I am very excited to be able to make an. announcement today about something that. I've been working on for the better part. of the last year. So, you know that. since I started doing political media, I. have spoken about how Democrats need to. fight. If there is one constant in my. work, one recurring theme, it's that. And that theme came into much clearer. view in the aftermath of the 2024. election, where having a sense of fight. isn't just a matter of preference, it is. existential. We are going up against the. Republican Party that has broadcast it. will stop at nothing to gain power and. keep power. I spend every day of my life. talking about what they're doing in the.

courts, in executive orders, in. Congress, at the state level, you name. it. So, with that in mind, I'm really. proud to announce that I've written a. book on that very subject. It's called. The Day After: How to wield power in a. post-Trump world. In the book, I discuss. how Republicans have abused their power, how Democrats have refused to. effectively wield their power, and most. importantly, how Democrats should wield. power if we are lucky enough to be in. the majority again. The reality is that. this project didn't start with Trump. Donald Trump is the symptom of a much. larger sickness that has taken over the.

GOP, but the virus goes back decades. As. I write in the book, if you're shocked. by the speed of descent of our. democracy, you've probably seen the easy. explanation of why Trump 2.0 is so much. worse than Trump 1.0. The pundits say. that Trump learned from his last time. around, he now knows how to wield power, punish enemies, and purge the. establishment that slowed him down, all. of which is true, but it's only part of. the story, a story that stretches back. several decades because the broader. right-wing movement also learned its. lessons and saw its greatest opportunity. in the second coming of Donald Trump.

The project didn't start in 2025. It. took a half century of plotting and. scheming, but it finally came to pass on. the fourth attempt. You see, Donald J. Trump is just the endpoint of a very, very long conservative campaign to wield. power for the profit of the few. What. started with the imperial presidency of. Richard Nixon found its popular. expression in Ronald Reagan, its. military force in George W. Bush, and. its brazen lawlessness in reality TV. star. Autocracy is just the cost of. doing business, and it's one the. oligarchy is more than ready to pay. But besides how we got here, this book.

is also a blueprint for how to move. forward. And importantly, I don't mean. move forward so that we can just go back. to normal, go back to the status quo. We. tried that. That was the entire basis of. the Biden presidency, but it buys you no. goodwill against the Republican Party. that at its core does not believe in. democracy. For my entire life, I have. watched as Republicans have conferred. goodwill to the right in hopes that. it'll be reciprocated, a constant. erosion of values in deference to the. bad faith Republicans who will abuse. that goodwill every single time. As I.

write, one of the great fallacies of the. Biden, Obama, and Clinton years is the. notion that if only Democrats would. compromise with their Republican. counterparts, their goodwill would be. duly reciprocated. If only they. capitulate to the GOP this time, this. time, the right will lay down its arms. and a golden era of bipartisanship would. emerge. "I'll hold the ball, Lucy,". explains to Charlie Brown, "and you come. running up and kick it." We need to. disabuse ourselves of this notion that. we will win over Republicans with. goodwill and compromise, and instead, we. need to wield power aggressively as if. democracy depends on it, because it.

does. That means structural reforms to. the Supreme Court, to the Department of. Justice, to the presidency and the. pardon power, and against those people. who have undermined our free and fair. elections from within and without the. government. And just as importantly, it. means taking an aggressive stance to. accomplish what needs to be accomplished. to usher in healthcare for all. Americans, to combat climate change once. and for all, to pass voting rights. legislation, and to create an economy. that works for all Americans. Trump has. shown us that our institutions are not. unbreakable. He's done quite an.

effective job at breaking them. Our job. is to rebuild them better than they were. before, more fairly and equitably than. they were before, and so that they. actually work for all of us, not just. the wealthy elites who have access to. the levers of power. We may have one. shot left at this. So, my contention. here is that we better do it fast, we. better do it with an intent to actually. change things, and we better do it. right, because if we've learned. anything, it's that our democracy is not. a given. As Benjamin Franklin famously. said, "A republic, if you can keep it.".
