS. George Washington, that new aircraft. carrier that arrived in theater last. week, is loaded to the gills with. ammunition. and he indicated that they. have enough to continue this fight.

against Iran again if the Iranians do. decide to respond. As for any sort of. possible agreement with the Iranians, President Trump says, "I think an. agreement with them isn't worth the. paper it's written on. We gave them a. lot of chances." But again, the latest. information that we have, John, US. strikes are ongoing against Iran, hitting the southwestern part of the. country. And the president once again in. a call with Fox News warning the Iranian. regime if they respond to these strikes. against the southwestern part of Iran. that they will be hit much harder. And.

again, he goes on to say if this goes. for a third time, they will be wiped out. as a country. He described the Iranians. as crazy and stupid. And again, the. region is waiting to see if there will. be an Iranian response already in. Iranian state media. They are. threatening retaliation against US. forces in the region. John Sandra. >> I mean, they may be crazy and stupid, but they've also got to be terrified. because the Space Force has got a a. microscope on everything that they do. We hit a couple of missile sites that. were trying to fire mines into the.

street of Hormuz from Lar Island, which. is right near where the strikes were on. Khim Island. Now, they're looking at. them trying to rebuild radars, and. they're taking those out. Targets, I. think you said, were also hit in Bonder. Abbas. I mean, the Iranians have got to. be looking at this and saying, "Every. time we try to make a move, we're. getting dinged by the US military.". Yeah, absolutely. The US military is. watching very closely the movement of. vessels and military personnel. specifically in this area next to the. straight of Hormuz. And it's very.

interesting the president talking about. these radar systems that he says were. hit tonight. They were watching them as. they were rebuilding the radar systems. and then they hit them. And all along. this is happening with the straight of. Hormuz and the issue of mines. The. president indicated it's now cleared. after that operation by the US Navy to. ensure that these mines were not in the. way of international shipping vessels. But we know this exchange of fire all. started when the Iranians were trying to. launch these FARs 5 rockets with sea.

mines attached into the strait to try. and remine this area. And that's what. drew the initial strikes against Lorac. Island over the weekend. And so a lot of. kinetic activity and again the region is. waiting tonight to see if the Iranians. are going to respond to these US strikes. against their country. These were. certainly more widespread than some. analysts anticipated but the president. indicated he is looking to send a. message to the Iranian regime about. threatening the straight of Hormuz and. US forces in the region. [laughter]. >> Although if if the past is prologue, the.

IRGC doesn't seem too receptive to that. message. We'll see how it goes. Trey, thank you for the update. Appreciate it. All right, Sand, let's bring in retired. Lieutenant General Keith Kellogg. Uh, we. want to talk about Iran, but first of. all, what do you make of that? I I mean, that was news to me. I know Driscoll. I. didn't know that he resigned or at least. tried to. >> Yeah, look, I this whole thing is about. army leadership and the fact of the. matter is just not only Driscoll's. leaving, but they you saw those what. Jennifer just said about the army. generals. The army generals need to stay. out of politics. There's a good. individual in the wings rating right now.

who's the vice chief of staff of the. army, a guy named Chris Lane, who I know. very well. He's he hasn't been nominated. yet to be a chief, but he's doing great. And and I think the fact of the matter. is that he will bring the army along. And I think what's a little bit. unsettling right here is they've got. army generals involved in in basically. politics. Stay out of it. And it's not. helpful that civilian leaders drag the. generals into it like you just showed on. your graphic. >> Right. So it's unfortunate, but Driscoll. doesn't feel he can work with the. Secretary of War. He needs to go.

>> Yeah. All right. Well, we'll see what. happens there. The president, you say. it, hasn't accepted the. >> resolution this morning yet. >> Okay. Well, we'll see what happens with. that. All right. On to Iran. President. Trump uh putting out a true social just. a little while ago. Some news about the. current attacks that are going on. I. think Bondrabas Keshum Island. The. president said a failed nation of Iran. retaliates for this very justified. attack. They will be hit again at a much. higher harder and higher level, but it. will not be the biggest attack of them. all. That's waiting in the wings. And. when it's over, there will be very. little left of the Islamic Republic of.

Iran. I mean, the president's not going. to sit back and just let Iran retaliate. Now, in his first administration, after. he took out Solommani, Iran retaliated. uh against one of our bases. And the. president said, "Okay, that's it. We're. done." But he's not doing that anymore. If Iran retaliates, they get hit back. again. >> Well, the first time, and I was there. when it happened with Solommani, >> the fact is we got alerted through the. State Department that they were going to. shoot, but they're going to shoot at. dirt. They really didn't hit anything. We had some soldiers with PTSD or got. hit with afterwards, but nothing really.

tangible was hit. This time, you know, the president's hitting pretty hard back. at him. And people need just kind of. relax that this is going to continue. because Iran's got a huge ballistic. missile fleet still probably 2,000. missiles left and they're going to keep. going back and forth and the president's. going to continue to take out their. missile fleet. You know, they're led by. a theocratic leadership. They Iran. These guys are just basically nuts and. they should understand that they've got. no chance of winning this fight. militarily and the president is. strangling economically as well.

>> They've got a missile fleet supported by. China with the BU missile system for the. accuracy. It's like our GPS learned from. 1991 about how important GPS was. But I. think what the American people need to. realize this is going to continue. The. president is going to retaliate. But. sooner or later, as he made a comment. about changing the dynamics of the war, he's gonna have to do something a little. bit different. >> So, Scott Besson is at the uh the G20 uh. finance minister's meeting in Asheville, North Carolina. Our Ed Lawrence talked. to him about this idea of squeezing the.

regime economically, how long it will. take, and what the ultimate goal is. Listen to this exchange here. >> Is there a time frame on when their. economy could collapse? Uh no it it's. that we have the blockade and we we are. going to continue exerting pressure and. we we've had very good discussions uh. here already and uh you know I think it. could be within weeks or months and uh. you know the economy doesn't have to. collapse it just we just have to have uh.

the regime come to their senses. All. right. So, this administration does seem. to be comfortable allowing the squeeze. to take place. And as Besson said, they. don't doesn't need to collapse. They. just need to come to their senses. There's not a grand history or tradition. of that among the IRGC. So, is it going. to come to economic collapse and then. people go out in the streets and the. IRGC says screw it. We're not going to. shoot our own people because we're not. getting paid either. >> Well, I think the fact of the matter, Secretary Benson made that comment about. it may take months. memories had.

when you look at the Iranian people are. really being hurt by this. Look, when. you look at the exchange rate. >> for $1, it's2 million than ours or. reals. That's insane. Their inflation. rates now at minimum is at least 90% or. more. And they the the government. doesn't really care about their people. No. So this the squeeze is on. They're. going to keep doing it. The president's. got a right to economically break them. Uh and and he's doing that. But this is. one of those you have to tell the. American people, "Relax, guys. This is.

going to take a while to get there. And. in the meantime, they're going to keep. shooting missiles at us because they've. got them. We're going to continue to. retaliate. And as long as you got a. theocratic regime in place, the people. may change that regime, which I think. they need to do is get out of the. streets, but it's their regime and they. need to do it.". >> The the voices in opposition across the. street in Capitol Hill have been oddly. quiet lately. recent attempted attacks against. commercial shipping lanes in the Strait. of Hormuz. So, this is on once again. this afternoon and this evening in the. region. Chief foreign correspondent Trey. Yinx spoke with President Trump earlier. and he reports live for us from Tel. Aviv. Hi, Trey. >> Yeah, Martha, good afternoon. Currently, the United States is conducting. extensive air strikes against. southwestern Iran next to the Strait of. Hormuz. A variety of different targets.

being hit. And again, this appears to be. a medium range target list for the. United States trying to decrease the. threats toward vessels in this critical. waterway and also retaliate for the. attack on US forces earlier this week. I. did speak with President Trump earlier. who said a new warning to Iran, saying. if they do respond, they will be hit. much harder. The president went on to. say, "This is a very big hit today. If. it goes a third time, they're going to. be totally wiped out as a country." In. terms of a possible agreement with the.

Iranians, the president said, "I think. an agreement with them isn't worth the. paper it's written on. We gave them a. lot of chances." And finally, the. president added, "The USS George. Washington is loaded to the gills. We. are loaded up." the president talking. there about the new aircraft carrier. that arrived in theater last week to. replace the USS Abraham Lincoln. So. stepping back here, what we know. tonight, the United States is striking. targets in Iran. The Iranians are. threatening to retaliate and the. president is warning Iran against doing. this. We have seen similar warnings from.

President Trump in the past against the. Iranians, talking about wiping out their. country. But again, more than 6 months. into this conflict, there is no sense. that we are anywhere close to an. agreement in the region. The president. telling Fox News it can't even be worth. the paper that it's written on and. ultimately this tit fortat the back and. forth that we are seeing right now near. to the straight of Hormuz is expected to. continue. member of the Iran Policy Project at the. Jewish Institute for National Security. of America. Admiral Harard grew up in. Iran. Admiral, it's always good to have. you with us. Uh your reaction to. this latest action, military action that. the United States is taking against Iran. today. >> I think it's going after everything they. have that can project power. There's no. doubt about it. And if you think about. the the president's comments that's. aligned with his statement he made in.

the summer of '05 and in March of ' 06. when we started this. I think. negotiations are over. there's no return. to theou and he's going to look for. unconditional surrender. That was always. his intent and now that he's tied both. military power and economic power. together, I think he's got a sound. strategy and can accomplish that. objective. >> Yeah, I mean that may require a change. in regime um because they're pulling at.

every lever of the economy, of their. military strength, absolutely every area. that they can hit. But I want to get. your thoughts on this because today. there is a meeting between uh Russian. President Putin and Iranian President. Pzeski at the Shanghai Cooperation. Summit in Kyrgyzstan. Um here is a. picture of the two of them. President. Putin saying, "Russia stands in. solidarity with the Iranian people. We. admire your courage." He went on to say, "We are trying to provide you with the. assistance you need. As we've discussed,

we are supplying you with the necessary. goods, says Putin to Pzeskian." uh China. has also um you know sort of uh had the. same tone uh at these meetings. Your. thoughts on that? >> Well, now you're see political power. come to play and that's exactly what. this is. Iran has always been a. surrogate of Russia and a surrogate of. China. They both have strategic. interests in this. So, while the. president's applied both economic and. military power, you're going to start.

seeing the political power come to play, including his future visit to China. So, you're seeing the Russians double down. They need this ally. This is their. second front against the West, their. first being Ukraine. So, this is. essential to this. And Putin needs to do. start think start thinking as well as. the rest of the Russian people. what. does Russia look like postin? And so. he's setting the stage here to make sure. this ally and their front against the r.

the west stays supported. And so this. conflict is much bigger than just the US. and Iran. This is about Russia. It's. about China. It's about Ukraine. All of. this is tied together. >> Yeah. Uh 100%. and uh you you know the. region so well having lived there and. having um been uh the head of US Central. Command. What's your assessment right. now of of the position that Iran is in? Because we're hearing that more ships.

are making it through um the sort of uh. western side of the straight on the Oman. side. Ships are getting through and we. know that there's a lot a ton of. economic pressure that the Treasury. Secretary has put on them. How long. before they'll break if you think they. will? Oh, I know they will. There's no doubt. about it. It is inevitable. We've. crossed that tipping point already. Look, and you can look at what the oil. markets are doing. They've remained. stable. 808 $81 a barrel. Iran is going.

to continue to lose resources. They have. none now, but more and more people can't. put gas in their cars. People won't be. able to heat their homes in the. wintertime. Food will become an issue. All this economic pressure tied with. this continual military campaign will. inevitably draw the regime to the ground. and not so much externally but I think. more importantly internally the people. will rise up against the regime when.

they have the ability to do that and. there are things that can help on that. side of the equation as well. I think. all that is starting to come together. and you've seen a full uh economic, military and political campaign coales. against the regime of Iran. >> Yeah, it's always interesting to get. your take on it. Um because of this. military action that we've seen this. afternoon likely we have we do see that. oil prices are up around 90, but as you. point out um they they have sort of.

hovered in that region between 80 and 90. as we've seen the back and forth here. Uh Admiral Harward, thank you very much.
