He's. one of the most celebrated tight ends in. college football history. He was part of. arguably the greatest college football. team assembled, the 2001 University of. Miami Hurricanes. He won a national. championship with the Cane, led the team. in receptions. He was inducted to the. University of Miami Hall of Fame, the. Northeastern Oklahoma&M Hall of Fame, and the College Athletic Hall of Fame. He's a first team college all-American,

football man. A lot of people need a. that's a you got the Hall of Fame second. part of the Hall of Fame as a person. You know what I think the thing is shock. is that everybody saw your personality. on the field and they just naturally. thought it would be a smooth seamless. transition like man he's going to be on. television. They thought you were Grunk. before Grunk. [laughter]. So everybody just thought like man Shan. is going to do television. You look at. his personality but it seemed like you. kind of retreated to the back. >> Yeah. I don't I didn't I don't know. I. didn't wouldn't have been in front of TV.

unless the teams forced me anyway to do. interviews. But uh no I just uh. afterwards you know I I like to travel. and do things. cuz I'm not much of a you. know public person I would say these. days and uh that's fine. Maybe one day. you know you have me on a show again. So. >> okay I appreciate that. Let let's where. it really started for you at the. University of Miami. >> What made you go to the Hurricanes? Because this was not the Hurricanes of. the 80s and the early mid 90s. You kind. they were kind of having them down. They. had still getting good players but they. weren't contending for national.

championships every year like they had. in the past. What made you choose the. youth? Uh, you know, the head coach, Butch Davis, was from Oklahoma. Okay. >> And the offensive coordinator, Larry. Coker, was from Oklahoma. Okay. >> So, uh, you know, they talked to my mom. on the phone. They were like, you know, um, I don't know what they said, but I. didn't really have a choice. My mom. said, "Your ass is going to Miami.". Okay. >> So, uh, yeah, they were, um, they were. from Oklahoma. I trusted them. Um, I. knew that I could have stayed in state. in Oklahoma, >> right? >> And, you know, been whatever. But I. knew, you know, this organization, this. college is has been, you know, top of.

the top for many. you know, I'm if I can. make it there, >> right, >> I can make it anywhere. So, uh, it was a. great decision and, uh, you know, practicing against everyone is has made. me iron sharpens iron, man. >> It was great. >> When did you realize that, you know. what, we this is you're looking around. maybe in team meeting when you first. have the team meeting before you have. practice. You look around and then you. go to practice and you're like, I think. we got a chance to do something really. special this year. When did you realize. that you guys had a special team? uh.

when everyone made the conditioning test. I remember in the offseason and they. made it even harder at M uh that year. So, we have offensive linemen that are. getting the 110s and, you know, 17. seconds and, you know, 20 consecutively. Um, wow. That's when, you know, we we we. knew that no one's going to beat us that. year. But if we rewind the year before, we only lost one game and we we had a. special team. We should have played in. the national championship that year. Uh, but the BCS left us out. But, um, yeah. uh you know, going to school there and. and being around those guys, it was it.

was such an experience for for me as I. got older um in the NFL, you know, a. couple years later, it was it was easy. But um I'll tell you a funny story. When. I first got to Miami, uh DJ Williams, that was the first person I saw. All. right. And this is the Gator Gatorade. player of the year. Um John Madden said. he can go pro right out of high school. Remember that day south. >> from DA South like 140 something years. And this guy played uh linebacker. He. played running back in high school. Both. Um so my mom and everyone drops me.

off, right? I'm sitting here. We get. physicals. I'm going in. That was the. first person I saw with his shirt off. I. called my mom after that. I said, "Mom, you about to turn around and come back. and get my ass." I'm telling you right. now, I just saw a man allegedly. He's. only he just turned 18 in a couple. weeks. He's 17 still. I think I'm in the. wrong arena here. [laughter]. But no, it was a great experience, man. um playing against you know like DJ John. Vilma's Dan Morgans practicing with them. uh it just made us stronger as a team. man and I it was it was just an amazing. experience. It was maybe a lucky guess I.

would say myself but my mother is the. one who kind of pushed me off. >> Did you feel that did you feel like if. you had stayed in Oklahoma because that. was so close to home and then you know. what maybe I'm not going to take it as. serious as I need to be. I mean Miami is. probably about as far as you can get. away from Oklahoma and it is so. different than Oklahoma. There's nothing. in Miami that reminds you of Oklahoma. So, you felt that you really really. needed to get away? >> I need to dis disassociate from my high. from everybody from my high school. friends from I don't you know just could. get away and and do it on my own. You.

know, if I was at Oklahoma, I could. always lean on, you know, this and that. It was always excuses. So, here there. was no excuse, >> right? >> So, it was. >> So, you're practicing and you're like, "Okay, tight end." And you look, you. mentioned, you mentioned some of the. names. You mentioned Vilma, you. mentioned DJ Williams, first round draft. picks, you got a Ed Reed, uh Taylor. Shawn Taylor rested. So, uh Andre Ro on. the offensive side, you got. >> Oh, you got from Dorsy, Clinton Porters, Frank Gore, waiting, >> Willis McGee. I mean, it's just. >> you got Andre Johnson, you got Reggie. Wayne, Santana Moss. You look at the.

tight ends that's backing you up. Do you. like. >> Winslow? I had Winslow. I had all these. people. Us came in, Kevin, all of them. all firstrounders. You do you did you. think like man if I miss a day in. practice there's a good chance I might. not get my job I MIGHT NOT GET MY JOB. BACK. OH, I GOT THERE WAS days that if. you thought that Butch Davis already. sent your ass back home, but hey, coach. So, yeah, I mean it before that. Yeah, you get your ass beat after he would. send you home. You know, that's how he. it was um everyone took accountability. and uh and the when I first got there,

it was it was an amazing experience with. Bush Davis, right? >> Very hard hard stern coach. >> Uh tough, you know. Um. >> obviously he left to go pro the next. year and he left an amazing team. Like. you said earlier, we considered the best. college football team and uh. >> I'm sure Butch Davis is regretting that. now, but we had Larry Coker is such a. kind-hearted, great coach, complete. polar opposite. >> He's very different than Bush. >> Very different. And the players, you. know, we kind of all rallied to the. athletic director and say, "Hey, if you. hired Barry Barry Alvarez from um. Wisconsin, we're all leaving,

>> right?". >> And uh they listened to us and we hired. uh Larry and boom, over. >> It took off. You're going through the. season um and you guys are just like. beating people. I'm talking about you're. just demolishing people and you're. making it look easy and you're like, you. know what, did you know probably like. five, six games in that you know what, if we stay healthy, we're going to win. the national championship. >> Yeah, for sure. Um I think uh the first. I know after the Penn State game and um.

you know what we did with them on live. television uh it was it was an. embarrassment. I know on their part. I I. know that they probably still feel it. today, but um we knew Yeah, we. definitely knew. Um it was so good. I'm. The coaches were trying to like not make. each player have such a good game. because they want us to come back the. following year. So they already had in. their mind we're winning the national. championship. We can't lose these guys, right? >> So only let them only let Jeremy have 95. yards a game. Not let me 100 yard games, you know. >> Clinton Poris is the same way. So um. >> yeah, we knew we knew we knew I think we.

knew before he even played the first. game of that year. I think we knew, you. know, we were we had that taste in our. mouth to get screwed on the year before. in the national championship game. break it down and you look at it player. for player, talent for talent, both. sides of the football, is the 2001 Miami. Hurricanes the greatest team assembled? Yeah, I think that's uh without a doubt. I believe it is. You know, what we. separate oursel with those other people. is what everyone talks about why they. come to University of Miami. Swagger. We. have something that no one else has and. everyone else [ __ ]. >> right? [laughter]. >> Sorry. It's just how it is. Like we're. at right now. Everyone wants 11. They. can't have it. There's only one. Just. like the Hurricanes. >> From that 2001 Hurricane team, you had.

38 players drafted to the NFL. 17 of. them was first round draft picks. on one. roster. [laughter]. >> I know. >> That's crazy shock. >> I know. That's crazy, right? >> What were pra what were practices like? Were they intense? >> Yeah, it. >> cuz you know back then y'all hit. I. mean, >> no, it was it was intense. It was uh. Yeah, it was intense. It was prec, you. know, before NCAA rules, you you had, you know, three or four hours a day on. the field. So, yeah, it was tough. Uh. yeah, Green Tree at M was a tough.

experience. Um, I it made all of us, you. know, so to go out there and have a. full-fledged riot pretty much every day. >> There were a lot of heat. There were a. lot of fights cuz it get hot in Miami. Se, you know, when it's hot. >> Oh, it's hot. It's bad. It was bad. [laughter] It was bad. It was bad. You. know, it was bad for sure. >> But obviously when you're dealing with. the you obviously you have other teams. You have Florida, you have Florida. State. How important was it for you guys. to make sure let everybody know because. at that point in time Florida had. started to assert themselves as being. one of the pre now all of a sudden they.

had taken over is Florida and Florida. State and kind of you has kind of slid. to the back a little bit. So how. important was it for you guys to like. hold on we back. >> get on to the back now y'all know where. y'all supposed to be. Yeah, we we had. that mentality my first year when we. didn't get to play the championship game. and but the best thing about that was we. got to play Florida and you know what it. happened in the Sugar Bowl. Not only. they got their ass beat on Bourbon. Street literally. I mean it's documented. and y. >> Yeah, I missed it. I had a blizzard in. Oklahoma. True story. Couldn't get.

there. I was three days late to bowl. practice. But I'm talking about a full. team on team. They played we played. games both teams with black eyes. It. >> was great. They can't do that anymore in. these days. You know how it is. They. keep it, but everybody, you know, they. y'all play they play Madden now for, you. know, kind of simulate the game and. stuff like that. There was there was no. there was no fratinizing back then cuz. really uh excuse me, um. >> uh uh Jerome Brown, Jay Boogie, rest. your soul, they kind of started this. when they went to Penn State. Absolutely. When they played Penn State. in the Fiesta Bowl and they was trying.

to get together and they ended up. leaving. >> No. Yeah. Absolutely. And it's like that. kind of started the mentality and then. all of a sudden the dancing the carrying. on with Thrill Hill and all those guys. and you guys brought that back. >> Absolutely. So after that game, I mean. everyone in Florida, I mean all the. recruits, they knew we're back, right? >> We're back and we just knew if we didn't. lose a game that next year no one's. going to beat us. >> Uh you guys f I can't believe did y'all. win the fight? That's all I need to. know. Y'all won the game, but did you. win the fight? >> I hear mixed reviews, you know. Uh I.

wasn't there, but I think yeah, we won. the fight for sure. There was, you know, Alex Brown, all those guys, man, they. got uh they got beat up, unfortunately. [laughter]. >> What was your what was your welcome to. the U moment? Because you mentioned all. of these guys and some of these guys. went on to become Hall of Famers. Ed. Reed, who I believe is the greatest. safety that ever played. Andre Johnson. in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. You. had Vilman and DJ made Pro Bowls. Uh, as. a matter of fact, Vilma was the. defensive rookie of the year. >> Absolutely. >> So, what was your moment? Welcome, welcome to the U. You're like, this is. different and I made the right decision.

Uh, you know, I got there and they only. let you practice against the younger. guys, you know, uh, when you first get. there. >> Okay. >> Just like when you're in the pros, like. the mini camp, rookie mini camp, basically the vets have the next week. off. So, uh, you know, practicing uh, against Vilma and uh, it's supposed to. be seven on seven, but it's supposed to. be, you know, tap or whatever. We're. just learning the plays, whatever. And. uh he hits me. I'm talking about after. the second play, [laughter] he hits me. in the hip and I'm like went off in the.

in the fence. I came back and I said, you know, coach, what's going on? It's. supposed to be whatever. He goes, no, it's full speed. He goes, we got we got. to wear these little egg crates. Don't cuz you had the helmet on still. He goes, don't no, you're you full. speed. I said, okay. I am at a. university that I'm sure no other. college does that. It's full speed with. shells on. >> So So did you get your get back? You. like, "Okay, cuz he's going to think I'm. going to slow down and I'm going to put. my helmet right in this. >> full speed." From there day on out, I. was okay.

>> When you watched Ed Reed, did you know. Ed Reed was that special when you. watched him in college? Did you think he. would be able to transition? And many. believe he's the greatest. He's a top. 75, top 100 player in NFL history. U. like I said, I believe he's the greatest. safety to ever play. Did you know. watching him practice every day that he. was going to be that good? >> No, I thought Ed was good. Uh, but I. thought Ed it was going to be great. more he polishes and what what he does.

to his game. It's it's an amazing to see. it's not like he you see how much. progress he's made to get better as a. player, but just how more intelligent. what he does when it comes towards film. study and he knows what's going on and. in order to have that instinct and you. keep doing it. I mean, he always had the. athletic skills and everything else, but. I'm. >> but I didn't I don't mean that question. know Ed, if you're watching this or. anything obviously, but I'm saying I. didn't expect and continue to evolve. He. keeps getting better and better and. better and better and. >> I mean I don't think anybody can can see.

that in the future, you know. Um. >> thought he'd be good. Yeah, he. >> but he's going to be great but I didn't. think he the best. >> But I mean that that goes a lot. I mean. that goes without saying how much work. he's put. >> the the mental part which is I would say. what do you think? I mean it's it's a. lot to do in our game right here. His. his instincts are unbelievable, but the. film study and he trusts himself. You. got to be like when you play defense, you can't just always be able to react. Sometimes you have to take the fight to. the offense and his instincts. He'll see. a lineup. He'll see a formation. He'll.

see a set and he'll see, okay, down in. distance. I've seen this. They run this. like 85% of the time. I'm going to trust. my instincts that they're going to do it. again. >> And he could have sat back and been. great like and listen and still been a. Hall of Famer. But if he didn't make. those, listen, if he didn't make those. gamles like he did, I mean, you saw how. he's a gambler. >> Yes. >> He I mean, he'll go and he'll pick I. mean, if he didn't do that and have that. gambling instinct, >> he wouldn't be the top hunter of all. time or the best safety of all time. That's for sure. >> But you look, one of the great safeties. and he looked like he was headed to a.

Hall of Fame career was Shawn Taylor. Shawn Taylor was a backup. He was a. special teams guy. >> Yeah, but I mean he was we had [snorts]. >> many believe that he could have started. had it not been for I think was was Ed. and Andre Ro was the starter. Yeah. Yeah. We had Ed and Antel and we had we. had we had a bunch of good guys, but he. played a very special part. I mean, he. blocked punts for us. He won a lot of. games for us. Um, and we only played. until I mean, we only literally played. until the second quarter. >> if we played at halftime. We even played. till halftime. That's that was a very.

rare a rare occasion. So, yeah, he was. uh he was special. I mean, like you. said, God rest his soul, he was he's. he's loved all through the world, especially here in Date County. Yeah, >> he was a very huge influence towards. tons of young kids that are growing up. and his legacy lives on and we all miss. Sean. We all we all respect the player, Hall of Famer for sure, transitioning to. to like, you know, year after year. getting better. >> Yeah. >> Something happening like that. It it. took all a piece of everyone's soul in. um in this area, man. It's it was it was.

tough. >> for someone to be his size to be cuz. normally guys that are his size and play. safety, they're stiff. He was not stiff. He was fluid. He could swivel his hips. You're talking about somebody 6'3, 225, 235 pound that could run 43, that could. have a 40 inch vertical. He could. backpedal, he could play. >> It was It was a more skilled, quicker. Steve Atwater. >> Yes. Yes. >> Which is so rare because no one's. supposed to be that that fast, that. tall, their legs, and how he got in and. out of uh breaks was amazing, you know, and I got to play with one of his.

defensive coordinators or coached by, I'm sorry, in New Orleans, >> Greg uh Greg William. >> and he was tells me stories about Shawn. and I just h it was it was awesome. Great experience. >> You led that team. in receptions. Clinton Porters was in. the back field. Frank Gore was in the. back field. Willis McGee was in the. backfield. Santana Moss. Uh Reggie. Wayne, I think. Um wasn't um And Dre. Dre was on that team as well. >> Andre. Yep. >> I mean, you probably should have You. could have led the team with 30 catches.

How do we spread all that around? You. got McGeehe, you got Porter, you got. Gore, and then you got Santana, you got. Dre, and you got you got Reggie. Like I. said ear, I think they were jockeying to. like try to see [laughter]. who's not going to leave the NFL. >> But they would leave and they ain't. coming. >> Oh, no, no. But it happened like in our. Rose Bowl national championship. The can. it open the can of worms went when Andre. Johnson went for 200 and something. Nebraska was done with me and I'm like, "Oh, there goes Dre one. They can't do. it." Second half. They kept doing it. We're going to make this guy beat us. Well, it I mean the game would have.

beenund and something to zero if that. would have happened, you know, right? So, uh we had a great a great squad on. both sides. Brian McKini, uh you know, a. bunch of first round line. >> McDougall, Vince Wilfridge, all I mean, we had some good good defensive people, man. >> Wow. >> Which play when you when you watch all. these guys practice, you got an. opportunity to see them every day uh in. the weight room, um the training and and. on the field. Which guy did you like got. him? Damn, he's special. Oh man, that's.

easy. I got to Miami my first year and I. I saw Dan Morgan for the first time and. I saw how he prepared himself uh with. weight rooms, full speed, every speed, everything. And uh I remember catching. some kind of fluke pass in practice. coming down with it and he looked at me. and he goes, "You're going to be good. You're going to be good. Keep working.". And I just watched him throughout the. whole year prepare and everything and he. was a pros pro. You know, the general. manager right now, Carolina Panthers.

He's a pro. >> He was preparing. He was preparing like. a professional even in college. >> Yes. >> And that right there, I was like, this. is right here, is the Grandmaster. I. just watch what he does. And uh I mean, you knew it. When he walked down the. hallway, the coaches would even tell us, "Dan's in a bad mood. Don't look at him. in the eyes." I mean, he had one thing. on his mind that was going full, knocking someone out. I'm telling you, it was it was a surreal experience, you. know. Amazing. Amazing. Um someone to. look up to. Was that was easy. Your. roommate in college was Bryant McKini.

What I mean, you talking about How tall. was uh uh uh Mac? 67 68 68 69. He's big. tall guy, that's for sure. Yeah. >> Goes to the What What was it like? I. mean, cuz normally they norm in college. normally you try to put like. >> receivers and receivers, right back, running back. How do they get How do. they get a tight end? >> He was older. He was like a year older. So, uh one of the coaches like, "Hey, I. got a house down the street. Rent it. from us." So, we did. Uh, but I mean. this guy, I mean, talking about having a. bodyguard 247 here, it was great. Um,

what a great player, a great person. We've had some great times. Jared. Payeyton, Walter Pton son, was in the. mix with us, the roommates hanging out. Uh, it was just a good college. experience, you know, but that comes. with winning. Well, you don't [ __ ] I. only lost one game in college, so that's. I'm always going to have a good time, you know. [laughter]. Who don't like winning? If I made you pick of all the great. Miami Hurricanes, you only get four to. put on Mount Rushmore. Boy, >> and you got some good ones,

>> man. >> Not just the ones you play with because. >> you had Ray, you got Sam, >> you got Jack Young Bloodood, you got. Vinnie, [laughter]. >> you got Highsp, you got Mike. >> Mike is really the one that started. that. >> Yep. And uh so who you're looking back. at it and like I said there's a great. Otis Anderson you got some great guys. I. think Jim Otto went to the youth. >> Yeah. >> When you look back you got to put four. the four greatest Miami Hurricanes.

>> All right. Um. for the swagger purposes and just who is. Miami? Mike. Urban got there. He's got something to. do. He'll have something to do with the, >> you know, university for the next. >> whatever. As long as he lives and he's. going to still have it. >> Mike's got to be on there. >> Ray's on there. You, you know, Ray's on. there. Uh, oh man. Um, I had to give uh, man, I don't know. Ed is on there. Ed.

Reed is on there. >> Um, I don't know. I could I could do two. safeties. Sean Taylor is gonna mean he's. meant a lot to everyone down here in the. university. Um, >> oh man, >> there's so many. I don't know. De. Hester's played. Yes, he was. >> Was he on your team? >> Yes. I don't know how we forgot that. >> God, man. >> When you mention the you when you. mention the swag of the U, nobody. embodies the U more than Michael Irvvin. Nobody had he had he probably had more.

fun with them going and getting to the. national championship than even the. players on the team cuz he's on and he. >> the es and flows that he's go I mean. he's all on the ground he's on his back. when they win it. I mean he jumping up. and down he had the belt off. He said, "Listen, TV knows what sells. They could. picture the other 100,000 people to say, but who they go to on the sideline, >> Mike?" [laughter]. >> I mean, you can't you can't make that. up, you know? >> But that's him. People like him, man. He. just know he's not. >> No, he's always like that. They don't.

believe me. >> Always. >> And we're going to talk about in shape. I listen. I know Shane, look at this. >> Mike, another guy that takes really good. care of himself. So, watch this, kids. Look at this. >> Mike Mike is like that. What you see. Mike on television, Mike is like that. when there are no cameras around. when. it's just when he just kicked. Yes, that's that's who he is. >> Um. NIL [laughter]. >> they couldn't have they couldn't have. housed you. I guess a a. good tight end now is worth some days I. guess they project somewhere between 250. and 500,000. >> Oh wow. That's not much. >> But when you when you look at this, how. different do you think the game would. have been had you guys had NIL back then. as a compared to now? >> It might have been a curse. I mean, we. could have just went different ways and. not concentrated on one thing. winning, who had the best car, best house. Not to. say we didn't have that already, but. when everyone kind of has that, it's it. can make things probably sticky. >> But I don't know if I mean, when you. look at the names that you guys have, I. don't know if you guys can pay. everybody. when when they had all the good play. like the Cowboys and the Steelers had. all those good players. >> after my first year going into the. second year when we won that. championship. We would have lost. everyone at the NFL deals. I got more. money going here. So, I don't I'm not a. fan of this [ __ ] And it makes it's a. bad it's a bad precedent when it comes. towards. >> oh if I'm not whatever I could or go get. let me just get a bidding process at the. other school. You know, I'm going to Albany from from. here in uh in New York and uh couple. hour ride or whatever. They sent me a. car driver of one eye and the other eye. was foggy. It look like, you know, I'm. talking about, you know, Glaucom.

>> Glacoma or something. But anyway, it was. it was late cuz we got delayed the. flight. He picked me up. We're going to. Albany. This guy keeps falling asleep. It was like that movie Sleepy Hollow. >> Yeah. >> Like I'm going here here. >> I He end up going the wrong way. >> I thought I'm getting killed. I'm in a. gas station sleeping in the back of a. town car. He don't know where Albany. University is. And uh I almost died on. like three three car wrecks coming down. So I was like, is this a setup by the. Giants? Maybe they did hear too many. booze. [laughter] But I guess it was. just it was just an, you know, it just.

happened, you know. So. >> So you get there, you're excited. You're. like, okay, I'm a New York Giants. And. you know, if you win in New York, if you. can win this, you can win these fans. If. you can get the media on your side, >> that's all it took. >> And it's over. >> That first day when I got there after. the car driver, I try to eat lunch and. the guy won't let me. getting a fist. fight with what one of my teammates. day and how he was as a professional and. And my rookie year, it was, you know, it was tough. You. know, uh I had a great off great, you. know, preseason games and stuff. So. everyone's like, you know, game planning. for me and they just had me run. It was. like a track meet Shawn Peyton had us. and I was I think I lost 15 or 20 pounds. that game. They were IVs and everything,

but I got hit by the safety. I can't. remember his name. He was great at. Arizona. Um, great player. They locked. him. He was good. Um, but that was. probably my, hey, welcome to NFL. You. lost 20 something pounds and you know, it was uh, it was tough, man. >> What do you think your best play of your. career, NFL career is? Was it running. over the guy? >> No. Ah. Uh, I don't know, man. Uh, uh, I I I cherish a Super Bowl catch, you know, in New Orleans, but, um, yeah,

I I mean, it's always enjoyable to run. over someone. Uh, but catching something. meaningful like that is that was pretty. special. Uh, Eli's I caught Eli. Manning's first touchdown pass. That's. pretty special. >> Did you keep the ball or did you give it. to him? >> He thinks he's got the real one and. Canton thinks he got the real one. BUT. YOU KNOW WHO HAS THE YOU KNOW WHO HAS. It. was kind of like, man, that's Brian. Dawkins. He went over the top of, uh, B. Daw and got that. Yeah, he's what a. great player he was. You know, I just. playing in NFC East like that, playing. someone twice a year like that was. tough, man. And I had to psych myself up. and I mean it's documented. I'm telling. people their defense ain't that good. Clearly, they all are all pros. I had to.

see them in the Pro Bowl in Hawaii. But. I'm thinking, you have to become a. different person and say these these. guys aren't that good. These guys I. don't even respect these people as a. person, right? >> B Doc is the most Christian fan all. these people. So I had a lot of myself. in order to that's just to get yourself. going. >> to get myself going and that's the. motivation that I I used always through. my career and I I probably lost that. when I was probably seventh eighth year. It's hard to do that every year and now. man right. >> you can just lolly gag around the rest. but it's hard to do that you know year. in year.

Uh I came from a great. pedigree in Oklahoma. We won. championships in high school. So I was. always had that mentality. But getting. to University of Miami. I think it the. microscope just it, you know, it just. enhanced everything. >> It's almost like you got to trash talk.

You can't be. reserved cuz they're going to get it out. of you. >> Absolutely. >> So what um in in high school, were you a. tight end in high school or you. >> No, I was receiver. I was wide receiver. outside linebacker. Your big ass was a. wide receiver. >> I was skinny. I was like 160 lb, 170. lbs. You know, I was skinny. >> And you played outside linebacker. >> An outside linebacker. I was about 6'2, 150 my junior year. Then I grew, you. know, or six foot, I'm sorry, my junior. year, and then I grew three inches my uh. going into my senior year and gaining. weight, right?

>> But still played receiver. Yeah. >> Did So did you get recruited as a. defensive player also? >> Uh no, I got recruited as a as an. offensive guy. Yeah. As an offensive. guy. Yep. man. Um, what was your go-to. line? Did you say anything crazy? Did. guys want to fight you? Because was it a. part of like to get yourself going or to. try to get. >> It was always about getting myself. going, clearly. But I can't remember the. [ __ ] I would say. I'm sure it would be, you know, it'd be off the wall, you. know. It would it would just be like to. get me going. I would never, you know, like I said earlier, it's it's a. mentality to to.

>> to flip the switch like that, you know, and then [snorts] and then sometimes. when you you know how it is when you're. done playing, you got to flip it off, >> right? >> And I have I I haven't flipped it off. before. When I've seen people in the. parking lot after the games, you not, you know, it's not good. It's not good. Other players, >> you held you held out because obviously. you like, I think I'm deser I deserve. this and and this is what I want and so. you ended up holding out for a period of. time. Was that difficult because you. want to get there and prove that you. made the right decision in selecting me, but I want to get what's there? >> It was super super difficult and I was.

telling my agent Drew Rosenhouse, get it done. And I remember the the. general manager Ernie Corsy I listened. to him on speaker phone he's like. there's no rush we already seen this kid. what he could do in the in the preseason. we already seen it. >> right. >> just it's going to happen and the hold. out was incentives and stuff and I got. pissed at Drew but turned out Drew had. like a huge incentive like a $250. $300,000 $500,000 bonus if I won rook of. the year right. >> so if I had left early I would I was. never going to think I was going to win. rookie of the year and then it happened.

I was like okay right. >> I see the protection part what he's. doing so it's amazing. That's that's that's a part of it. But. but the the teams know. >> when you play football and you get to. this level, you want to play. So they. use your love of the game. >> against you. You know how it is. It's a. business and they're they they're the. business people. We're the employees. >> Yep. So hold on. You held out your. rookie year. >> Not long though. >> Not long. But would you like a week? >> Yeah, I think it was like a like four or. five days. Almost a week I believe.

>> Was this the story that you was telling. about sleeping in the limo? I was late. to camp and this is they this is they. sent me a jet to come and this is what. happened. Sleeping in the limo right. here. I almost didn't make it to camp. even. It have been a dirt nap right. there from that limo driver. Who gives a. limo driver license to drive someone. that looks like that one eye. >> You finally did. Did you do your your. your uh your fight song? You did you. finally do it? >> Yeah, I got in I sung the song fight. song and signing bonus and everything. else. Yeah, absolutely. And Brandon. So, where where did you where did you. take the guys and what was the cost of. the bill? >> Uh, the first rounders had I had to do. donuts year round. >> Yeah. >> Uh, you know, I don't know how much it. was, but it was it was whatever. >> Did you have to bring breakfast. sandwiches? >> Uh, no. >> Any food to the plane? Uh the food of.

the plane. Uh I did. Yeah, I did have to. get but you know I would my I would only. have to get the donuts and I would have. to put the put the money with the other. rookies to do the breakfast sandwich but. they pick it up and do everything else. Okay. >> Uh and then the plane stuff but I did. have to take out the team on the dinners. and in New York is not cheap. huge dinners. Um. >> but the problem the worst problem of. that was was the Pro Bowl. my rookie. year. Well, apparently when you make the. Pro Bowl the first time, this was in. this is Elani. This is the this I'm.

talking to Mr. Probo right here. That's. his that's his middle names right there. But he'll tell you when you're first. time they char I thought, hey, what room. you're in? Thinking like. >> you can't tell. Did you tell him you're. a rookie? >> Yes. Cuz when you're a rookie, you got. to tell them what whatever. And they. found out my room number. And I thought. >> they charge everything to your room. >> Oh, I know. But it was it was way it was. everything. jet ski rentals. You name. it. tight end. You do realize as a rookie. when you become that, there are a lot of. things that comes attached with that. that's like, bro, he ain't even caught a. pass yet. How did he get to become the. highest paid tight end? And there seems. to be like resentment for rookies that. get that enormous amount of salary when. they haven't really caught an NFL. football, ran an NFL play, or did. anything in an NFL game. How did you. handle that? Because there were not only. from other tight ends in the league, but. from your own teammates that you're. making more than some of them, and they.

had been there for a number of years. >> Oh, yeah. It was I mean, it was it was a. great experience, but you know, I handled it like a bit. You know, I I. knew the salary cap grows every year. I'm not stupid. I could look and I don't. know what it is today, but I mean, Titans are making a shitload more. >> They uh $20 million. >> Oh, yeah. >> They're making, you know, the the. highest paid Titans $20 million. We're. talking about, you know, $6 million a. year, $5 million a year here. But yeah, I I I think there is some animosity and. like you said, it's a it's not a good. look, but um it's not my fault. It's the.

salary cap and how much everything's. going up. So, I've always kept that. mentality and I always told that to. other people that are looking for. contracts like you're gonna you'll be. the highest paid for a certain amount of. time because you know why I think I was. the highest paid then Tony Gonzalez came. got his third or fourth contract and. then it keep going. I mean, you know how. it is. >> And then Gates got in behind you Jason. Whitten. >> Okay. So, everyone I mean it's just. that's the way it works. That's the way. it works. So, my ego has never been like. a. >> you know you have to make me the highest. paid every year cuz I've had teammates. that done that you know before and. that's never been me you know never. Looking back now as you're sitting in.

this chair and been away from the game. 15 years, knowing what you know now, what would. you do differently with some of the. money that you had back then? >> We talked about Apple, Amazon, Netflix, Netflix. [laughter]. >> I did get Netflix early though, so I got. some good deals. Uh I. um. >> so you got in with the Netflix when you. used to be able to Netflix would send. you the DVDs, you watch them at your own. leisure and then send them back at your.

at your own leisure. >> Well, I got involved with these guys. that were amazing people in New York and. they got me the IPO uh of Google in the. early 2000s. So I didn't. >> Oh, you sitting pretty. So that's why. you've been building this new place. >> OH, [screaming] NOW IT MAKES SENSE. NO, NO, but you know that was the beauty. about playing in New York. You met guys. that knew about money and and this is a. guy. So, uh I got in early with some of. the things like that. Um but. >> I think the whole culture now has.

changed completely what we had to like. >> to work with and have. You know, the. tight ends are getting paid and they. they they they definitely deserve it. >> Yes. >> I thought but in our my we deserved it. too. >> Yeah. Exactly. So, uh, >> but I never thought I never thought a. tight end would get the I think Kelsey. is the high, not Kelsey. Um, KD KD is. the highest paid at like 19 and a half a. year. I never thought we'd see a a tight. end at $20 million. >> But I mean, the salary cap when I played. was it was only a couple hundred. million. I think now it's like almost.

doubled, right? >> Yeah, it's 300. It's like 301 million. >> $31 million. >> And I think when you played it was like. >> probably like 15. No, because see you got to realize there. was uh there was no free agency when I. first got to the league. Free agency. didn't happen until 93. And so when. >> you played the league for 20 years. >> I play I played 14. So I the first. couple years I mean. >> that's crazy. No free agency. >> No no. So they had your right.
