>> Out of nowhere, Officer Hair is shot. multiple times before being shoved into. the passenger seat as the [music]. suspect hijacks his cruiser with Hair. still inside. He's going to be all right. >> As panic begins to set in among the. backup officers, Officer Otero tries to. remain hopeful, unaware that his friend. is already miles away trapped inside his. own cruiser with the very man who just. shot him. And right now the suspect has. every reason to believe he's completely. in control. He's convinced the three. shots he fired have left Hair unable to. do anything. And with Hair fighting for. every breath, there's little reason for. him to think otherwise. But Hair isn't.
gone yet. And with what little. consciousness he still has left, he. manages to do one final thing to let his. friends know that something is terribly. wrong. >> Narcom 966 10-99. Narcom 966 10-99. The alarm. confirms their worst suspicions, and. with dispatch tracking Hare's cruiser as. it continues moving west, officers race. after it. They know they can't afford to.
lose any more time because if Hare is. really hurt, every second could decide. whether he survives. >> 10-4 240. >> 10-4. Uh, negative star. Uh, looks like I see a vehicle here on. the frontage road. And no no motion from inside vehicle. >> Moments into the chase, Officer Esparza. is caught off guard when Hare's cruiser. suddenly steers off the road and. crashes. Esparza pulls over and calls. for other officers to provide backup,
but by the time they reach the cruiser, the most important part of this pursuit. has already happened, miles behind them.
>> I got blood. >> Upon approaching the cruiser, the. officers' worst fears become much harder. to dismiss when they find the vehicle.
empty with blood across the passenger. seat. It now seems increasingly possible. that the man Hare initially stopped to. help may have hijacked his cruiser, badly injured him, and left him. somewhere along the highway. The problem. is, officers have no idea where either. men could be, or just how badly Hare. might be hurt. So, they begin spreading. out from the crash site, searching the. surrounding area for any sign of [music]. either of them. But, while officers can.
only guess what happened to Hare, the. answer lies miles behind them. >> Northbound. 3 located the unit off of the frontage. road. It's going to be I-40 at the 305. frontage road mile marker 14. 6 1099. Narcom 966 1099. >> 963 Santa Rosa. >> 963. >> Any word from 966?

And although Harris. still breathing, every minute he spends. out there alone is making his chances of. survival slimmer. Harris now been lying on the side of the. highway bleeding out for over 45.
minutes. Multiple police units have. passed nearby, yet somehow no one has. managed to find him until Officer Garcia. decides to check one of the nearby exits. where he's about to make the most. horrifying discovery of his life. >> 1030. >> 961 Narcom 961 Narcom out with 966 off. the 311 exit. He's here. He's here, brother. Keep fighting, dude. Don't give up. Don't give up, dude. Come on, bro. He's into the truck. He's still. breathing. He's still in this. Keep Keep fighting, dude. You're going. to be good.
>> While officers try to comfort Hair, they. know the situation is critical [music]. and any relief they might have felt. after finally finding him quickly turns. into dread. For nearly an hour, Hair has. been left to himself with gunshot wounds. to his head and neck causing [music]. severe blood loss. But all hope isn't. lost yet because Hair still has a pulse.
and could [music] still make it through. And as the ambulance arrives shortly. after to continue the fight to [music]. save Hair's life, every unit involved. knows they need to find the person. responsible. So New Mexico State Police. turn the surrounding stretch of highway. into a massive search zone. They set up. a command post near Newkirk while. tactical officers begin searching the. abandoned structures and open terrain. surrounding the Interstate. For now, they're searching for a man they know. almost nothing about and that's what.
makes him so dangerous because what. officers are yet to figure out is that. the man they're chasing is a violent. offender with one goal, eliminating the. people he believes have wronged him. And. nearly 1,500 miles away, another victim. is still waiting to be discovered while. the suspect himself is already making. his way towards two more people who are. next on his killing spree. After roughly an hour, the highway is.
shut down and processed [music] as a. crime scene while the search for the. suspect continues with no sign of him. That's when the officers get a tragic. update [music] from the hospital. Officer Justin Christopher Hair has. passed away. He had suffered two gunshot. wounds [music] to the head and another. to the neck. Hair leaves behind his. pregnant partner and two young daughters. as the case now takes a far darker turn.
Police are now dealing with the homicide. of a law enforcement officer. So, multiple agencies join forces to search. for anything that could point them. [music] towards the suspect. And in not. far from Hair's crashed cruiser, they. begin a strange trail of abandoned. [music] items. Near a fence, officers. recover an EMS jacket, a taser, a. lighter, and two cell phones. Those. discoveries not only point officers. towards the direction the suspect fled, but also suggest something concerning.
That the same person they're looking for. could somehow be connected to the. medical field. And that connection is. about to start making a lot more sense. because [music] after the phones and. items are secured for examination, one. group of investigators begins working to. recover Hair's body cam and dash cam. footage while another returns to the. stranded BMW. And when they run the. car's plate, they discover a disturbing. connection to the EMS equipment found. earlier. The BMW belongs to 52-year-old.
Phoneisha Mecado Four, a paramedic who. lived hundreds of miles away in South. Carolina. And there's one major problem. She's currently reported missing. Over the following hours, investigators. realized that in order to figure out who. really killed Hair, they first need to. find out what happened to Phonecia, who. by this point had already been missing. for nearly 2 days. So, they reach out to.
authorities in South Carolina trying to. understand how a missing paramedic's car. ended up nearly 1,500 mi away at the. scene of a murdered officer. That. investigation will soon lead them to. Phonecia's roommate, Emily Bales, along. with crucial CCTV footage that will. bring police much closer to identifying. exactly who they're dealing with. Without that CCTV footage, this. investigation gets a lot harder. And. it's a reminder of how valuable reliable.

Phonecia's roommate, Emily, because what. she's about to tell the officers on the. phone will reveal the far deadlier. threat anyone in New Mexico could. potentially cross paths with. >> When was the last time you saw uh.
Phonecia? >> We went um we went to bed about 9:30. on Tuesday night. >> Okay, do you know if anybody came to. your guys' house throughout the night? >> Yeah, um the neighbor came. >> Who's Who's the neighbor? >> Jeremy. >> Jeremy? >> Yeah. He came in and um we had this bed. [clears throat] I mean, basically we. were woken up again and he came and got. in bed. >> Okay, he got in bed with you?
>> Yeah. >> Okay, and then was he there the whole. night or did he leave? >> I got up at 5:30. >> Okay. >> And he left He left at 6:30. He He left. with me. >> Okay. >> Like I watched him walk across the yard. >> Okay. So, Jeremy did leave with you. then? >> Yeah. >> Is he a black male? >> Yes. >> Okay. Have you talked to him? >> No. >> You haven't talked to him? >> have I don't have his number, none of. that stuff. I mean, he literally lives. across the yard. But I told his brother.
yesterday. um cuz he I didn't see him, but I told. his brother yesterday that I. that she was gone. that we needed to at least have an idea. if if he had seen him because he doesn't. He doesn't work. I mean, and I figured. maybe if he was out in the yard doing. something he saw her something going You. know what I mean? Like just an idea of. what was going on, if anything. >> What was his response? >> His bro- His brother said, "I'll go in. and tell him, but I don't know where. he's at.". >> Emily mentions a man named Jeremy who. lives just across the street. She claims.
he spent the night at their house and. left her early that morning, just hours. prior to Phonecia's disappearance. Even. more concerning, Emily says she's since. tried to find Jeremy, but he seems to. have disappeared, too. At [music] this. point, investigators still don't know. whether Jeremy has anything to to with. either case, but the fact that he had. access to Phoenicia's home, was there. just hours before she vanished, and now. couldn't be located himself, is enough.
for them to start digging into exactly. who he is. And what they find is. alarming. Jeremy is a 33-year-old. recently released violent felon who had. spent roughly eight years behind bars. for attempted armed robbery and. hostage-taking. But as concerning as his. past is, none of it proves he's the man. who killed Hare. Investigators still. have too little evidence to begin. hunting him as their suspect. However, everything is about to change once.
Officer Hare's dashcam footage is. finally recovered. >> 97. 97. >> Hey. >> Hey, bud. >> Yeah, I flipped so you can hear me. >> Go ahead and go to the front of my car. real quick. I'll meet you up there real. quick. All right, I'll get.
>> As investigators review Hare's body cam. and dashcam footage, the image is far. from perfect. The suspect's face is. partially covered, and the footage alone. still isn't enough to tell them exactly. who they're looking at. But by now, South Carolina officers have already. sent over photographs and a physical. profile of Jeremy Smith. From what. investigators can tell, the man in the. footage appears to match. But any.
remaining doubt starts [music] to. disappear when they run the image. through facial recognition software, and. it points back to the exact same man, Jeremy Alexander Smith. As the first day of the investigation. slowly comes to an end, officers across. New Mexico are sent Jeremy's criminal. profile and begin searching for him. And. by now, investigators decide it's also. time to warn the public. So, Jeremy's. image is released publicly while.
officers canvass local businesses. warning employees to call police and not. approach him if he's spotted. Meanwhile, investigators in South Carolina uncover. another major lead. Records from the. BMW's built-in auto locate system show. that on the day Founisha disappeared, her car traveled from the area around. her home to a remote property near Jones. Drive, where it remained for only a few. minutes before moving again. That gives.
investigators a very specific place to. search. And when they arrive at the. isolated property and begin searching. around the abandoned house, they find. the one thing they were hoping not to. find. Just behind the building, they. discover Founisha's body laying face. down on the ground with her hands zip. tied. Her eyes are covered and with a. single gunshot wound to the back of the. head, strongly suggesting an. execution-style killing. And while.
officers are now beginning to grasp the. full extent of his violence, they have. no idea what he has planned next as he's. already making his way towards two more. targets on his hit list. As the next day of the investigation. begins, there are still no sightings of. Jeremy and the two phones found near the. highway are still under examination. So, all officers can do is continue. following leads and wait for the.
suspects to emerge. And exactly that. would soon happen because at. approximately 1:45 p.m., New Mexico. State Police dispatch receives a call. from a ranch north of Cuervo where. someone might have just come face to. face with the armed killer they are. hunting. >> Hello. >> Well, yes, is this Sydney Harrison? >> Yes, sir. >> Yes, this is Agent Teamer, New Mexico. State Police. Can you Can you just kind. of walk me through what happened and if. you have any times and what you saw, you.
know, just any kind of details? >> Um yeah. Well, yes, we were I was here. with my with my partner and he we were. he was driving the truck. We had gone. next door, ran out of bottled water, and. wanted to go check on the cabin next. door, my parents' cabin next door. So, and just make sure everything was still. locked tight, whatever. And. and so, got. got all that, we started to head back, and he said, "What was that?" and saw. something. And so, we drove a little.
further to try to see what it was. We. were thinking maybe coyotes, but. >> Yeah, we could see what it was. And then. I heard pop, pop, pop. All I saw was a. big giant hole in my arm. And I just wanted to get you in the. truck as fast as possible and get here. and call the cops. >> Right. I switched over to the driver's. seat. Ran out ran I picked him up, got him. back in the truck, came back [music] to. the house, called 911 on the way to the. house. >> The pair's description of the man, along. with his unpredictable and violent. behavior, instantly alarms the officers.
They believe the unknown shooter could. be Jeremy. So, they head there prepared. to confront an armed mass killer. >> State police. If you're in here, make yourself known. >> Okay, you look left. >> Okay, I'll go left, you go right. >> Yeah. >> STATE POLICE. IT'S CLEAR HERE.
YEAH, I PROBABLY SHOULDN'T GET SHOT. >> Once officers arrive at the farm, Jeremy. disappears again. The witnesses can only. tell them which direction he ran, leaving police with no clear idea where. he plans to go next. But, that changes. once specialists finish examining the. two phones recovered earlier. One of. them is linked to Jeremy, while the. second leads investigators to his. ex-girlfriend Cheyenne, and ultimately.
to Albuquerque, where Jeremy had. recently been staying. So, investigators. decide to question her, looking for. information on where he might go next. Instead, they're about to learn just how. many more people Jeremy may be planning. to kill. >> I'm a special agent with the FBI, and. I'm the one tasked with this particular. investigation. >> Um, a state trooper? >> Please tell sir. >> State police officer, um, went to go. assist the vehicle.
right up on what was four flat tires, that was out on I-40. Um, he pulled up and uh, subject came out. and uh, we're talking to him and then. ended up shooting the police officer, right? Drove away with the police. officer in the vehicle and then. eventually dragged the police officer. out. The police officer ended up dying. of his wounds. >> [music]. >> And the subject took the state police. vehicle until he wrecked it, then fled. on foot. So, that's why we're here today. Okay? So, we're just trying to develop we we. develop some information that it might.
be Jeremy Smith, right? And so, we want. to get any information that we can about. him, right? >> So, is you know this person? >> Yes. [music]. >> And who is that? >> Jeremy Smith. >> Okay. Do you recognize that jacket he's. wearing? >> Yeah. >> How do you recognize it? >> He always wears that jacket. >> Okay. When was the last time you saw him? >> 29th of Thursday. >> [music]. >> Me and my mom dropped him off at the. airport. >> Uh-huh. >> Cuz I had to go back to South Carolina.
>> [music]. >> He has a bad temper. >> Mhm. >> And I was getting tired of that, you. And I didn't I was just trying to help. him like to stop like like think like. you don't need to get so angry. >> Mhm. >> And he doesn't listen. [music]. And so, he got upset with me. and he was raising his voice and he was. saying that he's not his old self. >> Okay. >> So, he was going like that, like putting. up his fist to show me that this is how. I could be and he scared me and that.
really hurt me mentally cuz I've already. been through abuse with men. >> So, I wanted to go home and. get him out of my life. So, then we went. and. actually a cop got involved because. >> [music]. >> we went towards my house by the gas. station and some his mom. answered. And he went so that he I said, "Do I. need [music] to Do I need to involve a. cop?". >> Okay. >> And so, he didn't like that. So, he goes. inside the gas station. I don't know. what he tells the cop, but he tells him.
something and I see the cop's face just. go. like that. And then he comes back out and he's. getting loud again. And I go, "I just. want my car keys. >> [music]. >> and I just want to go.". And then the lady told me that I might. have to get a restraining order. And he was a bad friend. He's [music] a. very caring person. My mom was going to. buy him a ticket, but his uncle bought. him the ticket. [music] So, then my mom. was trying to hurry up and just get him. out of the house cuz he doesn't know. nobody here but me.
>> Okay. >> [music]. >> Um. so, like I said, I really told my mom to drop [music] him. off. And he kept calling me and at first I. was like, "Just leave me alone." [music]. But then with the soft heart, I was just. like, "Look, we will never be together, but I will be friends with you, but I. don't ever want to see you. But if you. need someone to talk to, >> [music]. >> I will be here.". And he just kept saying, "I'm going to. come back to you." [music]. That was scary.
>> Okay. >> It's As soon as he As I tell my mom, "He. just hit me." My mom was like, "Let's. call the police." That's just how my mom. is. >> [music]. >> So, my mom's very like. "We got to know. Let's go. Let's go." My. mom was She's. >> [music]. >> She yelled at him one time because the. way he was talking to me. And now that she found out that he shot. somebody, [music] she thinks that he's. going to shoot her. So, she's like, "I don't want to be. home. And he knows where we live. And. then you brought him here." And so, she's mad at me. So,
>> So, um other than his family in South. Carolina and you here and your family, [music]. >> Yes, ma'am. >> you don't know of anybody else that he. knows, anybody that you could reach out. to? If you ever talked to about anybody. that he kept in contact with from. prison? Anything like that? >> No. >> Taken together, what investigators learn. during the interview suddenly gives them. a much clearer idea of where Jeremy. might be headed next. They now know he. has a strong personal connection to. Albuquerque, very few people he could. turn to there, and a possible reason to.
seek revenge on Cheyenne and her mother. So, officers increase surveillance. around her home and the surrounding. neighborhood, and this decision would. pay off because in reality, Jeremy is. already on his way to the very. neighborhood. As the search continues into the next. morning, officers still have no sign of. Jeremy, but they already know. Albuquerque, and specifically Cheyenne's. neighborhood, is one of the places he. may eventually surface. And they're not. wrong, because Jeremy is getting closer.
While police monitor Cheyenne's. neighborhood, Jeremy arrives in. Albuquerque and heads into a gas station. [music]. where upon buying cigarettes the clerk. asks him for his ID and unfortunately. for Jeremy the clerk knows exactly who. he is and calls 911. Upon receiving the. call police rush towards the area and. within minutes deputies [music]. locate him near Llano Vista, the exact. neighborhood officers had already been.
watching around Cheyenne's home. At this. point officers know they need to contain. him as quickly as possible. He's armed, already linked to two killings, moving. through the middle of a residential. neighborhood, and prepared to kill. anybody who stands between him and his. twisted plan. >> So far as I know we have a large. perimeter with visual containment of the. entire area. >> Hey bro, come here. I got to be I I got to be a man. Come up.
here. Come up here. Roxanne, he's running he's. running. Kill him, bro. He's running west bound. He's running. west bound. He's running west bound. He's running west bound. West bound. He's running towards the hill on Los. Altos. West bound Los Altos. Back into that. community.
