Trump just hit an all-time low on inflation: Enten & NewsNight unpack
President Trump just set a new record. But what record and will he be happy about it? With us now, CNN chief data analyst Harry Eden. So what record and will he be happy about it? He will not be. happy about it at all. I feel like Donald Trump is the modern incarnation of Britney Spears because. oops, he did it again. Just take a look at this. A new record low on inflation. The worst. net approval rating on inflation or the cost of living in AP Nort's poll yesterday. Look at this. 65 points underwater, way under there, under the Titanic. Jacqu Kustoau could never get to.
these levels. It's a record low for Trump or any president ever. He's done it again, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever. And indeed, Johnny B, look at this. You think this minus 65 low, just just look at this. President's net approval rating on inflation. The 20 worst polls ever on. inflation of the cost of living. They are all Donald John Trump since April. He's not only the. first president to ever be 60 points underwater on inflation of the cost of living. He's the.
first president ever to be 50 points or lower on the cost of living. He is lower than Joe Biden, Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan, any president you can think of, all of them. He is the lowest ever. And. not only is the lowest ever, John, he holds the 20 worst polls ever. No one is even closer. If. you were to rank them, it' be like Trump, Trump, Trump, Trump, Trump, Trump, Trump. It would it. would literally be you would do a Trump, then you would just go woo. And then you'd have to go woo.
woo woo woo woo. All right. Until you hit a Biden. That is a lot of woo. How about with independence? How about with independence? This is the name of the game. Just look at this. Okay. Trump's net. rating on the cost of living among independents. In the AP North poll, you know, back in 2024, they. asked a retrospective question. Get back Trump in your first term. Help or hurt your cost of living? Among independents, hurt slightly outran help by two points. But look at this now. Look at his. net approval rating on the cost of living among independents. It's -74 points. Minus 74 points.
That is a drop way down there. We're talking about a drop of 72 points in the wrong direction among. independents. They are what is driving it. But the truth is Donald Trump is underwater when you. look at these polls among Democrats, independents, and Republicans as well. Cost the cost of living. When we're talking about the cost of living, gas prices are such a big part of that. What are the. prediction markets now saying about that? Yeah. Okay. So, you know, I I was watching earlier on.
Steven Moore, the economist was on saying, you know, the you know, gas prices really hurting. President Trump. And obviously it's even more ain't a Democrat. And you can just look at this. Take a look at here. Chance that the gas prices on election day are above $4 a gallon. Look at this. A month ago, according to the cash prediction market, it was a 32% chance. Look at it now. It's. well more than doubled. We're talking about a 79% chance. This is what's going to be on voters minds. when they are casting ballots. We've seen this in poll after poll after poll. The cost of living, inflation, the number one issue. Gas prices ain't helping. And this is the types of numbers if in.
fact gas prices are above $4 a gallon that pretty much guarantee a house majority for Democrats and. may very well lead to a Senate majority as well with Democrats winning in a lot of states that. Trump won by double digits back in 2012. All right, Harry, thank you very much. This AP poll. has some really stark numbers uh in terms of his net approval on a whole host of issues. Cost of. living being by far the worst, a negative 65% net approval. the economy negative 45%. But even go.
down the list, immigration negative 21%. Border security negative3%. Voters are saying pretty. loud and clear they don't think he's handling anything well right now. Well, first of all, with regards to his campaigning, he's got what uh Ohio, [clears throat] Texas, Georgia, New York, Alaska, Montana, Kansas, Arizona, Nevada just in the next 10 days, plus of course Michigan. and Pennsylvania. Nobody better than rallying the base, getting them excited about an election.
uh to turn out. And as we all know, midterms are about distinctions between, of course, your opponents, but also getting your base jinned up and excited and then pulling some. some of those independents as well, which brings me to the numbers uh that that you just read. Um, it is very obvious that you cannot fix four years of record setting failure with two years. of record setting success. Donald Trump is going on the road and telling people we've got another.
couple years that we need control of the House and the Senate in order to make good on a few more. of the promises because he's already delivered on reducing crime to the lowest numbers in 150 years, the steepest decline in prescription drug costs. He's closed the southern border with net negative. migration. The largest tax cut in American history. 70% of the people in this country didn't. even know there was a tax cut in the big beautiful no tax on tips. No tax on overtime and no tax on. social security. What about the number one thing that's voters care about the cost of living but.
gasoline is always the Democrat's response. Last I checked which gasoline affects all of that as. we know. And last I checked it was Democrats who want higher prices for gasoline because they want. this country to run on unicorn hair and guns. And that's Let me just ask you to finish your thought. Explain how Trump has performed on the number one issue that matters to Americans which is the cost. of living things that they need to spend money on getting to work gas feeding their their families.
groceries and housing themselves rent and housing costs. inflation, gasoline, all of those numbers. are lower than they were under the Joe Biden administration. No, they're not. They are. Uh. the average right diesel was 511, 47. I've got the numbers in front of me just to help us out with. this conversation. Today, gas prices are $441. Uh before, right at Trump's inaugural, they were.
$311. Right. And they were diesel prices today Joe Biden and was over 9%. Diesel prices today are. $6.39. Trump's came into office they were $3.72. The consumer price index is 3.4% right now under. Trump. Uh in December 2024 under Biden it was 2.9%. So okay, we've got the numbers. We know. what they are. The American people also don't care about the numbers. They care about what's going.
on in their lives. And the president just keeps telling them, "I'm doing great, guys." And to make. matters worse, they had a chance to do something and the House and Senate left. And people are. watching. I I think you should never underestimate the voters. They're watching this really tough. situation for them go unanswered consistently. And then there's a doubling down on tariff wars, a. doubling down on the situation in Iran. You know, you'd think the president would say, "I am devoted. to getting us out of there immediately. Here's my plan." Instead, a lot of the time he says, "Oh,
we're going to be there for a while." So, think about this. And I'm coming from a party, I want to. admit, I'm coming from a party that historically could often be off message and incompetent about. dealing with the leadup to elections. I don't understand the malpractice of the Republican. party right now, having had a chance to pass some meaningful legislation, do something dramatic. about affordability before it was too late, leave an imprint, make a closing argument, they. literally went home with no major accomplishment. Like what? Like like a tax cut. Brother,
I'm saying to you, I'm asking like what would you have passed? You had a chance. For example, you. voted against it. Get out of the war. Get out of the war would have been a good one. So surrender. So surrender to the people that we've beaten. Go on. Excuse me. So listen, wait. Can I just. say you always argue about 8020 issues. We got 8020 right now on this economy. 80% of the people. think that this is going in the wrong direction. You don't even have 20. You have 17. So, you and. 17 of your little friends need to figure out how to get a little bit more on your side because the.
American people are saying, "Wake up." And as your friend, I'm gonna tell you, we did this two years. ago. We kept telling people, "Believe me, believe me." And they're like, "I can't." Because when I. open my wallet, there is nothing inside. So, if you're the party of the working class, if. you're the party of the working class is saying, "Help me." You are in the you control the House, the Senate, and the White House. And people are struggling. So, what is your pitch to make them. feel better? And the war is hurting the average American. They don't care. They're not. Listen, we we don't want to see anything bad happen in the Middle East. But that's not what the American.
people are thinking about. You know it, Scott. They are saying this war is coming home to their. kitchen table to their inability to pay the bills and they don't see the president doing anything. about it. So you're you're arguing that the Congress should have passed legislation. I'm just. curious because it I think it would be insightful if you could tell us what bills Democrats would. pass. How about the Congress saying stop this war now? The War Powers Act. They had the ability to. say stop this war. I know Democrats desperately want to have Iran surrender to Iran who we've on. the brink they're on the brink of collapse. That's what you're arguing for saying stop hurting our.
own people that also the straight is open. The oil is flowing and you want to surrender to us. You want to surrender to why are we preparing to tap the strategic petroleum reserve again if the. oil is flowing? I I think at the end don't do that. You know, at the end of the day, Scott, you know where the prior at the end of the day, I think we have to acknowledge that the president. of the United States set expectations for this conflict. It was supposed to be over very quickly. that seemed like maybe this will be just like Venezuela. It turns out to be something else.
In that Time magazine interview today, which is an extraordinary thing, not to read, but to. experience, cuz I don't really know that you can call that reading. Um, [clears throat] you have. the president of the United States referring to it as a war, not a war, demonstrating the kind of. incoherent messaging around so many of the various initiatives that they've selected, not even policy. choices, even this new press to make him the centerpiece of the midterm races. It it seems like. Ken Paxton can admit in private and pretty much everyone else in public understands this except.
the president of the United States. At the moment, he is radioactive. He is radioactive. Everyone. blames him for the current state of the economy. And whatever we want to say about the numbers, the perception on the part of most of the American people is that things aren't nearly as good as. they ought to be as he is responsible. Just as a tactical matter though, he has been at the center. of American politics for 10 years. To argue that you could somehow disappear Donald Trump, the president of the United States with a month to go is crazy. I'm not I'm not arguing that. The.
only thing you can The only thing you can do, the only thing you can do in a political campaign is. make your argument and draw the line. Hence my question to the Democrats. What bill would you. pass? What taxes would you cut? What would you do? And that's what Republicans are going to have to. do. I'm not disputing you on the poll numbers. The question is, if you voted for Democrats, do you. anticipate that they would be able to after years of advocating against say domestic energy supply,
do you anticipate them being able to bring down the cost of gas or anything else? That's crazy. So, there's an argument to be made in spite of the poll numbers and the president is going to. have to be part of making it, hence the schedule. Two points. I actually agree. I I I don't disagree. with you in terms of turning out your base. There is a bet that Donald Trump is placing right now. that the voters who do not normally turn out when he is not on the ballot that if he shows up they. will turn out for him. I mean he ran a PSA saying as much. Please vote like I am on the ballot using. our tax dollars. Um, so that is actually like a strategic play because I do believe they think.
when they look at the coalition of voters that they're going to need, they're not going to be. able to get those Obama Trump voters or um Obama like Clinton Trump or like he's not going to be. able to get those folks because the the middle is more likely to ready to vote for um Democrats. than for Republicans. So strategically him coming out is for that 17% particularly in a very tight. race. He thinks that will could help you win. I will also agree Democrats have to do more.
than just run against Donald Trump. That's true. We need a proactive vision and I think that we. are seeing that in some candidates. Now you all will then say they're the crazy DSA candidates, but the American people are saying [laughter] no no no they are talking about affordable. uh uh housing. They're talking about healthcare and access to all corruption. [laughter] But. that's even their people in their party. I mean yeah they are talking about war in Gaza. They're. talking about um the war in Iran. Yes, they are talking about but they're also talking about.
the things that those poll numbers say. And so the reason why there is just a new part of the. party bubbling up is because they are putting a proactive vision that Americans are looking. for. Just like the Tea Party put a proactive thing that Ashley said, I think is is definitely.
