know and I don't plan to find out. Like, I'd say that this was a swing and a. miss, but she didn't even take a swing. For context, in case you don't know who. Darlene Graham is, she's the sister of. late Senator Lindsey Graham. She was. appointed to fill his seat after he. passed away. And now she's running in a. special primary runoff against Ralph. Norman for a full six-year term. And she. has Trump's endorsement. She had never. held elected office before this year. And when asked to explain why the. world's most consequential flashoint. with China matters to the United States,

her answer was to talk about her. brother's 33 years in the Air Force and. her dad's time in the army. And then. repeat again that national security is. quote not my thing. Not her thing, as in. a hobby she hasn't picked up yet, as. opposed to the actual job she is. applying for a six-year contract to do. And look, normally this is where I'd say. that both parties have had unqualified. candidates. Everybody's had an. embarrassing debate moment. God knows I. understand that after watching Joe Biden.

in 2024. Let's not overstate one gaff. But I don't think this is just one gaff. because it's part of a much bigger and. more deliberate pattern with today's. Republican party. And that pattern is. this. They have fully, openly, unapologetically traded competence for. loyalty. Think about who Trump has. surrounded himself with. Not the most. qualified people in the room, but the. most loyal people in the room. Cabinet. picks are chosen for their willingness. to say yes, not their expertise in the. agency that they're running. You've got. ambassadors with zero diplomatic.

experience. Health officials who've. spent years spreading medical. misinformation who are now running. public health agencies in the United. States. And now a senator who by her own. admission cannot answer a first week of. the job question about Taiwan who's. getting a presidential rally and a full. endorsement anyway. But from Trump's. perspective, that's not a bug. That's. the whole point. He does not want. senators who are going to independently. evaluate whether a Taiwan policy makes. sense. Hell, he doesn't want senators.

who are going to independently evaluate. anything. He wants senators who will. vote the way he tells them to vote, no. questions asked. A senator who doesn't. understand the South China Sea is a. senator who is not going to push back. when the administration does something. reckless in said South China Sea. Ignorance isn't a liability in this. White House's eyes. It's a feature. It's. the goal. It's the difference between a. colleague and a rubber stamp. And Trump. has made abundantly clear which one he.

wants sitting in that chamber. And look, I'm frankly not interested in mocking. Darlene Graham as a person. You know, losing a sibling is genuinely awful. I'm. not going to pretend otherwise. But. sympathy for her loss and qualification. for the United States Senate are two. completely separate questions, and. Republicans keep trying to collapse them. into one so that anybody who raises the. second question sounds heartless for. even asking. Here's the problem with. that. The Senate is not a memorial. It's. not a length of service award for a.

family that already gave the seat to one. member. It's not a grief gift. It is one. of a hundred votes on whether we go to. war, whether we arm Taiwan, whether we. deter a Chinese blockade that could. reshape the entire global economy, whether we stay at war in Iran, whether. we impose tariffs or sanctions, and on. and on. These are literally life and. death decisions made with your tax. dollars by people who are supposed to. have at least a working understanding of. the stakes before they cast their vote, not a plan to just do everything I can.

based on family sentiment alone. If. Darlene Graham wants to run for the. Senate because she genuinely wants to. serve, that's a conversation worth. having on the merits and she's free to. do so. but installing someone in that. seat simply because of who her brother. was only to then discover live on stage. that she can't answer the most basic. national security question in the entire. debate isn't some heartwarming story. about family legacy. This is a warning. about how casually, how haphazardly.

Republicans are willing to hand over. enormous power to people who are simply. unprepared to wield it as long as they. can be trusted to vote the right way. when Donald Trump calls because, god. forbid anything else matters other than. that. And that really is the tragedy. buried inside this clip. This is not. really about Darlene Graham. individually. It is about an entire. political party that has decided that. competence is optional so long as. loyalty is guaranteed and a country. that's going to be living with the. consequences of that trade long after. this election is over.
