BREAKING: New McConnell health update raises NEW QUESTIONS

We've got a brand new health update for. Mitch McConnell or I should say a. statement attributed to Mitch McConnell. that raises more questions than it. actually answers. So, the statement. says, quote, "I'm still working hard to. get back to my full schedule of work in. the Senate and in Kentucky keeping up. with intense physical therapy per my. doctor's orders. Unfortunately, that. means I won't be able to make it to. Fancy Farm Kentucky this Saturday. There's no place I'd rather be in the. first Saturday of August than with the. good people of Western Kentucky feasting. on pork and mutton. When I first. attended 42 years ago, Fancy Farm was a.

pretty lonely place to be a Republican, but my how times have changed. Today, Western Kentucky is a conservative. Republican sea of red. So, I hate that. I'll miss the fun this year, but I'm. sending my best wishes to the Saint. Jerome community for a successful. picnic. As always, I appreciate all of. your continued well wishes and I'm. looking forward to getting back to the. Senate and to Kentucky soon." The. statement continues with a word from the. office of the attending physician, "Senator McConnell continues his. recovery from a fall at home in June. OAP physicians visit with the Senator. every day discussing all aspects of his.

rehabilitation care. Since his discharge. from hospital care, he has maintained a. strenuous course of physical therapy and. rehabilitation including multiple. sessions a day designed to rebuild. strength and reduce the risk of future. falls. His bout with childhood polio. continues to be a significant factor in. his immobility. He is not yet medically. cleared to leave with the rehab facility. and return to the office. And of course, what would be a Mitch McConnell. statement these days without the. requisite proof of life photo? Because. we definitely totally don't have a. gerontocracy problem when our US.

senators have to hold up newspapers to. prove that they are indeed not yet dead. Now, my job here is to have both a. healthy dose of skepticism while also. being responsible and accurate. Do I. think it is weird, to say the least, that we have not heard a single word. from Mitch McConnell other than these. written statements? That all we get are. occasional gauzy proof of life photos? And importantly, do I think that the. Republicans would be saying the same. thing if the roles were reversed? Do I.

think that if a Democratic senator was. in the hospital for nearly two months as. questions swirled about their continued. survival, that they would be demanding. proof of life at a minimum, but calling. for special elections and committee. hearings on a daily basis? Hell, I. wouldn't be surprised if Fox News. started running in memoriam segments. But when it's a Republican, suddenly. it's crickets from the GOP. Crickets. from the same party that for years stood. themselves up as these defenders of. cognitive function in government. Every.

day it was Joe Biden's cognitive health, but when Mitch McConnell is literally. offering up bi-weekly vague photos to. try and prove that he is alive and. nothing else, suddenly that's enough for. these champions of mental competency in. the US Senate. But all of this raises. the question, why does this matter? Why. would the GOP or Mitch McConnell's. office be hiding this if he really. wasn't okay? And the answer is that. there is a deadline fast approaching, and that deadline is August 3rd. So. under Kentucky law, this is a new law. and I'll get to that in a moment, if.

Mitch McConnell's seat becomes vacant. before August 3rd, the state is required. to hold a special election to fill it. After August 3rd, the seat just sits. vacant until whoever wins the already. scheduled November election gets sworn. in come January. And this is a law, as I. mentioned, that Kentucky Republicans. rammed through back in 2024 specifically. written because they saw that their. aging, ailing Senate leader was not. doing well and said, "We can't risk. letting our Democratic governor have any. say in who replaces him." So they wrote.

this law stripping Governor Andy Beshear. of the appointment power entirely and. mandated a special election instead. All. while Mitch McConnell was 82 years old. and very obviously not at peak health. But if Mitch McConnell's seat goes. vacant before August 3rd, then Kentucky. has to run a real special election. One. that Democrats could theoretically. compete in. Or at a bare minimum, where. Thomas Massie could run in, or somebody. else that could put up a real fight and. cost Republicans a lot of money to. defend. Money that can't go to any. offensive opportunities across the.

country. But, if McConnell's office can just keep. issuing vague little, he's recovering. nicely statements, and run out the clock. past August 3rd without an official. vacancy, then that seat simply sits. empty until January, when the stakes are. much lower, and national attention. doesn't consolidate onto one special. election. You won't be surprised to learn that. that is the exact scenario Republicans. are looking to avoid, which means that. there is, right now, a very real, very. cynical incentive for McConnell's team. to say as little as possible, for as.

long as possible, and just get him, or. at least the legal fiction of his still. occupied seat, across the August 3rd. finish line. Whether or not that's. what's actually happening, I can't tell. you. Nobody can, because that's exactly. the point. The opacity itself is the. issue here. And in fact, Republicans are. outright admitting that this plan to. keep the status quo in place until after. August 3rd is exactly what they're. seeking to do. >> Then there was this, Kentucky Governor.

Andy Beshear, Democrat, don't forget, he's calling for proof of life. He wants. a video from ailing Senator Mitch. McConnell. He says the photo just isn't. enough, and the question is, is Mitch. Mitch McConnell still fit enough to. carry out his duties? Beshear believes. Kentuckians deserve greater. transparency. He's calling on McConnell. to appear in a video to reassure. constituents that he still can perform. his job. Beshear sent a letter on July. 8th to McConnell's office, and still has. not received a response. Beshear stated,

quoting here, "As Governor, I request. that you fully update Kentuckians. regarding the current status of your. health." End quote. He added that. the elections that elect their officials. have a responsibility to openly. communicate about their ability to. serve. Now, here's the issue. None of us. like McConnell. No one like No one's in. a rush to get Mitch McConnell back. But, if he is incapacitated, this is going to. sound cold, but let's play hardball the. way the left would, right? Let's do. Let's Let's play by the same rules that. Democrats and the progressive Let's play.

the rules that the Democrats socialists. would play and will play now that. they're being elected around the. country. Mitch, if he's on life support, if they got that heart beating in for. staff, wife, Elaine Chao, whatever you got to. do, keep the plug in until August 4th. Sorry to say it. Keep it in because if. it's pulled before August 4th and they. declare Mitch brain dead and gone, Beshear gets to put someone in that. seat. Beshear will put someone in that a. Democrat, hardcore Democrat until they.

get to the election. After August 4th, it becomes an election, goes to August. 11th. Now, if some if Beshear puts. someone in the seat on August 3rd, he. stays in the seat until the end of the. term. If it's August 4th or later, there's a special election on August. 11th. I'm so Yeah, August 11th. Yeah, this is. what we really, really, really need to. do. We want to keep Mitch. no friend of Trump, no friend of MAGA, no friend of conservatives, but keep. that guy at least pumping until. 12:00 even with 1 second into August.

4th. >> And look, this isn't just me beating up. on a guy who may or may not be alive. There are actual implications of. McConnell's absence. The US government. still has to function. Senate business. still goes forward. Senate math is. determined by whether or not he's there. Laws are being blocked or passed. depending on which senators are actually. present. I of course have sympathy for. anybody undergoing health challenges. I. get it. But the work of the country. should not stop because somebody who is. too old or too sick to effectively do. their job is in a position that they.

refuse to give up. But there's one more part to all of this. and I've said this before, but I think. it bears repeating. It should not be lost on us how even. now, even from a hospital bed or. wherever he is, even 7 weeks removed. from the Senate floor, Mitch McConnell's. presence, or the ambiguity of his. presence, is still being used to. manipulate the system for maximum. partisan advantage. Mitch McConnell is a. guy whose entire legacy is built on. bending institutional rules to squeeze.

out just one more procedural win. Blocking Merrick Garland from getting. his spot on the court, ramming through. Amy Coney Barrett, rewriting Senate. norms whenever it serves the. Republicans, and now, even as his own. health, his own survival hangs in the. balance, the mechanics of his own. party's law are potentially being used, deadline and all, to make sure that. Kentucky's Senate seat stays firmly in. Republicans' hands, no matter what. happens to him personally. Like, you could not write a more fitting final. chapter for Mitch McConnell if you. tried. A guy whose defining trait was.

always outmaneuvering the system for. partisan gain, quite possibly doing it. one last time, not through some clever. floor maneuver, committee trick, but. simply by the silence around his own. body being useful enough to run out the. clock.
