You starting to. understand the trend here where Trump. doesn't actually fix any of the problems. that Americans are contending with. He. just offers up these shallow bargain. basement displays of patriotism by. slapping the name America on things as a.

way to appeal to the kinds of people who. wear American flag coffs and scream. America to make themselves feel like. they're important while voting for a. party that is owed entirely by. billionaires. Republican voters thought. they were getting a populist champion. Instead, you somehow got a dumber. version of George W. Bush and his. Freedom Fries redux from 2003. In fact, you've even got a new forever war in the. Middle East. How about that? What's old. is new? The only thing you're missing is. a vice president who shoots someone in.

the face. But given what we saw on. January 6th, if Donald Trump demanded. it, I have zero doubt that JD Vance, the. obedient little lap dog that he is, would immediately oblige. So, let's talk. about how we got to the point that. Donald Trump is spending his time in. office now attacking the Canadians. First of all, let's not bury the lead. He will attack anyone if it means that. you are not paying attention to his. failures at governing. If it means he. can distract you from the fact that. prices are surging, that we're embroiled.

in a new war, that inflation is up, that. gas prices are rising, and that the. Epstein files haven't been released. Hell, Trump would set a whole pen of. puppies on fire if it meant he could. deflect your attention elsewhere. So, is. it a surprise that he's now attacking. our closest ally and one of our closest. trading partners and also the people who. are known the world over for being the. nicest humans on the planet? No, not. really. Now, that part aside, here's how. the ramping up of this trade war and the.

accompanying acrimony first took hold. First, the excuse was fentanyl. trafficking, even though the amount of. fentanyl crossing from Canada into the. United States is a rounding error. compared to what comes in through the. southern border. Then it was dairy and. lumber. Then it became this vague. grievance about Canada cheating on trade. for decades with Donald Trump flow. throwing out inflated numbers about what. Canadian tariffs supposedly cost. American farmers. And now more recently. it devolved into something even pettier. and this is by Trump's own standards. He. got mad about a Doug Ford ad that used.

Ronald Reagan's own words warning. against tariffs. And Donald Trump called. it fraudulent. Not sure what that meant. and use that as the excuse to blow up. trade negotiations altogether. So, if. you're keeping score at home, the given. rationale has gone from the whole. spectrum of national security to trade. fairness to this ad hurt my feelings. And that was all within the span of just. a few months. But here's the problem. Donald Trump's effort to look tough and. distract from his failures isn't without.

consequence because now Canadian leaders. are fighting back and they're targeting. Trump and his voters specifically. >> up here. Red is liberal, blue is. conservative. It's opposite down there. officials are preparing a three-stage. plan of retaliatory tariffs and other. trade restrictions against the US, which. will be put into motion if. President-elect Donald J. Trump makes. good on his threat to impose a blanket. 25% tariff on all Canadian goods. imported into the US." Canadian. officials said their choice of goods was. meant to be precisely targeted and aimed. at political impact. They specifically. want to focus on goods made in. Republican or swing states where the. pain of tariffs like pressures on jobs. in the bottom line of local businesses. would affect Trump's allies. Canada's.

government hopes that those allies, including governors or members of. Congress, would then pick up the phone. and call Mr. Trump, intervening in favor. of deescalation. So now it's not just a. one-off, it is a blueprint. And frankly, I wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't. just Canada that began employing this. framework, but that all other countries. looking to retaliate against Trump. targeted their retaliation at the states. run exclusively by the people enabling. Donald Trump. And look, this is a point. that I've made before and I'll make it. again. When Trump wants to do something,

he does it. Remember when he decided. that the Gulf of Mexico was now called. the Gulf of America and then dedicated. all of his resources to making that. happen? Yeah. That shows that when Trump. cares about something, it gets done. Which underscores this point. The reason. that your health care is not being. expanded is just because Trump doesn't. care. The reason that your food. assistance is being cut is because Trump. doesn't care. The reason that your. prices are still high is because Trump. doesn't care. The reason that we're. paying billions for war overseas is. because Trump doesn't care. The reason.

the Epstein co-conspirators are still on. the loose is because Trump doesn't care. Again, when he wants to do something, he. doesn't let anything stand in his way. Not the courts, not judges, not. prosecutors, not the law, not the. Constitution, certainly not the other. branches of government. So, the things. that are not getting fixed are staying. broken. Not because Trump can't, but. because Trump won't. So, I hope. Republican voters are paying attention. because this right here is what. unbridled, full, unapologetic Republican.
