We'll figure out, you know, how get a. house." Her hus says, "Hold up, hold up,

hold up. When you when you when you when. you going to marry my niece?" I said, "Excuse me?" I said, "When you going to. marry my niece? It's been too long. You've been dating her. You just been. having her around. have a run around, chase you on the world. And I'm just. like, excuse. I don't understand her. What she's saying is you're just going. to have my daughter, my I mean my my. niece, my niece following you around, chase you around the world. And I. started laughing cuz ain't Penny is. serious. She reminded me of my Linda. She was not playing. You know what I. mean? She the she the one that tell my. wife, "Go cook for your husband. Go. cook. Your husband don't need to go out. to eat. You go in the kitchen and cook.".

So she's talking to that and I'm like, "Auntie, we've been married 9 years. What? You've been married?" And never. heard another peep out of it. satisfied. her enough to know that I had validated. her niece through through marrying her. And that's my girl hit me there at 2 in. the morning just to ask me how I'm. doing. Is my wife acting right. >> But Mike, you said you knew she was the. one after two weeks. >> Two weeks, Mike. >> Two weeks, man. It was a It was a nur. She was a nurse in school, but it was a. nurse. It was a nurse that lived in the. back of her apartment. It's the first.

I said, "Damn, she live. in the same apartment." I just drove all. the way back to the girl house. and inconsiderate. I thought too much of. myself and I like whatever. Shut up. and. and I and I pushed on, but I saw her. some months later at at a at a event at. Big Boy's house where the old Boom Boom. Room was. And I saw her walk in and she. was with um man, shouts out to to her. friends, her guy friends who didn't. hate. Shouts out to them. Um but she. walked in and I just I was struck. I was. knocked off my feet. She was I mean I. mean she was she had beautiful skin. glowing. She had freckles. She had been. born a natural red head. I didn't know. then. her her hair was this off color.

and she had a quirkiness about how she. looked and just exotic to me. I was just. like, man, I got to talk to this. I. remembered her, but I was like, man, I. got to talk to this girl. And um she she. she saw me and instantly remembered me. and hated me and thought I was arrogant. and full of myself and and um. >> thought you didn't change at all. >> Yeah. But but but the PD of the station, man, was a was a true friend and that he. encouraged her to give me a shot. You. know what I mean? And camouflage, God. bless the dead, had died and he was a. common connector. She was a friend of. his. He was loosely related to me and um.

she she told me she had an obituary for. me and upon trying to get out of there. cuz there was another girl in the party. that I had been with biblically and I. had to get out of there that now cuz I. was like if this girl sees me talking to. her this girl is going to hate. I was. like I can't have a hate. Like I denied. knowing this girl another 10 years cuz. the girl had told Shay, oh yeah I know. Mike. I was like I don't know what in. the hell she talking about 10 years I. held that lie. I'm like nope I do not. know this woman. You know what I mean? cuz I wanted my chances to stay alive. with her. But when I was leaving, she. spoke to me and I told her, I said, "Man, you need to take me out to.

dinner." And uh you know, she again, she. thought I was arrogant and full of. myself, but I ended up taking her to. dinner. But I thought she was just. amazing. >> Wow. That that's that's an unbelievable. story. >> She's in the building, the girl that you. see, and she lived in the back of the. building. Shay lives in the front of the. building. You see Shay, >> you're like, "Yeah, I I ain't going to. be able to see you no. >> I ain't going to be able to do it. I. ain't going to." Cuz I was just playing. We were having fun, but I was just like. this other girl, it was something about. her. I didn't know at the time she's a. Gemini. My sister when she first met her. said, "I didn't know if you was in love. with just program because she acted so. much like my grandmother in the way in.

the way that she treats human beings and. people." She was in nursing school. She. generally care about people. With that. said, there was a certain amount of. standoffishness about her. So, I just. wanted to know her more and she didn't. disappoint. It'd be 2 3 in the morning, me and my papers coming home with. strokers. We coming in, she'd get up in. the middle of the night, cook shrimp and. rice at Too Faced. She, you know, I. mean, she was, she was like a old lady. in a young fine. She looked like she was. supposed to be stripping, getting some. tips, but but she but she was she she. she acted like a old southern woman. And. I um I just I fell for it. And then when.

I realized how intelligent she was, I I. said, "I can't let I can't I can't let. these Atlanta negro get this. They ain't. going to know what they do. And they. going to do it. I'm going do it right.". >> Yeah. And I I can remember the moment. she was like she was going to go. waitress and Jazzy T. And I said, "God, I I went and thought I had to go think. >> you go you been the oldest spot.". >> Yeah. Yeah, I broke. Magic City Magic, >> all of them. But we were supposed to go. to uh we we used to go I used to take. her to Jazz to have have a good time and.

party and man, she said, "I'm going to. go I need some extra money. I'm going to. go, you know, waitress." I just thought. I thought I was like, "Man, >> damn." I said, "You let that happen? You. >> I said it's going to go crazy cuz I had. a girl in Jazzy Te. I said I said this. ain't going I was like I was like, "No, I got that little bill. Don't worry. about that. I got. say the average cost is somewhere. between $30 and $50,000. So by the time. the cake and the pictures and the DJ and. you get the building, how much do you. think is a is a good amount of money? Let's just say for the sake of argument, I don't know if you would do it the same. way over again or you would go back or. you'd have a traditional wedding. Maybe. she would want a traditional wedding. Let's just say Mike had a quarter bill. >> Yeah. >> How much would you spend on a wedding? >> If she wanted a traditional wedding, she. could have one. But I'll tell you, like. with with Shay, the way her mind work, she'd go, she'd say, "I'm going to take.

that money. I'm going to go put 20% down. on a property and develop something.". So, I would encourage young. African-Americans in particular, you. know, traditional wedding used to be in. your mama's or grandmama's backyard. Yeah. >> With with a very nice dress. So you. would give something for the dress and a. and a tuxedo of sorts or or just a suit, but you would put that money into. investing in something that's going to. grow over the next 10, 15 years. So you. know, you it's good when you married and. when you single to have mentors. We have. a group of marriage mentors and John. Hope Bryant and and his wife Shay. And.

John preaches to us, you know, you know, just economic integrity. Have some. integrity about don't do what you do. just for flash, just for show. So, we. would honestly, I would say before a. traditional marriage, we probably would. have invested in something. And that. that theory proves true because I. remember getting a $60,000 publishing. check or a royalty check for rap music. And um saying to Shay, you know, what. are we going to do with it? And she was. like, "Well, we should get a rental. property." And the first thing, that was. the first rental property we bought. And. we've grown our portfolio. You know, I.

could have afforded $150,000 Dodge Demon. or a Porsche. She was like, "No, we. should buy these apartments. You've been. saying you want apartments." since we. bought a part a set of apartments in the. bluff. So my wife like a old country. woman has constantly deferred our money. into investments. So maybe when I'm 60. 70 or something, she'll want a. traditional wedding and I give her one. Like my big mama and big daddy in. Tuskegee, we have wedding pictures of. them and they're adults. They grow. I. was so funny seeing my big mama in that. wig and that gold dress on, see my big. daddy dress cuz I only ever seen them in. overalls. But when they could have done.

a traditional wedding, they bought 40, they bought just under 40 acres in. Tuskegee, Alabama. We still own that. land to this day. And both of their. names is on that deed. It not just my. great-grandfather's NH Blackman is. Chisella Mackey Blackman, too. So for me. and her, we probably would, you give us. $ 35, $40,000, we just going to go find. another property to buy and invest in. >> Wow. >> And I would encourage young people to do. that. >> You said that you knew that that was. your soulmate. How different do you. believe your life would have been had. you not followed your instincts and say,

"That's my soulmate. Let me go.". >> Well, I think she's my twin flame. like. you know I I think more than I think we. the same flame just sparking different. kind of coming in. I've had a lot of. soulmates like you know my children's. mothers were at the time that they were. in my life I needed them you know I. needed encouragement they needed me. I've never fallen off from doing my job. in terms of co-parenting and being. there. So I've had a lot of people who. my soul matched with but there hadn't. been anyone that thought from the same. place I thought from that and moved in. the same way that I moved and they had. the same core values and beliefs in the. same way. So how would my life have been.

different? probably would have been more. of an addict. Probably would have. probably would have wasted more time. chasing impulse and and and compulsion. of [ __ ] Um, probably would have. made a lot more money, but squandered. it. You know what I'm saying? So, I'm. glad that I married her cuz I married. like my grandfather did a woman I can. bring my check home to and the proper. investment is going to get made. Now, the money I make on the weekend is mine. >> You can't tell me what to do for my. weekend money. But all that money that. come from that singing to dance on stage. that they get sent to her and they get.

it get taken care of. >> You are really an old soul. Yeah. Because I was around my grandfather. growing up and that's how he But all the. old men thought like that. They worked. Monday through Friday. When they got. that check on Friday, they come set that. check on the table. >> Go do what you want to do with that. Don't do what you going to do. >> That's how that that's that's how they. thought. >> Yeah. It's like Proverbs, what was it? Proverbs 31 and uh when it talks about. the type of woman you want to marry, woman that's going to be a conservative, woman that's going to be saved, woman. that's going to take her time to invest. and do things for herself, but it's for.

the benefit. You want that cuz you you. need a partner. You know what I'm. saying? You you have to have a partner. And you know, and for me, we have lost. the art of partnership in in our. opinion. Not even in our actual, but in. our opinion. See, it used to be you want. to break up with your girl and it be it. be like that saying in the good fellas. Your homie sitting around, you got to go. home. I know you like your little side. piece and everything and y'all y'all get. back to that. But you got to go home, right? You know, no matter what happens. And I think that we've lost that. philosophy, you know, in in our. community and and it's not good for us.

cuz you got to go home. You got to take. care of home. I mean, and if you really. got a good solid home, I I've seen some. old men in the country have two homes, you know, mess around, but both of them. homes be stable because one of them. women or both of them women two. different but they're teaching him to. stay in line, to stay and I think that. we need to get back to that as men, right? Sheay seems to allow you to be you. >> Yeah. >> How important is that in a marriage, in. a relationship that because a lot of. times you meet someone and you try to.

change the very person that you met? >> Yeah. Yeah. >> Sheay met you killer Mike how you are. but she've allowed you to be that. How. important is that in a relationship in a. marriage? >> There's some compromise. I I trim back. on some of my you know you know I mean I. have. But but with that said, being. allowed to be me is what's allowed us to. prosper and grow. And I appreciate that. And I encourage her to be her. I don't. want her to simply be Michael Render, Killer Mike's wife. I want She Bigger. I. want Shaina Ford Render to be the. biggest, best, most badass version of.

herself. When you see a project coming. like a development properties, we do. techie homes. We're partnered in a. company called Techie Homes that's. building miniature neighborhoods for. people. Um, that man looked for me for. five, six years, couldn't find me. When. he finally found me, he met my business. partner, my life partner. He met Shay. and she was the business partner. She. went out on the construction site. She. walked the sites. She came back and say, "Hey, this is a good investment." So for. me, it was important because I knew I. married somebody who was my equal. If. I'm the tight end, man, I want to know. my old lineman doing their thing. And me. and Shay try to work in tandem like.

that. And and so I've always attempted. to live like that with women I've dated. or been with, but it didn't work cuz. they didn't have the proper. understanding. It didn't work cuz they. didn't have the proper faith. And I. don't mean that from a bad perspective. My youngest daughter Mikey, her bio mama. is like, "Hey man, I'm into this working. thing. That entrepreneur thing is too. shaky. I don't know, you know, I need. healthcare." And 9 to5 and her and Shay. have an amazing relationship that's. benefited my daughter because Muff is. going to go to work. Muffy's going to. take care of Fton County taking care of. Shay's going to work on these.

developments. She's going to take some. high risk, but they both pour into my. daughter. And now that my daughter's a. freshman at Hampton University, those. rewards are pouring back. So her letting. me be me allowed a big mixed family. You. know, you come to our house on. Thanksgiving and literally everybody is. there. The kids there, they mama's. there, they mama's sisters and brothers. there, you know, friends and family that. may not have friends, family there, but. everybody's welcome. And that's what I. needed that because in order for me to. be the type of Michael I am, a kid. raised by his grandparents, raised in. between parents and we didn't say.

stepparents, but these bonus parents and. all these cousins and stuff, you know, we were in Atlanta, but we live like we. was in the country. All 10 of my niece, all 10 of my cousins, we were all on. that living room floor together on. pallets. Nobody want to sleep next to me. cuz I peed in the bed. So So it was. >> they don't know about them palace. though. >> All them pallets the best thing going, man. If it wasn't though, if it wasn't. for me marrying her, I probably would. have had a far more disruptive life. So, I'm appreciative for her for for having. the trust in me that I could do it and. encouraging me when I thought I. couldn't.

>> All the places that you mentioned, Strokers and Blue Flame, had the TE, you. go to Dugans and she seems like, okay, you can do that, but you take her with. you. >> Yeah. Well, if you got a wife who finds. a stripper, you want the stripper to. seal her. and and we get half off on our dancing. I got her with when I go to when I go to. Man City without Shay, man. My dance. would be $10 for real. I'm just like me. You charge me 10, Mike. You know it's. just the rules. I get there with Shay. They be like, "Girl, don't worry about. it. I ain't even worry about no dancing. night. I just want to hang with you." I. be like, >> you know what I mean? Just you ain't.

going to give me no break. I've been. spinning with you since my freshman. year. But but but they they like my. wife. A lot of them thought she used to. be a stripper. That was so funny. A. dancer. But we respect the girls. We. love the girls. We built cool. relationships. We a lot of those young. women in there aren't just dancing. They. own businesses. Shay shop with them a. lot for their hair businesses, their. clothing businesses. She's encouraged. them to get real estate license. Um, shouts out to our girl D who went on to. get her her um her nursing practitioner. I mean, she's a nurse. Um, she was a. practitioner when we met her. I think. she's a full-on nurse now. It was just. So, you get to see these success.

stories, too. And I'm just I'm I'm damn. proud that when I go to the club, if I'm. with my wife, I get a discount. You. know, >> Mike, how hard is it to remain. monogamous when you're married? >> How hard is I? I don't know. So, I done. had too much fun at the girl spot one. time and I got out of there, man. I got. a call. Hey, man. Maybe you should come. back, man. We should run around, too. I. was like, well, I am trying to get some. cardio in. I lose weight. And man, I got. a call when I got in the door. Say, man, you going to bring your ass out that. girl house right now? They got a nice strip club. there. So I'm like, "Let's go to the. strip club." And the guys wanted, oh, you know, it turned into a it turned. into a slave plantation when you saying. Harriet come. So, so, so what I've realized is Shay. and I have have a non-traditional. marriage in that it that I have the. ability to speak my mind. Even if I. can't act on every impulse and thought, I can say to my wife, man, I find that. girl attractive. I can I can she'll. nudge me. I'm just like, man, look at. the ass on that one. times they didn't do right in terms of. taking that advice. Now that my sisters. are adults, they know one another. They. talk, they congregate, and they all love. their brother and their brother, all. love them. And I wanted my children to. have that faster. My children have me on. the text chain, and they got a whole. another text chain without me about me. Because even if you don't have the same. bio, mother, and father, biologically, y'all are 50%. I remember going to the property. We. bought it from a black woman. So I I tend. to trust that that God has favor and. grace on us. And if we'll give oursel.

Chattahuchi Brick like my grandfather. These men often times the the things. they would buy like my grandfather never. sold his original house. So we always. had a rental property. That rental. property is what allowed him to get a RV. which allowed him to take us on vacation. from Lake Waka to Tampa Clear Water St. Pete. We got to go all these places. because my grandfather made a sound. investment. My grandfather, you know, they had a little stock option here. there penny stocks. He would buy stuff. for us. My grandmother was an investor. You know, she was a grow your own food. You don't have to get everything from. the store. So when me and Shay have an.

idea, she usually is a better researcher. than me. I do things off gut instinct. You know, it's like I remember buying my. first barber shop. properties is one thing, but when you. get into development, and she stepped. into development. Bankad Seafood is a. restaurant that Ti and I bought from a. lady named Helen Hart. It was a hole in. the wall. great fried fish, great. shrimp, and the world's best hush puppy. When we reopened that that business, it. opened as a sitdown restaurant. Um, we've having some repairs done on it. now. We're reopening in a matter of. weeks, which I'm very proud about. But. if it wasn't for Shay and Crystal. Peterson, thinking big, it wouldn't have. been developed like that. But she only. could think that big because she's up at.

night watching YouTube, reading. literature, learning. She's being. mentored by people like Booker T, by. people like John O'Brien. She is in a. constant state of learning. And that's. what I trust more than just, okay, I. know she did a couple times or she had a. real estate license or was trying to get. it. I trust the fact that she's. researched with me. your product. You don't have to wait. So, I appreciate Tony for that advice. because it put me on a two and a half. year campaign to develop and research. our own. We developed and research our. own. We got some of the best products on. the market now they're going to be. rolling out and it's only because I've. learned good research habits from my. wife. >> What are some of the keys to running a. successful business? >> Oh man, I haven't been successful in all. of them. So learn your lessons and from. your failures. >> cuz for the dubs you got to take some. too topheavy on salary at first. >> So rather than keep going and keep. chugging along, we said stop. We put a. freeze on it. We said we got some. infrastructure things we need to fix for. pipe one late. Let's fix that. Let's put. a freeze on let's put a freeze on. spending money. Let's re let's. reconfigurate how we do business and. when we reopen we'll be a much more. streamlined business. Much more. effective. But it took me and tip not. having ego. Our egos had to be put to. the side and me and my friend had to. come to the table and talk and say, "Well, how are we going to fix this?". And I I've been to a couple other. restaurants and this is what I thought.

with this. The first time I thought. about doing it, I just thought about. white labeling. The first time I got. some product back, I'm saying, "This. isn't good product. Let me develop my. own thing." So, you're going to have to. be willing to eat some losses before you. get a win. And you're going to have to. learn from them. And then I've been. reading Charlie Munger, man, is his. quotes, his books, and things of that. nature. And Charlie has a real good. thing to saying big big part of. succeeding is just to keep yourself from. doing stupid things. Like you know. sometimes this ain't this ain't a. winning play. So why run it? Don't run. the play if it's not a winner. Try to. avoid the stupidity that's already in.

you. And that way even if your. intelligence don't save you, your non. stupidness will. So I've I've tried to. do a good job in growing up in business. and learning from my mistakes early. You. got to know when to cut the rope early. You know what I mean? When it's too much. weight to let it go. And you got to do. things you're naturally passionate. about. L loves mecow, my rap partner. So. when it came time to develop an alcohol, I'm not much of an alcohol drinker. I I. like marijuana. I leaned on his. expertise of mascow. I leaned on what he. thought. And then when it came time to. will align it like this, well, just. every average person when it came time.

for me to taste it, I'm like, "Oh, I. like this." We understood that together. we had put together something. >> You got a marijuana line coming up? >> I did and I didn't like it. I I like um. I I didn't hate it, but I didn't like. the marijuana business from a corporate. structure. I believe marijuana should be. ran by the people who put their time in. federal prison. Crystal for putting it together. We've. now brought on a woman named Shanica who. um who has ran four four five um. restaurants and clubs. She helped us.

money to it. It's bosses be broke. You. know, it can get like that. But to have. a woman that you have invested in and. that has made the proper investments. with your investment, when I bought her. her grandmother's house that she grew up. in, she didn't just take that house and. try to flip that house. She put that. house together, put that house up as a. as a house for rent. So at the end of. the year, no matter what happened, she. know she had these many thousands of. dollars off that rent. When I bought a. house off one of my comedian homeboys. and he taught me about pads split and we. started using pads split, I don't ask. her about that money. I just know, man,

it's been times I've been tight and I. needed 50, 60, $70,000. And she said, "Well, should I get it?" I'm just like, "Where you get it? You got another. husband?". And um and she said, "No, [ __ ] You. bought me them two houses and this is. this what I saved off this. just make. sure you pay me back. And I get out. there, sing and dance. got repoled and um it was it was under. um Mikey's mom's name and it broke my. heart because it was under somebody. else's name and I could have did it. under my name. You know what I'm saying? And I deeply. appreciate her for being patient with. me. But the broker I ever been, man, was, you know, I I man, I remember. paying I remember I remember paying. child support and then getting a child. support order the next week. I literally. paid 900 bucks to the next week. whatsoever, we going to hit you with a. child support order anyway. You you. know, and I but but I but I for two. years I was on my ass. And if it hadn't. been for the encouragement for Shay, if. it hadn't been for people like TD. booking me on the Chitlin circuit, if it. hadn't been for for me getting with SMC.

Records at the time and my manager was. currently working with him at the time, now my manager works with me. If it. hadn't been for all these people. believing in me, Gut Master DJ Swift, Outcast DJ, giving me a price to record. at a discounted rate. I wouldn't have. been able to to do I pledge allegiance. to the grind as a series. That was meant. I pledge allegiance. The grind meant. getting rich independently. And I had to. do that. I had to I had to understand. the record business from the trunk up. from digging out my trunk having fat. beats hit me and say this is how many. you sold this month because that way I.

put a value on money that I didn't have. before. You know what I mean? So the. brokers I ever been I I didn't have. transportation and I was famous. The. brokers I ever been is I couldn't afford. a $5 dance in this flame. Girls just. gave me dance on charity and say it's. going to be all right big dog. You know. >> you done spit enough. I just. spoke at Tuskegee um you know a few. weeks ago and I got a chance to see the. bricks and see the thumbrints in them. and I want to remind people that you. know our young men if they aren't going. to go to college they need to be going. to seek trade. So I said something. publicly I said if a young man you know. between say let's say ages 14 24 is to. get a girl pregnant that girl is going. to receive wick or some type of. government underwriting or funding. I. said, "Let's make it so that the boys. don't owe that first two years back.".

Now, people tried to make it like. interpreted like, "You want to take. girls um you know, the government. assistance they get." I'm like, "No, dummy. I would like to add I would like. to say if the girls are going to get. this government assistant, let's require. it that the boys have to go to some type. of trade school, too." So within that 18. to 24 months while she's being assisted. by government and this child is being. allowed to be nurtured in terms of food, clothing, shelter, let's make it so that. these little boys have a place to go get. educated because what we need is. educated fathers along with these.

educated mothers. Our girls are going to. school that post high school they going. to school. I don't care if it's to be a. nurse tech or to be a full-on doctor. They're going to school our girls still. understand the power of education. We. need to make so the United States. government underwrite our boys that. first whether it's be 18 months or 24. months. You got to go get a trade, young. man. And if you get this trade, then we. not gonna charge you back them two. years, that first two years, >> because they gonna get their money now. >> They're gonna get their money, but if. you got But if you got, you know, my my. friend, I remember he he got his. passport. He could have went through the. roof, but that was after years of being. a dad and having to go through the court.

system and not being allowed to travel. So, I want to see us as a people, whether y'all married or not. I like it. So, if you get married and you get a. trade, you get a bonus, you get a lower. interest loan on whatever you want a. house. But I think that as black people, we're going to have to sit down with one. another outside of government and. government resources. And we going to. have to come up with some new terms and. conditions for what to do once these. babies get pregnant. Cuz it's both. pregnant, the the boy and the girl, these families going to have to start. getting together and say, "Well, what's. the plan for them so that we don't do it. again with the next generation and we. get to stabilize?" Cuz had it not been. for my grandparents, had it not been for.

your grandparents, we wouldn't have. opportunity to create what people, you. know, the catch word generational. wealth, right? Which is really just the. ability to take care of yourself post my. pardon. plus. So, I was like, "Okay, I got you. this is really a partnership. But it but. I'll tell you a time that I understood. how important her mind was to me. And. that was when my attorney and not my. attorney, my accountant called me and. said, "Hey man, um I don't know if. Shay's getting ready to divorce you or. but I mean she's taking out like 80. grand." And I'm just like 80 grand. I. mean, but she's done it several times. And I'm like he's a he's a small like. he's small Jewish guy, man. and he gets.

a little nervous and antsy and I'm just. like, "Robert, just just calm down, man." Um, I said, "I'll talk to her. I'll see what it's about." And she said, "That he talked too goddamn much. I was. trying to surprise you. I've been. developing these houses." And she had. developed a few of our properties that. were then on the market, of course, for. rent. And he was he was a he was a for a. while, for a few days around there. store and and buy that buy buy that [ __ ]. out. So, you know, we we land in London, she going to the mall. We land in LA, she going to the mall. But she is a. woman that that is constantly thinking. of ways to invest and turn a dollar and. I appreciate that about her. So, I've. trusted her and I appreciate her for. trusting me in terms of Michael because. Michael really was a gamble. Spending. half million dollars on money is not. what you should be doing. I I learned that once. you prove to the record company that I'm. willing to do it myself and I can do it, they're a lot more free flowing on the. other side with the budget because they.

know you've already took the gamble and. invested in yourself. They know how much. your investment based on the prior. investment, they know how much a return. they can expect on this investment. So, they're going to not only invest in you, they're going to invest in you and bump. you up some because they want to further. the investment. >> Wow. What I didn't know is the next day. my son would receive an emergency kidney. out of nowhere. Out of he has a rare. blood type. So out of no it was very he. had been bumped up on the kidney donor. list but we didn't know he had one. coming. So I was glad God has a plan and. go and and and God can remain anonymous. through what seems to be a series of. unfortunate events. So I'm sitting there. in the holding cell and I'm like man. ain't this some [ __ ] And the people. who love me cuz the cops were kind. enough to let me keep my phone were hit. me with encouragement. People like my.

mayor Dickens down in Atlanta, former. mayor Kesha Lance Bottoms, Cassin Reed. were hitting Mayor Karen Bass out in LA. Um. there's a policeman on night duty. I. forget his name. Mayberry or something. Um he he's telling them to bring him on. in. By the time they got me brought in, they had received 1500 phone calls like. on some Malcolm X [ __ ] Like they're. about to do a protest on your police. station. Like these people are coming. down here for Mike. I don't think you. guys know who you arrested. They had to. move me to another detainment center. It. scared them. So, but as I'm sitting.

there kind of by myself, I just start. thanking God and I just say, "Man, you. know, I appreciate you putting me in. this place of peace and quiet cuz. everything is so wild and disturbing. I. I I I knew I could win, but I didn't. know I was going to sweep. So, thank. you, Lord." I knew I could get back to. this mountaintop, but I didn't know it. was going to be on this album. out and it was like a movie. I saw I saw. Shay standing in the rain. I saw my. lawyer Elliot standing in the rain. Will. was in the car in the rain. It was just. like it was like the end of a movie. And. I thought that was the very end of the. movie that this beautiful romantic set. of me, this woman who I love, my lawyer, you know, the people who care about me. there. And then I woke up the next. morning after having because I still. went out and partyed. I still went out. and partyed with Tom Wy um and um and.

and and Ryan his son and and Tom Wally. who who discovered Tupac, right? He owns. um the parent company to long distance. company I partner with. Man, we still. went out and had a great time at I think. it was Peterson Auto Automotive Museum. and had had a great night. Oh man, it. was a great night. Jesus Christ. And uh. the next morning I woke up to a call. from Pony Boy's mom saying, "Hey, you. got to get back to Atlanta. You got to. get back now." And I was like, "What's. wrong? What's wrong?" She was like, "Pony's getting his kidney." She was. like, "He's getting a kidney." And that.

was truly the end of the movie for me. And um I just I just thank God even. harder. You know, I I thank God for. everybody that had been a part of making. that album with me, everybody that had. sat up at the studio with me to. encourage me, everybody that just gave. me Rico Way. God bless them. gone. Now I. remember Rico walking in the room way. Ray Murray saying you know. this album got to be as cohesive as the. chronic and it got to be southern and he. just left and I was like well that's a. hell of a thing to say to somebody. You.

know what I'm saying? I was like that. the chronic. You know what I'm saying? But we managed to do it and and and and. it was only because of the people that. believed in me. It was because of the. men and women that believed me. The. people that truly loved me that believed. in me. It was because of the. ex-girlfriends that believed in me. It. was because of my wife that believed in. me. It was because my kids believed in. me. If I wouldn't have had all that. belief poured into me, I don't know what. I would have done. So in that moment, that night, that night, that. troublesome, like I tell people, they. locked up a rapper. But when they let me. out, I was a folk hero. When we went to. the Waffle House, we got home, standing.

ovations. We went to Spondit, standing. ovation. When we went to everywhere we. went, it was standing ovations cuz the. city told me, "Man, we felt like we. won." And Dre and Big at. the time Dre had decided I'm going to. leave rap and I'm going to pursue. acting, pursue fashion that and and at. the time the crew felt and I and I and I. said the word abandoned, but there's no. malice on it. So shouts out to Future and I. really appreciate him and Dre cuz after. Dre gave me the record we had to figure. out how to make it a record. they had it and then No, I came in and. then DJ Paul came in and it just went. crazy. But I appreciate Future cuz I. know Future got a lot of [ __ ] to do, you. know. guys that that Reek had put together for. Second Generation were dope guys. So, I. never doubted him. But it was when I saw. him, he did a record, I'm forgetting who. was featured with, but the kid literally. chop Future out the video. Whoever was. doing it was chopping Future out. And as. a gun family, I got pissed. I'm like, man, that's how I got the y'all doing. this. You know, it was I think it was. racks on racks on racks. See, it might. have it might have been that. But I knew. then I was like, "Oh, they trying to. hold Shery back." Oh, Shery gonna do it. And the next thing you know, Shery did. it. I can't remember the other artist's. name. just saying that was the moment that I. knew when I seen another company try to. kind of excuse him or get him. I think at the core we all want the same. things but our pride in ego is a lot of. times. >> fuel is added to a fire because of the. people around us because of beefs and. stuff we don't have and my my hope for. is for them to take time to be mentored. by the black men and women that over the. last 60 years have shaped and formed. that community because what you don't. understand is a lot of time our behavior. is an embarrassment to them and it loses. them political equity and real equity. and money. Atlanta is Atlanta and it's a. special place. I feel like Atlanta. should be treated by black people like. Mecca is to Muslims, right? You have. economic opportunity thanks to Maynard. Jackson. You have economic opportunity.

on 10 and internationally because of. people like Andy Young. You have. economic opportunity because of Shirley. Franklin, Bill Campbell, Kesha Lance. Bombs, Cassim Reed, Mayor Dickens. You. have economic opportunity. your. reputation and the reputation you bring. that city could possibly ruin it if. you're too thuggish, you too ruggish, you're too outlandish, you're too you're. too bare bones minimum [ __ ] and. especially violence. Violence is not. good for money. Violence is not good for. bringing new hotels, for bringing new.

tours, bringing new conferences, bringing Super Bowl, FIFA, Major League. Baseball is not good. So when we as an. entertainment and athlete class, we have. two choices. We can take the low road. and do the typical [ __ ] and be the. top of the street. And we all know where. that ends up, jail or early funeral. Or. we could be the youngest and the mentees. of your business class and the social. class and say, "Hey, this is how we can. make this city better." We can take our. cues from the people in the streets. organizing. We can take our cues from. the people who in the who in the who in. those big suites organizing, making it. work. Like Andy built a dome with no.

public money. He was a pension plans out. of California. So he was able to build. our city and not have to overt tax you, out tax you. Kisha Lance Bottoms put a. furlow on anybody building that would. take the taxes up on legacy residents. These people have made the right. investments. So we need to consult with. the Kesha Lands Bottoms of Michael. Thurman. We need to say what can we do. to be better because if we don't we're. going to lose a city for our people that. generates so much money and so much. economic opportunity. And we don't. understand that because we used to. nobody paying us attention. We used to.

nobody caring about us. We we think that. because public school teachers didn't. pay attention to us like we want to, nobody else is. Well, the students. paying attention to you and we owe those. students an opportunity. So, I would say. in Atlanta, keep rapping, keep making. money, keep slamming basketballs, keep. scoring touchdowns, keep getting home. runs, but keep your ass in front of a. YouTube with John Hope Bryant. Keep your. ass in front of when Stokeley Carmichael. Tou spoke at UG. Go look at those old. tapes and you will understand we have a. greater responsibility than just the. flash of right now. We have a greater.

Magic Johnson. recently acquired that company. When I. asked Magic Johnson, "Why did you. acquire the life the Atlanta life. insurance company?" He said, "I saw this.

interview with Killer Mike." And that's. the unique thing about you as an. Atlanta. As an Atlanta, you get to live. your history. Your black history don't. just happen in February. Your black. history is happening every day. And your. black ass has a responsibility. And part. of that responsibility is to rise above. the streets. You got an opportunity to. rise above the streets and become. somebody because you have kids that are. coming after you, that look up to you, that admire you, and they need to know. that opportunity. Atlanta ain't been no. champion city cuz we got no funky ass. reality show programs of some been.

singing and dancing since 1990. This is. 124 years of excellence. You looking at. book T Washington um WB Dub boys had the. Atlanta conferences here in what 1904. 1905. Alonzo Hern had been there since. 1900. So you have a social. responsibility. John Wesley Dobs was the. mayor of black Atlanta before there was. a his grandson became the mayor of all. Atlanta. We have a responsibility. We. have that responsibility in Savannah. We. have that responsibility in Mon. We have. that responsibility in Athens, Augusta, and Columbus, too. And if we don't hold. true to our responsibilities, it's.

nobody fought, like Mr. John told me. down the street from my barber shop on. Edgewood Avenue. He said, "Hey, they. going to come along and tell you that. white folks bought this neighborhood up. in Jacifi and took it from us." And. that's a goddamn lie. He said the kids. thought they were better than all the. stores their parents owned and bought. and they sold it and they sold it for. too cheap. Atlanta, they got somewhere to sit your. ass down for a few years. >> And if you have a reputation, they've. been ruining each other's reputation in. politics so long, you don't think they. know how to ruin our reputation.

So, I. just want to tell the athletes and the. and the entertainers to take yourself. more seriously than the homies around. you take you, cuz they want you to be. the top of the streets. I believe the gang was I. refuse and he remember I remember. watching the news with Art sitting in a. hotel room as they busted these guys and. the guys were getting locked up and. everybody looked at Art, man, he a. snitch. He a rat. And um I saw Art Go. serve time and then I got a message in. my Facebook one time from a guy named. Art who said, "I need you to help me. help some young men." And I remember how. turned off I was about it at first like. man I you you the guy that sent the.

neighborhood. I remember how the big. homie felt about you, but I remember how. many big homies had used and abused us, had took advantage of paid us a dollar. on the on on $100 when we should have. been getting $10 on $100. And I thought. about what that man must have had to. went through and he got out of jail and. his job became helping and saving young. men. And I said, "Well, I owe him that. I got to do do something for him." So. art is do a favor for me. I saw art. change and evolve. You know, that's what. I saw. So I would just encourage them. brothers to change and evolve and show.

an example that we can get past whatever. >> whatever our differences are. >> Whatever that whatever our differences. are, we can get past them. And if we. choose to do that, see, when it when. America lands in Afghanistan, they get. the tribal leaders together and they. say, "Hey, now we need y'all to stop. doing so. We need y'all to come up with. a peace agreement." When we go into. other countries, that's the first thing. we do. If America really wanted gang. violence to end, Jeff Fort would be. free. Larry who would be would be free. They would have been free 30 years ago. and they would have been organizing. You. know, if America really wanted this shut. to stop, you know, there's somebody, man, right now in this city, I don't.

know if he's going to do jail time or. not. You know, his name was Big U. M. they got their brother they got their. brother locked up and they got him you. know some pretty serious charges but the. guy I saw. >> the guy I saw wasn't wasn't bullying. people me and Tip said they said well he. never never asked us anything never. forced our hands he never asked us for. anything but our presence in front of. the little boys that he was mentoring he. told me Mike you know money would flood. in when the violence is high. >> and when we get violence to come down. the money drives up. >> and then the money drives up goes to. police force and then it rises back up.

again then money comes back our way so a. lot of this is just a part of a system. that perpetuates it. So I just I'm. highly suspect of our people when they. get locked up. I'm highly suspect of a. system that has an incentive to keep us. in slavery cuz incarceration is slavery. And I would just encourage every young. man out there to do what Amina Matthews. and Gary Davis Gary Davis has the Next. Level Boys Academy um in Atlanta. Amina. Matthews is Jeff Ford's daughter and. they get young men together at a table.

and they moderate and mediate. conversations. So I get to say to you. this is what you did to offend me. I. believe the Jewish people, if there's. somebody Jewish in the room, let me. know. I is it Rasha Shana where you get. together and you ask each one another's. forgiveness and the person has the. option to to forgive or not forgive or. wait till the next year. We need to. develop systems like that in our. community. Well, we can sit down and. say, "Man, I know I did you wrong and. and and I'm asking that you forgive me. and give each other an opportunity to. give each other's grace because at the. end of the days, you know, most of us in. the Southeast are Christian of some sort.

and we follow this guy named Jesus. ultimate character. And when you look at. who was the last person that he saved. that he cared about was a prisoner, a. self-confessed thief, somebody that had. took something from somebody, somebody. that was loaded, somebody nobody cared. about. Christ gave that person grace. That's the person who went to sended to. heaven with him. So for me, I would just. say we need to learn to give each other. grace. We need to give ourselves some. grace. We need to be real leaders. amongst our crews and tell our crews, "Hey man, that beef we had that beef got. to go cuz nut dead. We don't need we. don't need another dead man. Troop dead. We don't need another dead man. We've.

lost too many good people. trouble dead. We don't need another dead man, you. know. So, we we need to figure out a way. to get at a table together to discuss, to forget, to forgive and then move on. in unity because it's better for our. people if we do. So in my mind, Jay-Z has. made business his art in in in some. capacity. So he wants to master that in. the same way he mastered Bars and Flows. I saw Magic Johnson come to Atlanta and.

I saw Starbucks want to get in Southwest. Atlanta and they did it with Magic. Johnson. I saw TGI Fridays get in. Southwest Atlanta with Magic Johnson. AMC theaters, getting there with Magic. Johnson, I saw Maggie Johnson completely. become a businessman by way of doing. business in Atlanta and then coming back. 30 years later now to own the Atlanta. Life Insurance Company. So for me, I. cheer for Ho in that capacity because. it's not only Ho. Nas has learned how to. become a business person. Big boy has. learned how to become a business person. Um my man um Chamilillionaire has. learned how to become a business person.

And there's nothing wrong with that. because when we lose that element, when. we lose these people, what we're losing. is people who will give other people. like us an opportunity. So I cheer for. Hope. I I would love another Hove album, but if you never give me another one, if. you just give me some guest verses, you know, we we we can live, but we want. I I would like to see him succeed more, not less. And I would like to see Kareem. succeed. And I would like to see Dame. succeed, right? And DM, you know what I. mean? I'd like to see Dallas and. It isn't as far as it could. be because there's something holding it. down. I just want to say to my brothers. and sisters in the south of the working. class, doesn't matter to me which color. you are. Doesn't matter to me who you. like in terms of a national figure.

speaking on social issues. I need you to. understand that the same people that. invented the word invented the word. cracker and they meant for you and. crackers to stay on the bottom because. there's a rich class in the south, there's what they call a planter class, a master class of people and they own. Georgia and Tennessee and the Carolinas. and Florida and Mississippi all up. through Arkansas. They own it and they. rule it with an iron fist. And if we. don't start to understand, more like. Fred Hampton understood, that we truly. need a rainbow coalition of workers. pushing forward in this country on each.

other's behalf, then we're going to stay. separate. We're going to stay unequal, and we're all going to stay without. >> How have they been able to convince. one group. to vote against their own best interest. >> and to look down on the other group. >> Yeah. >> When you're in the same boat. Again, I. believe in being able to brew your own. whiskey. I don't think you should have. to have a tax stamp on your whiskey. So, when I when I hear about somebody like.

Popey Sutton, you know, was a was a. white man who was a bootleger up in. Tennessee rather than serve federal. time. He killed himself. He said, "I'm. not going to do it. I'm not going to bow. to these oligarchs." He becomes a hero. of mine in the same way that John Brown. is a hero of mine. So for me I think. that we need to look outside of our own. culture, our own race, our own class for. other people that we admire and that we. agree with too because that way you know. the possibility of better is in other. people as well and you start to form. union. You start to form collaboration. You start to form coalitions in which.

the best interest of everyone is served. And I believe in particular in the. working class in the south that we have. a duty and an obligation to just like we. work in fields to have an opportunity to. work other things that will work better. for all of us. >> Do you always feel like this because you. caught a lot of criticism because you. went and sat down with a deal. >> No, no. I sat down with Kemp, Governor. Kemp. >> Governor Kemp and and you got a lot of. like man, Mike, why you sitting down. with him? He's my governor. and you say,

And. and when you see when he passed the um. when he re reinstated the Hope. city council, whether it's your county. commissioner, whether it's your mayor, whether it's your governor, your. congressman or senators, you better make. sure you do that because what you don't. want to be is without voice. So, a lot. of people that criticize me, they aren't. even Georgians. If you don't aging. about you a minority where you live at, >> right? >> Yeah. It's no goddamn minority. We make. up 35% of the state in Georgia. We make. up um just under 50% in Atlanta. What am. I going to listen to you for? Not going. to listen. You don't even know what it. feels like to be a majority. You don't. know what it is to see a black city.

council. You don't know what it is to. only have known black mayor. You got so. goddamn happy about Obama, you could. have peed yourself. I grew. up in these where these workingass. people 900 foot houses grew up white. with the Russells who were the biggest. black developers in the nation at the. time. That's who I grew up with. I grew. up with the people that built the full. county stadium in the dome. So [ __ ]. you can't tell me nothing impossible cuz. I could ride my bike three streets back. and see a black house with an indoor. pool, tennis court, and basketball. court. So the [ __ ] you going to tell me, [ __ ] You talking out your imagination. I'm talking about some [ __ ] I've seen. for real. You know what I mean? So I.

should be a heavy investment in terms of. making sure that that class of people is. brought up because when African-American. economy and community is doing better, this whole country does better. I would. make um a pathway toward legal. citizenship easier. I would create um. bilingual classes very early so that we. can communicate to one another. I would. return trades to high schools on the. federal level. I would support that. I. would guarantee trades programs in high. schools. I also would guarantee at. minority businesses um construction like. the um the Ali construction company down.

in um Georgia that they could get more. federal grants. These are the the. construction company I'm telling you. about now is the one who build all the. furniture in the Delta VIP lounges, black company. I would make sure that we. have a vested interest. I would make. sure that public school returns to the. greatness of what public schools was in. the 30s, 40s and 50s. Meaning physical. education is important. Artistic and. music education important and your. reading, writing and arithmetic is. important. I try to say why were we so. effective in public education even on. through college in the 50s and 60s and. where did we fill off from? I would take.

debt out of college. I would forgive all. college debt. I would make state schools. more open to state kids again. Um I. would start to support older people in a. way that they would be engaged. I would. make the retirement um age earlier. instead of later. And those that did. have that had didn't have the option of. retiring, I would give them some type of. government subsidized job where they can. help whether it be voting booths or. librarians or something. So those are. some of the things I would do because I. think when you have a society that can. take care of themselves, that can make. money and turn a dollar, it creates a. more effective society than not.

She said, "I'm sorry.". And we rolled there and the guy. instructed us we had to walk up. And. when she got up the hill, she looked at. me and she looked past me and she seen. something. And when she died on. me, it hit me that my mother at 16 years. old made a decision like the woman in. the parable of Solomon when they came. before two women said, "This is my.

child." And Solomon said, "Well, cut. them in half and give each half." And. the one who was really the mother said, "No, >> no, >> I give this child to you because it'll. be better raised." And that's when I. realized, man, I'm so blessed. I'm so. blessed. My my my grandmother was such a. good mother to me. She was such an. impression that I had I I found a woman. and married a woman that was just like. her. She was her and my grandfather gave. the second half of their life up to. raise me. So you compliment my.

intelligence. You complimenting them. You compliment an illiterate man from. Edon, Georgia who would sit me in his. lap and say, "Read to me."
