I. did an audition and then I went to uh. >> I went to uh LA to do the audition. >> Okay. >> And then I was on the road. I went back. on the road. I had to go to Portland the. next day. I got a car back to go do the. uh the screen test with Kevin. So, I had. to leave the road. >> for a day, go to LA, >> and then get to the uh I get to the. hotel. >> It's I mean real celebrities, real stars. in the waiting room. You know what I'm.

saying? Like waiting to do the first of. all, when I get there, I'm thinking to. myself, "Oh, these real actors.". >> Yeah. >> I ain't this ain't for me. [laughter]. >> I ain't going to get in that like this. You feel what I'm saying? And I'm the. funny thing is like I mean I'm in that. like real celebrities like I mean I. would say like Dusk was there and then. and then um then a couple of people was. there. I remember everybody was coming. up to Drew saying what's up to him and. stuff and everybody was coming to other. people saying what's up to them. >> Ain't nobody say nothing to you. >> One dude came up and I was like hell. yeah finally. Like somebody finally. recognized me and he was like hey bro.

you know where the bathroom is. [laughter]. >> And I said god damn bro. But then we uh. I go into the thing and then you know I. do the screen test with Kevin and it's. like that's a dream come true like to be. as a comic. I mean that's a. >> everybody ask me all the time like who. would you want to work with and like. your life and I said Kevin from the from. the very beginning and to be able to. knock it out in the first movie is like. a true. >> Was this your first was this your first. screen test? Was this your first read? >> That was my uh I did one screen test.

with I did I did a screen test with uh. Marcelo at first. Okay. And then that. was that went that went decent. But then. I realized like. >> everybody in I'm telling you everybody. there was like real actors dog. Like. they really knew what they was doing. And so I ain't never really like. >> I do stand up like for real. >> but I ain't never get into acting but. back then. So I was just so like. >> so like just lost for real. >> You feel me? [laughter]. >> Yes. So what was your number one memory? Okay. You get you you do the uh screen. test with Kev and so now they call you. back and say you got the part.

>> Yeah. So, what was what was that what. was that moment like? You like, damn, I'm just a stand up. I mean, I've been. doing stand up and now I'm about to do a. a for real for real movie. I remember I called my pops. I told him. about it and then I called my mom and. stuff. I mean, it was like it was. surreal, but also like, man, you know, you put in the work and it's like, you. know, this we working for, you feel me? >> And so, it got to a point where it's. like, now it's just. >> time to just keep going. >> It's it's just. >> now we just now we starting for real. Like, now that now we really getting. started, >> you know? So when you started when you.

started and and and we're going to get. to your standup career, but when you. started was that the natural transition. because you see so many you see Eddie. Murphy, you see Richard Crow, you see so. many of these you uh. >> who else has done it said the. entertainer, you see Mike Els, you see. so many take that step, they start on. the stage and the next thing they just a. smooth transition. Uh the weigh-ins, you. see them, they either do TV or they go. straight to movies. Was that always your. ambition? >> That was the player from the jump. Okay, that was the plan. But I just when it. when it started to happen it was like I.

mean you know I think I think I I just. thank God for the opportunity to be like. cuz it was just so such a smooth. transition you feel me and then. everybody I was around during that movie. was just. >> I mean. >> straight up everybody was just like hey. >> it was like it was like summer camp for. a summer dog. I'm with myself Hernandez. with my dog now with Ben Marshall like. you know what I'm saying also on SNL. with me and Kuma good Jr. Mason Good Jr. Yeah. Mason Gooden. >> You got a kissing scene in this. So how. so how do you rehearse for a kissing. scene? Oh, it was weird, bro. Cuz you. got they got like they got like an.

intimacy intimacy uh coordinator. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. Make sure you don't you don't want. >> What kind of job What kind of job is. that? How should you get a job like that. where it's like you just going to be. kissing hoes all day? How you get a job. to teach people how to kiss? Martin Lawrence and to watch him he's. all quiet he's not saying anything he's.

just chill she he and and the uh uh. director say action and then he go. >> I'm like Bro, and you know me, I'm I'm. waiting till the very last minute. >> Yeah. Because that I mean, were you like. that when you first got into standup? Were you nervous the first time you went. on stage? >> No, but I've been a problem my whole. life. So it's like I've been talking to. people that for forever. You feel what. I'm saying? So I wasn't I wouldn't say. nervous, >> right? Mike is in that movie also. >> Yeah. Yeah. He was great. >> But you know, Mike and Kev is it you. know what and and and and I know you. probably saw when they had the rose for. Kev and and and um Cat came out and it. seems like Kevin is making peace with. everybody that he may or may not have. had beef with in the past because Kevin. and and and Mike has had some things.

going back and forth. Obviously, we know. it's very publicized that Kevin and Cat. and uh it seems to me that I can see in. the very near future that Kevin Cat is. going to do something together. Yeah. What was it like? What was it like to. see those two guys? Because you know uh. uh uh Mike Els is man. >> But he funny as hell, dog. >> All the time. But it seems to me that a. lot of people that you looked up to that. you've had an opportunity to meet. they've given you and shown you love. >> They the exact same person that I. expected them to be which is I I thank. >> How was it working with Tiana? >> She was the I worked with her on SNL. too. She was like, she was great. We we. we did a couple scenes during the movie, but not not too much. But uh but during. even SNL, she was she was cool as hell. >> She was the one you were kissing on, was. it? >> Nah, I wish. >> Come on, man. What? >> Right, man. That What do people get. wrong about Tony Hinchcliffe? >> I mean, you just got to know the guy. I. know the guy. Like I know him for real. You feel me? I mean, when you think about the list of. who's who some of the the greatest. comedians have been on SNL, and nobody. has parlayed that success on SNL better.

But. when I got older like I got to watch. like certain channels but not nothing. too crazy. You feel what I'm saying? By. the time she come my room and I was. watching like comedy center or something. she never turn it off. >> You feel me? >> Yeah. >> And I think back it's like oh [ __ ] Like.

that was a big like pivot moment for. when the stand up thing. >> Yeah. Cuz she looking like you know what. all that other mess but this might be. your calling son. >> She never my favorite thing my mama. would do people ask all the time they be. like so did you like see this? Did you. see this happen for your son? And then. she always be like well I knew he was. different. [laughter]. I knew he couldn't have no regular job. I know he really couldn't. So I mean did. I see it? No. But am I did I expect. that? I mean, you know what I'm saying? It's like She thought I was going to be.

This movie has outrageous. moments, R-rated physical comedy, crazy. situations, but it also has heart. That's what surprised me. You're going. to laugh a lot, but underneath all that. madness is really about family pressure, rivalry, and trying to hold your life.

remember I the first therapist I went. to, I remember she used to tell me all. the time, you know, she's like, Shannon, are you arguing for right or are you. arguing to be right? languages. She's speaking Spanish, you're speaking Mandarin Chinese. Either. she learns your language or you learn. hers or it's never going to work." She. also said, you know, she told me a lot. of things about my childhood and how I. am because I'm, you know, I I grew up. with my grandmother and so I I'm I'm. very respectful and I there are certain. things that I just I just think that. this I just can't do for sure. And and. so it for she they forced me to take a. strong hard look at myself. But when. you've been doing something 30 40 years, it's hard to change that. It's hard to. change that. Amen.

I mean I got sick one. time and I just couldn't go to work for. like a week and a half and that ate at. me but I just couldn't I physically just. couldn't go nowhere. >> But other than that it's been. >> from that day forward to till to right.

now it's been every day. >> for almost four and a half years. Huh? >> Yeah. I thank God. Damn. >> I thank God. >> You said you got on your knees and you. asked God said, "God, if you show up, tell me what my passion is." I promise. you. So, prior to that, you really. didn't know what you wanted. You thought. you wanted to do stand up, but there. were a lot of other things going on your. head. >> When I was 19, I worked at Foot Locker. I I got a job Foot Locker right after. right after school ended. And I remember. like everybody I'm talking about my dog. Vince, my dog JJ, my manager at at the.

Foot Locker. >> And I would tell I would tell basketball. stories from high school, right? The. whole time it was like slow was dead. Nobody was in there. Right. >> So I went to the stores all day. >> And one day they were just like, "Uh, >> hey, we tell all these stores, >> man. You you should try stand up.". Right. >> So I was 19. I tried it for the first. time with my mama with my mom and [ __ ]. like that. And she took me out there. She didn't want me to go by myself. And. I got on stage and and I did I did okay. It was decent. But I I I wanted I asked. a bunch of the other comics like who was. around just for like help and [ __ ] like.

that at the time. And nobody. >> wanted help. They want they ain't they. ain't want to give me the time of day. and I was like man I'm just go back to. doing what I was doing which was just. what I was doing was just being lost. running around doing. >> did that hurt you. >> because you thought they I'm not saying. bro give me everything but give me some. tips. And for the most part, if you play a. high school sport, more times than not, probably 80% of the kids want to go to. college, 100%. So, and this is what I. just tell. I said, "Look, if you want, it's okay. And there's nothing wrong. with a great 9 to5. There's nothing. wrong with that.". >> Not at all. >> But greatness is outside of those hours. Greatness is a 24hour. It's how you eat. It's how you sleep. It's how you live. It's all encompassing. It's an unquenchable desire.

to be better. And some people don't. understand that. And you know what? It's. not for everybody. Everybody can't be. great. The car. gone. Right. Well, this before then. So. we still got the car there, but the car. not going to make it to Miami. I had to. show him in Miami, but I couldn't. The. car won't go to make it. >> Yeah. You wouldn't drive from Orlando to. Miami. >> But I can make it to Tampa, >> right? So, I went to Tampa. I get on the. show. Uncle Lesie, he tell me, "Hey, man, you should come to uh you got to. come to Austin. Nobody going to find you. here." I said, "All right, bet back bet.

back bet back bet back bet back bet back. bet back bet back bet back bet back bet. that up. So, I tell my dad about that. [ __ ] He said, "All right, well, we'll. go out there, try it out." Me and my dad. went for. 7 days, I think. For 7 days from from uh. from Sunday to Monday. No, Sunday to we. left Tuesday morning. So we we get there. and it's just it's me and my pops in a a. hotel room just just me and him and. we just started like running. >> Mhm. >> And then people started to figure out in.

the club open the Austin open. Oh this. what I was talking I lost my train. thought this why I tell you this. So I a. long time ago I did a open mic um in. Orlando dude uh named Cam Illich was. there right? He was a college student at. uh University of Florida. Came up to do. a show. I met him then. I get in line. for the uh the mothership uh open mic. where it's like it's random. You know. what I'm saying? But it's it's the first. one. So it's like maybe like 150 people. lined up. >> Damn. >> For the mic for like 15 spots, right?

>> I get in line right behind Cam from uh. from Florida. >> And I don't remember him at first. He. tell me about all the all this d. whatever. And then um as I remember who. he is, we start running around that. whole week together. Like he run around. me the whole week, you know what I'm. saying? Show me around, [ __ ] like that. >> By the end of the week, he go, "Hey, bro, if you want to move here, I got a. uh I got a room in my house and I can. get you a job.". >> You feel what I'm saying? >> You like, "Hey, that's all I needed to. hear. >> That's all I needed." And so I went back.

and I told my dad, I was like, "All. right, so I'll go back I'll go back to. uh we go back to Orlando and I'll go. back to Austin maybe like two months. from now." Mhm. >> My dad was like, "That. you quitting your job today. You going. to Austin right now." And for the first. couple months, I just pay your rent. Damn. And so I moved in with them boys. And then my dad covered my rent for like. two months. And then uh after that, >> you. >> we we moving. >> ripping and running. But I call him.
