over the last few years, you know that I. have been as outspoken as possible about. fighting the GOP in a symmetric manner. We as a party have sat idly by as. Republicans have refused to seat Merrick. Garland on the Supreme Court, but seated. Amy Coney Barrett. We've sat idly by and. watched as Republicans have railed. against a non-existent weaponized. government only to turn around and use. the entire government apparatus as a. cudgel against anyone on the left. We've. sat idly by and watched as the right. class clutches its pearls about. corruption while saying nothing as Trump.

and his family and his pals loot the. treasury on the daily basis. I am tired. of strongly worded letters. I'm tired of. the deference being paid to institutions. and norms and the filibuster and the. parliamentarian. As I write in this. book, our elected officials are in. office to serve the people, not the. institutions and processes of. government. The institutions are not an. end, they're a means to an end, which is. to say, these people are not in office. to protect the filibuster, they're there. to deliver for their constituents. And. if the filibuster or some other archaic.

procedural tool is in their way, they. shouldn't protect it, they should plow. through it. The day after is a blueprint. for what happens next with a Democratic. Party that is actually willing to fight. and meet this moment with the urgency it. deserves. Because frankly, we're lucky. to still have our democracy. We are. right now contending with a Republican. Party that is using every tool at its. disposal to turn this country into an. autocratic white nationalist theocracy. And they're not even being shy about it. The White House has gone after the. media, after comedians, after political.

opponents, after judges, after lawyers, after colleges, influencers, the list. goes on and on and on. Mark my words, we. will not win and this democracy will not. survive with politics as usual. We need. to stop pretending that everything will. be fine. Our democracy is not a given. It happens when we fight for it and only. when we fight for it. Right now, one. side is fighting a hell of a lot harder. But it doesn't have to be this way. And. frankly, it shouldn't be this way. I lay. out an entire playbook for what. forward-looking governance looks like,

for what accountability looks like, and. for what shoring up democracy looks like. so this never happens again. I take on. the Supreme Court, health care, climate. change, the economy, the pardon power. and so much more. And finally, one last note. I'm very lucky to be able to do what I. do. Um I don't take that for granted at. all. I know that I'm not entitled to a. single view, much less the purchase of. an entire book or a tour ticket.
