WOW: SURPRISE state Supreme Court ruling ROCKS election

We have some major news at the. Maryland's Supreme Court. I'm joined by. the governor of Maryland, Wes Moore. Governor Moore, can you explain what. just happened at the state Supreme. Court? This is something that you and I. have been speaking about for years at. this point. So, can you tell us what the. big news is? >> And and and I've been and been fighting. for for years. And and yesterday, you. know, yesterday's decision was just. massive where where where the the. Maryland Supreme Court, and again, by an. overwhelming 5-2 decision, really gave a victory to the people of.

our state. And what they did was they. said that we can have on the ballot and. we now we will have on the ballot where. people have a chance to defend their own. democracy and decide whether or not we. can redistrict redistrict our. congressional our congressional lines. You know, the thing that we have. continually said is that I believe in. national redistricting reform. But what I also know is this, I'm not. blind. And what is happening right now in. absence of national redistricting. reform, you're having a president of the. United States who's deciding to go.

through his own process. And where. Donald Trump is then saying he wants to. do things like nationalize elections. And he wants to do things like put. federal agents around around voting. booths. And he wants to do things like. eliminate mail-in balloting. And he. wants to tell Republican states that. they should do mid-decade redistricting. And so, what has now happened in the. state of Maryland, we've been pushing. for over a year now that Maryland cannot. sit on our hands while getting punched. in the face and while watching all this. happening all across the country. And.

now we're just very, very grateful that. after a lot of work, the the Maryland. Supreme Court has ruled with us. And and. and this will now be on the ballot in. November. >> Okay, so talk us through the procedural. aspects of this. What's the timeline. here? You just mentioned that this. question is going to be on the ballot in. November. So, walk us through between. now and the general election in 2028. >> Yeah, so what is going to happen now is. come come November 3rd, there will be a question on the ballot. about about for Marylanders to be able.

to decide whether or not the whether or. not we can have this freedom and. flexibility to be able to make these. adjustments on our congressional lines. Uh I will be going around prior to. November 3rd and you know and as I've. said, I'm I'm also on the ballot for. re-election come November 3rd and we're. going to urging urging our people to to. vote yes and vote yes. come November 3rd. If we are successful. come November 3rd, what then will happen. is we will have the ability to go back. and forth with our General Assembly and. say that now we have this authority. that's been given to us by the people of.

Maryland, we now must act. And so we. will be able to turn around quickly and. we've already been having conversations. with members of the General Assembly, already been having conversations with. our legislature. So so we know that if. the people of the state give us the. authority to be able to do this, we will. be able to make these adjustments. And I. and I do want to highlight why this is. important, too. Because for anyone who thinks that this. debate is over, they are deeply. mistaken. Because let's be clear, next. year. we know that Mississippi,

we know the potential Georgia, we know that Indiana, we know that other states are now going. to go through and they're going to. follow through on Donald Trump's will, which is go and rig a system, weaken. voting rights, and make this pain. permanent through this aggressive. mid-decade redistricting. So the state. of Maryland, if the voters give us the. opportunity come November 3rd, the state. of Maryland will have an opportunity to. respond. >> Can you talk about the difference from. where we are right now versus just a few. months ago? I mean you and I had spoken. at length about the prospect of Bill.

Ferguson, the state Senate president, blocking this effort. And so how did we. get from that point where there was kind. of a refusal to acknowledge the broader. political environment to right now where. you know now we are in a place where. Maryland Democrats are willing to see. the broader environment and fight fire. with fire. >> Well, I think unfortunately what what. happened was people saw that what we've. been predicting for the past, you know, over a year was happening. >> Right. It wasn't wasn't just alarmism.

>> It was not alarmism. That we were. watching an election being stolen in. front of our faces. That when you when we're talking about. things like the you know, him trying to. eliminate mail-in balloting, which by. the way we sued him over and beat him in. court. When he was talking about things. like telling us to turn over our voter. rolls, which he knows is. unconstitutional and there's no reason. for us to do that because it's a. violation of the 10th Amendment. And. then when he's turning around and then. you saw the fall of the Voting Rights. Act, which was the crown jewel of the. civil rights movement.

>> Yeah. >> And so we've been talking about this for. a year and a half that this was not just. just some you know, this was not just. some some overreaction. We were literally watching an election. being the attempt of an election being. stolen. from us in broad daylight. And so we're. thankful now that we have you know, have. a party that is ready to move, that is. ready to respond, that we're able to. work very hard to go get both the House. and the Senate on board. And then post. November 3rd, if the people of Maryland. vote to be able to make these.

adjustments, we will continue to working. with both the House and the Senate to. ensure that we can present maps. >> Well, I think you know, before we move. on, I think you and the other Maryland. Democrats deserve a lot of credit for. moving this issue forward because you. know, as we've seen it's easy to say the. right things. It's a little bit more. difficult to expend some political. capital and do the right thing and. that's exactly what's happening what's. what's happening right now in Maryland. So again, a lot of credit to to to the. work that you and the rest of the team. have done in your state. To that end,

you did just mention what Donald Trump. is trying to do which necessitated this. kind of response. Right now he is. engaged in this effort to appeal his. illegal executive order basically ending. mail-in ballots except for a narrow set. of circumstances in all of the states. ahead of midterms. even though he's had you know, been. blocked by temporary restraining orders. in lower courts, he's now seeking to. appeal this up to the US Supreme Court. What is your job right now? What are you. looking to do to protect mail-in voting. in the state in your state as he, you.

know, pulls out every stop he can to try. and block basically an an enterprise. that is disproportionately used by. Democratic voters. I mean, let's just. call it what it is. >> He's he's doing this because he knows he. cannot win. on the issues. He's doing this because he knows he. cannot win when you're watching. inflation at three-year highs. He's doing this because he knows what, you know, that you cannot win when. you're starting, you know, starting. trade wars with Canada and putting.

illegal tariffs on other countries. He's. doing it because he knows we're in the. middle of a war that none of us asked. for, that none of us understand, another. forever war that he's wants to get out. of as fast as possible, but he's. realizing that one side can start a war, but one side cannot finish it. Other. people will have an opinion as to when a. war ends. And so, what does he do? He then tries. to rig the system and he tries to cheat. What we're doing here in the state of. Maryland and what I've also been doing. as, you know, I I the other governors.

selected me to be the chair of the. National Governors Association. So, we're working with governors across the. country, both Democrat and Republicans, to basically say, "Remember your rights. and remember your powers.". Because the truth is is that this is a. by if he by doing this, this is actually. taking away from state rights. Elections. were given to the states, not to the. federal government. And that was done by. the Constitution. And so, what we are urging all of our. governors to do, all of our attorneys.

general, all of our secretaries of state. to do, is do not give up your power. because the only way that Donald Trump. can do this is if we forfeit it. And so, we're hopeful that as other courts have. as as other courts have have shown that. regardless of what judge or what jurors. that he puts this in front of, they will. they will go back to their legal. training and the legal foundation which. knows that him trying to do this is a. direct violation of the 10th Amendment. and is a direct violation of state. rights. >> So, I completely hear you on the point.

that this is, you know, in accordance. with the plain text of the Constitution, it's it's abundantly clear. that Donald Trump in the executive. branch should have no oversight in the. administration of election. Time, place, manner of election that belongs to the. states and to Congress, full stop. In. the event that you have a Supreme Court. that is more deferential to Donald Trump. than the plain text of the Constitution, do the governors have a plan in terms of. what to do next? >> Okay. So, we we have been we've actually. been working for months collectively.

to be able to. ensure that this election goes off in. accordance to what the law states out. and making sure that that governors and. states that we do not give up our. authority on something that is so. fundamental to the framework and the. foundation of this country that it was. amongst the you know, it is amongst the. Bill of Rights. It was one of the first. things that they pulled together when. this country was even founded. And so. we've been working for months and battle. boarding and and and red teaming a.

variety of different scenarios, but we. are going to ensure that we will have. free and fair and safe elections inside. of this country. >> What can regular people right now, we're. watching all of this play out. What can. they do if they're looking to help. recognizing the barriers and and. anti-democratic behavior happening at. the hands of the Trump administration? I've been advocating for people to. become poll workers and they can go to. powerthepolls.org, but you know, from. your vantage, how can people who are. looking to help be the most helpful? >> I would say I think the thing that. you've advised is is exactly right for.

people to go be poll workers and for. people to be part of the system. But you know, the other thing I would. tell people to do is make sure no one in. your life does not understand this. moment. Make sure that nobody in your life does. not understand why their vote matters. That no one in your life thinks that. come election day that they're just. going to be too busy, or they're going. to sit on their hands, or it does not. matter. Because everything is on the. line right now. We need to make sure. that the turnout is so overwhelming.

that there that the voter that the voter. response is so enormous. that it is such that it becomes too big. to rig. We need to make sure that everyone has. their voices heard, and that everyone. goes out and is willing to go out there. and protect our basic freedoms. Because. I think about it this way, where I think. about what people were willing to do on. behalf of us. That there were people who were willing. to. walk in in walk in into, you know, into. into fire hoses. and face down police dogs. in order for us to have the right to.

vote. And I think they're looking at us right. now, and they're saying. "This is what we were willing to do to. give you the right. Now, what are you willing to do to keep. it?". And so, what we want is for everybody to. come out and to put together the kind of. numbers that we have never seen before, especially when it comes to midterm. elections. That we are not going to sit. quiet, and we are not going to kowtow. while Donald Trump attends to attempts. to rig a system and make the pain. permanent that his policies are causing. us.

>> Right now, I would also echo that. sentiment that, you know, especially for. those who are watching and you have to. contend with non-political or apolitical. people in your lives, those people might. not care about politics, but politics. impacts them. You know, they might not. care about politics, but healthcare. employees, corporations care about. politics. Utility companies care about. politics. Grocery stores and farmers and. and food manufacturers, those people. care about politics. So, again, people. around this country might say that they. don't care about politics, but the. things that they impact in their daily.

lives, whether it has to do with. groceries or housing or food or. healthcare or electricity or utility. bills. All of those things are. political. >> I mean, when when you're when you're. talking to, you know, just earlier today. I had a chance to talk with a whole. series of of farmers. Um and asked them if this election. didn't matter when they're now dealing. with the fact that fertilizer is up over. 35%. And we're talking family businesses that. have been around literally for. generations that are now trying to.

figure out how they can pay for this. increase in cost that has happened. because of these tariffs. Ask the people. who are getting kicked off of. healthcare. Or the children who are about to lose. snap if these elections don't matter. Your point is exactly right that. everything in our life right now is a. policy decision and these are bad. policies that are being pushed by. federal administration right now. >> Okay, and I want to finish off with. something that you and I have been. speaking about for a quite a while now. and that is that we are about a week. away from the official beginning of the.

NFL season. And you know, these last few. years you've been able to have the last. laugh because your Baltimore Ravens have. been performing quite well and my guys. in blue, the New York Giants, have been. last place in the division and also last. place pretty much in the NFL. But this. year's going to be different. >> And I would go so far as to say that for. the first time in a long time the New. York Giants are on the ascent while the. Baltimore Ravens are looking to. try and claw back what they can and even.

go so far as to say that your guys might. have peaked. So I want your lay of the. land right now in terms of how things. are looking with particular respect to. your Baltimore Ravens and my New York. Giants. >> Well, listen, I I love the fact that you. guys hired the coach that we fired. I I. think that's awesome. [laughter]. >> That's right. Nothing says confidence. like like gladly taking your sloppy. seconds. But you know what? With with. with all of that said, I have nothing. but confidence and and joy at the fact. that we now have Harbaugh. >> I agree. I agree. No, listen and listen, I got.

nothing but love for for for John. Harbaugh. Every single NFL coach would. dream of having a career like John. Harbaugh has had. Um and I just love the fact that that it. took y'all like like 4 seconds to hire. him after we fired him. I just think. that's awesome. Lot of respect for him. >> Yeah, which is By the way, which is. about 3 seconds too many. >> But you know what though, honestly, one. of the reasons that I'm really excited. about what's going to happen with. Baltimore is actually the coaching. piece. You know, we picked up a lot of we. picked up Hendrickson, which is which.

was a massive pick up. for us. And when we lost Crosby, I was a. little bit I felt a way, but. Hendrickson, I actually think many ways. was actually the better deal. So, that. has really solidified helped solidify. our defense. We're coming back healthy, but the thing. I'm most excited about, honestly, is. Minter. Is Jessie Minter, our new coach. This. guy is a defensive mastermind. And I. think that he is going to be able to. bring that real like dog Ravens defense. back, which is exactly what we have been.

missing because for the past couple. years, ironically, the Ravens have been. known as an offensive team, which is so. weird. That is not what the Ravens are. ever known for. I think Minter is going. to bring it back. >> Right. Well, look, between Lamar. Jackson, who is a dog, I mean, the most. elite quarterback in the NFL. You've got. Zay Flowers, one of the best receivers. You've got Derrick Henry, nobody can. stop him. So, >> Yep. Yep. Mark Andrews. Like we're we're. we're like if we stay healthy and now. that we have a defensive-minded coach.

and someone who's going to really come. in and lock that defense down, I mean, I. think we're I think we're in good shape. >> Well, look, here is my case for the New. York Giants. We've got a young team, scrappy team. We've got Jackson Dart, Scat Bo is back healthy, Malik Nabers is. back and healthy. We've got Isaiah. Likely, one of your guys, Darnell. Mooney. And of course, I'm so partial to. him because, you know, spent years. watching him as one of the elite Giants, but OBJ back on the team. He wanted it. more than anybody and I'm just waiting.

week one versus Dallas for him to. recreate that infamous catch with his. hand over his head and. so you know, that that's that's my case. for these guys. >> Well, I'm going to lie. You know, listen, I'm rooting for y'all cuz I will. never root for Dallas. So I'm definitely. rooting for you on week one. The only. thing I'll say about Harbaugh is to be. clear and let me say I I like I like I. like Dak. I actually think Dak is is is. very talented and you're right. He does. have a good combination of he's a he can. be a good running quarterback and he's. showing his arm. He's actually showing.

some real accuracy. The only thing I. will say though is this. Is is. Harbaugh couldn't get Lamar Jackson over. the hump. >> Well, look, we will come back just a few. months from now and I'll be able to rub. this all in your face. So. yeah, but look in in all honesty, you know, especially on this. redistricting thing. Thank you again for. getting this thing done. We're almost at. the finish line here. So we're close to. landing the plane. I know I have been a. bug up your ass along with other. governors about getting this thing done. So I appreciate the work that you're.
