for joining us, Ed. >> This guy is a 16-year NFL vet and he. never missed a single game. As a. four-time Super Bowl champ and the only. linebacker to start four Super Bowls. Here he is. Romo Bill Romanowski. >> He's in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. He's in the Bronco Ring of Fame. He's an. all decade play safety in the '9s. A. hard-hitting defensive back out of the. University of Arkansas. Here he is, Muddy Waters. Steve Atwater.

>> He's one of the greatest undrafted free. agents in NFL history. He's the first. undrafted player to surpass 10,000. career receiving yards. He hold all the. Broncos receiving records. Broke my. records and touchdowns. And he's a. division 2 and a football hall of famer. Here he foots Rod Smith. >> This 13-year NFL vet played in 197. games. He led the Broncos special teams. and tackles seven times. He served at. the Broncos special teams captain Burns. Keith Burns.

He's a one-time AllPro. He's more famous. for making the one play that can define. the Broncos. He had the biggest. defensive play in Broncos history. He. broke up the pass in Super Bowl 32. Brett Favre intended for Mark Chamur. Here he is. Mo John Mol. >> He's a Pro Football Hall of Famer. He's. an NFL MVP. He led the league in rushing. with 2,000 yards, 20 touchdown. He's the. only player in NFL history to accomplish. that stat. He also is a Super Bowl MVP, a member of the all decade teams of the. 90s, the Broncos all-time leading.

Um, obviously, you know, I'm on television a. lot and people talk about, man, we hear. you talk about the Super Bowl and the. backto-back years and what it was like. with the Broncos. And I thought it would. be a great idea to get a lot of the guys. that made those backto-back Super Bowls. possible, but it was just more than the. backtoback because it was a com it was.

something that led up to those. backtobacks. A lot of disappointment, but we had a lot of fun. And I want to. thank all of you guys for taking time. out of your busy schedule today to sit. down and have a conversation. [laughter]. >> Put that down. What? You got some gunpowder in there. >> Well, thank you guys. The question that. everybody always ask, uh, man, Club Shay. Shay, man, how did Club Shay start?

>> You stole it. You stole it. [laughter]. You stole the. >> Okay, you you you. >> we actually I'm going to use this. footage for the lawsuit. [laughter] Me. and Burns going to have a lawsuit. Burn. Burns, tell them how it started. >> Well, actually, he used to always take. naps during training camp. So, you know, me and Rod, we was just up and we just. giddy just, you know, trying to make the. team and all that stuff. So, we was. like, well, we like to do activities at. night. So we used to always have the. rookies come up and bring beer, food up.

to the room and we always stayed on the. 12th floor. >> No, we go eighth floor. >> Eighth. We got moved to the eighth. Okay. So it's the eighth floor and we. decided that. >> we was going to get everybody up, gamble, playing cards. We was going I. don't care if it's dominoes. I don't. care if it's shooting dice. Whatever it. was. And we just decided to come up to a. with a name and we was like, well [ __ ]. let's call it Club Shay Shay. >> And from there it kind of just like took.

off. You know, >> it started with it started with the boom. boom knock. Then he came. strong. >> It was our facilities and he strong. cuz you know how they was talking. Oh. yeah. You know we had Disney he was in. there playing the thing and all the. horns and the dude came in there. Oh, we. like because they did stuff all around. cuz like after practice, after the. morning practice, I wanted to take a. nap, but they didn't take a nap. So, I. was like, man, hey, I catch y'all. tonight. And then at night, okay, we got.

beer, you know, guys, hey, smoke a. little cigarettes. That was it. Real. real cigarettes. And but we'd have a. good time rolling dice, guys playing uh. uh. >> Madden. Yeah. Guys playing dominoes, guys playing cards. And we was like, man, we just And it was just such a a. fun time. And we didn't go to bed. We. didn't go to bed literally every night. till 1, two in the morning. And then the. last night we always see, well, who can. stay up the latest, right? So we didn't. go to bed probably that last night of. training camp till probably about four, five o'clock in the morning. But that. was how club Shay Shay all started. It.

was fun. It was bonding. And I tell. people all the time, >> you just don't win games on the football. field. >> You have to be close. And everybody, even if you just came by and stuck your. head in the door, even if you didn't. come in and gamble, um, but it was fun. And that's how Club Shay Shay came to. be. It's 30 years in the making. It. wasn't my room. It was Ro. And and. >> I'm glad you admitted that [laughter]. on tape. >> But no, it was it was it was it was so.

it was so much about, you know, culture. We were creating a culture and me us. being young guys and we could get to. hang out with him. Then Steve would stop. by. Steve didn't stay. He Steve, you. know, Steve professional. He st he. [laughter] he stopped by every now and. then. He was about to No, TD wouldn't. come down but once or twice. Ed would. kick his head in. >> Yeah, I'm out. >> And and sometimes, HEY, WHY YOU ON OUR. FLOOR? Were you on? >> Yeah. I waited in line on that red. carpet many, many years ago. [laughter].

>> Nobody really wanted to be on the eighth. floor. >> No one wanted noisy. Yeah, >> I won't sleep. So, I'm too loud. Hey, look man, you need to go to another. floor. The door will go down, but ain't. nobody ain't nobody. >> I was too busy trying to sneak lease. into the dorm room. [laughter]. >> That is the perfect distraction. >> Thank you. >> Yes. Four kids in four straight training. camps. [laughter]. >> See, Lisa, I a Lisa, he brought it up. >> Yeah. >> But what the training camp because going.

away and and Romo, you could attest to. this. I don't know if y'all went away in. San Francisco. I think. >> we did. Y'all did. Okay. So Warner, you. spent all your time here and you was in. San Francisco. So the rest of us rest of. us been here going away for training. camp and I thought that was always. beneficial because it gave you an. opportunity to get away from everything. and you could just focus on football. What did what did training camp what. were you trying to get accomplished Romo. in training camp? What was your focus to. going into training camp and then coming. back knowing that you had a se a 16 game.

season in front of you? >> You know number one it was getting ready. for the season. >> You had to recover. I remember up on I. was up on the top floor. I brought a hot. tub [laughter] in. I had a full-blown. hot tub, you know, and then you guys. know I had full-blown therapists coming. in every night. [laughter]. >> I need you the pharmacist [laughter].

before the game. You will not take out. So I knew when anybody had an issue. When anybody had an issue, they were. coming up. >> cuz but you were walking around the. locker before before the game. He got a. bag. Jack, you know, Shannon, how you. feel? What you know? Yeah. [laughter]. >> And Rod, how you feeling? So he came to. me one time and we're playing the. Raiders in the preseason game. And so. like I was like dragged. I was tired as. hell. Here comes Roman with that damn. duffel bag. I'm like, [laughter] "Man, what?" I said, "You got something to get. me up, man?" He's like, you know how he. talks. Hey TD, I got something. [laughter] for you. It's gonna get you.

really fired up right here. [laughter]. So, man, I take this thing out, man. I. am running. I am like bouncing off the. walls of the [laughter] game. I'm like I'm like I'm on some damn I'm. super high, man. By the time the game. start, I'm exhausted. [laughter]. I have like the worst game of my damn. life. I said, man, I ain't messing with. Romo's ass. [laughter]. But he I mean roll over little have. dudes they be asking cuz he has. something it's called a super suit.

Hold on. Wait a minute. Super Suit. What. the hell is a super suit but guys would. be lined up and I don't know what Romo. had in that tackle box cuz he had a. tackle box and he had like and. everything was he had. >> had a label. >> Oh yeah. Label on. And he HAD THESE. LITTLE I MEAN TALK I MEAN PROBABLY LIKE. a like a grain of rice. >> He's like man you're going to feel. great. [laughter]. be like [laughter] you. in on you for about.

my head. [laughter] I don't need that. anymore. I said, "No, I'm good." Cuz I. had made the mistake before and I think. Lilo back there somewhere. Uh uh those. pills they used to give us before the. game to get us hype, Lilo, you remember? And I said, "You know what? Lilo like me. and Lilo came in together and uh Lilo, hey, hey, Shark, take these, man. I'm. telling you, bro. You going to be good, >> boy. I took that thing, man. And I'm. already amped. I'm already animated, boy.

>> I couldn't go I couldn't even go out. there for the offense cuz I was I'm. about to I was hyperventilating. >> I said, "Never get it." I said, "You. know what? Mo Mo Mo Mo Mo Mo Mo Mo. uh that year. cuz the 96 that was your rookie year. coming out of Kutztown State high draft. pick uh number 15 pick in the first. round obviously you know it's a. different environment and I tell people. all the time coming from college no. matter where you went to college the NFL. is a different game these are grown men. they got wives they got kids they got.

private school tuition and they are not. trying to give trying to give up their. job I don't give a damn what round you. was drafted I don't know how what awards. you won was your thought process coming. into training. Well, first of all, I was just trying to. make it. I was [laughter] trying to. survive. My first introduction to the. league, they they flew me in right after. the draft. So, I go in through the the. wait room. You know how you got to come. through the the sliding door. The first. two people I see in there is Atwater and. Harold Hasselback. [laughter].

with no shirts on. [laughter]. your intro. Harass back about 6'5 about 285 and he. probably no no no lie he probably had. 67% body fat. >> if Yeah. I mean he he he was a a a. specimen. >> Yeah. So I the first thoughts I had was. I might need to get back on that plane. [laughter]. >> If he's backing me up, we in trouble. they playing behind me, we in trouble.

But no, I I was I was uh you know, I was. definitely all struck coming in from a. division 2 school. >> But uh you know, at the same time, I was. I was hungry and I wanted it. So, >> it was a a chance for me to prove myself. to to a lot of people, myself included, you know, coming from that level and and. trying to maintain. So, >> a lot of it was me not knowing any. better, >> right? >> But a lot of it was also me having that. hunger and uh want to be successful. Rod, you get here uh as an undrafted. free agent in 94. You and Burns was in.

the same class. I think Burns, you a. seventh rounder, right? >> Yes, I got. >> seventh rounder. And you guys come in. So now I'm I'm already Atwater was a. year older than me. So at got here in '. 89, I got here in 90. And then um you. guys come in and I'm I'm established. Atwater is obviously established because. he comes in his first year. They go to. the Super Bowl. He makes the Pro Bowl. He's an all pro in the second year. He. makes it the Pro Bowl, uh, an allp pro. And so from that point on, I think from. 90 all the way through, you went to the.

Pro Bowl every single year that. >> Yeah. And so now you guys come in as an. undrafted free agent. Uh, Burns is is a. seven seventh round draft pick, but. Burns locker is on the back side of. mine. >> Is on the back side of your locker cuz. you sit you sit across from me and then. when Ed come, Ed sits next to you. Yep. >> House is here and uh. >> Shai. >> Shai [laughter]. over over here. So. >> So when you get in in 94 tell what.

what's your thought process of obviously. you know you I mean the NFL this is an. opportunity but I'm not a high round. draft pick so this is not given. Oh. >> I'm trying to make it man. Um, honestly, and and Burns and I, we used to talk, you know, we had this, you know, the. hotel room. All we had was each other. There a bunch of low round or high draft. pick for him. And, uh, non. was undrafted. >> Um, man, Butler Bonote, >> u Randy Fuller was fourth round. Tom. Nen,

>> Alan Ald, Alan Ald. So, we had a we had. a crew, man. And. >> the thing was we always said, "We going. to figure out a way to make it. Mhm. >> We're going to figure out a way to make. it. We're going to figure out a way to. make it. And me, small school, you know, and that's all you kept hearing about. what school you went to. And I couldn't. even describe. I'd say the name, they're. like, "Where's that?" I said, "It's in. Missouri." I said, "Zouri Southern.". They're like, "Where's that?" So, but. the thing was is I think the main thing. for me was my lock was in front of. yours, right by yours. >> And I'm thinking this guy was what you.

11 round draft. >> Seventh round draft pick. >> Seven round. >> They barely had seven rounds. Used a. seven round draft pick. But for me, if I. can just mimic him. >> Mhm. >> you know, what is he doing every day? He. would clean his locker, I clean my. locker. >> He stayed and did something, I stay and. do it. And just because anywhere cuz I. wasn't getting any reps. I wouldn't even. get any reps. Um, and it was just reps. >> Barely. I was barely getting them. >> That's how you got the name B Rocket. [laughter]. Rocket. >> Hey, I had I had every nick because the. thing was you just wanted to please.

them. For me, it was just like take the. vets and please the vets, right? So I'm. on scout team and so whoever the top. receiver was on the other team if it was. Jay Rice Rice get [laughter] rice no it. was Jay Red Beans and Rice I was red. beans and rice I was red beans and rice. I was bottom rock I had like so many. nicknames but here's the thing that guy. got the ball on that team I was slim. brown remember I was I beat I would get. whoever jersey was the number one. receiver on that team. >> and I would take those reps. >> and so one day I'm back there talking to.

him. >> I'm killing in practice I said, "Dude, I. am lighting him up right now." He done. stopped the practice and told the. defense, "Ain't supposed to be no. tackling. They start hitting my ass. every [laughter] other every TIME I CAME. UP." NO, HE TOLD ME HE HE KILLING Y'ALL. Y'ALL SUCK. Y'ALL SOME [ __ ] [laughter]. BLAH BLAH BLAH. I'M LIKE, "BRO, I AIN'T. SAY THAT. I didn't say that. >> Every play." [laughter]. >> Every play after that, I got hit. But. you know what? For me, I was loving it. I was loving every minute cuz that was.

my game day. I wasn't getting to play on. Sundays. I said, "Man, I'm going to get. these boys this work." And I what I did. what it did for me, >> it I earned their respect. >> cuz I kept getting up. They knock me. down. I get up and laugh at them and go. right back. Right. >> And so, you know, then once I got kind. of his endorsement, it was like, "Okay, whatever he tell me to do, I'mma do it.". And I never questioned it, you know, and. I just watched him, paid attention. He. said, "Other than your faith, then it's football, then your family.". You remember telling me that? He said,

"My family can't call me when I'm over. here." He said, "Cuz whatever they got. over there, this going to fix it.". >> And so I adopted that that day. And I. told my folks, "Don't call me while I'm. at work.". >> Yeah. >> No matter what. I don't care what's. going on cuz whatever happened over. there, I can't fix it until I get home. >> And I learned that from him. So I just. start mimicking him and I literally just. adopted every little thing he did. So, >> Bird, you came in uh [laughter]. >> and when you first got here, we weren't. close like we became. Obviously, one of. my best friends, him and Bucket, but.

just watching and I I'm watching him and. you know, he he crack little jokes. >> Um I didn't know he was as funny as as. as he became, but I'm just watching him. and everything. And then and I'm I'm. watching him and he he's played hard cuz. he was a Playboy all all-American. Yes. your sen your uh your uh your senior at. OK State. And so I'm ju I'm just. watching him and you know him and Rod. and the the the group that came in in 94. they just kicking it you know they kick. I was like okay see what little fell got. going on and then I remember because in.

95 when I fractured my eye socket. >> man I done called [clears throat]. everybody ain't nobody pick up the phone. and nobody answer the damn phone. I. can't drive cuz I can't you know they. got my eyes so completely shut and I was. like man who nobody got. >> I called Burns. I said hey bro I need a. favor. He said what you need? I said, '. Man, I need you to go by Wendy's. Give. me a bacon give me give me a bacon. cheeseburg double cheeseburger, ketchup. only, fries and a and and a soda. He. said, uh, I'mma [clears throat] need a.

minute cuz I got my daughter cuz you had. just had Rachel. >> No, Daniel. >> Danielle Daniel, you just had Danielle. You said, I'll be there. And from that. moment on, >> y. >> we we've been this been my main guy. We've been locked in. But what was your. thought process coming in in 94 as a low. round draft pick trying to make the. club? >> Um just wanted it. Um I finally got the. opportunity and I was like wow you know. here I am. I'm thinking you know you all. world in college you know you get. drafted you automatically make the team.

not knowing that they do cut. [laughter]. So I was like well they going I'm going. to make it hard on them cuz whatever I. do I'mma do it to my best ability. And. like I said, we started out was no. acclamation period. We started out first. day of training camp. We in full pads. We going live. >> That was hell week. Remember we had the. the uh. >> hey [clears throat] the first eight. practices both both days in pad. >> And I said I would never forget it. because I said they going to remember. who I am cuz one thing I could do was.

hit. Yeah. >> So I said well and we get to hit. I said. I'm I'mma one up them cuz I'm hitting. everything that's moving. So it didn't. really matter to me. But when we got in. that opportunity to play and we did goal. line, five plays of goal line and I. remember it might have been Snowden was. a running back. Yeah. And he tried to. jump over the top. I ended up catching. him right before the goal line and. hitting and it kind of caught some of. the coach's eyes, >> you know. And then once we got in the. preseason, I was like, shoot, I was more.

>> simple. >> No, it was it was snow. I think it was. Jeff Snow. played. I think he played at. I think he played at Colorado State. I. think. >> Don't call it. Don't call it that. We. just. >> I got here in 90. >> He was He was a year late. He was. [laughter] 95. >> He might have been He might have been. cut 95. >> Oh, he was in camp. >> Yeah, he was in that horse miles. >> I know his name, but I ain't going to. say his name. >> We give Everybody had a nickname. If you.

burn a [laughter] like. from Eagle Foot. [laughter] So he gave. everybody a nickname and this dude, he. went to USC and for whatever reason that. [laughter] joker could not remember them. play that tell the story cuz I was the. very. [laughter] Yeah. Yeah. We're in training. camp. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. And so the dude get So we get in. there, he bluff the plate, dude. Get. back in there. He run the wrong route. Damn. [laughter] He blocked the wrong. man. I SAID, "DAMN, OJ SIMPLE. CAN YOU.

SEE?" And from that point on, he never. went by his name. And every time every. we saw years and years later, man, what. up, Simple? We dropped the OJ, just. started calling Simple. [laughter]. >> Okay. Water. >> Uh, 90. I'm a wide receiver and so all. the tight ends get hurt. Or Clarence. doesn't get hurt enough that he can't. play. He just banged up, but they need a. backup. Orson Moley gets hurt. He can't.

play. Chris Verhos get hurt, he can't. play. So they move me to tight end. And. so in 90, uh, Greek taps me on the. shoulder say, "Dan wants to see me. I'm. panicking because I was like, damn, I. thought I was doing good. They going to. cut me." So we probably like eight, nine. games into the season. So Dan says, "We're going to move you to tight end. Would you be upset?" I said, "Yeah, I. probably going to throw me the ball." He. said, "Yeah, I just learned the plays.". Now mind you, I'm struggling to learn. wide receiver plays. Now you could put. me in a new position. I have no idea. So. they put me I get in. [laughter].

I start motion like, >> "Hey, what I got again?". >> Sure, that was [laughter] short. That. wasn't that year. That was the next. year. >> No, no, that was not that. No, [laughter] I already been tight end. Don't be acting like. >> I go to the side. I go to the sideline. Water come up and put his arm around me. He said, "Why you lead the huddle?" You. know, you didn't know that. [laughter]. >> I thought, you know, I thought he going. to booze. I THOUGHT HE GOING TO BOOZE. HEY, MAN. [laughter] It's going to be.

okay. It's going to be okay. You take. your time, you know. Hey, you can do it, man. That man put his arm around me and. say, "Hey, >> why you left the hood?" You know, you. didn't know what I was thinking. >> Yeah. And you GO IN MOTION. TIME OUT. TIME OUT. [laughter]. >> What I got? Hey, bro. You knew before. you left the hunter, you didn't know to. play, MAN. WHY? WHY YOU HAD I had to. fool him? Because, you know, in in uh. back then with Dan, rest Dan. So, is. that when we got to uh the pregame, Dan. would ask you what you have. He would. ask certain players, "Okay, this player. right here, what do you got?".

>> He went around the room and asked. certain players what they had. >> I'm telling this for the very first. time. He's going to ask me everything, but he'd already told me what I had. >> So, I'm going to ask [laughter]. you. the first time. This the first time. anybody's ever. [laughter]. >> damn. Because he wanted me to play so. bad. Yeah, >> he wanted me to play so bad and he knew. that he could how could he put me in the. game if I he asked me a question and I.

didn't know the answer. >> So he wanted me to play so bad that he. would tell me what I had said. I'm going. to ask you this and this is what you. got. I like Yeah. So he call on. [laughter] me. >> Yeah. Yeah. [laughter]. >> Hey, let's go back to clubh the club sh. the gambling. >> because like I said mo come by a couple. of times but Moy ain't really spend no. time. It was a a a group of guys that we. going to be in there. R me foots uh uh.

>> tick your burns uh plate. >> plate came in there name shade tree. shade. Oh yeah, James in there. >> Yeah, he going to be in there. >> But we we I mean it it was gambling. It. was fun. And I I still don't understand. cuz this man right here would This man. got the wor Burns got the worst luck. [laughter] ever. This I This man has. never won a single game of dice. Everybody else won. Fuss won. I've won. Everybody has won. This man ain't never. win. Hey Sean, let me get something.

Hold up. Bro, you going to lose your and. my money. [laughter]. I'm like, "This man ain't never won. >> And he the only man that's ever borrowed. money. Ain't never paid one [laughter]. back. >> He ain't never paid a dime back. You. old. >> He taught me how to gamble though. You. got to think. My rookie year we flying. to we flying I know. Second year we. flying to Tokyo. >> I don't know nothing about blackjack. None of that. So I'm learning all of. this." He was the banker. >> I'm like, "Well, [ __ ] He walking around.

with all this goddamn money." I'm like, "Shit, he can loan me a little bit. keep. my little stash. So, I used to watch. him. He fold out little little uh let. down the little T tray table. He put a. little blanket there and I used to see. everybody just gathering around his. little seat. I'm like, "What the hell is. they doing over there?" So, he was the. dealer. He literally was the bank and. everybody would come up there and they. would place their bets and I see him. just raking in all this damn money and. he always carried a satchel, a bag with. him and I said, "All is in this bag.".

And there's a. backup tight end, Ethan Horton. >> Yeah, he was running running back in. college. >> He's running back at North Carolina. They moved him to tight end. >> and we're chippy the whole second half. I'm playing outside linebacker. He's. tight end. And there's one play where I.

get pushed in the back. >> and I go down. >> and I pop up just run back to the. huddle. >> You know, I'm just excited to be. playing. And next day in the film room, that play showed up. >> Uh-oh. >> And Ronnie Lot, who stood by, he sat by. the door, flicked on the light switch. He said, "George, George Sea was our. coordinator." He said, "George, turn off. the projector.". >> He walked over to me, stood over to me.

like with that intense look he has. He. says, "Romo, if I ever see anybody push. you in the back and you don't do. something about it, I'll kick your ass.". And then he went on to say, he said, "Men, this is a game of respect. If you. let somebody punk you, they'll punk you. right out of this league. cuz everybody is watching every single. play. >> That's how it works. [snorts].

>> Wow. >> And that was my introduction. So from. that point on. >> you ain't [laughter]. GOT. let Romo go by itself. >> [laughter]. >> Yeah. >> What was your What was your moment? >> Oh man, I would say uh man, my rookie. year uh I think we were playing the Rams. in the preseason and um one of my. friends, he ended up being with a good. friend of mine lived in Atlanta, the. same neighborhood, Gaston Green. Okay. >> You know, Gaston Mohammed, right? Gaston. Muhammed. Yeah. Um well, we were playing. against them and like this was my first. time really getting significant play in. the preseason as an NFL player, you.

know, and um. >> you know, >> we we've been practicing and I I the. hole opened up and man, I filled it and. you know, I got a got a nice nice uh. nice tackle on him and you know, that's. when I was like, man, dude, I could do. this, right? >> I can do this. And there no, you know, he's not that big, but Gasson was. shifty, you know, fast, you know, yeah, he he was nice, real good running back. So, um, I felt like that was the moment. where I felt like, yeah, I I can do. this.

>> And of all the people in this room, you. think about it, you started with the. Giants. On that team was LT, you go to. the 49ers, >> you got Jerry, >> you got Steve, >> uh, you come to the Broncos and you play. with John and you play with myself and. TD and Ed. So, and I don't know if. anybody's played Romo. Romo played with. He had Jerry and and and Joe and Steve. >> Yeah. >> And he come here. He plays with us and. with John. Uh he was in Philly. You was. with I think Rand was Randle still there. when you was in Philly.

>> Nope. >> Oh, he's gone. Okay. But you But uh. Reggie. >> No, Reggie had left. Reggie had Reggie. had Reggie had left. Reggie had left. So, what was your welcome to the NFL? Cuz I remember I was like, >> "Who this wide receiver with a damn NECK. ROLL ON? [laughter]. AND IF HE if he a Hback [laughter]. I mean he th out there with a back roll. I was like but damn. >> So what what was your welcome to the. >> Oh well I started out with the Giants. and I held out which was frowned upon as. a rookie, right? And showed up like day.

eight and it was at Fairley Dickinson. University and you know I signed my. contract and back then they're like okay. get to the field. So they had already. had their morning practice getting ready. for the afternoon. So I walk through the. auxiliary gym at Fairley Dickinson. You. know, they have makeshift lockers up. there and I'm just kind of walking. through. I don't know anybody. I haven't. met anybody on the team. The team just. won the Super Bowl the year before. They. were the oldest team in the league. Bunch of Hall of Famers, future Hall of. Famers on that team. So, I walk through, I get to my locker. They have, you know, the medical tape with the Sharpie and. your name written on it, right? And my.

name's of course spelled incorrectly. [laughter] And I'm thinking, this is not. really the red carpet moment. I sit down. and we're getting ready for the second. practice. So, I sit down and I recognize. the dude sitting next to me. I got Carl. Banks and LT and my lockers. Why I'm in. the linebacker section, I don't know, but I'm sitting right there and LT was. notoriously messy. His locker was a. disaster. They found all kinds of stuff. up in there [laughter] and checks and. other things. Um, and so he's looking. around for his cleat and he can't find. it. And now I've not even met these guys.

yet. I've not shaken a hand, haven't. been introduced. And so LT talks across. me to Carl and says, "Hey man, you seen. my cleat?" And I'm not saying a word. I. haven't even met these guys yet. And. Carl's like, "No, dude. I think this guy. took it." And he stands up right next. [laughter] to me and LT stands up and. I'm, you know, fresh fresh out of. Stanford trying to tie my cleats and. LT's reputation already preceded him. Everybody knows. And I'm thinking, I'm. going to get my ass kicked on the first. day of practice. [laughter]. >> But then he uh, you know, he slaps me. I'm just messing with you, man. And.

slaps me on the back. And I'm like, all. right, [laughter]. that's how it's going to be. And I. thought it was just all fun in games. I. kid you not, we go out to practice and. he heads slaps one of the young tight. ends and breaks his nose on like the. third or fourth play of the padded part. of camp. And I'm like, "This guy might. for real be crazy." [laughter]. >> And uh and but he I'll tell you what, he. couldn't have been a better teammate. He. had a great sense of humor and he was. really good to me. But that first day, you know, you're thinking future Hall of. Fame royalty, all that you know that's. happened in his life on and off the. field is standing up next to me on day.

one. It was intimidating. >> Right. Mo, what was your uh welcome to. the NFL moment? Uh, I probably have to. say the the first preseason game uh at. Candlestick part, the old Candlestick. Yeah. >> Uh, even though I had a good training. camp and, you know, I was kind of, you. know, feeling like I was okay. You never. really know how it's going to go in the. game situation. So, that first game, the. preseason game, uh, like Romo said, it. was uh, >> I had to play the whole second half. >> and, you know, I I kind of showed out. you know, I had 20 20 tackles, uh,

couple pass breakups, and that's the. first time I got fined, uh, with the. Gino Terreta hit. [laughter]. But, uh, yeah, it was, uh, I think At. Yeah, Atwater came up to me before the. game and gave me some words of. encouragement. He said, "Hey, Ja, >> be that beast." And that became our. theme before every game. He'd come up to. me and say, "JA, be that beast." And. that was that was all I needed to just. turn up. So, uh, yeah, that game right. there was was pretty much I I knew I. could do it after that game.

>> Burns. >> Well, for me coming to Mile High, I was. like, "Okay, I never even heard of. Denver." So, I'm like, "Okay." But they. talked about the altitude, >> right? >> And, you know, preseason, you just. trying to make it. You got to do. whatever you got to do to try to make. the team. So, here I am getting my first. defensive snaps. And I forget that I got. to go straight to special teams. I go. from defense to special teams, from. defense to special teams. Offense got. their little reps. I can't catch my. breath. I'm sitting on the sidelines and.

Simon Fletcher looked at me and was. like, "Young fella, you all right?" I. said, "Nope." So, I'm like, "And I ain't. know nothing about no oxygen mask. I. ain't know how to put the joint on or. nothing. I'm over there literally. thinking I'm about to die cuz I can't. catch my breath." But he said, he came. over, patted me on the back. He said, "Hey, just get used to it cuz in order. for you to make this team, you going to. have to be able to play defense, but you. damn sure going to have to play in the. kicking game." So, I took it from there. After I caught my breath at the end of. the game, I was good. But that was my.

welcome to the NFL moment, >> thinking that I was literally going to. die. >> going from offense to special I mean. defense to special teams. >> in Mile High Stadium as thin as that air. was. So, that was my welcome to the NFL. moment. I thought I was literally going. to die on the field cuz it was I. couldn't catch my breath for nothing. >> Drew, was yours that uh. >> That's some strong stuff by the way. [laughter]. Somebody got my heart my heart pounding. >> Your heart was was pounding because when. you got to camp, uh Burger was the uh.

was the uh number one running back. I. don't know who was behind Burger. >> So we had the Rod Bernstein, we had. Derek Clark, it was Ordale M. was. Sheldon Canley, it was uh Glenn Milberg, >> Aaron Craraver. So I was seventh on the. depth chart, by the way. I was so deep. on the depth chart, man. It was. >> It was stupid. So So my coming and this. is the obvious story, man. The Tokyo the. Tokyo preseason game, right? >> So here I am in training camp. I'm. getting no burn. I'm eight, seventh on.

the depth chart on just the running back. depth chart. I'm on no special teams. whatsoever. >> We play the 49ers in Denver. I don't. play at all in that game. So, I'm six. round draft pick. I'm not getting any. reps. I kind of see the the writing on. the wall. We play the Niners again in. Tokyo the next week. Y'all remember. that? >> As soon as we get there, we go straight. to practice. >> It is hotter than the dickens out there. It's humid. It's hot. We're down. We uh. uh Aaron Craraver got remember he got.

issue. He didn't he didn't come. Cats. are catching cramps. So, everybody's. like falling out. We're practicing. against the 49ers, man. And we're down. to three running backs. I am getting my. ass whooped in like individual drills. I'm blowing every assignment. I don't. know the plays. Bob T is on my ass the. whole damn time. And this is like three. days this happens. So at the end of the. week, I'm freaking exhausted. I know. they going to cut me. I'm a six round. draft pick. I get no burn. I'm I'm. terrible at practice. So I go back to. the hotel. I'm like, you know what? I'm. getting the hell out of here, man. So I. try to call down to the front desk. My.

Japanese wasn't great. So because. [laughter] the. your English ain't great. I'm like, "That wasn't up off up the bar. right there." So, I can't get I can't. get a flight out of there, man. You. know, this is before you. Now, you get a. phone, you can get out of there. So, I. I'm I'm trying to get out of there. I. can't get out. So, I'm like, "You know. what? Screw this, man. I'm going to go. to this this game on Saturday." And. after this, I'm done. I'm quitting. I'm. going back to Georgia. I'm going to work. for Coca-Cola or something. I'm out of. here. Go to the game and I don't even. like put tape on. I just kind of dress.

up. I don't got no tape on my ankle. I. don't I'm not dressed like you would. normally dress to play. >> So, first quarter come, I don't play. Second quarter come, I don't play. Okay, go to halftime. I don't play. I mean, I, you know, I know I'm not playing coming. out. Go to the third quarter. About halfway through the third quarter, I look over at the bench and, you know, the starters, you guys are out of your. pad. Everybody's in like playing clothes. or no no pads on and it's like a group. of of veterans over there on the bench. and they're all huddled up and they're. they're doing something. I'm like, what. the hell are they doing over there? >> I walk over there and they eat everybody. eating hot dogs. They got these hot dogs.

wrapped up in aluminum foil. [laughter]. I'm like, well [ __ ] I'm hungry as a mom. right now. I don't go to Man before a. game. So I partake in the in the in the. dogs, man. Give me one of them dogs, man. Shoot. They give me hot dogs. I'm. like four or five in in the dogs. And I. hear Rich to 30. 30. And so when he says. 30, everybody's like 30 30. Where's 30? [ __ ] I look at my 30. [laughter]. I'm 30. Like come in. You You're on. kickoff. Now remind you, I am on no.

special teams. >> I go into the field. I'm throwing my. hands up like this. I'm walking out and. he just squ out there and Rod is out. there. He's number 19. >> So Rod grabs me. He's like, "Here's. where you stand on on kickoffs.". [laughter]. >> So I'm like, I get there. He puts me. right there. I'm next to to the kicker. I think Elum's kicking. >> Yeah. >> So him and BC are in there and I'm I'm. And then it dawns on me, man. Like all. of a sudden I am in an NFL game. >> I ain't playing an NFL game yet. This is. the first time I'm in one. And I'm. thinking, I got to go make this damn.

play. I got to go make this tackle. And. I see foot hit ball. Ball goes in the. air. I'm like, I'm hauling ass down. there. Now, mind you, I got a stomach. full of damn hot dogs. [laughter]. I run down there. It's the most. spectacular hit you you ever want to. see. [laughter]. Tyrone, >> oh man, I'm telling you, man. It's been. a clinic and and they show it in. special, you know, in uh preseason a. lot. But I go down there, I'll make this. amazing tackle, man. Blow booms. I mean, just blow him up. I jump up. I'm.

excited. Rod has hit me on the head. BC's hit me on the head. We're. celebrating. >> and I'll go to the sideline and I throw. up all them damn hot dogs [laughter]. right behind the damn [ __ ] But I would. say that's the first time that John had. said my name. Yeah. >> Cuz remember I'm not practicing with. Elway. >> I'm I'm I'm not getting any type of. like, you know, interaction with Elway. And for him to come over there and pat. me on the back and be like, "Hey man, great job, man." I was like, "Okay, that. was my. >> that was it.". >> Yep. Yep. next week you dabble you starting you.

>> I was on everything [laughter] on every. damn thing kickoff punt you know Pat. everything and I just got better and. better every week and uh you know I was. handling the workload they were giving. me and the first year first game of the. season against the Bills. >> they announced me the starter. >> y. >> and so that was that was cool man that. was good. >> man. >> but your first game your first catch. >> the first time you ever touched the. football. >> that was Washington. >> yep. >> you want to take it from Yeah. >> Yeah. No, it was um.

>> we're playing the Redskins though. Special teams was our thing. That's the. only way we going to get on the field. >> They command us now. >> Oh, [laughter]. the Redskins then. >> We don't get be cancelled. >> Hey, they cancel you for the truth. [laughter]. Plus, it's my club anyway. Remember. stole our club. [laughter] Anyway, the. Commanders, formerly the Redskins. No, we were playing and we was getting. killed. I think Brian Mitchell might. have broke the NFL record for kick. [laughter] It was it was.

And of. course, I'm the I'm the fourth receiver. >> because they only had four receivers, four receivers active in that game. >> Yeah. >> And James Washington was the safety.

I didn't know. what the route was, but I knew I was. going to get open [laughter] and I. thought they were going to throw to me, but I had a great seat. >> They called 24 double go, which we. supposed to be running go routes. But. >> and you got Daryl Green, so I they ain't. throwing it to go [laughter]. I got a future hall of fame on me,

right? So I'm like, I'm just going to. run the route, >> right? >> Cuz that's all I know how to do is just. run the route. So I run the route and. and I get in position. I get him kind of. inside of him and I looked up like, oh. damn, he throwing it to me. [laughter] I. see the ball in the air and it's just. like basketball. I just position myself. and I remember catching the ball and. when I fell like on my head, I saw that. paint. >> Yeah. >> That orange paint. And I saw Terrell. >> I was coming down. >> He ran me in full speed. >> He hit me like he hit Dus. [laughter].

>> I'm on the ground and I just see bodies. just coming cuz it's the end of the. game. This game winning touchdown. No. time on the clock. >> And I'm thinking I made it. I'm, you. know, this back before all the cell. phone stuff. My phone is just off the. charts. I ain't got no room for no. messages, no nothing. Right, man. Fella, man, you made it, bro. You made it. We. in there. I didn't catch another pass. for seven weeks. [laughter]. I had that one, but I really thought. that was going to be my moment to get.

just get the shine, but all these guys. came back. I went back to special team, went back to the bench, >> and just just cheered her and worked my. tail off in practice, man. And that's. how all my nicknames came. >> because I was just if we had 10 P plays. in practice, I took all 10. I didn't. care. I said they getting to play in the. game, they getting reps in the game. >> And me and Burns, that's our thing. Me, him, and and Carwell, we would all and. Byron, we would all have these. conversations like, man, whenever they. give us a chance, whenever they give us. a chance, we going to make our moment. So for me, that was that was my welcome.

to the NFL moment. But I just always. wanted a little bit more, but I I was. happy just to be a part of the group. That's what the thing was because Burns. was always the linebacker. So whoever. the best linebacker was, >> Junior say, [laughter]. [laughter]. >> you know, he could do whatever he want [laughter].

because he was so unpredictable. He's. supposed to be at the A gap and Harry is. he's in the flat. So for whatever. reason, do you remember that Monday. night? Because in ' 91, that was our. that was my first Monday. That was my. first Monday night game. Uh reg I No, that was that was 90. That was 90 when. you hit a coy on a Monday night. Yeah, Monday night. >> because we had our first game was in the. Coliseum and then we came back home. Monday night. >> and that what what do you remember about. that play? Oh man, I remember first off.

being in the meeting room and uh me and. Dennis, you know, kind of going over the. strategy like, bro, we got to hit Big. Christian, man. You know, what are we. going to do? And you know, Dennis at the. time, he couldn't hardly lift his arm. up, right? >> And so he was like, hey man, uh, we got. to, you know, we going to have to stay. up high on him. We don't want to go low. on him because, you know, he been. knocking people out with his knees and. people try to jump on his back, right? >> We got to hit him straight up. I'm like, [ __ ]. >> [laughter]. >> You sure? >> Sure.

>> But uh but you know, me being you know, looking up to Dennis and and you know, he was like my [clears throat] mentor, man. Uh you know, I was like, "All. right, hey, you say we got to do it.". >> And hey, man, the opportunity presented. itself and I just ran in there. Hey, he. he could have trucked me. I' I've been. trucked before, right? >> But hey, that that was that was my time. was my my time to to uh to get him, you. know, and uh I have t ton of respect for. Christian obviously, but um yeah, >> you did. [laughter]. >> I did, man.

>> Do you do do you think that changed the. trajectory of how you was looked at and. then how he was perceived after that. year? because you became, you know, you. were always a big hitter and and but you. became almost mythical because you talk. about a guy that that runs 44 that's 260. lbs and nobody like you said they had. also had Barry Word Barry Ward he was. tough too [laughter]. they would and all they did was running. power and ice on.

>> and so it changed the way people looked. at you and people never looked at him. the same. >> Yeah. And uh a lot of people don't know. that he had some other stuff going on in. his life at that time, you know. Well, shortly after that, uh you know, his. career ended and people say, "Oh, are. you in his career?" No, I ain't in his. career. He had some other personal stuff. going on. That's why he his career ended. early, right? >> Uh but we we just had we had good. battles, man. And you know, I didn't win. all of them. He didn't win all of them. Uh I it was that way with several. running backs in AFC West. Remember um.

my man from um from the uh from the. Chargers? >> Marian Butts. >> Marry and Butts. Boy. Woo. Remember Huna. knocked him out though? >> No, he did not. Marin Butts. [laughter]. >> Yeah, we remember that. >> That was Rosevelt Pots. >> You Oh, boy. Did he hit pots? >> That was pots. >> He had somebody else. Well, I think. Cincinnati. >> That was in Indie. >> That was Indie. Yeah. >> I've never seen anybody. I mean, you. look at Huna, he ain't 240. No, he weigh. 210. >> 210. 205. 210. But I saw him put lineman.

on their butt. >> He He was the f He was one of the few. DBs that I've ever seen. He never went. low on a def offensive. >> Never. >> He never. He put his helmet he put his. shoulder in the chest and he sat him. down. >> Oh yeah. I mean I I remember being on. the field man and you know running over. to make a tackle and I'm thinking I'm. going full speed and he COME RUNNING BY. BOW. I'M LIKE [laughter] OH. I'M like. bro I got to pick it up. Pon is coming. boy. He called the fumble on Ros. Roosevelt Pots. They ran because you. know they had they had them big tight. ends. They run power with Joe Caravello.

They had uh they had a uh. >> what was the other big tight end name? I. think it was Derek but they had some big. I'm talking about. >> everybody tight ends were 270 offensive. line the 300 and they run power cuz they. had as a matter of fact they had him and. Bernstein one of the running back. >> Oh yeah with the charger. Yeah. >> Yeah with the charger. and uh we were. down and Dennis hit pots and he coughed. the ball up and we go on to win that win. the ball game. >> Romo, you won Super Bowls in 889 with. the 49ers. What was it like?

[clears throat] Because you're talking. about and people talk about those 49er. teams. Those are some of the best teams. in history. Obviously, [clears throat]. Coach Walsh was there at the time. Uh Se. Coach Walsh uh you had what you got one. year with Walsh Walsh because he retired. and then George Sever takes over. So, what were the what was coach Walsh like. and what were those practices like? What. were those practices like? >> Well, um it's crazy to me cuz I thought. you get to the NFL, it's going to be. more physical. We're going to hit people.

every day in practice. and. we're in training camp first week and he. takes us out of pads and pulled us up. after practice and he said, "Men, there's a reason why I pulled you out of. pads cuz you're going to be fresher at. the end of the season when we're getting. ready for the playoffs.". And you know, he always had a nugget he. was going to a mental nugget he was.

going to throw you for what he was doing. with you. And we were never there. We. the first week we were in pads in the. morning, >> right? >> We were walk through in the afternoon. with Walsh, >> right? >> And then after that, hardly ever in pads. again. >> Wow. Everybody was jealous of how we. practiced. >> and then Mike brought that here here for.

us. We had we had on shoulder fans on on. Fridays 100%. >> I had and and people don't and and then. I tell people they talking about thud. up. No, they really really th on seven. was thud. >> Oh yeah. >> It was no. You know how they do now. You. run by they touch. No no no. There was. none of that. >> Yeah. No. You catch a pass if you want. to over the middle. >> Yeah. And like [clears throat]. as defensive backs and on defense, we we. needed to practice. We felt like we. needed to practice our tackling and, you. know, being physical so we wouldn't get. in the game and hurt our shoulders.

differences between what they did in San. Fran and what we did here in Denver? Well, one thing I learned because I I. got drafted, won Super Bowls back to back. I was. like, that was easy. You get drafted and. win Super Bowls every year. >> And then three NFC Championship game. losses later. >> Yeah. >> Realized how hard it was. Then I go to. Philly. No chance we're going to. anything there, right? And then the.

reason why I came back, why I came to. Denver is because of Mike, right? Cuz. Mike and I used to talk a lot in the. wait room in San Francisco, you know, we. had a friendship, you know, and that's. the reason why I came and I don't know. if you any of you guys know this, but. when I first got here and our first team. meeting, he stated our goal. He said, "Man, our goal this year is to win our.

division and get home field advantage in. the playoffs.". And I'm sitting. in that auditorium. pissed. I'm literally. like I'm like angry. and I'm like, "Why did he not say our. goal is to win the Super Bowl?" I had. just gotten there, >> so I wasn't didn't feel like I was in. it. I haven't proven anything yet,

>> you know. And. fast forward, Jacksonville. >> Oh, man. >> You know, we get our butts kicked, >> you know, and I and I had I had a bad. game, but I still had to go talk to Mike. the next day. Yeah. I said, and this was. all I just said, Mike, you know, we. attained our goal this year. He said, "What are you talking about, Bill?".

>> I said, "You stated our goal first day. of training camp. I remember it like it. was yesterday.". And I said, "You better. change it next year." And when we came. in, our first meeting, the goal, he. stated it was to win a Super Bowl. >> Y. >> but I don't know. I don't know if we win. 97 if 96 doesn't happen. >> because it it.

agree, man. >> It changes cuz you and I was on that. bench, man. We sat on that bench after. that game. >> Seemed like it forever, did you? >> And I just could not believe what. happened. I was looking at the. scoreboard thinking, dude, this is a. this is a dream. This can't exactly. >> this cannot this cannot be true. >> And it was and you and I sat there, man. And but what it did was it made me. >> I know we all individually said, man, I. would never feel this way again. >> I don't ever want to feel this damn way. again. >> And. >> the next year, the I mean the next year.

and the year after that, man, you you. could feel it, man. Like we weren't. going to put ourselves in that situation. ever again. But. >> guys, you guys know we didn't win our. division. No, >> we didn't get homefield advantage in the. playoffs. We had one yet. >> Wild card, bro. >> We got one. >> We got Jacksonville at home. We got them. back. >> And remember cuz Mike said cuz Mike said. we had got word that when they was found. out they were playing. >> Oh, they were happy. They were. celebrating. We started out. great and then we go on that lull at the. end. Uh we lose to Pittsburgh, we lose.

to Pittsburgh, >> we lose to uh Kansas City, >> Kansas City, dude. kick the 57 yd field. goal with no time on the clock. And then. we go Monday night the 49ers and they. beat the brakes off us. Jared Rice had. been out the whole year cuz he tore his. ACL the first game. He comes back. against us and catch two. I SAID, "HOW. THE MAN COME IN WITH A TORN ACL AND. CATCH TWO TOUCHDOWN?". >> THEY ATE my ass up that day too by the. way. >> They knocked me out the game. I was out. the game first quarter. >> It didn't take much to knock you out. [laughter].

Locked your ass up. He [laughter] called his. head. >> But I I think I think for me and and. everybody can speak to it. I'm not so. sure 97 happens if 96. >> agree. I I I agree. It was it was. brutal, man. >> I agree. Yeah. >> Like we was all in shock. >> Yeah. >> I remember I remember going home. >> I literally had on a robe on the couch. for three or four days straight. I went.

to the bathroom and I just went back on. the couch and the only thing that. snapped me out of it was my son. Devin. came in there and he all smiling and. [ __ ] I'm mad as hell. >> still fuming. >> Yeah. >> He said, "Daddy, [clears throat]. >> can I go to the next game?" I was like. [laughter]. I started laughing. I said I said, "Damn, bud. Um, yeah, it's going to be a. minute." He's like, "What?" I said, "Yeah, we lost." He's like, "What? Y'all. lost?" I said, "Yeah, we ain't got a.

game for a while." And I literally got. up that day. I remember calling you. >> and we went back to the we went back to. the weight room. >> Y. >> I took those four, five days off and I. started back working out. >> And then every I think like you said. that. >> it was so important to the ones who was. there. >> and and I'm going say this for the team. that the Broncos have what we. experienced last year and coach brought. all those guys back. they feel what it. felt like to lose if uh the championship.

game. >> before you go to Super Bowl. >> And I said, he brought all the guys back. who felt that pain cuz that off season. for us. >> was ridiculous. It was like every guy. that came in and we brought some free. agents in, they didn't have a say. They. had to adopt to the culture and feel the. pain that we had. So when Truck and and. and and Neil and all those dudes, they. was great guys where they were, but when. they felt what we felt, >> they had to buy in. >> and they bought in so quick. >> And that's what I believe, like you say,

took us over the top because. >> everybody was like, we was we were if we. didn't beat you by 20 points, >> we was pissed. We didn't want nothing. close. We wanted to leave no doubt that. we was the best team going for three. years running, not just, you know, that. >> I love when Mike used to say that after. the meeting, man. And you be like, "Guys, if you don't beat this team by 40. points, you should be getting [laughter]. I mean, don't they get paid? [laughter] What. >> the hell? They beat what I wonder what. they coach telling them. If you don't. beat these guys by 20 point,

>> but that was so hard. >> But he steal that.". >> Exactly, man. Just beat them. >> Oh my god. >> And And he he always ended with. embarrassing. We want to embarrass these. guys. We just don't want to beat them. We want to embarrass them. And I'm like, I'm I'm good with that. But I'm like, we. get up by 20 points and he pull us out. like we can't. I try to get some. [laughter]. I got me 110. I try to let's get 150, 160. But he wasn't like that. Also, I. think I think the single greatest event. that really shaped our 97 season is that.

after we had that team meeting after. what happened in San Francisco. >> That was the single greatest event. >> Yeah. We don't have 97 if we don't have. 96. But that Monday night, what happened. in San Francisco when we had a team. meeting because there were a lot of. things that was surface that was. bubbling but no beneath it because we. had a lot of guys that were thinking. they were better than what they were. >> And I'm like and and and it you could. you could see the like some of the. things that we practicing and we were.

letting stuff skate. >> Mhm. >> Oh well he he'll he he'll correct in the. game or he'll get it right over here. And then when we had that team meeting I. I I'll never forget the team meeting. All the coaches, Mike says, "I'm gonna. let y'all handle it.". >> Yep. >> So, all the coaches get up, walk up out. the room. I remember it like yesterday. >> John's here. I'm here. We get up. Okay. What's on your mind? Well, you don't. have to tell me what's on my back. I. got, you know, I got stuff in my shoes. [laughter]. So, tell me what's on my mind today. And.

I said, "Look, whatever transpired in. this thing today, it's not going to be. personal. And we're never having another. team meeting again. So, whatever you got. on your chest, Whatever you got on your. mind. Whatever you got on your heart, >> speak it. >> And Romo, you said what you said. And I. remember I was looking around at guys. and God was like, guys had the head down. like I don't know. I don't know if I. believe this man. Damn. Cuz we let this. slide. People going to be looking at us. and what they going to think about us.

And I was like, and I remember John. John said, "Guys, the man done did. everything except get on his knees and. said he was sorry. Either we gonna move forward or we gonna. move backward.". And I remember even after the meeting, me and Romo had a private conversation. and he looked me in my eyes. He said, "Sharpie, I was wrong." He said, "My. emotions got the best of me." He said, "But I tell you as a man as I'm standing. before you, that won't ever happen. again.".

>> We left it. We squashed it right there. >> and we went on to beat hell out of. everybody else that we played against. And we [clears throat] got we got. >> a year straight. >> Yeah. >> We lose another game for a year after. that. >> Yeah, we did. Cuz we [clears throat] we. we ran we Hey cuz uh we beat cuz Seattle. was the last game of the regular season. Beat the. >> No. No. The uh the Chargers. The. Chargers. >> We blew the doors off the Chargers. >> Yeah. >> Run through the playoffs. >> We Well, we didn't run through the. playoffs. We get Jacksonville. We beat. the brakes off them. Rush for over 300. >> Then we go on the road to Kansas City.

Kansas City had beat us 57 yard field. goal by Stoovich. >> Yeah. >> Cuz I remember. Mike told us we before we started this. journey. He said, "Let me ask you a. because he said this during the um the. Super Bowl.". >> He's like, "We we can beat this. These. teams, they're not that good, guys.". Like, well, you know, and something. about the way Mike would say stuff, he. really had you believing that they ain't. that good. >> But he's right. He's right. Cuz after we. lost that game, I don't know if you guys. felt that, but I walked off the field. thinking, "Oh, yeah. If we played them. again, yeah, we we win this game. I.

mean, it was like it was like a loss, but it was like we had actually won. >> cuz we had gave the game because we had. been leading the whole game. The whole. game and somehow they end up, like I. said, what's the likelihood of that guy. making another 50 something yard field. goal this time walks off. But I knew the. toughest game for us. >> was going to be pissed on because of the. way they beat us when we went there the. last time. I was like, man, we got I. said, cuz they got they a 34 team. They. big. They physical. I'm talking about. they are physical physical offens.

middle linebacker and I remember Alex G. told uh uh Grip he said Grip. >> if you block it one time in his chest. I'm going to take your ass out the game. [laughter]. >> he say I want him cut every single time. >> but Grip tried his first game. Yeah, >> give him credit. Rip was tried. He tried. a few times, >> but he's 300 pounds. >> And and uh my homeboy Eden very well. [laughter]. that they had a tight end. No one even.

now the score 24-21 and they going to. kick the ball off. It's a little outside. of two. I like we got to milk it. >> What a catch though. What a catch. >> Milk it, >> man. Hold on. Y'all know how Mike. thought offensively. There's. a lot of storylines. Dan, rest his soul. He was the coach here for a number of. years. took the Broncos to three Super. Bowls. Um Mike Dan had relieved Mike of.

his duties. >> The the the tension between coach Reeves. and John. So there is a lot of. storylines and. like you know they coming to me. I don't. know what y'all want me to say. Man, I. don't know nothing about it, bro. That. was my third year. I'm just happy to be. on the team. They ain't running nothing. by me. I mean, we we know it was a. little some some detention, you know, some tension, but it wasn't nothing that. we thought about. And. we get into the game and like you said, Rod, you didn't catch a pass in the ne. in the first Super Bowl and now you get. five. >> I had five at the half for 150. >> at the half. of those things that like even the the. bomb that I caught and it come back to. something you said earlier um when coach. asked him to get in. Hey, we need you in. he didn't even blink about doing it. Well, the play I caught on, we made that. play up right before we ran it. >> Literally, we was running keep pass and. and Eugene Robinson tried to jump Ed on. the crosser, he run it down flat and I. was usually clear it out. He said, "Hey, look, we're going to call 19 keep pass. You run a post." I was like, "What?" He. said, "Only we only told you and John.".

But we look at these guys now and. you see how two receivers they catching. all these passes and I'm sure Ed Ed is. probably thinking about like damn. Eugene Robinson, I'm not picking on him. But he played for Green Bay the year. before. And there's two really big pep. talks he gave on both sidelines. Yes. Neither of which really resulted in a. win for them. But as soon as Rod after.

the night before caught that touchdown. over the top of him, it was over in my. mind. And I I played on some pretty good. teams. >> The New York Giants team won a Super. Bowl right before I got there. One of. the best teams in history with the. 49ers. We won by like 25 points or. something against the Chargers. And and. it was a race to see who was going to be. the MVP. And at one point, Jerry hurt. his shoulder and I got me a quick catch. I'm like, I'm going to Disney World. [laughter]. >> It's got to happen. So So going into. that game against Atlanta, I mean, anything can happen, right? They ran a. kickoff back. anything happened. But as.

soon as Rod cut that touchdown, in my. opinion, it's just a matter of who's. getting the MVP and who's going to. Disney World. This one, this game is. over. And John went into that game with. a little extra. Coach Shanahan went into. that game with a little extra. And some. of you guys played for that team, but. there there was more on the line in that. game. Yes. And there was no doubt in my. mind based on the makeup of the people. that are here and other our other. teammates that are not here. >> No doubt in my mind. >> Yeah. >> No doubt. cuz that was cuz that's when. he said, "Guys, if you don't win this. game by 50," I'm like, "Bro, that's a". Because we had played him the year.

before. Remember, we had played him in. the in the dome the year before. We beat. him. It was a close It was a close game. cuz that's when uh. >> Elum end up getting hurt and Ruin came. in to kick and was kicking the kick the. center in the butt. >> Yes. I went to high. school in Allentown, Pennsylvania. Work. ethic, toughness. I knew what I expected. out of Mobes and he proved it on the. field. I knew we could count on. >> uh him. when I got to Denver. I know he wanted. to be a starting linebacker. Everyone. wants to be a starter. He he walked out. and became a leader on special teams. with a smile on his face every single. day. He made me happy just listening to. him, [laughter] right? I loved when you. guys would make fun of people wearing. clothes. TD. Ti, that was almost wrong of what they. did to you rookie year. You were a. seventh round running a seven string. running back. I remember they must have. given you 30 carries in a row against. the first team defense and I didn't. think you'd be able to walk off the. field. And he went from that scout team.

running back's the worst position in all. of football because those plays are. scripted for the defense and you're. running on a brick wall. Never quit, never stopped, could barely run. I'm. like, this dude's not only is he. talented, but he's tough. He's going to. be good. Shannon, you're the only player. I ever played with that was open every. single time he ran around. I know. [laughter]. >> I know that because of what you would. tell John when you came back from. >> Oh, you heard that? >> Yeah. >> Yeah. [laughter]. But but hey, workout fiend, diet fiend, chip on the shoulder. You already good. before I got there, but I'm like, I know. we can count on you. And then when I saw.

your banter with John, I'm like, oh. yeah, it's on. Like, you know, I I get. it now. Rod, we came out, threw it. together. I was like, I was cut and then. a backup, but I'd won Super Bowl, so I'd. seen greatness and I knew what greatness. looked like. And greatness looked like. the dudes in this room. But Rod and I. started as backups. We were having so. much fun. That was one of my most fun. years ever, just decleing people and. having little $5 side bets. >> And the the greatest compliment in the. world is when Coach Shanahan would. rewind the film and show us knocking. somebody down away from the play. Had. nothing to do with it, but that was so.

much damn fun. Romo completely. psychotic. We know that, right? [laughter]. But but you know what? He did play. He. every single thing he did was to be the. best football player he could be every. single day of his life. And he brought. in trainers that I used. They helped me. become a better athlete. So, I. appreciate that, you know, and my, you. know, my kids have used some of the. trainers that I got introduced to when. we were playing back in the day. So, it's made a difference in my life. And. then this guy, I remember him the first. time I played against them when I was. with the Giants. And I had to ask my. coach five times, wait a minute, 27,

that's a that's a linebacker, right? No, that's the safety. No, no, I I want to. make sure I'm not blocking something. That's not the safety, [laughter] right? >> And like and all that talk about hitting. and not hitting, nobody wanted to run. into this dude whether he hit high or. low or anything else. the silent. assassin. And I remember trying to block. him. I'm just grateful he didn't truck. me on every play, but I would kind of. mirror him, make it look like I was. blocking when really he's just looking. over me. But you have guys of character. like this and work ethic like this. Like. the dudes in this room, it it's no. secret, and I think about it all the. time. We should have won three in a row.

I I might disagree. We should have beat. Jacksonville. We had one bad What were. we 14-2? We have one bad game. >> and and you look back and there's two or. three plays that we could have. controlled in that game. >> and then we we figured out a way to do. it. I was with coach Kubiaak in the. weight room the day after that loss. And. you know it's window or aisle, >> right? >> Go home. You go home. It's too good for. your home. Like you don't need to be. here. >> And I we were in the wait room and Kubs. leans over to me and says, you know, hey. Eddie, you know how I know we're going. to be good. And I'm still in shock from. the loss. And he's like, check out the.

room. We had over half our team lifting. weights the day after the Jacksonville. loss. >> Mhm. >> And I'm like, oh my gosh, we I mean this. this is the team. >> We let this one get away and there's no. guarantee. But I knew it and and I don't. know how you stayed quiet for two weeks. leading up to the Super Bowl against. Green [laughter] Bay. >> You didn't give them any bulletin board. material, but there was no doubt in my. mind. >> Yeah. >> And nobody was happier than we were when. Moses knocked down that pass at the end. >> Yeah. We knew we were going to kick. >> We knew it was over. [laughter] And then. the ne the next year the next year like. there was no doubt we were going to blow.

the doors off Atlanta. And it's easy to. say now we won. But I really believe. that. And I had seen greatness. And I. saw it in this room. I see it in you. guys. And I saw it with our teams that. we had. We had something special. >> Yeah. P. Because I think the thing is we. went to practice. Our job was not. letting the ball hit the ground. >> Exactly. >> And and and if the ball hit the ground. more than probably two times, we going. to probably have to go back through that. period. >> Mike didn't play that. There was there. was a level of expectation. I mean, he. expected perfection. >> Yeah. >> That's what he expected. That's how we.

practiced. It wasn't no, okay, I'm good. with that. And there were times that, you know, the defense might make a. mistake and Greg was like, no, we good. Mike said, no, hell, we not good. read. it again. >> Yeah. >> No, we want to make sure everybody is. where they're supposed to be. And that's. a Hey, >> that little tyrant. >> I'm going add this to when is Mike. Shanahan going to be in the Hall of. Fame? Cuz it's kind of ridiculous he's. not in there. But he he will get there. We know that. But you can't win without. the coach. I came to play for the. Broncos because of Mike Shanahan and. because of John Elway. I didn't know.

everybody else. John's dad coached me at. Stanford. I knew how great John was. I. wanted to play for him. >> And it also is John believing in. everyone in this room. Not just not just. the offense, the defense, special teams, ran over to TD during the preseason, right? Before you had, you know, made. your name, >> right? But John believed in all of us. and even in Super Bowl 33, right? I. mean, Rod was crushing. You probably. could have thrown to Rod every play the. whole game. And then the second half, they start throwing to me. I'm like, what? They tell John to start throwing. to me now. Like, you don't need to be. throw. I'm glad you are, but you don't. need to. But he trusted anyone. Anyone.

that was on the field, he believed in. him and he trusted him. And I think that. that's like I don't know if John gets. enough credit for that. Obviously, everybody knows he had a cannon arm. He's a Hall of Famer, >> but his ability to get along with. everyone on the team and and have them. believe that he believed in him. Like. that stuff makes a difference. >> It it really does. But the one thing you. knew, you wouldn't taking your ass on. that field if you didn't know what the. hell you were doing. [clears throat]. >> Period. >> Y. >> that's the guy that that I felt like the. first person I needed to earn respect.

was from number seven. >> Absolutely. >> Yeah. Now, you don't remember the first. week that I almost botched it, do you? >> What' you do? >> So, you know, I ain't practice with John. the whole damn camp. >> Yeah. >> Wednesday, Mike calls me up and says, "You're a starting running back, right? We got practice in a few hours." Go to. practice. We went do our first team. >> Yeah. >> I'm in the huddle away. >> You I think at that time, yeah, you two. were in there, too. I'm in a freaking. huddle with John Elway. And so, they. call 18 handoff first team period. John.

comes out, gives me the ball, and I. fumble the ball, drop the ball on the. ground, and I'm like, "You got to be. kidding me, man." So, I pick the ball. up, and you know, Mike is 40 yards down. the field. I draw down to the run, draw. down. As I'm coming back, Kubiaak is. coming. He He met John. So, he's walking. away from the huddle, right? And Coupe. says, "Come here." So, I jog over to. Coupe. Coup says, "Uh, John says, "You. need to give him a bigger pocket.". >> And so, I was like, "Damn." So, I get to. the huddle. They call up next play. It's. a pass play. I'm like, "Okay, cool.".

>> I forget what it is. John goes back. He. looks right, looks left. I'm on a check. down five yard. He looks at me, >> throws the ball to me. >> You don't remember this? >> You drop it. >> I drop the ball. [laughter]. >> I pick the ball up and I jog down, you. know, whatever 40 yards down the field. I'm I'm like, "You got to be [ __ ]. kidding me." So Mike calls me over. Mike. says, "Uh, hey, I might determine who's. on this team, but John determines who. plays." And so jog back to the huddle. again. And I mean, a few plays later, I.

get the ball. I I don't botch it up. after that, but the first two times that. this dude gives me the ball, dropped put. the ball on the carpet, >> I'm like, "Oh man.". >> But you you guys know this and maybe not. everyone does, but there were. quarterbacks in the league when we. played, right, that would have just done. this. They wouldn't have said they would. have looked at the head coach and just. done this like that's how serious it. was. A drop or a fumble. I've seen guys. cut over that, right? And this was. earlier in your career, but that I mean. that speaks volumes about how much he. believed in you. >> Oh, I'm not I'm not I'm not the player I. am without John. Yeah.

>> Oh yeah, >> because I mean Atwater we joke about it. like I'm talking about boy I blew every. play. >> I ain't know nothing. >> I blew Hey, >> it's coming out now. [laughter] All. these years. >> No, no, no. Seriously. Hey, I a go in. motion. >> I go I go Hey, they put me in motion so. John can tell me what I got the corner. [laughter]. block the end. So, you know what I'm. saying? And he cuz I've been I'm in. practice and so you know I was like yeah. yeah he he going over the play. Yeah.

Yeah. Get in there, go in motion. I John. move his foot. I go talking about. talking about what I got. [laughter] I. said, "Ah, damn." And that's when water. came to me on the sidelines. SO, YOU. KNOW, WELL, YOU KNOW, Water Hill here, you know, I'm I'm looking at him and and. and Kahuna, Dennis Smith, and see how. they do things. And I'm like, "Okay." I. said, "Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. I'm good. I'm good." He put his [laughter] He's. like, "Shark, you know damn well you. ain't know that play.". >> But but he all but he but he believed in.

me. He believed that cuz coach Reeves. said, "You know, you too big, too fast, too strong not to make some money.". >> And John told me says, >> "You you got a lot of ability. You can. play in this league. You can play a long. time. Just, you know, just learn the. plays." And he was like, >> "You know everything. You remember. everything. You can write. You can quote. people and and and raps and lyrics. He. say just learn the plays like that. It's. not that hard. It's not hard to you cuz. you know them. It's [laughter]. trigonometry to me. But once I got the.

hang of it, he went to bat for me. He. went to bat for me. I'm here when they. tried to tried to trade or they you was. gonna be in that. I don't know if you'd. have been the 15th pick, but they was. gonna trade me after Mike's first year. uh to the uh uh the Cardinals for Eric. Swan and then uh um but I'm here because. of him. And like I said, everybody was. wouldn't have that kind of patience. >> Yeah. >> With somebody like me. I was a seventh. round draft pick. Maybe with a first. round or second round draft pick, you. see some ability, you'll have that level.

of patience. But for him to show the. level of patience that he showed with. me, >> but but your work ethic and you know the. the the type of player you were, the. type of person you were, >> it made it hard to just just give up on. you. You know what I'm saying? So yeah, you. >> but see the thing is like and uh uh Lilo. was still telling the story about how. like when I got here, you know, it's. like like when I make the team, they got. me on the cheap, but they're going to. have to pay me in the long run. And I've. always been kind of vocal. Uh and then.

as some of the guys started and I got. became a better and better player, I. became more and more comfortable being a. being able to speak. Um but you know, you think you working hard and I. remember my grandpa used to say, "Boy, never mistake habit for hard work.". >> The thing that I'm most proud of is that. everybody when they describe me, they. say, "Well, how hardworking he is, >> how disciplined he is, how dedicated he. is." Like before guys were even thinking. about bringing their own food to the to. I brought my own food. >> I ate the same thing. people, you know,

I'm in the wait room every every. Tuesday, hey, meet me up there. We going. to Hey, meet me up there. >> Every every Tuesday, there was not one. Tuesday. And I remember, you know, when. we got back from Miami, we didn't get. back till like 5 or 6:00 in the morning. We went straight to the weight room. Me. and him started working out cuz I know. I'm going to come back over after that. one. >> at 5 getting home 5 5:30 in the morning. I ain't coming back. So, we got But. that's the thing that I like most when I. hear. >> my teammates describe. me to other people, >> right? Cuz what you think might not be.

what somebody else thinks of you, but to. hear and the greatest compliment after. Williams gave me a compliment. He said, "You're the greatest teammate I played. with." I'm not saying you're the. greatest player I played with, but the. greatest teammate. And to hear TD when. you told me say Sharpie man, we miss. you. >> He said the locker room wasn't the same. Once you left, bro, he said the locker. room was the same. >> Is anyone surprised to hear that Shannon. has a podcast? [laughter]. >> You know why? Cuz he's authentic, right? You said that about a couple other guys. But everyone here, everyone's different, but everyone's authentic. They're who. they are, right? And we share the, you.

know, the will to be the best together. and to earn the respect of our. teammates. But you're so authentic. Like. everyone knew, >> you know, 30 years ago, you could be on. TV or doing a podcast like if they had. podcast back then. >> Can you imagine podcast? >> There would have been some bulletin. board material before. >> Would that be a good thing though? >> No. Back. anything. >> and we could literally we would say. anything to each other because we cared. so much about each other we did every I. mean when him and his wife was having. when he was in trouble with his wife I. knew about it you know what I'm saying. stuff like that it was like we were so. close it was no cell phones it was no go. to the internet it was no Instagram it. wasn't none of that it was each other. >> like that's why we hung out and did the. stuff we did and and made our career is. special. >> You know, I couldn't help but get better. watching this dude, >> right? >> He on defense, but I'm seeing his.

intensity. I'm like, >> he was the greatest teammate to have on. your team. He's the worst guy to have on. the other side. If I do this, what are you. thinking? If I do that, what are you. thinking? So, he's asking me obviously. uh uh I'm one of the better tight ends. in the league. So he's like, "If I can. if I can deal with him in practice, you. guys in the game ain't got no chance. because you're not quick as he is. You're not a student of the game. You. cuz I I really understood I understood.

the leverage and what you were trying to. play what you was trying to do to me and. what you trying to keep me okay if you. try you trying to keep me from getting. outside. Well, I'm my job is to make you. think that I'm going inside." So you. give that outside leverage up so now I. can get across your face and to get. outside. So, I think we all made each. other better because there are times, you know, I'm asking the DB, "Hey, bro, >> how are you able to jump on that? I. thought," he say, "Sharpie, every time. you've been getting on your toes when. you get ready to break out or you you. know, you say you hey, you you you. giving me a you giving me something, you.

give me a tail." And so, that's how I. think we made each other better. >> Steve did that to me a lot of times. >> Yeah. >> When I was a rookie, he'd come up to me. and I I was tipping off where I would go. cuz I stare I was staring at it. I want. to see what's going on. >> What the hell's going on on that side? So I'm I'm I'm peeking over. I got to. see what's on the on the strong side. And he came up to me one time. He said, "Man," he said, "Dude, every time you. run this play, you tip it off." And I'm. like, "How you know that?" Because you. look cuz you keep you you peek over. there right before the play or something. like that. So to your point, man, it's.

like getting clues like that during. practice really sharpen everybody's. skill. >> Practicing against y'all made games easy. for me. >> For sure. >> Oh, yeah. >> Shoot. I was so explosive, too. Yeah. >> Like, man, if we can, you know, stop him. sometimes, we going to be all right. >> Uh, the thing is when I first got here. at water, you know, practices was a lot. different. >> Yeah. >> I mean, we hit training camp. We hit. >> physical boy. >> Physical physical. Romo, you know, you. came up in the 80s and it was it was no. no nonpatted practice. It was no walk.

walkth through. >> It was no walkthrough. Like I said, we. had on pads on Friday, >> shorts and pads. That was shells to us. And so when Mike came out came out and. got us said like like people practice. like this. >> Yes. Yes. [laughter] And you like when. you had to block I mean when I came in. you know as I was a wide receiver at. first we literally had to block. So. Atwater would take that step and then. the the wide receiver would really try. to try to block him. Man,

him and Dennis, man, I was like, look, the thing that saved me, I was I was. weight room strong, so I could hold my. own. But man, I to see him and Dennis, I. was like, damn, I feel bad for Mark and. BJ [laughter] back. I was like, but but. that that made that made me better and I. wanted to make the team cuz I wanted to. be able to be a veteran so I can help. somebody like Steve and like uh uh. Kahuna, Dennis Smith, like they helped. me. That was my job was to pass along to.

pay it forward like they had paid it to. me. So that's why when you came in and. you came in, I took you guys under my. wings and you was telling the story like. >> you couldn't get on the plane with bull. drive. >> The only person that was allowed to get. on the plane with bull drive was right. there [laughter]. >> cuz Ed didn't care. >> No, he didn't. >> Ed brought his jacket and a backpack. is lonely. It's tedious and it requires. a commitment that everybody can't. be a part of because they're going to be. a lot of times the PTAs. You ain't going. to be able to go to the recital and the. practices. you're not gonna be. [clears throat] able to go to. >> How were your partners able to handle. that? Knowing what you wanted. You met. your wife. I think all you guys met your. wives in college. You met your wife in. college. You met your wife in college. You met your wife in college. You met. your wife shortly after you arrived in.

Denver. >> Explain to our audience the sacrifice. that your partner had to make, your. wife, in order for you to achieve the. level of success that you achieved. >> Yeah. I'll say I got lucky. Really? I. really [laughter] got lucky. And you you. would all agree, I think. >> Yeah. And Lisa gets along with everyone, but she also understood the commitment. to the game, and she never wanted to. make uh, you know, force me to sacrifice. anything. She wanted me to be the best I. could be. I think she did believe if I'm. the best that I am, maybe that'll be. what's best for our family as well. So,

I had unconditional support. She played. soccer at Stanford. She played like six. sports in high school. So, she knew the. commitment and the dedication that was. necessary. But, man, we had four kids. while I was away. Matter of fact, when I. got cut by the Giants, our son Max was. two months old. I didn't see him for. another couple months because I had to. go out and try to make a team in. California. So, you know, raising four. kids often times by yourself when I was. off at camp, hanging out at Club Shay. Shay. [laughter]. Um, and just the long nights and the. dedication and and it's not just on the. field, right? I mean, you got to eat.

right, get your sleep, you got to work. out. It's the off seasonasons. There's. always this feeling like, man, could we. be doing more fun things as a couple? But luckily for me, she understood that. commitment and she knew how important it. was to me as well. She always supported. me and I feel blessed. >> Yeah. Well, I I kind of feel the same. way. My wife and I, you know, we met. early on in college and, >> you know, she had seen me kind of go. through the work, you know, having to. practice and go to the games and all. that stuff uh in college. So, she kind.

of, >> you know, knew knew what it was. And. then when we had kids, um, she loved. being a mother, too. and she loved. taking care of the kids and she didn't. really need me there to do a lot of the. the the stuff. Um, and you know when I. had time I would but when I didn't when. I didn't have time or just say if I came. home from work and I was you know too. tired. >> she that never was an issue with her you. know she always uh. >> because she was a medical student. >> Yeah. She was she was in med school. Yeah. In med school for a while. >> She gave up that like I'mma support you.

>> Yes. Well, not only support me, but you. know, for for the for the for the. family, for the kids and that. Yeah. Um, but yeah, she she made a lot of. sacrifices. And, >> you [clears throat] know, I you all know. she's the backbone of our family, you. know. She Yeah, she she's she got it. right. You have to be with someone who. get they have to get it. And what does. that mean? You just have to get it. You. have to know the commitment. You have to. know the sacrifice. And you you have to. support that lifestyle because so we've. seen so many people. >> that aren't in aren't in those types of.

rel and it's hard to do, right? But. there's a lot of people not in those. relationships. >> My story ain't as peachy as yours. [laughter]. >> Well Well, I know detail. [laughter]. >> This joker here cuz he spending half the. time in the hobby chamber. He the. chiropractor table, the [laughter]. massage table. He's doing a thousand. things even though he's home. He ain't. home. >> He's not home. He ain't present. >> I was never home. [laughter]. >> It was always, okay, what could I do to.

get better, right? Who do I need to see? Who do I need to fly in? Right? You know. what buddies need work? You know, and. you know, I think for a lot of, you. know, for a lot of people, they think, "Oh, well, you get five, six months off. Wow, what a. >> that's when the work begins." Exactly. you know, and you know, Julie understood. that. >> Yeah. >> And you know, I have two great kids and. >> you know, I got to take them, you know,

during the season once a week, >> I got to take them to school, >> right? >> You know, and they still talk about it, >> you know, to this day. >> Mo, >> yeah, >> I mean, it was a struggle. I mean, initially, >> right? you know, every woman wants to be. number one, >> right? >> They don't like being put on the back. burner. And that was something that was. hard for her to get early on. But, uh, as as things progressed, she understood. where all these amenities came from.

[laughter]. So, eventually she got on board, but for. a while there, there was uh it was it. was tough trying to get them to. understand there's a sacrifice that. needs to be made on both parts, right? >> You know, I'm making a huge one, you. know, to make sure that you guys are. safe. put my body on the line and. everything else. But, uh, once the kids. came, I think she she understood she had. a hobby, >> right? >> You know, something to do that takes her. mind off of me and it kind of alleviated. the the stress that she was going. through, you know, trying to figure out.

where I was at all times. And, you know, it wasn't so much the football part, it. was the everything else that comes along. with football, the appearances you got. to keep up, right? >> That that created a lot of turmoil, but. you know, I think once she got it, everything started to go go smoothly. Yeah. >> Well, you got M I mean you got married. what? In 97? >> Me? Yeah. Yeah, I got married in 97. We. just celebrated our 29th anniversary um. on May 24th. So, I'm going be shooting.

for 30 next year. >> So, [laughter]. um I think um meeting my wife in college. um her being a track athlete, she. understood that part, you know, the. workout. Oh, I got to go do this. But I. think it was more of the sacrifice of. once you start having kids, >> she didn't understand that it was no. longer about me because now I have. brought kids into this world that I am. responsible for because coming into the.

NFL, I was responsible for me. >> Yeah. >> And her. Yeah. >> But we weren't even married. So it could. always be like, "Oh, she could leave me. at any time." But here I am now trying. to forge this journey, trying to make it. in the NFL. So once we got married and. start having kids, I was like, "This is. different, >> right?" and not being able to be there. for her because something football. related. She understood it, but it took. its toll at some point.

>> and she never really understood, well, okay, well, if practice get out, practice over at 4:30 and I ain't. getting home till 7, well, something. ain't adding up. The math ain't matter. So [laughter] I'm like, okay, well, because I was so caught up in building. the camaraderie amongst the fellas, it's. nothing for us to get out of meetings, go get a lift in and pop a shot right. there. They could always start with a. couple of shots. Next thing you know,

one hour, two hours went by, >> my ass should have been at home. >> And now I'm walking in the door. Okay, the kids, she about to put the kids to. sleep. And you're like, "Dang, I know I. should have brought my ass home, but I'm. hanging out with the fellas." And all I. tell her, I was I was in the locker. room. I'm hanging out with the fellas. And she like, "Well, you need to bring. your butt home instead of hanging out. cuz you with them all day, >> right?". >> And. >> for your spouse not to really understand. that camaraderie part.

>> Yeah. >> of just hanging out. So we playing. spades and those games could last. forever because the competition is still. there. It doesn't have to be on the. field, but it's still there because. that's what we do. We compete at. everything we do. And that's what I. loved about John. Regardless of what it. was, he was going to compete. >> First of all, practice was over at 6:30, >> right? >> Yeah. >> 6. [laughter]. >> Just making sure we got But yeah. So, I. would think I would think that sacrifice.

is always going to be hard on. even spouses that play sports. But. knowing. what the team means to you cuz you all. that's all you're thinking about is the. team and sometimes that family life. suffers. >> when you can't be there when your spouse. wants you to be there and that's always. tough and I think for the kids all they. want is daddy home. They don't know what. daddy what time daddy getting up what. time daddy coming home. They just want.

daddy home and to be around. And when. you have to go away to games, you know, either home games or you're going away. to the hotel on Saturday night, it's the. same thing. That's part of the sacrifice. because you're not there. Now, when they. come to the game, they get to see and. they're exposed to what daddy actually. does. But at the end of the day, if. they're younger kids, they don't really. understand. They just like, "Oh, that's. daddy right there." So we get the. enjoyment of being able to bring our. kids to the locker room, you know, but.

once that is over, it's back into the. real world of your wife is here, you're. here back playing football. So, it all. boils down to the sacrifice and you have. to be more mindful of the sacrifice that. your spouse is making because she's. doing everything that you need to do in. the household taking care of the kids. and you're able to go out and play a. kid's game that you've been playing. since you was 7 8 years old. So, it's. huge for me um to be able to survive the.

NFL. >> Yeah. >> And still be married for one. Um, true. that. >> But I definitely took my hat off to my. wife. She's been a godsend to me cuz I. don't know where the hell Well, I'd. probably be still playing football. [laughter] if we weren't together. But. at the same time, it's tough. It's. tough. But the sacrifice has always been. there. And I tell her, I can't tell her. enough that she's always been. appreciated because my kids have been,

like I said, just gold standard to me. You know what I'm saying? And I just. love my kids, you know, and they're out. doing their own thing. They're actually. adults now. And I owe it all to my wife. cuz she basically did the majority of. the childbearing and the child rearing. and everything. So, my hat goes off to. her. Michelle, if you see this, um, much. respect, but it's, uh, it's definitely. different to me. I didn't grow up here,

[laughter]. >> but it's definitely been different. But. like I said, I wouldn't change it for. the world. She allowed me to be able to. do and become the player that I was, the. teammate that I was, um, through a lot. of sacrifice. And that's just part of. it. Being in the professional world of. any pro sport, you're going to have to. have sacrifice, and you have to have a. spouse that's willing to do it for do it. with you. We talk about gambling and. everything that we did, the poppy shots, the playing the cards, you know, we. played in between and we going to tell. the story about going to the Super Bowl.

>> But the thing was is that we got predom. check. You just put the prede check. down. You ain't look at it. >> Just put the prede check down. Hey, if. two people make it, it goes back. If one. person made it and everybody else miss, you get all the prede. >> Me and this dude here, we shoot the. pile. >> I get a I don't know. I don't know where. the check, but he I think he got the. workout check because he's he's in the. workout program. I'm not there. But I. get a check. >> and I said, "Let's bet the check.". Almost said, "Bet it." So, we shooting,

we shoot, we shoot. [laughter]. We got to go to practice. We leave the. checks right there in in Ed's locker. right there in the corner cuz everybody. left the checks in Ed's locker right. there in the corner. We shooting. We. shooting. Shoot. >> We come back, we shoot. I make it. He. miss. I said, "Damn." So, I got his. check. I like, "Damn, homeboy. This This. ain't nothing right here. [laughter]. >> So I didn't I had no idea. I look at my. check. How about my check? >> [ __ ] I don't know. It was like 500.

[laughter] like 500,000. What the hell. you getting? Wait, wait, wait. Check. No, it wasn't. He thought it was. a. >> I thought it was a predom. It wasn't. >> It was an incentive check or something. >> So I ended up I was going to get his. little workout bonus. That little. $1,000. [laughter]. Whoa, whoa, whoa. You. can't look and see what it is.

So now we going down there, we. put a little bit the pot done got. astronomical as bit. Everybody passing. Everybody. nervous cuz now we already got like we. got like 10 15 maybe even 20,000 in the. pot. >> And then Willie, we ain't going to call. you name but anyway, Peanut [laughter]. say. >> Peanut. I ended. up breaking my collarbone. This is in. 99. I break my collarbone. The next week. he tears Achilles. We got a $25,000 bet.

He's like, he got one side. [laughter]. I ain't got no touchdowns. >> No. He said, "You know what, homeboy?". He said, "I'mma let you buy out." He. said, "I'mma let you buy out." He said, "But I need 12,000." He said, "I want. half. You got to pay me half.". >> Yeah. >> You know how we bet water? >> I want I want $500 in dimes. I want. $500. [laughter] THAT'S HOW I BET. CUZ I. WE ALL GOT MONEY. SO IF somebody Oh,

$1,000. What's a thous. ain't nothing for nobody for us. The. money that we were making back then. I. want to inconvenience you. I want you to. go to the bank and say, "You know what? I want $5,000 in quarters." [laughter]. So when they ask you, "Mr. Moy, what do. you need with all these quarters?" Man, I lost some bet shop. That's what I. would hear you say, >> man. That joker had me go get 12,500 of. Susan B. Anthony dollar, >> man. You know how heavy that is, dude. [clears throat]. [laughter]. >> He came in the building, right? He go. grab the laundry basket. No, laundry.

basket is huge. It's like the size of. this table right here. It's about this. high. He comes in the locker room, goes. out to the parking lot, >> goes in his car, he's loading these. stacks of these shoes be Anthony in the. laundry basket. >> and wheel that thing back up in here and. set it in his locker, stacking it up. like bricks. >> That's crazy. In his locker. >> Wow, >> dude. I was like, these dudes, man, that. was. >> You talking about inconvenience? I don't. even know how the hell you even get. $12,000 worth of suits me. >> Well, you got to go to the bank and tell.

them to order them. I'm lucky he ain't say no Buffalo. Nickels. That was that was going to. [laughter] be that was going to be my. next bet against somebody Buffalo. Nickels cuz that's how I got I got. Hawkeye like that. I bet Hawkeye Hawkeye. had to come. Come on. Y'all brawl. You. know his favorite [laughter] word was. calling somebody braw y'all. and it laid the foundation for the the. the Broncos that won the championship. This team that got so close this year, hopefully they're as as close as we. were, >> right? >> I don't think I I don't think enough can. be said about the closeness of a team. and how playing for another man, you ask. him to put everything that he's done and. put it in your hands. And you ask him to. do likewise, to do everything to trust. you to that eenth degree. and for us to. be able to sit here and and and I wish I.

could have had more um to talk about the. experiences of what we what we went. through and and and those backto-back. years, but those are some glory times. There were some low times also, >> you know, in 99 uh uh uh TD, you end up. tearing your ACL and and your career was. really never the same. I break my. collarbone, ended up having to go go to. Baltimore and come back. I think Romo, you you was here in 2000 and then you. end up leaving going to the Raiders. Yep. >> Uh, water 99. You leave and go to the. Jets. Uh,

>> and you end up breaking your you're. breaking your leg. I think what that was. 2001. >> Yeah. First game Monday. Right before. 911. >> And and so and and Mo. >> Mo was still here when I came back. Were. you here when I came back? >> Mhm. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. Yeah. He was back. >> Yeah. And so that those are those are. memories and times that you never. forget. and and and the the being in the. locker room, being on the practice. field, joking, being on the bus ride, being on the plane ride. We were talking.

about it before, bro. Man, what bus? Hey, hey, man. What bus? Uh uh uh Burns. is sharp on [laughter]. >> two. N. >> Let me get on bus three. Hey, >> you think you trying to prepare, you. know, prepare for a game, you thinking. more about what outfit you going to put. on versus day. >> Yeah. Yeah, you better. You better. You. better not get on the play with the boy. [laughter]. Cuz we had one teammate. We made him. come up out of here. He got he got on. the plane. [laughter] What? What are you. doing? He had no but tank top on. Come. up [laughter].

and and look. >> to be what you were able to accomplish. You went to a Pro Bowl. You won three. Super Bowls. But to see your son, to see. your offspring and to when I and. everybody seen the photo with him. sitting on my lap. We at the second we. at the second Super Bowl and he's. sitting on my lap. But to get an. opportunity to watch your son, uh, I. don't know how many games because at one. point in time you were coaching and so. you probably get an opportunity to see. him a whole lot, but now that you're not. coaching, you probably get an. opportunity to see him every week. What. is that like to see your son go out.

there and compete at the highest levels. and be one of the great players that's. currently in the NFL? >> Yeah, Lee and I have four boys. We love. them all. We're proud of all of them. They've all taken their own path. Christian grew up in the locker room. with you guys. >> He did. Yeah, >> he grew he was playing Power Rangers in. your locker. >> in training camp every year. >> and hanging out with Rod and but he he's. so observant and he's one of those men. now, right? But he was a kid who if he. really loved something, he did. everything he could like the guys in. this room to be the best he could. If he.

didn't, he couldn't talk him into having. anything to do with it, >> whether it's in school or whether it's. in sports. But he fell in love with. football at an early age. And I really. believe a big part of it was seeing this. locker room and being in there and being. part of uh the NFL. And I know when he. was seven, he played a game and uh. knocked down a pass at the end of a game. they wanted and since then. >> he was he was just a he's never wanted. to do anything else. >> And kind of like the work ethic that. we've we've talked about here, um he has. it. >> And so on the field, off the field, he's.

com completely committed to the game and. does every single thing he can to be the. best he can. He's obsessed like you in. your workouts, he's obsessed with taking. care of his body. And um and thank. goodness he has a wonderful wife and. Olivia and now a daughter that support. him and his journey through the NFL. But. but it's it's really weird because when. you're a kid, you look up the NFL and. these guys are larger than life. Then. you play in it and you're like, okay, >> you know, it's my teammates and then. when your kid plays, it's like those are.

my kids and his friends. >> Yeah. [laughter]. >> Right. Like they're just the guys he. played little league or high school or. college with or against and now they're. in the league. to these NFL guys who, you know, you still think sometimes. they're larger than life. They're just. my kids and their friends, right? >> And it's surreal to me, but this. football world's so small. You guys know. that, right? So, like in addition to. Christian playing and Max played and. Luke's playing for the Commanders, it's. you, you know, some it's like a family. It's like this family. >> Um, but now with your kids, Kyle.

Shanahan is my son's coach. >> Mike Shanahan was our coach, right? the. Kubiaak kids running around the football. boys are out there coaching, right? And. so now. >> my the kids of the guys that I played. with in coach are now in the league, but. it's still family. Like football really. is family in so many ways. Now we had a. tight-knit family here, >> but for me, because my kids play, because Christian and Luke and Max and. Dylan all played, it just. >> made that world explode exponentially. And so it's uh it is kind of strange to.

to go into every single NFL city and. know coaches or players on every single. team. And I wouldn't if my kids didn't. play. So it's been pretty cool for me. But as a dad, everyone that has a kid, you're a dad, man. You can't do anything. about what's happening on the field. >> I'm just so proud of all my boys for. having that same work e ethic that we. talked about and for being the best they. can be with what they have. >> Max is coaching. Is Max coaching? >> Yep. He's running back coach for the. Chargers. >> Chargers. Okay. >> Yeah. Romo, [clears throat] what was it. like being in the movie?

>> Oh, it was fun. [laughter]. >> It It was like this, >> right? >> Every day. Chris Rock comes out like a. machine gun. Everything out of his. mouth. But it's. >> Adam Sandler, you say something, he. thinks about it and makes a joke out of. it. And between the two of them, you. know, and then we're we're playing. football, right? >> You know, it it was so much fun. And.

what I did, I I started grabbing, you know, I was like, "The guys are. getting really sore. We need to take. care of them." I had massage. [laughter]. >> There you go. >> On the set. bucks. >> Oh, we we had a we had a protein protein. bar, >> you know, I set it up. I was like, >> don't surprise me, >> you know. But, you know, I I do got to.

tell one story about Bert Reynolds, >> okay? >> Who's just an amazing man. He would have. loved every one of you cuz [laughter] he. loves football players, right? >> And. >> he always wanted to talk to me. show we. were talk but we we film the way you. film you don't necessarily film the. whole movie in order right so. >> we're doing the actual longest yard he's. 68 years old.

>> and he looks and he his body probably. looked like it was 88 right. >> but he had to go in the game [laughter]. >> oh boy. >> and there was going to be a fumble. >> right. >> he had to bend over, pick it up, >> run around the left side of the edge. They set up a pad. He was going to hit a. little bench, jump, hit a pad, and Brian. Bosworth was.

at the last minute, they would cut, >> right? >> Put someone new in and Brian Bosworth. would hit the double, >> right? >> He said, "No, Brian Bosworth is hitting. me.". Oh my. >> And he said, >> and they said, "We can't. [laughter]. >> We can't do this. >> We may not make it out alive.". [laughter]. >> And uh well, you saw what happened. against Bo Jackson, [laughter] you know.

So, he was hilarious, but they said, "We. can't do that, >> right?". >> He quit the movie. Walked off the set. >> What? Wow. He quit. >> Wow. >> And we're all like, "This Bert Reynolds. just quit." [laughter]. >> And you know, so Adam goes to his. trailer and the director and they come. back and they talk to Brian say, "Brian, be careful.". So they're literally he comes back and.

he says, "Okay, but Brian's going to hit. me." And they do the play and this guy. picks up the ball, runs around like. really runs around the left side of the. line, hits the little thing, jumps. Bossworth comes over and right at the. last minute he kind of gives him a. little bear hug and then boom down on a. big pad on the on on the ground.

>> and uh he popped up. >> and he threw the ball at Brian's head. >> and he [snorts] said, "Hit me harder. next time." [laughter] And we're all. messing we're messing with Boss. [laughter]. Oh, it was fullblown. >> And he is steaming at this point, >> right? >> Hope they didn't do a hopefully they. didn't cut and do a retake.

>> We did We did another. >> [ __ ]. >> And Bosworth lights camera action. Picks. up the fumble, runs around. Boom. Bossworth comes full speed. and boom. Like when I say hits him, [laughter] he hit him. >> Uhoh. Isn't that. >> Barry Reynolds? >> And he popped up harder next time. >> And we did one more and it was a cut.

And I said, "That's why he's an icon.". >> Wow. >> Right there. >> Retirement. I'm ask each one of you guys this. When. did you know it was over? Ian. >> Oh man. And well, I had broken my leg on. Monday night and then uh spent every day. of the whole year trying to get back and. ready to play. Played week one, but you. know, I was never the same. Had another. surgery after that, had another surgery. after that and never really got back to. full speed. So, it got to the point.

where I knew that I was in pain when I. played and I knew that I'd never be the. player that I was. Had an incredible. career, had another offer to come back. and play and I just let Mike know I. think it's my time. Time to go be a. husband, be with my kids, right? the. body has kind of forsaken me and I'm. ready to move on and and you know what I. didn't know till I knew and then all of. a sudden I knew. >> when when did you know water? Um well. actually. uh I was with the Jets and uh we had a. practice running pads me and one of my.

teammates the defenders you know I was. running one way and looking into the. back field and he was run another way. and we we collided knees and um you know. I was told that it was just a sprained. knee you know and then after this you so. during the season I I missed several. games and I think I came back and had. played in in one or two more games, but. um not not a lot not a ton of time cuz. it still was a lot of pain there. Um. after the season was over, I got it.

checked out and they told me that I had. a torn patella attendant and uh I was. like, "Oh, man." And um and I was. thinking about trying to play again, but. then after after I heard that, I was. like, "Yeah, that's that's it's a wrap.". Yeah. I don't want to have surgery, do. all the rehab, and then, you know, it'll. be late in the uh in in the uh offseason. when I got back. So, uh I called it a. career, man. And. >> Romo, when when did you when did you. know it was time to [clears throat] call. it a call it a career?

>> I had uh. a bad concussion in the Super Bowl that. we lost when I was the Raiders. took on. the fullback and got rocked. Came back, trained my butt off that off. season. The first counter, you know, Mo. Collins came roaring down, hit me, I got. concussed again. M. >> every big hit I had,

>> you know, I was getting concussed badly. >> and I wasn't saying anything about it. because I knew at that point Yeah. >> you know, at. >> 36, 37 years old, >> concussion they So my last game. >> was here at mile high. I hit Clint. Portoris over the middle and the lights. were spinning on me. >> Damn. >> And I played the rest of the game.

squinting cuz if my eyes were open, the stadium was it was spinning on me. So, I I played like this and I played. the worst game of my life and I'm. sitting on the sideline as you know the. time's ticking away and you guys beat us. and I'm like. it I think it's over. >> Yeah. >> And I went to the hospital and you know. they basically then put me through a big.

>> the battery of test. >> Yeah. battery a test and they told me we. highly recommend you do not do [snorts]. this again, >> you know. So, time to give it up. >> When you know. >> um. I had to have I had to have hip surgery. I mean, I literally wore myself into the. ground for the game. just. the stopping and starting and falling.

and people falling on you and getting up. and remember I I I didn't miss the. offseason. >> Mhm. >> I went to 600 straight off seasonason. That one thing I was proud of coming. from a small school and you just get an. opportunity. >> and I never missed the offseason. played in a ton of games and I just. remember when that that socket my my hit. would come out of socket. >> and you know what you get it put back in. you go back on the field and you get it. put back in go back on the field and I. remember that that off season I had a.

nonweightbearing off seasonason I. couldn't even I couldn't even uh I had. to I I rode the bike or I did a step. meal I couldn't do nothing like on my. feet on the ground. >> for the whole entire offseason you know. I didn't miss offseason so I was there. every day and that was what I was doing. And I remember going into camp, you. know, I'm on I'm on IR for the first six. weeks, I think it was IR and and I. remember when he and I had I had I had. the surgery and I'm trying to come back.

and I I remember telling I still. remember the last game we played San. Diego. Uh. I told my sons I said it's over. He's. like what do you mean dad? I said it's. done. I said, "Physically, I can't go. back out there no more.". >> And they like like you said, you know, you get another year to come back and. they want you to come back. I said, I. can't I can't do that to y'all, >> right? >> To the guys that were there at the time. cuz all y'all had moved on as well. And. I was the last one left here. You know.

what I'm saying? All y'all was gone. From Ed to TD, everybody was gone. I was. the last one out of everybody that's. sitting there. >> And I said, you know what? >> I I did the best I could, right? >> And I said, it's a wrap. And my son was. like, "You sure?" I said, "Trust me, man. You know, physically and in your. heart, I can't do it at the level that I. need to do it because I'm not going to. go out there and embarrass myself and. I'm not going to get my teammates hurt.". >> Right. >> When you Yeah. I Well, I knew in 2002. and I had gone through like Ed I had. gone through so many surgeries on my.

right knee. That's the knee that my ACL. that I tore, you know, four years ago. >> And so, we were in training campus like. every day. I was going I was on that. list of going to the doctor, getting my. knee drained, get it drained, get it. drained. Then I'll have surgery there. Go get a little scope drain. Yeah. >> And so I that was my whole training. camp. And then it was one night it had I. went back to the to the dorm. I called. my agent. I told her, "Man, I'm done." I. said, "I can't do it no more." So that. the next day or two days later, we were. playing at the NerS in the preseason.

game. [clears throat] Yep. And so I was. like, "Listen, I got an opportunity just. to put pads on for the last time and. tell the fans thank you and just say. goodbye to Denver and do it like that.". And uh he was like, "Yeah, that I'll. call Mike up." So he called Mike. He he. called Mike and then Mike called me and. I told him Mike said, "You sure?" I. said, "Mike, I'm done." Like I just. can't do it. >> The sign Yeah. the knee just won't won't. cooperate. So. >> went out there the last time, man. It. was it was emotional, man. knowing that, you know, I I just walked out, had my. pads on, and just waved to the crowd, walked back into the locker, took the.

pads off, and uh that was it, man. That. was the last time I put pads on. Brother, >> when you know, boy, >> I would say it actually started after we. lost the championship game in '05. >> and Mike was like, I talked to Mike and. he was like, well, what you think? He. said, you think you want to make another. run at it? said, you know, we can bring. bring the same guys back and you know, we only a game away from going to the. Super Bowl. And when you lose a game of. that magnitude, you be like this year.

12. And I'm like, we were so close. Cuz. I thought that would have been it. Um, so. you go into 06, you said take all the. time you need. So I told him, okay, yeah, we can make another run at it. You. know, you one game away. You thinking. you get another year, you can make the. next step. And I said, "Who wouldn't. want to do the Elways, the Ray Lewis's, the bus, you know, have that walk off, you know, and walk off of the. championship that year.". >> But, um, I felt I was out there, but when you.

watch tape, those are plays that I used. to make. >> Yes. >> And I find myself a step slower and you. can't no longer make those plays. So, at. the end of that season, um, I talked to. Mike and I told him, "Yeah, that was. probably it." And he asked me about, "Well, had I ever thought about. coaching?" And I said, "No, not really.". I said, "You know, half the time I'm. just player, player, player.". >> Um, but he said, "Well, you know,

watching you overtime, I think you'll. make a hell of a coach." So, I thought. about it. He gave me the offseason off. So, that's when I just made the. transition into coaching. But when you. making plays that you used to make with. your eyes closed and you can no longer. make those plays. >> and then the off seasonason will come. and you don't feel the urge to want to. go work out. >> anymore. >> because everything you do in the. offseason prepares you for the end. season.

>> Um not wanting to go do that let me know. that it was time. Um, so I felt that, you know, I sat my wife and them down. and I told him what, you know, Coach. Shanahan had presented to me and I said, you know, this is probably it. You know, I'm not going to play football no more. And the kids, you know, they didn't. really understand the magnitude of it. My wife understood cuz she like, okay, well, shoot, you coming home, not. knowing the hours that I'm going to be. working, coaching. Yeah. >> So, making that transition was another.

part of her sacrificing for the family. So, um, I was able to make that. transition. But that's when you know, um, like I said, you see yourself, but. you see a shell of yourself on tape. knowing that you can no longer make. those plays. And it was no need for me. to try to go get another year and put. your body through it. So, that was it. for me. >> Mo, you didn't really Mo, you ain't. really have no serious injuries. >> That's That's what got me out the. league. >> Really? >> Yeah. >> With your neck. >> Neck. >> The neck. >> Yeah. >> I had big old Jamal. I thought I was.

bracing for him on the one-on-one, but I. didn't know Trev was coming from behind. him. And I had Kelly Hearn coming from. this side, >> right? >> So, I was bracing to tackle him. >> My bad knee that TD was talking about. I. had to get drained before every game and. buckled on me, >> right? >> And all of a sudden, I came down like. this and I was bracing for him. I wasn't. expecting Trev and Kelly to be coming. behind him, right? >> So, that impact uh severed my C4 and C5. >> But even after that, I still thought I. could play, right? So, I went and got. four and five uh opinions from different.

doctors. I was still trying to make a. comeback. If it wasn't for my wife and. family, I would have. >> You have tried it. >> I would have tried it. But all the. doctors shut it down. >> Yeah. I'm going to ask y'all this cuz. people always ask if we were to ask your. teammates, what were you like when you. played compared to [clears throat] what. you are now? Ed, what you see now, having played with me and your having. played with me and what you see now, how. different am I now to what I was then? You're the exact same person. [laughter].

>> I mean, how cool was this? We had this. in the locker room. >> Yeah. >> Like, so there were we were talking. about the sacrifices. Look, I love going. home to my to Lisa and the boys and so I. did that a lot and I sacrificed going. out after practice, but I cherished like. the five minute water break or before. practice or before we went out for the. walkthrough or a little bit after. practice. Like I cherish those moments. You guys were thoroughly entertaining. You were thoroughly entertaining and. you're still doing it today. [laughter]. >> Water, you water, you've known me the.

longest cuz uh like I said, I got I got. here at 90. You were already here. >> How different the guy that you saw come. in. Couldn't remember the plays. >> Yeah. >> Turned himself into I was a special. teams guy. Got moved to the offense. Made a name for myself offensively. Made. you and I on the all the ' 90s all. decade team. Went to We're in the Ring. of Honor together. We're in the Hall of. Fame together. How different am I the. very first time that you met me into. what you see now on tell everybody see. on television the podcast? >> Well, you're much more polished speaker.

>> Yeah. [laughter]. Uh I like your teeth [laughter] good. Looking good. >> Hey Mary Jane the Mary James [laughter]. got me. boy have you looking like a jackal. But. what I can say though, I'm I'm I'm like. Eddie, you still are the same in that. you still are dedicated to your craft. >> Yeah. >> And you was like that in football. You.

You were. inspiring to those many people probably. didn't tell you that, right? >> But they would see you work and be like, "Damn, >> so I was working like that.". >> Y. >> I got to get I got to get it in, too. So, uh, and what you're doing now, man, I I think I told you this a little. earlier today, man. The the way that you. communicate, it's it's outstanding. Terrell is like that, too. Both, you. know, quite a few of you guys, man. But. your communication is is is amazing, man. And, uh, you know, we're we're all. so proud of you and, you know,

>> appreciate that. >> Um, you're still doing great things. So, you haven't changed a ton. >> Appreciate it, [laughter] Romo. Cuz cuz. me and Romo probably faced each other. cuz he was the linebacker, he was the. Sam backer. We went against each other. uh uh some water cuz like when we did. oneonone I mainly uh uh went against the. wide receivers especially once Mike got. here. There were a couple of times like. when Wade was here we would do some. safety uh safeties would work against. the tight ends. So Romo different how. how different am I now than what I was. then? >> Oh you're the you're the same.

[laughter]. You're the same. You know I would say. this. You know, you and I had a little. little thing because of my Oakland. thing. And you know, you felt like I. could run full speed trying to cover you. and think I could wrap your arm and land. on you and I wish I could do that, [laughter]. you know, but definitely couldn't. But,

uh, you know, one thing about men is you. can have a difference. You can have a. challenge. >> and and you can talk it out and be good. >> And that's the one thing I respect. ON LIVE AND TEXTING me back. >> But here's here's one thing you know for. me because like I y'all heard the story. His lock was in front of mine. I tried. to mimic everything I saw him doing.

because he went from nothing to making. himself the Hulk and he was a household. name and it's like in this business it's. hard to find that angle whatever the. angle is. Well, he was my angle. So even. to this day now he know if he touched. down in Denver where where you at? Where. you where you need me to be? >> I drop any and everything to go get any. of Crockett knows Crockett here. Whatever they need any one of you guys, dude. Anytime you ask Steve when he. didn't live here, where you at? Where.

where you want where you want me to be? Where you want me to go? Where we going. to eat? I'm not letting you buy cuz. that's my way of giving back to him. because how much I wouldn't be sitting. here if he wasn't where he was. >> and giving me the example. You know what. I'm saying? So, I take those stories, I. laugh at all the crazy [ __ ] still 30. years later, and I try to pass some of. that on to my kids, you know? So, you. you've been so important to me. I I. couldn't have made it without having. that example. So, I appreciate that. >> You you you're the same, man. People.

always ask me how [laughter] how you. know was Sharp like that in the locker. room. I say, "Yep, exactly like that.". And what I appreciate most, man, is that. >> you transition into that space where. typically people have to change. >> like you're not, you know, you have to. change sort of like how you talk, what. you wear on set. You know, I've been in. that business for 20 years, man. And. then you got to come in there with a. certain, you know, image that that that. the the execs want you to have, >> right? >> And you said, "F that. >> You became. [laughter].

like and and so and it's not new to us. and we watch it. I watch the show and. I'm like, "Dude, that's what we've been. watching." I said, "You guys have to. understand that this dude was the energy. to our locker room." And when you left, I mean, it just a huge void. It just. like. >> left the door. And so, no man, I I I. love what you're doing, man. You keep. doing what you're doing, brother. You. know, you and I, we go way back and. >> keep being you, [laughter]. >> cuz that's what cuz that's what I tell. people. People like, "Man, you wasn't. like this in the locker room." I said,

"The only the only difference is I'm. more PG publicly now." But when I was in. a locker room, oh yeah, the story that. we I was telling then cuz cuz we went uh. in training camp and remember Saving. Private Ryan was out. I'm going to see. Saving Private Ryan. I said that ain't. what I'm going to do. [laughter]. That ain't that ain't what I'm going to. do. Uh I'm afraid to come to you last. Mo. So So what what is the difference? Uh cuz I'm sure people like cuz you Oh, you was on a Bronco, so you played with. Shannon Sharp. What What was he like?

>> I told him he's the same dude he is. He. been all the time. He is that today. >> Just an engaging uh personality. Very uh. just charismatic as the kids say. You. got the Reds. [laughter]. >> What's it called? >> The Reds. Okay. I'm out of the loop. >> Yeah. I mean, you haven't changed, man. And it's just, you know, I'm like Gordon. said, I'm proud to see you make it to. this level and do the things that you. do. Uh, you don't know how many times I. done seen you in the in the locker room, in the weight room, right, >> getting workouts in before practice,

after practice, >> and it was just like there's no way I. can slack off, you know? So, I had to be. on my P's and Q's and do everything I. could to be at my best uh just to keep. up with you cuz uh you were definitely. uh somebody to be admired through your. whole career. >> and even now. I mean, >> appreciate that. >> Definitely. >> Well, we spent the most time together in. Denver. Uh even when I went away to. Baltimore, we stayed in contact. We. still we talk every day. I mean, we.

still still talk at least at bare. minimum once a week. Uh you probably. know me better than than anybody. Um. because of what everything that we've. been through um when I was uh when I was. here, if you uh this guy wasn't going out, I. wasn't going out, >> right? >> And you guys didn't go out unless I went. out, right? >> And so it was always it was always us. And the thing cuz I know when you was at. Tennessee State and all the time, all.

the different places you're at Howard. now coaching, I know they asked because. then once they found out you that you. were my best friend, they was like, "Man, what's he really like? Is he. really is that really his persona? Is he. really like that? Is he really. quickwitted like that? Is he like X Y. and Z? [laughter]. Um, from from a friend perspective, um, like I said, I learned I ain't going to. get choked up or nothing, but I learned. so much from you. >> I mean, for for somebody me and Rod, we.

talk about it all the time. For somebody. to personally, as a professional, as a. pro, Atwater did it. He didn't know, but. we watched him from afar. >> Yeah. >> But you literally took me under your. wing. Like I said, it was the eye thing. I don't know cuz I always saw you give. away a lot of stuff in the locker room. People always ran to your locker and you. just gave it to them. But the one time. that you needed somebody to bring you. some Wendy's, >> like I said, I don't know how you got my.

number, you called, brought my daughter. over there. Come to find out, long story. short, we got so much in common. You. being a seventh round draft pick, me. being a seventh round draft pick, and. all we wanted to do was work. >> Yep. >> You showed me that. work was going to pay off. Um, you used. to tell me about the Tuesday workouts. You better bring your ass over here. because you know what they doing? They. got triyouts. >> Yeah. >> So, if your ass ain't over here, that. mean whoever they working out, if they.

think that they better than you, they. going to replace your ass. >> Yep. >> So, those are the type of things that. you put in front of me and showed me how. to be a pro. So when people ask, you. know, oh man, shop, you know, he. mentioned your name, you say y best. friends. You really know him like that. I'm like, yes. Say, well, how is he? I. said, he is what you see. And uh the. reason I say that is because. you're very genuine. Um very. cherishable.

never. ever wanted anything from me, but you. taught me so much about not only being a. professional in the NFL, but a. professional in life, you know, and like. I said, because our friendship has gone. past 30 years now, which is crazy. Um, we talk all the time and shoot, you. know, whether I got a new dog or my dog. just died. You know, we done been. through those phases. Um, but I tell.

people, you're everything. that you see. >> and more because they don't see the. genuine side. They don't see the. generous side of you. You do a lot of. things that your name is never on. They. don't know that about you. Um, we talk. about it all the time. Um, and. there's not one person as a professional. that I could ever say. you treated me like I was your little. brother. And I've always respected you.

for that because you could have. befriended anybody on the team. Why you. chose me, I don't know. [laughter] But. we had so much in common. And the way. you are to see this. is crazy to me because this is my first. time being here. [laughter]. But knowing where that originated from, >> y. >> we've come so far and to see the growth. not in not only in you and your second.

career, >> right? >> You know, now I can actually give you. your flowers and let you know I am very. very proud of you. Yeah. >> The way you conduct yourself, the way. you handle yourself, the way you go. about business. Um, it's always been there. >> Mhm. >> Um, but now the world is actually. getting to see cuz everybody knows. >> but you got a heart of gold. And like I. said, there's nothing that you would not. do for anyone, but to now see it up. close and in person, it's amazing.
