Trump's approval craters w/immigrants & Latinos: Enten & experts unpack
Immigrant voters casting ballots as naturalized citizens helped Donald Trump win the White House. in 2024, but the latest polls show he has lost much most of their support. It might cost the. Republicans in the midterms as well. CNN's Harry Anon is running the numbers on this one. So, we've talked often about the big gains that the president made in 24. Yeah. What's changed? Yeah. What what has changed, Ken? You know, this was one of the big surprises coming out of 2024, right? that is that Donald Trump made major gains among naturalized citizens. That is immigrant.
voters despite what a lot of Democrats thought were harsh rhetoric from him. But all of those. gains, they are basically collapsing. It turns out that actions do in fact have consequences. Take a look here. Trump's net approval rating among immigrant voters, you know, in late 2024, look at this. His net approval rating was doing okay, minus two points. Not too bad, not too great either, but pretty gosh darn good for a Republican president. Look at this now. Minus 46 points falling through the floor. My goodness gracious. That's a shift of 44 points.
away from the president of the United States amongst a group that he did historically well. with for a Republican presidential candidate. But all of those gains at least for President Trump. seem for not immigrant voters are waiting. Adios amigos. Goodbye to the president of the United. States there. And there could be a lot that drives that. How much is the president's immigration. policy are you seeing motivating that? Yeah, you know, look, there are a lot of reasons for this. drop. You know, the economy, cost of living is one of them. But when I say actions have consequences.
I'm also talking about immigration because one of the key things that immigrant voters did was they. like President Trump or them former President Trump on immigration. You know, back in 2024, he was more trusted on immigration policy by four points over Kla Harris. But look now, look in 2026. Now 60% of immigrant voters say that Trump has gone too far on deportations. I. think immigrant voters just like other Americans were they thought they were signing up for one.
thing and what they got was something very very different and they did not want what they see as. the harshness of the Trump deportation policies and I think that is playing a major role in them. shifting away from the president of the United States and him falling back to levels that he. might have been used to seeing during term number one instead of what he saw on the re-election. pathway for him at least back in 2024. So you add this all up and what could it then mean for. the midterms? Yeah. Okay. So this it would be one thing Kate if we were just talking about President.
Trump, right? You know, look, President Trump, as much as he wishes, is not on the ballot in a. month. Who is on the ballot is Republicans running for Congress. And you can see it here. I mean, just take a look here. Voters who are immigrants, you know, back in 2024, Donald Trump put up a. historically strong performance among immigrant voters. He only lost them by four to Kla Harris. But look at this Democratic advantage. Absolutely expanding. Now, Democrats ahead by 22 points on. the generic congressional ballot. That is a shift of 18 points away from the Republican party. And. that, of course, is what? That's five times more than five times the lead. This is going to be a.
big part of the story because they make up about 10% of voters. That is a significant chunk. And if. Republicans can't hold on to them, it's just yet another group that they haven't been able to hold. on to that Donald Trump made big gains with back in 2024. Yeah, good to see you, Harry. Thank you. so much. Important to remember this. President Trump is losing the support of Latino voters, according to a new NBC News poll. Just 27% of Latino voters now approve of President Trump's. job. This comes just two years after President Trump made major gains with the key group of.
voters, seen as Kristen Holmes asked President Trump about the shift yesterday. Your approval. ratings with Latino voters has dropped down to 27%. What's your message to them? Pope, you're fake news. to your CNN, your fake news. My poll numbers are great and all you have to do is. look at the crowds we're drawing and every time I leave that candidate will be losing and by the. time I leave they're winning. No, CNN poll numbers are fake and your whole outfit is fake and so are.
you. All right, here now to discuss how this could impact potentially the midterm elections in a. month. Joining us, Mike Madrid. He's the co-host of the Latino Vote Podcast and the author of the. book The Latino Century: How America's Largest Minority Is Transforming Democracy. Also with us, CNN senior political commentator, Anna Navaro. Thanks to both of you for being here. Mike, let me start with you. Latino voters aren't just souring on President Trump. Latino voters now give.
Democrats a 24-point advantage over Republicans on a gen ballot of who should control Congress. That's up 12 points from September of 2024. How significant is this shift? Well, it's extraordinary. The size and scope of it is a little bit breathtaking. Maybe. not surprising because of the actions that the administration's been taking for two years. But. to answer the question directly, this will be very consequential and not only who controls the house, but the senate. And if this sticks, this really redraws the entire map to 270 electoral votes. So,
we are witnessing very uh very uh measurable, consequential uh results from Donald Trump's. failures, attacks, and terrorizing the community. But most of all, just a fiasco of a job on the. economy that's workingass people. Anna, as you know, Republican Congresswoman Maria Salazar from. Miami Dade County criticized President Trump's immigration crackdown in this viral campaign ad.
Listen. Careful what your adviserss are telling you about immigration policy. The same Hispanics. who help you get to the White House in 2024 feel betrayed today. That NBC News poll finds. 67% of registered Latino voters now say the Trump administration has gone too far on immigration. enforcement. 22% say it has taken the right approach and nine% 9% say it has not done far not.
gone far enough. Is the administration taking the congresswoman's warning seriously? Anna, what do. you think? I don't think so because I don't think uh I don't think anything has changed since that. ad came out. Listen, that is my district wolf. I live in Coral Gables. That's District Florida 27. And Mariel Va Salasar has been a staunch supporter of Donald Trump. She uh voted in favor of the big. beautiful bill which awarded billions of dollars for ICE enforcement. So, you better believe.
that if a CubanAmerican from Miami, a Republican congresswoman is making an ad speaking directly to. Donald Trump and telling him he has gone too far on immigration is because she is seeing the poll. numbers and she is desperate and knows she is in big big trouble. And what she said is absolutely. true. No group voted more for Donald Trump than the Cubanameans and the Nicarawan Americans and. the Venezuelan Americans in South Florida. And every day I hear from people who supported Trump.
in that commu in those communities, he has gone too far. Add to that the foreign policy disaster. when it comes to Venezuela. Those people feel betrayed. They were dancing in the streets and. celebrating January 3rd when Maduro was uh taken out of Venezuela. But now they see that 10 months. have gone by and that Donald Trump every day empowers and legitimizes Maduro's vice president.
who he has left in office. Add to that the forever war. Add to that the cruelty in immigration. I. mean Alligator Alcatra was in our backyard. We are seeing the cruelty on a daily basis. So I'm what. I'm surprised about is that he still has 27% support. It's amazing. Uh, Mike, Republicans. redrrew, as you know, several House districts in Texas and Florida for that matter, assuming they. would hold on to Trump's historic gains with the Latino voters. Could that strategy now backfire?
Yeah, I spent a good part of the last month in South Texas to kind of go see for myself. what's happening in San Antonio, Corpus Christi, down in little small cities like Beville, Texas. We're witnessing this extraordinary reversion, this incredible push back on towns that were 70%. Hispanic and they were voting for Donald Trump 70% uh for for Republicans. These are these uh. we're witnessing 24 point swings back. It's just it's hard to fathom as somebody who does.
this professionally who pulls Latinos to see that kind of a reversion this quickly. You can feel. it on the ground. It's very palpable. People are angry. They're not just disillusioned. They're not. depressed. You're seeing uh nationwide in Hispanic dense precincts five times the amount of turnout. in early voting this stage 30 days out 27 days out of an election. Latinos are notoriously a day of. voter. We vote on election day. But to see five times the turnout happening already is something.
that nobody has seen in 30 years of watching this stuff because it's never happened before. So yes, South Texas is a place people should absolutely watch. This gerrymander is turning into a jerry. massacre for the Republicans. They've cut themselves off at the head at the pass here. and I think at least three of those five seats they carved out for themselves are likely to go. to the Democrats. These are supposed to be safe Republican seats, Wolf. So, um, you could see. just a huge amount of seats, 17, 18 seats that are Hispanic, have sizable Hispanic populations.
in all the contested battleground seats, every one of them going towards the Democrats this.
