Trump's approval sees a historic drop: Analysts react to new polls
We have a new look now at just how much the Iran war and how people feel about it and the. economy are impacting how they also feel about President Trump right now. Joining us now running. the numbers is Harry Anton. So this is comes from a new polling data from Pew. Yeah. What are you. seeing? Uh I mean laughably bad. Uh no president I've ever seen is in a worse position before. midterm election than President Trump. I I mean just look at this. Just look at this. 38 points. underwater. 30 point 38 points under water. You go all the way back. You go back to Harry S. Truman.
FDR at this point before a midterm ever ever. Ever at this point before a midterm election. You're talking about your September October polling. The worst I've ever seen is Donald John. Trump. 38 points underwater. I mean it's it's as I said the worst I've ever seen. It's laughable. I mean it these numbers are worse than the Ferris Wheeler television show was. Okay. that that show. is terrible. Stuns me stuns me into silence all the time. Um, back to the polling. Yeah. Put it.
into context. What else? How does this fit with what everything else you're saying? Right. So, you see this negative 38 points underwater. I mean, he's further. I mean, he's way under. the Hudson River at this point. But it's not the only one, right? I mean, just take a look. Trump's not approval rating worse than negative 30 points. You have Ipsos, the Reuters Ipsos poll, 33 points under water. Now, there was another one last month. He was 34 points underwater. CNN poll. 34 points underwater. The AP North poll 38 points underwater. the Pew Pole 38 points underwater. No. other president before a midterm election was even at minus 31. And now we're seeing 1 2 3 4.
I guess five if you count that other Ipsos poll as well. And so we're just seeing across the map. and all the polling data that we are looking at. We are looking at history in the making. here for the unpopularity of President Trump for a president before a midterm election. And if you're. a Republican who is running for re-election this term or Republican who wants to join Congress, this is the headwinds that you have to face. It's historic headwinds in which you essentially going, "Oh my god, how am I supposed to win with numbers from a president this bad?" Uh our wonderful.
viewers will likely know the answer to what is driving this because it has been the same things. driving the numbers for a long time, the economy. But when it comes to the Pew Pole, take us inside. What is driving why it is so bad? You know, if you've been watching, we have been drilling in. this message day after day, week after week, month after month, because it's staring us right in the. face. And we want to make sure that you understand what's going on here. And look at this. I mean,
independence, the name of the game, the reason why the last election was so close, but one that. President Trump won over Kla Harris was, take a look at independence. According to the Pew poll, the Pew Validated Research, look at that. It was tied. It was tied. Look at independence. Now look. how they feel about President Trump. 57 points underwater. 57 points underwater. You just never. see numbers. I I I I struggle to come up with the adjectives because you run out of them because. what we are seeing here is history and then you're trying to understand how this is going to impact.
Republicans in the midterm. And at this point, the only say I was going to say not good. Well, and which is why people question the president's messaging here when he is the one saying vote like. I'm on the ballot. vote. If you want to vote, let me let me tell you, Democrats, please, pretty pretty please, with a cherry on top, they are saying yes, vote as if President Trump is on. the ballot because if he is on the ballot, you can pretty much guarantee that Democrats will take.
back the United States House. And you you can also pretty much say this is why the Democratic odds in. the United States Senate have been going up and up and up. And that is because this president, as unpopular as he is, is dragging Republicans underwater. And it is history literally in the. making. We'll see if history become or history in the making comes on election day for Democrats. as well. They're certainly hoping. But hey, there's still a few weeks until the election. There is still time though. People are already They are. They are. You know what? I remember. when there was no early voting and now there is. It's unbelievable. Things change in your.
life so much. When you're all of 14 years old, as Harryon is. Uh my my beard feels like I'm 55. You make me feel like I'm a thousand. Sarah, let's discuss with Malik Abdul, a Republican strategist, and Chuck Rocha, a Democratic strategist, also the president of Solidarity Strategies. Thank you both for being with us. Malik, first to you. Amid these low poll numbers, despite the applause in the room, uh a number of Republican candidates are trying to shy away. from the situation caused by the war with Iran, including uh Mike Rogers in Michigan, that Senate.
race that could determine control of the chamber. Are these attempts to distance themselves by these. Republican candidates like Rogers enough? Whether or not it's enough, we won't know until November, but I think it's definitely smart politics. This is what happens typically in midterm cycles where. candidates begin to pull away from presidents. I remember Allison London and Grimes, pulling away. from Barack Obama refusing to campaign with him when she was running against Mitch McConnell. So,
this is good. And because the national if if the elections are about the national conversation, which is about the gas prices, meaning things that these candidates can't control outside of. their respective states, we're going to have a really bad night. So, I think it's important for. them to actually localize the elections to talk about whether that's tariffs, you know, some of. the prices that they're paying, things that they can do things about. But, you know, Donald Trump. should give them room. Um, he didn't for Salazar, but he definitely should give the candidates some.
room to pull back from him. because he's not as popular everywhere. The the argument, Chuck, from Republicans is that Trump is going to drive out the base and and instead of giving them room, he's telling supporters act as though I am on the ballot. Does that worry you at all in some. of these close races for Democrats? I'm working in most of these races, so I don't come on TV. and pontificate about what I think. I know what's going to happen because I'm working in them. And. what happens is the same thing that happened to Democrats two years ago. And it's very elementary. Even a Mexican redneck from Texas could figure out. When we were in charge of the White House,
people were aggravated. Even though Joe Biden said in inflation is at all time high and we're. creating all these jobs, the American people was like, I don't feel that. And Democrats. got punished and they elected Donald Trump for a second term. It's the exact same thing that this. same electorate is feeling right now. Even if they voted for Donald Trump or not, and I'll say to all. my Democratic friends, they're running back to us, but not because they love us. They are just that. pissed. And most of the times we say these voting groups are not monolithic. Black people ain't. monolithic. Latinos ain't monolithic. But for the first time in my career, they're all monolithic.
right now. And get this, they are monolithically pissed at what gas is costing, bread is costing, and they're looking for somebody to blame. And for us, our advantage is we're not in power. So they. easily can blame the Republicans. So that's why you see a distancing. Now, will it work? Will it not work? The one thing for sure is what you said. They've got to get their base voters. out who voted for Trump in a presidential year. That's the one thing that he's always done that. we could never do is he got new people to vote. So, so if he's trying to get the base voters out, why go to New York tonight where despite arguably underperforming in the last cycle, Kathy Hokll is.
still expected to win the governorship there. Trump uh appearing in Syracuse, New York uh. for Bruce Blakeman, the Republican candidate for governor. I'm going to get the name wrong. Anadaga. County, whatever the is. So if you look outside of that area in the rural parts of that area. um of that county, Donald Trump actually did well. So even though Kla Harris won Syracuse, you know, that main area, if you look kind of in the north area, Donald Trump had some room to run with.
So I think that and in addition to being a New Yorker himself, he feels as if is that as he said, you know, vote as if I'm on the ballot. So I think it's because of his popularity in those. areas outside because in a governor's race that's actually going to matter. not just Syracuse, it's the areas outside of Syracuse. I want to go back to the Michigan Senate race because Chuck, you talked about the anger being uh spread across demographics. Earlier this week, there was some. reporting uh that black community leaders and Jewish community leaders were concerned that Abdul.
Elsed was not doing enough to reach out into their communities. We saw during the Democratic primary. that uh black support largely was with Haley Stevens, his opponent. Um do you share those. concerns? Look, primaries happen and the primaries in Michigan happen late. So, you still have an. after effect of a lot of African-Americans and Jewish Americans who supported Haley Stevens. So, there's time to make that up. Interestingly, I talked about this yesterday on TV is there's a.
reason why Barack Obama is going to Michigan and he is going there to try to fix this problem that. I still don't think is a giant problem. And I do think Michigan may underperform some of the other. states because of the issues that you raised. But in a year when there's a wave of D plus 6, that means you win Michigan D plus three. So there was reporting earlier uh from Annie Grey. and others at CNN about Democrats facing this conundrum with polls trending in their direction. and uh a fundraising disadvantage of whether to play it safe and go allin on the seats that.
appear that they can win or to go all out and try to win in districts that Trump won by double. digits in the last cycle. Are you a gambling man, Chuck? What are you going to go with? You know, I'm a gambling man because I like to go fishing for, you know, we talk about fishing a lot. It's. the same thing. Listen to me, Democrats. I said this on a streaming thing that I tried. to put out to all Democrats on Monday. Open up your target list. Go as broad as you can. When. the electorate is this mad, you could fall into voters who have never heard from either party.
because we microtarget oursel down to talking to nobody. While Republicans, and I give them credit, sometimes will go shotgun out and talk to all the people because they ain't got nothing to. lose. That benefits them. We have to get out of our tight constraints of who we talk to. and do a lot of races or we're going to have folks win where the Democrats didn't spend a. dollar and that's not good. Malik, are you sort of selfishly encouraging Chuck to go all out and and. hoping that it their aspirations plan short? If you go back to 2016, Trump and this whole. idea of a 50-state strategy, that's what he's done since 2016. So, he's brought in, he said,
I'll whether it's California, whether it's Syracuse, you know, the areas around Syracuse, he's willing to go in all of these places. And I think that's something that's an advantage. Now, whether or not that helps the candidates, um, is a different story because Donald Trump in places. is more popular than the candidates. But I still think that Republicans have a very good chance of. keeping the Senate. Not so sure about the House. But even in the case of South Carolina, when he. was a kid, Boris, go long, go long. Go low. We're going to keep the South Carolina screen passes. Go.
low. Throwing at Hail Mary is Chuck Roachcha. Chuck Malik, appreciate the conversation.
