Enten & Chalian unpack new CNN polls with midterms 13 days away
Brand new CNN poll out this morning shows President Trump with a leard record low. approval rating. The New York Times has a poll showing largely the similar thing. All the polls. basically share the same types of numbers, but underneath those numbers, there is one group of. voters that may be swinging in a way that could be decisive. With us now, CNN chief data analyst. Harriet. You know, I may have misspoken there. I called them voters, right? It may be that that's.
the exact opposite here. These are people who did vote in 2024. This is exactly right, John E. It's the voters who did not cast a ballot in 2024. And that group could ultimately prove to. be the decisive factor in a number of key races. And you could see it right here. Their views on. President Trump. Oh my goodness gracious. It is a different world from where we were back in 2024. Voters who didn't cast the ballot in 2024, Trump's not approval ready. just after that election. Look. at this. Isn't that approval rating was plus4 points for his plans for office? Look at where.
we are right now. Oh my god. Negative62 points. Johnny B. That is a very very unlucky 66 point. decline going in the wrong direction. Voters who did not cast a ballot in 2024, they're like so so. now they are decisively against the president of the United. It has to be a key target for. Democrats. They have to get these people to the polls. If they can, it will clearly pad.
their margins. What are these voters saying about some of the key issues? Yeah. I mean, what what. is driving this? What is driving this absolutely massive decline for Donald Trump? Well, how about. just inflation? Look at this. Wow. Wow. Wow. Is the name of the game. I like to put numbers on the. screen that I can get to in just two hands. 10%. 10%. That is the percentage of voters who did not. cast a ballot in 2024 who approve of the job that Donald John Trump is doing on the key issue of the.
day. 10%. And look at this. When you're in Michael Irvin's number for a percentage, you know it is. either really good or really bad. In this case, it is really bad. 88% of voters who did not cast the. ballot in 2024 disapprove of the job that Donald John Trump is doing on the key issue of the day, inflation. 10 very bad turns of approval. I mean, that is the moonlanding line. You know, the percentage of Americans who think we faked the moonlander. You don't want to be there. And. then 88% disapprove. Atrocious. I will say you and I both keep calling the voters. They may not be.
That is going to be the key for Democrats is to make them voters because again, these margins will. clearly help them. So, in the race for Congress, how are these people? Yes, I'm not going to call. them voters. How are these people feeling? How are these people? How are these people feeling? Well, we're going to look at those who are actually likely to turn out and vote. That I think is. the key measure, right? And you can see it here. Take a look here. Okay. Voters who didn't cast. a ballot in 2024. The choice for House margin. Look at this. Plus 25 points. What about in the.
key Senate races, right? In those red states. Those red states getting those voters off the. sideline. Look at this. A 21 point lead for Democrats in those very tight races. It could. prove to be quite decisive indeed. those voters getting them off the sidelines and into the ballot. booth. You talked about Michael Irv play for the Dallas Cowboys I believe in Taran County. I think. the stadiums in Arlington Taran County I believe. Yes. But that's neither here nor there. The point. is what are the prediction markets saying about Texas right now? Yeah, you got to go outside of. Dallas to see it. All right. Chance to win the Texas Senate race. James Telerico according to.
the cash prediction market 64% chance. Kemp Paxton just a 36% chance. This 64% chance could become. 100% election night if the polls are right about those voters who didn't cast the ballot in 2024. getting off the sidelines and voting for this gentleman on the screen right now. And that's. one of the groups of voters James Herico is trying to reach when he's out there campaigning. Harry, thank you very much. We do have a lot of news this morning. We'll be right back. Brand new CNN poll numbers just out with less than two weeks before the midterm elections and.
they are very bad news for President Trump and his fellow Republicans. The president's job approval. rating now stands at only 32%. That's a record low for him. And while the president is not on. any ballot, anti-Trump sentiment certainly is. Congressional Democrats are hitting the final. stretch with a 10-point advantage over Republicans nationwide. That's based on the voters's choice in. their own district. Republicans are facing broad dissatisfaction with the US economy and the state.
of the country as they try to hold on to Congress. I want to bring us in the political director of. the Washington Bureau Chief David Challion right now. David, thanks for joining us. President. Trump is really hanging over these midterms. Uh isn't he right now? Without a doubt. I mean, you noted that low mark of his approval rating across his two terms, but just look at how his. approval rating has come down over the course of this term. Since February of 2025, Wolfe, he has.
been on a steady decline uh from 47% approval at the start of this term, now down to that record. low of 32%. And it's happening among his fellow Republicans, too. He's at a low point in approval. among his fellow Republicans. And you know, Wolf, this is not where a president wants to be in a. midterm period, just a couple weeks before the election. You could stack Trump up to his modern. era predecessors before midterms, and he is at the low mark of all of those as well. How is the.
president uh President Trump viewed on the issues specifically? Well, in every issue we tested, Wolf, he is below majority approval. His best issue is at 41% approval on voting and elections. You see immigration there at 38%. Those are pretty anemic numbers uh to begin with and those are his. strongest issues. But look at the bottom of that list, Wolf, on the most important issue to voters, the economy, inflation, cost of living. That is where Donald Trump is performing the worst. Is the.
economy a decisive issue for many voters? Without a doubt, it is overwhelmingly the most important. issue. Nothing else comes close. voters tell us in our poll, but also for Donald Trump Wolf, this. is the big change maker from his first midterm election in 2018. Look at that first column. His approval rating on the economy now stands at 27%. Eight years ago, when he was heading into the.
midterm elections, by the way, his party lost 41 seats in that election. He was at majority. approval on the economy, 53%. And if you look the assessment of the economy in the country among. Americans in our poll now is far worse than it was at that point eight years ago. I mean overwhelming. majority now say uh 20 uh or 69% overwhelming majority said then that economic conditions were. good. Now it is only 26% of Americans in our poll say economic conditions are good. Wolf,
how do Americans, according to all these latest polls, view the war with Iran and its impact on. the US? It's a good question, Wol. This war was unpopular when it started, and its unpopularity. has hardened, especially felt the pinch from the war at the gas pump. 67% say that Trump's decision. to on Iran military action has hurt. Only 18% say helped. 14% not made a difference. Twothirds. of Americans say his decision to go to war with Iran has hurt. All right, David Chelian with all.
the latest numbers. Very important information. Thank you very much. Let's look at the other side. of this. As John and David were just talking about this CNN polling showing that yes, Democrats have. a 10 point advantage on the generic congressional ballot who voters are saying nationwide they want. to see control of Congress. But this is not a glowing endorsement of Democrats on the. question of if the would the country be better off with which party? Democrats have the edge.
over Republicans. But as you see there, that 22% says that it wouldn't make any difference. What. do you think that the message is to Democrats if they would win from how voters are clearly feeling. right now? I think voters are feeling exasperated and it's actually kind of similar to how what we. saw during the 2024 election. Now, a lot of people voted President Trump in off into office because. they felt like they were ready for change. They felt like he was going to bring that message. But.
there were also a significant amount of voters, if you remember, in that election who were already. fed up with both parties. And so I think the message if Democrats do well here is that they're. going to need to show voters that they're willing to make those substantial changes. And we've. heard a little bit of talk about this. I think that's why you're also seeing some of these more. progressive Democrats uh do better than expected in some of these races so far because voters are. just fed up overall with the status quo. Yeah. And you can see that the White House will be looking.
for advantage in that as well if it goes the way the polling seems to suggest at this moment.
