Mother Realizes Her Boyfriend Just Buried Their Son Alive
Oh god. >> 1321. >> We're back. >> Dickens to Sarge. I have the stroller. Like why would you eat a strawberry or.
two if it doesn't make sense? >> What about giving the kid to somebody. for dope? I mean that's happened. >> I don't want to at the expense of sound. and grim. We should probably see if. there's any blood on any of these rocks. around these clothes. >> Did John come back with the stroller? >> He did not come back with the stroller. >> This dude is a strange mother. He's. manipulated. >> That he killed this dude.
Sheriff's Office. Sheriff's Office. Put. your hands up. >> It all starts earlier this year on a. Saturday afternoon. John is on his way. to the nearest Dollar General with his. two children in the stroller. Nothing. seemingly out of the ordinary. In.
reality, what happens over the next few. minutes would change this family's lives. forever and start the clock on saving a. young boy's life. >> 911, what's the address of the. emergency? >> Hi. Um, I miss my son's missing. >> Okay. and tell me exactly what happened. >> So last night my fiance went for a walk. with uh my daughter and my baby. He came.
back from the walk. I was like, "Where's. Junior?" He said, "You with my mom. I. was trying to surprise you." And this. morning he changed his story all day. long. I've been calling his mom all day. today. >> Crystal, what's your son's name? >> His name is John Junior. I'm not at the. house right now. The father is at the. house right now and he's not mentally. stable. >> On the line is Crystal reporting her. 11-month-old son JJ missing. Yet,
dispatch quickly notices some key. details don't add up, not least why she. isn't at home right now. And when police. look into Crystal and her fianceé J's. backgrounds, that's when they realize. their son JJ could be in serious danger. John has an active felony warrant after. his arrest. His record includes battery, resisting an officer, concealing his. identity, and repeated probation.
violations. Unbeknownst to officers, that barely scratches the surface of. what police will soon allege Jon has. done this time. Somewhere in this town, his son has been partially buried alive, and officers are on a ticking clock to. find him before it's too late. Around midnight, officers make their way. to the couple's camper. Once they. arrive, deputies spot Crystal pulling up. in a car with another man. And as.
investigators prepare to question them, they're about to get the first of many. unusual leads that would kick off a race. against time to save JJ. >> Okay. Hey, real quick, Crystal, can I. confirm some of your information that I. got earlier? Um, did John come back with the stroller? >> He did not come back with. >> He only came back with. >> He walked in. He walked in and I was. like I see that eye. I Where's Junior?
>> He's like my mom and I surprise you. >> Okay. And that's what that's what his. story was that his mom came and picked. John Junior up. >> She did not. I. >> But that's what he that's what he told. you. >> Yeah. >> That's what he was saying was John uh. Susan came and picked John Junior up. >> Yeah. >> Does he have a phone? Does John have a. phone? >> Does John have a phone with him that he. usually takes? He had a phone with him. yesterday, >> but I could can't find her. >> Okay. Dawn, right?
>> Yeah. >> Would you be willing to drive Crystal. when it gets to the office? >> Yeah. Okay. I don't know where your. office is, but Well, I'm going to have. people. for months. >> That way we can get the kids out of the. cold and we can get push that down and. get a good interview with her and that. way it's kind of more controlled and you. know Yeah. died though. >> Yeah. >> She takes care of him, feeds him, takes. care of him, puts the roof over his. head, and he beats on her.
>> This is 66-year-old Don Vernon, the man. Crystal went to after her fight with. John, explaining why she wasn't at the. house when she made the 911 call. But. that only answers one of the suspicions. surrounding Crystal. And these officers. are about to spot the other massive gap. in her story. One they need to make. sense of if they want to find JJ in. time. >> Yeah. So, she's saying last night when. he left came back or with the. four-year-old and the 11month-old came.
back with just the four-year-old. She's. saying that the dad was being starting. to be towards her. Well, she's not she's. actually not really hysterical. I mean, as far as like her emotional state right. now, it's not what I would expect. either. So, it's just it's very very. code 20. My question is, why don't you. call in last night? You know what I. mean? Like, what what is going on? Like, why do you wait 24 hours? This question. surrounding Crystal's delayed response. is one she'll have to answer later or.
risk becoming entangled in something no. mother would ever want. While several. officers escort Crystal and Dawn to the. station, others stay behind and wait for. backup before confronting Jon at the. camper. With suspicion growing by the. minute and an active warrant already out. for Jon, police aren't about to rely on. his cooperation. If they find Jon and JJ. safe inside, the case is over. If not, some of the darkest, most traumatizing.
days lie ahead for these unsuspecting. officers. >> John, this is the San County Sheriff's. Office. You need to come out with your. hands up open and empty. We are not. leaving. I'm not here for your warrants. I'm here to check on John Jr. I'd like. to know where he is and I'd like to know. that he's healthy and safe.
San County Sheriff's Office, you need to. come to the door. Do it now. Go get my sledge out of the back.
Sheriff's office. Sheriff's office. John. John, >> put your hands up. >> Hey, nobody hear me. >> John, sir. >> Hey, keep your hands where I can see. you. John, >> roll over. >> Roll over. Get your tires on.
>> Roll over. Face away. Face away. >> Okay. Face away from me. >> What are you going for? Why? Let me sir. I just my back handover. My back is. broken, sir. >> My back is broken, sir. I can surgery, sir. >> Hey, roll over. >> Roll over and we'll get you figured out. >> Sir, behind your back. >> Other hand. >> Okay, put that other hand back. >> Put your other hand back right now.
131. >> I don't think. my name's a job, bro. >> What's your name? >> My name? >> Yo, your name's. >> I don't have a name, man. >> All right, let's get out of here. >> I'm here for your son. >> I don't have a son, bro. I don't have a. son. >> Hey, let's stand up. >> My name is Susan, son.
>> Your name's not Susan. Hey, your. >> name's your Susan. >> Hey, let's put our feet underneath us. >> John, >> let's get our feet underneath us. Please. don't. Please don't pull me. Let me. stand up. >> Keep coming. My property right here. >> Okay. Where's my. >> Where's John at then? at the door and instead.
get out of here. >> Let's get out of here then. I don't. We're not going to sit in here forever. >> Okay, let's get out of here. Come on. >> Let's stand up. >> We're going outside. >> Walk this way. After successfully detaining Jon, officers search the trailer for any sign. of JJ, but they find nothing. What makes. the situation so unsettling for officers.
is Jon's rambling, including his claim. that he doesn't even know who JJ is. Investigators don't have time to figure. out whether he's under the influence, putting on an act, or something else. entirely. And as officers prepare to. question him further, Jon is about to. surprise them and shifts the focus of. the investigation onto someone police. are already dealing with. >> John, >> you don't know where Junior's at at all? >> I'm Junior.
>> You're Junior? So, where is your son at? The one. >> I have surgery. >> The one you were pushing out in a. stroller earlier. >> I yesterday. >> Where is he at? >> I don't know. John, I'm so. baby John. >> John, listen. >> I'm not. exactly who you are. You're John Hannah. Where is he at? >> He ran my friend. >> What friend? >> Gypsy to his house. You want the. address? >> Yeah, I want the address.
>> Like I hate him. I won't name it. I. don't. >> Is that your friend? You call him Gypsy? >> Yes, sir. >> Okay. Where does Gypsy live? >> I have nothing. You tell me Gypsy's address right now. Where does Where does Gypsy live? >> 77. 281. I can't do that. You know, I thought it. was the door and some I ask myself, I don't know. I have a war. >> Okay.
>> Despite his crazy ramblings, John just. gave investigators a name, Gypsy. Officers transport him for medical. evaluation, where doctors may finally be. able to explain his bizarre behavior. With all key suspects and witnesses. finally in police custody, investigators. need to find a way to get them talking. Something easier said than done, and it. has to happen soon because an unsettling. discovery is about to cut their window. for finding JJ in half.
>> Bring duct cake for him. Got all these. little weird voices. >> I don't have a name. Who? >> You don't have a name? >> 16. >> You're 16? >> Yeah. >> This looks like he intentionally smashed. the phone. >> While deputies at the scene search for. any clues that could lead them to JJ 4. miles away at the station, Detective. Gabriel Salazar is tasked with taking. over the investigation. As a newly.
appointed detective, Salazar's first. objective is to interview Crystal and. Dawn. This time in a more formal. setting. Both have some explaining to. do, and investigators hope either one. could hold the key to finding JJ, but. they have to tread carefully. Push too. hard, and either one of them could. suddenly lawyer up. And what Salazar is. about to hear will take him completely. by surprise, leaving him unsure whether. it's a false lead or whether the scope. of the investigation is about to double.

With that said, let's return to. Detective Salazar, who's about to hear. something that could expand the scope of. this already complex investigation even. further. >> And this ain't the first time this has. happened with me. >> Oh, really? >> As far as the way he was treating her,
>> really? >> Yeah. This has been an ongoing thing for. the last. at least the last 5 months. I know, maybe even longer. >> Okay. I said, "As long as you stay. around that dude, either something. really bad's going to happen or he's. just going to drag you and the kids. right into a hole with him." I know, I. know, but I love him. I said love and. being the way you are and the kids treat. the way you are. He'll be gone a long. time. Go figure. >> Hi, Crystal.
>> I'm Detective Salar. >> I tried to talk to John, but he's kind. of all all over the place. Can you kind. of give me some insight into what's. going on with John? >> He goes through episodes every now and. then. I got a voice. So I called this. doctor this morning. I make him an. appointment and see what we could do. like right now. He says that is having. episode. >> Mhm. >> This dude is a strange mother. He's.
manipulative. >> He'll act one way when you guys are. around. As soon as you guys leave, he. acts a whole different way towards her. >> Really? >> I don't understand that. >> Do you do you think it's drug induced or. do you think it's like just screws. loose? >> He's got screws loose. A few years I. guess about two and a half, three years. ago. I guess he had got in debt to one of the. cartels. He put a bullet in the back of his head, but he lived through it. >> Oh, >> yeah. He was a little scrambling before.
I knew him before he got shot and I knew. him afterwards. >> Okay. >> And the difference in him is like night. and day. >> Really? >> Yeah. I mean, it's like his whole. Demir's old personality. It's like what. happened to him, anybody that's with. him, he takes it out on. This ain't the. first one that I've been with with him. >> So, why didn't you call this in sooner? Why didn't you call? >> I I was trying to get answer. and be argue with me. You're not letting. me do anything. Controlling me all day.
>> So, I mean, it's been 24 hours since. anyone seen Junior. >> Yeah, cuz I thought he was with his mom. I've been calling her all day. >> Yeah. >> To find out he he was her and telling. him, call his mom, tell her bring the. baby back. >> Yeah. >> He wouldn't do it. >> What Don just revealed about John's. alleged dealings with the cartel could. take the investigation in an entirely. new direction. For the time being, Detective Salazar has no way to verify. this connection. And with nothing.
concrete tying either Crystal or Dawn to. JJ's disappearance, he's forced to let. them go. Meanwhile, officers back at the. scene continue canvasing the surrounding. area when they spot a set of footprints. leading away from the camper. And as. they follow this subtle trail, they're. beginning to sense this may be one of. the most psychologically challenging. cases they've ever faced. Yeah, that kid's up here somewhere. Think. >> so. I think he's right in there. The way.
that he circled. >> That's weird that she didn't call this. in yesterday, dude. >> Yep, there it is. Right there. >> Yeah, this one's pretty good, dude. Some oblique lighting on it. >> Isn't that Dickens? Oh god. Dickens to sergeant. I have the. stroller.
>> We start taking some photographs of the. area and do a campus in the area. Just. uh kind of be careful where you walk. Okay. >> Direct. child's not in the stroll stroller. though. >> And I was like, well, is it is it our. guy? And then when you sent me that. picture, I was like, oh, that's our guy. Like why would you leave a stroller here. too if it doesn't make sense trying to. get rid of evidence.
dude? >> Yeah. >> Yeah. I don't want to at the expense of. sounding grim. We should probably see if. there's any blood on any of these rocks. around these clothes. I don't know dude. Sometimes. sometimes gets weird. Yeah, this looks like he intentionally.
smashed the phone. >> Oh, yeah. >> With John's phone found completely. smashed next to JJ's stroller, detectives are left with two. possibilities. Either Jon did something. to JJ and tried to cover it up, or. someone is doing a phenomenal job of. setting him up as the primary suspect, but with darkness making the search. increasingly difficult, deputies are. ordered to pull back and wait until.
sunrise. Unbeknownst to anyone at the. scene, in less than 12 hours, investigators will make a very different. kind of discovery. one that will change. the reputation of this small town. forever. The next day, local news has picked up. the story of JJ's disappearance. With so. little information available, fear. begins spreading throughout the. community, leaving locals unsure whether. a killer may be on the loose among them.
With time working against them, investigators split their efforts. Some. detectives begin speaking with J's. neighbors. Others wait for doctors to. clear Jon for questioning while most of. the force is tasked with retracing his. movements. Whichever breakthrough comes. first. With Jon still at the San Juan. Regional Medical Center, an unusual. finding involving his brain would. emerge. One experts can't quite put. their finger on just yet. At 9:00 a.m., deputies arrive in the last place Jon.
allegedly took the children, the nearby. Dollar General. And what they find there. would only strengthen the theory of a. meticulous cover up. Something that. strangely would require a far more. calculated state of mind than Jon has. shown so far. >> Huh? >> Uh, Saturday 4:58 in the evening. your guys'.
trash can doesn't come get picked up. right over the weekend. >> Um, >> uh, Saturday, but it's usually. >> Do you mind watching this game? And if. you get something, call me and then. we're going to keep dumping. Okay, >> I'll type this draft. Thank you. Hey, boss. You the manager. >> Hey, um, come from the sheriff's office. We're looking for a missing baby. Um, >> eight. >> Yeah. Um, kid was last seen last.
Saturday. Yeah, just ask some of your. crews if there are surveillance videos. Um, we're checking all the dumpsters cuz. >> Okay. Yeah. >> Uh, if you don't mind, we're just going. to jump in your dumpster real quick. Make sure there's nothing thrown in. there. >> But you signed up or pad. >> dig through trash cans.
Is that looks like blood? >> Yeah, exactly. That's what I'm saying. Kid's pillow. Two random pillows in here. It's crazy. though. Just put it with it and lay it. next to it. In the piles of trash, investigators uncover something. chilling. Two small pillows, one stained.
with what appears to be blood. At the. same time, investigators uncover nearby. CCTV footage, which captures Jon pushing. the stroller, uh, sighting several. neighbors would go on to describe as. highly suspicious. The evidence is. photographed and sent to the lab with. detectives hoping they may finally have. enough to make Jon crack. Unaware of these recent discoveries, deputies at the station receive a call. Officers finally get in touch with JJ's.
grandmother, Susan, the woman Jon. claimed he had taken JJ to. And as. investigators pick up the phone, this. could very well be their last chance to. hear some good news. the police and fire. dispatch. How can I help you? >> Yes, my name is Susan Hannon. I was just. on the phone with officer or deputy. Irwin here in the Plat County. I don't. know how to take I don't know. The the. point is there's a infant that's missing. and they they're they crazy on drugs or.
something. I don't know what's going on. >> Susan, I'm going to get your information. passed along to a deputy and have them. give you a call. Okay. >> Okay, that would be great. >> If anything changes, just give us a call. back. Okay. >> Upon confirming JJ was never with his. grandmother, investigators realize no. one knows where JJ is, and it's up to. them to find him. With time quickly running out and. officers at the scene coming up empty,
Detective Salazar turns his attention to. Jon. And this is when he learned. something unusual. According to his. medical records, Jon had suffered a head. injury in a serious car accident just a. week earlier. Suddenly, there seems to. be an explanation for his bizarre. behavior up to this point. But something. still doesn't add up to Salazar. Jon's. behavior is inconsistent, at times. appearing perfectly normal. Once Jon is. brought to the San Juan County Sheriff's.
Office, Salazar realizes the dilemma. he's facing. If Jon is genuinely. unstable, pushing him too hard could. backfire, potentially leading to a false. or unreliable confession. But if he is. in fact putting on an act, Salazar may. have only minutes to expose it. And as. the two sit down, the entire. investigation rests on what happens. next. What. are you using? >> I'm I can tell you're using something. Okay. So, what you're not getting in.
trouble. supposed to go once in a while. >> The thing is going on because I legit. had a legit back surgery. >> Yeah. And my attitude was knocked out. >> Okay. So, John, I'm Detective Salazar. Okay. >> Yes, sir. >> Do you know why you're here? >> Yes, sir. >> Why Why are you here? The thing the. thing about it is um they're looking for. their son and they say does this you.
have you you have a son that I want for. your son. I am the son. >> You're the son. >> Yes sir. >> You're Crystal's son. >> Yes sir. >> That doesn't make sense. That doesn't. you can't be Crystal's son. >> I'm not Crystal. >> I know you're not Crystal. >> Crystal have a son. >> Crystal doesn't have a son. Wait, you. see what you think? Can I ask you one. thing before I say anything? >> Yeah, go ahead. >> I know that I want cuz I war Mexico.
>> Uhhuh. >> I'll tell you my real name. Okay. >> Okay. >> Okay. >> I don't have a name. You feel me? >> You don't have a name? >> 16. >> You're 16? >> Yes. Oh, okay. Where's Junior? >> I don't know. >> Based on what we're we're learning, you. were the last one to see him. >> No [ __ ] No. So,
>> so you're not going to see. >> I don't. >> Why are you seeing pushing a stroller on. cameras down the road? >> Okay. I was seeing my daughter. And. >> who's your daughter? >> My daughter's Skyla. And the other. daughter, too. So, if I go watch that video, it's. going to show you pushing your daughter. in a stroller. It's not going to show me. anything else. >> Absolutely. >> I don't know. No, Junior. >> Well, you just got you done. >> The only Junior is my dad. They call me. Junior.
My guy calls me Junior. Junior, right? He called me Junior. Okay. Go stand up. You. >> No, she. a. lie to you. After Jon's incoherent rambling, Salazar. ends the interview rather than continues. questioning him. At this point, detectives are left questioning if Jon. is genuinely mentally unstable or if. some of his behavior is calculated, and.
depending on what happens next, his. mental state could become a major issue. in the case against him. Back in the area surrounding the ditch, the entire police department is in. action. Considering JJ has now been. missing for several days, investigators. begin to fear that time for good news. has run out. And it wouldn't be long. before they come across a final. discovery. One that would give the. county closure, but leave a lasting scar.
on those who found it. >> So, the last known track we know for. sure is right here. Kind of you see that. dirt path? He goes up the hill right. here and then he I I think he turns this. way and then he comes back down. I think right here in this area. >> So that would be this area right here. >> Maybe. >> that's the other side of the hill.
>> Has somebody else come and talk to you. at all? >> No. Are you kind of aware of what we're. looking for? >> Yeah. I'm sorry. I thought you guys. >> Oh, yeah. >> Oh, okay. Okay. >> just like walked the entirety of that. ditch. >> Suppressed match. >> Um. the from the start of Dollar General or. from which end? >> Either way. Not that I'm aware of.
because like I said, Salazar and I. worked down to. >> We have a tracking team on their way. there. >> When you when you came over the fence to. meet us, we went to the back to the west. and that's where we ran into the ditch. right there and we crossed the fence. there and that's where that shoe was in. the ditch, but the other one was up on. the deal and they've been there for a. while. But we had some shoe impressions. there, but nothing that matched this. stuff. >> Yeah. Or and and no stroller tracks. either. So, wherever.
I wonder. what. >> Well, I was just thinking I wonder if I. push down to the road there and just get. on either side of the road real quick. and just see if I got a track trap and. check it and see. Let me go check that. off. Huh? Sorry, I was looking down for tracks.
I don't mean not. little kids stuff. >> Yeah, let me send this to Salazar. cuz we got to. >> He was wearing like. black track pants. Uh, >> I saw that. They almost look like. motorcycle. >> Let me Let me double check. Hang on. But. they weren't red. >> But these are turned inside out. It.
looks like. >> I found him. >> The baby. >> Yeah. >> Yeah, cuz we got pants right here. >> God damn it. That's his pants then, dude. It's right. here. >> We were literally right there last. night.
>> We were following his track this way. >> Command. >> God. >> Track two. Found. >> track two. Track one or whatever. We. found him. >> Poor kid. You have a [ __ ] chance, dude. Partially buried in the dirt, Officer. Decker discovers JJ's deceased body, medical examiners are quickly called to.
the scene where they immediately notice. a large wound to his head before. transporting his body for an autopsy. While detectives work to secure the. scene, Detective Salazar returns to JJ's. parents, neither of whom he feels has. been as cooperative as they should have. been. On top of that, the past few days. will have left some of his men with. trauma they'll carry for years to come. And as for this final confrontation, Salazar is here for one last piece of. the puzzle.
So, I got an update from our co-workers. I don't have good news. >> I don't have good news. We found Junior. >> What? >> He's deceased. >> What? WHAT?
Do you want. >> So I'm not sure. He was kind of in that same area where. we found the other stuff. So we're still working on this to try to.
figure out what's going on. What. happened? >> I found JJ. >> Okay. >> Do you know what I'm about to show you? >> Yep. >> What? >> JJ. >> Yeah. >> Tell me what's on this picture. J. >> Hm. >> JJ.
>> What about JJ? >> He's in that picture. >> Yeah. >> Do you know how I found him? >> No, I don't know. I don't know what's in. that picture. >> I found him in the same area I found all. this. >> Why is his shirt here? >> Crystal told me this. This is the shirt. he was wearing. Why is he not wearing. it?
>> Junior did have a shirt on, but why. doesn't he have his shirt now? >> Did you take that shirt off of Junior? >> No. >> Who did? >> Junior took his own shirt off. >> Yeah. >> Seems a little bit too young to be. taking his own shirt off. I. >> think I know what happened, John.
>> Yeah, maybe true. >> Tell me what happened then. >> This boy right here is yours and. Crystal's son. >> And he's not coming home. Oh, >> crap. cuz he's dead. >> I know he's How you know he's home? Me? Well, for record I know that.
we're both there. >> Did you hit him? >> Um, not not not technically. >> Did he fall? Did you throw him? >> Yeah. Don't fall those ones. >> What? >> Never those ones. Then what' you do? What's this horrible mistake that you. did? >> I ran. >> You ran.
>> Yeah, I ran. >> Oh my god. Oh my god. Oh my god. Oh, for. sure. Off the door. Why? Why'd you leave him there, John? Why? That part. How long is the truth been?
I know. I know. I know. Stop. Hey, >> hold up before you ask a question. I don't know what the. >> Who said I got them? >> Hey, John. >> I'm going to get you back. Okay. >> Um, I need your shoes.
>> I got shoes on. What's up? You. >> got shoes? You got shoes on? I got my socks on, though. >> Yeah, you came like that. >> Yeah, we both came like that. Just slow down. from around here, Tom. Walk this way. Walk back this way. >> While Crystal appears distraught by the. news of her son's death, John. disturbingly shows little emotion at.
all. Although he admits JJ was injured, he never confesses or tells detectives. exactly how. Instead, investigators are. left to piece together what they believe. happened through witness statements and. the evidence they've collected. Over the course of several weeks, Jon. had reportedly grown increasingly. frustrated with JJ, describing him as. his most difficult child. At. approximately 400 p.m. that Saturday,
Jon took both children out in the. stroller. At some point during the. outing, investigators suspect Jon's. frustration with JJ escalated into. violence, resulting in a severe blow to. JJ's head. Rather than getting JJ the medical. attention he desperately needed, investigators believe Jon realized how. seriously injured his son was and chose. to bury him. One week after Jon's final. interview, investigators would uncover.
one final disturbing detail. Around the. time they believed Jon was concealing. JJ's body, Jon had called Crystal. multiple times, but not one of those. calls was answered.
