OMG: First look at Trump's convention… attendance is BRUTAL
If you're the guy whose first, second, and third priority is crowd size, you. are not going to like what day one of. the Republicans first ever midterm. convention looks like right now. >> [music]. [music]. >> Here are all of the reasons that this is. really humiliating. First of all, the. Republicans are in Dallas. The fact that.
you guys can't find Republicans in Texas. to fill up an arena just weeks before an. election is not great and a testament to. the rock bottom enthusiasm that. Republican voters are displaying right. now. Second, isn't the whole thing on. the right about crowd size? Isn't that. the thing that we've heard about for. years and years and years? How many. people show up to genuflect at the altar. of Trump and Republicans and now they. don't even have that? Third, this is. their Hail Mary to turbocharge.
enthusiasm. Instead, people are going to. see a half-empty room and it's only. going to fuel the fire of apathy even. more on the right. If the point is to. show the audience that people care, perhaps the image of a half-empty arena. isn't going to lend itself to that goal, just, you know, for starters. All of. which is something that Donald Trump and. Republicans should have known from the. start as CNN's Harry Enten explained. here. >> You know, this idea is so ill-conceived. and you can just see it by the fact that. they're doing it when the football.
season is starting. Who does that? My. God. >> 60% of Democrats are extremely motivated. to vote. 59% of that hardcore Trump base. MAGA Republicans, 59% of the same as the. Dems. The ones who are not motivated to. vote are the non-MAGA Republicans, the. people who are far less likely to. approve of Donald Trump, the people who. think that Donald Trump's Republican. Party probably this should be the end of. it. That's where the problem is. And yet. it's like, "Oh, let's focus in on Donald. Trump." But in fact, the people who are. the least motivated to vote are the. folks who are the most likely within the.
Republican Party to disapprove of Donald. Trump. So, no, it is not in fact the. hardcore Republican base that needs that. motivation. It is other folks at this. convention simply put won't be reaching. because they'll probably be watching. football like most Americans. >> And not for nothing, but shouldn't. marketing genius Donald J. Trump. understand that scheduling a convention. on the same day as opening day of the. NFL is probably not going to help. attendance or viewership numbers. You. know what the number one most viewed. broadcast was last year? Football. You.
know what the second most viewed was? Football. Third? Football. Fourth? Football. Fifth? Football. Starting to. notice a pattern? A trend? So, I get. that Trump thinks the sun and earth. revolve around him, but I can assure you. Americans are not bailing on the NFL to. watch Donald Trump fellate himself on. stage for the umpteenth time. And that really is the whole thing here. All this is going to be is a Trump. worship fest, as I explained here. >> Look, this is going to be a Trump.
worship fest, which would be one thing. if he was actually popular, but he's. contending with a mid-30s approval. rating and he has very little to show. for his presidency, if anything. I mean, this guy came into office promising to. lower costs, to avoid foreign wars, and. to release the Epstein files. We have. higher costs, a foreign war in Iran, and. the Epstein files are being suppressed. by this very government. And so, the. last thing these candidates want to do. is tie themselves to the very person who. is pushing all of these voters away. But. because Trump needs to be front and.
center, because he needs to be the. center of attention, and this thing. needs to revolve around him, like the. the planets revolve around the sun in. our solar system, he's going to he's. going to force these other Republican. candidates to to appear on stage with. him, and then that's baggage they have. to carry in their own districts. >> been pretty effective as a messenger. over the years. One of the greatest. political communicators of our time. The. other conventions he's done, I mean, he's won the presidency twice. >> Sure, but we're in a position now where. he has full control of government, House, Senate, White House. He's not. delivering on any of his promises. Even.
his own voters can recognize that. They're pushing back against him. You've. got Republicans in special elections and. mid and and uh off-year elections losing. across the country. You've got Latino. voters flipping 40, 50 points to the. left. And so, that's all a direct. result. It is a referendum of Trump. >> And so, look, anybody in Trump's. position with half a brain would say, "I'm going to be a political liability. Let me just stay away from these. candidates and let them do their thing. so that we can win the upcoming. election." But of course, Trump won't do.
that because Trump doesn't care about. his party, he cares about Trump. So, because he wants worship, he gets. worship. Doesn't matter if it pulls his. party's candidates off the campaign. trail, doesn't matter if it costs them. tens of thousands of dollars that they. don't have to spare to attend, doesn't. matter if it saddles them with unpopular. imagery as voters are heading to the. polls expressly to rebuke Donald Trump. He wants it and he demands it and the. underlings deliver. Is there a world. where this hurts Republican candidates? Absolutely. But in fact, Trump doesn't.
even view that as a bad thing, as I. explain here. >> Knowing that his approval rating is in. the toilet, he has to hold a midterm. convention anyway. Knowing that his. approval rating is in the toilet, all of. the ads are apparently going to feature. Donald Trump and just be about his. accomplishments. >> Yeah. >> The guy's sitting on what, $400 million. in his super PAC. He's not going to. spend a penny because that money doesn't. really benefit him. I think like Trump. just doesn't care about the Republican. party, doesn't care about elections, he. cares about, I guess, like, you know, interior design.
>> Yeah, but apparently stone, stonework. >> Stone, yes. >> I mean, no, there there there is some. legitimacy to that very idea. I think I. actually think if and when Republicans. have a a bad midterm showing, it's going. to be. um it's going to give him the ability to. point to that and say, "Look, you you. need me. This is what happens when I'm. not on the ballot. Like I'm the one. everybody likes. And in fact, when you. all lose, it's going to be because. you're not me. Like I'm the only one who. can continue to win. And so I think in a. way, he's looking forward to other. people losing because it's going to just.
underscore the fact that when he wins, he's better than all of these people. >> he had everything is about him. Heads I. win, tails you lose. Um he will be an anchor around their. necks and then he will blame these. Republicans when they don't win their. election. >> So look, the truth is yes, this will be. a Trump worship fest. Yes, this will. hurt Republican candidates. Yes, it will. cost them in time and in money. And yes, it will saddle them with Donald Trump's. baggage at the most inopportune moment. But remember, they asked for this. At.
any point over the last decade, they. could have exercised their own autonomy. They are a coequal branch of government. They could have stood up to him, but. they never did and never do. They grovel. at Trump's feet always and forever, even. as he launched a trade war that sent. costs surging. Even as he ignited a war. overseas that he swore he'd avoid. He's. even as he hid the Epstein files he. swore he'd release. These people do not. serve you, they serve Trump. And today's. convention is just more proof of exactly. that. And if you still don't believe me,
I'll leave you with the unsettling words. OF TIM SCOTT. >> STANDING. WITH OUR PRESIDENT DONALD J. TRUMP. STAND FOR THE PRESIDENT DONALD J. TRUMP. THIS IS A BATTLE. FOR THE HEART OF OUR NATION. I SAID THE. HEART OF OUR NATION. THE DEMOCRATS, EXTREME CANDIDATES, WILL RIP THAT HEART. OUT OF OUR CHEST. THEY HATE OUR CULTURE. THEY HATE WHAT IT. MEANS TO BE AMERICAN.
HEAR ME, DALLAS. NOT ON [screaming] OUR. WATCH. WE WILL NOT BACK DOWN. WE WILL NOT GROW WEARY. ARE YOU WITH ME? I SAID, ARE YOU WITH ME? WE WILL KEEP THE MAJORITY. BUT HEY,
DON'T CALL IT a cult. >> [music]. >> Before you go, one quick request. It's. become clear to me that this White House. is dead set on preventing me from. reaching any audience. Trump's decision. to put me as the first name on his. enemies list is a testament to that. But. it didn't quiet down then, and I won't. do it now.
